->''"He stood in the center of the room, his head thrown back in silent laughter, his arms raised above his head, his fists clenched in that famous, overly dramatic gesture known to theatre students everywhere as 'milking the giant cow'. Yes, it was hokey and clichéd, and Voltmeter knew it, but he loved doing that gesture anyway, the quintessential stance of a man mad with power."''
-->-- ''Literature/HeroicsForBeginners''

Among drama students, "Milking the Giant Cow" is a term that refers to the practice of holding your hands skyward (or merely gesticulating wildly) to show emotion. May be accompanied by a SkywardScream.

If they fall to their knees while doing so, they are contractually obligated to raise their hands to the heavens, grasp the invisible teats tightly, and pull down a few times, as if milking an oversized bovine.

This also occurs when a character just can't sit still. A character may pump their hands up and down theatrically while speaking... "for emphasis". If played for laughs, they may do so while holding a beverage, or some sort of blunt object -- which will, of course, go flying everywhere.

If it is done in order to ChewTheScenery, it may be [[RuleOfCool necessary]] to Milk The Cow. Not to be confused with HamAndCheese. Unless the actor chooses to milk ''while'' ordering HamAndCheese to chew. [[{{Metaphorgotten}} Or other dairy products.]]

A critical part of being a LargeHam. See also BigNo, AngryFistShake, FutileHandReach, GlovedFistOfDoom, GotTheWholeWorldInMyHand, and SkywardScream, as well as particularly over-the-top cases of ItaliansTalkWithHands. In a WorldOfHam, ''everyone'' does this. Often part of GoingThroughTheMotions. If one tries to dial back on this, they might go FingerTenting instead.

[[folder:Actors]]
* Creator/JeffGoldblum's gesticulations (on and offscreen) have been affectionately described as "floating hands" by his fanbase, and Sofia Boutella admitted that she was disappointed not to be able to watch his hands in action when shooting their one scene together in ''Film/HotelArtemis'' because his character was strapped to a gurney. He's also admitted to taking any opportunity to smack a table to emphasize a point in a scene (both ''Film/{{The Fly|1986}}'' and ''Film/JurassicPark'' having him doing this).
* Creator/LeslieNielsen perfected the "wildly gesticulating while holding a drink" version.
* Both Creator/KevinMichaelRichardson and Creator/MarkHamill did this while voicing their [[WesternAnimation/TheBatman respective]] [[WesternAnimation/BatmanTheAnimatedSeries versions]] of ComicBook/TheJoker. This is usually carried over into the animation.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Anime & Manga]]
* ''Anime/CodeGeass'': [[Characters/CodeGeassLelouchLamperouge Lelouch Lamperouge]], being a LargeHam, does it all the time. Even when simply removing a contact lens, [[spoiler:which coincidentally unlocks his Geass power, but that's details]]. At some point, C.C. asks him why he needs to be so theatrical when he uses his Geass, and he tells her to shut up. It should be obvious to C.C. and the audience; if he's only exposing his eye during the instant of one command, a flourish would draw the required attention to that eye.
* Light Yagami indulges in this a few times over the run of ''Manga/DeathNote'' when the central conflict has had a dramatic shift and he's not compromising himself to anyone present. Because, and this cannot be emphasized enough, the guy is really, really crazy under all that suave manipulation.
* ''Franchise/DragonBall'': [[Characters/DragonBallVegeta Vegeta]] has a tendency to raise his clenched fists and gesticulate when he gets enraged.
* Itsuki Koizumi has been shown doing this from time to time in the ''Literature/HaruhiSuzumiya'' anime, perhaps most notably when he's actually cast as Guildenstern in a high school performance of ''Theatre/RosencrantzAndGuildensternAreDead''. Kyon also does this at one point during the last episode of the Endless Eight arc.
* ''Nobody'' in ''Manga/JoJosBizarreAdventure'' will ever turn down the chance to make an overly dramatic pose when hamming it up. Infamously, Caesar and Joseph from ''[[Manga/JoJosBizarreAdventureBattleTendency Battle Tendency]]'' are very prone to this.
* ''Manga/MagicalGirlLyricalNanohaVivid'': Lutecia Alpine does this in her first scene. Doubles as a sign of her CharacterDevelopment since she had been an EmotionlessGirl in previous seasons.
* ''Anime/MazingerZ'': BigBad Dr. Hell was prone to make this when he was monologuing, mainly in the original manga and Anime/{{Mazinkaiser}}. Especially when night had fallen and he was outdoors. EvilIsHammy, indeed.
* Duke Red often does this while monologuing about his various [[MadScientist mad science]] schemes in various Creator/OsamuTezuka productions, especially ''Anime/{{Metropolis|2001}}''. It's actually rather effective there since he's supposed to be completely unhinged.
* ''Anime/MobileSuitGundamTheWitchFromMercury'': The normally coy and soft-spoken Lady Prospera lifts both hands high over her head as she describes her ultimate goal, the end result of a plan that's required over two decades to bring to this point. One gets the impression she's delighted to finally have someone to exposit to.
* Tenya Iida has this ''Manga/MyHeroAcademia''. He never seems to know what to do with his hands, so they always go in every known direction as he makes big speeches, which is often. Even Tsuyu points it out to him.
-->'''Tsuyu:''' Those are some interesting moves there.
* Mattis in the anime version of ''Literature/RonjaTheRobbersDaughter'' leaves no giant cow unmilked.
* ''Anime/StellviaOfTheUniverse'': The ''Stellvia'''s captain does an epic arm flourish when ordering to fire the last remaining laser shot that can save Earth from imminent destruction in the final episode.
* ''Anime/TengenToppaGurrenLagann'': Kamina makes a frequent habit of waving his arms wildly when delivering his bombastic speeches (aside from [[GivingSomeoneThePointerFinger his heaven-bound dramatic pointing]]), whether in a mecha or not, even disregarding that he's in the middle of a heated battle, completely ignoring the enemy's presence, much to the annoyance of everyone (save Simon, Nia, or Kittan).
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Comic Books]]
* ''ComicBook/AllFallDown'': IQ, card-carrying ham, has one of these moments in church.
* A common pose for {{Supervillain}}s, given EvilIsHammy. ComicBook/{{Darkseid}} and ComicBook/DoctorDoom in particular stand out, as the former's page image and the latter's illustration [[LargeHam/ComicBooks here]] show.
* ''ComicBook/{{Superman}}'':
** ComicBook/{{Supergirl}} does [[http://abload.de/img/supergirl28-40ejz9.jpg this]] in the beginning of ''ComicBook/RedDaughterOfKrypton'' right after pummeling ''ComicBook/{{Lobo}}''.
** In ''ComicBook/DemonSpawn'', villain Nightflame gestures her left arm skywards while she demands to know Supergirl's location.
** In ''ComicBook/SupergirlCosmicAdventuresInThe8thGrade'', Linda throws her hands up when she becomes fed up with her schoolmates' bullying.
** ''ComicBook/HowLuthorMetSuperboy'': Teen Lex Luthor gesticulates wildly when he ''thinks'' he has been slighted, raising his fist heavenwards and yelling Superboy will regret "betraying" him.
** In ''ComicBook/ReignOfDoomsday'', Cyborg Superman lifts his clenched fists upwards when he gleefully shouts Luthor has put in place "The '''Reign''' of the '''Doomsdays'''!"
** ''ComicBook/TheEarthwarSaga'': Villain Lightning Lord crosses his arms over his head, clenches his fists and delivers a loud, bombastic speech because his little sister dares to call him stupid.
* ''ComicBook/WonderWoman1987'': At first Ares has quite the flair for the dramatic, and doesn't seem capable of speech at all if he's not making large grandiose gestures. He becomes more subtle after his encounter with ComicBook/WonderWoman shows him the downsides of all-out war in the nuclear age. He can still ham it up on occasion but it's a sign he's up to something and the cheesiness is a misdirection.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Comic Strips]]
* In one ''ComicStrip/{{Zits}}'' comic, we get a long series of panels showing Jeremy "[[SucksAtDancing dance]]" by jumping up and down while pumping his fists. Hector says he looks like he's milking a kangaroo.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Fan Works]]
* ''Fanfic/AdviceAndTrust'': Downplayed example. In chapter 8, while having lunch with his friends, Touji is so frustrated with being not allowed seeing his girlfriend while she spends time in the hospital that he stretched his hands out and "nervously grasped at nothing".
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Films -- Animation]]
* ''WesternAnimation/{{Aladdin}}'': Jafar milks the giant cow quite a few times. Even on the cover art!
* In the AnimatedAdaptation of ''[[Recap/AsterixInBritain Asterix in Britain]]'', Julius Caesar is planning the invasion of Britain and calls on the gods for favorable winds to sail his fleet across the English Channel. On doing this trope, said winds promptly [[FailedAttemptAtDrama blow the map into his face]].
* ''WesternAnimation/AtlantisTheLostEmpire'': Vinny, being Italian, gestures with his hands whenever he speaks.
* In ''WesternAnimation/TheBlackCauldron'', the Horned King loves doing hand gestures during his gloatings or whenever he's excited.
* Pretty much every character in ''WesternAnimation/{{Foodfight}}'' uses dramatic arm movements while talking, likely in an attempt to make up for the lack of quality facial animation. Particularly notable when Dex twirls around once like a ballerina during TheReveal for no apparent reason.
* ''WesternAnimation/{{Frozen|2013}}'': During "Let It Go", Elsa makes a lot of grand gestures, some for FullContactMagic, some for kicks. She makes even bigger gestures during "Show Yourself" in the sequel.
* ''WesternAnimation/GuillermoDelTorosPinocchio'': [=WW2=] Italy setting withstanding, a lot of characters tend to make animated hand gestures, especially Sebastian the Cricket since his mouth is barely visible and his face has a more limited range of emotions and thus he makes up for it by gesturing a lot whenever he speaks to appear more lively and expressive.
* ''WesternAnimation/TheIncredibles1'':
** Bob's MeanBoss Mr. Huph makes a lot of animated hand gestures to emphasize his points. He even does the "Italian" hand gesture with both hands when he yells out "We're supposed to help ''our'' people!"
** Syndrome does this with hilarious results as he wears an ArmCannon shooting a beam of energy that suspends his target in mid-air.
--->'''Syndrome:''' I am '''Syndrome!''' Your '''nemesis!''' And... ''[throws his arms up, hurling Mr. Incredible out of sight]'' Oh, ''brilliant''.
** Later, Syndrome [[EngineeredHeroics stops a fuel truck falling on a woman and her child]]. Once again, he does his dramatic introduction, sending the fuel truck flying over his shoulder where it explodes in a ball of flame.
* Ralph Bashki's ''WesternAnimation/TheLordOfTheRings'' movie had Gandalf and Boromir doing this a lot. Gandalf does it, oh... ''so''... ''MUCH''! Complete with clutching fingers!
* ''WesternAnimation/{{Megamind}}'': The main character ''loves'' doing this with his arms spread wide open, including in the iconic '''PRESENTATION!''' scene.
* Creator/{{Disney}}'s ''WesternAnimation/{{Pinocchio}}'': LargeHam Honest John waves frantically and points with his walking stick at every opportunity. [[SissyVillain The wrist motions can make one wonder what the artists were going for here.]]
* ''WesternAnimation/MyLittlePonyEquestriaGirlsLegendOfEverfree'': Gaea Everfree makes lots of emphatic gestures, especially during her VillainSong. Sometimes it goes along with using her magic, but most often it's completely gratuitous.
* Madame Medusa does this right at the end of the "When You Wish Upon a Star" scene in ''WesternAnimation/OnceUponAStudio'', throwing up her arms in an over-the-top fashion like the LaughablyEvil LargeHam she is.
* ''WesternAnimation/TheSecretOfNIMH'':
** Mrs. Brisby does this at least once, mainly as a way for the animators to underline her anxiety.
** [[BigBad Jenner]] counts as well, at least during the scene where he shares his {{Evil Plan}} with Sullivan.
* In ''WesternAnimation/TurningRed'', 4*Town tends to do this a lot during their performances.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Films -- Live-Action]]
* A staple of silent film in general, [[EnforcedTrope thanks to the lack of dialogue to convey thoughts]].
** Rotwang in ''Film/{{Metropolis}}'', as seen in the page image. The evil robot Maria does this when rousing the workers to revolt.
** [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mQqiwIgTUHA#t=2m30s Dr. Mabuse]] in ''Film/DrMabuseTheGambler''. Played by the same actor who played Rotwang.
** ''Film/TheCurseOfQuonGwon'': The young wife does this in the scene where her nasty in-laws throw her out of the house.
* ''Film/{{The 39 Steps|1935}}''. In the scene where [[MistakenForSpecialGuest he's mistaken for a guest speaker]] while on the run from the police, Richard tries to do this during his RousingSpeech, only to quickly hide his hands because they're handcuffed together.
* Doc Brown of ''Franchise/BackToTheFuture'' wildly gesticulates whenever he speaks. In the Making Of, director Creator/RobertZemeckis said Creator/ChristopherLloyd was taking inspiration from the conductor in ''WesternAnimation/{{Fantasia}}'' (Leopold Stokowski), and described him as "conducting the world".
* ''Film/BattleBeyondTheStars''. Caymen of the Lambda Zone does this a lot, especially in his [[IHaveYouNowMyPretty introductory scene]]. He's a reptilian humanoid so his actor probably felt his [[RubberForeheadAlien facial features]] weren't [[ActionFigureSpeech articulate enough]], but it also fits his LargeHam nature.
* ''Film/BillionDollarBrain''. Midwinter at the conclusion of his MotiveRant, talking of how he wants to make his country STRONG! STRONG! STRONG!
* Since the actors of ''Film/BitterLake'' performed the entire movie in fursuits with largely immobile faces, they resorted to overacting the body language in a desperate attempt to sell the flat vocal acting.
* The movie of ''Film/{{Dune|1984}}'' is a WorldOfHam, so it's not surprising that there's a bit of this going on. Especially from Piter de Vries.
* Creator/JeremyIrons is having a helluva lot of fun with [[BigBad Profion]] in the first ''[[Film/DungeonsAndDragons2000 Dungeons & Dragons]]'' movie.
* In ''Music/{{Evita}}'', Eva Peron gesticulates during her speeches, especially the inaugural speech. It's likely a stage direction in the original musical as well. The real Eva Peron was actually a big fan of this gesture when she spoke, so it is, at least, historically accurate. Look up pictures of her speaking and you're sure to see her doing this gesture.
* ''Film/{{Guardians of the Galaxy|2014}}'': The Collector does this while delivering exposition on the MacGuffin, for which he is immediately mocked by Rocket.
* In ''Film/HarryPotterAndTheChamberOfSecrets'', young Tom Riddle does this.
* Parodied in ''Film/HerculesReturns'', an Australian GagDub of an Italian sword-and-sandal movie. Whenever the actor playing Hercules does this, the voice actor pretends he's about to burst into song. In fairness Hercules is usually appealing to the god Zeus at the time, so he at least has an excuse for gesturing upwards.
* During his incredible and hilarious speech Arthur Jensen of ''Film/{{Network}}'' milks the giant cow like a cross between Hitler and a television evangelist.
* ''Film/PiratesOfTheCaribbeanTheCurseOfTheBlackPearl'': It's a wonder the poor cow has any milk left after Captain Barbossa is finished with his "Begun by blood, by blood undone!" speech.
* ''Film/TheRightStuff''. The man introducing [[PunctuatedForEmphasis AMERICA'S... MERCURY... ASTRONAUTS!]]
* In ''Film/TheRoom2003'', Tommy Wiseau wildly throws his arms downward while uttering the film's most famous line, "You are tearing me apart, Lisa!"
* ''Franchise/StarWars'': Darth Vader wears a face mask, his range of body postures is limited to "loom", and his voice is intended to be machine-like (and was added in post-production anyway). About the only remaining means of expressing the character is hand gestures. Creator/DavidProwse (the man in the Darth Vader suit) rises to the challenge, milking the proverbial cow like he's getting a bonus for every hand gesture he makes.
* ''Film/HawkTheSlayer''. Voltan (played by an overacting Jack Palance) as he goes to meet the dark wizard.
-->'''Voltan:''' You promised me ALL, in retuuurn for myyyyyyy.... SWORD ARRRRMMM!
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Literature]]
* Referenced by name in ''Literature/HarrowTheNinth'':
-->Mercy threw her hands in the air, milking an invisible and gigantic cow in order to assuage her feelings.
* Creator/JohnMoore's humorous fantasy novel ''Literature/HeroicsForBeginners'' specifically cites this term, as seen in the page quote.
* Mrs. Shimerda apparently does this gesture in ''Literature/MyAntonia'' when Jake and Jim come to retrieve a harness they lent to the Shimerdas. They have a fight because Ambrosch doesn't want to give it back and actually tries to give them a shabby one.
-->''"Mrs. Shimerda threw her hands over her head and clutched as if she were going to pull down lightning. 'Law, law!' she shrieked after us. 'Law for knock my Ambrosch down!'"''
* In his autobiography, Creator/SpikeMilligan recalls auditioning for military talent shows during [=WW2=], and marveled at the eternal optimism of men with limited talent who genuinely believed their singing, comedy or acting talent would entertain and raise morale for their fellows. He was taken with the tendency of really bad singers, with the stage presence of planks of wood, to milk the giant cow to add pathos or dramatic intensity to whatever ballad they were murdering.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Live-Action TV]]
%%* Just pick any HenshinHero series from the Showa era, both heroes and villains love doing this.%% Generic example.
* ''Series/{{Angel}}'': In "[[Recap/AngelS03E05Fredless Fredless]]", Wesley does this while spoofing the melodrama of the Buffy/Angel romance.
-->'''Wesley:''' "Oh Buffy, I love you so much I almost forgot to brood!"
* From ''Series/TheBigBangTheory'':
-->'''Creator/WilWheaton:''' Do you really think we're going to fight?\
'''Sheldon:''' My fists are not up because [[LampshadeHanging I'm milking a giant invisible cow]].
* ''Series/BlakesSeven'' has a number of EvilIsHammy villains, so this trope comes up on several occasions.
** In "[[Recap/BlakesSevenS1E3CygnusAlpha Cygnus Alpha]]", Creator/BrianBlessed explodes after demonstrating this trope, though due to being {{Tele Frag}}ged rather than an overload of ham.
** In "[[Recap/BlakesSevenS3E8RumoursOfDeath Rumours of Death]]", a politician is rehearsing a grandiose speech in honor of President Servalan, with plenty of emphatic gestures.
--->'''Chesku:''' What do you think?\
'''Sula:''' I think it's crude and obvious.\
'''Chesku:''' [[IResembleThatRemark Thank you]].
** In the Season 3 finale "[[Recap/BlakesSevenS3E13Terminal Terminal]]", Servalan finally gets her hands on the ''Liberator'', so does an open palm version when ordering [[TimTaylorTechnology "Maximum Power!"]] The perils of excessive hamminess are then demonstrated when the ''Liberator'' tears itself apart and blows up.
** In "[[Recap/BlakesSevenS4E6Headhunter Headhunter]]", an android [[CranialProcessingUnit loses his head]] and starts [[ActionFigureSpeech gesturing dramatically to compensate]].
** As a MadScientist, Egrorian from "[[Recap/BlakesSevenS4E11Orbit Orbit]]" does the appropriate scenery chewing.
--->''"[[ThisCannotBe How? HOW?]] There's no ''way'' for them to escape!"''
* ''Series/{{The Boys|2019}}'': Homelander does this during his BastardlySpeech at the end of "[[Recap/TheBoysS01E04TheFemaleOfTheSpecies The Female of the Species]]". It's played [[BewareTheSuperman more for chills]] than LargeHam, as he's promising America's vengeance on the terrorists who brought down an airliner [[spoiler:when they actually died because of a bungled hostage rescue by Homelander and Queen Maeve]].
* ''Series/TheBrittasEmpire'': One of the CharacterTics of Gordon Brittas is to emphasise anything he says with exaggerated hand movements. {{Lampshaded}} in "Two Little Boys"; it is apparently possible to earn points for managing to get Brittas to do one of a series of specific gestures in the "I-Spy Brittas" game.
* ''Series/DoctorWho'':
** In "[[Recap/DoctorWhoS26E4Survival Survival]]", Creator/SylvesterMcCoy overclocks the [[LargeHam ham]], making a serious line sound very, very, ''very'' melodramatic:
--->''[arms are outstretched above him; starts gesturing with his eyes shut, and shaking wildly]''\
'''"IF WE FIGHT LIKE ANIMALS, WE''' '''''DIIIIIIIIIIIEE''''' '''LIKE ANIMALS!"'''
** The Eighth Doctor does it in [[Recap/DoctorWhoTVMTheTVMovie the TV movie]].
** Creator/MattSmith delves into this consistently as the Eleventh Doctor, though considering what type of character he's playing, it really, really works. Lampshaded in "[[Recap/DoctorWho50thASTheDayOfTheDoctor The Day of the Doctor]]":
--->'''War Doctor:''' Are you capable of speaking without flapping your hands about?\
'''Eleven:''' ''[[[IResembleThatRemark while flapping hands about]]]'' Yes! No...
** The Twelfth Doctor, as much of a ham as any of his predecessors, gets to do this in "[[Recap/DoctorWho2015CSTheHusbandsOfRiverSong The Husbands of River Song]]", while parodying the usual BiggerOnTheInside speech.
--->'''The Doctor:''' Oh... my... '''GOD!!!''' Ah... it's bigger... on the inside... than it is... on the outside? My entire understanding of physical space has been ''transformed!'' Three-dimensional Euclidean geometry has been torn up, thrown into the air, and snogged to death! My grasp of the universal constants of physical reality has been changed... forever. Sorry. ''[while literally and metaphorically LeaningOnTheFourthWall]'' I've always wanted to see that done properly.
* Baron Vladimir Harkonnen of ''Series/FrankHerbertsDune'', also played by [=Ian McNeice=]. [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ay3bCW3F3QU Just watch this.]]
* Parodied in ''Series/{{Glee}}''. Blaine's brother Cooper considers himself an accomplished dramatic actor, and he attempts to give a "masterclass" to the Glee club. He advocates for ignoring your scene partner and always pointing to the person you are talking to and shouting your lines.
* A ''Series/HarryAndPaul'' sketch ''[[Series/IClaudius I, Clavdivs]]'' has Claudius narrating how everyone in Rome is acting their sandals off. Cut to the Emperor posing in this position for a statue.
* Joe as a horoscope reader on ''Series/ImpracticalJokers'' eventually devolved into cartwheels and somersaults.
* ''Series/KamenRiderBuild'': The Prime Ministers of Seito and Hokuto are well-known for ChewingTheScenery because the ArtifactOfDoom made them into CardCarryingVillain[=s=]. Acting civil would be more conductive to their plans, but they simply can't stop themselves from putting on the grand gestures and ObliviouslyEvil speeches. It doesn't make them any less dangerous because they're still backed up by armies and states.
* In ''Franchise/PowerRangers'', suited characters often kick the wild gesturing up. It's especially noticeable when still suited characters act outside a fight scene (when figuring out a device, etc.). In the early years, these gestures would be accompanied [[MundaneMadeAwesome by the same swishing-through-air sound]] as martial arts strikes.
* ''Series/{{Rome}}'': The Forum newsreader played by [=Ian McNeice=] punctuates his [[LargeHam hammy]] news bulletins with stylized gestures and poses that were actually used by professional speakers and politicians at the time. At one point Lucius Vorenus tries to use them during his brief attempt at politics but completely fails to make them seem impressive.
* ''Franchise/StarTrek'':
** Along with his oddly placed vocal pauses and emphasis on unusual syllables, this is a key element to the Creator/WilliamShatner acting style, famously perfected as Captain Kirk on ''Series/StarTrekTheOriginalSeries''. Indeed, one FilkSong ("Star Trek Rhapsody") even name-checks it:
--->'''[=McCoy=]:''' [[ImADoctorNotAPlaceholder I'm a doctor!]]\
'''Kirk:''' [[ImADoctorNotAPlaceholder ...not an actor.]]\
'''[=McCoy=]:''' Not a ''[[TakeThat milkman]]''!\
'''Kirk:''' What does ''that'' mean?\
'''[=McCoy=]:''' And I'm sorry, HesDeadJim.
** This is quite common in ''[[Series/StarTrekTheOriginalSeries The Original Series]]'' in general. Many of the actors were originally trained for the stage, where overemphasized actions were expected; on screen, this translated to hokey action scenes and sometimes hilariously overdone body language.
** Randy Spears does this while playing Captain Quirk in the ''Sex Trek'' parodies.
--->''"I'm losing my ship! I'm losing my crew! And my ability to act!"''
** The Doctor in ''Series/StarTrekVoyager'' does this on occasion, as he's the hammiest character on the ship. It's also seen in guest stars who aren't used to playing RubberForeheadAliens and therefore [[ActionFigureSpeech feel they need to gesture more to compensate]].
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Music Videos]]
* Music/ShirleyBassey does this every time a song has a big finish. And most of her numbers have big finishes.
%%* Music/MaryJBlige.
* The video for Music/{{Disturbed}}'s "Indestructible" uses this several times. Hell, every Disturbed video contains a little of this, as do the live shows. The singer is [[LargeHam one great big ham]].
* Music/{{Gackt}} must have a clause in his contract that requires him to do this at least once per [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1B4ylyRLu-Q music video]] and [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v12i6vJj988 stage performance]].
* Creator/KevinHart mocked R&B singers' tendencies to do this when giving "tips" on how to be a singer:
-->'''Kevin:''' All you need to know how to do is open your hands, close em, and point.
* If [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jM4CDLmDx_Y the video for "Ten Thousand Strong"]] by Music/IcedEarth video is any indication, Ripper Owens is a fan of this move.
* The director for the MusicVideo to Music/EltonJohn's song "I Want Love" accused Creator/RobertDowneyJr of doing just this. Her solution? Taping his hands in his pockets to remind him that understatement worked more for this concept (the idea was just Downey walking and lip-synching to the song in a cold 'institutional' building). Works, too.
* When Music/TomJones is not doing a finger snap with the hand not holding the microphone, you bet it's [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hpsGh4Amt44 a grand]] [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UxJCKPsj08Q gesture]].
* Vocalist and LargeHam Kamijo has always been [[ChewingTheScenery partial to a nice piece of the stage]], but he takes his wild dramatic gesturing up a notch in the last couple of minutes of the music video for Music/{{Versailles}}' [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ne423XWtjf4 "Ascendead Master"]]. The rest of the band join in as well--if they can get away with taking their hand away from their instrument for a minute, they do just that and make it worth it.
* Music/KingDiamond [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8tl-N9FJMpY shows us how it's done]].
* Music/{{Sabaton}} frontman Joakim Broden does this all the time during shows. [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CgmzlvUAB2w Example from their 09/19/2016 performance in Atlanta, GA.]]
* Alas, Music/BonnieTyler's acting ability is inversely proportional to her singing, as witnessed in her plea for help in the video for [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bWcASV2sey0 "Holding out for a Hero"]].
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Radio]]
* Manic sketch show ''Radio/TheBurkissWay'' skewered TheSeventies TV presenter Doctor Jonathan Miller, a RenaissanceMan who at one time appeared to be the BBC's go-to presenter for ''anything'' scientific or cultural. Miller's TV work was visually punctuated with lots of flamboyant hand gestures including at least an udder inspection of the giant cow when he got ''really'' into his subject. Leading to the classic line;
-->Presented by Dr. Jonathan Miller, the only man whose hands are too loud for the deaf.

[[folder:Software]]
* Microsoft 3D Movie Maker: Because of the fairly cartoonish style, many of the actions are MilkingTheGiantCow. The limitations of the graphics technology at the time play a part in this too. For instance, since there was no way to animate a person convincingly speaking over recorded dialogue, the action for talking was for the characters to lean forward, nod their heads, and wave their arms around.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Theatre]]
%%* In tradition Japanese noh theatre the main (usually) actor will pause in exaggeration pose for dramatic effect.%% Generic example
* In the Creator/ReducedShakespeareCompany play ''The Complete History of America (abridged)'', Reed tries to mime steering a car, but his gestures are off enough that Austin tells him, "Stop milking that cow!"
* This is pervasive enough that Creator/WilliamShakespeare ranted about it in a CharacterFilibuster in ''Theatre/{{Hamlet}}''. Yes, [[JustForFun/TheZerothLawOfTropeExamples Shakespeare troped it first]].
-->''Nor do not saw the air too much with your hand, thus; but use all gently...''
:In the same dialogue: [-Be not too tame neither:... ''[but]'' [[Administrivia/TropesAreTools suit the action to the word, the word to the action]]; with this special o'erstep not the modesty of nature: for any thing so overdone is from the purpose of playing, whose end ''[is to hold]'' the mirror up to nature... Now this overdone, or come tardy off, though it make the unskilful laugh, cannot but make the judicious grieve... O, there be players that I have seen play, and heard others praise... ''[that]'' have [[LargeHam so strutted and bellowed]] that I have thought some of nature's journeymen had made men and not made them well, they [[TakeThat imitated humanity so abominably]].-]
* In Andrew Lloyd Webber's ''Theatre/ThePhantomOfTheOpera'', depending on the actor (although this is usually done by the actors) Erik (The Phantom) does this so often he could be considered the Giant Cow Dairy Farmer.
* In ''Theatre/ThePlayThatGoesWrong'', some of the cast of ''The Murder at Havisham Manor'' have a tendency to indulge in this, with Max and Sandra being the worst offenders.
* Subtly lampshaded in ''Theatre/{{RENT}}''; when Maureen is doing her protest, she raises her arms dramatically--but she's ''actually'' milking a cow when she does it.
-->''"And I lowered myself beneath her giant udder... and sucked the sweetest milk I have ever tasted."''
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Video Games]]
* Justified trope for games that use a SuperDeformed art style -- since the character's face is often just a very tiny rectangle with even tinier dots for eyes, extremely exaggerated body language is necessary to get the emotion across. Even motion capture has not escaped this trope. Given the limits of technology, it's not (yet) possible for mo-cap to pick up subtle gestures and facial expressions, so many actors are [[GoingThroughTheMotions encouraged to unleash]] their inner LargeHam.
* Done in early-90s {{Adventure Game}}s of the [[PointAndClick point-and-click]] variety. The graphics were just advanced enough to animate body movements to go along with the MouthFlaps, which can get tiresome when the player had the option of full audio in games like ''VideoGame/GabrielKnight'', since the wild gesturing (on a loop) was a lot less noticeable in the time it takes to simply read the dialogue on-screen.

* ''VideoGame/AfterTheWar'': Both Dr. Z and Holeman seems to do this a lot. They're both hams after all.
* In ''VideoGame/ApeEscape 3'', Specter and Dr. Tomoki have a tendency to do this in FMV cutscenes, making them look like mad puppets.
* Similarly, the Joy gesture from ''VideoGame/{{Bloodborne}}'' has you raising your both hands in happiness.
* In ''VideoGame/CastlevaniaLordsOfShadow'', the Lord of the Necromancers spends five minutes pacing around Gabriel and communicating entirely through his hands during his MotiveRant, possibly because his face isn't visible.
* Because player characters in ''VideoGame/DarkSouls'' may be covered in a wide variety of armors, many of which obscure the face, the gestures made to communicate with others players tend to be extremely broad and flamboyant. The most famous is one exclusive to members of the Warriors of Sunlight called "Praise the Sun", where you raise your arms above your head in a "V" shape.
* The animation for the "Rally" combat action in ''VideoGame/DragonAgeOrigins'' is this; Loghain, already a LargeHam, is particularly fond of this action. In [[VideoGame/DragonAgeII the sequel]], loose cannon party member Anders does this while casting [[KillItWithFire Firestorm]], accompanied with "MY MAGIC WILL DESTROY YOU!" or wordless screams of rage for maximum [[LargeHam ham potential]].
* Having mo-capped cutscenes, the characters in ''VideoGame/FaustTheSevenGamesOfTheSoul'' are really prone to this, but it's especially noticeable with Mephisto, whose frantic arm movements and occasional twirling ''really'' don't match his voice actor's calm, suave delivery.
* Cloud's [[CharacterTic signature shrug]] in ''VideoGame/FinalFantasyVII'' involves way too much air-clutching for a gesture that's supposed to suggest ''not caring'' -- which is the joke. He does the same gesture in a trailer for ''VideoGame/FinalFantasyVIIRemake'', though it's toned down (not by much).
* In the in-game cutscenes in ''VideoGame/HeroesOfMightAndMagicV'', the characters have a very small pool of body language expressions, almost all of which are highly overblown and [[LargeHam Hammy]].
* ''Franchise/KingdomHearts'':
** Xehanort, the franchise BigBad, tends to over-exaggerate with his hands throughout the series, but his earliest incarnation as [[VideoGame/KingdomHeartsBirthBySleep Master Xehanort]] takes milking the giant cow ([[ChewingTheScenery of]] '''[[LargeHam darkness!]]''') to a fine art. The man is seemingly unable to make speeches without making clutching/grasping motions of some sort.
** Justified with his Nobody counterpart, Xemnas. As Nobodies are (in theory) incapable of emotion, Xemnas uses this exaggerated gestures as part of his overall ColdHam persona.
* ''Franchise/TheLegendOfZelda'':
** ''VideoGame/TheLegendOfZeldaCDIGames'': The cut scenes: "Gee, it sure is boring around here!"
** Ghirahim, the main villain of ''VideoGame/TheLegendOfZeldaSkywardSword'', does this to keep in line with his [[EvilIsHammy FABULOUS]] persona while expressing his anger over Zelda being snatched from his grasp.
* ''VideoGame/MetalGear'':
** Old Snake in ''VideoGame/MetalGearSolid4GunsOfThePatriots'', complete with SkywardScream. "liquiiid!" Also, [[LargeHam Liquid Snake]] in [[VideoGame/MetalGearSolid The Twin Snakes]]. He seems to have graduated top of his class from the [[Creator/WilliamShatner William Shatner School of Acting]]. Also from Metal Gear Solid 4 is Liquid Ocelot, who really enjoys clenching his fist whenever he can.
** Skull Face in ''VideoGame/MetalGearSolidV'', being EvilIsHammy incarnate, is also a profligate user of this trope. When introducing the Sahelanthropus as he stands in the palm of its hand he cheerfully flourishes his arms in the manner of a game show host's lovely assistant showing off the fabulous prizes. Bonus points for using the same tone of voice in which the host himself might say "a brand new car!"
* ''VideoGame/MonkeyIsland'': Stan the Salesman parodies this by flailing his arms wildly no matter what he's saying. It also serves to draw attention to his UnmovingPlaid jacket, making it even more amusing.
* [[GangBangers Team Skull members]] in ''VideoGame/PokemonSunAndMoon'' often gesture wildly when walking or speaking.
* In ''VideoGame/RaidouKuzunohaVsTheSoullessArmy'' and ''VideoGame/RaidouKuzunohaVsKingAbaddon'', [[LargeHam Dr.]] [[MadScientist Victor]] is made incredibly awesome by his abuse of this.
* In ''VideoGame/SilentHill3'', Vincent is never able to keep his hands still while talking.
* Megumi Kitaniji of ''VideoGame/TheWorldEndsWithYou'' has something of a flair for this, as seen in two of [[http://www.spriters-resource.com/resources/sheets/47/50297.png his dialogue sprites]]. [[spoiler:Turns out later he's not just gesturing, he's checking the timer on his palm, just like the one the Players have.]]
* ''VideoGame/{{Xenosaga}}'': Virgil is seen doing this in Episode One when lecturing about the expendability of realians.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Visual Novels]]
* The lawyers on the stand of ''VisualNovel/AceAttorney'' series are entirely animated in dramatic gestures -- including on the cover art; made all the more hilarious in various "[[GagDub Phoenix Wrong]]" gag dubs.[[note]] This is actually how court cases are handled in Japan. [[RealityIsUnrealistic Guess real life really ''is'' stranger than fiction, huh.]][[/note]]
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Web Animation]]
* ''WebAnimation/FreedomToons'': UsefulNotes/BernieSanders is often portrayed as waving his hands around with every word he says; it also sometimes extends to his supporters.
* ''WebAnimation/HomestarRunner'': Rather Dashing does this in the ''Peasant's Quest'' movie trailer.
* ''WebAnimation/TIEFighter'': Commander Gaunt throws his arm forward while commanding the crew of the Star Destroyer and other capital ships to open fire on the Rebel fleet.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Webcomics]]
* Characters in ''Webcomic/EightBitTheater'' do this occasionally to represent despair, surprise, or just to emphasize a point. Of course, it's because ''Webcomic/EightBitTheater'' is a SpriteComic of an 8-bit game, and thus has few sprites to express any emotion. Occasionally, it's lampshaded. ("Put your hands down!")
* The court messenger Masahiro from ''Webcomic/BeneathTheClouds'' is quite fond of this. It ends badly for him.
* Actual giant cows are involved in ''Webcomic/BotchedSpot'''s [[http://botchedspot.com/2012/10/19/what-i-think-about-whenever-i-see-rybacks-entrance/ explanation]] of {{Wrestling/Ryback}}'s entrance.
* Although not new, genuflexing is on the rise in ''Webcomic/{{Housepets}}'' It's happened twice in the arc "Jungle Fever"; one by Fido in reaction to Sabrina explaining the return of a foreign old flame, and one by Maxwell when he's begging Kevin to help him beef up to impress Grape.
* In ''Webcomic/MyLifeAsABackgroundSlytherin'', Severus Snape constantly makes over-the-top poses and gestures, with his hands above his head.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Web Original]]
* ''WebOriginal/ProtectorsOfThePlotContinuum'': Agent Isaiah does this in the nightmare where he turns into a MartyStu.
* In Unicode emoticon form: ლ(ಠ益ಠლ)
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Web Videos]]
* ''WebVideo/DrHorriblesSingAlongBlog'': Captain Hammer does this in [[IncomingHam his first scene]], while standing on top of a moving van.
* Creator/MasakoX, an anime reviewer at Website/ChannelAwesome, does this so often that [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ks8hcDdFZIw&feature=sub there's a dance]].
* Music/DoctorSteel combines this with a SkywardScream in ''The Dr. Steel Show'' Episode 1.
* True crime/horror youtuber WebVideo/MrBallen is constantly gesticulating all over the place whenever he talks to the camera.
* According to Creator/{{Nigahiga}}, hand motions accompanied with ClusterFBomb are the first lesson to being Gangster.
* When WebVideo/TheNostalgiaCritic expresses his displeasure with Creator/JohnTravolta's [[LargeHam hammy acting]] in ''Film/BattlefieldEarth'', Terl (played by [[WebVideo/TheSpoonyExperiment Spoony]]) interrupts the review to take umbrage not with the Critic being mad at his performance, but with the ''way'' he expressed his anger. Terl suggests that the Critic ''show'' him how angry he is through exaggerated grimacing and hand gestures, which does its job of making the Critic angry... at Terl for wasting his time and making him look stupid.
* Rufus Talltales in ''WebVideo/WorldsGreatestAdventures'' is prone to it when boasting of his discoveries.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Western Animation]]
* ''WesternAnimation/AvatarTheLastAirbender'': [[Characters/AvatarTheLastAirbenderKatara Katara]], while mocking Sokka for his big ears, decides it is necessary to mime "elephant ears" using her hands, along with pointing dramatically as if she has an [[VisualNovel/AceAttorney objection]]. Apparently, this is a genetic trait: later, in season two, Sokka gets a little... intense while cheering and booing during the earthbending tournament.
* ''WesternAnimation/{{Canhead}}'': The little claymation protagonist, who is trekking through the desert on foot, dramatically raises his hands to the sky after opening up his knapsack for food and finding nothing but worms, and the bottom missing from the knapsack.
* In the crossover episode of ''WesternAnimation/CaptainNTheGameMaster'' and ''WesternAnimation/TheLegendOfZelda1989'', everyone celebrates by ''lifting their arms up and down''.
* ''WesternAnimation/FilmationsGhostbusters'': Prime Evil did this pretty much all the time.
* In ''WesternAnimation/TheGrimAdventuresOfBillyAndMandy'', Grim does a 3-way combination of this, a BigNo, and a SkywardScream after Billy tells him that he flushed Li'l Porkchop down the toilet.
* Daffy Duck in "The Great Piggybank Robbery" and other ''WesternAnimation/LooneyTunes'' cartoons.
* ''WesternAnimation/MyLittlePonyFriendshipIsMagic'':
** [[Characters/FriendshipIsMagicRarity Rarity]] is prone to this, as per her LargeHam tendencies.
** Parodied in "Hearts and Hooves Day": when Apple Bloom gets overexcited during an ImagineSpot, [[MemeticMutation her forelegs start flailing all over the place, much to the confusion of her friends.]]
** In "Slice of Life", Dr. Whooves flails his hooves in the air when his "flameless fireworks" go off with ThePowerOfLove.
* Hexadecimal in ''WesternAnimation/ReBoot'' very often, though it's justified: her mask changes off-screen with every swipe of her hand.
* In ''WesternAnimation/TheVentureBrothers'', the resident cow-milker is Dr. Orpheus; he'll gesture wildly [[MundaneMadeAwesome even if saying rather mundane things]]. Phantom Limb does it too, although he has to tell people he's doing it because his arms and hands are invisible.
-->'''Phantom Limb:''' I'm wringing my hands... MENACINGLY!
* ''WesternAnimation/{{Young Justice|2010}}''. Mal Duncan hamming it up as Guardian to distract Despero; he does this trope while [[ByThePowerOfGrayskull summoning up his non-existent powers]].
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Real Life]]
* In UsefulNotes/NaziGermany, UsefulNotes/AdolfHitler [[TruthInTelevision had a tendency to do this while giving speeches]]. His Website/IMDb page lists "dramatic hand gestures" under [[http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0386944/bio#trademark trademarks]].
** UsefulNotes/JosephGoebbels as well, more in the [[https://youtu.be/gSXbKgKXcj0 "finger-wagging"]] department.
* It was very common to gesticulate like that in Central European rhetoric at the time; speeches from people opposed to Hitler feature similar gesturing (though much less froth-mouthed screaming).
* This is actually a good way to get over shyness during a speech or public performance to an extent (though not so much that you look silly; everything in moderation).
* Some autistics who have a difficult time [[PerpetualExpression showing emotion with their face]] may resort to this to convey their emotions to others.
* Michele Bachmann [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1fRxO_Yx99I#t=6m14s in her response to the 2011 State of the Union address]].
* MMA fighter Anderson Silva has a tendency to do this at extremely emotional moments.
* When the terms of the Arab Maghreb Union (a common market treaty between Mauritania, Morocco, Tunisia, Algeria, and Libya) were being read out, UsefulNotes/MuammarGaddafi [[http://news.google.com/newspapers?id=ozNAAAAAIBAJ&sjid=O1kMAAAAIBAJ&pg=5058,5224658&dq=gaddafi+tunisia&hl=en started waving his fists in the air]] with a smile (he was known for having been particularly ''obsessed'' with a Pan-Arabian/Pan-African union).
* Valdis Pelšs, the host to the popular Russian game show ''Ugadai Melodiyu'' (''Guess the Melody'') is known for waving his hands around whenever a song was playing. Russian comedians ''loved'' to poke fun at him for that. One joke involves a cop unsuccessfully trying to handcuff him while a song is playing.
* Taking a bow at the end of the [[TearJerker gutwrenching tragedy]] ''Theatre/{{Pagliacci}}'' at the Metropolitan Opera, Creator/EnricoCaruso once grabbed the tassels on the Great Gold Curtain and did this, throwing some MoodDissonance in there. The audience thought it was cute. Some newspaper critics admonished him the next day for not being dignified enough.
* One column by political sketchwriter Matthew Parris was a study of the different gestures that Paddy Ashdown (then the leader of the Liberal Democrats) made whilst giving a speech. This included the ''dead spider'': holding one hand aloft, upturned, as if grasping a pearl of great price.
* UsefulNotes/DonaldTrump's signature hand gesture during speeches has been called "playing the invisible accordion[=/=]concertina": he holds both hands out in front of him, like he's about to applaud, but then moves them away from each other, then back towards each other, and repeats this over and over. It's also been noted as one of the many Trump tics that Florida governor Ron [=DeSantis=] has adopted in his public appearances.
