In the same vein as TheFilmOfTheBook, this is when a game is adapted into a series, usually an Anime. It's extremely common in the case of Visual Novels.

A SubTrope to AnimatedAdaptation; video games, by their very nature, are already animated (though cases that adapt them into live-action series also count as examples). [=RPGs=] in particular tend to have sprawling plotlines narrowed or cut entirely.

If you're looking for the reverse of this trope -- that is, the game derived from the anime -- see LicensedGame. For examples of games adapted to films, see VideoGameMovies.

* Anime/DotHackSign is an aversion. It's not an adaptation as much as a side story for the game, and a cross-promotional thing. However, others in the Franchise/DotHack franchise exist. [=.hack//G.U.=] Trilogy The Movie is a CGI AlternateUniverse of the G.U. games.
** SIGN acts more as a prequel but Anime/DotHackLiminality is a full blown side story.
* VisualNovel/ElevenEyes

* VideoGame/ChronoTrigger has a Nuumamonja OVA which focused on a Poyozo and a Nu who make up the band Nuumamonja at the Millennial Fair. None of the playable characters are in it except a few shots of the back of Crono and Lucca's heads, but it does include [=NPCs=] like Johnny and Gato and plenty of references to the game.

Dante is in his [=DMC1=] attire instead of his [=DMC3=] version. Interactions depicted in [=DMC4=] also show Lady and Trish talking to each other as acquaintances, and the fourth episode of the anime is centered around the two meeting for the first time
* VideoGame/DevilSurvivor2: The Animation
* VisualNovel/DiabolikLovers
* Anime/MakaiSenkiDisgaea, based on VideoGame/DisgaeaHourOfDarkness

* Anime/FZeroGPLegend, best known for strike:spawning ascending the FALCON PUNCH tic Mutation.
* VisualNovel/GakuenHeaven
* Anime/GalaxyAngel, which turned PragmaticAdaptation (the game was delayed but the anime wasn't) into an art form to create a downright hilarious GagSeries.
* VideoGame/GalaxyFrauleinYuna (Most non-Japanese fans probably don't even know the games exist. Granted, they're kinda old .. but they did come first.)
* VideoGame/Galerians: Rion, an OVA produced in 2002
* VideoGame/GanbareGoemon
** Ganbare Goemon: Jigen-jō no Akumu: An OVA which parodied other Creator/Konami games (namely Franchise/Castlevania, VideoGame/Gradius, and VideoGame/TwinBee).

* Anime/GodEater
* Anime/GranblueFantasy
* VisualNovel/GreenGreen
* VideoGame/Gungrave
* Anime/Hakuouki
* Anime/HaloLegends. Unique in that it is not an adaptation of any Franchise/Halo game, but rather an ExpandedUniverse anime anthology of a Western series, tailored exclusively for a Western audience.
* VideoGame/HammerinHarry has several online webisodes.
* VisualNovel/Happiness
* VideoGame/HeroBank
* VisualNovel/HiiroNoKakera

* Anime/HyperdimensionNeptuniaTheAnimation
* VideoGame/Idolish7

* Anime/KirbyRightBackAtYa is an adaptation of the Franchise/Kirby games. It's very unique because it's a standalone show set in an AlternateUniverse loosely inspired by the whole series, rather than being created to promote a particular game; Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land and VideoGame/KirbyAirRide were actually released to promote the anime, not the other way around. Most Kirby fans are also fans of the anime, in large part because the creator of the games, Creator/MasahiroSakurai, was heavily involved in its development.

** Anime/PersonaTrinitySoul is a loose (and officially non-canon) sequel to Persona 3.

* Shingetsutan Tsukihime
* VideoGame/Twinbee Paradise (OVA) is kind of a weird case, as it may have been based off of the Radio Dramas that were based on the video games.
* Anime/UtaNoPrincesama
* VideoGame/Utawarerumono
* Anime/ValkyriaChronicles
* Anime/VariableGeo a 3-part OVA by Creator/KSS that's loosely based on the Advanced V.G. fighting game series (which was a reboot of the original H-game continuity), so there's no hentai content.
** Variable Geo: Neo is unrelated to the first OVA, as it's based on one of the other games and is a hentai series.
* VideoGame/ViewtifulJoe
* Anime/VirtuaFighter
* VideoGame/VoltageFighterGowcaizer (three part OVA titled Gowcaizer: The Voltage Fighters)

** Anime/YokaiWatchJamYokaiAcademyYCloseEncountersOfTheNKind
** Anime/YokaiWatchShadowside
* Anime/YuGiOhCapsuleMonsters is based on the real-life Capsule Monsters card game, not the Capsule Monsters game from the manga.

* VisualNovel/Yumeria
* VideoGame/ZoneOfTheEnders: Dolores, i is not an adaptation, but a side-story that takes place both before and after the first game.
** Specifically, the Idolo OVA takes place before the first game, and the actual Dolores, i series takes place between the original and Second Runner.

* The popular WebAnimation/Arfenhouse Flash movies were loosely based on a series of freeware spoof RPGs using the OHRRPGCE engine.
* Before Creator/BandaiNamcoEntertainment shut Platform/ShiftyLook down, it created three animated web-series based on its VideoGame/Bravoman and VideoGame/WonderMomo comics, as well as WebAnimation/Mappy, which had no corresponding comic. The Bravoman series was perhaps the most notable of the three, as it had high production values and featured prolific voice actors such as Creator/RobPaulsen, Creator/DeeBradleyBaker, and Creator/JenniferHale; Wonder Momo was a web anime with a Japanese voice cast, as part of a largely failed attempt to make the series a multimedia project; Mappy featured a low budget, extremely limited animation, and only two voice actors for most of the series, something which it regularly lampoons.
* [=ShiftyLook=] aside, Namco also adapted and recycled the story assets from the cancelled RealTimeStrategy game New Space Order for its 10-episode web-anime tie-in Link of Life. Though the game was long cancelled, the anime can be watched and downloaded.
* VideoGame/SonicManiaPlus and VideoGame/TeamSonicRacing both received a series of promotional web animated shorts, WebAnimation/SonicManiaAdventures and WebAnimation/TeamSonicRacingOverdrive, all directed under the art style of Creator/TysonHesse.
* WebAnimation/SubwaySurfersTheAnimatedSeries is an animated web-series based off of the mobile game VideoGame/SubwaySurfers.

* WebVideo/MortalKombatLegacy is a live-action web series directed by [=NetherRealm=] Studios that is a more realistic take on the Franchise/MortalKombat series, inspired by the pitch video WebVideo/MortalKombatRebirth.
* WebVideo/StreetFighterAssassinsFist, an adaptation of Franchise/StreetFighter produced by Creator/Capcom that was originally uploaded on Machinima.

* VideoGame/ApeEscape had a Nicktoons flash-animated cartoon.
* WesternAnimation/Arcane, a Creator/Netflix original series showing the shared backstory of a number of VideoGame/LeagueOfLegends champions in the layered cities of Steampunk Piltover and Biopunk Zaun, centering on Vi and Jinx.
* VideoGame/BackyardSports had a TV special, NFL Backyard Basics: Football Tips from the Pros.
* TabletopGame/BattleTech
* WesternAnimation/Battletoads had a pilot episode aired as a try-out for a potential series. It was never made into a full series.
* A WesternAnimation/Bubsy pilot was made and broadcast.
* WesternAnimation/CaptainNTheGameMaster is a borderline case, since it is a MassiveMultiplayerCrossover in an original setting.
* WesternAnimation/Castlevania2017 is an animesque Creator/Netflix Original Series by Creator/FrederatorStudios based on the long-running Franchise/Castlevania series, mainly VideoGame/CastlevaniaIIIDraculasCurse with elements from VideoGame/CastlevaniaSymphonyOfTheNight and VideoGame/CastlevaniaCurseOfDarkness.
** WesternAnimation/CastlevaniaNocturne is a SequelSeries to the 2017 series, based off VideoGame/CastlevaniaRondoOfBlood.
* WesternAnimation/TheCupheadShow
* VideoGame/Darkstalkers had a short one-season series.
* WesternAnimation/DonkeyKongCountry, a French/Canadian adaptation of a British-developed installment of a Japanese franchise.
* WesternAnimation/DotaDragonsBlood, an animesque Creator/Netflix Original Series based loosely on the world and heroes of VideoGame/Dota2. It specifically stars Dragon Knight, Lunacy Mirana, Luna, Invoker, and Terrorblade.
* WesternAnimation/DoubleDragon1993 - 26-episodes in 1994 and 1995. It barely had anything to do with the original games as Billy and Jimmy were turned into twins separate from birth and were given beam-shooting swords and dragon masks. It had a tie-in fighting game for the SNES, Genesis, and Jaguar.
* VideoGame/DragonsLair
* WesternAnimation/DungeonsAndDragons1983
* WesternAnimation/EarthwormJim, which was also one of the few early WesternAnimation examples that was well-received.
* An VideoGame/EternalChampions series was planned, but the franchise as a whole was stopped dead in its tracks early on in its life to pump Sega of Japan's VideoGame/VirtuaFighter.
* TabletopGame/HeavyGear: The CGI series suffered from AdaptationDecay to the point where the tabletop RPG retconned it as in-universe Southern Republic propaganda.
* Super fighting robot... WesternAnimation/RubySpears! This one is an interesting example, as it was a joint effort between Ruby-Spears and a Japanese animation studio, and has a somewhat Animesque artstyle.
** WesternAnimation/MegaManFullyCharged, a HighSchoolAU and produced by Creator/ManOfActionStudios, began airing in Fall of 2018.
* WesternAnimation/MortalKombatDefendersOfTheRealm, which also marked the debut of antagonist Quan Chi, who would go on to later appear in future games, starting with VideoGame/MortalKombatMythologiesSubZero and VideoGame/MortalKombat4.
* WesternAnimation/MutantLeague had a cartoon that ran for two seasons, which is pretty lengthy considering most video game cartoons don't last past one season.

* VideoGame/PacMan
** WesternAnimation/PacMan, the UrExample
** WesternAnimation/PacManAndTheGhostlyAdventures
* WesternAnimation/PolePosition, InNameOnly
* The Power Team (aka Acclaim Masters), a cartoon co-produced by DIC Entertainment, Bohbot Entertainment and Creator/Acclaim, which took the basic premise of Captain N and inverted it by having five characters from different Acclaim-published console games (NARC, Wizards & Warriors, Arch Rivals, Kwirk, and Bigfoottwo which were based on previously existing arcade games) transported to the "real world" in order to protect it from either Mr. Big and his gang (from NARC) or the evil wizard Malkil (from Wizards and Warriors) depending on the episode. The cartoon originated as a series of shorts that aired within the first season of Video Power (i.e., when it was a game reviewing show). When Video Power became a game show in its second season, the Power Team segments were then re-edited into half-hour episodes.
* VideoGame/Rayman had a 3D series that only lasted four episodes. A full season was planned, but it's rumored that the company didn't have a large enough budget for the rest of the episodes.
* WesternAnimation/SamAndMaxFreelancePolice is another borderline case, based on a game based on a comic.
* WesternAnimation/SaturdaySupercade had several: Franchise/DonkeyKong, Donkey Kong Junior, VideoGame/Frogger, VideoGame/Pitfall and VideoGame/QBert. In the second season, Kangaroo and VideoGame/SpaceAce replaced Frogger and Pitfall.
* Franchise/SonicTheHedgehog
** WesternAnimation/AdventuresOfSonicTheHedgehog.
** WesternAnimation/SonicTheHedgehogSatAM.
** WesternAnimation/SonicUnderground.
** WesternAnimation/SonicBoom.
** WesternAnimation/SonicPrime.
* WesternAnimation/StreetFighter, although this one was actually written as a semi-sequel to the movie.
* Series/TheSuperMarioBrosSuperShow is a part live-action series with animated segments based on VideoGame/SuperMarioBros2 (with Bowser/King Koopa substituting for Wart) and WesternAnimation/TheLegendOfZelda1989. It was retooled for the second season as a purely animated show based on VideoGame/SuperMarioBros3 and for its third and final season, it was reduced to 15-minute segments based on VideoGame/SuperMarioWorld alongside Captain N.
* VideoGame/TakAndThePowerOfJuju: An interesting example of AdaptationDisplacement, as the animated series was meant to come out alongside of the original game; the show ended up being delayed so much that the entire trilogy came out before the cartoon premiered, resulting in the games being more well-known and the series differing from those titles in several ways.
* Franchise/TombRaider had an online series on Gametap.
* VideoGame/VivaPinata
* WesternAnimation/Wakfu: The animated series was always intended as part of a cross-media franchise, but the game's universe was the first to be established, it being a continuation of its predecessor VideoGame/Dofus.
* WesternAnimation/WhereOnEarthIsCarmenSandiego
* WesternAnimation/WingCommanderAcademy, done by the same guys that made WesternAnimation/ExoSquad. Unusual for, despite being a PragmaticAdaptation on what was then a low-budget cable channel, being incredibly detailed and accurate to the games (down to the instrument panels), even having the motion-capture actors (including Creator/ThomasFWilson, Creator/MalcolmMcDowell and even Creator/MarkHamill) reprise their roles from the games!
