Lifeguards and other people trained in CPR are trained to look for signs of breathing before they ever begin. They are all exhausted when they hit the bank, though, and Sierra forcefully combines her promised kiss with the excuse of giving Cody CPR, even though he's fine and well enough to say so. Afterwards, he tries to scrub the taste of her off his tongue but ends up vomiting anyway.

272	* In real life, mouth-to-mouth resuscitation is no longer recommended in most cases of someone stopping breathing.[[note]]Drowning and choking are likely exceptions, but only if the airway is clear.[[/note]] The Red Cross pretty much anticipates that if someone has stopped breathing, then it's most likely they are already in a pulseless arrythmia. In most cases, CPR with compressions only is recommended, circulating blood to the brain and using oxygen already dissolved in the bloodstream, waiting for a defibrillator or paramedics to be present. Another theory on this is that chest compressions alone still can move enough air in and out of the lungs to provide some oxygen exchange. The concept is that stopping compressions to give breaths could be enough of a delay to cause brain death. If, however, you have two people performing CPR, by all means, administer rescue breaths without interrupting chest compressions.
