22In movies and television, a locked door, or a padlock on a cage is never an impediment so long as the Hero has bullets to spare. One or two shots is generally enough to destroy the lock, allowing the door to open.

24Unfortunately, in real life -- as shown by the ''Series/MythBusters'' -- this requires a high-powered gun at close range, which causes lots of very dangerous shrapnel. Weaker firearms, mainly pistols, are ineffective against standard padlocks.

26Ballistic breaching is only used by the military or SWAT, and it usually involves a modified shotgun, Kevlar body armor, and specialized [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Breaching_round breaching rounds.]] The [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Door_breaching#Ballistic breaching operation]] is performed with the muzzle in contact with the door, or as close as possible, and angled downwards at a 45 degree angle. For a breach on the latch side, two shots are fired at a point halfway between the lock or handle and the door frame to hit the lock's bolt, and then an attempt is made to open the door before repeating if necessary. A hinge-side breach calls for a total of three shots per hinge followed by an attempt to open the door.

28The old standby "entry tool" (a small battering ram) is a better choice in most situations. The reason breaching shotguns exist at all is that a battering ram requires at least two people to operate, and the shotgun can be used to shoot bad guys too. That, or a good hard kick on a relatively [[MyopicArchitecture flimsy door]].[[note]]The [=MythBusters=] have done that one, too. The only reason it failed was that one lock was installed with a stronger screw than was included with the installation kit, and even that one ''would'' have failed eventually if they'd kept going.[[/note]]

30Attempts to shoot the lock mechanism itself tend to leave the distorted metal jammed in place while the bolt or latch remains closed. In effect, the door is now ''more'' locked than if you had left it alone. (Which some people do take advantage of.) Although if you decided to shoot the lock with a [[GrenadeLauncher Rocket Launcher]], [[ThereIsNoKillLikeOverkill that's]] [[ThereWasADoor another]] [[OpenSaysMe story]].

This is an interesting application of RealityIsUnrealistic, because its effectiveness is based on viewers' expectations that a lock will break when shot. (Of course, the actual results will vary depending on the type and caliber of ammo used; a .30-caliber ''armor-piercing'' round will usually drill a fairly clean hole through such a lock without damaging the part which holds the shackle closed if hit dead-center.
