->''Major Alexander Phinn, an ancestor of mine,\
Was captured by the enemy, across the River Rhine.\
The captain of the firing squad asked:\
"Is there a last request?"\
My Uncle Alex smiled and said:\
"Yes please -- a bulletproof vest!"''
-->-- '''Gervase Phinn''', ''It Takes One to Know One''

Something a condemned person requests right before they die. The opportunity may be offered to you by the executioner on DeathRow out of [[PetTheDog personal kindness]] or [[GoodOldWays cultural tradition]].

Common requests include:
* Something that can be used to pull off a [[SoLongSuckers surprise escape]]
* The opportunity to say something that will [[ClearMyName exonerate oneself]] of ones supposed crime -- bonus points if it also [[ThePerryMasonMethod exposes the real perpetrator]]
* Something that can be used to [[ThanatosGambit achieve some post-mortem goal]]
* Something that will take time to deliver, [[HoldingTheFloor delaying matters]] while one waits for rescue or an escape opportunity
* A chance for a prisoner to convince ones captors that [[ScheherezadeGambit one worth keeping alive]]
* An opportunity to [[AnyLastWords to make a final public statement]]
* [[PrisonersLastMeal A last meal]]
* [[OneLastSmoke One last moment of personal indulgence]]
* [[GetItOverWith A quick death]]
* [[AintTooProudToBeg Abject pleading to be spared]] (usually [[PlayedForLaughs in comedic situations]])

A character can also transfer your responsibilities to someone else with your last breath. A condemned person asking someone to [[TakeCareOfTheKids take care of their own family]], [[BringNewsBack deliver a message]], [[BestServedCold avenge them]], or generally [[TakeUpMySword keep up the good fight]] is almost playing low though, as a deathbed promise, even by request, is very hard to refuse and nearly [[IGaveMyWord unbreakable]] -- even if [[WhatYouAreInTheDark no one would ever know]]. (Though if one is DyingAsYourself, you may have no choice.) It can even be done with ones enemies if they accept a DyingTruce. This can be made especially touching with added PietaPlagiarism, or even CradlingYourKill.

If someone is dying very slowly, as of cancer, one can, in fact, make it a period before death; for instance, at the last visit to the hospital, even if death occurs a week later. Requests made by ghosts and other undead qualify only if undeath is ending quickly.

Occasionally a character will pretend to be at death's door, in order to get someone to agree to something; most often played for comedy.

!!As this is a {{Death Trope|s}}, [[Administrivia/SpoilersOff unmarked spoilers abound]]. [[Administrivia/YouHaveBeenWarned Beware]].

* A famous campaign for Tombstone pizza [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vKspf06XuaQ (here's one example)]] featured a man (always the same one) about to be executed by some method; his executioner asked him "What do you want on your tombstone?" to which he'd reply "Pepperoni and cheese" or some other pizza topping. The executioner always complied.
* In Brazil, a sweets brand named "Mirabel" had an ad featuring a man sentenced to death. As his last request, he asked "Que as balas sejam Mirabel." Everyone laughed. "Bala" can mean either "sweet" (noun) or "bullet". The man asked that the bullets/sweets were Mirabels.
* The Creator/AlecBaldwin Capital One credit card ad, where Baldwin starts out having the guy wipe out his flight record, then has him press a button that gets him knocked out, so Baldwin can escape.
* An old man dying in a small Italian village requests honey fresh from the hive, grapes plucked from the vine, and a glass of beer. The youngest member of the family has to run off and get all these, and so can't resist swigging down the nice cold beer. He then hands the empty glass to the priest who's come to give the last rites, so he'll be blamed.
* A Advertising/WilkinsCoffee commercial had Wilkins asking this to [[ButtMonkey Wontkins]] when he's strapped to an electric chair.
-->'''Wilkins:''' Any last requests, like for a cup of Wilkins Coffee?\
'''Wontkins:''' No!\
'''Wilkins:''' You don't drink Wilkins?\
'''Wontkins:''' No!\

She responds by [[PayEvilUntoEvil slashing him again and walking away]] (and [[AssholeVictim he completely deserved it]], [[spoiler:as he had earlier murdered [[ChivalrousPervert Lubbock]]]]). Despite this, Izou is horrified by Akame's lack of respect in his final moments, and his last words are full of shock.

** When Rukia is about to be executed, she asks Head Captain Yamamoto to spare her friends, who attempted to save her, and let them go home. Lelouch, however, [[PayEvilUntoEvil would prefer that Diethard bleed to death instead and refuses him]], coldly stating that a SmugSnake like him merely isn't worth the effort.
* Gren from ''Anime/CowboyBebop''. He knows he'll be dead by before the end of the episode, so he asks Spike to fulfill his dying wish by towing his ship into orbit and letting him float off in the direction of Titan, the moon he wished to see one last time.
-->'''Gren:''' I won't be able to make it anyway. I figure dying on the way there would be the next best thing.
* ''Anime/CrossAnge'': Empress Sophia begs her daughter [[FallenPrincess Angelise]], who has been exposed as a [[AntiMagic Norma]], to survive for her sake. 73* ''Literature/{{Durarara}}'': In the conclusion, [[spoiler:Izaya wakes up in a vehicle with Kine and Manami after nearly being killed. Kine informs Izaya he only has a fifty-fifty chance of living and that they're taking him to see an underground doctor. Izaya tells him it's fine as long as he's not in the city as he doesn’t want Shizuo to be anywhere near his deathbed]]. Kai says he knows it will be meaningless if he wins because he would die anyway, but that he needs to settle the score and go out fighting. Unfortunately, Kai humiliates himself because his depression and panic over "dying" causes him to swing his sword around like a child throwing a tantrum instead of like a trained swordsman, allowing Nagasumi to beat him down easily. He's humiliated again when everybody finds out he isn't dying.
* In ''Manga/{{Naruto}}'', there are a few.
** Zabuza's last request is for Kakashi to bring him over to Haku's body.

* At the end of the Carnage ''ComicBook/{{Axis}}'' tie-in comic, when Carnage is about to perform a HeroicSacrifice to stop a bomb from destroying everything, he makes ComicBook/SpiderMan promise him one thing:

* A RunningGag in ''ComicBook/AlanFord''; when a character is about to get shot/executed and is asked if he has any last words, only to give sarcastic answers, including:

* ''ComicStrip/USAcres'': [[http://garfield.com/us-acres/2012-11-10 Booker asks if a worm has "any last requests"]] and the worm suggests "Melancholy Baby".
* Often played for laughs in ''ComicStrip/TheWizardOfId''. For example, in one Sunday strip, Turnkey [[PrisonersLastMeal asks a condemned prisoner what he wants to eat before he's hanged]]; "a helium sandwich", says the guy. In another strip, Turnkey tells spook that a hoagie about twenty feet long is for "Dirty Dirk", who hangs tomorrow, although the sandwich will clearly take a week to eat.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Fairy Tales]]
* In ''Literature/{{Donkeyskin}}'', ''[[https://www.surlalunefairytales.com/book.php?id=33&tale=1184 All Kinds Of Fur]]'', ''[[https://www.surlalunefairytales.com/book.php?id=62&tale=1936 The She-Bear]]'', and many of their variants, the dying queen asks the king never to marry a woman not so beautiful as she is, and it turns out only their daughter qualifies. Alternatively, as in ''[[http://www.sacred-texts.com/neu/celt/pt1/pt118.htm The King Who Wished to Marry His Own Daughter]]'', it's to one who can not wear an article of her clothing.
* In Creator/AndrewLang's ''[[http://www.online-literature.com/andrew_lang/green-fairy-book/22/ Prince Fickle and Fair Helena]]'', the titular prince's father, on his deathbed, requests that his son marry a certain princess. Though the prince is already betrothed to Fair Helena, his grief over the death of his father makes him forget this, and he agrees.
* In many fairy tales, if a magical animal owned by the heroine is to be killed (usually by a jealous parent), the animal will beg the protagonist to perform some ritual with a part of their body, usually along the lines of burying their heart in a certain location, or eating an odd part of the flesh. Doing this will give the protagonist some good fortune, either with an ability of some sort, or (in the case of burying a body part) causing something like a magic tree to spring up.
* In ''Literature/TheBlackThiefAndTheKnightOfTheGlen'', the queen has the king promise to keep their three sons in a tower, to keep them safe from a WickedStepmother. The stepmother manages to talk him into bringing them back.
-->''I am now going to leave you, and as you are young and in your prime, of course after my death you will marry again. Now all the request I ask of you is that you will build a tower in an island in the sea, wherein you will keep your three sons until they are come of age and fit to do for themselves; so that they may not be under the power or jurisdiction of any other woman. Neglect not to give them education suitable to their birth, and let them be trained up to every exercise and pastime requisite for king's sons to learn. This is all I have to say, so farewell.''
* Subverted in the Creator/AsbjornsenAndMoe fairy tale ''[[http://legendsofthenorth.blogspot.com/2017/10/little-frick-and-fiddle.html Frik with the fiddle]]''. Our hero is about to be hanged, sitting on a ladder with the noose around his neck. His last request is to play a tune on his fiddle. He is saved because the fiddle is magic and gets everyone who listens to get up and dance, and ''nobody'' can deny him the first thing he asks for.
* In ''Literature/TheTinderBox'', the protagonist is able to summon three powerful dogs to do his bidding by striking the eponymous tinder box. When the king and queen find out that he's used the dogs to spirit away their daughter, they arrest him and sentence him to death. At his execution, the man's last request is to be allowed OneLastSmoke. The king and queen agree, he strikes his tinder box...
* In ''The Green King'', the king promises the dying queen, on her request, not to refuse their daughter what she asks for. All the WickedStepmother has to do to get the king to marry her is persuade the daughter to ask.
* In an Icelandic fairy tale, the queen asks the king to promise to marry a great princess, someone accustomed to courts, so she would not have her head turned by becoming queen. Unfortunately, when the king's men seek a new bride for him, they are taken in by a woman's claim to be a princess in exile.
* In ''Literature/TheDiscreetPrincess'', Rich-Craft's last request is for his PrinceCharming brother to marry the titular princess and then kill her as soon as possible.

[[folder:Fan Works]]
* ''Roleplay/DCNation'': When it seemed that Roy Harper wasn't going to survive the Olympics, he had three. The most serious one was asking his family (Titans and Arrows) to raise Lian. Several chapters later, when Shirou meets Tiffania, he remembers and honors the request.
* In ''[[Fanfic/YuGiOhTheThousandYearDoor Yu-Gi-Oh! The Thousand Year Door Redux]]''. Andy, Stan, and Francesca encounter the Shadow Queen after she finds out they know most of her backstory. She agrees to tell them how she gained her power and immortality (the part they don't know), but it counts as their last request should they be defeated. [[spoiler:She changes her mind about that later, after Andy's defeat, saying they'll get three days to live and conjugal visits if they want; likely, however, this change of heart is due to her desire to intimidate her subjects by executing her enemies publicly when she's ready to address them in person.]]
* ''The Last Kiss Goodbye'' (a ''Series/StarTrekVoyager'' uber fic). While being held at gunpoint by notorious hitman The Bermanator, Hollywood private eye Jane Kates requests this trope as it's a standard Hollywood cliche. The beautiful DamselInDistress assumes it will be a LastKiss, and is not amused when Kates [[MustHaveCaffeine wants a hot cup of coffee]] instead. Which she then [[AHandfulForAnEye throws in the Bermanator's face]].
* ''Fanfic/WhiteSheepRWBY'': This is why the story even happens. Nicholas Arc got captured by Salem. Right before she was about to kill him, Nicholas asked if she would fulfill a last request. Salem decided to humor him and asked what it was. Nicholas asked for a ''booty call''. She granted said request... and enjoyed it so much that she refrained from killing him and kept granting it. This eventually resulted in pregnancy, which astounded Salem because she didn't think she could even have children as a Grimm hybrid.
* ''Fanfic/OneDayAtATimeNyame'': In the previous timeline, Damian Wayne's last request to his older brother Jason Todd was to let him remain dead and to not revive him using the Lazarus Pit. Jason ultimately didn't have the heart to refuse him, especially since he was still dealing with the effects of his own revival via Lazarus Pit over a decade prior.
* ''Fanfic/OneMoreTrigger'': [[spoiler:Noelle, in her execution chamber,]] gets a jacket to wear, so she won't be cold, and [[PrisonersLastMeal a Big Mac with extra pickles and a chocolate shake]].

-->'''Baby''': "Go on."

[[folder:Films -- Animation]]
* Alluded to and PlayedForLaughs in ''WesternAnimation/ABugsLife'', where Hopper at one point states that ''only'' [[EvenBadMenLoveTheirMamas their late mother's dying request]] is holding him back from [[CainAndAbel killing his bumbling brother Molt]].
-->'''Hopper:''' I swear, if I hadn't promised Mother, on her ''deathbed'', that I wouldn't kill you... I would ''kill you!''\
'''Molt:''' And believe me, no one appreciates that more than I do.

He is allowed to choose the method of his execution, which he takes advantage of to show how cowardly and weak the State is. Wordsworth also asks that the Chancellor of the State join him in his final moments and that his execution be broadcast live around the world, and the [[SmugSnake smug official]] agrees to join him. Of course, it's only ''after'' Wordsworth and the Chancellor are in the former's apartment that he announces how he's chosen to die: specifically, via explosion from a bomb that is hidden somewhere in the room, which has now been sealed off. While Wordsworth [[FaceDeathWithDignity calmly sits and reads his bible]], the increasingly-panicked Chancellor begins threatening and screaming for release...only to finally end up a broken man begging for mercy: "In the name of God, ''let me out!''" Having proved his point (especially because the State had declared that God didn't exist), Wordsworth does so ("Yes, Chancellor--in the name of God, I will let you out"). With the State's agents now displayed as weak and foolish, the Chancellor is promptly [[LaserGuidedKarma declared obsolete himself]] and torn to shreds by an angry mob of his former compatriots.
* On ''Series/TheVicarOfDibley'', Letitia requests that Geraldine take over her role as the Easter Bunny, secretly delivering chocolate eggs to people on the night before Easter, dressed in a rabbit suit. 327* ''Manhua/MyBelovedMother'': Sinbell's mother, Aya, who [[MamaBear used her body to save him from a gas explosion]] only to be mortally wounded beyond saving, managed to weakly make one last request to Dr. Carl (her lover and Sinbell's biological father) - for her mind to be reprogrammed into a robot's so she can continue taking care of her son. Leading to the story's main plot where Sinbell is RaisedByRobots and goes through various prejudice in a society displaying FantasticRacism on machines.

* "Tell Laura I Love Her" (at least, [[CoveredUp the Ricky Valance version]]) concerns a young man who enters a stock car race, hoping to win and use the prize money to buy his beloved a wedding ring. Instead, he fatally crashes, and his last request is... well, [[TitleDrop you can probably guess]].

* In "[[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iPAr7kL-mmg The Mariner's Revenge Song]]" by The Decemberists, as a child, the singer's mother, while on her deathbed, begs him to one day exact vengeance against the man who conned them out of house and home, leading her to contract a deadly case of tuberculosis:

* ''Literature/TheBible'': As Jesus was hanging on the cross, he told his disciple John to take care of his mother. [[note]]Interestingly, he is implied to have had several (half-)brothers, but apparently none of them showed up.[[/note]] This final request turned out to be not-so-final a few days later, but still he wasn't planning on physically sticking around for much longer. Also, one of the criminals who was being executed alongside him simply asked Jesus to remember him in Heaven; Jesus replied that he would certainly be there with him.
* ''Myth/ClassicalMythology'':
** Heracles, while still married to Deianira, had a concubine named Iole. When Heracles died, one of his last requests was for Hyllus, his son with Deianira, to marry Iole so that she would be well taken care of. Hyllus obeyed.
** In one sweet story, Zeus and Hermes [[KingIncognito disguise themselves as mortals]] to determine if [[RousseauWasRight humans are actually kind]]. Most turn them away, but one poor, elderly couple--Baucis and Philemon--offer them SacredHospitality instead, offering a simple but full meal. In thanks, the gods reveal themselves and offer them any wish they want. Baucis and Philemon ultimately choose to use that wish as a last request--specifically, they ask to [[TogetherInDeath die at the exact same moment]], thus sparing the other the pain of losing a spouse. Hermes and Zeus are so touched by this unselfish display of love that when they eventually die of old age, the gods transform the couple into a pair of trees, allowing them to embrace and thus truly be together for eternity.

They kidnap him and are about to kill him when Milton asks to be granted a last request: to make one last order through his company. 364* ''Theatre/WeWillRockYou'': In earlier versions, its mentioned that before Music/BrianMay's execution by [[OneNationUnderCopyright Globalsoft]], he asked to play one last guitar solo. This was granted, [[HoldingTheFloor putting off his execution by three-and-a-half days]].
* In Creator/WilliamShakespeare's works:

** In ''VideoGame/FinalFantasyXIII'', Nora Estheim makes one of Snow: "Get him home... please..." She's talking about her son Hope, but in a cruel twist, it takes Snow half the game to realise this, and by that point, Hope is homicidally angry at him for letting Nora die in the first place. He does calm down afterwards, but he also refuses to honour his mother's dying wish, instead staying with the party to help them on their mission.
** ''VideoGame/FinalFantasyXIII2'': An odd example, in that the character is already dead by this point; Serah reappears to Lightning, who has just discovered that she has died, and makes a final request of her - to promise she'll remember her - before her soul completely vanishes.
* ''VideoGame/GreedFall'': It's eventually revealed that Arelwin, [[spoiler:De Sardet's biological mother]], asked Petrus to kill her to end her suffering since she was dying a slow, painful death anyways. 405** Also in the ''Final Mix'' version of the original ''VideoGame/KingdomHeartsI'', there's a scene showing Riku when he first ends up in the Realm of Darkness after Ansem kicks his heart out of his body. 406* In ''VideoGame/{{Lisa}}'', after killing his own party members and Rando's army ''by himself'' attempting to reach Buddy (who, at this point, abhors and has completely rejected him as a father figure and friend), right before he begins his mutation into a Joy Mutant, Brad requests that Buddy hug him, something nobody has ever done for him, just so that he can know what it feels like before he dies.
* In ''VideoGame/MitsumeteKnight'', after you defeat [[FinalBoss Wolfgario]] [[NamesToRunAwayFromReallyFast the Ravager]] in [[spoiler: Raizze]]'s Route, he'll tell in his dying breath to [[spoiler: his daughter Raizze]], who witnessed the scene and tried in vain [[StandingBetweenTheEnemies stand between them]], to "live, as an ordinary [[spoiler: woman]]". 408* ''VideoGame/OctopathTraveler'': In Marsalim, you can meet a prisoner on death row named Kevin. His side quest is to learn what became of his old love Lara after he got locked up. The reward for the quest is a meager 300g and a Revitalizing Jam.
* In ''VideoGame/Persona5'', after [[spoiler: Akechi saves the Phantom Thieves from an army of Shadows led by a cognition of him by [[HeroicSacrifice sealing himself in with them]]]], he asks to make one last [[ArcWords "deal"]]: [[spoiler: take down [[BigBad Shido]] in his stead.]]
* In ''VideoGame/PokemonSuperMysteryDungeon'' the last thing that [[spoiler: your partner]] says to you before the credits roll is "Do me one last favor, and don't you cry!" However, considering that this ending is a massive tear-jerker, many players had a hard time honoring these words.
* Governor Dorr of Palmacosta in ''VideoGame/TalesOfSymphonia'' extracts a promise from you as he lies dying to save his transformed-into-a-monster wife and return her to human. 415* ''VideoGame/{{Yakuza 2}}'': after getting shot by Takashima and losing the FinalBattle to Kiryu, [[BigBad Ryuji Goda]] asks his half-sister Kaoru to smile for him, since she reminds him a lot of their late mother and she had a wonderful smile. Kaoru complies, and Ryuji dies at peace.

* ''WesternAnimation/TheSimpsons'' used this in "Cape Feare": [[ScheherezadeGambit to stall for time]], Bart's last request to Sideshow Bob (Bob is the sort of smug, overly dramatic villain who would actually ''ask'' if he had any) is to perform the entire score of ''Theatre/HMSPinafore''. He does, and it works.

* An episode of Franchise/{{Popeye}} had Brutus (as villain Juan Baptiste Le Brute) about to make Popeye walk the plank. Popeye's last request is to eat some spinach. You can guess what happened after that.

* During a riverboat themed episode of ''Series/TheSuperMarioBrosSuperShow'', Mario is forced to walk the plank and asks if he gets a last request. Bowser just reminds him that he's a CardCarryingVillain and has no obligations to grant him one.

DM is suddenly confronted by a huge robotic dog who plans to destroy him, but not before giving DM a final request--the answer to a question. He asks "What's big, grey, and has sixteen wheels?," which causes the robot dog to short circuit from the question's lack of logic. [[spoiler:During the epilogue, the robot returns to demand the answer from DM, who says it's an elephant on roller skates. The robot doesn't believe it until said elephant crashes on him.]]
** Similarly in "Demons Aren't Dull," the Demon of the Fourth Dimension grants DM a final request before destroying him. He asks to tell Penfold how the Demon was victorious with him explaining it and the Demon demonstrating it. DM eventually traps the Demon in a corridor between dimensions.

* The Make-A-Wish Foundation is a non-profit that grants the "wishes" of children with life-threatening diseases; for example, the foundation was inspired by the 1980 story of a 7-year-old boy with leukemia who was befriended by a U.S. Customs officer who granted his wish to be a police officer by having a custom-tailored police uniform made for him, giving him a ride in a police helicopter, and arranging for him to be sworn in as an honorary Department of Public Safety patrolman.
* The last conversation Creator/NeilGaiman had with his friend Creator/TerryPratchett was Terry asking Neil to be showrunner on the ''Series/GoodOmens2019'' TV series, and ensure it actually ''happened''. Neil has said that when Terry died, one of his thoughts was "You bastard. Now it's a last request."
* During UsefulNotes/TheFrenchRevolution, UsefulNotes/CharlotteCorday was put on trial for the assassination of Jean-Paul Marat, was found guilty, and sentenced to an execution. As her last request, she asked, "Since I still have a few moments to live, might I hope, citizens, that you will allow me to have myself painted." This was granted, and she was allowed to pick the artist, Jean-Jacques Hauer. It is said she serenely sat in her cell as Hauer painted a portrait of her.
* UsefulNotes/CharlesII: "Let not poor Nellie starve." To James the 2nd's credit, she didn't. The newly crowned king paid off Nellie's debts and gave her a pension, but sadly she passed of syphilis a few years after.
* One of [[UsefulNotes/NapoleonBonaparte Napoleon Bonaparte's]] generals, Michel Ney, was arrested, tried for treason, and sentenced to death by firing squad after the Emperor was defeated and exiled for the second time. Since he'd served loyally, he was offered a last request by the court. Ney chose to ''[[DefiantToTheEnd give his own execution order]].'' The court allowed it, and Ney's last words, in addition to a brief [[TheReasonYouSuckSpeech scathing speech]] to his captors, were "Soldiers--fire!"
* When UsefulNotes/GillesDeRais was sentenced to death for his many child murders, his request to be buried in the church of the monastery of Notre-Dame des Carmes in Nantes was granted.
* Creator/MasahiroSakurai revealed that [[Creator/SatoruIwata Satoru Iwata's]] last request was for him to make ''VideoGame/SuperSmashBrosUltimate''.
