13	The nosebleed is a visual shorthand/euphemism for sexual arousal. It is commonly interpreted that way for males and females, with little trickles of blood indicating mild arousal, and gushing fountains of blood indicating erection/extreme arousal in both sexes. It can also be interpreted as shorthand strictly for [[SomethingElseAlsoRises erections]] in males. 15	This happens in virtually every anime with {{fanservice}}. It also occasionally appears these days in western media -- especially Webcomics -- which are open about their manga influences. The concept comes from a Japanese old wives' tale, that (teens'?) arousal increases blood pressure so much that they get nosebleeds and might be TruthInTelevision[[note]]The nose (according to Website/TheOtherWiki) has erectile tissue in the form of turbinates or nasal conchae, one on each side. While the turbinates are designed to swell with blood to warm air inhaled through the nose, they're capable of bleeding due to blowing the nose too hard, or by excessively cold, dry air that dries the mucous membrane out. These can also become engorged during sexual arousal, such as [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sexually_induced_sneezing sexually induced sneezing]] which is far more common than outright nosebleeds. [[/note]] under ''very'' rare circumstances; UsefulNotes/AttilaTheHun might be the most famous victim of one in history, being found dead the morning after his wedding night having bled an "effusion of blood" despite no visible wound.

17	Such a nosebleed frequently results from a PantyShot. Compare VisualInnuendo, SomethingElseAlsoRises, and (the far more realistic) JizzedInMyPants. Contrast PsychicNosebleed, where the blood loss is caused by the strain of overusing PsychicPowers, and especially DeadlyNosebleed, which denotes serious physical injury. Both of these overlap with this more than you'd think; arousal could be considered just another way of overexerting yourself, after all. Peeping on naked girls may also result in a NasalTrauma nosebleed via a MegatonPunch to the face, [[DistractedByTheSexy or by slamming into an object after not taking eyes off of the eye candy]], but that's not part of this trope.
