[[JustForFun/DescribeTopicHere Don't you think you've described enough tropes already?]]

''[[JustForFun/DescribeTopicHere Hey, I'll TELL you when I've described too many!]]''

A character is having a lot to drink, induced [[DrowningMySorrows by sorrow]] or otherwise, and TheBartender tries to gently get this character to stop. This character will then react angrily. Often, the bartender asks "Don't you think you've had enough?", and the character snaps "I'll ''tell'' you when I've had enough!", hence the name. The bartender may listen or comply with the demand.

Nowadays, it's almost a DiscreditedTrope due to having as many parodies, usually involving someone DrunkOnMilk or drinking an [[CantHoldHisLiquor absurdly small amount]], as straight uses.

Also, even though people in RealLife are prone to do this, bartenders don't stop at asking. A bar can lose its license to serve alcohol by serving overly intoxicated customers in most jurisdictions, and the bartender may face legal repercussions, too. They will simply refuse to serve a seriously intoxicated customer any more alcohol, and if the customer makes a fuss, well, that's why bars have {{Bouncer}}s. Less scrupulous bartenders may start diluting the drinks with cheaper, non-alcoholic juice while still charging full price, since someone that drunk won't be able to tell the difference.

Almost the mantra of TheAlcoholic.

!!Examples:

[[foldercontrol]]

[[folder:Anime & Manga]]
* In chapter 154 of ''Manga/KaguyaSamaLoveIsWar'', Miko insists as she stuffs another alcohol-filled bonbon into her mouth: "The drunk person gets to say whether or not they're drunk!" Ishigami is unconvinced and lifts the tray out of [[TheNapoleon her]] reach.
* In ''Literature/{{Campione}}'', a drunk Erica demands that Godou pours more wine in her glass. He obviously refuses, in no small part because she's talking to ''a mask'' in front of a mirror, facing ''completely away'' from Godou.
* In ''Manga/OnePiece'', Whitebeard's first scene has him claiming this. Unique in that he's neither drunk or talking to a bartender, but instead starting to feel his years and it's his nurse who's trying to curb his alcoholism for health reasons.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Audio Plays]]
* In the ''AudioPlay/BigFinishDoctorWho'' audio drama "The Revolution'', Literature/BerniceSummerfield is asked if she's had enough (while lying on the floor) and asks if the bartender has a scientific test for inebriation. The bartender, Renk van Magnastein, suggests attempting to say his name.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Fan Works]]
* In ''Theatre/{{Ani}}'', [[spoiler:[[TheAlcoholic Obi-Wan Kenobi]]]] proves that this phrase is much more effective when combined with a JediMindTrick.
-->'''Bartender:''' I think you've had enough.\
'''[[spoiler:Obi-Wan]]:''' I'll tell you when I've had enough!\
'''Bartender:''' You'll tell me when you've had enough!
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Films -- Live-Action]]
* [[StraightGay Agent Smecker]] of ''Film/TheBoondockSaints'' rudely tells the bartender at a gay club to "Just pour the drink, [[BoomerangBigot you fairy fuck]]" when the bartender tries to tell him he's had enough.
* ''Film/{{Dangerous|1935}}'': Played with. An already very drunk Joyce asks if she can have Don's drink at the bar. Don says "Haven't you had enough?" Joyce agrees, saying "Quite enough." Then she grabs Don's drink and downs it.
* Seen in ''Film/TheLostWeekend'' (although he's not Drowning His Sorrows so much as getting plastered because he's a professional drunk.)
* In ''Film/PetticoatPlanet'', Lily tries to tell the drunk mayor that she thinks she's had enough, only to get this response. The mayor then demands a bottle of redeye and a curly straw.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Literature]]
* ''Literature/{{Discworld}}'':
** In ''Literature/MovingPictures'':
--->'''Barman:''' You don't think you've had enough, do you?\
'''Death:''' [[AC:I know when I've had enough.]]\
'''Barman:''' Everyone says that, though.\
'''Death:''' [[AC: I know when ''everyone'' has had enough.]]
** ''Literature/MenAtArms'' uses an [[InvertedTrope inversion]] to establish just how [[OffTheWagon drunk]] Vimes is.
--->'''Colon:''' Vimes? Do you want [[OffTheWagon another drink]]?\
'''Vimes:''' ''[incoherent mumbling]''\
'''Colon:''' [[OhCrap I've never known him not to give a loud clear "Yes"]]!
* Henry in ''The Secret History,'' only with pills.
* Subverted in the ''Literature/CallahansCrosstimeSaloon'' series. Callahan believes his customers are adults and normally won't question how much they want to drink. He WILL, however, take their car keys as he doesn't want anyone who's had too much to drive home drunk.
* In the ''Franchise/StarWarsLegends'' novel "The Hutt Gambit" (Book 2 of ''Literature/TheHanSoloTrilogy''), Han starts out in a dive bar, DrowningHisSorrows over being drummed out of the Imperial Navy. Chewbacca, at the beginning of his [[IOweYouMyLife life-debt]] to Han, worries about how much the human is drinking, to which Han grumbles, "Keep your opinions to yourself, hairball. I'll know when I've had enough"
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Live-Action TV]]
* In a skit on ''Series/ABitOfFryAndLaurie'', Stephen, as the barman, asks a worse-for-wear looking Hugh if he's sure he wants another drink as he's had six already, and is told "You just keep 'em coming!" Stephen says "Righto, your funeral", and pours another [[DrunkOnMilk blackcurrant cordial]].
* In ''Series/{{Riverdale}}'', in the episode "Chapter Forty-Six: The Red Dahlia", Reggie attempts to cut Archie off after several hard ones in Veronica's speakeasy.
* ''Series/{{Supernatural}}''. In "Defending Your Life", Dean is drinking double-shots of whiskey and [[DrowningMySorrows has no intention of slowing down]]. Until the attractive female bartender says she finishes work in an hour and doesn't want him passing out. So Dean decides to switch to beer.
* Edward Gunn, TheAlcoholic drifter that ''Series/{{Bosch}}'' has long suspected of being a SerialKiller, says this word-for-word in the first scene of Season 3, right before he's kicked out of a bar. Shortly thereafter he's murdered, and suspicion falls on Bosch.
* ''Series/TheWire'' In a cold open for one episode, Jimmy [=McNulty=] is getting drunk at a bar, and orders one more shot. The bartender tries to get him to slow his roll and asks if he's going to drive. [=McNulty=] swears to him he won't, only for the scene to then GilliganCut to a very drunk [=McNulty=] [[DrunkDriver barreling down the street while half-singing along to the Pogues]] and then crashing into concrete pillar ''twice''.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Music]]
* Psychostick's decidedly tongue-in-cheek song "Beer Is Good" has, at the end of the second refrain, a seemingly sober by-stander suggesting, "Uh, dude, I think you've had ''enough--''" at which the singer takes a breath and declares with hostility , "NOOOOO..."
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Radio]]
* A variation is used in ''Radio/ImSorryIllReadThatAgain''.
-->'''David:''' I'll... have the shame again, Sham...\
'''Barkeep:''' Don't you, uh...don't you think you've had enough, Mr. Hatch?\
'''David:''' ''Enough!? Shure'' I've had enough! Of this crazy, go-ahead, ''shtinkin''' world... that'sh what I've had enough of!
* On ''Radio/CabinPressure'', when [[TheTeetotaler Douglas]] and [[ManChild Arthur]] are knocking back pineapple juice in Kilkenny airport:
-->'''Douglas:''' Gerry, two more pineapple juices over here.\
'''Gerry:''' Er, d'you not think maybe you've had enough?\
'''Douglas:''' No, I ''don't''.\
'''Gerry:''' Only they're quite acidic. You can get yourself a stomach ulcer.\
'''Douglas:''' Don't worry, Gerry. We can handle our juice.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Web Comics]]
* In ''Webcomic/{{Narbonic}}'', Dave, ''after'' [[DrowningMySorrows drowning his sorrows]], moves from the bar to the coffee shop, where he snarls at Calliban the demonic barrista "I'll tell ''you'' when I've had enough Mocha Talls, dammit!"
* A [[http://www.captainsnes.com/2011/05/27/678-a-bitter-fruit/ flashback]] in ''Webcomic/CaptainSNES'' had this exchange, after King Hippo witnessing some [[PlotlineDeath really disturbing events]]:
-->'''Bartender:''' I think you've had enough root beer, sir.\
'''King Hippo:''' Your name's Newton, right?\
'''Bartender:''' Yes.\
'''King Hippo:''' Then I haven't had enough.
* Subverted in ''Webcomic/TheOrderOfTheStick''. When a dwarfishly drunk Haley swipes Durkon's pint, he accuses her of having had enough, setting up for this trope. Haley, however, refers to Durkon's expertise; it's ''Durkon'' who decides she hasn't had enough to forget that [[TheDitz Elan]] [[http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0747.html out-logicked her]].
* In ''Webcomic/ElGoonishShive'', TheRant of [[https://www.egscomics.com/comic/2015-07-08 this]] comic does this with ''awkwardness'' of all things and the "bartender" is apparently someone serving Dan pancakes.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Video Games]]
* ''VideoGame/ResidentEvil6'':
-->'''Chris:''' ''[downs a whole glass of alcohol]'' Another round. ''[Bartender fills it up only halfway]'' Fill her up.\
'''Bartender:''' I think you've had enough.\
'''Chris:''' ''[swiping bottle from Bartender]'' Listen sweetheart, [[TookALevelInJerkass you're here to pour drinks and look pretty, so how about you shut your mouth?]]\
'''Bartender:''' ''[grabs Chris' glass and [[FoodSlap splashes it straight into his face]]]'' How about you get the hell out of my bar?
* In the first ''VideoGame/{{Space Quest|I The Sarien Encounter}}'' game, after several mugs of Keronian ale the bartender refuses to pour you another one. Sticking to the trope is a way to [[HaveANiceDeath yet another stupid death]].
* An NPC in a bar in ''VideoGame/ChronoTrigger'' demands that the reluctant bartender give him more [[FrothyMugsOfWater soda pop]], declaring "I'll tell you when I've had enough '''sugar!'''"
* ''VideoGame/GrandTheftAutoOnline'': the player can order drinks from bars until they pass out drunk. For the last few the bartender tries to gesture the player to stop, but the character will [[HeroicMime gesture back insistantly]].
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Western Animation]]
* In an ''WesternAnimation/AlvinAndTheChipmunks'' episode that spoofed ''Film/KingKong'', Theodore was at a bar, and when the bartender asked the question, Theodore snapped "More carrot juice!"
* ''WesternAnimation/TheSimpsons'':
** In "[[Recap/TheSimpsonsS6E22RoundSpringfield Round Springfield]]", Bleeding Gums Murphy revealed in flashback that his lost his music fortune on his [[GRatedDrug $1500 a day habit]], buying ''[[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Faberge_egg Fabergé eggs]]''. Cue Murphy at the counter of a jewelery store demanding another egg while the jeweller asks "Don't you think you've had enough?", then a down-and-out Murphy in an alley surrounded by broken Fabergé eggs.
** In "[[Recap/TheSimpsonsS6E11FearOfFlying Fear of Flying]]", Homer's search for a new bar to hang out at sees him in the bar from ''Series/{{Cheers}}'', where he finds (with a ZanyScheme going on in the background) Norm Peterson asking for another:
--->'''Woody:''' I think you've had enough, Mr. Peterson. My chiropractor says I can't carry you home any more.\
'''Norm:''' Just gimme another beer, you brain-dead hick! ''[grabs bottle, smashes it]'' I'll kill you! (to the other patrons) I'll kill all of you! [Cliff and Frasier hold him down]\
'''Cliff:''' Whoa, settle down, Normy. Gotta save those pipes for karaoke!\
[Homer panics and suddenly departs. Cut to Norm more settled down in a corner.]\
'''Norm:''' I love you guys... [starts crying, and camera holds for uncomfortably long time; ''Cheers'' leitmotif plays]
* Bobby from ''WesternAnimation/KingOfTheHill'' says this when the owner of the deli he's at tries to convince him he's had enough chicken liver.
* On ''WesternAnimation/RockosModernLife'', in the episode "Who's For Dinner", Heffer runs away from home after discovering he's adopted. A diner waiter tells Heffer he's had enough French fries to eat, and Heffer yells in response, "I'll tell you when I've had enough, you greasy plate jockey!" Then he tries to eat the dijon mustard stain on the waiter's apron.
* In the ''WesternAnimation/HeyArnold'' episode "6th Grade Girls", Maria's boyfriend Tommy does this at the school dance with cups of punch.
* ''WesternAnimation/MyLittlePonyFriendshipIsMagic'':
** In the episode "[[Recap/MyLittlePonyFriendshipIsMagicS1E26TheBestNightEver The Best Night Ever]]", Spike gets ditched by the main characters and spends a lonely evening at the local donut shop:
--->'''Spike:''' Hey, Pony Joe! Another donut.\
'''Pony Joe:''' Don't you think you've had enough?\
'''Spike:''' ''[Slams cocoa mug down on the counter] Another donut! EXTRA SPRINKLES!''
** And in "[[Recap/MyLittlePonyFriendshipIsMagicS8E18YakitySax Yakity-Sax]]", Pinkie Pie is drowning her sorrows in ice cream sundaes while listening to a yovidaphone musician in Yakyakistan:
--->'''Pinkie:''' Gimme another.\
'''Yak waiter:''' But pony already had twenty-five ice--\
'''Pinkie:''' ''[slams hoof on the table] I SAID GIMME ANOTHER!!''
* Invoked by ''WesternAnimation/{{Freakazoid}}'' in the epic SpitTake scene in the episode "And Fan Boy Was His Name":
-->'''Freakazoid:''' Hey Mike, enough with the bells! [[note]]He means the cash register.[[/note]]\
'''Mike:''' [[Film/ItsAWonderfulLife I'm giving angels their wings]]!\
'''Freakazoid:''' Well cut it out and give me another.\
'''Mike:''' Hey, slow down Mr. F, it's not like Expendable Lad is dead or anything, he's just in the hospital with a bruised clavicle!\
'''Freakazoid:''' I said ''give me another one!'' CURSE YOUR TINY PAPER HAT! [[DrunkOnMilk If I want to blitz myself into some papaya-induced hallucination, that's my business...]]
* Used in ''WesternAnimation/HomeMovies'' when Jason became addicted to candy in one episode.
* Parodied in ''WesternAnimation/DrawnTogether'', when Captain Hero is drinking lemonade and seemingly getting drunk off of it. He gives this line when asked if he's had enough, then demands "the whole lemon." He proceeds to squeeze the entire lemon into the cup and drink the lemon juice straight. Needless to say, his face implodes.
* Used in ''WesternAnimation/RocketPower'' after Otto costs Reggie a really cool birthday party at the skate park. She loads up on fries from the shack (with extra salt) until Tito cuts her off and makes a sarcastic remark about her driving home.
* The ''WesternAnimation/PinkyAndTheBrain'' episode "This Old Mouse" has Brain [[DrowningMySorrows drowning his sorrows]] in... [[DrunkOnMilk water from the cage's bottle]].
-->'''Pinky:''' Um... Brain... d-don't you think maybe you've had enough to drink?\
'''Brain:''' Nag, nag, nag, just leave me be!
* WesternAnimation/{{Popeye}} regales how his prehistoric ancestors discovered spinach in an Al Brodax cartoon (made by the Larry Harmon studio). One scene has caveman Brutus bopping Popeye on the head with his club.
-->'''Popeye:''' When does I gets a turn?\
'''Brutus:''' Not yet. ''[bops him again]'' I ain't tired yet! ''[laughs]''

[[folder:Real Life]]
* One [[http://www.drunkard.com/issues/10_06/10_06_andre_giant.html issue]] in the ''Modern Drunkard Magazine'' about Wrestling/AndreTheGiant says that once a bartender wanted him to leave so he will be able to close; as he didn't want to, the bartender told him that he could stay only as long as he keeps drinking (the thing of Andre being a wrestler may have something to do with it); [[NeverGetsDrunk Andre finished up at 5:00 AM]].
