4	The duenna (or chaperone) is a StockCharacter whose main purpose is to provide an obstacle to the male LoveInterest. Almost always a comedy character, she is older than her charge and intent on protecting her from the debauched hordes of unmarried men who (according to the chaperone) are waiting around every corner. Said young ladies are as anxious to get rid of her as her suitors. May also be an OldRetainer.

6	Usually a devout older woman [[EverythingTryingToKillYou who may be very naive about the world]], though a common variation is one who has had a very eventful life, [[AllMenArePerverts and thus knows exactly what to expect from young men]]. She may be an aunt, a servant, or even an elder sister.

8	Strictly speaking, a close male relative could chaperone, but a female chaperone was preferred; it was thought that a woman would be more attentive in ensuring a young lady's propriety.

10	Chaperoning was important to protect a young woman's reputation. A single unchaperoned carriage ride with a gentleman in a closed carriage could turn a young woman into "spoiled goods", regardless of whether they touched. In addition to watching the young woman, the chaperone gave advice on protecting her reputation (e.g. never dance more than once with the same man at a ball) and on securing the best marriage proposal.

12	Double standards were in effect. A woman could never be alone with a man until marriage, but the male suitors were allowed to have "sown their wild oats" by cavorting in brothels.
