Red things just seem to go faster. In fiction, make something vermilion and you can almost guarantee it'll move quicker, as if the ''color itself'' [[ArtisticLicensePhysics reduces drag, lowers inertia and increases forward momentum]]. A visual shorthand for getting the point across that an object is zippy.

TruthInTelevision: Red apparently [[http://www.empower-yourself-with-color-psychology.com/color-red.html promotes adrenaline release]] and [[http://psychology.about.com/od/sensationandperception/a/color_red.htm feelings of excitement or intensity,]] which can certainly give the ''appearance'' that a red object is moving faster, as well as possibly encourage the drivers of red vehicles to push the envelope more. Also, the [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doppler_Effect Doppler Effect]] makes things red-shifted if they're moving ''away'' from you at a high speed (read: significant fraction of ''the speed of light''). Don't expect there to be any evolutionary basis for this, however, as it's unlikely any human would ever get to see it with the naked eye. Additionally, red in fiction tends to be associated with elements/powers that go well with energy and thus speed, like [[FireIsRed fire]] and lightning.

[[JustForFun/IThoughtItMeant Not at all related]] to RedHerring or RedShirt. HotPaintJob (basically "things with flames painted on them go faster") may be considered a sister trope, as [[FireIsRed red and fire are of course associated]].

SubTrope of LawOfChromaticSuperiority and ColorCodedForYourConvenience. Compare GoldColoredSuperiority for another color that is considered greater than others (sometimes even red).

!!Examples:

[[foldercontrol]]

[[folder:Advertising]]
* "Red goes faster" is the car salesman's mantra. [[spoiler:Followed closely by "The red one costs about 5000 more, but it's worth it! Just look at that sheen~"]]
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Anime and Manga]]
* Played with in ''Manga/BakusouKyoudaiLetsAndGo'', Retsu's red Sonic cars are definitely one of the faster, [[CripplingOverspecialization but at cornering instead of max speed]]. The speedy cars his brother own, meanwhile, has red as a secondary color.
* ''Manga/{{Doraemon}}'': Doraemon has a gadget called "Feeling Cologne" that consists of two colognes, one that makes you go faster when you spray it on you and one that makes you go slower. The fast one has a red label, while the slow one has a blue label.
* While there are earlier examples, the ''Franchise/{{Gundam}}'' series not only become enamored with this trope, but also act as a TropeCodifier in Japan. In the [[Anime/MobileSuitGundam original Gundam]], the only way one could tell apart [[AcePilot Char Aznable]], the [[RedBaron Red Comet's]] [[AMechByAnyOtherName mobile suit]], from any other was because it was [[AceCustom painted red and was three times faster than other suits]][[note]]Char liked to slap larger engines onto his suits, and his fighting style also took full advantage of a mobile suit's legs by using them to "jump" off enemy battleships while attacking them point-black for an extra speed boost. Some adaptations also imply that his Newtype biology had higher tolerance for high G acceleration than normal people, allowing him to fight effectively while redlining the engines. For the movie trilogy version the speed increase was retconned to only ''one third'' faster, as triple the speed of a standard Zaku is an insane performance boost that was one of the anime's holdovers from the SuperRobot genre.[[/note]] (which would otherwise be identical in appearance). This, coupled with Char's [[MagnificentBastard magnetic personality]] and [[EnsembleDarkhorse sheer popularity]], has managed to [[MemeticMutation immortalize]] red suits as belonging to [[TheRival Rivals]] in other Gundam series. See LawOfChromaticSuperiority and CharClone for further details.
** ''Anime/MobileSuitGundam00'' revisits this concept with the Trans-Am mode, which turns the suit red and three times faster.
* In ''Anime/HeartcatchPrettyCure'', if the Cures douse themselves with red perfume made from Heart Seeds, they get a red aura and a speed boost.
* In ''Franchise/LyricalNanoha'', [[SuperSpeed speed-based fighter]] Fate Testarossa-Harlaown typically wears Barrier Jackets with red belts crisscrossed all over it, while her adopted son and fellow speedster Erio Mondial primarily wears red for his Barrier Jackets and has red hair. And most importly, her [[WhatBeautifulEyes beautiful,]] [[MemeticMutation sad eyes]] are [[RedEyesTakeWarning red]].
** The redheaded Nove is faster than her sister Subaru because her [[RollerbladeGood Jet Edge is lighter than Subaru's Mach Caliber]].
** Deed, who has red eyes and red magic color, is also one of the fastest Numbers.
** Chantez Arpinion has red Knight Clothing and her skill is translated either as "SuperSpeed", "Agile Speed", "Dreadful Speed" or etc.
** Vita, the red Knight of the Iron Hammer, subverts this. She's not particularly slow, but is a MightyGlacier.
* The Manga/OutlawStar is said to be the fastest ship in the galaxy. When asked about the color, Gene had 'em paint it red.
* The main antagonists ''Anime/PokemonGenesectAndTheLegendAwakened'' are a group of Genesect. Their leader, a Shiny Genesect (who is red-coloured), knows [[ActionInitiative Extreme Speed]]. {{Exaggerated|Trope}} when this same Genesect was made available in the games through a downloadable event for those who saw the movie in Japan; along with knowing the aforementioned Extreme Speed, it has a Hasty nature[[labelnote:*]]boosts Speed, reduces Defense[[/labelnote]], knows Shift Gear[[labelnote:*]]raises Speed by two stages alongside Attack by one stage[[/labelnote]], and holds a Choice Scarf[[labelnote:*]]boosts Speed by 50% at the cost of locking it into only using the first move it uses[[/labelnote]].
* In the ''Manga/RanmaOneHalf'' anime, Ranma gets a huge increase in speed in his [[SuperGenderBender female form]], who has red hair instead of black. For female martial artists, red wunz go fasta.
* Anime/SpeedRacer's car has red features.
* ''Anime/TransformersRobotsInDisguise'': Side Burn is the fastest of the three [[SiblingTeam Autobot Brothers]]. While he is blue in normal form, his SuperMode [[PowerupFullColorChange turns him red.]]
* One episode of ''Anime/{{Voltron}}'' had Zarkon recruit an elite pilot to defeat the Voltron Force, who demanded a ship customized to his exact specifications for the job. The specifications were about high-speed performance and painting it red.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Comic Books]]
* ''ComicBook/TheEternals'': The Eternal Makkari has super speed and wears a red and white costume.
* All of ComicBook/TheFlash's costumes are predominantly red. (Except [[KidSidekick Kid Flash]], which was yellow and red.)
* ''ComicBook/{{Invincible}}'': The aptly named Red Rush had super speed and wore a red suit.
* ''Franchise/WonderWoman'':
** Diana wears a red bustier and red boots. She possesses the speed of Hermes and is faster than all of the Amazons save Donna Troy and Cassie Sandsmark who also wear red and have super speed[[note]]Although Donna retains her super speed, she has since switched to black[[/note]]. Diana has even been stated to be faster than Hermes and has bested him in a foot race at least once.
** ''ComicBook/WonderWoman1987'': The Messner-Loebs run introduced Mayfly, an assassin with super speed comparable to the Flash. She too wore red.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Film -- Animated]]
* ''Franchise/{{Cars}}'': Lightning [=McQueen=] is red and, as seen in the page image, he's very fast.
** ''WesternAnimation/Cars2'' introduced Francesco Bernoulli, who's also (mostly) red and also very fast.
* ''WesternAnimation/LiloAndStitch'': When Experiment 626 steals a police cruiser to escape, of course he takes the red one. {{Lampshaded}} by his (now former) captors. The [[AllThereInTheManual supplementary material]] explicitly states that it is the fastest of the police cruisers.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Film -- Live-Action]]
* In ''Franchise/StarWars'': ''Film/ANewHope'', the Battle of Yavin consists of two squadrons of Rebel fighters and bombers attacking the AchillesHeel of the Galactic Empire's battle station, the planet-destroying Death Star. There's Gold Squadron, which is made of slow Y-wing bombers, and Red Squadron, which is made of X-wing starfighters, which are much faster. Said X-wings are decorated with a red band.
* Subverted in ''Film/TronLegacy'' - during the Light Cycle game, Sam Flynn ends up on the blue team, and one of his allies mentions their opponents' cycles are faster. It's not specifically because of the colour, though; it's because [[TheComputerIsACheatingBastard CLU is on the enemy team]], and his army happens to be [[ColorCodedArmies colour-coded red]].
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Literature]]
* Red Hare, Lü Bu's horse from ''Literature/RomanceOfTheThreeKingdoms''. Said to be as quick as any rabbit and famed for being a horse among horses during the era of the Three Kingdoms, it is described in the novel as "uniform ashen red, with not a hair of another colour" and "capable of travelling 1,000 li (approximately 500 km) in a day". In the ''VideoGame/DynastyWarriors'' series of games, it is also the fastest horse that one could get.
* Inverted in ''Literature/TheBerenstainBears and the Big Road Race'', in which Brother Bear drives a red car and is ridiculed by the other competitors for being extremely slow.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Live-Action TV]]
* ''Series/TheExpanse'': Right from the beginning of the show, Julie Mao's champion racing ship, the ''Razorback'', is touted as one of the fastest ships ever built. The ship itself doesn't appear on screen until the third season, but when it is first seen, it has a primarily red colour scheme.
* In ''Series/SpaceAboveAndBeyond'', there is an episode where the Chigs are shown to have specially modified fighters that can skip across the event horizon of a black hole. They look exactly like regular Chig fighters except that they are red.
* ''Franchise/PowerRangers'':
** ''Series/PowerRangersDinoThunder'': Connor, the Red Ranger, has super speed as his civilian power. The White Ranger Trent has a red visor and can also move superfast in Ranger form.
** ''Series/PowerRangersRPM'': Scott is a Red Ranger and also has super speed. Unlike Conner, this power is available to him in Ranger form.
* Hiromu Sakurada/Red Buster of ''Series/TokumeiSentaiGobusters'' also has super speed as his power.
* Series/KamenRiderDrive's Type Speed is his red base form that happens to be faster than his other two basic forms, as the name would suggest.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Newspaper Comics]]
* In ''ComicStrip/ThePerishers'', Marlon was convinced his soapbox cart was faster once Wellington painted a red stripe on it.
-->'''Wellington''': Well, if it makes you happy to think so.
-->''(Marlon leaves)''
-->'''Wellington''': What's ''in'' this paint?
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Tabletop Games]]
* ''TabletopGame/{{Warhammer 40000}}'' is the TropeNamer:
** [[Characters/Warhammer40000Orks Ork]] vehicles go faster when they're red because [[ClapYourHandsIfYouBelieve Orks think they do]]. (Technically Orks are a little bit psychic, but don't know it, and the mass belief causes a small alteration in the engine's reality. One assumes if enough colour-blind orks formed an army, then GREEN ones would go faster...) This is reflected in-game; for a small extra deployment cost, you can give any Ork model with a red paintjob a bonus to its move radius. [[RealityWarper Orks believe really, really good.]] In previous editions this was the only upgrade that actually mandated you to use a specific color (It's no longer a requirement by a strict reading of the rules, but if you can successfully convince someone that your not-red car is really red, it would be a feat worthy of an Ork).
** The Blood Angels [[Characters/Warhammer40000Astartes Space Marines]] are noted for wearing red armor. Their vehicles are able to be outfitted with extra strong engines that give them additional movement distances each turn. They are also able to field a specific jump pack equipped unit that receives extra movement compared to other Space Marine jump pack troops.
** Saim-Hann, the [[Characters/Warhammer40000Eldar Eldar]] craftworld that makes most use of jetbikes and fast skimmers, also uses red as their primary colour.
** Khorne Berserkers, in most editions, are usually capable of legging it faster than any other infantry out of sheer murder-rage.
** Averted by [[Characters/Warhammer40000TauEmpire Tau]] commander Farsight's custom red battlesuit, which is not in fact three times faster than a regular one (it's considerably better in combat, though).
* Inverted in ''TabletopGame/IronKingdoms'' in the case of Khador, whose Warjacks are painted red and are among the slowest in the game.
* Red creatures in ''TabletopGame/MagicTheGathering'' are likely to have speed abilities such as haste and first strike. Red decks are also the most likely to rely on a quick start and burning through their hand to kill their opponent before the enemy deck can bring out its powerful abilities.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Toys]]
* ''Toys/{{BIONICLE}}'': The Axalara T9 was the fastest and most powerful of the vehicles in the Codrex, and the only red one.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Tropes]]
* The RedOniBlueOni duo defines the "Red Oni" character as quicker to jump into something than the more relaxed "Blue Oni".
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Video Games]]
* ''VideoGame/PacMan'' has Blinky, the red ghost. While he's no faster than the other ghosts at first, after a certain amount of dots have been eaten, he speeds up to be faster than the other ghosts. After a few more, he speeds up even more to the point where he's ''faster than Pac-Man himself''. Considering that he's also programmed to be TheDeterminator, this generally makes the final stretch of each level much more difficult as it takes much more effort to shake him off your tail.
* ''VideoGame/DawnOfWar'': The Orcs vehicle speed upgrade is called "Da Red Wunz go Fasta."
* Link's Loftwing in ''VideoGame/TheLegendOfZeldaSkywardSword'' is said to be the fastest in all of Skyloft. It's known as the Crimson Loftwing.
** Before, in ''[[VideoGame/TheLegendOfZeldaOcarinaOfTime Ocarina of Time]]'', Epona is the fastest horse on Lon Lon Ranch. How can you tell? Because she's red. Her ''[[VideoGame/TheLegendOfZeldaBreathOfTheWild Breath of the Wild]]'' incarnation has some of the best stats of all the potential mounts, though only if you use amiibo.
** And before even then, in ''Videogame/TheLegendOfZeldaALinkToThePast'', your Boomerang can be upgraded so that it flies farther and faster. Not only does it turn red, it trails [[EverythingsBetterWithSparkles sparkles]] behind it.
* ''VideoGame/TheSimpsonsGame'' has this as one of the many collectible Video Game Cliches.
** Subtly notable in ''VideoGame/TheSimpsonsHitAndRun'' in which Bart's Ferrini, the hover bike and the open-wheel UsefulNotes/FormulaOne car have some of the highest acceleration and speed stats of the game.
* In ''VideoGame/MarioKart7'', one of the customizable tire sets that can be used on a kart is the Red Monster wheels, which have a slightly higher acceleration than the normal Monster Wheels, which are blue.
* ''VideoGame/SuperMarioGalaxy2'' has two temporary examples: the Dash Pepper turns Yoshi red and gives him enough speed to run up walls and on water, and the Rainbow Star increases Mario or Luigi's speed and turns them red as opposed to the flashing multicolored version from [[VideoGame/SuperMarioGalaxy the first game]] though still leaves multicolored [[SpeedEchoes duplicates to emphasize their speed]].
* ''VideoGame/WorldOfWarcraft'' has an achievement named after this: "Why? Because it's red." It refers to the rarest of the Temple of Ahn'Qiraj mounts - the red one. (It doesn't actually go faster though.)
* ''VideoGame/SonicTheHedgehog''.
** [[InvertedTrope Inverted between Sonic and Knuckles]]. While Knuckles is colored red, and he is quite fast, he pales in comparison to other characters like Sonic and Tails. However Sonic's trademark choice of red footwear is very much this trope played straight.
** Played mostly straight with the springs in the early 16-bit games in the series. The yellow-colored springs provide a slight speed and height boost when bounced upon, and the red ones make Sonic jump much higher and move much faster. ''VideoGame/KnucklesChaotix'' added blue springs in certain stages, which were even more powerful than the red ones.
** ''VideoGame/SonicHeroes'': Amy wears a red dress and boots and is the "speed" character of Team Rose.
* In both ''VideoGame/{{Tomba}}'' games, Tomba can equip different colored pants to increase his speed. Both times, the pants that give the greatest speed boost are red.
* While there are plenty of other red robots from ''VideoGame/MegaManClassic'' that aren't considered very fast, the red [[VideoGame/MegaMan2 Quick Man]] was built to be the fastest robot in the series. Also, ''VideoGame/MegaManX's'' and ''VideoGame/MegaManZero's'' Zero is quite the LightningBruiser.
* In ''Escape from the Planet of the Robot Monsters'', the red MechaMooks act like the ordinary white ones, except that they move considerably faster.
* ''VideoGame/FiveNightsAtFreddys'': Foxy the Pirate Fox has a red suit, and he's able to run from his cove to your office in mere seconds.
* A secret EasterEgg camouflage in ''[[Videogame/MechWarrior MechWarrior Living Legends]]'' for the Uziel paints the entire battlemech a dark red, with [[NoseArt yellow eyes and teeth]]. The Uziel is one of the most agile Medium mechs, as it is usually paired with either a JumpJetPack or [[NitroBoost MASC]]. The Sparrowhawk aerospace fighter - an extremely agile scout plane -- has a gunmetal gray fuselage with red stripes and [[NoseArt shark teeth]].
* Driver M.Rossi in the ''Videogame/ForzaMotorsport'' series. He's not necessarily faster, but he is a ''much'' more aggressive driver than the other AIs. And unless the car he's driving has an ad-festooned livery, it will be painted ''[[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rosso_corsa rosso corsa]]''.
* In the ''[[Videogame/{{X}} X-Universe]]'' series, Split Dynasty ships are painted a rusty red and are with only a few exceptions the [[FragileSpeedster fastest and least shielded]] ship in their class. Pirate ships are modified with sweet flame NoseArt and are, for most the part, faster than the original Argon, Teladi, and Split ships they are based on.
* In ''VideoGame/LegoIsland'' Nubby will sometimes ask the player if red cars are faster than blue cars. He then asks if it's the colors that make the car run faster. Very strange coming from him since he's supposed to be a ''mechanic''.
* One of the Adornments in ''VideoGame/FinalFantasyXIII2'' is a red chocobo chick that says the trope title word for word.
* In the ''VideoGame/DynastyWarriors'', the fastest mount you can get is the Red Hare--which, as its name indicates, is a red-coated ''horse''.
* In ''VideoGame/SuperMarioMaker'', enemies and items that spawn from red pipes will appear faster and more frequently.
* In ''VideoGame/TopGear'' for the Super NES, the red car (clearly a {{Fauxrrari}}) has the highest top speed, albeit it also leads in fuel consumption.
* The red snail from ''VideoGame/UncleAlbertsMagicalAlbum'' is faster than the others.
* In ''VideoGame/GalaxyAngel'', Ranpha's Emblem Frame, the Kung-Fu Fighter, is primarily red in color, and is the fastest among the Moon Angel Wing, although it also has the weakest armor and thus being unable to take as much punishment as the others. It also applies to Anise's Relic Raider in the ''VideoGame/GalaxyAngelII'' trilogy, which is also the fastest in the team and a shade of red.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Web Comics]]
* Given a LampshadeHanging in [[http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0817.html this]] ''WebComic/TheOrderOfTheStick'' strip when Tarquin describes his fastest FlyingCarpet.
--> '''Tarquin''': This is my fastest FlyingCarpet, Elan. You'll note both its red color as well as its racing stripes.
* ''Webcomic/StarImpact'''s [[TheLancer Phoebe]] has red and black as her [[ColorCodedCharacters signature colors]], and she's very fleet-footed, able to effortlessly outmaneuver [[MightyGlacier Aster]] during their Chapter 2 fight. What's more, Phoebe's [[PowerFist special boxing gloves]] give her the [[EveryoneHasASpecialMove ability]] to FlashStep around the ring, making her a FragileSpeedster par excellence.
* ''Space Blood'' inverts this with Zalda Len's Space Destroyer and Space Fighter, Which are {{purple|IsPowerful}} and move three times faster than the mass produced red versions [[http://space-blood.thecomicseries.com/comics/15 as mentioned here]].
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Western Animation]]
* In the ''WesternAnimation/{{Futurama}}'' episode "[[Recap/FuturamaS3E12TheRouteOfAllEvil The Route Of All Evil]]", Cubert and Dwight take over Planet Express, rename it Awesome Express, and repaint the ship red and give it flame decals for this very reason.
-->'''Cubert:''' Leela, help me apply these flame decals I got in my cereal. They'll make the ship go faster.\
'''Leela:''' And what's your scientific basis for thinking that?\
'''Cubert:''' I'm 12.
* Bello is a firm believer of this in ''WesternAnimation/JellyJamm''; in one episode he tells Mina her swing would go much faster if it were painted red.
* Although there are multiple colors represented, ''WesternAnimation/MyLittlePonyFriendshipIsMagic'' has Rainbow Dash, wielder of the red MineralMacGuffin, and red is the predominant color when she is doing one of her super speed stunts.
* In ''WesternAnimation/SymBionicTitan'', Chan's road racer is painted red.
* In ''WesternAnimation/SouthPark'', Randy argues that painting a pinewood derby car red was the main reason it went faster-than-light. Of course, the real reason is because he stole a magnet from the Large Hadron Collider and put it in the car.
* In ''WesternAnimation/VoltronLegendaryDefender'', Allura explains that the Red Lion is the fastest and most agile of the 5 Lions of Voltron.
* Storyboards of a deleted episode of ''WesternAnimation/{{Plasmo}}'' has Brucho painting the rocket car he and Plasmo are using bright red. Plasmo thinks Brucho did it in honor of himself, though Brucho points out it's only because "the red ones are faster".
* Of the three bikes of the titular WesternAnimation/BikerMiceFromMars, Vinnie's bike (the red one) is accepted as being the speediest, fittingly for the best biker of the trio.
* ''WesternAnimation/LoonaticsUnleashed'': Rev Runner is the red-coded member of the group and is the only one with SuperSpeed.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Real Life]]
%% Fact check to see whether insurance companies charge higher rates due to cars being red.
* Red cars are often more likely to be cited for speeding tickets than other colors. This is probably due to the tendency of people in red cars to go faster than anything directly caused by the color.
** Also, red tends to be a lot more visible on the road, meaning they're more likely to be spotted by cops. This applies to any other brightly-colored vehicle; anything that can stand out in traffic is more easily tracked, even over longer distances, meaning that if the first officer cannot catch up to it, he can radio his buddy up the road to keep an eye out and be ready.
** Red is an incredibly popular color for supercars, to the point that non-red ones actually depreciate (price-wise) at a quicker rate. Enforced Trope?
* Despite being a pick-up truck, the 1978 Dodge Lil' Red Express was the fastest American production vehicle to accelerate from 0 to 100mph. You've read that right, it beat all the Corvettes, Trans Ams and what-have-you. [[ExactlyWhatItSaysOnTheTin And it was indeed red.]]
* For a few years, the Ferrari [=F40=] was the world's fastest street-legal production car ever. And being a Ferrari, most were of course painted red. About the only other car to match it in top speed was the Porsche 959, and most examples of that came in silver, which happens to be the national racing colour of Germany.
* Examples on rails:
** The Midland Railway and its successor, the LMS Railway, painted passenger engines red, such as [[http://www.nrm.org.uk/globalmedia/CD050127_2.png No. 1000]] and the [[http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/f/fa/Duchess_of_Hamilton_streamlined_-_2009-05-19.jpg Duchess of Hamilton.]]
** The German [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DRG_Class_05 05 002]], officially the world's fastest steam locomotive ever (200.4kph/124.5mph), was red. Only two other streamliners (03 193 and 05 001) were red, almost all other Reichsbahn steam locomotives were black with a red running gear and underframe.
** The one-off German [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DR_18_201 18 201]], the fastest still existing steam locomotive in the world (182.4kph/113.3mph), was red from 2002 to 2005 and actually still permitted to reach 180kph/112mph at that time.
** The Russian [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TEP80 TEP80-0002]], the world's fastest diesel locomotive (271kph/168mph), is at least partially red. Mostly orange, but still.
** The four German [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DRG_Class_E_19 class E 19]] locomotives were red when they were delivered in 1938. They were Germany's fastest electric locomotives with a regular maximum speed of 180kph/112mph and a design maximum speed of at least 225kph/140mph. The inter-war Reichsbahn had no other red electric locomotives. After the war, when two locomotives were painted green and two were painted blue, the maximum speed was reduced to 140kph/87mph.
** The Austrian [[https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:1215_050_MIH.jpg 1216 050/025]], the world's fastest electric locomotive and actually ''the world's fastest locomotive, period'' (357kph/222mph), was originally red, too. [[SubvertedTrope Subverted]] because [[https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Schnellfahrt_bei_Hilpoltstein.jpg it was covered with a dark gray foil for the record]] (but it was still red under the foil), and because almost all Austrian locomotives are red nowadays.
** Italy's best high-speed trains are all partly, mostly or entirely red and otherwise white, silver or black. The former state railroad company Trenitalia even calls its high-speed trains "Frecciarossa" which means "red arrow". And NTV's .italo [=AGVs=] are red, too.
** In TheSeventies, Henschel and BBC built three prototypes of the diesel-electric DE 2500 which were tested by the Deutsche Bundesbahn. The white 202 002 from 1971 and the blue 202 004 from 1974 had six axles and a maximum speed of 120kph/75mph. The bright red 202 003, also from 1974, had four axles and a maximum speed of 140kph/87mph.
** In 1986, the Deutsche Bundesbahn introduced a new, very colorful livery scheme. The basic color for urban transit (S-Bahn) was orange, for regional trains it was teal, for [=InterRegio=] long-distance trains (max speed 200kph/124mph) it was blue, and for [=InterCity=] long-distance trains (also max speed 200kph/124mph, but fewer stopovers) it was red.
* The most successful UsefulNotes/FormulaOne racing team is Scuderia Ferrari, 16 titles with their trademark red cars. [=McLaren=] also won most of its titles using a white and red scheme inspired by sponsor Marlboro.
** [=McLaren=] used to have a different color scheme, until they averted the trope by removing paint from the car which [[BoringButPractical made it faster]].
** Inverted when Williams changed from their familiar blue-and-white colours to red for 1998 and promptly had their worst season in a decade, failing to win a single race and finishing a distant 3rd in the championship. They kept the red for 1999, did even ''worse'', and promptly went back to blue-and-white for 2000.
** Plenty of [[TheAllegedCar backmarker teams]] have subverted/inverted the trope: Scuderia Italia, Life, Virgin/Marussia/Manor...
** In the 2019 season, the softest, and therefore fastest, tyre compound had a red trim, meaning that red did really make the car go faster (at the expense of the tyres wearing down faster as well). Not the case in earlier seasons as the red-colored tires were the Super Soft compound, the ''third'' fastest, behind the [[PurpleIsPowerful purple]] Ultra Soft and the pink Hyper Soft.
** During the 1907 Peking to Paris race Prince Scipione Borghese, an Italian aristocrat, [[RambunctiousItalian was so sure of winning at one point]] he took a detour from Moscow to St. Petersburg to take part in a dinner in honor of the race then went back to Moscow and rejoined the race... And ''he actually won''. He was driving a red car, and in his honor Italy adopted ''Rosso Corsa'' (racing red) as its international racing color. While racing colors have started being supplanted by sponsorship liveries from 1968, Ferrari stuck with red (and would instead take sponsors with red colors).
* The 1971 Spa 24 Hours ended up as if an Ork racing team had gone rampant. The Mercedes-Benz tuner AMG took the biggest luxury sedan below the Rolls-Royce league in those days, the Mercedes 300 SEL 6.3 (and that was already a 280 SEL with the factory-mounted engine of the "Großer Mercedes" 600), and turned it into a monster nicknamed [[http://www.car137.com/2010/04/mercedes-benz-300sel-red-sow.html "Red Sow."]] The already humongous 6.3-liter V8 was rebored to 6.8 liters and 420hp, the interior was left as-is except for the rollcage, and the entire ride was painted red. Despite its weight and frequent pit-stops, it was fasta than everything else except one BMW 2800CS. It was heavy, cumbersome, ugly, not to mention built from wreckage before the Spa race, [[TimTaylorTechnology it consumed insane amounts of gas and tires, but it was RED and FAST]].
* Some studies suggest that signals from red cones in the eyes -- photoreceptors that detect the red/orange end of the spectrum -- are processed more quickly by the brain's visual cortex than signals from green or blue cones. Thus, ''seeing'' red literally happens faster than seeing other colors.
* Early in the twentieth century, ''silver'' cars were widely thought to go faster, mainly because silver paint was incredibly uncommon so the colour generally meant that the car wasn't painted, which both reduced weight and indicated that the car was a dedicated racer.
** Almost played straight by Mercedes-Benz: Before their race cars became the fabled "Silver Arrows" by removing the paint, they were red.
* Buses of the [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Empresa_Municipal_de_Transportes_de_Madrid Empresa Municipal de Transportes de Madrid,]] the company that operates almost all the public bus lines of the city of UsefulNotes/{{Madrid}}, Spain, were painted [[https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Emt-madrid-15.JPG red with white stripes]] until the late 2000s when they changed it for [[https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Madrid_-_Autobús_EMT_8824_-_121212_145920.jpg blue]] instead, on the grounds the latter is a more relaxing color than red as explained much above.[[note]]Seats and handrails were red too, later changed to blue, green (for seats reserved for disabled/elderly people and the like) and yellow respectively for the same reason.[[/note]][[AvertedTrope They still are as fast as a public transit bus can be despite the color change]].
* Red light travels faster than other colours of light in substances, due to red light having a larger wavelength than other colours of light. When light enters a denser substance than the one it was previously in, its wavelength decreases, and therefore its speed decreases (since its frequency remains the same). The decrease in wavelength depends on the wavelength of the light beforehand: the lower the original wavelength, the greater the decrease, and the greater the decrease in speed. This means that red light experiences a smaller decrease in speed when it enters a substance than other colours of light. Since all wavelengths of light travel at the same speed in a vacuum, this means that red light travels faster than other colours of light in any substance (including air, but the difference is very small since air's refractive index is only just over 1).
* Anti-fouling paint used in the undersides of ships is usually red in color due to the copper oxides used as a biocide. These prevent worms, weeds, and barnacles from clinging onto a ship causing drag and slowing them down. In other words, a ship with a red underside is faster than one without (since the latter may not have anti-fouling paint).
* It took ''ComicBook/{{Werner}}'' creator Rötger "Brösel" Feldmann five attempts at three races over some three decades to beat a red 1972 Porsche 911 S with a custom-built, four-engine, metallic pink [[CoolBike Horex dragster]].
* [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Budweiser_Rocket Budweiser Rocket]], a rocket car that was to become ''the'' fastest land vehicle ever, was painted red. It failed to officially break the record, but it was certainly very fast during the record attempts.
