Context Main / SayMyNameTrailer

Go To

A particular type of trailer or advertisement for a show which focuses on little besides the main character and making sure the audience damn well remembers the main character, and by extension, the film's name. Essentially, you take a bunch of unrelated scenes from the production and edit them together to get a SayMyName sequence.

This is most common with children's films with a character title name (or at least a character's name in the title). The trailer has, at some point, the various secondary cast members saying the main character's name in quick succession (sometimes, but not usually, including the main character self-identifying). There are ads that can be nothing but this sequence. For instance, the trailer for Bob: TheMovie would go something like:

->Sidekick: BOB!\
Girlfriend: Bob?\
BigBad: Bob!\
Janitor: Bob!\
Mother: Bob!\
TheDragon: BOB?!\
Crowd: BOB!

Etc. etc. etc.

Of course, ViewersAreMorons, especially children, so maybe repeating the name of the movie and main character 50 times quickly in one commercial will get it to stick into their sugar-riddled brains. It's like an Anvilicious TitleDrop.

* The episode preview for the final episode of Anime/DNAngel consisted almost entirely of clips of many different characters saying or shouting Dark's name.
* An Creator/AdultSwim promo for Anime/InuYasha consisted of clips of the titular character and his s Kagome saying each other's names.

* WesternAnimation/WallE (Granted, being R2-D2 in Love, half the movie itself is SayMyName)
* The first Tinker Bell movie
* WesternAnimation/Igor
* Disney's WesternAnimation/Hercules. Of course, the last clip in this one is Hades saying "Jerkules".
* WesternAnimation/KuboAndTheTwoStrings
* WesternAnimation/Bolt
* Literature/TheTaleOfDespereaux
* WesternAnimation/Ratatouille, complete with pronunciation guide. It's not a character's name, but a food's name said in this one.
* WesternAnimation/Shrek1
* Some advertising spots for WesternAnimation/2010 were Say "Dragons" Trailers.
* WesternAnimation/2011.
* WesternAnimation/WreckItRalph -- in this case, just "Ralph" does the trick.
* WesternAnimation/Paranorman

* Film/Arachnophobia: There was a trailer that plays with this, as moviegoers were asked what the fear of spiders was called. Given it was released during the build up to UsefulNotes/TheGulfWar, the last one says "Iraqiphobia?"
* Film/HarryPotter
* Literature/StuartLittle
* Film/Juno (OscarBait, oddly enough)
* The trailer for Film/InBruges includes a brief montage of about half the times the word "Bruges" is used in the film. The film itself can be played as a DrinkingGame. Which is good, because by the end of it, you'll really want a drink.
* Film/Salt
* Film/CharlieWilsonsWar
* Film/TheAdventuresOfPlutoNash
* Film/JonahHex2010: It was "only" three or four times, but at least one trailer has this.
* Film/TheresSomethingAboutMary
* ComicBook/TamaraDrewe
* It wasn't actually used to promote the movie, but the DVD of The Family Man has an extra called "Hi Jack Montage", which is exactly what you'd think it is.
* Literature/HarrietTheSpy
* Film/PiratesOfTheCaribbeanDeadMansChest did this for Captain Jack Sparrow in one TV spot, with most of the characters just using "Jack".
* Imagine the phrase "My name is Domino Harvey" repeated about seventy times and you'll have a pretty good idea of what the Film/2005 trailer is like.
* One TV ad for Film/MirrorMirror is a Say "Snow White" Trailer.
* Film/IndianaJonesAndTheKingdomOfTheCrystalSkull
* The teaser trailer to Film/ZeroDarkThirty seems to be a marathon of saying UsefulNotes/OsamaBinLaden's name over and over.
* Film/Cujo

* A few ads for Series/UglyBetty have done this.
* The TV ads for Series/Chuck
* Creator/DisneyChannel used a set of these for Series/TheSuiteLifeOfZackAndCody. Maddie, London, and each of the the twins had one.
* The Series/Community episode "App Development and Condiments" ends with one of these for an 80's sex comedy starring the character Koogler. (The character wasn't seen outside of the episode.)

* This trailer for the Big Finish Series/DoctorWho special "The Five Companions" introduces all the companions and enemies in a quick back-and-forth SayMyName montage, ending as all the major players name-drop the Doctor and he pretends they've got the wrong guy.

* VideoGame/AlphaProtocol

* A variation: one ad for WesternAnimation/JamesBondJr featured the following exchange:
-->Girl: (with admiration) James!\
Villain: BOND!!!\
James Bond Jr.: Jr.!
* In WesternAnimation/TheSimpsons, episode "Krusty Gets Kancelled", a commercial within the show was just the word "Gabbo" said and shown over and over again. Gabbo himself wasn't necessary for a no-context advertisement campaign meant to create interest in his show.
-->Bart: Did you see that?\
Homer: Yeah...\
Bart: What do you think it means?\
Homer: I figure it's some guy's name...some guy named "Gabbo".
* A trailer for an episode of WesternAnimation/StarWarsTheCloneWars had repetitions of "Deathwatch"

* WesternAnimation/DanVs has a commercial rapidly cutting between different characters shouting the titular character's name, capped off with:
-->Dan: "Vengeance, thy name is Dan!!"
* WesternAnimation/SofiaTheFirst gets one of these.
