->"A quick, simple hairstyle that keeps Shionne's hair behind her head so that it doesn't distract her while she's moving around and fighting."
-->-- Description of the Ponytail, VideoGame/TalesOfArise

Basically using a ponytail to visually distinguish women and girls who are Tomboys, Ladettes, or otherwise don't act in a "proper" feminine manner.

This is TruthInTelevision for many tomboys in RealLife, due to being an easy-to-do style that gets your hair out of the way. In fiction, odds are that if a girl is wearing a ponytail (save for one paired with an elegant hairstyle), she's not going to act demure or feminine, at least not all the time. Bonus points if she wears overalls or a Tomboy, or is a RebelliousPrincess.

Back when girls just didn't have boy hair, no matter what, ponytails were a way for tomboys to rebel against the curls their mothers wished they'd worn. This was especially the case in '60s-'80s girl empowerment fiction.

Keep in mind that since not all tomboys wear ponytails, and not all "feminine" girls avoid ponytails, there isn't much point in listing aversions to this.

Compare SlipknotPonytail, GirlishPigtails, BraidsOfAction, BoyishShortHair, SailorsPonytail, SamuraiPonytail, GlassesAndPonytailCoverup, BaldHeadOfToughness.

Contrast RegalRinglets, OjouRinglets, LongHairIsFeminine, PrimAndProperBun, MotherlySidePlait.

No pun related to AllGirlsLikePonies, though a female character can have both.

* Advertising/TheBurgerKingKidsClubGangs Boomer is a sporty girl who wears her hair in a ponytail.

* In Manga/AsteroidInLove, Ao invokes this during the SchoolFestival of her second year, owing to her crossdressing as a male waiter. She's been seen wearing ponytails in other situations, but they're closer to the MotherlySidePlait than this.
* Manga/BlackLagoon: Revy is a agressive gun-wielding Ladette and accomplished ActionGirl. She keeps her hair in a low ponytail.
* Manga/Bleach: ActionGirl Yoruichi. She used to have short hair, but a hundred years spent mostly as a cat allowed her hair to grow out. Now she spends most of the time with it tied back in a ponytail while she kicks butt with the best of the men. Since her extremely high aristocratic rank wasn't quite high enough to be a RebelliousPrincess, she also doubles as a SpiritedYoungLady, too.
%%* Asaka (AKA Neuroloid Girl) in Literature/Dokkoida
%%* Misaki of Manga/ExcelSaga.
%%* Vietnam of Webcomic/HetaliaAxisPowers.
* Manga/HikariNoDensetsu: Hikari is a PassionateSportsGirl who's aim is to compete in the Olympics (no, seriously). She has ginger red hair that she ties into a short ponytail.
* Manga/FullmetalAlchemist has Paninya, a former pickpocket turned odd job worker with a supremely short cropped ponytail.
* Downplayed with Sango in Manga/InuYasha; she wears her long hair bound in a ponytail when she's in her battle-garb, but otherwise she wears it mostly loose with a ribbon tied at the end. Personality-wise, she's more of a YamatoNadeshiko and LadyOfWar than a tomboy and only wears a ponytail out of necessity when fighting.
* Jo has this hairstyle in the 1987 anime adaptation of Literature/LittleWomen before her ImportantHaircut, though given the setting, this may or may not be historically inaccurate.
* Signum of Franchise/LyricalNanoha, a stoic MagicKnight and generally one of the least feminine women on the show.
* Presea from Manga/MagicKnightRayearth. Also, tomboys Tarta and Hikaru have their hair in a braid. Contrast to the girlier girls Emeraude, Alcyone, Tatra, and Umi, who wear their hair down. Caldina, Fuu, and Aska are harder to classify since they have both tomboy and girly girl traits, but all wear different hairstyles.
* Anime/MischievousTwinsTheTalesOfStClares:
** Between the O'Sullivan twins, Isabel is the girly girl and has long, straightened hair, while Patricia has unkempt, scruffy hair that she often ties in a ponytail.
** Belinda is a tomboy and the Captain of the Lacross team. She ties her hair into a ponytail when she's on the field.
* Kobayashi from Manga/MissKobayashisDragonMaid always has her hair tied up in a ponytail unless she's sleeping or bathing, befitting her no-nonsense sober personality.
* Anime/PokemonTheSeries: Misty's hair is a sort of hybrid of this and GirlishPigtails since she wears her hair pulled up in a single side pigtail.
* Kyouko Sakura from Anime/PuellaMagiMadokaMagica wears her hair in an unkempt high ponytail. Not only she's a rough ActionGirl and TheLadette, but also her civilian garb is a green hoodie and short shorts instead of a school uniform.
* Ukyou from Manga/RanmaOneHalf wears her waist-length hair in a ponytail and still comes off as Bifauxnen. Ranma wore "her" long hair this way while training in China.
* Makoto/Sailor Jupiter of Anime/SailorMoon has a long ponytail, and despite having a girlier side she's the physically strongest of the group and the designated brawler. She also sometimes sports a TomboyishBaseballCap to match, particularly in her earlier appearances.
* Yui Goidou of Manga/TheWorldGodOnlyKnows after she goes Bifauxnen.
* Anime/VoltesV: PlayedWith in regards to Megumi. She's an ActionGirl that ties her hair in a ponytail, but she's also a bonafide YamatoNadeshiko... but insinuating that she should do some ridiculously girly stuffs like 'playing with dolls' pisses her off.

* Betty Cooper from ComicBook/ArchieComics, as the Tomboy to Veronica's Girly Girl. Originally she wore her hair down but when she became more tomboyish she switched to a ponytail. She's quite handy with mechanics, made most obvious in ComicBook/ArchieComics2015.
* Played with by Eva Kant from ComicBook/Diabolik in her youth: she wore her hair this way and was a tomboy as a teen, but kept the style when she became a very feminine young woman (while also being a DarkActionGirl), only ditching it for a PrimAndProperBun on her wedding night (first to screw with her husband's mind, and then because it reminded her of her victory over the man who had ruined her life).
* April Patterson from ComicStrip/ForBetterOrForWorse wore one in her teenage years.
* Franchise/SonicTheHedgehog:
** Bunnie Rabbot/D'Coolette in ComicBook/SonicTheHedgehogArchieComics started out with this hairstyle like in the cartoon before switching to braided pigtails later, although she went back to wearing her hair in a ponytail after the comic's SoftReboot. Sally Acorn also wore her hair this way in her childhood, as opposed to her (usually) BoyishShortHair as an adult.
** Whisper the Wolf and Surge the Tenrec in ComicBook/SonicTheHedgehogIDW both wear their hair (or quills, in Surge's case) like this. Whisper's is a topknot type, while Surge's is styled somewhat like a mohawk in line with her punkish nature.

* Fanfic/BaitAndSwitchSTO: Captain Kanril Eleya wears her hair in a slightly messy ponytail, and notes in her narration that she could have never gotten away with wearing her hair that long when she was an enlisted woman. The ponytail keeps the hair out of her face, but it's not like there's much she can get it caught in on a starship's bridge.
* Fanfic/DoingItRightThisTime: Asuka starts wearing a ponytail when she decides to ditch her hairclips and try a new hairstyle. She's also masculine, brash, and she prefers fighting over stereotypically girlish hobbies. It made her look more masculine and more aggressive.
* Fanfic/EverydayCrazinessInPontypandy: Gabby, a snarky college student who's good with mechanics and history, wears her hair in a ponytail. By contrast, her SpoiledSweet girlfriend Svetlana wears RegalRinglets.
* As shown in her college flashbacks, Ragyo in Webcomic/KillLaKillAU donned one of these, even when she was dressed in an evening gown, and, in said college days (besides being a HardDrinkingPartyGirl), she liked to get into fights. Her post-college flashbacks have her donning a PrimAndProperBun, apparently, signalling her transition into maturity.
* Fanfic/TheNightUnfurls: As Lily begins her training as an apprentice hunter, her red hair is tied into a ponytail. Subverted as she develops into a CombatMedic GirlyBruiser, neither Tomboy nor TheLadette.
* Fanfic/OnceMoreWithFeeling: Asuka wears a ponytail -from episode 11 onward-. She's loud, brash, hot-blooded, aggressive, loves fighting and isn't at all feminine.
* Tomboyish ActionGirl Pikachu in Webcomic/RocketMember keeps her hair in a ponytail.
* Fanfic/VowOfNudity: Haara has one, befitting a wilderness monk who spends her time liberating slaves. One story reveals that it doesn't use a hair tie, she loops it around itself to create the ponytail.

* Belle from WesternAnimation/BeautyAndTheBeast, while not quite a tomboy, is one of the most strong-willed and intellectual of the Disney Princesses, and she's also one of only two (the other being RebelliousPrincess Jasmine from WesternAnimation/Aladdin) to wear her hair in a ponytail on a regular basis; even when SheCleansUpNicely, the ponytail does likewise.
* In WesternAnimation/TheBookOfLife, Maria is the only female character in the Land Of The Living to wear her hair this way, and she doesn't seem to be as ladylike as the other girls in town. In The Land Of The Remembered, Manolo's cousins Adelita and Scardelita also wear their hair in long, messy ponytails, and are fierce Soldaderas.
* In a deviation from the comics, the version of Wonder Woman in the WesternAnimation/DCAnimatedMovieUniverse has her hair in a ponytail, along with sidetails, though she does lose them for most of the later films. Intrepid reporter, Lois Lane, regularly sports one as well.
* Fiona in WesternAnimation/Shrek1 keeps her hair in a braided ponytail. While she tries to (initially) be girly, her tomboyish personality is ultimately what causes Shrek to bond and fall in love with her.
* Franchise/ToyStory: Jessie the Cowgirl doll wears a braided ponytail, complete with a yellow ribbon. So does Mrs. Jennifer Davis, Andy's mom, from WesternAnimation/ToyStory1.
* Vanellope von Schweetz from WesternAnimation/WreckItRalph has one, tied up with a piece of licorice, which shows her rough n' tumble attitude, despite the saccharine world she lives in.
* Wyldstyle from WesternAnimation/TheLEGOMovie has a small one on the top of her head.

* Belle in Film/BeautyAndTheBeast2017 starts out with a ponytail just like her animated counterpart (though later in the film, she tends to wear her hair either down or in a bun instead), and is even more tomboyish than the animated version, being an inventor as well as a bookworm, wearing a scrappier, more action-oriented outfit at the beginning, and favoring simpler, less fancy clothes even at the Beast's castle.
* The titular character of Film/CalamityJane sports a Tomboyish Ponytail throughout the entire movie.
* In Film/MeanGirls, ponytails are usually used to signify that a character is less concerned with her appearance. Cady wore her hair like this before she joined the Plastics, started wearing her hair down as she fell in with them, and went back to the occasional ponytail after her HeelRealization. The Plastics actually tell her that they have a rule about only wearing hair in a ponytail once a week. Janis, the goth/alternative outcast, always wears her hair back. All the Plastics wear their hair down throughout the film, but Regina starts sporting a ponytail as she gains weight and is forced to wear less glamorous clothing. She is also wearing a ponytail at the end of the film, where she is a lacrosse athlete and has a more down-to-earth wardrobe.
* Laney of Film/ShesAllThat, to show how she's too weird to be pretty. Which got mercilessly mocked in Film/NotAnotherTeenMovie.
* : Sif, a talented woman warrior, wears one whenever she's seen going into battle.
* Sarah Connor wears one for the vast majority of Film/Terminator2JudgmentDay and is a resilient, brave ActionGirl.

%% * Jenit Sulla in Literature/CiaphasCain, a LeeroyJenkins female officer in the Imperial Guard.
%% * Literature/ThursdayNext.
%% ** Also her EvilTwin Literature/ThursdayNext-1, a DarkActionGirl who has a much more severe ponytail, held in place by a leather strap rather than a scrunchie. (Literature/ThursdayNext-2 is a subversion, at least to start with; she's an ActualPacifist GranolaGirl whose scrunchie is made of hemp.)
%% * Sasha Hunter of Literature/GreekNinja.
* In Garth Williams' classic illustrations for Literature/CharlottesWeb, pig-loving farm girl Fern wears her hair in various ways from scene to scene, but her most common hairstyle (and allegedly E.B. White's favorite for her) is a ponytail. When she starts to "grow up" and care more about Henry Fussy than farm animals, she switches to braided GirlishPigtails.
* The spunky ActionGirl Kate from Literature/TheMysteriousBenedictSociety has her blonde hair constantly tied in a ponytail. She is a very agile and energetic CircusBrat so the ponytail is likely for convenience. Also Jillson, a completely unfeminine adult, who ties her ponytail with wire.
* Annabeth Chase from Literature/PercyJacksonAndTheOlympians regularly wears her hair in a ponytail to show she's an Girl Smart Girl.

%%
%% * Jo from Series/TheFactsOfLife.
%% * Kara Thrace from Series/2003, when her hair is long enough to be tied back.
%% * ComicBook/LoisLane often sported a Tomboyish Ponytail on Series/Smallville.
%% * Phoebe and Monica from Series/Friends, sometimes.
%% * When going into dangerous situations, Detective Jane Rizzoli puts her hair up into the Ponytail of Righteous Justice.
%%

* Music/MelanieC often had one in the early years of the Music/SpiceGirls as Sporty Spice.

* Jemimah from Roleplay/DawnOfANewAgeOldportBlues is a sporty, rough-and-tumble judoka with little concern for her personal appearance. To that end, she usually keeps her long hair tied up in a rough ponytail so it doesn't get in her way.

* VideoGame/ANNOMutationem: Ann is an ActionGirl who takes on a variety of enemies and supernatural creatures while primarily wearing her hairstyle in a ponytail.
* Becca from VideoGame/BioLabWars has her hair in a ponytail, and is one of the three mercenaries you can play.
* VideoGame/TheCaligulaEffect2: The female protagonist wears her hair up in a high ponytail.
%%* Marle of VideoGame/ChronoTrigger.
* Coco Bandicoot from VideoGame/CrashBandicoot keeps her hair in a ponytail in every game except VideoGame/CrashOfTheTitans.
* Yurie from VideoGame/CthulhuMythosTheSleepingGirlOfTheMiasmaSea sports a ponytail as part of her tomboy persona, and fittingly being the ActionGirl in the game.
* VideoGame/DonkeyKongCountry: Dixie Kong. Like Shantae, the ponytail is used as a weapon. It is also HelicopterHair.
* Princess "Eva" Evangeline of the Kingdom of the Northern Reaches, poster girl for VideoGame/DungeonSiegeII, sports this look, as did her predecessor from the first game, officially known as Farm Girl.
%%* Alexandra Roivas of VideoGame/EternalDarkness.
* VideoGame/Haven2020: Yu, a boyish WrenchWench, sports a ponytail as part of her "Streetwear" outfit and can also be seen with one in a few supplementary artworks.
* An unusual example from VideoGame/HollowKnight with Iselda. Being a mosquito she doesn't actually have any hair, but she's bound her antennae together up on top of her head to resemble this hairstyle. While she doesn't actually seem very tomboyish normally, spending most of the game sighing over her absent husband Cornifer, her Dream Nail dialogue reveals that she's actually a Badass ActionGirl who was once a soldier or adventurer before she settled down to marry.
* VideoGame/IntrepidIzzy: Izzy has her hair done in a ponytail.
* Zoey from VideoGame/Left4Dead, which also has the advantage of being easy to convincingly animate.
%% * Rin from VisualNovel/LittleBusters, though the bell in her hair hints at the sweeter, cuter side by way of her cat theme.
* Sara Ryder, VideoGame/MassEffectAndromedas female lead, is very tomboyish and wears a brunette ponytail as her default hairstyle.
* Samus Aran of Franchise/Metroid, the galaxy's greatest bounty hunter, often sports a long ponytail and has been mistaken for a man when in her PoweredArmor. Of course, as to HOW she fits a tall ponytail in a big metal helmet... that's anyone's guess.
* Lip of VideoGame/PanelDePon, also a TomboyPrincess, has a very large and thick ponytail tied back with a big pink ribbon. Her AttractMode bio even describes her as being "a bit of a tomboy".
* In VideoGame/Persona3 Portable, the female protagonist's Chariot Social Link, Rio Iwasaki, is a dedicated athlete who sports a sensible ponytail.
* Franchise/Pokemon:
** Earlier generations had Misty (Kasumi in the Japanese version), referred to as "the tomboyish mermaid" on her Gym's signpost (and perhaps the most physically brutal in combat out of Kanto's female Gym Leaders), whose trademark hairstyle, as seen in Gens I and III and every adaptation in which she's appeared, is a short ponytail tied to the side.
** Flannery from VideoGame/PokemonRubyAndSapphire is an enthusiastic and boyish fire Gym leader who sports a messy red ponytail.
** Hilda (Touko in the Japanese version), the female player character in VideoGame/PokemonBlackAndWhite, has a huge, voluminous ponytail, complete with HairAntennae. Her look gives off a convincing Tomboyish feel, and fan interpretation commonly presents her as OneOfTheBoys/a Lad-ette.
** Nemona from VideoGame/PokemonScarletAndViolet wears her hair in a ponytail, and she's an outgoing, active girl who practically lives for Pokémon battles.
** One of the VideoGame/PokemonScarletAndViolet Paldea region's Elite Four and a slim, laidback tomboy, Rika's green hair is kept in a long low ponytail.
** The Gen IX Pokémon Tinkatuff is from an all-female evolution line and has a growth on her head that resembles a ponytail. She's also rather aggressive and combative by nature, being known to attack Pawniard and Bisharp for scrap metal, and she wields a brutish-looking hammer that she made herself.
* In VideoGame/PotionPermit, Runeheart, the passionate blacksmith and apprentice of her mother Opalheart, ties her hair in a ponytail.
* VideoGame/PuyoPuyo protagonist Arle Nadja, who outright hates the idea of acting ladylike as stated by her in VideoGame/PuyoPuyoTetris, has her hair tied up into a ponytail in the back.
* ActionGirl Claire Redfield of the Franchise/ResidentEvil series sports a ponytail and is even described as 'a bit of a tomboy' in the instruction manual for VideoGame/ResidentEvil2.
* Wumela from the VideoGame/Richman series has a ponytail, While she is not quite a tomboy, she's a pop idol who wants to expand her career as a actress and a director.
* In VideoGame/SaintsRowTheThird, Shaundi TookALevelInBadass from the previous game, and also traded her dreadlocks for a ponytail.
* VideoGame/Shantae keeps her hair like this, since swinging it like a whip is her main method of attack.
* VideoGame/SuperCloudbuilt: Demi has [[RuleOfThree [=THREE=]]] ponytails, and is an ActionGirl proficient in LeParkour.
* VideoGame/TargetAcquired2016: Yura is a police officer who has her hot pink hair in a ponytail.
* Lara Croft from Franchise/TombRaider may be the TropeCodifier for video games, especially 3D action/platformers. It's not only practical in-universe for the highly-physical nature of what she does in the games but flowing hair is still incredibly difficult to render in 3D, while a ponytail can be done with much simpler physics modeling.
* Undyne from VideoGame/Undertale wears her red hair like this and is the HotBlooded Captain of the Royal Guard.
* After Javi cuts her hair in Episode 5 of The Walking Dead: A New Frontier, Clementine wears her hair in a single side ponytail.
* Franchise/WhenTheyCry:
** Mion of VisualNovel/HigurashiWhenTheyCry wears her hair in a long ponytail. Mion is boisterous, perverted, and usually exhibits little in terms of femininity. She calls herself an "old man" regularly and in one arc Keiichi decides against giving her a doll (and instead gives it to their more feminine, mutual friend Rena) because he deems her too boyish for one. In contrast, her more girly identical twin sister Shion wears her hair loose. [[spoiler:Mion is actually a subversion. She's much more feminine than she pretends to be. Keiichi giving Rena the doll upset Mion so much she ended up sobbing to her sister, which unwittingly caused Shion to become a SerialKiller.]]
** Jessica from VisualNovel/UminekoWhenTheyCry has a short, wavy ponytail and is very tomboyish for the most part, especially with her masculine speech patterns. Like Mion, she also has a hidden feminine side, though it isn't as emphasized as much as with Mion.
%% * Kirara from VisualNovel/YuminaTheEthereal.

* Webcomic/Gloomverses Clermont, a spunky mechanic and labor activist with an enormous mane of hair pulled back into a ponytail.
* In the Candy timeline of Webcomic/HomestuckBeyondCanon, Jade Harley complements her rebel camouflage attire with a sensible pulled-back do.
* In Webcomic/Widdershins this is how Harry the freelance artifact-hunter and all-around people-helper wears her hair. When forced into a dress, complete with a lady-like hairstyle, she scowls until she can change.
%% * Rita from Webcomic/GiftsOfWanderingIce
%% * Zii of Webcomic/MenageA3.
%% * Kate of Webcomic/Rhapsodies (When she doesn't have it in a pencil studded bun.)
%% * Sam of Webcomic/TheWotch.
%% * Nanase of Webcomic/ElGoonishShive tends to wear her hair this way when it is the appropriate length for it.
%% * Yihwa Yeon from Webcomic/TowerOfGod, interestingly enough after her run-in with Viole, who had the same hair-do.
%% * From Webcomic/TheFarSideOfUtopia both Naomi and Mione wear their hair in ponytails and tend to have the behavior to match.

* Widget of the Literature/WhateleyUniverse, who is a tomboy and inventor who usually wears a ponytail pulled through a bicycle cap. And a Whateley labcoat. Despite that, she has a bad crush on Thunderbird and wishes Chaka hadn't snatched up Thunderbird when he was (apparently) available.
%% * Golgotha's early appearance in Franchise/Noob.

%%%
%%% Please put your choices in alphabetical order.
%%%
* WesternAnimation/Amphibia: Sasha is a GirlyGirlWithATomboyStreak and has proved to be quite feisty and combative with a ponytail holding a hidden dagger.
* WesternAnimation/AtomicBetty: The titular character is an ActionGirl interested in sports and science-fiction who wears her red hair in a ponytail.
* Karen from WesternAnimation/FrostyTheSnowman might be a cute girl but she can do tomboyish stuff such as speedskating.
* WesternAnimation/Futurama: Captain Leela is a no-nonsense gal who's by far the toughest member of the main cast, and has the ponytail to match.
* WesternAnimation/Grossology: Abby Archer is fearless enough to take on some of the most squeamish villainy imaginable and wears her hair in a ponytail.
* WesternAnimation/HaileysOnIt: Hailey Banks is quite the tomboy who wears a white t-shirt with red sleeves covered in overalls and has a long ponytail to boot.
%%* Julie from WesternAnimation/HiHiPuffyAmiYumi.
%%* Judy Jetson from WesternAnimation/TheJetsons.
* WesternAnimation/JimmyTwoShoes: Heloise may be a cute little girl with her hair tied up in a ponytail, but she's also a sadistic evil genius that even Satan Lucius Heinous VII is terrified of.
%%* Sissy Blakely from WesternAnimation/JohnnyTest.
* WesternAnimation/KaBlam: June is a snarky tomboy who wears baggy clothing, along with a ponytail to keep her blue hair out of her face.
* WesternAnimation/TheLegendOfKorra: The eponymous Avatar Korra combines the ponytail with sidetails to show she is a BoisterousBruiser ActionGirl.
* WesternAnimation/TheLooneyTunesShow: WesternAnimation/LolaBunny is an EarsAsHair example. Her long ears are tied down like a high ponytail in the show.
* WesternAnimation/TheLoudHouse: Lynn Loud Jr. has an absurdly messy and unkempt ponytail, and is the PassionateSportsGirl and roughhousing Ladette of the siblings. Ronnie Anne and Luan have these as well, though they are a lot neater and more well kept, while Ronnie Anne is plenty tomboyish, Luan is barely unfeminine enough to qualify as a tomboy.
* WesternAnimation/MyLittlePonyFriendshipIsMagic: Applejack is a rough and tumble farmgirl with a tomboyish streak a mile wide, to the point that she competes in events like racing and gate jumping, and gets dirty in her job all the time, has her mane Pun and tail tied up in ponytails.
%% ** Megan from the original Franchise/MyLittlePony series wore her hair like this.
* WesternAnimation/TheOwlHouse: After spending most of the show with BoyishShortHair, the end of season 2 has Luz put her hair up in a small ponytail to go with her CostumeEvolution.
