"Tron" is [[GratuitousGreek Greek]] for a form of instrument (such as the "{{Metatron}}" from mythology was an instrument of {{God}}). These days, it's used as a suffix for advanced electronic technology in general, because of that Latin word "Electron" as well as the trope TronLines.

But this trope is about how in fiction, it's used as a suffix just for RuleOfCool. Sometimes it's a name, sometimes it's a device that doesn't really fit the suffix, but it's called that anyway. This trope was especially common in TheEighties as the explosion in personal computer and video game console sales during that decade made elec'''tron'''ic devices and the resulting discourse around them much more mainstream.

Compare ThingOMatic, TheSomethingForce, LawOfAlienNames and XtremeKoolLetterz. See also AdvancedTech2000, where an object's name is suffixed with a large number to make it sound impressive (and is sometimes used with this trope to make the name even more outlandish).

[[folder:Animetron & Mangatron]]
* When ''Anime/GoLion'' and ''Anime/DairuggerXV'' were [[{{Frankenslation}} combined into a new series]] for the US, it was dubbed ''Anime/{{Voltron}}'', and all follow ups kept that name.
* ''Anime/{{Noein}}'' features enemy mechas called "Destructrons", which is somewhat of a {{narm}} for some, as it doesn't really fit the series' [[SlidingScaleOfSillinessVersusSeriousness serious tone]].
* ''Anime/FlintTheTimeDetective'' had {{Mon}}s that did a FaceHeelTurn when stamped on the forehead by AppliedPhlebotinum, and "Tron" slapped at the end of their names.
* ''Anime/NurseWitchKomugi'': Magical Maid Koyori once turned [[MonumentalBattle Tokyo Big Sight]] into a giant TransformingMecha, calling it "Big Sightron". It got its own [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wD3dtfJ4Vtw Animated OP]] in the DVD special features. (''Misspelled in this video as "Big Cytron"''.)
* The early Japanese Franchise/{{Transformers}} [[DubNameChange renamed the Autobots and Decepticons]] to 'Cybertrons' and 'Destrons' respectively (this has been {{retcon}}ned to the US names as of the Film/TransformersFilmSeries).
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Card-tron Games]]
* ''TabletopGame/MagicTheGathering'' has three lands that are collectively nicknamed the "Urzatron". Assemblying [[http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?multiverseid=83316 Urza's Tower]], [[http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?multiverseid=83314 Urza's Mine]], and [[http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?multiverseid=83315 Urza's Power Plant]] will greatly increase each land's mana production.
* In fitting with the superhero theme, the card game TabletopGame/SentinelsOfTheMultiverse has Omnitron, a rogue artificial intelligence intended to mass produce weapons to end wars.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Comic-tron Books]]
* Ultron, recurring foe of ComicBook/TheAvengers. Could be a portmanteau of the prefix '''ultra-''' and '''tron'''.
* ''ComicBook/{{Batman}}'': Professor Pyg refers to his surgically modified minions as "Dollotrons". While the "doll" part of their name makes sense (given their appearance and [[LivingDollCollector Pyg's own obsessions]]), the "-tron" suffix is less explicable, as the Dollotrons are by all accounts entirely human, with no electronic components. Of course, Professor Pyg [[{{Cloudcuckoolander}} isn't the most rational person to begin with]]; the name likely makes sense to him and him alone.
* In addition to the roster of infamous Franchise/{{Transformers}} characters, the rare ''Transformers In 3-D'' comic had a group of CanonDisContinuity villains called the Destructrons.
[[/folder]]

* The world of Gametron, which is based on the Grid from the movie ''Film/{{TRON}}'' in the ''Fanfic/EmpathTheLuckiestSmurf'' story "Inside The Game".
* ''Fanfic/TheVictorsProject'': Hardcore fans of District Six's Hunger Games tributes are dubbed Sixatrons. They become increasingly unruly as more time passes without anyone from the District wining, to the point of violently rioting after a quarter century with no wins and the Gamemakers eventually deciding to appease them by rigging the Twenty-Eighth Hunger Games so the tributes from Six are more likely to succeed.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Films-tron -- Live-Action]]
* ''Film/KamenRiderBeyondGenerations'' has Kamen Rider Century's transformation belt, the Cyclotron Driver, which got its name by applying this trope to the name of [[Series/KamenRider Ichigo]]'s motorcycle, the Cyclone. Fittingly, the Driver itself is created in 2071 and resembles a futuristic version of Ichigo's Typhoon belt.
* ''Film/{{Tron}}'' is so awesome that it doesn't need a prefix. The creator [[WordOfGod stated]] that the inspiration was a shortening of elec''tron''ic. By complete coincidence there is a "tron" command[[note]]"trace on", to track the order of code execution[[/note]] from several varieties of the BASIC programming language.
* One of the ''Puppet Master'' films (no relation to the Heinlein book) had a doll called the "Decapatron".
* [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orgasmatron Orgasmatron]] from the Creator/WoodyAllen movie ''Sleeper''.

It was even {{Lampshade|Hanging}}d by the show's stunt team at [[FanConvention Power Morphicon]] when they had a fan play a monster named "Hairgelatron".
* ''[[Series/ThatMitchellAndWebbLook Mitchell and Web]]'' parody it in the 'Vectron' sketch. [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=icTrzUuWlHI See it here]].[[note]]Railfans will find this sketch extra silly as these people are technically worshiping a ''locomotive''.[[/note]]

** ''Series/UltramanOrb'' has a new MechanicalMonster kaiju called Galactron. It was originally supposed to be named either "Galaxy Dragon" or "Salvatron", but later the names got combined.
