This actually carried over to the 2002 reboot, with a Skeletor that was much more ruthless and cruel but still loved his big, purple kitty.

He is very obviously quite fond of Gor, and he's the first thing Grievous wants to see when he gets home and he's very upset when Kit Fisto and Nahdar Vebb kill Gor.
