As such, it's implied the trauma stunted her emotional and mental growth (we see evidence of it beforehand, given her behavior as a BrattyTeenageDaughter to her mother figure, former empress and current advisor). Interestingly enough, despite being a teenager/young adult, Luffy acts very much like a CheerfulChild, giving the pair an odd commonality of acting far younger than their actual age (if for very different reasons).
