-->-- '''Wally Langford''' to Kevin French, ''WesternAnimation/MissionHill''

A friendship which develops between two characters that would seem unlikely to be friends, whether it's because of them having diametrically opposed personalities, holding beliefs that would normally get one to try to demonize the other, or some other quirks of their beings that would lead to them clashing. Through their friendship, they learn more about each other and about themselves.

The characters in an Odd Friendship may have little to do with each other initially -- or even begin as bitter enemies -- and their friendship grows over time.

Distinguished from an OddCouple in that these are usually two characters in an ensemble show, or a regular character and a {{Recurr|ingCharacter}}er; whereas an OddCouple usually consists of the two main characters in a show.

[[folder:Comic Books]]
* ''ComicBook/ArchieComics'': [[BettyAndVeronica Betty Cooper and Veronica Lodge]]. Their friendship goes against the very logic that governs every aspect of the universe, and yet...
* ''Franchise/TheDCU'':
** [[ComicBook/Batgirl2000 Cassandra Cain]] and [[ComicBook/Batgirl2009 Stephanie Brown]] zig-zag this. On the one hand they can both be described as and bonded over being teenaged girls who became costumed heroines in part to oppose their abusive supervillain fathers... but then there is the matter of ''degree''.[[note]]Steph's life, aside from her dad's side gig as a third-rate Riddler knock-off, [[OrdinaryHighSchoolStudent was on the depressing side of ordinary]]. Cass was raised in a bunker by one of the world's most feared assassins as an experiment in [[TykeBomb language deprivation and kung fu mastery]] until she ran off at age 8.[[/note]]
** Of course, there's the iconic friendship of {{Ba|dassNormal}}tman and [[FlyingBrick Superman]]. One would not expect the big blue boy scout who works with the law to consider the terrifying vigilante with issues his best friend, but there it is. Heck, Supes is even solar-powered, while most incarnations of the Bat have him refusing to operate in the daytime. Their methods, attitudes, and philosophies differ hugely, but that won't stop them from [[BashBrothers teaming up to curbstomp anyone stupid enough to come to Earth looking for a fight]].
*** Their friendship was not portrayed as particularly unlikely and rocky during MediaNotes/{{the Golden Age|OfComicBooks}}, [[MediaNotes/TheSilverAgeOfComicBooks Silver Age]], and for much of MediaNotes/{{the Bronze Age|OfComicBooks}}. It wasn't until the ''ComicBook/CrisisOnInfiniteEarths'' ContinuityReboot (and ''especially'' post-''[[ComicBook/BatmanTheDarkKnightReturns Dark Knight]]'') that suddenly the idea of them being friends was considered odd.
*** And yet it also makes sense -- both are alienated from humanity in a way. ComicBook/{{Superman}} due to his [[IJustWantToBeNormal powers]] and [[LastOfHisKind alien heritage]], and ComicBook/{{Batman}} because... [[ProperlyParanoid well]], [[MyParentsAreDead he's]] [[TheStoic Batman]]. Theirs is a friendship founded on mutual respect, trust, and admiration, even if they don't always see eye-to-eye. Both of them hope and assume that, should they die, the other one will be there. Both of them are hardline adherents to the "no-kill rule", and they both lost their (biological) parents at a young age. And despite the fact they have ''very'' different respective outlooks on life, they both have a strong sense of right and wrong. And while this leans a little into pragmatism, some stories have established that Batman carries around Kryptonite on his person at all times just in case Superman goes rogue, and that Clark is fully aware of this and trusts Bruce to subdue him if necessary.
** ''ComicBook/{{Batman}}'':
*** CuteButPsycho GenkiGirl ComicBook/HarleyQuinn was friends with Arnold Wesker (Ventriloquist I), an ExtremeDoormat who gets manipulated by a hand puppet (DependingOnTheWriter). This stems mainly from the fact that the first time Harley was put in Arkham Asylum, Wesker was the only inmate who treated her nicely, using his puppets to try and cheer her up. After Wesker was killed, the second Ventriloquist (Peyton Riley) tried to recruit Harley for a job, but she declined out of respect for her friend.
*** DependingOnTheWriter, the Penguin and the Joker have this type of relationship, as well as Penguin and the Mad Hatter or Penguin and the Riddler. In ''ComicBook/DeathOfTheFamily'', in a twisted way, this is how Joker sees his relationship with the other Bat-Villains, like Penguin and Riddler, [[spoiler:and Batman]].
** Hal Jordan[=/=]ComicBook/GreenLantern and Oliver Queen[=/=]ComicBook/GreenArrow get along pretty well despite opposing political and social views (Hal's a straightlaced, conservative {{Space Police}}man while Ollie's a left-leaning VigilanteMan), and they often collaborate together when the opportunity arises, most notably in their [[WalkingTheEarth cross-country tour of America]] during MediaNotes/{{the Bronze Age|OfComicBooks}}.
** ComicBook/PlasticMan and Batman are somehow rather close friends despite Batman's usual distrust towards reformed criminals and [[NoSenseOfHumor lack of humor]], and Plastic Man's status as TheAtoner (though at first he was OnlyInItForTheMoney) and [[FunPersonified goofy personality]].
** ComicBook/PowerGirl and ComicBook/HarleyQuinn are more or less friends after some rather unusual events. Namely, [[spoiler:Power Girl crashes right outside Harley's crib and has LaserGuidedAmnesia. Harley can't resist tricking her into thinking she is her sidekick (which at first seems like Harley just being a {{Troll}}, but it's later revealed she really does think Power Girl is awesome and always wanted to be her sidekick). When Power Girl gets her memory back she's understandably pissed, but leaves Harley unharmed after she grovels and apologizes]]. Later, the two of them have to work together willingly (usually to fight some threat way out of Harley's league), and are basically FireForgedFriends, or at least allies.
** ''ComicBook/Robin1993'': Sebastian Ives is a physical activity averse Jewish geek who freezes up when faced with confrontation and has become very observant and good at avoiding such situations and losing tails in response. Callie Evans is a [[WhiteAngloSaxonProtestant Protesant]] star basketball player who has and will fight if someone is threatening those around her and is near incapable of sitting still. The two date off and on through High School and remain close friends afterwards.
** ''ComicBook/SensationComicsFeaturingWonderWoman: Wonder World'': Epistime and Techne are diametrically different and are paired as Diana's personal guards while she is growing up. Epistime is tall, patient and graceful while Techine is short, tacturn and abrupt. They argue nearly constantly but seem to like each other regardless, and they are both excellent fighters.
** ComicBook/WonderWoman by nature is a very friendly sort, but [[ComicBook/WonderWoman1942 from the start]], her friendship with Etta Candy was presented as odd. The super-powered earnest princess who cares deeply about fitness and the prank loving sarcastic flippant troll who eats candy constantly.
* ''Franchise/MarvelUniverse'':
** ComicBook/{{Cable}}, a [[MessianicArchetype messiah wannabe]]/{{time travel}}ler[=/=]ShellShockedVeteran, and ComicBook/{{Deadpool}}, a [[BunnyEarsLawyer Bunny Ears Assassin]][=/=]DeadpanSnarker[=/=][[FourthWallObserver enemy of the fourth wall]].
** ''ComicBook/FantasticFour'': Prior to the accident that forced them together forever, Mister Fantastic/Reed Richards and The Thing/Ben Grimm, were near perfect personifications of the nerd and (seemingly) DumbJock, yet were the absolute best friends ever. Reed never missed one of Ben's football games, and Ben gave Reed the championship winning game ball. And despite not knowing the significance, Reed kept the ball forever.
** Black Bolt of ''ComicBook/TheInhumans'' has this with Crusher Creel/the Absorbing Man of ''ComicBook/TheMightyThor'', after they broke out of an interstellar prison together. When Creel died, Black Bolt contacted his wife Titania to organise his funeral.
** ''ComicBook/GuardiansOfTheGalaxy'': ComicBook/StarLord/Peter Quill is a former intergalactic super-hero/swashbuckling adventurer-turned-BrokenAce, while ComicBook/RocketRaccoon is... well, he's a ''raccoon''. Also applies to Peter Quill and Jack Flag, who's a street-level superhero from Arizona who "doesn't do cosmic stuff", meaning he's about as different from Quill as it's possible to get. Also also applies to Rocket Raccoon and ComicBook/{{Groot}}, who is a walking tree from Planet X, where he claims to be a king.
** This was the trope for ComicBook/IronMan and ComicBook/CaptainAmerica. Later, it got deconstructed: their differences eventually became too difficult to overcome, and after events like ''ComicBook/CivilWar2006'' and ''ComicBook/TimeRunsOut'', which had Tony acting [[MoralEventHorizon less than heroic in both stories]], their relationship eventually soured to the point where they had a fight to the death. A billionaire engineer who [[TheUnfettered has no problem with doing end-justifies-the-means tactics]] will have a hard time being friends with [[IncorruptiblePurePureness someone who sees things in black and white and is considered by some to be a saint]], especially when they spend most of their relationship going from [[HeterosexualLifePartners loving each other dearly]] to [[VitriolicBestBuds fighting]].
** ComicBook/CaptainAmerica also has another odd friendship. He is the great World War II patriotic hero, and ComicBook/EmmaFrost is a former villain and mutant executive in a sex club/cabal (she was also a former stripper there). However they have a friendship that oddly started when Steve Rogers realized that at the ComicBook/HellfireGala that she reminds him of his mother. He even has a callsign for her when they need to communicate telepathically, it's "Mommy"!
** ComicBook/{{Morbius}} [[OurVampiresAreDifferent the Living Vampire]] is a morose, reserved, serious doctor/scientist from Greece. He's described as looking like the back-end of a bulldog, and it wouldn't be much of a stretch to say his life goal is "cure all diseases on planet earth". ComicBook/WerewolfByNight is a leather-clad, [[BadassBiker motorcycle-riding]] [[TheCasanova ladies' man]] from California who loves alcohol. He's handsome to the point of being a ChickMagnet, and his fantasies involve surfing and "a couple thousand beach babes". There's also [[IntergenerationalFriendship about 20 years between them]]. The two started out as doctor and patient, and over the years grow to be best friends.
** During the advent of ''ComicBook/NewMutants'', [[{{Omniglot}} Cypher]] and [[LifeDrain Warlock]] become fast friends because Cypher was the only person who could communicate with Warlock when he first arrived on earth following his flight from his siredam.
** ''ComicBook/ThePunisher'': Oddly enough, Frank has one of these with [[ComicBook/SpiderMan the Rhino]], of all people. The Rhino mainly lets himself get hired out as muscle and is actually pretty friendly once you get to know him. He can actually talk Frank out of killing people by showing him they've turned over a new leaf or are simply stupid, not criminals. Then they'll sit on a roof together and drink hot chocolate. It helps that the Rhino is not the drug-dealing mobster or psycho rapist who Frank usually targets, and Frank knows he doesn't have anything in his arsenal that can even scratch the Rhino, so there's no point in bothering. Frank does, however, get extremely exasperated with him sometimes.
** ''ComicBook/ThePunisherPresentsBarracuda'' reveals that the titular Barracuda has one of these with DirtyCop Sheriff Danby. The thing is, Danby is a PoliticallyIncorrectVillain and 'Cuda is a ScaryBlackMan.
** ''ComicBook/SpiderMan'':
*** The short-lived (2-issue) team-up of Spider-Man and [[ComicBook/TheMightyThor Loki]] in ''ComicBook/TheAmazingSpiderManJMichaelStraczynski'' went a lot like this. Loki wants to save one of his mortal offspring from the Chaos Sorceress possessing her. Spider-Man wants to save the world from that sorceress (and get her to stop hitting on him). They work together. Awesomeness ensues. On Loki's end, complaining that Spider-Man isn't giving him enough respect as a god and wondering why mortals are all so weird. On Spider-Man's, wondering what working with a mostly-evil guy like Loki means and buying chili dogs to share with Loki. Plus, at the end, Loki decided he owed Spidey one, and gave him a sort of talisman that he can cash in for that favor. Even though no one brought it up again for a long time (again, it ''was'' only 2 issues), fans hoped it could be a possible ChekhovsGun to undo ''ComicBook/OneMoreDay'' or something. Loki later on tricked Spidey into using his favor to save a random civilian, however.
*** Spider-Man and the Human Torch: two {{kid hero}}es who started their superhero careers at roughly around the same time (the ComicBook/FantasticFour are almost always depicted as the first heroes on the scene in the "modern Marvel universe") but grew up with two completely different lifestyles. Spidey was always on the 'barely scraping by' side financially while Johnny enjoyed the riches and fame that came with being a publicly beloved hero. Then there's their personalities: while Peter is more of a HumbleHero, Johnny is more or less a showoff. Yet, they are arguably the closet superhero friends next to ComicBook/LukeCage and ComicBook/IronFist, and consider each other family.
** ''ComicBook/UltimateXMen'': The X-Men and the Brotherhood are bitter enemies: the Brotherhood wants to kill or enslave the human race, and the X-Men to stop the Brotherhood and have pacific relations between humans and mutants. Toad is a member of the Brotherhood, and Cyclops of the X-Men. Somehow, they manage to be friends.
** ComicBook/{{Wolverine}} and everybody:
*** Nightcrawler is a particularly prominent example. In the Claremont run where both characters first appeared, they were together almost all the time. Nightcrawler is one of the few people Wolverine has said a genuine "[[PlatonicDeclarationOfLove I love you]]" to, possibly the only ''man.''
*** There is also a tendency for Wolverine to be paired up with teenaged girl side-kicks. The general idea is to play a gruff outsider gets hit with fatherly instinct sort of angle, but he does it over and over again! Specifically Logan has formed a duo with Kitty Pryde, Jubilee, and a young Rogue ([[Film/XMenFilmSeries in the movies]]). Later on, he's mentored ComicBook/{{X 23}}, his OppositeSexClone (okay, so perhaps that friendship is not so odd).
*** Wolverine was previously very close with Piotr Rasputin (Colossus), but after "Peter" suddenly and callously broke up with Kitty, their relationship was never the same again. This was cemented by Colossus' later defection to Magneto's Acolytes.
* In the ''ComicBook/DisneyDucksComicUniverse'', Scrooge has two main love interests, Goldie O'Gild and Brigitta [=McBridge=]. One would think they'd hate each other if they ever met... Except not only they've known each other almost the entire time, they're very close friends and consider each other the only other woman they'd tolerate with Scrooge, with Goldie even trusting Brigitta with being a secondary guardian to her granddaughter Dickie.
* ''ComicBook/JanJansEnDeKinderen'': The family dog and cats have an InterSpeciesFriendship.
* From ''ComicBook/LenoreTheCuteLittleDeadGirl'', we have one of the most extreme cases of IntergenerationalFriendship: Lenore, an [[CloudCuckoolander imaginative]], ChaoticStupid, 10-years-old, dead girl and Ragamuffin, a {{deadpan|Snarker}}, [[OnlySaneMan level-headed]], {{magnificent|Bastard}} vampire, [[SealedEvilInACan trapped in a cotton doll]].
* In Creator/RaymondBriggs' ''ComicBook/TheMan'', a young boy forms an unusual friendship with a tiny (and bossy and demanding) man.
* Victor Von Piro and Frank Einstein Jr. from ''ComicBook/MiniMonsters''. They're exactly polar opposites, and they're always arguing and criticizing the other's behaviors -- but they can't live without each other. In short, they are a male and monster version of BettyAndVeronica but without the LoveTriangle.
* ''ComicBook/Revolution2016'' and ''ComicBook/{{Revolutionaries}}'' give us the long-winded HumongousMecha Kup and the young, cheerful, [[PungeonMaster pun-loving]] British secret agent Action Man, who get along amazingly. Go figure.
* In ''ComicBook/SexCriminals'', in middle school, Suzie was a 'good girl' and Rachel was a 'dirty girl', with Rachel even disparagingly calling Suzie "slut" on at least one occasion. Sixteen years later, they're roommates.
* ''ComicBook/TheTransformersMoreThanMeetsTheEye'':
** Dorky, nerdy, fish-out-of-water Nautica and the truly insane MadScientist Brainstorm bond over SCIENCE.
** Whirl and Cyclonus spend most of the earlier issues cheerfully attempting to contrive each others' deaths. [[FireForgedFriends They bond while fighting Legislators]] in the "Remain in Light" arc, regularly fight side-by-side from there, and by the later parts of the second "season", Cyclonus actively seeks out Whirl for ''relationship advice'', of all things. It also helps that Whirl [[BrutalHonesty has all the tact of a brick thrown through a window]], which the kind of counsel Cyclonus urgently needs as he has NoSocialSkills and as a result he knows he can't trust the skewed perspectives he'd get from anyone else.
* In Polish comic ''ComicBook/TytusRomekIAtomek'', we have two of the main characters, Romek and A'Tomek. The first is a tall, handsome {{jerkass}} and a SmugSnake, while the other is short, fat and nerdy. In every other reality Romek would be the bully who picks on A'tomek. Here not only they are very good friends but Romek has plenty of respect for A'Tomek's superior intellect and considers him the authority figure.
* In ''ComicBook/{{Watchmen}}'', Rorschach is a broke, [[BlackAndWhiteInsanity insane]], psychopathic vigilante, the only one operating after the [[SuperRegistrationAct Keene Act]] has passed. His best friend Dan Dreiberg, the Nite Owl II, retired after the Keene Act and kind of half [[BecomingTheMask became the mask]] to his SecretIdentity. He's friendly to the point of being a doormat (look at when he invites Laurie to stay with him and she keeps talking over him.) Even in appearance, they are opposites, Dan being tall, plump, brown-haired, and when he takes his glasses off, handsome, whereas Rorschach is incredibly short, skinny, red-haired, and is "fascinatingly ugly".
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Fairy Tales]]
* "Literature/{{Reygoch}}" has small, clever and nosy fairy Curlylocks and huge, dumb and lazy giant Reygoch to befriend each other, even though the giant would rather keep counting stones in his ghost city forever than to be dragged by the maverick fairy into another bothersome adventure.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Films -- Animation]]
* Fievel and Tiger in ''WesternAnimation/AnAmericanTail'' become friends despite being a mouse and a cat respectively, and then sing a song about it.
* ''WesternAnimation/TheFoxAndTheHound'' uses this for its entire premise. The theatrical release poster even reads "A story of two friends who didn't know they were supposed to be enemies."
* A French stage magician and a young Scottish girl in ''WesternAnimation/TheIllusionist2010''.
* In ''WesternAnimation/TheLandBeforeTime'', we have a soft-spoken diplodocid (exact species unknown), a hot-headed ''Triceratops'', a happy-go lucky ''Saurolophus'', a panicky ''Pteranodon'', and a mute, gluttonous ''Stegosaurus'' somehow making a cohesive and tight-knit group. It gets even more bizarre when a friendly ''Tyrannosaurus'' and a whimsical ''Oviraptor'' get added to the crew.
* ''WesternAnimation/ThePrincessAndTheFrog'' has Tiana, a workaholic waitress who comes from a poor black family. Her best friend Charlotte on the other hand is a loud, ditzy, and overdramatic dreamer who is rich and therefore, SpoiledSweet. Despite this, the two have been best friends since childhood and it shows! They may have one of the healthiest friendship dynamics in any Disney film.
* In ''WesternAnimation/TurningRed'' Priya and Abby have opposite personalities. Priya is very stoic while Abby is very excitable.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Films -- Live-Action]]
* ''Film/TwoHeadedSharkAttack'': BrainlessBeauty Liza and AcademicAlphaBitch Lyndsey constantly hang out together and there is no friction between them.
* ''Film/TwelveToTheMoon'' (notable for its appearance on [[Series/MysteryScienceTheater3000 MST3K]]) features a friendship between a Holocaust survivor and the shame-ridden son of a Nazi. The two overcome their tension [[spoiler: just in time to die together in a HeroicSacrifice]].
* ''Film/TheAdventuresOfMiloAndOtis'' is about a Domestic Shorthair kitten and a Pug puppy who become friends, and then get separated and [[IWillFindYou spend most of the movie trying to be reunited.]]
* Marty and Doc in the ''Franchise/BackToTheFuture'' trilogy are as close as an old scientist and a teenager can be. We're never given an explanation as to when and how the two met and became friends... they simply are and that's that. The actors have good enough chemistry that most audiences never find themselves questioning it.
* ''Film/BillAndTedsExcellentAdventure'': Of the historical figures brought together by Bill and Ted, the ones who get the most focus as friends are, oddly enough, Socrates and Billy the Kid.
* ''Film/{{Bubble}}'': Martha is about twenty years older than Kyle, but describes him as her "best friend." They seem to share nothing in common and exchange only banal small talk when they're together. They're just two lonely coworkers with no one else in their lives.
%%* The main characters in ''Film/{{Delirious}}''.
* ''Film/DropDeadGorgeous'': A couple of lines suggest that Amber, a tap dancer and beautician at the mortuary, is friends with athlete and GunNut Tammy Curry. For that matter, with the exception of Becky, all of the girls in the pageant seem to get along well with each other despite their differing personalities and interests.
* ''Film/EscapeFromAlcatraz'': Morris and English. A white convict and escape artist and the jaded leader of the black gang in the 1960s Alcatraz prison quickly see eye to eye, becoming unlikely friends.
* ''Film/GranTorino'' is about a growing relationship between a racist and bitter Korean war veteran and the young Hmong man who tried to steal his car. The Hmong kid goes from washing the man's car, to being allowed to use it on a date [[spoiler: to receiving it after he dies protecting them from their vicious gangster cousin.]]
* ''Film/TheHalfOfIt'' has an interesting variation by way of a LoveTriangle. Ellie is a shy, introverted academic overachiever. Paul is a popular jock. But they've both never left their small town, are genuinely nice people, and have crushes on the same girl.
* Arthur and Iris in ''Film/TheHoliday'' are a combination of this trope and IntergenerationalFriendship.
* Baloo and Bagheera in ''Film/TheJungleBook2016''. Both appear to know each other from some earlier time but their personalities clash. Baloo is easy-going and charming while Bagheera is rule-abiding and reserved. Initially Bagheera disliked the bear, but he gradually warms up to Baloo when he sees that Baloo's affection for Mowgli is genuine.
* ''Film/KingRalph'': King Ralph, an oafish but likeable working-class American who became King of the United Kingdom when everyone ahead of him (he is the illegitimate son of a Royal Duke) dies, strikes up a close friendship with the intensely aristocratic and refined King Mulambon of Zambesi. They bond over being relatively new to the throne and sick of court protocol, and eventually ditch their crowns and minders and nip off to the pub for a couple of pints and a private bullshitting session. [[spoiler: This little piece of impromptu diplomacy eventually secures a highly lucrative trade agreement, creating thousands of jobs in Britain and securing Ralph's popularity.]]
* Joe Buck and Enrico "Ratso" Rizzo in ''Film/MidnightCowboy''. Joe is a naive, handsome, friendly (but cocky) Texan. Ratso is a seedy, sickly and cynical petty crook from the Bronx. At their first meeting, Ratso cons Joe out of $20 (a significant sum in the late 1960s), but they wind up being one another's best (and only) friends.
* Franchise/MarvelCinematicUniverse:
** ''Film/{{The Avengers|2012}}'' has pretty much every pairing except Black Widow and Hawkeye. But one that stands out in particular is brash, showy, attention-seeking hands-on man Tony and introverted, tormented theoreticist Bruce. Helps that they both [[TechnoBabble "speak English"]].
** Like in the comics, this was also deconstructed with Tony Stark and Steve Rogers where, in spite of their glaring differences they ''did'' share a strong friendship until their differences began to sour it more and more. It came to a head when Tony found out the man Steve was protecting murdered his parents, ending in a savage fight and some hate-filled final words from Tony:
---> "That shield doesn't belong to you. You don't deserve it. ''It was made by my father''.
*** Which receive a touching call–back [[spoiler:after the Odd Friendship is restored in ''Film/AvengersEndgame''.]]
----> [[spoiler:"He made it for you."]]
** ''Film/CaptainAmericaTheWinterSoldier'' has TheCape Steve and [[DarkAndTroubledPast former]] [[PragmaticHero KGB agent]] Natasha.
** Jane Foster and Darcy Lewis in ''Film/{{Thor}}'', who have quite different personalities but work together.
** ''Film/GuardiansOfTheGalaxy2014'' has Rocket, an [[TheNapoleon ill-tempered]] [[MoreDakka gun-loving]] [[UpliftedAnimal cybernetically-enhanced]] raccoon, and his best friend Groot, an [[GentleGiant amiable]] [[{{Cloudcuckoolander}} absent-minded]] tree-creature.
* The angry goth-girl and stuffy businessman protagonists of ''Film/MyFirstMister''.
* ''Film/StVincent2014'' has a cantankerous, disheveled, alcoholic veteran, and a shy, scared kid in the midst of trying to deal with his parent's divorce.
* Bruno, a drug dealer, and Alexandre, a pediatrician, in ''Film/TellNoOne''. They've become friends of a sort because [[BecauseYouWereNiceToMe Alexandre was the only one who believed Bruno's son was a hemophiliac]] (everyone else thought Bruno was abusing his son), and Bruno is the one Alexandre turns to [[ClearMyName when he's accused of murder]].
* Henry and George from ''Film/TwiceRoundTheDaffodils'' are (seemingly) at the opposite ends of the intelligence spectrum, yet seem to enjoy spending time together, whether it be playing TabletopGame/{{Chess}} or cooking together.
* ''Film/TheWayWayBack'': Duncan the introvert and Owen the extrovert (who also happens to be tens of years older than Duncan.)
* ''Film/WonderWoman2017'': Both Chief, a displaced Native American, and Diana, a displaced Amazon, share a kinship due to their backgrounds.
* ''Film/WrestlingErnestHemingway'': Frank (Creator/RichardHarris) is a foul-mouthed, rambunctious, womanizing retired Irish sailor. Walter (Creator/RobertDuvall) is a quiet, polite, and shy retired Cuban barber. The only thing they have in common is the boredom and loneliness of life as retirees with no family (Walter) and a family who wants nothing to do with him (Frank). They nevertheless become best friends and almost inseparable HeterosexualLifePartners.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Pro Wrestling]]
* The real life arrogant, boisterous pro wrestling master Wrestling/KarlGotch was close friends with the polite, ascetic Japanese judoka Wrestling/MasahikoKimura. Fortunately they never fought a match or two, because the earth would have trembled during its course.
* One of the most popular {{tag team}}s in WWF/WWE history was the Rock 'n' Sock Connection which consisted of [[Wrestling/DwayneJohnson The Rock]] and [[Wrestling/MickFoley Mick "Mankind" Foley]]. The former was a hip, electrifying, good-looking young man with a bit of a bullying streak. The latter was an overweight, scraggly dork who took every opportunity to look "uncool" as possible (to the point of using a dirty sock as a puppet named Socko, hence the "Sock" part of the team name). Despite their very obvious differences (which included a very, VERY vicious feud earlier in the year), their chemistry as both a tag team and a comedy duo was undeniable and led to THE most highly rated segment in Wrestling/WWERaw history. The Rock originally had a tolerable disdain but grew to respect and like Mick as time went on. Though the actual team-up was relatively short-lived, the two have since become kayfabe best friends. In fact, the first time the Rock returned to the ring after his semi-retirement in 2003 was to come to the aid of Mick against Evolution.
* The friendship between Wrestling/{{WCW}} {{Professional Wrestl|ing}}ers Wrestling/{{Sting}} and Wrestling/LexLuger was often portrayed this way, as Sting was a {{Face}} and Luger was (more often than not) a {{Heel}}.
* The stoic, soft spoken, respectful, always serious "World Warrior" Wrestling/LowKi and the loud, vicious, obnoxious and fun loving "Notorious 187" [[Wrestling/NelsonErazo Homicide]] are the best of buds. This may stem from Homicide being one of Low Ki's trainers but that begs the question of ''just how'' Low Ki turned out the way he did, as most of Homicide's other students are much more in line with his personality, with the exception of Rycklon, and none are as close to him as Ki.
** Also, "Kaval", who was essentially Low Ki in all but name and his NXT mentors Wrestling/LayCool, a pair of mean spirited, shallow, self absorbed airheads. They didn't treat Kaval with much respect but that's just how they are, they did genuinely like him and he reciprocated. A lot of fans don't like that Kaval and [=LayCool=] were paired up but the man himself enjoyed working with them (even if he didn't like being on NXT).
* The team of Wrestling/BookerT and Wrestling/{{Goldust}} (also known as "[=BookDust=]") was this in spades throughout 2002 to 2003, with Booker as a [[JerkAss brash, short-tempered, and cocky]] {{heel}}, and Goldust as a [[HoYay perverse, bizarre, and persuasive]] {{face}}. Upon meeting for the first time, Booker couldn't stand being near Goldust, but the duo eventually clicked once Booker begun his feud with the [[Wrestling/NewWorldOrder nWo]]. After some initial skepticism, Booker eventually warmed up to Goldust, and both of them were featured in many comedic backstage segments where they both dressed up in silly outfits or parodied other wrestlers. The team broke up after losing a match with that as a stipulation, but from time-to-time (depending on if Goldust is with WWE or not) there's usually one segment that reminisces about the tag team whenever Booker and Goldust are in the same room or in the ring at the same time.
* Wrestling/{{Chikara}}'s ACCC, a tag team made up of ArikCannon, an anarchist, and Wrestling/ClaudioCastagnoli, a rich Swiss banker swelling with national pride. They were the foundation for Wrestling/TheKingsOfWrestling, formed when they met up with he of the messianic delusions Wrestling/ChrisHero.
* Wrestling/ElPatronAlberto and Sucio Dutch Mantel in WWC, given both men had been open in their disdain for each other's first language before they started working together and what exactly they had in common, besides disliking Puerto Rico, was a mystery.
* Wrestling/{{Progress Wrestling}} has Pastor William Eaver and Chuck Mambo, as Eaver is a serious priest and Mumbo is a smiling {{surfer dude}}. They’ve proven to be a successful and popular tag team though, known as Sweet Jesus.
* Wrestling/{{Kane}} and [[Wrestling/BryanDanielson Daniel Bryan]] were forced into a TagTeam called Wrestling/TeamHellNo as part of [[ItMakesSenseInContext an elaborate form of anger management]], and they were quite the odd couple: a quiet, [[WrestlingMonster imposing monster of a man with demonic origins]] mixed in with a passionate anti-establishment [[GranolaGirl Granola Guy]] (and somehow, it was ''the monster'' who was the StraightMan). The two developed [[FireForgedFriends an initially tenuous, yet increasingly respectful working dynamic]], whose unique comedic and in-ring chemistry has resulted in the duo periodically reuniting for years even after their official disbandment in 2013.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Roleplay]]
* Jack Raven and Michael Freeman from ''Roleplay/BehindTheVeil''. The former is an ex-assassin who hunts evil to make up for his own sins, while the latter is an ex-fire fighter who hunts evil to protect people. Despite first meeting only to defeat a monster, the two stuck together and became best friends.
* ''Roleplay/CityOfChains'', a ''VideoGame/DragonAgeII'' PlayByPost:
** It offers us Ithilian, a BloodKnight Dalish elf who hates humans, and Amalia, a human agent of the [[ProudWarriorRace Qunari]] raised to believe that other societies are fundamentally corrupt and backwards. It works about as well as you'd think at first, but they [[FireForgedFriends get over it]], and the result is consistent badassery.
** The same story also includes Rilien, a ''Tranquil,'' and his friendships with silly rogue [[SnarkToSnarkCombat Ashton]] and flighty, emotional [[OppositesAttract Sparrow]].
* ''Roleplay/DawnOfANewAgeOldportBlues'':
** Zia is energetic, rowdy, and sexually active. Her closest friends include the sweet and demure Mirielle (who she met due to their mothers being friends), the gentle and straight-laced Ciro (who she protected from bullies in their childhood) and the quiet and thoughtful Ivan (with whom [[CommonalityConnection she shares]] a love of musicals).
** Ivy is a shy and neurotic ShrinkingViolet. Her best friend, Luna, is abrasive and confrontational. They became close due to a shared love of anime and video games, and have recently reconciled after Luna's personality developed drastically.
** Lenore and Vivian couldn't be more different -- the former being a laid-back extrovert while the latter is an awkward NervousWreck -- but the two of them are nevertheless thick as thieves.
** As {{lampshaded}} by the other characters, Jae's surly disposition is very at odds with Jemimah's cheerful boisterousness. They met by accident and Jae enjoyed having someone she could casually shoot the breeze with. It helps that they have a mutual friend in Marko, Jae's fellow gang member and Jemimah's workout buddy.
* A number of ''Roleplay/SurvivalOfTheFittest'' examples, including Adam Dodd and Julie Mikan, as well as Sean O'Cann and Trish [=McCarroll=]. Both friendships are highly circumstantial, however.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Tabletop Games]]
* ''TabletopGame/BattleTech'' has the unusual relationship between Kanrei (later Coordinator) Theodore Kurita and Comstar's Precentor Martial Anastasius Focht. One would imagine that the most they would have in common would be their leadership over vast armies as the well-known Theodore commands the armed forces of the militaristic Draconis Combine while Focht a virtual unknown who leads the military arm of the ostensibly neutral Comstar. Yet the two share an odd bond with each other; third parties describe the interactions as layered and nuanced, with unstated but deep respect. [[spoiler:It both makes more sense and gets ''weirder'' when you learn that Focht is really Frederick Steiner, once upon a time a bitter enemy of House Kurita and battlefield rival to Theodore himself. Frederick's bravery on the battlefield and consideration for his men earns Theodore's respect, as he in turn has been trying to reform the Draconis Combine armed forces to stop wasting lives on useless gestures in battle such as never retreating even though a battle is clearly lost. Yes, Theodore personally shot Frederick's eye out, but ultimately it wasn't personal and both men acknowledge it]].
* ''TabletopGame/ForgottenRealms'': The gods Lathander the Morninglord and Kelemvor the Judge of the Dead have very different outlooks on the world and portfolios, but maintain an alliance based on their mutual hatred of {{necromanc|er}}y and the undead.
* ''TabletopGame/{{Pathfinder}}'':
** Nivi Rhombodazzle, the gnome goddess of chance, gamblers and roving wanderers, maintains a good relationship with Torag, the duty-bound god of the dwarves. The two have radically different personalities and outlooks, but they and their followers still get along well; generally, Torag sees Nivi as good-hearted and well-meaning, if perhaps not the most reliable person in the world, while Nivi sees Torag as stuffy and dour but still decent and trustworthy.
** The [[OurMermaidsAreDifferent merfolk]] are extremely xenophobic and viciously repel trespassers near their [[HiddenElfVillage secret settlements]], but maintain a working relationship with the ''aboleths'' -- the mind-controlling psionic LovecraftLite monsters that predate the gods and otherwise scorn all "lesser" forms of life.
** Erastil, god of hunting, agriculture and rural communities, is good friends with Shelyn, goddess of beauty, love, and the fine arts. Though a significantly more martially-oriented god than Shelyn, Erastil appreciates Shelyn's support for marriage and families (he is himself married to a minor agriculture goddess), and Shelyn often asks him to take her on sightseeing trips through the multiverse to find places of great natural beauty.
* ''TabletopGame/MagicTheGathering'': The gods of the Greek-inspired plane of Theros rarely get along, but there is a surprising friendship between Thassa, goddess of the sea, and Purphoros, god of the forge and fire; the normally paranoid and mistrustful Thassa feels comfortable opening up to Purphoros, because she knows he can't possible threaten her domain (water extinguishes fire after all) while Purphoros just likes having someone who appreciates the things he makes for them.
* ''TabletopGame/Warhammer40000'': Among the primarchs, demigod children of the God-Emperor, Magnus and Jaghatai Khan were good friends, which was pretty rare among the universe's biggest DysfunctionalFamily. Magnus is a SorcerousOverlord and Jaghatai is a BadassBiker, but they both did not revel in warfare as much as their other brothers did. They enjoyed reading the literature and knowledge of the planets they brought into the Imperium, learning of history and strategy, and supported careful use of Warp magic among their legions. It basically came down to them both being a pair of {{Cultured Badass}}es.
** Likewise, Fulgrim and Ferrus Manus were as close as any two Primarchs could be; Fulgrim was artistic, flamboyant, and appreciated leisure, while Ferrus was rough, blunt, and believed in strength above all. They initially ''seem'' like polar opposites, but when you get under the surface you see they both want to pursue their own personal definition of perfection and self-improvement and for humanity as a whole to achieve the same. They didn't mind that the other had a different idea of what perfection looked like.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Visual Novels]]
* Kiyotaka Ishimaru and Mondo Oowada from ''VisualNovel/DanganronpaTriggerHappyHavoc''. One is a school hall monitor who values school discipline and students' morals above all else, the other is a [[JapaneseDelinquents delinquent]] who happens to be the leader of the largest motorcycle gang in all of Japan. Despite this, they become close friends due to their mutual passion of being HotBlooded. [[spoiler:When he is revealed as the murderer in Chapter 2, Ishimaru [[BrokenPedestal refuses to believe that Oowada killed Chihiro]], but then he is confronted with the truth and has a HeroicBSOD after that.]] Seeing that Ishimaru sees Oowada as his OnlyFriend, this is justified: he was so focused on his school's morals and rules and encouraging them to study hard, he never had any friends, ''even'' from his group of classmates, until Oowada came along. [[spoiler:And when Oowada was executed, he felt like he lost his brother]].
** To a lesser (meaning less odd) extent Aoi Asahina and Sakura Oogami. The two ALWAYS spend time together, bonding over their love of sports, but Hina is more friendly and approachable while Sakura is more... TheQuietOne who has trouble making friends and who's muscular appearance has had many guys including Yasuhiro Hagakure, and Ishimaru, unintentionallly calling her a guy (though in Hagakure's case he calls her "Ogre" non-maliciously) This leads to [[spoiler: the events of Chapter 4, where Sakura commits Suicide to stop being TheMole for Monokuma in his attempt to get the Ultimates to turn against each other. Hina decides to frame every other survivor due to her feeling nobody respected Sakura like she did. When she is caught and finds out Sakura didn't want her to blame the others for her suicide, she breaks down.]]
** The sequel ''VisualNovel/Danganronpa2GoodbyeDespair'' also has a few.
*** Hajime Hinata and Nagito Komaeda. [[spoiler: TheGenericGuy Hero, and PsychoSupporter, unhinged, Hope Fanatic. Even when Komaeda pretends to hate Hajime, he can't bring himself to do it alone with him saying they are both stepping stones for Hope.]]
*** Regal Princess Sonia Nevermind and IneffectualLoner, LargeHam Gundham Tanaka bond over their love of Gundham's hamsters (his [[DeathbringerTheAdorable Four Dark Devas of Destruction]]) and while Sonia is creeped out by Kazuichi Soda's advances on her, she's happy to compliment Gundham on his intelligence and quick thinking. Also counts as StarCrossedLovers because [[spoiler: Gundham is revealed to be Nekomaru Nidai's killer, Sonia is extremely defiant and breaks down after he is executed. She even takes care of his Four Dark Devas of Destruction for him.]]
* ''VisualNovel/DaughterForDessert'' gives Lily and Moe Mortelli. Lily apparently doesn’t care if Mortelli says anything inappropriate or even racist towards her.
* ''VisualNovel/DoubleHomework'':
** The protagonist and Henry. The protagonist himself lampshades this at times by asking himself why he’s friends with such an idiot.
** Morgan and Amy. Amy lampshades this, saying that Morgan likes books and movies, where the good guys usually win, while Amy herself prefers video games, where the outcome is unclear and based on the skill and choices of the player(s).
* ''VisualNovel/ShinraiBrokenBeyondDespair''
** Raiko, who's stoic and aloof, is friends with the friendly and outgoing Nobara, although it's later revealed that Raiko wasn't always as serious and emotionally detached as she is at the start of the game.
** Rie, an outspoken and SecretlyWealthy tomboy is best friends with Runa, a polite girl who's [[PennyAmongDiamonds the only party attendee whose family lives in poverty.]]
** Taiko, a well-mannered boy with a strong sense of justice, is friends with notorious pervert Kotoba.
* Akira and Seiji from ''VisualNovel/SpiritHunterNG''. While they're riding together on his bike, Akira acknowledges that, despite being best friends, he and Seiji are complete opposites -- Seiji is a polite, sociable boy who [[BitchInSheepsClothing hides a dark personality]], whilst Akira appears intimidating but would rather be left alone. Even their clothes contrast, with Akira favouring black while Seiji wears white.
* ''VisualNovel/{{Tsukihime}}'':
** Arcueid and Ciel are described in canon as having a "weird friendship". One is a vampire. The other is a vampire killer. They also have a bit of a love triangle over [[TheUnwantedHarem poor Shiki, who only attracts the insane.]]
** ''VideoGame/MeltyBlood'' has the Back Alley Alliance, starting with Satsuki Yumizuka (normal girl who got turned into a vampire but won big in the SuperpowerLottery by becoming a fast-adjusted UnskilledButStrong Dead Apostle) and Sion Eltnam Atlasia (brilliant mage whose modus operendi is AwesomenessByAnalysis and seeking a cure for vampirism, [[VampireRefugee thanks to her own affliction]] from fighting the Night of Wallachia). Sometimes Len (CuteMute cat dream familiar) hangs around. ''Actress Again'' brings in Riesbyfe Stridberg (Church Executor who fought the Night of Wallachia alongside Sion [[spoiler:and died in that battle -- the being that exists in the present day as Riesbyfe is a recreated copy]]) who is a very close friend of Sion (mages and the Church do not usually get along).
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Web Animation]]
* WebAnimation/DevilArtemis's videos pair up [[Anime/DragonBallZ Cell]] and [[Franchise/TheMuppets Kermit the Frog]]. A murderous bio-android and a Muppet are not what you'd normally think when you think "best friends".
* ''WebAnimation/{{Dreamscape}}'': Dylan, the idealistic NiceGuy, and Keela, the stoic EmotionlessGirl. However, it turns out they aren't that different.
* ''WebAnimation/DSBTInsaniT'': Alex, the AmbiguouslyEvil HeroicComedicSociopath of the group, and Koden, the NiceGuy OnlySaneMan of the group.
* ''WebAnimation/HappyTreeFriends'': Flaky, a [[ProperlyParanoid timid panophobe]] is friends with Cuddles, a thrill-seeking daredevil.
* ''WebAnimation/RedVsBlue'':
** Flashbacks during the Project Freelancer saga show that agents Maine, Carolina, and Washington all worked well together and were apparently best friends. Despite their vastly different personalities with Maine being the BigGuy and a bit of a SoreLoser, Carolina TheAce and CompetitionFreak, and Washington as a JackOfAllStats and NiceGuy they all have each others backs and perform well. You would never guess they had this friendship based on how they are in the present day, though Carolina and Wash have patched things up thanks to their interactions with the Reds and Blues.
** Season 16, "The Shisno Paradox", has one between Grif, the bitter LazyBum, and Huggins, an [[GenkiGirl energetic and upbeat]] fairy-like light being.
* ''WebAnimation/{{RWBY}}'':
** During the initiation of the first-year students, Glynda expresses pity for the stoic, serious Ren being teamed up with energetic, crazy Nora because she cannot imagine how they could ever get along with each other. However, they were friends prior to entering Beacon Academy and are so close that other students think they're in a relationship; even their team-leader, Jaune, makes that mistake until corrected. It's later confirmed that their friendship started long ago in childhood when they were the sole survivors of a village that had been destroyed by Grimm. For most of their lives they had no-one to rely on but each other, and it made them inseparable.
** Blake is first introduced robbing a train owned by Weiss's family, whose company uses her people, the [[LittleBitBeastly Faunus]], as slave labor. However, the two girls learn how to put their differences aside when they're put on the same team, and eventually bond as true friends. When Team RWBY try to reach Atlas from the city of Argus, the Atlesian commander of the port is willing to let Weiss Schnee through because of her family connections, but upon seeing a Faunus with her makes it clear that she believes Weiss has fallen in with very questionable company, and will not let them through. Weiss is the first one to leap to Blake's defence.
* ''WebAnimation/{{Shrapnel}}'': Juka has one with basically everyone she is on good terms with, seeing as she is a giant EldritchAbomination who easily dwarfs everyone else, and could (and sometimes does) easily kill people, and could easily crush them to a bloody paste if she wanted to, and has no obligation to be as nice as she often is.
* Just about everyone in the modern main cast of ''[[WebAnimation/Supermarioglitchy4sSuperMario64Bloopers SMG4]]'' could count, but the clearest example is Mario and Meggy Spletzer. Mario is a selfish lazy dumbass while Meggy is a sporty GenkiGirl who's smart enough to attempt law school. They bonded over their shared love of MoreDakka, and Meggy eventually became Mario's MoralityChain (at times literally if Meggy has to tie him up to keep him from destroying something), kickstarting Mario's own CharacterDevelopment by making him less of a {{jerkass}} HeroicSociopath. Meggy remains one of a ''tiny'' number of people Mario cares about (the others are Luigi, [=SMG4=], plus sometimes Melony), and possibly the ''only'' one he listens to.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Webcomics]]
* ''Webcomic/BloodyUrban'' has [[MadScientist Libby Neon]] -- nihilist, ConspiracyTheorist, and hardcore vegetarian -- and her roommate [[UnfazedEveryman Angelica Pasternak]] -- a perpetually cheerful airhead with a serious love of bacon.
* ''Webcomic/BrawlInTheFamily'': Most of the positive character interactions can be chalked up to this, mostly via [[VillainProtagonist King Dedede]] and his tortured friendships with erstwhile enemies Kirby, Meta Knight, Bandana Dee, and Adeline.
** Daisy and Waluigi are also good friends. Daisy is a stable NiceGirl, while Waluigi is a loony {{Jerkass}}.
* ''Webcomic/CheckPlease'': In many works, the friendship between the CampGay Bitty and the [[FratBro Frat Bros]] of the Hockey Team might seem weird, but the Hockey Team is very open minded and all absolutely love and support Bitty, who goes on to achieve the status of TeamMom among the house. Early on, Bitty makes a comment lampshading that he has his doubts about the fraternity accepting him so easily, but this is mostly related to his still lingering fears of jocks due to his bullies.
* Quite a few examples appear in ''Webcomic/DeadWinter'' the ZombieApocalypse can really bring the most polar opposite of people together. Such as Monday and Lou, a gun-for-hire and a fat plumber, respectively. Then there's also Yuri and Philip, one's a [[BoisterousBruiser boisterous]] [[HuskyRusskie Russian]] gun-for-hire that prefers direct combat, while the other's a quiet [[BadassPreacher badass reverend]] whom prefers to [[FriendlySniper fight from afar]].
* All over the place in ''Webcomic/DumbingOfAge''. [[LoveMartyr Danny]] and [[TheCasanova Joe]] are a long-established pair. [[TheFundamentalist Joyce]] and [[TheSlacker Walky]] and Joyce and [[TheAlcoholic Billie]] are developing ones.
* In ''Webcomic/ElGoonishShive'', the StrawFeminist Susan and the ChivalrousPervert Tedd.
* In ''Webcomic/TheFuzzyFive'', room mates Britnee the perky blonde and Meredith the Goth.
* ''Webcomic/GirlGenius'': The Jaegermonsters are immortal soldiers created by the old Heterodynes, who used them to raid and pillage the countryside. Everyone in Europa hates them with a passion, or at the very least is afraid of them. The exception is the Corbettite monks, a religious order that runs a free train service everywhere they can. They get along great -- the Jaegers are happy to help evict unruly passengers, and are some of the only people who actually enjoy the infamous Corbettite train song.
* Both of the main friendships in ''Webcomic/GunnerkriggCourt'' are this:
** Annie and Kat are close friends despite being complete opposites personality-wise. They also metaphorically represent two opposing forces (the forest and etherical things for Annie / the court and technological things for Kat).
** Annie and Reynardine, who are, respectively, a quiet young girl and a fox god. Reynard has killed at least one human and a dragon via glitched {{Body Surf}}ing, and [[EpilepticTrees (may have)]] tried to kill Annie the same way, but this doesn't bother her much. Even the awkwardness of Reynard being in unrequited love with Annie's mother, along with the revelation that [[spoiler:Annie is basically her mother's reincarnation]], isn't enough to hurt their friendship more than temporarily.
** As if that's not enough, we now have Shadow 2 and Robot, who have no similarities other than being named by CaptainObvious. One is a shadow-man created by Coyote as a half-assed representation of humanity, and the other is a misbehaving robot who often receives severe sword injuries. They don't fight crime, but they ''are'' together.
* Amy and Metal Sonic in ''Webcomic/HanginOut'', if only because the latter kidnapped the former and tried to murder her friends in the main games. The webcomic opens with them [[TitleDrop hangin out]] and watching a movie.
* Finas and Casimiro of ''Webcomic/HannaIsNotABoysName'' are complete opposites in every way, yet the two have been practically inseparable for centuries.
** Veser and Ples may also be headed this way.
* In ''Webcomic/{{Harbourmaster}}'', when Partasah died, [[http://www.waywardmartian.com/harbourmaster1/002-020.html his daughter Gilou tried to force Tal, the governor Partasah chose, to abdicate in his favor.]] Instead, [[http://www.waywardmartian.com/harbourmaster1/002-021.html she ended up being hired as his assistant]] ... only to discover [[http://www.waywardmartian.com/harbourmaster2/012-004.html herself beginning to like him.]]
* ''Webcomic/{{Homestuck}}'' has TheFool John and [[ChronicBackstabbingDisorder Backstabber]] Vriska.
** Also [[TheBigGuy Equius]] and his [[PlatonicLifePartners moirail]] [[GenkiGirl Nepeta]]: he's serious, stubborn and obsessed with caste and dignity, while she's an RP-loving wildchild who hunts down vicious animals [[BadassAdorable with her bare claws.]] Despite their odd relationship, the two are clearly very close. When [[spoiler: Gamzee loses his marbles and turns homicidal, the first thing Equius does is [[PetTheDog make sure Nepeta is safe.]] ]]
* ''Webcomic/TheInexplicableAdventuresOfBob:'' Most of Bob's friendships qualify, since he's an incredibly ordinary-seeming guys who keeps company with space aliens, dragons, robots, and the like; but even his friendship with Rocko is unusual, Rocko being an enormous and scary-looking ex-con who is now spectacularly wealthy (and also a bald [[BigfootSasquatchAndYeti bigfoot]], though neither of them knew it when they met.
* ''Webcomic/LavenderTea'': Damian starts out in a competitive rivalry with Nina, slowly the two become friends over time. He also has a different outlook of life than Jasper yet the two remain close buddies for years.
* [[SociopathicHero Richard]] and [[TheCaptain Cale'Anon]] from ''Webcomic/LookingForGroup'', one is a sociopathic undead warlock who is probably only helping the heroes out of boredom, the other is an overly idealistic elven paladin who doesn't know he's supposed to be evil and does his best to be a FriendToAllLivingThings.
* In ''Webcomic/MKsTheStrangeCaseOfDrJekyllAndMrHyde'', Jekyll and Hyde are like two brothers who get on each other's nerves, but ultimately care about each other very much.
* ''Webcomic/{{Nebula}}'': Mercury is a SmallNameBigEgo who thinks that he's better than everyone else (except Sun) and who's always trying to order people around, to absolutely no effect. Sun is the quietly intimidating undisputed leader of the group, whose main problem is that he rarely interacts with ''anyone'' (except Mercury).
* In ''Webcomic/TheOrderOfTheStick'':
** Fellow {{Cloudcuckoolander}}s [[SpoonyBard Elan]] and [[DumbMuscle Thog]] get along famously, despite the latter being a ChaoticEvil CardCarryingVillain. [[spoiler:Thog's goodwill doesn't extend to Elan's friends.]]
** O-Chul {{the Paladin}} quickly befriends the ObliviouslyEvil Monster in the Darkness, [[spoiler:which saves his life and gives the Monster its first experience with genuine Good.]]
** The bonus comic ''Spoiler Alert'' reveals that Therkla and Sangwaan struck up a short one when Therkla attempted to rob her and Sangwaan [[BlindSeer foresaw it]]. Sangwaan instead invites her for drinks and they bond over their similar positions in life. [[spoiler:It ends up being their last interaction as the Hobgoblin Horde attacks the next day and Sangwaan is killed in the fighitng]].
* Obsessive-compulsive Hannelore and the hygiene-challenged Marigold from ''Webcomic/QuestionableContent''.
* ''Webcomic/SabrinaOnline'': Sabrina's hyper-sexual porn star boss Zig Zag and her ultraconservative mother Endora. They met at Sabrina's wedding and surprised each other by hitting it off.
* ''Webcomic/TheShufflers'': Märchen is a middle-aged cartomancer who’s fallen on hard times, trying to make money by carrying out fortune telling. Hiddenite is a young descendant of a line of powerful mages assumed to be a legend. After Hiddenite saves Märchen from being persecuted by local authorities, Märchen gets Hiddenite to agree to be his bodyguard in exchange for lodging. Over time, the two slowly form a deep and genuine friendship.
* Similarly to the Superego example mentioned above, Luke, a top-heavy guy who has inherited the sin of Wrath, is bonding with Pisces, a small girl who has inherited the sin of Sloth [[spoiler: or so it seems]] in ''Manhua/SinnersGame''. [[spoiler: Luke even asks her that, if they should be able to survive after the third game, if she could live in with him because they both have lost their relatives. She accepts]]. Notice that he asks her instead of the other way around!
** This goes even so far that although Pisces eventually tells Luke that [[spoiler: she has been acting like that to get on his good side]], he [[spoiler: [[TakingTheBullet intentionally saves her from being eliminated on the third game]]]] and when Pisces does get [[spoiler: eliminated on the fourth game, she sees a vision of him]]. This however does not count as [[spoiler: TogetherInDeath as the Detective finds out that the eliminated contestants are not dead, but kept as a HumanPopsicle]].
* Rabbit and Vinnie from the horror comic ''Webcomic/{{Skins}}''. Rabbit is a PrettyBoy vampire who treats life like a [[ManChild candystore]] and Vinnie is a [[ManlyMan hulking]] monosyllabic werewolf soldier who views it more as a barfight.
** Hell, even Jordan and Rabbit fit this trope. She's a driven [[TheAce workaholic psychic commander]] and Rabbit is...Rabbit. Yet they're best friends and [[spoiler: possibly also lovers.]]
* Kiki and Bun-Bun from ''Webcomic/SluggyFreelance''. Aside from both being {{Talking Animal}}s, they don't have much in common: one's a GenkiGirl with IncorruptiblePurePureness, the other's a KillerRabbit and SociopathicHero who is strictly apathetic towards just about everything. Despite this, Kiki considers Bun-Bun her best friend, and Bun-Bun hasn't killed Kiki (and in fact is unable to do it even when he gets pissed off), which is about as friendly as Bun-Bun gets with anyone.
* ''Webcomic/StandStillStaySilent'': Emil and Lalli are developing one of these, in spite of the fact that the only thing they have in common is a [[NoSocialSkills lack of social skills]]. Lalli, who speaks only Finnish, is a night scout with incredibly odd behavior, and whose magical abilities give him a distinctly odd perspective on life and the world. Emil is a [[ItsAllAboutMe self-absorbed]] SpoiledBrat and PyroManiac who only speaks Swedish and (like most Swedes) is a FlatEarthAtheist, at least initially. In spite of all this, Emil has taken it upon himslf to look out for Lalli (even though he very rarely needs it) and while his affections can be quite smothering, Lalli seems to appreciate the gesture.
* In ''Webcomic/{{Superego}}'', [[spoiler: Grey]] is quite surprised to find out [[ShrinkingViolet Cherry]] (who [[spoiler: has Avoidant Personality Disorder]]) and [[SmallNameBigEgo Rick]] (who [[spoiler: has Narcistic Personality Disorder]]) are bonding. He explains it with OppositesAttract.
* ''Webcomic/WeakHero'':
** Of all the main gang, the timid nerd Eugene is the first to befriend reformed bully Teddy- first because Teddy stepped in when Eugene was being attacked by another school, and then because they both looked after a homeless kitten.
** Teddy gets another odd friend in Rowan. Despite Teddy being a reclusive sadist-turned-good-guy, and Rowan being a boisterous exaggerator, the two end up hanging out a lot since they're in the same classroom.
** Seongmok and Dongha are opposites in almost every way; skinny and buff, loud and quiet, pale-skinned and tanned, provocative and reserved, effeminate and manly etc. It's because of this that they're so powerful as a team, complimenting and covering each other's weaknesses.
* ''Webcomic/WoodenPlankStudios'' has many, given their MassiveMultiplayerCrossover cast. But one stood out in [[Franchise/{{Pokemon}} Incineroar]] and [[Franchise/{{Tekken}} Kazuya]], who in their mission to revive the rest of the ''VideoGame/SuperSmashBrosUltimate'' cast, bond in a way that when they are submitted to the RelationshipValues of ''Franchise/FireEmblem'', [[https://www.woodenplankstudios.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/08/comic_2022_smashsupport_8.jpg they can't compliment each other enough]].
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Web Original]]
* {{Website/Cracked}} did [[http://www.cracked.com/article_18826_the-7-most-random-celebrity-duos-who-hung-out-before-fame.html an article about this very topic.]]
* ''[[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U4lz8MN6MQA DOOM Crossing: Eternal Horizons]]'' personifies this trope by having [[VideoGame/AnimalCrossingNewHorizons Isabelle]], the soft-spoken mayor's assistant, and the [[VideoGame/DoomEternal Doom Slayer]], a one-man-army demon-slaying warrior, being friends and hanging out with one-another in their respective games.
* It is even noted about Sasha Hunter and Iphigenie Leben in ''Literature/GreekNinja'' that the two are unlikely friends. You've got Sasha, the tall, cool, brooding and people-hating ninja hanging out with Iphigenie, the small, cute, cheerful philosophically-inclined thinker.
* Leave it to the Website/SCPFoundation for this trope to be PlayedForHorror. SCP-682, a reptilian OmnicidalManiac who reacts to anything not it with sheer murderous hatred, is actually docile with SCP-053, a 3 year-old seemingly-human girl who is also a living HatePlague: anyone who makes physical contact or direct eye contact with her or spends more than 10 minutes in her presence will try to kill her and kill anyone who gets in their way. While this friendship where 682 even allows 053 to scribble on its face is oddly sweet, this just makes the mystery of what the hell she really is that much more terrifying.
* In ''Literature/VoidDomain'', we have Eva, a fourteen year old girl who has dabbled in some magic that might not be socially acceptable in most respected circles. Before the story started, she struck up a friendship with Arachne, a psychopathic spider demon several times older than Eva.
* ''ARG/WelcomeHomeClownIllustrations'': Julie and Frank - respectively the cheeriest neighbor and a PerpetualFrowner - are described as being best friends.
* ''Literature/{{Worm}}'':
** Taylor Hebert and Rachel Lindt -- an intelligent and idealistic bullied teenager and a [[HairTriggerTemper violent]] BookDumb {{delinquent|s}}, respectively.
** There's also Imp -- a NominalHero teenaged girl in it for the thrills and violence and Vista, a younger girl who takes her heroing seriously.

* ''Series/TheCallOfWarr'': "Prisoner Sarah" somehow becomes close with Gravesite, despite being their prisoner, to the point where they happily agree to help him write their book.
* ''WebVideo/CreamHeroes'' has this between TT and Nana. TT is a tough, standoffish cat known for punching any cat who invades her personal space. Nana is a warm, loving cat who rubs around and snuggles up to whichever cat is nearest. Somehow the two have become incredibly close and will lie down together, groom one another -- and when TT cries during bathtime, Nana waits outside the bathroom door pacing with anxiety.
* Campaign 3 of ''WebVideo/CriticalRole'' has psychic NiceGirl Imogen, who's close friends with CreepyGood undead Laudna.
* The Clockwork Castle episode of the ''LetsPlay/MarioPartyTV'' series sparked the Running Gag of Toadette and [[Franchise/DonkeyKong DK]] being good buddies, due to how many times she got to catch him.
* Despite WebVideo/TheNostalgiaCritic's unhappiness with the Chick's stalking of WebVideo/ToddInTheShadows, the boys go for eyebrow waxings together.
* In ''WebVideo/SandersSides'' videos, Virgil and Patton. Virgil is a gloomy, cynical DeadpanSnarker, TheFriendNobodyLikes (at least at start), and literally ''the personification of anxiety''. Patton, meanwhile, is a cheerful, [[ThePollyanna endlessly optimistic]] NiceGuy who can make friends with just about anybody. Despite this, Virgil genuinely likes Patton and will even openly admit it (which is a ''big'' deal for him) -- partially because Patton [[BecauseYouWereNiceToMe is the only one that doesn't treat him like a nuisance]]. In the 2017 Christmas episode, Virgil even gives Patton a card that's signed "Best Friends," much to Patton's delight.
* From ''WebVideo/TheSonicAmigos'', VideoGame/ShadowTheHedgehog and [[Franchise/WinnieThePooh Tigger]].
* In the ''WebVideo/SuperMarioLogan'' series, Mario's friends include a stereotypical black thug dinosaur (Black Yoshi), an ogre obsessed with eating cheesecake and using the toilet (Franchise/{{Shrek}}), a cowboy obsessed with hunting shrimpos ([[Franchise/ToyStory Woody]]), and a Toad who wants to be a rap star.
* ''WebVideo/YouthAndConsequences'': School Queen Farrah and Social Outcast Colin have the closest friendship in the show, although they kept a secret from the rest of the school.
