->''[W]hen she turned, it was the burned face of Sandor Clegane looking down at her, his mouth twisted in a terrible mockery of a smile. "You are shaking, girl," he said, his voice rasping. "Do I frighten you so much?"\
He did, and had since she had first laid eyes on the ruin that fire had made of his face...''
-->-- ''Literature/AGameOfThrones''

The human face is supremely important on a social and biological level. Most of our non-verbal communication comes from reading subtle facial movements, and its importance in our cognitive thinking is best shown in our tendency to see faces in inanimate objects (think of how many times you've looked at a rock face and [[ThatCloudLooksLike thought you'd seen two eyes and a mouth]]). So there is something genuinely disturbing to most people about seeing a face visibly distorted, mutated, or rearranged ... so, naturally, this type of BodyHorror is one of the most common HorrorTropes.

A SisterTrope and effective primary component of NightmareFuel.

It is in fact at least OlderThanFeudalism -- armies over the world have based their war masks around this trope, and in {{mythology}} and folklore, just about any self-respecting demon or supernatural evil will have one.

More recently, it has also become a staple of SurrealHorror.

This is a main symptom of [[CameBackWrong Coming Back Wrong.]] Most humanoid examples of OurMonstersAreWeird will fit this trope.

This trope is commonly doubled with the JumpScare in a ScreamerPrank.

[[SubTrope Sub-Tropes]] include:
* BlackEyesOfCrazy: A character is shown to be evil by having black sclera.
* BlackEyesOfEvil: Evil characters' eyes are completely black.
* TheBlank: No facial features at all.
* CheshireCatGrin: An unusually wide, mischievous smile.
* CuteCreatureCreepyMouth: A cute creature has a horrifying mouth.
* EyelessFace: A face is devoid of eyes and eye sockets.
* FacialHorror: The face is disturbing because of scarring.
* GameFace: A character's face becomes frightening when they reveal their true self.
* GhostlyGape: The eyes and mouth are empty black pits.
* GlasgowGrin: A large grin created by slicing the cheeks.
* GlowingEyelightsOfUndeath: Undead beings have glowing eyes.
* MoreTeethThanTheOsmondFamily: A character's mouth is full of numerous sharp teeth.
* RedEyesTakeWarning: Red eyes indicate a character is evil or dangerous.
* ScaryTeeth: Character has a mouthful of sharp, predatory [[FangsAreEvil fangs]] or heavily rotten, disgusting teeth.
* SlasherSmile: Character has an evil, bloodthirsty, frightening grin.
* TwoFaced: One side of the character's face is disfigured, distorted, discolored, or otherwise different from the other side of the face.
* WideEyesAndShrunkenIrises: Beady irises generally indicate that a person is unhinged.

See also:
* This trope's well-meaning (but still scary) sister, TheGrotesque.
* GameFace, which comes into play when a supernatural villain disguised as a human flashes his true form's Nightmare Face to scare someone.
* DemonHead, cousin to this trope.
* DemonicHeadShake, when the head shakes uncontrollably
* TakeOurWordForIt, when the face is too grotesque to even show.

Interesting tidbit: this is one theory as to why some people are [[MonsterClown afraid of clowns]]. Exaggerated mouths, bulbous noses, and pin-prick eyes are downright terrifying to young children who haven't yet figured out that the person is just wearing make-up and not ''deformed''.

* Some of the scarier {{vanity plate}}s sometimes used these. Some notable ones include the [[https://youtu.be/DEMwrKQXJiw VID Mask,]] [[https://youtu.be/90U0dYQDft0 the Klasky-Csupo Robot]] and the [[https://youtu.be/wdhQKrRw9kA Nickelodeon Pinchface.]]
* This [[http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-5SFnVyejLTQ/TuY_hkPxRMI/AAAAAAAAPpo/a7oH46U93As/s1600/Mobil1967.jpg horrific 60s print ad from Mobil]], created to advocate against driving with tension. And it does so by showing a ''horrifically'' distorted face. Interestingly, this image is actually of a dancer named Killer Joe Piro, and the original photograph was taken mid-dance, giving it its creepy look.
* 90s Rice Krispie Treats commercials showed kids who, upon having none of the treat left to satisfy their craving, would morph into a disturbing...''monster'' of some kind while bellowing "'''''IIIII WAAAAANNNTTT OOOONNNNEEEE!!!'''''" [[https://youtu.be/4j75iZ07-wI Brrrr.]]
* [[https://youtu.be/_ZBMlzYaS4Y This Scotland Against Drugs PIF.]] Let's just say the title of the upload ("I've Just Shit Me Pants") is VERY apt.
* Infamously, [[https://youtu.be/Ud8p8gxqpJ4 this Eggo commercial from 2001.]] A boy tries to steal some of his sister's waffles, only to immediately regret it.
* [[https://youtu.be/pFNKlk0B17g This anti-smoking PSA]] from the 70s has an animated variation of the "Three Little Pigs" story, and the Wolf gives off such a face right at the camera before leaving his place to get to the pigs' straw house.
* Wario in the infamous commercial for ''VideoGame/SuperMarioLand2SixGoldenCoins''. "Obey Wario, DESTROY MARIO!!!"
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Comic Books]]
* [[http://www.comics.org/issue/251817/cover/4/ The]] [[http://www.politedissent.com/archives/1937 eponymous]] ''ComicBook/JonahHex''. (That second link includes an informative essay on what the result of Hex being unable to close his right eye would lead to.)
* ''ComicBook/{{Batman}}'':
** Two-Face, obviously. Well, [[TwoFaced half of him]]. Varies from artist to artist, with [[https://imgur.com/SrNSD.jpg Tim Sale's rendering]] being particularly gruesome.
** The Joker, naturally. FrozenFace with a SlasherSmile? Check. Permanent UncannyValleyMakeup? Double Check. Looks like a MonsterClown from your worst nightmares? Quintuple ''check''. Taken up ''several'' notches in ''ComicBook/DeathOfTheFamily''. Prior to the story arc, Joker was last seen having his face ''surgically removed'' and left for the police to symbolize his "rebirth". When he returns, still without a face, he steals his original, preserved face from the GCPD lockup and proceeds to [[http://batman.wikia.com/wiki/File:The_Joker_-_New_52.jpg wear it like a mask]], using several hooks and leather straps to stretch it across his head in a grotesque parody of his original face. As the series goes on, the face starts to visibly decay and attract flies and at one point Joker even wears it ''upside-down'' to psychologically torment Red Robin.
** The Great White Shark lost most of his face (including ears, nose and hair) after being locked in a freezer and has since filed his teeth into points. As a result, he's [[http://images1.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20120105135033/marvel_dc/images/3/36/Warren_White_001.png nothing to scoff at, either.]]
* ''ComicBook/TheTransformersMoreThanMeetsTheEye'':
** Vos. Oh sweet holy crap, Vos. Vos is a Decepticon Justice Division member, and he combines ColdBloodedTorture with this trope. Transformer faces have been pretty ugly before, but somehow [[https://tfwiki.net/wiki/File:Mtmte_vos_wear_my_face.jpg this]] takes TheBlank, inverts the concept of the FaceStealer (a Face ''Giver'', perhaps?), and comes out the other side unsettling and terrifying.
--->'''Vos:''' wear. my. faaaace.
** Vos now has competition in the form of the ''incredibly'' creepy [[https://tfwiki.net/wiki/File:MTMTE48_Sunder_face.jpg Sunder]] from the same series. It probably comes as little surprise that he's a SerialKiller.
* All of the titular HatePlague victims in ''ComicBook/{{Crossed}}'' have a distinct, cross-shaped rash across their faces. And it's never without a look of pure, animalistic intent.
* Implied for Doctor Doom of ''ComicBook/FantasticFour''; first he gets his face scarred up by being caught next to an exploding machine (though precisely how badly scarred varies), and then he, in some tellings at least, puts his trademark metal facemask on. While it's still ''red hot''.
* ''ComicBook/JudgeDredd'':
** Judge Fear, one of the Dark Judges, is able to kill by simply revealing his face, though the reader never sees it. [[http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-wOrQaK6lQ-4/TrWvBvhi2sI/AAAAAAAAFKI/n3c8NJTcUJI/s1600/Gaze+into+the+fist+of+dredd0.jpg Averted once by Dredd himself.]]
** Dredd himself for that matter. The first time we "see" his face with his helmet off, there is a [[TheFaceless big black bar over it reading Censored For Graphic Content]] and the gang holding him at gunpoint are so horrified at what they see that they decide Dredd needs to die immediately. And while never taken to that extreme again, under [[DependingOnTheArtist Carlos Ezquerra's pen]], both Dredd and his clone father Judge Fargo tend to look like lumpy lipless potatoes as they get older.
** This forms a significant portion of the character named Otto Sump. Put simply, he is the ugliest man who has ever lived. Just ''how'' ugly is DependingOnTheArtist, but the only person in all of Mega-City One who ''doesn't'' find it hard to look at him for more than five seconds is Dredd himself.
* ''ComicBook/PaperinikNewAdventures'': Raghor's face is usually under a helm, but when he takes it off... not only does he seem to be completely scarred, but he also has {{Medusa}}[=-like=] tentacles.
* Rhona Burchill from ''ComicBook/UltimateFantasticFour'' has one courtesy of self-inflicted brain surgery to boost her own intellect, which left her with a large bald spot that exposes a very ugly, ragged scar and unnaturally bulging skull.
* Crazy Jane from ''ComicBook/DoomPatrol'' has several, including Black Annis and a personality whose ''head is a sun that shoots smaller suns''.
* ''ComicBook/WonderWoman'': Some members of the Greek pantheon like to manifest with horrific things for faces, most notably the fear god twins Phobos and Deimos, who each like to appear with a desiccated dog skull for a head, or in Phobos's case to manifest with shadow and twisting cobras for a face. Their father Ares also tends to go the shadow route, manifesting with formless darkness and two glowing red eyes beneath his helmet is his go to look.
* [[TheIrishMob Irish Mob]] member Finn Cooley, a memorable one-off villain in ''ComicBook/ThePunisherMAX''. A bomb went off in his face before he could get away, and now everything above the lower lip is just skull wrapped in sticky exposed musculature. At all times he either needs a transparent face mask or a mess of bandages to hold it in place. In spite of all that, he was one of the less nightmarish mobsters in that storyline.
* In ''ComicBook/FaithDreamside'', Belu's minions all have large yellow eyes and wide, sharp-toothed grins.
* The chapter of ''ComicBook/TalesFromTheDarkMultiverse'' dealing with ''ComicBook/{{Knightfall}}'' features a version of Bruce Wayne sporting yellow eyes and a SlasherSmile as a result of the torture he was subjected to as he gets revenge on Azrael.
* ''Franchise/SonicTheHedgehog'' is [[NightmareFuel/SonicTheHedgehog no stranger]] to [[NightmareFuel the stuff of nightmares]], but most ''Sonic'' media avoids this particular sub-trope. ''ComicBook/SonicTheHedgehogIDW'', however, features several notable examples.
** Mimic the Octopus, a new villain introduced in the ''Tangle & Whisper'' miniseries, is a shapeshifter with BlackEyesOfEvil and wrinkled lips (as part of a SkeletonMotif). He can show these features while disguised as someone else, with terrifying results.
** During the second major arc, [[BigBad Dr. Eggman]] causes a ZombieApocalypse (on purpose) with his Metal Virus bioweapon, which turns its victims--including some of Sonic's allies--into evil robo-zombies. The faces of these "Zombots" are intimidating by default, but they turn outright ''demonic'' [[SinisterSilhouettes when silhouetted]], [[https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/sonic/images/0/05/Zombot_Group.png/revision/latest?cb=20200213143938each as Sonic's Zombot-ified friends demonstrate]].
** Hell, even Robotnik gets a few of these in some panels being casted in shadow, and only being able to see his eerie grin and glasses which, while totally matching his Eggman Empire logo, is quite creepy-looking on the guy himself.
* In ''ComicBook/PumpkinJasonConley'', the titular vigilante develops a hideous face like a jack-o-lantern whenever she transforms.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Comic Strips]]
* Villains in the original ''ComicStrip/DickTracy'' newspaper comic were notoriously {{Nightmare Face}}d. This waned at about the time Chester Gould suffered a CreatorBreakdown, but has returned with the new artist, Dick Locher, who absolutely ''loves'' this trope.
* Al Capp's ''ComicStrip/LilAbner'' had a character named "Lena the Hyena" whose face was never shown, but by reputation and the reactions of other characters was this. Capp eventually ran a contest for readers to send in their own depictions of Lena. The winning entry, by Basil Wolverton, can be seen [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Lenahyena.png here]].
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Fan Works]]
* ''WebAnimation/{{Glitchtale}}'s'' Season 2 ArcVillain, [[spoiler:Bête Noire]], ''excels'' at this (fittingly for an someone whose power is rooted in [[spoiler:Fear]]). If you don't mind spoilers, [[https://glitchtale.fandom.com/wiki/B%C3%AAte_Noire?file=Bettyscary.png see here]] for an example. Looking like [[spoiler:a cute little girl]] most of the time, in reality her body is [[spoiler:a shell made from a dead little girl's corpse]]. Her true form has sharp teeth, a wide SlasherSmile, and the skin can be torn off to reveal inhuman pink flesh that looks disturbingly like someone who's been FlayedAlive.
* ''VideoGame/TSUnderswap'':
** Temmie follows in Flowey's footsteps by busting out a few of these, complete with [[EvilLaugh evil cackling]].
** [[spoiler:Asgore makes a scary face during his final attack on a genocide run, as a reference to one of Toby Fox's original concepts.]]
* ''WebAnimation/{{Underverse}}'':
** Especially with their already eerie black-and-white designs, X-Chara and later on [[spoiler:X-Gaster]] are very good at pulling this, with wide jagged-mouth {{Slasher Smile}}s and creepy BlackEyesOfEvil that have sinister [[RedEyesTakeWarning red]] and [[PurpleIsPowerful purple]] irises.
** [[spoiler:Ink Sans]] of all people does one as well in ''Xtra Scene 2'', though it's implied to have been a dream (or possibly [[spoiler:{{Foreshadowing}} that he isn't all that trustworthy]]). It's currently the page image for [[NightmareFuel/{{Underverse}} the Nightmare Fuel page]] for the series.
** Unsurprisingly, Flowey does this in ''OWNERS''.
* PlayedForLaughs with Ayla in ''Fanfic/VowOfNudity''. She's a changeling wizard with face-blindness, so her human form includes a horrifyingly uncanny amalgamation of blurry and misshapen facial features, but her neighbors and fellow cityfolk all pretend she's nailing it out of respect for her feelings.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Films -- Animated]]
* Twice in ''WesternAnimation/SnowWhiteAndTheSevenDwarfs''. First, the hideous gnarled faces Snow White sees on the trees during her escape in the forest. Then, the Queen the first time she reveals her hag look.

** Fidget also does it when he abducts Olivia.
* The face Joanna makes from ''WesternAnimation/TheRescuersDownUnder'' when she [[https://youtu.be/nuRohMj2f-s sticks her head out at Cody in the hole.]]
* ''WesternAnimation/OneHundredAndOneDalmatians'': The face Cruella De Vil makes [[http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v491/stinkylulu/born%20in%20-%20died%20in/CruellaDevillefreaky.png here.]] Also provides the page image for the movie's [[NightmareFuel/OneHundredAndOneDalmatians Nightmare Fuel]] page.
* The face Jack Skellington makes from ''WesternAnimation/TheNightmareBeforeChristmas'' when he [[http://necaonline.com/nbctcg/cardlist/characters/jack2.jpg threatens Lock, Shock, and Barrel.]]

* The closeups of the goblin faces from ''WesternAnimation/TheHobbit'' when we get our first look at them, especially the last one.
* One of the Velociraptors from ''WesternAnimation/{{Dinosaur}}'' does this when said Velociraptors attack Aladar and the lemurs prior to the Herd's arrival.
* This shows in a couple of Disney [[AnimatedAnthology Animated Anthologies]]:
** In the ''Music/PeterAndTheWolf'' scene of ''WesternAnimation/MakeMineMusic'', the wolf actually does this during his introductory scene.
** In ''WesternAnimation/FunAndFancyFree'', Lumpjaw does this when he first meets Bongo and growls at him.
*** Also, the extreme close-up of Willie the Giant's eyes when he wakes up and catches Mickey and company trying to make off with the singing harp. They wisely make a break for it.
* ''WesternAnimation/TheEmperorsNewGroove'': Yzma waking up pissed.

* The otherwise ridiculous movie ''[[WesternAnimation/TheCareBearsAdventureInWonderland Care Bears In Wonderland]]'' features a scene during the Evil Wizard's song when he very briefly produces an uncannily terrifying face.
* [[WesternAnimation/OliverandCompany "But everything from the doorknobs down...IS MINE!!!"]]

* [[WesternAnimation/TheLionKing1994 "Yes, our teeth and ambitions are bared!"]]
* [[BigBad Jafar]] briefly gains one of these at the end of ''WesternAnimation/{{Aladdin}}'' as he is gradually [[OneWingedAngel turning into]] [[ScaledUp a snake.]] His deranged smile at the end of his [[VillainSong mocking reprise of Prince Ali]] is also quite terrifying.
* [[WesternAnimation/ToyStory1 "...so PLAY NICE!!!"]] (Not that the face is very nightmarish on its own terms, but ''any'' sudden change of facial expression is terrifying if it appears on the face of a supposedly inanimate doll.)
* [[WesternAnimation/ThePrincessAndTheFrog Doctor Facilier]] during his spell-casting: [[https://youtu.be/8I4h-lHZ6Gw "I hope you're satisfied..."]]

** To specify: his CGI form is freaky enough due to his zombie-like appearance. His 8-bit face is scary as hell because it combines his zombie-like appearance with UncannyValley (his pixellated face in a 3D environment looks rather off).
* The face Dr. Jekyll makes as he completes his transformation into Mr. Hyde from ''WesternAnimation/ThePagemaster''.
* "[[WesternAnimation/TheSecretOfNIMH And the weight of it will crush his BONES!]]"

-->'''Unikitty''': YOU All NEED TO BE MORE FRIENDLY!!!!
* The face Jangles makes from ''WesternAnimation/InsideOut''.
* [[BigBad Thrax]] from ''Film/OsmosisJones'' has this down to an art form.
* Tamatoa from ''WesternAnimation/{{Moana}}'' at one point cuts off the light in his lair, revealing that he is covered with bioluminescent paint. His cartoonish expressions and overall appearance become a lot more menacing.
* Snoopy from ''WesternAnimation/ThePeanutsMovie'' does this After The Red Baron destroys Charlie Brown's papers
* The face that the Moon King makes from ''WesternAnimation/KuboAndTheTwoStrings'' shortly before His OneWingedAngel form.
* Sabor from ''WesternAnimation/{{Tarzan}}'' also sports this.
** [[EgomaniacHunter Clayton]] also does this as he Attacks Tarzan before he gets Hanged in the Vines.
* In ''WesternAnimation/TheSecretOfKells'', Aisling gains a brief but still very unsettling one when she helps Brendan into Crom Cruach's cave and Crom's tendrils start to drain the life out of her, making her face look withered and skeletal.
* [[WesternAnimation/TheBookOfLife "What, do tell, is your worst fear?"]]
* ''WesternAnimation/AllDogsGoToHeaven'': Some cut footage from when Charlie has his NightmareSequence of being dragged into Hell has a close-up of the boat demon sporting a frightening SlasherSmile. But that's nothing compared to the giant HellHound that appears in front of Charlie.
-->'''Hell Hound''': Now...you are ''MINE''!
* ''WesternAnimation/QuestForCamelot'': Ruber has one when he takes off his helmet after he breaks into Juliana's home with his henchmen.
* ''WesternAnimation/{{Zootopia}}'': During the Junior Ranger Scout initiation, after the room is darkened and Nick is knocked to the ground, the faces of the troop members as they muzzle Nick become [[https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/troop914_scary.jpg disturbingly menacing and sinister]].
* In ''WesternAnimation/TurningRed'', during Mei's nightmare, 4*Town members appear as flowers and do a split-second one of these.
* ''WesternAnimation/MonstersInc'': Sulley [[MyGodWhatHaveIDone accidentally scaring Boo and causing her to cry]] [[spoiler: as a result of her genuine fear of [[ReptilesareAbhorrent Randall.]]]]

* Part of what brought ''Literature/BloodMeridian'' back to the spotlight in 2023 is this particularly [[MemeticMutation memetic]] fan art of [[https://www.deviantart.com/john-d-salvatore/art/The-Judge-743222384 Judge Holden]] that captures his character all too well. For those too afraid to click, imagine a hairless, grinning, white-skinned giant looking down at you with ''unspeakable'' intentions.
* ''Literature/HarryPotter'':
** Voldemort is described as having a face like a skull, with glowing red eyes and slits for nostrils. It's hinted that his involvement with the Dark Arts warped him; in later books it's explained that he got this way by [[spoiler: splitting his soul to achieve immortality through his Horcruxes -- he actually used to be [[IWasQuiteALooker handsome]] as a young man.]] Ralph Fiennes does a pretty good job of conveying this description in the [[Film/HarryPotter movies]].
** The MadeOfEvil Dementors were even worse, although it's mitigated somewhat by the fact that they wore hooded cloaks and wraps covering up most of their decaying skin. The one part that ''isn't'' covered besides their "slimy-looking" hands is the [[GhostlyGape giant black hole where their mouths should be]], and it's said that their eye sockets are completely empty and covered with scabbed-over flesh.
* Quasimodo in Victor Hugo's novel ''Literature/TheHunchbackOfNotreDame'' is described as being so ugly, people mistake him for the Devil.
* In ''Literature/InvisibleMonsters'' by Creator/ChuckPalahniuk, the main character's lower jaw is shot off. [[https://web.archive.org/web/20181218091956/https://chuckpalahniuk.net/files/images/news/invisible-monsters-xander-lg.jpg This fanmade image]] '''(WARNING: gory/{{NSFW}})''' gives a pretty good idea of why this is a bit of an upsetting thing.
* ''Literature/TheKaneChronicles'':
** Menshikov, whose face was burned when he tried and failed to awaken Ra.
** A heroic example can be found in Bes, whose trademark attack is to scare the shit out of his opponent by distorting his face hideously and screaming "BOO!" Not that he's that handsome when he's not making that face.
** From the first book [[spoiler:(and second to an extent)]] there is a demon named Face-Of-Horror who is ExactlyWhatItSaysOnTheTin and worse. Compared to how other demons can be called Death-to-Corks and have corkscrews or other objects (or limbs) replacing their heads, Face-Of-Horror is a legitimately terrifying demon. If any of you are wondering what Face of Horror looks like: scaly, clawed talons instead of feet, and his face seems to have all the skin torn off, leaving only muscle. Anyone else reminded of a certain monster from ''Attack on Titan''?
* ''Literature/ThePhantomOfTheOpera''.
** This is the primary cause of Erik's tragedy (which makes all the slightly-marred-prettyboy adaptations that much more galling).
** Unless we are talking about [[http://i668.photobucket.com/albums/vv46/AnnePhantom/ponr076.jpg Gerard Butler]] or [[http://www.evilontwolegs.com/uploads/corey/phantom/8.jpg Julian Sands']] Phantoms, [[http://media.photobucket.com/image/Ramin%20Karimloo%20unmasked/OMGWTFGERIKHAWTNESS/RaminKarimlooMonkey.jpg this]] [[http://mariabjornson.com/images/phantom164s.jpg is not the slightly marred face]] [[http://davidlrattigan.com/Phantom%20of%20the%20Opera,%20unmasked,%201962.jpg of]] [[http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-WIPt0fpBHE8/TgI_9nqLKTI/AAAAAAAAAME/gAf3n1Cga5E/s1600/Lon_Phantom.jpg a pretty boy.]]
* ''Literature/{{Redwall}}'':
** Slagar the Cruel has a badly mutilated TwoFaced look thanks to a snakebite in his youth.
** Riggu Felis from ''High Rhulain'' is probably even worse. After having his face raked by an osprey's talons, he is described as looking like this: "The black-and-grey-striped fur was normal from ears to eyes, but below that it was red, glistening flesh and bone. The whole muzzle, nose, and upper lip had been torn off. Half of the warlord's face was a frightful mask - a spitting, bubbling skeleton, as he continualy sucked air to breathe."
* "The Dream" from ''Literature/ScaryStoriesToTellInTheDark''. Let's just say the pale woman from the original edition will [[CrazyPrepared make you wish you slept with a]] ''TabletopGame/{{Warhammer 40000}}'' [[ThereIsNoKillLikeOverkill weapon next to your bed]]. [[spoiler: [[SchmuckBait If you're feeling brave]], ''The Haunted House'' provides the page image for GhastlyGhost.]]
* ''Literature/ASongOfIceAndFire'':
** Sandor "The Hound" Clegane, who had the left [[TwoFaced half of his face]] burned off by his older brother when he was a kid.
** Lady "Ser" Brienne of Tarth ''was'' known for being extremely plain. But after the encounter with Biter she has now [[TwoFaced a very similar disfigurement]] to the Hound's, except caused by festering teeth of an evil idiot rather than by fire.
** Lady Stoneheart [[spoiler: formerly known as Catelyn Stark, who, before having her throat cut, tore up her own face out of grief and insanity, and was then thrown in the river, where she spent considerable time before being resurrected. The result is not pleasant.]]
* In John French’s ''Literature/ThousandSons'' novels, the sorcerer Ichneumon is so heavily mutated by the powers of Chaos that his face no longer resembles anything even remotely human. One half of his face is covered with clusters of eyes, and the other half is dotted with lamprey-like mouths. Ctesias, a fellow sorcerer, is so put-off by the sight of it—and by Ichneumon’s obvious pride at having been “blessed” with such a hideous face by the Chaos Gods—that he can’t think of anything to say for a long moment.
* Brightheart from ''Literature/WarriorCats'' has half of her face ''torn off'' by a pack of dogs, leaving her permanently scarred and missing an eye. [[http://vignette2.wikia.nocookie.net/warrior-cats/images/7/7d/Brightheart.jpg/revision/latest?cb=20100701063352 This picture]] from ''Cats of the Clans'' sums it up nicely.
* In ''Literature/WaxAndWayne'', Bleeder displays one of these between forms, a skinless face "of stretched muscle and grinning teeth". When she realizes she's been seen she makes another one by trying to copy the cabbie's face over the wrong bones, leaving her face a twisted nightmare.

* Little Ghoul on ''Series/BeetleborgsMetallix'' had one, shown from the back a la ''Beetlejuice''.
* ''Series/BreakingBad'' has a good example of this [[spoiler:in the Season 4 finale, when Gus is caught in an explosion. He calmly exits the crumbling room, adjusting his tie and looking perfectly fine, until the camera pans around to reveal half his face missing, hollowed eye socket staring blankly, teeth bared through the distinct lack of cheek. 263* ''Series/BuffyTheVampireSlayer'': Clem showed this to the potentials in "Potential".
** The ghostly James Stanley's rotting zombie-like face in "I Only Had Eyes For You" while scaring Buffy and dancing to a song with his teacher.
* In the ''Series/{{Cadfael}}'' series, this is the fate of Lazarus, the titular Leper of St Giles. [[spoiler: He was once the legendary knight, Guimar de Massard, but caught leprosy whilst crusading. 266* ''Series/DoctorWho'':
** The hideous alien face of a Sensorite pressed up against the glass of a spaceship in the first {{Cliffhanger}} of "[[Recap/DoctorWhoS1E7TheSensorites The Sensorites]]".
** The Chameleons. There's a good reason why their story is called "[[Recap/DoctorWhoS4E8TheFacelessOnes The Faceless Ones]]".
** The early Cybermen in "[[Recap/DoctorWhoS4E2TheTenthPlanet The Tenth Planet]]", with surgical-like cloth masks, black voids for eyes, and jaws that, when they talk, just lock open without moving for the duration of their speech.
** The Autons are living plastic. In appearance, they can range the spectrum from animate mannequin to indistinguishable from human. While costuming's moved on from their '70s heyday, back then... [[http://tardis.wikia.com/wiki/File:Autons3.jpg oh god.]]
** [[http://vignette3.wikia.nocookie.net/zarbi/images/8/88/Davros.jpg/revision/latest?cb=20101020223109 Davros]], who created the Daleks, had his face (and the rest of his body) hideously disfigured when his lab exploded.
** The Master in [[Recap/DoctorWhoS14E3TheDeadlyAssassin "The Deadly Assassin"]] and [[Recap/DoctorWhoS18E6TheKeeperOfTraken "The Keeper of Traken"]] who, being on the very verge of death, had basically become a walking corpse with the skeletal face to match (as best makeup of the 1970s and '80s could manage, anyway).
** Xoanon, the titular Face of Evil in "[[Recap/DoctorWhoS14E4TheFaceOfEvil The Face of Evil]]", so terrifying the people on the planet have a religion based upon placating it — an especially unusual and upsetting case because it's also played by Creator/TomBaker, with eyes bulging out of his head and the jaw working ''wrong''.
** The robots in "[[Recap/DoctorWhoS14E5TheRobotsOfDeath The Robots of Death]]" are an in-universe example. Some people in the story are fine with them or even relate to them, but others [[UncannyValley subconsciously equate their weird, distorted faces with disfigured people or animated corpses]], a recognised psychological disorder in the setting.
** [[Recap/DoctorWhoS14E6TheTalonsOfWengChiang "The Talons of Weng-Chiang"]]: Magnus Greel has a melted, spaghetti-like face due to a mutation caused by primitive time-travel technology.
** A lot of ''Doctor Who'' monsters, especially if they initally seem friendly, get a ''lot'' nastier-looking when they [[FaceHeelTurn get down to business]]. For example, the [[http://tardis.wikia.com/wiki/File:Gelth_Ambassador.jpg Gelth]] from [[Recap/DoctorWhos27E3TheUnquietDead "The Unquiet Dead"]].
** The Weeping Angels. The grey faces of a humanoid angel statue, [[http://images.wikia.com/tardis/images/b/be/Series5weepingangels.jpg with fangs]].
** In [[Recap/DoctorWhoS30E9ForestOfTheDead "Forest of the Dead"]] we get Miss Evangelista's [[http://images2.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20100502100328/tardis/images/e/e5/Forest_Of_The_Dead.jpg horribly distorted]] face in the virtual reality. She looks like a walking Picasso painting.
** Subverted in [[Recap/DoctorWhoS30E10Midnight "Midnight"]]. When Skye turns around, there is clearly a new consciousness, but her face is unchanged.
** The infectees in Creator/RussellTDavies and Creator/PhilFord's [[Recap/DoctorWhoS30E16TheWatersOfMars "The Waters of Mars"]] with their split, cracked faces.
** The [[http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a293/toolbox1234/DoctorWhoS5E2Smiler.png "Angry Face"]] of the mechanical Smiler androids from [[Recap/DoctorWhoS31E2TheBeastBelow "The Beast Below"]]. Their heads rotated 180 degrees to display one of two {{Frozen Face}}s — one pleased and smiling, the other disappointed and frowning. This made the appearance of the angry face, which was furious and snarling — and revealed by rotating the head ''another'' 180 degrees — a total surprise.
** The Silence from series 6, with their eye-covering eyelids, long faces and lack of a nose and mouth.
** The [[http://tardis.wikia.com/wiki/File:Siren-angry.jpg Siren]] from [[Recap/DoctorWhoS32E3TheCurseOfTheBlackSpot "The Curse of the Black Spot"]] when she gets angered.
** The Whispermen in [[Recap/DoctorWhoS33E13TheNameOfTheDoctor "The Name of the Doctor"]] have no eyes or nostrils, only sharp-toothed mouths.
* ''Series/{{Fringe}}'' has one episode where a biological weapon results in people developing scar tissue at an alarming rate. Biggest problem with this is that it turns them into a blank, covering their eyes, nose, and mouth, resulting in them suffocating.
* [[MonsterClown Pennywise]] in the made for TV movie version of ''Literature/{{IT}}''.
* Though ''obviously'' a mask, who ''doesn't'' wish they could forget the chilling grimace of Mr. Noseybonk from the old British TV series, ''Series/{{Jigsaw|1979}}''? And if that wasn't bad enough, WebVideo/StuartAshen had to go and use his powers of necromancy to ''revive'' the horror!
* Papa Lazarou of ''Series/TheLeagueOfGentlemen.''
* ''Series/Lucifer2016'': Lucifer is rather fond of scaring humans with his "Devil Face". In the episode "Monster", Lucifer's psychiatrist, Dr. Linda Martin, gets tired of his 'metaphors' about being the Devil, so he decides to drop his glamor. Linda just stares at him in shock. He restores his human features and asks what she thinks. She still keeps staring. So Lucifer quietly gets up and walks out, leaving Linda [[ThousandYardStare still staring at the place he was sitting]].
* Valin Hess from ''Series/TheMandalorian'' is a normal human Imperial officer with no alien traits whatsoever. And yet, his empty bug eyes and unnerving smile along with his sociopathic tendencies and phony nice guy attitude make for a character who's bound to make your skin crawl.
* ''Series/RedEyeWithGregGutfeld'' gives us [[https://youtu.be/EqOTU89cgC4 this.]]
* ''The Shining'' 1997 mini-series, though not considered as scary as the Kubrick version, certainly [[http://ilovesplatter.files.wordpress.com/2013/10/theshining1997.jpg has]] [[http://i1.ytimg.com/vi/KJHy-3mptmY/hqdefault.jpg it's]] [[http://www.vcdq.com/files/samples/14-2010/3987/897667093.jpg moments]].
* ''Series/TheSoup'', of all shows, has this in their "Tales from Home Shopping" segment. The intro for the segment shows some old-timey footage of people shopping. One of the customers' faces melts into a horrifying expression while a scream plays. It's PlayedForLaughs, but is arguably still rather scary, especially when they froze on the face when the intro was still new.
* Balok in the ''Series/StarTrekTheOriginalSeries'' episode "The Corbomite Maneuver".
* ''Series/{{Supernatural}}'':
** One who has sold their soul to a Crossroads Demon and whose time is nearly up begins seeing Nightmare Faces on anyone they encounter as a reminder that their own death is coming soon. We see these from the POV of these people a couple times, twice in "Crossroad Blues,", and again later at the very end of season 3 where [[spoiler: we see Sam from Dean's POV, his appearance briefly taking on a Nightmare Face]]. Happens again much later where someone sees Dean with a similar appearance.
** Other episodes also often have the various MonsterOfTheWeek cases briefly take one at some point, usually when being confronted by Sam and Dean. These faces can also often be revealed through mirrors, even when their non-reflection appearance is outwardly normal.
** Angels can see demons' true faces, which is useful for identifying those possessed. It poses issues a couple of times when amnesiac angels run into demons and are extremely confused and horrified, while everyone else just sees a normal human face.
* The lion from ''Series/{{Teletubbies}}'', especially when he says "Where is THE BEAR?!!!"
* In ''Series/TheTwilightZone1959'' episode [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Masks The Masks]], a dying man promises his entire fortune to his daughter and her family if they will wear grotesque masks for one evening. When the man dies at midnight, after telling them they have earned their inheritance, they remove the masks and find [[http://www.popcrunch.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/7.pubMasks01.jpg their faces have permanently taken on the masks' features]].
** The..uh..[[http://namtab.com/writing/MMislandCC.gif medical staff]] from the infamous episode "The Eye of the Beholder". In-universe, the patient's face (which looks like a normal face from the perspective of the audience) is seen is this.
* The creature dubbed "The Great Mutato" in ''Series/TheXFiles'', a genetically-engineered mistake whose many deformities included a grotesquely oversized double-face. As it turns out, though, he wasn't such a bad guy, and in fact his greatest desire was to see Music/{{Cher}} in concert.
* ''Series/TwinPeaks'' has moments of this, mostly in its surreal dream sequences - the animalistic scream Laura gives in Ronette's nightmare, for example. In one scene toward the end of season 2, the villainous Windom Earle unexplainedly has a chalky, white face and black teeth. And, finally, there are the [[HumanoidAbomination Woodsmen]] of Season 3, glaring psychotically out from behind [[AshFace a heavy layer of soot]].
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Music]]
* Music/AphexTwin's "Rubber Johnny". In fact, Aphex Twin has played this trope for Surreal Humor and Surreal Horror (sometimes both at the same time) in most of his music videos.
** Aphex Twin has also used his own face to play this trope on a few of his album covers, such as in [[https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/5/54/AphexTwinICareBecauseYouDo.jpg/220px-AphexTwinICareBecauseYouDo.jpg I Care Because You Do]], the KubrickStare of [[https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/3/3f/Richard_d_james_album_cover.jpg Richard D. 310* The last scene in Music/LadyGaga's video "Alejandro" in which the film burns up from the eyes and mouth out.
* In the music video for Music/{{Madonna}}'s "Bedtime Story", there's a part near the end where [[http://img269.imageshack.us/img269/3516/bedtimestories.jpg Madonna's mouth has been replaced by an eye and her eyes by two mouths.]] Do NOT click on that image! [[SchmuckBait You have been warned.]]
* In the music video for "Mama," by Music/{{Genesis|Band}}, when Music/PhilCollins [[EvilLaugh laughs]]. Also done in live performances of the song as well.
** "In the Air Tonight" does this as well. When the drum solo kicks in, Collins' black-and-white visage suddenly transforms into a blazing, brightly-colored, and VERY angry thermographic image.
* [[Music/{{Gwar}} GWAR]]:
** GWAR's former vocalist, Oderus Urungus, has a very frightening visage that looks like a cross between a horned goblin and a skinned pig. His earlier design was arguably worse because of its cheapness, making it look like his face was mangled in some horrific accident.
** The band's first female singer, Slymenstra Hymen, could make an absolutely monstrous scowl that gave the impression that she was ready to straight up ''murder'' the nearest living thing. Which, to be fair, is what GWAR is best at in-universe.
** The face of the boy who went mad after seeing Balsac's real face in the film ''It's Sleazy.'' He basically turned into a razor-toothed, wide-eyed goblin-creature through the power of pure fear and horrible photoshop. And it's on one of their album covers!
* Music/{{Soundgarden}}'s video for [[https://youtu.be/3mbBbFH9fAg&ob=av2e Black Hole Sun]]. It has this suburban neighborhood of [[StepfordSmiler creepy smiling people]] whose faces very suddenly become horrifyingly distorted.
* Barry Godber's cover artwork from Music/KingCrimson's ''Music/InTheCourtOfTheCrimsonKing''. It's basically a technicolor painting of a man screaming in absolute fear.
* The album cover of ''Music/TheMiracle'' by Music/{{Queen}} shows a composite of the band members' faces.
** The GentleGiant on Queen's album cover of ''Music/NewsOfTheWorldQueen''.
* The shaving weaselman on the cover of Music/FrankZappa's ''Music/WeaselsRippedMyFlesh''.
** Zappa's face on the TV on the cover of ''Music/OverNiteSensation''.
* Music/CaptainBeefheart's face on the album cover of ''Music/TroutMaskReplica'' is covered by a carp's head [[note]] and not a trout's head as the title implies [[/note]], showing a face you wouldn't want to see near your window at night.
* The little girl on the cover of ''Music/BeautifulFreak'' by Music/{{Eels}} has large creepy eyes.
* Music/TomWaits' close-up face on the cover of ''Music/BoneMachine''.
* Every friggin' album cover Music/MarilynManson appears on (''Music/SmellsLikeChildren'', ''Music/MechanicalAnimals'', ''Music/HolyWoodInTheShadowOfTheValleyOfDeath'') is haunting to watch.
* 2-D from Music/{{Gorillaz}} has two severe eight-ball cataracts, making it look like he has a pair of black, gaping holes for eyes. It's quite frightening in close-up, such as in the music video of "Feel Good, Inc." from ''Music/DemonDaysAlbum''. Ironically, he's considered very handsome in-universe and has a charming (if dopey) personality.
* The official music video (not the earlier fan-made one) for "Kids" from ''Music/OracularSpectacular'' by Music/{{MGMT}}, featuring deformed rubber masks with grotesque protruding eyes and tongues. Then you notice that ''a small child is crying'' and reacting to these horror faces.
* Music/{{Bjork}} in the music video of "Alarm Call" for ''Music/{{Homogenic}}'', where she changes into a monster with MoreTeethThanTheOsmondFamily!
* Music/IronMaiden: Any cover where Eddie the Head makes an appearance, especially [[SelfTitledAlbum Iron Maiden.]]
* Music/OzzyOsbourne’s face on the cover of Down to Earth has a much more skeletal and macabre look throughout his body and face, and two heads coming out of his head screaming as if they’re in pain, as it’s really a nightmarish look!
* The music video for [[Music/MichaelJackson Michael Jackson's]] [[Film/MichaelJacksonsGhosts "Ghosts"]] has a lot of creepy moments in it thanks to its supernatural aesthetic, including Michael stripping himself of his skin into a skeleton, but [[https://p1.storage.canalblog.com/23/30/1077040/83171051_o.jpg one face]] from the music video has become rather infamous for its creep factor.
%%* [[SarcasmMode What an adorable]] [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GpmLc4QwDhY dog!]]
* The music video for [[Music/AzealiaBanks Azealia Banks']] "Yung Rapunxel" features her eyes replaced by mouths, with each mouth working independently to lip-sync the lyrics of the song.
* The album cover for ''Monster'' by Music/{{Rem}} is a close up of a bobcat-lynx-cougar... ''thing'' drawn in black marker on a balloon. It is ''very'' disquieting.
* The cover for ''Runner's High'' by ''Music/ThePillows'' is a pastel drawing of a white rabbit with its mouth wide open and a pair of absolutely ''bloodshot'' eyes. It's guaranteed to frighten children.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Mythology & Religion]]
* Myth/ClassicalMythology: The Gorgons, whose [[BrownNote faces]] would [[TakenForGranite turn you to stone]]. They supposedly had been beautiful originally, before they became like this. And some think they might still be beautiful, but there is no way of finding out. In the original, only Medusa could petrify with a look; her sisters had different powers (one just caused people to instantly drop dead).
* Myth/CelticMythology: One of the many horrific details of Cu Chulainn's infamous ''[[UnstoppableRage riastrad]]'' or "warp-spasm" was that one of his eyes would bulge out of the socket (and fall out) and the other would be sucked in, his lips would peel back to reveal a SlasherSmile with MoreTeethThanTheOsmondFamily, and his mouth would stretch down to his chest. Even if he wasn't exactly an evil guy, people tended to be really uneasy around him.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Podcasts]]
* A recurring motif in ''I Am in Eskew''. The main protagonist, David Ward, sees them on the blueprints of an unending, blank building he visits, the audience that watches him and Allegra, and especially on his fake son, Happy Jack Adam, who he is forced to live with after [[spoiler: he lets Jack kill his fake daughter, Lucia]].

[[folder:Tabletop Games]]
* ''TabletopGame/DungeonsAndDragons'':
** The [[http://www.enworld.org/forum/showthread.php?408034-Krenshar krenshar]], a catlike monster introduced in 3[[superscript:rd]] edition to give low-level paladins a use for their fear immunity, uses its complex cheek and brow musculature to ''fold its whole face back'', exposing bare muscle and bone, when using its ''Scare'' special ability.
** Changelings from the ''TabletopGame/{{Eberron}}'' campaign can take the "Disturbing Visage" feat, which among other tricks can unnerve foes by looking more intimidating. The illustration on the ''Races of Eberron'' sourcebook definitely falls into this trope, but exaggerates the actual effectiveness of the feat.
* ''TabletopGame/VampireTheMasquerade'':
** The Nosferatu have this as a Clan Curse, as their founder was PunishedWithUgly by Caine himself, and anyone embraced into the clan will follow suit. They can't live in normal human or vampire society, but they've learned to cope, woe be to anyone who underestimates this.
** The Tzimisce do this by choice. Their Vicissitude discipline allows them to mold flesh like clay, and as one of the more inhuman clans, they modify themselves and their servants into horrifying forms, faces included.
* ''TabletopGame/Warhammer40000''
** Lucius the Eternal of the Emperor's Children has a millennia-long habit of ritually scarring his face after every victory. This, combined with his long, ropey tongue, makes him particularly disquieting even by the standards of the setting.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Toys]]
* The Rahkshi from ''Toys/{{Bionicle}}''. Averted in the toys themselves (due to the limitations of toy design), but it is used in full force in the movie ''Mask of Light'' to unleash pure NightmareFuel on other characters (and the viewers, naturally).
** The Barraki also count. They all have these freakishly bulbous, emotionless eyes that seemingly stare into nothingness. Pridak takes the cake, however, with his butt-ugly SlasherSmile, and what looks like blood splashed all over his face (which is actually his natural coloring, according to WordOfGod).
** Makuta, being a ShapeShifter-race, are full of examples, and many of the fan-built ContestWinnerCameo figures have these as well.
* The [[http://www.independent.co.uk/news/weird-news/lists/dollar-store-toy-wand-has-hidden-picture-of-demonic-child-cutting-herself-with-a-kitchen-knife-9850505.html Evil Wand]] toy discovered by a parent at an Ohio dollar store has a hidden image under the foil on the wand: A disturbing photo of a girl with glowing orange eyes and a bloody, rapacious SlasherSmile cutting into her wrist with a knife.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Visual Novels]]
* Kokichi Oma from ''VisualNovel/DanganronpaV3KillingHarmony'' has ''five'' of these, introduced more or less once a chapter. He makes a new one just as you get used to the old ones. Among these are [[https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/danganronpa/images/b/b1/Danganronpa_V3_Kokichi_Oma_Halfbody_Sprite_%2836%29.png/revision/latest/scale-to-width-down/511?cb=20180506071515 impossibly]] [[https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/danganronpa/images/a/a0/Danganronpa_V3_Kokichi_Oma_Halfbody_Sprite_%2823%29.png/revision/latest/scale-to-width-down/535?cb=20180506071402 wide grins]], [[https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/danganronpa/images/d/d5/Danganronpa_V3_Kokichi_Oma_Halfbody_Sprite_%2824%29.png/revision/latest/scale-to-width-down/538?cb=20180506071402 inverted color palettes]], and [[https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/danganronpa/images/f/fd/Danganronpa_V3_Kokichi_Oma_Halfbody_Sprite_%2831%29.png/revision/latest/scale-to-width-down/684?cb=20180506071406 shadowy black skin with bulging eyes]]. The [[https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/danganronpa/images/e/e9/Danganronpa_V3_Kokichi_Oma_Halfbody_Sprite_%2832%29.png/revision/latest/scale-to-width-down/684?cb=20180506071407 final face]] really takes the cake.
** The fan-made ''VisualNovel/SuperDanganronpaAnother2'' is [[FromBadToWorse worse than V3]] in this regard, with the members of [[BigBadEnsemble Void]] each flashing a SlasherSmile and [[RedEyesTakeWarning ominous red eyes]] when they're finally [[HiddenVillain unmasked]]. And then there's [[spoiler: Kanade]], who manages to put ''Kokichi'' to shame - to give you an idea, this person has '''''eleven''''' different frightening faces, each one more disturbing than the last!
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Web Animation]]
* Pinkie Pie in [[https://youtu.be/43AuJjuxqAw Mister Davie's]] version of ''Fanfic/CupcakesSergeantSprinkles'' pulls off a series of [[http://postimg.org/image/a44pxmgmz/ increasingly]] [[http://postimg.org/image/7do4p2nf3/ disturbing]] [[http://postimg.org/image/49yjq3sfn/ expressions]] that all [[TechnicallyASmile technically qualify as happy smiles]].
* AxCrazy Fluttershy from the ''WebAnimation/PonyDotMov'' episode "Shed" sports this during her SanitySlippageSong intending to [[CrossesTheLineTwice eat Rainbow Dash's brain]]. [[https://youtu.be/6YRQhAnQcgs Oh no...]]
* In ''WebAnimation/HomestarRunner'', Sir Shmallow (a 1930s version of the already-horrific Marshy the Marshmallow) briefly assumes one of these while screaming at the viewer to "Look lively!"
-->'''The Homestar Runner:''' That monster's gonna give me nightmares.
* In the flash parody ''[=Nin10Doh=]: To the 64th Power,'' an AxCrazy [[VideoGame/EarthBound1994 Paula]] ([[HairOfGoldHeartOfGold of all people]]) sports an absolutely [[RedEyesTakeWarning demonic one]] when Ness confronts a [[DogsAreDumb Runaway Dog]], and again as she says those last two lines of her sentence:
-->'''Paula:''' Aw. I guess now I'll just have to '''[[OmnicidalManiac KILL EVERYONE]]!!!''' (''[[DemonHead leans in close to camera]] [[SlasherSmile and smiles wickedly]]'') [[https://youtu.be/sQJoyRkKHX4 full clip]]
* In ''WebAnimation/AlfredsPlayhouse'', Alfred makes creepy faces ''constantly''.
* Flippy's AxCrazy SplitPersonality Fliqpy from ''WebAnimation/HappyTreeFriends'' has one consisted of wide, demented eyes with CreepyShadowedUndereyes and a [[FangsAreEvil fanged]] SlasherSmile pasted on his face the majority of the time.
* Used frequently in ''Creator/SrPelo'''s ''WebAnimation/MokeysShow'', in which the faces the characters [[JumpScare randomly]] make in later episodes become [[SerialEscalation more and more grotesque]]. One of the best examples are the faces Momi makes in [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XTrnSJLXGBg Is Not Christmas]], but [[NightmareFuel/MokeysShow this particular one]] really takes the cake for being absolutely horrifying.
* ''WebAnimation/SquimpusMcGrimpus'': The ''Five Nights At Freddys'' analog horror serie's SignatureScene is one of these. In "Facial Recognition Testing", we get to see how the animatronics see [[BigBad William Afton]]; while the grey smug little smile he has before it all goes wrong is unnerving, it's outdone when we get to see the juicy part: Williams face contorted into a SlasherSmile, tinted purple, and warped to a freaky shape. [[spoiler: "Finale" makes it worse, as when Michael burns down Fazbears Fright, in turn killing Springtrap, we get to see the horrific revision of Aftons portrait, now tinted red and his face warping into a terrified expression to match his ultimate fate.]]
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Webcomics]]
* ''Webcomic/CtrlAltDel'': In the ''Starcaster Chronicles'' segment, Cort met up with a KnowledgeBroker named Ssissimias to look for a job that pays in advance. Then it's revealed that Ssissimias is a HiveMind of PuppeteerParasite infesting the corpse of a man, with holes on its right cheek where the worms poke out at times. They are affable and reasonable, but warns Cort that if he ever crosses them, he will be their next meat puppet. [[https://cad-comic.com/comic/the-starcaster-chronicles-04-06/ Tryphophobics, beware.]]
* ''Webcomic/EightBitTheater'': Comedic InUniverse example is Black Mage. Let's just say he [[GoMadFromTheRevelation doesn't show his]] [[EarthShatteringKaboom face for a reason]].

** Return X is rather skilled at these... as seen [[http://stardroids.net/wordpress/?p=77 here]]...
* Characters in ''Webcomic/MiasWorld'' are known for suddenly pulling ones that would cause most people to shit themselves. Especially [[BewareOfTheNiceOnes King and '44.]]. [[NightmareFuel Seriously, Jesus Christ]].
* ''Webcomic/{{Hoodrats}}'': Skyblack plays this trope more than once, usually when the comic wants to highlight how dangerous she is. 398* ''Webcomic/{{Homestuck}}'' has a few. Particularly notable is Jack Noir, who... [[http://i203.photobucket.com/albums/aa281/Jiminiminy/127566327117.gif holy shit.]]
** [-and you...-] '''''[[http://www.mspaintadventures.com/?s=6&p=darkcage GOT ONE]]'''''

** And Gamzee fights for the [[http://www.mspaintadventures.com/?s=6&p=008688 title image....]]
* ''Webcomic/MobPsycho100'': Any time Mob displays anger is usually a case of [[TranquilFury Tranquil Fury]], with little change of expression. When he discovers however [[spoiler: what appears to be as the burning corpses of his family in a house fire]], his expression becomes a ''downright terrifying'' face of overwhelming, burning rage. Sweet [[https://i.redd.it/50qbsxqk2ri21.jpg dreams everyone]].
* ''Webcomic/SleeplessDomain'': When Tessa [[DreamSequence relives her Dream]], things quickly [[NightmareSequence start going off the rails]] as Goops inserts her own memories, causing the Girl in the Dream's face to melt away into her own terrifying SlasherSmile. [[https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/sdnightmareface.png Sweet dreams, Tessa!]]
* ''Webcomic/RomanticallyApocalyptic''[='s=] main protagonist, "Zee Captain" has a face like this, apparently. In issue 23, he confronts the aliens that [[spoiler:abducted Snippy]] after [[spoiler:OWNING one of them with a [[ImprobableWeaponUser slice of cake]](!)]] and forces them to gaze upon his Angry face, removing his gas mask in front of them. We don't see, but the alien's reaction says [[http://romanticallyapocalyptic.com/23 a lot!]]
%%* [[http://comic.naver.com/webtoon/detail.nhn?titleId=350217&no=20&weekday=tue A short Korean webcomic]] that ends [[spoiler: with a ScreamerPrank]].
* ''Webcomic/Trevor2020'': Trevor's face is going through some FacialHorror by the time the audience gets to see it, and it isn't exactly getting any better.
* ''Webcomic/GunnerkriggCourt'' has a couple of instances...Zimmy's already a little creepy, given she's got some kind of black clouds where her eyes should be. Then [[http://www.gunnerkrigg.com/archive_page.php?comicID=1047 this]] happens in the middle of a psychic jaunt AstralProjection into an unconscious Antimony's subconscious.
* ''Webcomic/VioletZombie'': Penelope Martinez demonstrates this ability frequently, either to scare people or just for fun.
* ''Webcomic/SchlockMercenary''. [[http://www.schlockmercenary.com/2012-11-04 Tagii is not happy]] about being [[spoiler:cut off from her external senses by Thurl]], and as a result of her treatment [[GoMadFromTheIsolation takes up a far more ghoulish appearance that reflects her condition]].
* In ''Webcomic/CommanderKitty'', [[BigBad Zenith]] [[http://www.commanderkitty.com/2010/07/25/whose-side-are-you-on/ picks up this kind of expression when she realizes Nin Wah is present.]] She shows off a subtler yet simultaneously ''far'' [[http://www.commanderkitty.com/2011/12/11/did-you-try-rebooting/ creepier one]] when she's about to disembowel Ace and company.
* In ''Webcomic/MonsterPulse'', energy ghosts can cause a human's body part to become autonomous. One example is Michael Rjinder, whose entire skin has become such a monster. It usually placidly sits on his body, looking eerie with its striations. But [[http://www.monster-pulse.com/comic/page-38-chapter-16/ when it gets excited...]]
* ''WebComic/ThePropertyOfHate'' gives us [[https://jolleycomics.com/TPoH/Ex_position/297 Click's waterlogged face]] during "Ex position." You're bound to get nightmares from seeing it.
* In ''Webcomic/ElGoonishShive'', Pandora's face [[http://egscomics.com/comic/2016-08-19 turns monstrous]] when she gets angry. Her eyes [[HellishPupils become like a cat's]], and her teeth become sharp and with pronounced canines.
* ''Webcomic/SweetHome2017'': The author's trademark style shines through with the monsters and the monster infected, giving them one of these anytime any one of them does anything evil. The criminals also get it sometimes, to a lesser degree, [[spoiler: as well as Hyein after her SanitySlippage and Hyun when his monster side takes over.]]

* Half of the [[http://creepypasta.wikia.com/wiki/Creepy_Images_(Gallery) creepy images]] hosted on the {{Creepypasta}} Wiki will want to make you sleep with a gun under your pillow. 427** FluffyTheTerrible's page image used to be the beast from [[Film/{{Creepshow}} "The Crate"]]. It resembled some kind of baboon-dog with a mouth full of teeth.
** Creator/JunjiIto's works often include such faces. The image for the page on his creator page, for example, which is taken from chapter 4 of his ''Voices in the Dark'' collection of one-shots.

It's a mask that looks like [[http://www.foundfootagefest.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/12/Foundfootagefest-Rejuvenique562.png this]] and delivers tiny shocks to the face.
** The blog, ''[[http://theworstthingsforsale.com The Worst Things for Sale]]'', has referred to it as the "[[http://theworstthingsforsale.com/2013/04/03/facial-horror/ Rejuvenique Hell Mask]]".

* Website/{{Killerbunnies}}' Io "Nightmare Fuel" [=McMorrison=] posses a somewhat milder example of this trope. To elaborate further, she has with her wide, somewhat angry looking blue eyes and her teeth are growing through the skin to outside of her mouth. Naturally,on the note of her teeth, with such a deformity, one wonders how she eats.
* And then of course there's the infamous Momo of the Momo Challenge, which originated as a creepy statue in Japan with giant blank, staring eyes and a rather unsettling smile.
* The picture in the Main/{{Creepypasta}} ''[[https://creepypasta.fandom.com/wiki/Teeth.jpg Teeth.jpg]]. [[spoiler:It was made from one of the protagonist's friends with [[BodyHorror more than just Photoshop]]]].

[[folder:Web Videos]]
* In ''WebVideo/MarbleHornets'', near the end of Entry #22, and in one of totheark's video responses.
* Speaking of Marble Hornets, the Observer from ''WebVideo/TribeTwelve'' has a pretty nightmarish face at the end of COMECLOSER.
* A RunningGag in WebVideo/MisterPlinkettReviews is for him to [[https://youtu.be/62UzLgdb1GQ react]] (or overreact...) to an inhuman looking face:
-->OH MY GOD, WHAT'S WRONG WITH YOUR ''FACE''!?
* WebVideo/ToddInTheShadows is revealed to have this in ''WebVideo/ToBoldlyFlee'', neatly explaining why he does all of his reviews [[ExactlyWhatItSaysOnTheTin in the shadows]] or wearing a mask. Naturally, [[TheUnreveal the other characters see it but the audience does not]]. The horrifying thing about his face? According to WordOfGod, his face is a mirror into people's souls -- the worse you are, the worse his face looks. Which is why the Makeover Fairy and WebVideo/TheNostalgiaChick have both reacted in horror to it. The fact that [[Creator/AllisonPregler Lupa]] remained calm when seeing Todd's face may lessen this slightly (indicating that good people see a more normal-looking face). The concept is still pretty creepy, though.
* "[[http://youtu.be/8Q2P4LjuVA8 The Glitch]]" by ''WebVideo/CorridorDigital'' focuses on a group of game characters as they try to evade a series of [[GameBreakingBug game-breaking glitches]]. [[Franchise/SuperMarioBros Mario]] falls into a glitched portion of the game world, and just before he sinks in completely, his face suddenly and graphically morphs into several hideous visages as his screams digitally decompose.
* The reason why Creator/{{Laina}} Morris became well-known as the [[ClingyJealousGirl Overly]] [[StalkerWithACrush Attached]] [[MemeticMutation Girlfriend]]. And she only needs to open her eyes wide and [[SlasherSmile smile]] [[https://youtu.be/Zg6iMDfOl9E to do so.]]
* This trope plays a major role in [[https://youtu.be/UDZBzXa6BUM Illusion of Bias]] when the girl is unhappy the she lost her face.[[spoiler: She then has a nightmare where she has a hideous face.]]
* The entirety of ''WebVideo/MonsterFactory'' is based on this trope. Out of all of the monsters in the series, Truck Shepard has by far the most nightmarish face, because its features have been horribly distorted thanks to a little hacking. For example, at one point his cheek stretches into infinite and his eye is several inches away from his face. In the words of Griffin, "Yikes!"
* ''WebVideo/BedtimeStoriesYoutubeChannel'' has [[spoiler:[[https://imgur.com/a/fi7RK Michael Taylor's face]] at the ending of "The Devil Made Me Do It"]]. It didn't help that the narrator had mentioned that there were still 3 demons [[DemonicPossession still possessing him]] after an incomplete exorcism.
* The "basic" expressions for the {{Inhuman Emotion}}s that the FantasticDrug [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Td2x8s9GZlo Thalasin+]] enables you to experience. Creator/JunjiIto would be proud.
* ''Film/LightsOut2016'' Good luck sleeping tonight.......or ever again. Just watch Diana's true form when the lights are on - espeically in the 2013 short film when that......thing appears on the woman's bedside table. It is seriously nightmare fuel and we advise you not to search it. For those of you that want a description of the jumpscare without searching it, here it is: the creature in the short film is a nightmarish humanoid with a female-like appearence, dead white eyes and a mouth full of sharp teeth, alongside long brown hair.
