->''"In that showdown, and at several other times in the film, Kubrick indulges his favorite closeup, a shot of a man glowering up at the camera from beneath lowered brows. This was the trademark visual in ''Film/AClockworkOrange'', and Jack Nicholson practiced it in ''Film/TheShining''. What does it mean? That Kubrick thinks it's an interesting angle from which to shoot the face, I think."''
-->-- '''Creator/RogerEbert''', review of ''Film/FullMetalJacket''

The Kubrick Stare is really quite simple to pull off. You simply do the following:

# Tilt head down
# Look up beneath eyebrows

...and ''voila!'' Instant super-creepy look!

It generally signifies that the character in question is either really, really pissed or really, really deranged, and the person they're looking at is really, ''really'' screwed. Other times -- usually when combined with a smile — it means they're feeling really, really clever (regardless of whether or not they actually are). It's arguably the most easily executed type of DeathGlare.

When a show or film utilizes the look, it's often a homage to Creator/StanleyKubrick, as the look appeared in a lot of his films. Either way, it's really creepy and ominous. Although depending on the context, it can also be very badass.

If the character in question is normally a ShrinkingViolet, this is a sign that said character has just been pushed ''way'' too far, and [[BewareTheNiceOnes whoever's responsible will almost certainly regret doing so]].

Often accompanied by CreepyShadowedUndereyes, RedEyesTakeWarning, a ForeheadOfDoom, a PsychoticSmirk or a SlasherSmile, and also a reveal matched with ScaryShinyGlasses. If a character combines this with FingerTenting and/or a PsychoticSmirk, odds are, they're a ManipulativeBastard. Heroic examples often are used for StaringDownCthulhu. See also: HiddenEyes, DeathGlare, and DisapprovingLook. Compare PrimalStance and LimpAndLivid.

[[folder:Anime & Manga]]
* ''Manga/{{Berserk}}'':
** Guts does this from time to time.
** [[spoiler:Femto]]'s Kubrick Stare during [[spoiler:The Eclipse]] is terrifying, since although [[spoiler:he's raping Casca, Guts' love interest]] purely out of spite, he's also staring at Guts the entire time.
*** What's even more creepy: We saw some [[{{Foreshadowing}} warning signs]] before the Eclipse when Griffith [[spoiler:was giving them the SAME STARE when it became clear to him that Guts and Casca were a couple who were ''in love'', and not just the blind admiration that people gave to him, which probably helped to [[FaceHeelTurn set him off]].]]
* ''Manga/{{Bleach}}'': Kubo plays with this trope a lot for many of his characters.
* Ophelia of ''Manga/{{Claymore}}'' does this a few times, as if we need any ''more'' reminders that she's psychotic.
* [[Characters/CodeGeassLelouchLamperouge Lelouch Lamperouge]] from ''Anime/CodeGeass'' commonly does this while his plans go as expected. When they fail... [[LargeHam he does all sorts of different gestures.]]
* Used in the first episode of ''Anime/DarkerThanBlack''. When the viewpoint character of the episode meets Lee/Hiei, he is stargazing and has a very normal conversation with her, and helps her escape her pursuers even. When she leaves, his expression slowly changes to this as he stares at her back, lending hint to the fact that he is chasing her himself, only much more subtly.
* [[Characters/DeathNoteLightYagami Light Yagami]] gets a few of these in ''Manga/DeathNote''. Notice how devilish he looks especially when it is combined with those [[RedEyesTakeWarning glowy red eye]] effects.
** [[https://vignette4.wikia.nocookie.net/deathnote/images/2/23/57787-near_super.jpg/revision/latest?cb=20120515211145 Near]] and [[http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_irz1fApXrmo/TLzUDTL0k6I/AAAAAAAAAyk/NZmhr0jmHmc/s1600/Mello2.jpg Mello]] as well.
* ''Manga/DragonBall'' characters do this quite a lot, usually right before Kicking it up to eleven but most notably Goku when first transformed into a Super Saiyan 3. This tends to be Frieza's default expression.
* ''Manga/TheFlowersOfEvil'': In her introductory scene, after a teacher also tries to hit Nakamura for calling him a "shitbug," she does this to him. It works, as he's freaked out, stops his action, and just tells her to see him after class.
* An (intentionally) hilarious one is pulled off in the blooper reel of ''[[Manga/FullmetalAlchemist Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood]]''. [[LargeHam Alex Louis Armstrong]] pulls one on Ling Yao at a normally serious moment when the heroes are discussing the homunculi. However, by messing around with the script, Greed instead says "You could say he's used its energy to claim the power of God for himself. ''Now will you please put on a fucking shirt?'' " What was a Kubrick Stare suddenly became a look of shame. [[https://youtu.be/g3aFPN2dEOA?t=386 It has to be seen to be believed]].
* ''Manga/FushigiYuugi'': In episode 12, Tamahome glares jealously at Hotohori when the latter hugs Miaka. And Hotohori quickly senses it.
* Yuno of ''Manga/FutureDiary'' does this through Yuki's letterbox -- while wishing him a ''good night'' [[spoiler:after he discovers the room in her house that contains the corpses of her parents, and her second self who she murdered]].
* The protagonist of ''Manga/GambleFish'' uses these in particularly dramatic moments.
* Buruge from ''Anime/GingaDensetsuWeed'' does this when part of his army is ready to intercept the incoming Ohu soldiers.
* Manga/{{Gravitation}}: Yuichi is about to be gang raped by a group trying to get at him and Yuki. They restrain and threateningly approach him. He simply gives them this glare with a defiant smile, basically daring them to do their worst, and cursing them.
* Kyon does one in the ''Literature/HaruhiSuzumiya'' anime, when the plot just screws with the viewer's head in "Remote Island Syndrome Part 2".
* ''Manga/{{Hellsing}}'': Many examples.
* ''VisualNovel/HigurashiWhenTheyCry'' elevates the Kubrick Stare and the SlasherSmile to an art form.
* Mr. Candle pulls this off in the first OVA of ''Anime/JewelBEMHunterLime'' when he charges to fight Bass. (as pictured above)
* In ''Manga/JoJosBizarreAdventure'', many villains usually have this expression. When they're first introduced, this stare is often accompanied by the Japanese onomatopoeia 「ゴゴゴゴゴ」[[note]]In romaji/roman letters, this reads "gogogogogo". It's a low rumbling sound that represents a menacing atmosphere. In the subtitles for the anime, Crunchyroll translated this as "SFX: MENACING".[[/note]] [[WrittenSoundEffect on-screen]].
* Dr. Hell from ''Anime/MazingerZ'' displays this expression quite frequently, usually when mad or after thinking of some devilish scheme.
* Yuri in ''Anime/MegaloBox'' does this when he gets passionately serious about something. This usually means the match is about to get settled in the next ten seconds.
* ''Anime/MobileSuitGundamWing'':
** Heero Yuy likes to make these, particularly [[http://aboutgundamwing.com/SC/SC26/vlcsnap-33030.jpg when using the ZERO System]].
** [[Anime/MobileSuitGundamSEEDDestiny Shinn Asuka]] does one as well, right after [[spoiler:burying [[LoveInterests Stellar]] in a watery grave]]. Knowing his [[AntiHero personality]], the viewer just ''knows'' right then and there that [[{{Revenge}} Kira is now in for a world of hurt]].
* Several yakuza mermen stare down Nagasumi during the second episode of ''Manga/MyBrideIsAMermaid'' to intimidate him.
* ''Manga/{{Naruto}}'':
** Naruto generally [[PreAsskickingOneLiner precedes asskicking]] with taking enough damage to kill a small town before pulling an incredibly bloodied one of these.
** Madara pulls a couple of these.
** This was Gaara's only facial expression before his HeelFaceTurn.
** Sasuke does this when Itachi ambushes him and Naruto in Part I, and also in part 2 after he [[GoesMadFromTheRevelation learns the truth about Itachi]].
* ''Anime/NeonGenesisEvangelion'':
** Kubrick Stare + ScaryShinyGlasses + FingerTenting = [[ManipulativeBastard Gendo Ikari]].
** Asuka does this when pissed off in ''The End of Evangelion'' after she gets utterly mangled by the Eva series.
* ''Manga/OnePiece'':
** Luffy pulls this at least once, perhaps most memorably at Sabaody Archipelago, looking at a Celestial Dragon [[spoiler:after Charloss shot Hachi]]. In fact, he pulls it off a lot while looking from underneath his straw hat. A general sign that something seriously pissed him off and is in for a beating.
** Zoro does this. It's usually combined with LetsGetDangerous.
** Sanji as well. Usually when's he's in a UnstoppableRage.
* Commonly done by Mewtwo in ''Anime/PokemonTheFirstMovie'', though his most famous is arguably the one right before he proceeds to reduce the lab he's in and everyone in it to rubble.
* Almost every character in ''Manga/Reborn2004'' does this when fighting at least once.
* ''Anime/{{Robotech}}'': The Robotech Masters do this occasionally. In the episode "A False Start", Captain Komodo does this before his decision to disregard orders and open fire on the Masters' Bioroid dropships. During the opening credits montage, Rand is seen doing this (actually taken from the opening credits for ''Anime/GenesisClimberMospeada'', one of ''Robotech's'' root anime shows).
* Akuha of ''Manga/RosarioPlusVampire'' often does this to hint at her unstable {{Yandere}} side.
* ''Anime/SailorMoon'': Makoto Kino sports one during her debut, as she glares at the thugs who are harrassing Usagi before [[CurbStompBattle giving them a good beating]].
* ''Manga/TokyoGhoul'': Kaneki does the deranged version of this occasionally after significant SanitySlippage when fighting.
* ''[[Manga/YuGiOh Yugi]]'' [[BewareTheNiceOnes of all people]] does this during his final duel with [[BigBad Bakura]].
* It may be the shape of his eyes, but NobleDemon Hiei in ''Manga/YuYuHakusho'' seems to perpetually wear this expression.
[[/folder]]

[[folder: Arts]]
* ''Art/TheFallenAngel'', by Creator/AlexandreCabanel proves that this trope is OlderThanRadio and very much PlayedForDrama. [[{{Satan}} Lucifer]] has his head tilted down while staring hatefully and mournfully toward HeavenAbove.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Comic Books]]
* ''ComicBook/SpiderMan'': Standard facial expression for the Green Goblin, when his eyes aren't wide and mad.
* ComicBook/TheJoker can pull these off pretty well.
* ''ComicBook/{{Superman}}'':
** If ''ComicBook/{{Supergirl}}'' is doing this, congratulations. You have pissed off someone who is as powerful as Superman and is more hot-tempered and less self-controlled. And now you are about to get pummeled. And God helps you if you hurt her cousin.
** In ''ComicBook/CrisisOnInfiniteEarths #7'' [[http://images.popmatters.com/news_art/1/1530_crisis_art03.jpg she does this right before beating the crap out of the Anti-Monitor]] to protect her cousin.
** At the beginning of ''ComicBook/RedDaughterOfKrypton'' Kara does this when ''Lobo'' [[http://abload.de/img/supergirl28-2lvkbh.jpg tries]] and [[http://abload.de/img/supergirl28-3otkq6.jpg manages]] to drive her mad, and it is used to hint that she is about to lose it and become a Red Lantern.
** ''ComicBook/ElseworldsFinestSupergirlAndBatgirl'': Supergirl did this after [[spoiler:discovering her murdered cousin's body.]]
** In ''ComicBook/Supergirl2005: ComicBook/DayOfTheDollmaker'', Catherine Grant does this while interrogating villain Toymaker.
** When Superman does this (especially if the [[GlowingEyesOfDoom heat vision]] is [[http://comicsmedia.ign.com/comics/image/article/606/606590/destructible_1114526105.jpg starting up]]), it means that [[BewareTheNiceOnes you are officially fucked.]] No exceptions.
** Ditto for ComicBook/LexLuthor.
* ''ComicBook/{{Transmetropolitan}}'''s main character Spider Jerusalem does this a lot, most always wearing his trademark mismatched sunglasses. Often his left eye won't quite make it over the round lens, adding elements of OpaqueLenses, ScaryShinyGlasses, and EyepatchOfPower to the mix, along with the occasional SlasherSmile.
-->"Run down the street like a motherfucker."
* ''ComicBook/XMen'':
** ComicBook/{{Wolverine}} puts on this expression on some of his many, many Creator/MarvelComics cover appearances.
** ComicBook/{{Cyclops}} [[http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_Gd8NBIma-zo/RzSgt3KLuhI/AAAAAAAABm8/hjnXT6PbLlA/s1600-h/scottLies1.jpg does this]] right before answering the man's question...[[spoiler:he lied about [[http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_Gd8NBIma-zo/RzSguHKLuiI/AAAAAAAABnE/VsI5SKYySOM/s1600-h/scottLies2.jpg his powers being gone!]]]]
** In the X-Men graphic novel ''God Loves, Man Kills,'' Magneto assumes the look while interrogating two of Rev. Stryker's minions -- just before he gives them a taste of his hell.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Fan Works]]
* In the second trial of ''VisualNovel/SuperDanganronpaAnother2'', Kanade Otonokoji begins giving people a very unsettling {{death glare}} when they question her arguments. What pushes it over into a Kubrick Stare is Kanade's body language: leaning forwards, eyes opened [[WideEyesAndShrunkenIrises extremely wide]] with the [[ExoticEyeDesigns Danganronpa eye rings]] completely gone, and face cast in a threatening shadow. Come Chapter 3 and she sometimes does the same thing, only instead of having her mouth slightly agape, she wears a SlasherSmile.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Films -- Animation]]
* ''WesternAnimation/BigHero6'': It happens in a super contrived and obvious way. Lacking a forehead and eyebrows, the instant [[spoiler:Baymax the robot is ordered to kill]] his helmet tilts forward inexplicably, giving him a permanent Kubrick Stare.
* ''WesternAnimation/{{Coco}}'':
** Elena gives one to Miguel as she is marching up to him just as he is about to play guitar for the mariachi guy.
** A Maestro gives one to Ernesto after the latter has been exposed as a fraud and a murderer.
* ''WesternAnimation/CorpseBride'': Emily [[https://i0.wp.com/caps.pictures/200/5-corpse-bride/full/corpse-bride-disneyscreencaps.com-4563.jpg?strip=all pulls one off]] late in the movie.
* Elsa in ''WesternAnimation/{{Frozen|2013}}'' does it [[https://i.pinimg.com/236x/cb/c1/0d/cbc10db932f5d74347a8e6ed1a989259--frozen-stuff-let-it-go.jpg at the end of "Let It Go"]] and [[http://static02.mediaite.com/themarysue/uploads/2015/03/elsa.png while fighting the Duke's guards]].
* At the climax of ''WesternAnimation/{{Hercules}}'', Hercules himself does this when he decides to [[spoiler:rescue Meg's soul from Hades]].
* ''WesternAnimation/{{The Hunchback of Notre Dame|Disney}}'':
** When Quasimodo is finally [[spoiler:persuaded by the gargoyles to fight back against Frollo]], he looks down into the street, grimacing for one of the few times in the film as the chorus begins to [[OminousLatinChanting break out in Latin chants]].
** There is an instance where Esmerelda gives Frollo one when he [[spoiler:essentially offers to save her from being burned at the stake if she sleeps with him. Just before the stare, she spits in his face.]]
* ''WesternAnimation/TheIncredibles1'':
** Syndrome uses it multiple times, including:
*** When he reveals his identity to Mr. Incredible.
*** When he walks away from Mr. Incredible in a later scene in the movie, grumbling an IronicEcho.
** Bob uses it a couple of times too: during the scene where his boss is chewing him out and forbidding him from trying to stop a mugging, and later, after Syndrome mocks him, immediately after everyone thinks Bob's family has died. He gives Syndrome the stare as he lunges in for an (attempted) kill.
* ''WesternAnimation/MyLittlePonyTheMovie2017'': Twilight gives a few of these toward Tempest to show defiance as she sings her VillainSong, moments before her DarkAndTroubledPast is revealed.
* ''WesternAnimation/ThePrinceOfEgypt'': After Moses returns his princely ring, Rameses holds it tight in his fist, his head bowed in sorrow, then suddenly glares up at Moses.
** He also glares at Moses in a similar way as he grieves over the death of his son.
* In ''WesternAnimation/{{Ratatouille}}'', Anton Ego somehow manages to do this to Linguini when the two first meet, even though Anton's standing -- looming, really -- over a seated Linguini.
* ''WesternAnimation/SnowWhiteAndTheSevenDwarfs'':
** The Queen when she orders the huntsman to kill Snow White.
** The monster trees' look and the evil glowing eyes in the darkness during the spooky forest scene, although it's just Snow White's imagination.
* ''WesternAnimation/{{Tangled}}'''s Rapunzel and Flynn, at least in [[http://www.movieposter.com/posters/archive/main/106/MPW-53452 this poster.]] See also DreamworksFace.
* [[spoiler:Deluded Buzz]] in ''WesternAnimation/ToyStory3''. It's even mentioned by name in the DVDCommentary.
* ''WesternAnimation/TreasurePlanet'': Jim after his fight with Silver over the map when Silver turns to leave and orders Morph to come.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Literature]]
* Employed by Krook, the unpleasant rag-merchant in ''Literature/BleakHouse'':
-->His watchfulness of [Jarndyce] was incessant... he got opposite to him, and drawing his hand across and across his open mouth with a curious expression of a sense of power, and turning up his eyes, and lowering his grey eyebrows until they appeared to be shut, seemed to scan every lineament of his face.
* In ''{{Literature/Dracula}}'', when the asylum patient Renfield receives a visitor, he "s[its] down on the edge of his bed with his head down, but with his eyelids raised".
* The cover of ''Literature/HandOfThrawn: Vision of the Future'' has [[http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/File:VisionFuture_HC.jpg this]].
* The ''Literature/HarryPotter'' series refers to this as well; in ''[[Literature/HarryPotterAndTheOrderOfThePhoenix Order of the Phoenix]]'', Bellatrix Lestrange's mugshot apparently shows her with a Kubrick Stare (judging by its description).
* In ''[[Film/TheKiss1929 The Kiss]]'', Charles shoots a very murderous one at Pierre after catching Pierre kissing his wife.
* In ''Literature/{{Perelandra}}'', the Un-Man gives Ransom an extraordinarily creepy one, judging from the description and the effect it has on Ransom.
* The main cover of Poison by Chris Wooding features the eponymous character doing one, [[http://pickychick.files.wordpress.com/2010/09/51iojre3w1l.jpg complete with noir-style coloring]].
* In the first Literature/VampireAcademy book, [[BewareTheNiceOnes Natalie]] gives this glare to Rose when she she turns Strigoi to bust her father Victor out of jail, approaching her with a glare so cold and dangerous it chills her to the bone. She then beats her within an inch of her life.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Music]]
* One of the opening shots of Music/{{Sia}}'s music video for "[[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KWZGAExj-es Elastic Heart]]" features Creator/MaddieZiegler making this face at Creator/ShiaLaBeouf.
* This, combined with a SlasherSmile, has become the trademark pose for the electronic artist Music/AphexTwin, first featured on his "Richard D. James Album".
* Featured heavily in EPICA's "unleashed" music video, mostly coming from Simone Simons, but also the rest of the band at the end of the video.
* Cobra Starship frontman Gabe Saporta has become famed for leveling [[http://imogenics.livejournal.com/135560.html "The Psycho Stare"]] at any camera in his vicinity. This has done nothing to quell the rumors about his basement of unspecified horrors.
* Oomph!'s singer Dero Goi does this at the end of the music video of [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y3lndvRhS_M Labyrinth]].
** Also worth noting that for the majority of the video, he looks like a cross between [[Film/AClockworkOrange Alex DeLarge]] and the Mad Hatter.
* Music/RegalPinion's page has a picture of him doing this, that same picture is also part of the cover of his album, "Shadow Plays".
* Music/TheyMightBeGiants singer John Linnell is made for this with his crazy sparkly eyes and slightly ridiculous forehead. He frequently expresses one during interviews as he is not a very gregarious man.
* Chester Bennington and Mike Shinoda of Music/LinkinPark have used this quite a bit, especially earlier in the group's career, namely the latter vocalist three minutes and fourteen seconds into the video for [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gd9OhYroLN0 Crawling]].
* Music/{{Blur}}'s video for "The Universal" contains several [[ShoutOut references]] to 'Clockwork Orange', so Damon Albarn does one or two of these, as well as a rare side-angle version.
* [[Music/{{Vocaloid}} Hatsune Miku]] at the beginning of the High Definition PV of [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hoLu7c2XZYU Nebula]], especially in this [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=T38uMcEi6V8#t=24s preview]].
* Jay Reatard gives a creepy Kubrick stare on the cover of his album 'Watch Me Fall' in what is clearly an homage to Nicholson in Film/TheShining. Can be seen [[http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51lSf0ZLYjL._SL500_AA300_.jpg here]]
* Music/RobZombie does his own imitation of Alex's stare in the music video for Never Gonna Stop (The Red Red Kroovy) which itself is based on ''A Clockwork Orange''.
* The art on the CD of Jerry Cantrell's ''Boggy Depot'' features him giving such a smile.
* Music/DavidBowie does this throughout the video for [[Music/TheNextDay "Valentine's Day"]], a sweet-sounding tune [[LyricalDissonance about mass murder]].
* Music/WeirdAlYankovic, of all people, does this during the music video for [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=urglg3WimHA "Foil"]]
* {{Exaggerated}} in the full video for Music/PoetsOfTheFall's "[[https://youtu.be/xfvtPTvuFTA Drama for Life]]," as the madman GhostInTheMachine enjoys staring at the viewer while the downward angle of his head results in totally HiddenEyes due to a FaceFramedInShadow.
* Music/{{Eminem}} does this in the BloodBath scene in the music video for "3 a.m."
* Music/DannyElfman:
** Something of a trademark of his during his time as frontman of Music/OingoBoingo, as can be seen in the opening moments of the "Dead Man's Party" video.
** The deliberately low-fi cgi version of Elfman does throughout the video for ''Happy'', except when it warps, twists out of shape and disintegrates in an extremely creepy way.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Pinball]]
* In ''Pinball/TimeMachineZaccaria,'' the TimeMachine-inventing Scientist combines this with a BaldOfEvil and EinsteinHair to project an air of menace.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Professional Wrestling]]
* This is one of Wrestling/TripleH's signature poses, as well as Wrestling/TheUndertaker.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Video Games]]
* Very common in modern video game box art in general. [[http://i.imgur.com/UsMRJ6a.jpg]]
* Hazama of ''VideoGame/BlazBlue'' usually reverts to his Terumi state when he's the kind of angry required for this trope, but that doesn't mean he can't do it. One of the most infamous instances is the true ending of ''Slight Hope'', when he [[spoiler:lost ''all'' of his plans to, and has ''finally run '''out of patience''''' with, Makoto Nanaya]].
* In ''VideoGame/CastlevaniaAriaOfSorrow'' and ''VideoGame/CastlevaniaDawnOfSorrow'', Soma Cruz's character image get this expression when he's influenced by Dracula, but not the rest of the time.
* ''[[VideoGame/CommandAndConquerTiberianSeries You cannot kill the Messiah.]]''
* Conker of ''VideoGame/ConkersBadFurDay'' does this in the first scene, in a parody of ''Film/AClockworkOrange''.
* Fenris of ''VideoGame/DragonAgeII'' does this during your first meeting, when you ask if he intends to do with his former master.
* Quite a few of the talking heads of ''VideoGame/{{Fallout|1}}'' and ''VideoGame/{{Fallout 2}}'' had this as their "angry" expression.
** In [=FO2=], the Kubrick Stare ratchets up in increments as you [[BerserkButton pushed their buttons]]. In particular contrast with First Citizen Lynette's "superior civilization" poise, which would fade until her lips were locked in a ''snarl''.
* ''VideoGame/FinalFantasyVII'': Sephiroth does this in the famous 'Nibelheim in flames' cutscene, both in the [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q2ua2LJmM6E the original game]] and [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gw3j1Ptswog the updated version]] in ''[[Anime/FinalFantasyVIIAdventChildren Advent Children]]'' and ''VideoGame/CrisisCore''. Sephiroth's Kubrick Stare also frequently appears in his more recent official artwork.
* ''VideoGame/FireEmblemThreeHouses''
** Edelgard’s retainer, Hubert, does this in his early supports with Byleth, warning them that they better live up to Edelgard’s standards, and that he’ll be keeping an eye on them in case they ever get in Edelgard’s way.
** Marianne unintentionally gives one to Ashe in their C Support, with him telling her that it makes her look creepy.
** [[spoiler:If Byleth chooses to side with Edelgard in the Holy Tomb, Rhea will give an inverted Kurbrick Stare, by lifting her head up and staring her eyes down at them, while declaring to have passed judgment upon them.]]
* Child Alma from ''[[VideoGame/FirstEncounterAssaultRecon F.E.A.R.]]'' is fond of doing these.
** Same with the Point Man. [[spoiler: Seems it's genetic]]
-->Jankowski: "It's something about his eyes. Like he's looking right through you"
* [[VideoGame/FiveNightsAtFreddys Freddy Fazbear]] [[NoPunIntended bears]] this in the game's cover art in a similar vein to [[Film/AClockworkOrange Alex DeLarge]].
* You will seldomly see Arthur from the ''VideoGame/GhostsNGoblins'' series [[https://capcom.fandom.com/wiki/Gallery:Arthur without this expression]]. Consider how NintendoHard the games from said series are, can you really blame him for looking so upset all the time? On the other hand, one could also interpret this as him being a focused, no-nonsense {{Determinator}}.
* In ''VideoGame/TheGodfather'', upon becoming the Don of the Corleones, the player character Aldo delivers an ''epic'' one to the camera. [[https://youtu.be/zexcWVUwZdo?t=30s Witness for yourselves]].
* ''VideoGame/KingdomHeartsBirthBySleep'': Terra does this sometimes as he is very tall and hunches over somewhat. Particularly notable is the one he gives Master Xehanort in the opening after the latter nearly eradicates Ventus.
* In ''VideoGame/KnightsOfTheOldRepublicIITheSithLords'', as you further corrupt your party members to the Dark Side, [[https://cdn.wikimg.net/en/strategywiki/images/d/db/KotORII_Portraits_Party_alignment.jpg their portraits evolve into this]].
* Link in ''Franchise/TheLegendOfZelda'' series, pretty much every time he's StaringDownCthulhu. Special mention to ''[[VideoGame/TheLegendOfZeldaSkywardSword Skyward Sword]]'', where he does it particularly often. The first notable time is when Ghirahim introduces himself, holding it through the entire monologue.
** In ''VideoGame/TheLegendOfZeldaTwilightPrincess'' [[http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v101/Futtis/Midnagrr.jpg Midna]] does it too at one point.
** So does [[http://www.zeldawiki.org/images/thumb/d/d0/GanonTP2.jpg/280px-GanonTP2.jpg Ganondorf]]. Kind of.
** ''VideoGame/TheLegendOfZeldaSkywardSword'': Ghirahim gives a good one just before the second battle with him, [[EvilTastesGood licking his lips]] for added creepiness, reminding you that although his dialogue is [[AmbiguouslyGay suggestive]] and [[FountainOfMemes hilarious]], this guy's still a ''Demon Lord'', and you're on his kill list.
* Shinji Naruse does this from time to time in ''VisualNovel/LuxPain''. You'll know you're seeing it when you can't see his pupils.
* ''VideoGame/MassEffect3'': When questioned by Admiral Hackett on how they got the krogan and salarians to cooperate (answer: [[spoiler:by sabotaging the genophage cure]]), Shepard's response of "careful diplomacy" is accompanied by a Kubrick Stare and PsychoticSmirk.
* Heroic example: Almost every piece of official ''VideoGame/MegaManZero'' artwork shows Zero like this.
* Every official concept artwork of [[VideoGame/MetalGear Solid Snake]] ever drawn or rendered.
* Erron Black from ''VideoGame/MortalKombatX'' has a [[https://i.ytimg.com/vi/UWHK9tTa2ag/hqdefault.jpg pretty nice one]] going on in his X-Ray attack.
* Any of the characters from ''VideoGame/Persona3'' and ''VideoGame/Persona4'' could qualify when they get a critical hit with their Persona. Especially the Protagonists and Antagonists
* If Futaba in ''VideoGame/Persona5'' is romanced she will try to give the Protagonist a cute look, only to have it turn into this by accident.
* Cyrus does this in the ''title sequence'' of ''[[VideoGame/PokemonDiamondAndPearl Pokémon Platinum]]''. It tells you exactly what kind of guy he is before you even learn his name.
** And Red's sprite is a bit of a variation in all games except Fire Red and Leaf Green.
** Giovanni's sprite in ''VideoGame/PokemonRedAndBlue'' and presumably Yellow, as well as ''VideoGame/PokemonFireRedAndLeafGreen''.
** Pidgeotto -- a bird Pokemon that's essentially half-NobleBirdOfPrey and half-FeatheredFiend--has a permanent one in ''VideoGame/PokemonGo''.
** Farfetch'd's Galarian form (and its evolution Sirfetch'd) also sport one in ''Videogame/PokemonSwordAndShield''.
* Lucas Baker, an antagonist of ''VideoGame/ResidentEvil7'', pulls this look off in an official illustration. [[https://vignette.wikia.nocookie.net/residentevil/images/d/d5/Lucas_Baker_RE7_Avatar.png/revision/latest?cb=20171222065828]]
* ''Franchise/SonicTheHedgehog''
** Many of the covers of ''Franchise/SonicTheHedgehog'' games on the Sega Genesis had Sonic giving a Kubrick Stare, [[AmericanKirbyIsHardcore especially in North America]].
** Metal Sonic sports a permanent Kubrick Stare along with [[RedEyesTakeWarning glowing red eyes]] to let you know he's the EvilCounterpart to Sonic.
* In ''VideoGame/{{Starcraft}}'' [[http://ru.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=%D0%A4%D0%B0%D0%B9%D0%BB:Sarah_Kerrigan_Broodwar.jpg&filetimestamp=20100624173908 Kerrigan]] both on the cover and her in-game avatar.
* The Tournament menu of ''VideoGame/SuperSmashBrosUltimate'' has ''Mario'' of all characters giving one to the player. And before that, he had given a similar look to the viewer on the box art of ''VideoGame/SuperSmashBrosBrawl''.
* ''VideoGame/SystemShock'': SHODAN's avatar depicts her giving this expression in both the first and second game. The trailer for the third game has her doing an inverted version.
* The "Meet the Engineer" video in ''VideoGame/TeamFortress2'' ends on this, in spite of eye-concealing goggles.
* Lee Chaolan from VideoGame/{{Tekken}} 2 [[http://www.fightersgeneration.com/characters2/lee.jpg]]

[[folder:Visual Novels]]
* ''Franchise/AceAttorney'':
** Damon Gant has one. His tendency to hold that pose for long dramatic pauses has contributed to his creepy reputation.
** Edgeworth also has a pretty good one.
** So has Apollo Justice, which is part of the reason why a fraction of the fanbase is convinced that Damon Gant is his biological father.
** During his VillainousBreakdown, [[spoiler:Kristoph Gavin]] combines this with a TwitchyEye for maximum creepiness. This is also the expression he's holding behind his ScaryShinyGlasses, though you can't see this until the last case.
* Many characters in ''VisualNovel/TyrionCuthbertAttorneyOfTheArcane'' lower their head and give a terrifying glare when they are really angry with someone. Examples include Celeste [=McCoy=], Aster de Wyverngarde, and Beatrice Frega, among others.

* ''Webcomic/RumorsOfWar'': [[NamesToRunAwayFromReallyFast Manaus]] sports these from [[InTheHood beneath a hood]] and cloak.
* ''Webcomic/{{xkcd}}'' manages to depict a Kubrick Stare [[http://xkcd.com/933/ without a face]]
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Web Original]]
* The host of ''WebVideo/ContraPoints'', in her "Fritz the Fascist" persona, has a truly creepy one toward the end of the [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sx4BVGPkdzk video]].
* In ''WebVideo/DoctorHorriblesSingAlongBlog'', the title character pulls one off quite well just before the final song of Act II.
* In ''WebVideo/DoomHouse'', when [[spoiler: the terrorist begins chanting in Arabic]], his head is slightly tilted down as his menacing eyes stay fixed on Reginald P. Linux, and the camera films this from an above angle, accentuating this even further.
* Flippy from ''WebAnimation/HappyTreeFriends'' whenever he goes into AxCrazy mode.
* [[PsychopathicManchild Hmac]] does this in his [[http://sphotos-b.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash3/c100.0.403.403/p403x403/529984_375779275829078_984179886_n.jpg 8/18/12 admin pic]] along with a PsychoticSmirk.
* Logan from Blog/JustAnotherFool pulls off a rather frightening one.
* Jack Douglass of WebVideo/JacksFilms does this quite often. Just look at his logo on his [[https://www.youtube.com/user/jacksfilms?feature=watch main channel.]]
* In {{WebVideo/Jreg}}'s webseries ''Centricide'', Hoppean's default pose is this.
* WebVideo/{{Markiplier}} invoked for two minutes thirteen seconds in his [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oC0xVc7Mso8 Hello Kitty Online]] episode. No, that is '''''not''''' a still photo.
* WebVideo/Mega64 spoofs this by listing an enormous number of video game covers that use this technique to make the protagonist look badass, calling it [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z9dg8PI2sEg Chin Down, Eyes Up]].
* WebVideo/TheNostalgiaCritic often does this.
* [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9KR7sE13fUk In this]] VideoGame/{{Portal}} "Still alive" cover [[TheCakeIsALie while offering]] [[http://cache.gawker.com/assets/images/comment/9/2011/10/e72b752988cd67abcb1541a92c4b11ba/original.png cake]]
* ''WebAnimation/RedVsBlue'''s Agent Carolina is able to pull this off with ''[[http://images.wikia.com/rvb/images/5/5a/Carolina_and_Epsilon.jpg a helmet]].''
** One of the Machinimators stated that the reason he liked to do Carolina in machinima so much is that her helmet is very good for doing shots like this.
* In ''WebVideo/SourceFed'', Lee delivers such a stare after being told that, no, she can't bring guns to a pillow fight, in the [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=okxrFUrRc00 Burping, Cheating, and Prometheus VS Madagascar...It's Comment Commentary 21!]] video (at 2:40). That girl is dangerous...
* Creator/TaliesinJaffe, playing Percy de Rolo on ''WebVideo/CriticalRole'', has a great one he pulls out when things get serious. Just watch him in Episode 25, taking an aimed shot at the man who cost him his family.
* [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SAz1L8DlvBM This Eagle Owl]] does a rather creepy one just before grabbing some bait.
* [[https://youtu.be/vA-bjpKvIw8?t=1863 Eddy Burback]] pulls one off when he realizes [[ItMakesSenseInContext the bathroom of a Rainforest Cafe]] [[SeriousBusiness doesn't have any monkeys in it]].

[[folder:Western Animation]]
* Hama on ''WesternAnimation/AvatarTheLastAirbender'' gets treated to this once her intentions are revealed.
** Appropriately enough, Katara does this when she threatens to "end" Zuko, "permanently", if he hurts Aang.
** Zuko does this the best during The Boiling Rock part 1.
** Azula does this too, right after she fires her Dai Li agents in Sozin's Comet.
** Sokka gets one as well in the four-part finale. Wind and everything!
** Amon of ''WesternAnimation/TheLegendOfKorra'' does this to help highlight that he's a bad guy.
*** But the fiercest one of all is Lin's in Turning the Tides.
* Ben in ''WesternAnimation/Ben10AlienForce'' does this in the episode "Above and Beyond" when he's somehow undergone a HeelFaceTurn. [[spoiler:It's all an act.]]
* In ''WesternAnimation/CodeLyoko'', William Dunbar performs one of these just after (faking) escaping from XANA's possession for a moment. The [[http://img.codelyoko.fr/galeries/william/William_164.jpg screenshot]] has reached MemeticMutation as his "rape face."
* In the episode "Party Of One" in ''WesternAnimation/MyLittlePonyFriendshipIsMagic'', usual GenkiGirl Pinkie Pie, delivers one to the main cast after being dragged to her surprise party. ItMakesSenseInContext.
* ''[[WesternAnimation/PeterAndTheWolf2006 Peter & the Wolf]]'': Peter, who for all his cuteness can deliver some intense stares, gives a Kubrick stare with some DeathGlare mixed in, after the Wolf eats Peter's pet duck.
* ''WesternAnimation/OneManBand'': The little girl busts out one of these when she's glaring angrily at the musicians, both of whom are obviously quite a bit taller.
* ''WesternAnimation/RobotChicken'' parodies this in their "Just The Good Parts" sketch: a segment of that dealing with ''Film/TheShining'' consists entirely of the Kubrick Stares from the film (and [[BigLippedAlligatorMoment a black dude dancing in the kitchen for some reason]]).
* WesternAnimation/SamuraiJack sometimes does this when he's ready to [[LetsGetDangerous get dangerous]], especially in the pilot.
* ''WesternAnimation/TheSimpsons''
** In "[[Recap/TheSimpsonsS6E6TreehouseOfHorrorV Treehouse of Horror V]]", Homer does this during a ''Shining'' parody. The creators mention in the DVD commentary that they made Dan Castellaneta do this while recording those lines. "Tilt your head forward and look up, you'll look like a lunatic."
** It appears again in "[[Recap/TheSimpsonsS26E4TreehouseOfHorrorXXV Treehouse of Horror XXV]]" with the "Clockwork Yellow" segment, which homages Kubrick's work [[spoiler: by Kubrick himself]].
* ''WesternAnimation/SouthPark'':
** In the episode "A Nightmare on Face Time" Randy does this twice in the ''Shining'' parody subplot.
** Happens again in the episode "Sons a Witches," Cartman is furious at his girlfriend for constantly making him miss out Halloween events. He delivers a silent, but murderous Kubrick Stare at her from across the lunch room while the rest of the boys around the table talk about something unrelated.
* One episode of ''WesternAnimation/SpaceGoofs'' has Stereo, Candy, Gorgious and Etno pull off these when they see Bud breaking down in tears.
* Ezra Bridger of ''WesternAnimation/StarWarsRebels'' gets this look whenever he edges closer to TheDarkSide. The Loth-wolves also get it as part of their CreepyGood aesthetic.
* [[BigBad Slade]] from ''WesternAnimation/TeenTitans2003'' somehow pulls this off with his entire face covered aside from his right eye.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Real Life]]
* Creator/LordByron [[OlderThanTheyLook (yes, it's very old)]] called this the 'under look'.
%%* Creator/MaggieGyllenhaal.
%%* Creator/AlanMoore.
* None other than Creator/StanleyKubrick himself, all [[http://www.booooooom.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/11/booooooom_kubrick_02.jpg the]] [[http://24.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_lfyf15JNYZ1qzzt52o1_400.png freakin']] [[http://jonas.blog.siol.net/files/2010/03/playboy.jpeg time]].
* Creator/SkandarKeynes, the actor who played Edmund Pevensie in ''Film/TheChroniclesOfNarnia'', does it ''a lot''. A few examples are on his page.
* Also of the Series/NewsRadio alumni, [[http://www.ifc.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/dave_foley_cast_mini_gallery_thumb_03.jpg Dave]] and Foley.
* Many animals will express their aggression by taking this position. If an animal flattens their ears back while giving a Kubrick Stare, they may be planning to attack.
* Anthony Kiedis of Music/RedHotChiliPeppers describes his "seductive stare" as the "Classic Kiedis Chin Tilt". Needless to say, it is very much a Kubrick Stare.
* Often used by fashion models as a stock pose of seduction.
* [[{{Webcomic/Sonichu}} Christine (formerly 'Christian') Weston Chandler]] used to do this pretty often, naturally. Her fans have even dubbed it "The Creepy Stare". An [[http://sonichu.com/w/images/f/f6/0694-AnnaBD8.JPG example]] (pre-transition). In most cases of her doing this, though, it's probably unintentionally creepy and just normal for her, a symptom of her autism whereby she can't internalize emotional reactions nor display them properly. To her credit, she doesn't do it very often now since she seems to be much more comfortable having her picture taken than she used to be.
* [[Creator/PixarRegulars Lee Unkrich's]] cat [[https://twitter.com/#!/leeunkrich/status/144792564401315840/photo/1 is pretty good at it.]]
* Check out the stare on Perry Smith in his mugshots. How did Truman Capote ever fall for that guy?
* Oddly, a benign version of this: [[UsefulNotes/DianaPrincessOfWales Princess Diana]] had a habit of adopting this posture.
* UsefulNotes/AdolfHitler had quite the impressive one in some pictures, particularly on the [[http://rationalwiki.org/w/images/8/80/MeinKampf.jpg most well-known cover]] of ''Literature/MeinKampf''.
* Joseph Goebbels, Hitler's propagandist, [[http://37.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_m10ga6AKMh1qcoag7o1_1280.jpg gives the photographer a hard look]] after finding out that he's Jewish.
* In chess, or in any type of competitive game, the Kubrick Stare is a common tactic used by players to intimidate, annoy, confuse, or discomfort their opponents. [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mikhail_Tal Mikhail Tal]], the Eighth World Chess Champion, was a chess player well known for his stares. It also didn't help his opponent's case that Tal was a tactical genius like no other on the chessboard. One of Tal's opponent's, Pal Benko, was so uncomfortable with Tal's gaze that he wore sunglasses during a game to avoid it. [[http://d1lalstwiwz2br.cloudfront.net/images_users/tiny_mce/Snow_Lion/phpxVqfRC.jpeg Watch]] the reaction of one of Tal's opponents to his Kubrick Stare.
* If you're tall and hard of hearing, you'll find yourself doing this unintentionally while trying to read the lips of whomever you're talking to.
* Creator/KirkDouglas was ''very'' good at this in his younger days. [[https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/e/ed/Kirk_douglas_photo_signed.JPG Examples]] [[https://c8.alamy.com/comp/B819EK/kirk-douglas-1951-B819EK.jpg here.]]
* Peter Strzok, an FBI agent who became a controversial figure in the Trump/Russia Investigation, made this with a smile during a hearing.
* In one particularly eerie photo, UsefulNotes/{{Columbine}} shooter Eric Harris can be seen doing this, with the other shooter Dylan Klebold standing right beside him, pulling what appears to be a SlasherSmile.
* This seems to be part of political pundit Ben Shapiro's public [[https://youthjournalism.org/cms/assets/uploads/2018/01/Ben-Shapiro.jpg image]]
* [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shoebill The shoebill]] constantly has a face-aimed-down-eyes-looking-up posture. From most angles it looks a bit dopey, but [[https://www.newstatesman.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/2/2021/06/2014_44_nature-1038x778.jpg when viewed from the front]] it looks perturbed or even malicious.
%%* [[https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=0HVQ160TF5U&pp=ygUOc3RlYWwgdGhlIHNob3c%3D This woman]] in a random fan interview seems very invested in the Jaguar's prospects. (Weblinks are not examples)
* UsefulNotes/DonaldTrump's [[https://amp.cnn.com/cnn/2023/08/24/politics/gallery/trump-indictment-georgia-election/index.html mugshot]], taken after being indicted by the State of Georgia for meddling in the 2020 election, garnered widespread attention online due to him appearing to pull a Kubrick stare, scowling at the camera with his head titled down. The mugshot immediately became a subject of MemeticMutation because of this, with one popular image comparing it with other such stares in Creator/StanleyKubrick's films.
