6->''"Since tonight is a celebration of the work and accomplishments of our community in this past year, it is only fitting then that we celebrate those we've lost, who've dedicated their lives to their crafts, both in front of and behind the camera. Through their immeasurable contributions, each of them left an individual and indelible mark that shared and informed us. They've touched our hearts, they've made us smile, and became dear friends, who we will always remain hopelessly devoted to."''
7-->-- '''Creator/JohnTravolta''', [[MediaNotes/AcademyAwardsCeremonies 2023 Academy Awards]][[note]]His final three words are a ShoutOut to Music/OliviaNewtonJohn, Travolta's ''{{Film/Grease}}'' co-star who died the previous year.[[/note]]

10Memorials to the dead are common in most human cultures. When the dead [[DiedDuringProduction are connected with]] [[TheCharacterDiedWithHim a TV show or movie]], you'll sometimes see this: a final tribute to that person as part of the show.
11
12For a true In Memoriam, there is a direct connection between dedicatee and the show, book or film being dedicated to their memory. There are a great number of books dedicated to the last astronauts of the space shuttle named ''Challenger'' or the emergency personnel who died when the twin towers of the World Trade Center in the city of New York in the state of New York collapsed. Unless the book is ''about'' them, those would fall under the larger {{Dedication}} trope.
13
14It is a CelebrityElegy when done through song or poetry for a famous person. For more musical examples, see GriefSong. Fanbases may turn to DeathFic. A MemorialCharacter is a character based on or named after a deceased person, as a way of immortalizing them.
15
16This is related to MeaningfulFuneral, which memorializes a character from the show. They can overlap when a show is based on RealLife. Needless to say, such memorials can become [[HarsherInHindsight awkward, or even tone-deaf in hindsight]] if the deceased is posthumously accused of misconduct.
17
18[[AwardShow Televised award shows]] often include an ObituaryMontage to honor those in their field who died in the past year. Also see SpecialThanks (where the credits acknowledge loved ones and friends of the production crew who weren't directly involved with the production and in most cases are still alive at the time of release) and PosthumousCredit (where the deceased actually contributed to the work prior to their death and have their part acknowledged in the credits, which in many circumstances will overlap with this trope). Might be combined with a ReallyDeadMontage if TheCharacterDiedWithHim.

They also hold marathons of movies those people were involved with in honor of them.
239** Every December, they run a touching "TCM Remembers" montage between shows to acknowledge film-related personalities who passed away that year; it tends to run 5+ minutes due to its thorough approach -- cult favorite figures and behind-the-camera talent such as special effects technicians and costume designers are afforded the same time and affection as A-list stars and directors. Very often, someone dies after the clipreel is released, and unlike the Academy Awards they recut the whole thing to include those people if possible. If not, they just go to the next year (this happened with Creator/EarthaKitt, for instance).[[note]]When Creator/CarrieFisher died suddenly at the very end of 2016, she was slipped in at the end, but her mother Creator/DebbieReynolds died the next day (after saying she just wanted to be with Carrie) and they couldn't recut it again; she was put in the 2017 montage, holding and kissing her daughter.[[/note]]

261** On January 1-2, 2022, Creator/TVLand aired an all-weekend marathon of ''Series/TheGoldenGirls'' to honor the passing of Betty White mostly consisting of episodes featuring White's character Rose. And that's just for old guys. For Wrestling/OwenHart, Wrestling/EddieGuerrero and Wrestling/ChrisBenoit they had full two-hour {{Kayfabe}} breaking tributes. Benoit's was an [[HarsherInHindsight unfortunate example]], as it aired moments before it emerged that his death was a murder-suicide involving his wife and son.

Even though evidence had pointed to Snuka not just having killed Nancy but abusing her before hand, and the company considered him an {{Unperson}} like Benoit during his arrest, suspending his legends contract and removing him from the Hall of Fame, the WWE decided to honor Snuka as a hero with a glowing tribute video package, a move that was considered tone deaf and hypocritical by many considering how quickly the promotion had worked to wash its hands of Benoit nearly a decade earlier.
294** Wrestling/TripleH wore a black armband during a match in remembrance of [[Wrestling/CurtHennig "Mr. Perfect" Curt Hennig]].

At the end of the show, they retired the then-current TNT Championship belt (which Brodie had held until his last match), giving it to Brodie Jr. and declaring him TNT Champion for life.

You know what that means?" were Harper's catchphrases, "Yeah yeah!" while in the ring, and "It's (name of day). You know what that means?" while on Twitter.

321** The 5 May 1988 episode, the first to air after the death of Creator/KennethWilliams a few weeks earlier (but which had been recorded before his death), was introduced by the Radio 4 {{continuity announce|ment}}r as a tribute to his memory.

326* The February 1, 2019 edition of ''Radio/TheNewsQuiz'' started with a brief tribute to Jeremy Hardy before the program proper started, as he'd died between the it being recorded and broadcast. Miles Jupp, who gave the tribute, was [[TearJerker clearly trying to hold back tears.]]
327* ''Radio/AmericanTop40'': The June 21, 2014 show was dedicated to the memory of co-creator/original host Creator/CaseyKasem, who had died the previous weekend. Additionally, a two-hour special aired over the July 4 weekend, with tributes from many of the stars, his successors, his one-time rival Rick Dees and others about the influence of the show and how much they enjoyed listening to Casey each weekend. Also, tributes were aired during ''Radio/AmericanCountryCountdown'' and its rival program, ''Radio/BobKingsleysCountryTop40'' (with Kingsley reflecting on his working with Kasem during his days with ''American Country Countdown''). Many times, a special segment would be aired when a prominent artist passed away. One of the earliest such tributes on [=AT40=] was to Jim Croce, who died in a plane crash in 1973, and Kasem aired an extensive tribute a month later. Both ''American Country Countdown'' and ''Country Top 40'' have done the same through the years, most recently with Music/MerleHaggard.

332** The same thing happened when Pat Carroll died, except the song played was "Poor Unfortunate Souls". The song would play 15 times the week after her passing to honor her (most frequently-aired songs on the channel play 13 times a week), making it the most-played song that week.

342** Nebraska Cornhuskers punter Sam Foltz was killed in a car accident prior to their September 3, 2016, game against the Fresno State Bulldogs. Nebraska's first punt attempt of the game, therefore, had no punter. The play clock expired creating a delay of game penalty, which Fresno State declined.
343** Sean Taylor, the free safety for the Washington Redskins (now Washington Commanders), was shot and killed in a home invasion on November 27, 2007. 344* Following the death of Kobe Bryant in January 2020, multiple teams paid tribute by deliberately earning a 24-second shot clock violation and an 8-second backcourt violation - reflecting Bryant's jersey numbers. The first Clippers and Lakers games after his death also featured extended tributes to Bryant.
345* When golfer Payne Stewart died in a plane crash after his Learjet's pressurization system failed and everyone on board passed out from hypoxia, several PGA golfers at the 2000 US Open in Pebble Beach paid tribute by doing their own version of a 21-gun salute- they hit 21 golf balls into the ocean.
346* After Dan Wheldon was killed in a massive pile-up in Lap 11 of the 2011 IZOD [=IndyCar=] World Championship at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, the race was abandoned and the remaining 19 cars did 5 laps at pace speed in tribute, while the pylon was blanked except for Wheldon's no. 77 and bagpipe renditions of "Danny Boy" and "Amazing Grace" played over the P.A. system.

There is also a tribute to Walt in the resort's dedication plaque in the Magic Kingdom:

366** During the opening ceremony for ''Ride/StarWarsGalaxysEdge'' at Disneyland, Creator/HarrisonFord paid tribute to Peter Mayhew (the original performer for Chewbacca) by saying "Peter, this one's for you" as he helped power up the ''Millennium Falcon''.
367** Since ''Ride/MickeyAndMinniesRunawayRailway'' is Creator/RussiTaylor's final performance as WesternAnimation/MinnieMouse, the song "Nothing Can Stop us Now" was dedicated to her after the ride's opening in early 2020. Russi was able to record all of her lines before her passing in the summer of 2019.
368* [[Ride/UniversalStudios Universal Parks & Resorts]]:

418* ''Website/TheOnion'' spoofed this with "Thanks for Dedicating That Mediocre Sitcom Episode to Me", which is "written" by a fictional crew member of the real-life '90s sitcom ''Veronica's Closet''. The gratitude is purely sarcastic, pointing up the unfortunate tendency of this trope to collide with SturgeonsLaw in terms of the quality of the actual work.
419* ''Platform/{{Newgrounds}}'' has an [[http://www.newgrounds.com/wiki/about-newgrounds/history/in-memoriam in memoriam]] to all the creators the site has lost. Unfortunately, it's grown considerably the past few years.

Naturally, when it came out during [=#ChangeTheChannel=] that Carmichal was a sexual predator, CreatorBacklash resulted, with Saucedo (who composed the Google document at the heart of [=#ChangeTheChannel=]) and Lovhaug editing the descriptions of the [=YouTube=] uploads of ''Farewell, [=FamiKamen=] Rider'' and the ''Gameboy'' #3 review respectively to note that they no longer reflect their views of Carmichal, disabled comments on them, and are only keeping the videos up for historical purposes (and in Saucedo's case, feeling it wouldn't be fair to the other people who worked on ''Farewell, [=FamiKamen=] Rider''). Additionally, Lovhaug and White have ditched the [=JewWario=] hats.

445* ''WebVideo/NarutoTheAbridgedComedyFandubSpoofSeriesShow'' episode "ENNETHING NO JUTSU" was dedicated to wrestler Wrestling/RandySavage.
446* WebVideo/TheNostalgiaCritic has parodied this trope on multiple occasions, such as when the duck dies in the ''Series/SavedByTheBell'' episode or when he does a dedication montage to his beard (after having had to shave it off in real life so that he could do his Joker bit).
447** He also did a serious tribute video to Creator/RogerEbert after he died.

450* WebVideo/{{Phelous}}'s video on Episode 15 of ''Series/NinjaTurtlesTheNextMutation'', which released in November 2020, includes a memoriam for Creator/KirbyMorrow (the voice of ''Next Mutation'' Michelangelo) in the credits.

459* ''WebVideo/YuGiOhTheAbridgedSeries'':
460** Episode 47 was dedicated to Creator/MaddieBlaustein, the voice of Solomon Muto in [[Anime/YuGiOh the original anime]].
461** An early episode ends with a spoofed memorial to Tristan's original voice, which had spontaneously changed (with everyone but Tristan noticing). This references the point in the English dub when Tristan gets a new voice actor who doesn't make him sound like [[Series/BarneyAndFriends Barney the Dinosaur]]. In the next episode, however, Yami plays Monster Reborn to resurrect Tristan's original voice, and life goes on.
