->''"That was the last time I saw Richard. He died later that night. I couldn't save him. I couldn't '''save''' him. Richard was right about real strength, though. It is on the inside. And I know I'll find it. Just not tonight. Tonight I know what it is to be human. Tonight my super skin is still invulnerable, but my Richard is never coming back, and my heart is broken into a million pieces."''
-->-- '''ComicBook/{{Supergirl}}''', ''ComicBook/YoungLove''

A badass falls head over heels in love and has their heart broken, sometimes because their love interest outright rejects them, sometimes because the object of their affections falls in love elsewhere or is already in a relationship with another, or some other tragic event happens that denies the badass the affections of their love interest. The worst case scenario by far is when their love interest is StuffedIntoTheFridge, killed off just to spite the badass.

Compare BrokenAce. See also YouKilledMyFather and DeadSidekick. Occasionally, after the rejection, the badass will fall victim to HeroicBSOD and BreakTheBadass.

* ''Franchise/{{Firefly}}'': Zoe is heartbroken in the comics set after the movie, due to her husband Wash dying in the film. It’s likely just discovering she’s pregnant that keeps her going.
* ''[[ComicBook/GIJoeDevilsDue G.I. Joe: America's Elite]]'': Flint is shown to be utterly devastated by the murder of his wife Lady Jaye, his loss causing him to be more violent and ruthless than before. He's even shown to blame himself for sparing his wife's killer.
* ''ComicBook/{{Robin|1993}}'': [[Characters/RobinTimDrake Tim Drake]]'s longtime girlfriend Stephanie Brown was tortured to death by Black Mask. To make matters worse this happened right before his father and two best friends were killed, all of which combined caused a drastic permanent change in his personality. Stephanie's death was eventually retconned to have been faked so she was able to return and, after a lot of discussions about trust and betrayal, they resumed their relationship.
* ''ComicBook/{{Royals}}:'' Ronan the Accuser, in addition to the complete annihilation of his homeworld, is also distraught over his forced separation from Crystal, to the extent it's all he accuses her of when putting the Inhumans on trial. As Crystal points out, that situation was kind of his own damn fault.
* ''ComicBook/SinCity'': Marv after discovering the first woman to ever sleep with him has been murdered. Seeing how he normally responds to violence against women and violence against friends... [[RoaringRampageOfRevenge you get the idea.]]
* ''ComicBook/{{Spawn}}'': The titular main character made a DealWithTheDevil just so he could go back to earth to see his wife Wanda again, and what does he get to see? [[spoiler: Wanda - happily married to his best friend in life and with a daughter.]] Ouch.
* ''ComicBook/SpiderMan'': [[Characters/MarvelComicsPeterParker Spider-Man]] lost [[Characters/MarvelComicsGwenStacy Gwen Stacy]] to the [[Characters/MarvelComicsNormanOsborn Green Goblin]] in ''ComicBook/TheNightGwenStacyDied''. It's one of the most iconic moments in his history but damn, poor Peter. Meanwhile, in stories set in the future/{{Alternate Universe}}s/{{What If}}s, it's common for his most famous love interest, [[Characters/MarvelComicsMaryJaneWatson Mary Jane Watson]], to die or disappear. (Just see the page image with Spidey doing a CradleOfLoneliness on Mary Jane's headstone from ''ComicBook/SpiderManReign''.)
* ''ComicBook/{{Supergirl}}'': In ''ComicBook/YoungLove'', Dick Malverne, Pre-Crisis Characters/{{Supergirl|TheCharacter}}'s childhood crush died after confessing he loved her and he knew her SecretIdentity all along, leaving her heart-broken.
-->That was the last time I saw Richard. He died later that night. I couldn't save him. I couldn't '''save''' him. Richard was right about real strength, though. It is on the inside. And I know I'll find it. Just not tonight. Tonight I know what it is to be human. Tonight my super skin is still invulnerable, but my Richard is never coming back, and my heart is broken into a million pieces.
* ''Franchise/TeenageMutantNinjaTurtles'': Hamato Yoshi in various continuities, including the [[WesternAnimation/TeenageMutantNinjaTurtles2003 second animated series]]. He loved a woman named Tang Shen who ended up being murdered.
* ''ComicBook/WonderWoman'' [[ComicBook/WonderWoman1942 Vol. 1]]: [[Characters/{{Wonder Woman|TheCharacter}} had her heart broken when the love of her life Steve Trevor died. Then, because this is comics we're talking about, Eros possessed Steve's body and tried to recreate Steve's personality and then Steve was reanimated using a version of himself from another universe.
* ''ComicBook/XMen'': [[Characters/MarvelComicsCyclops Cyclops]] has lost [[Characters/MarvelComicsJeanGrey Jean Grey]] ''twice'' (and He's often misblamed for her loss the second time around). He also lost his first wife, [[Characters/MarvelComicsMadelynePryor Madelyne Pryor]].
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Fan Works]]
* ''Fanfic/ChildrenOfAnElderGod'': Misato was pretty heart-broken and hurt after [[spoiler:her boyfriend Kaji's death.]]
* ''Fanfic/TheFlowerPrincessAndTheAlchemist'': Edward spends a few chapters [[LoveHurts heartbroken and depressed after Orihime rejects him]]. [[EveryoneCanSeeIt Everyone comments]] that [[NotHimself he hasn't been himself lately]] and that he looks [[HeroicBSOD defeated and crushed]].
** Later on, a [[MonsterOfTheWeek villain]] tries to take advantage of Ed's [[GreenEyedMonster pain and jealousy]] by trying to [[BreakThemByTalking manipulate him into turning against Orihime]]. It doesn't work, and [[HesBack Ed]] gives an epic [[ShutUpHannibal Shut up, Hannibal]] speech laced with an implied [[AnguishedDeclarationOfLove Anguish Declaration of Love]] and a massive [[GreenEyedEpiphany Green Eyed Epiphany]] ([[CannotSpitItOut without the]] [[IUhYouToo "I love her"]]), declaring that even if [[LoveTriangle Orihime's love for Ichigo]] [[HopelessSuitor hurts him]], [[DeclarationOfProtection he would always protect her because there would be nothing more painful than seeing her cry]]. This is the closest that [[GreenEyedEpiphany Ed's ever admitted to himself that he has feelings]] for [[LoveInterest Orihime]]. He might still be [[SheIsNotMyGirlfriend in denial]] about being in love with her, but [[LoveEpiphany he's getting there]].
* The ''Fanfic/ForeverCaptain'' series: Steve is depicted this way, until his decision to return to 1947 and his reunion with Peggy.
* ''Fanfic/GhostsOfEvangelion'': After [[spoiler:Asuka's death, Shinji]] is so heart-broken than he loses his will to live.
* ''Fanfic/HouseOfSummers'': ComicBook/JeanGrey dies in the original timeline, and [[ComicBook/{{Cyclops}} her husband]] becomes a broken empty shell in reaction.
-->'''ComicBook/RachelSummers:''' "You know, when you died that night so long ago for me - I didn't just lose my mother, I lost my father too."\
'''Jean:''' (Whispering) "Scott…"\
'''Rachel:''' "Your death left him a broken man. He all but died that night too. Couldn't even bring himself to look at me anymore."
* ''Fanfic/LastChildOfKrypton'':
** After the battle against Zeruel, [[spoiler:when Shinji was supposedly killed-in-action,]] Asuka fell apart.
** In the rewrite, when [[spoiler:Shinji was mortally wounded,]] she was so grief-stricken that she ran out of their apartment and wandered for several hours.
* ''Fanfic/NeonGenesisEvangelionGenocide'':
** Shinji was heartbroken when Asuka was in a coma and he couldn't do anything to help her.
** And later on, when [[spoiler:Asuka was dying,]] he was completely broken. When he realized that she couldn’t answer when he talked to her, he felt his heart breaking.
--->And in that silence, Shinji felt his own heart falling apart.
* It happens several times in ''Fanfic/APrizeForThreeEmpires'' that [[Characters/MarvelComicsCarolDanvers Carol Danvers]] loses some loved one. Her lover Mike Barnett is beaten to death by Mystique, her dear friend and sometimes crush Mar-Vell dies from cancer...
* In ''Fanfic/SupermanOf2499TheGreatConfrontation'', Katherine de Ka'an investigates what happened between her distant ancestors, the first ComicBook/{{Supergirl}} and her first husband Dev-Em. It's only known Kara's diaries stop mentioning him altogether after she moves off world, utterly heartbroken.
-->Dev... Dev... Dev... Kara's diaries were full of his smiles, the sound of his voice calling her name. The feel of his body and the labyrinth of his mind and heart. No, all this was plain for any and all to read. What was less clear was what happened to him.\
Something had sent a grieving Kara Zor-El fleeing back to Rokyn, wounded in spirit and bleeding from the only place she was truly vulnerable: her heart. Something terrible had happened. And yet the diaries did not name the cause. Whether this was because there were parts of it missing... or because Kara Zor-El could not bring herself to speak of it was difficult to know. The only thing that was sure was that, beyond a certain point, the name of Dev-Em was never spoken.
* ''Fanfic/TeriXGumballInBetweenWorlds'': The normally cheery and energetic Gumball becomes an absolute wreck when the love of his life, Penny, is forced to move away from Elmore due to her father losing his job and finding work overseas. However, he has to power through the heartache and defend himself when monsters known as {{Nephilim}}s start invading Elmore.
* ''WesternAnimation/KungFuPanda'' fic ''Fanfic/TheVow'': Lord Shen becomes this when he's banished from home for his crime of [[spoiler:massacring pandas]] while his parents and Lady Lianne, his fiancée, act in an outwardly cold way while doing that (in reality, they're sad at having to do it). Viewing it to be an unjust response to [[IDidWhatIHadToDo his efforts to prevent his fate]], Shen [[FaceHeelTurn swears to conquer China and have his revenge]]. Later, near the end of the story, Shen suffers a VillainousBSOD after [[spoiler:he releases his newlywed wife Lianne [[IWantMyBelovedToBeHappy out of love]]]] and [[WhatHaveIBecome ponders on how far he has fallen]]. It [[InSpiteOfANail doesn't]] prevent him from engaging in his final confrontation with Po in the same way as in canon though. [[spoiler:However, he [[SparedByAdaptation survives]], returns to Lianne and [[BittersweetEnding resigns to live with her]].]]

* In ''Fanfic/ThousandShinji'', [[spoiler:Asuka's death]] broke Shinji down completely, up to the point of losing hope for first time in his life.
* In ''Fanfic/TheSecondTry'', when [[spoiler:[[HumongousMecha Unit-02]] blew itself up]] during the FinalBattle, Shinji believed that [[spoiler:Asuka was dead.]] He was so heart-broken that he almost ended humanity again.
* Shinji doesn't show it outwardly in ''Fanfic/OnceMoreWithFeeling'', but he's traumatized because he abandoned his life’s love when she needed him the most, and he let her die.
* In the ''WesternAnimation/JackieChanAdventures'' fic ''Fanfic/TheUltimateEvil'', [[PrecursorHeroes Lo Pei]] is revealed to have lost his wife to childbirth and raised his son and daughter by himself under Shendu's rule. [[PapaWolf He]] stirred up the rebellion against Shendu only after the Fire Demon forcibly took his beloved daughter Lo Mei as bride. While Pei successfully imprisoned Shendu, he couldn't save Mei in time [[spoiler:to stop her from committing suicide]].
* Cullen gives the very strong impression of being this in ''[[Fanfic/TwiceUponAnAge All This Sh*t is Twice as Weird]]'', when Dorian is the BearerOfBadNews that [[spoiler:[[VideoGame/DragonAgeInquisition the Inquisitors]], among others, have fallen into a Fade rift]]. He can't afford to grieve too openly, because he still has to lead the troops and doesn't want to shatter morale, but it's clear to Dorian (and the reader) that he's completely devastated.
* ''Fanfic/HellsisterTrilogy'':
** [[ComicBook/LegionOfSuperHeroes Dawnstar]] spends the most of the opening story arc distraught over the death of her lover Wildfire, who [[Fanfic/KaraOfRokyn died fighting the Anti-Monitor]].
** After spending years pining over Supergirl, Brainiac 5 has to force himself to get over her when Kara falls for someone else.
* In ''Fanfic/AForceOfFour'', ComicBook/LoisLane resorts to immerse herself in her work as a coping strategy after [[Franchise/{{Superman}} her husband]]'s death.
* In ''Fanfic/AmazingFantasy'', the [[ComicBook/{{Venom}} Venom Symbiote]] is still grieving the death of Eddie Brock in "Let the Devil In". He constantly compares his new partner, Katsuki Bakugou, to Eddie and throws fits when Bakugou tells him that he needs to move on.
* ''Fanfic/ShipsAhoy'': Oprah is this at the beginning of the story, and Part One explains how she got to be that way. Her promotion to Management was welcomed, but it came at the heavy cost of her slowly drifting apart from O'Donahue and eventually culminated with him simultaneously breaking up with her and quitting his job at Odd Squad, where she was left as a brief EmptyShell that transformed her into the TinyTyrannicalGirl that she is known as in the present day and caused her to fall into what is heavily implied to be depression.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Films -- Animation]]
* Manolo in ''WesternAnimation/TheBookOfLife'', [[spoiler:when it looked like Maria dies after saving him from a snake bite]].
* Sgt. Calhoun from ''WesternAnimation/WreckItRalph''. She's programmed to have the "the most tragic backstory ever": [[spoiler: Her fiancé was eaten by a bug at their wedding, which she then kills. Since the bugs become what they eat, Sgt. Calhoun had to kill a ''bug hybrid of her fiancé.'']]
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Multiple Media]]
* The Franchise/MonsterVerse[='s=] iteration of [[Characters/MonsterVerseKingKong King Kong]], the fearsome king of the jungle on Skull Island who slaughters anything that threatens his territory or the inhabitants under his protection.
** As revealed in his movie debut ''Film/KongSkullIsland'', Kong lost his parents and [[LastOfHisKind his entire species]] to the Skullcrawler horde which slaughtered them, and so now he fights tooth and nail against the creatures whenever they emerge, which is also the only thing preventing the Skullcrawlers from overrunning the island.
** In the animated show ''[[WesternAnimation/SkullIsland2023 Skull Island]]'', Kong is ''also'' heartbroken [[spoiler:over the murder of the Island Girl by the Kraken. This initially leaves him despondent, but during the FinalBattle it fuels his rage when he gives the Kraken a NoHoldsBarredBeatdown]].
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Theater]]
* The classic case is ''Theatre/CyranoDeBergerac''; the titular big nosed master swordsman helps his rival and best friend get the girl.
* ''Theatre/MissSaigon'': Given that three years after being forced to abandon her in war-torn Vietnam, Chris is still having nightmares about Kim, he counts as this. His troubled marriage and Kim [[spoiler:dying in his arms at the end of the show]] cinches it.
* The ''Theatre/MrsHawking'' play series: Colonel Reginald Hawking, who devoted himself to some fairly epic military service abroad after coming to the understanding that the wife he loved couldn't stand the sight of him.
* In ''Theatre/ThePhantomOfTheOpera'', the Phantom, Erik, was one of these. One of the main examples comes at the end of Act I.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Western Animation]]
* Finn from ''WesternAnimation/AdventureTime'' succumbs to this first after he is rejected by Princess Bubblegum, and then to a greater extent when [[spoiler: Flame Princess dumps him]]. In both cases, he falls hard and takes quite a while to cheer up again.
* Vinnie becomes this in the 2006 revival of ''WesternAnimation/BikerMiceFromMars''. In "[[GrandFinale Turf Wars]]", he finds out that his old girlfriend Harley is still alive, only to find out that she has [[FaceHeelTurn sided with the Nomad Rats]] because she was horribly scarred during the Plutarkian invasion and believed that the Biker Mice abandoned her. To make things worse, after Harley finally comes to her senses, [[spoiler: she [[NeverFoundTheBody supposedly dies]] after [[HeroicSacrifice taking it upon herself to stop the regenerator from going critical and causing Olympus Mons to erupt]].]]
* WesternAnimation/DannyPhantom had one after he was put under a [[LovePotion love song]] by Ember into believe he was completely in love with Sam(antha). Though [[ShipTease she liked the attention]], even though he was going into StalkerWithACrush territory, he was unable to focus on anything but her almost causing their death several times. To snap him out of it, she kisses [[JerkJock Dash]] which causes him extreme heartbreak. However, he was able to deal with this by [[UnstoppableRage fighting Ember]].
* An understated example from ''WesternAnimation/DCShowcaseGreenArrow'': While Green Arrow fights off her would-be assassins, the ten-year-old Princess Perdita remains level-headed and calm throughout. While applying a field bandage to Green Arrow's leg, she reveals that her father had died the night before, and she was now queen of Vlatava.
-->'''Green Arrow''': You're even braver than I thought.
* This has happened to Brooklyn from ''WesternAnimation/{{Gargoyles}}'' three times -- two in the canon TV episodes and once in the canon comic book. He finally finds his true love in his ''Timedancer'' adventures, Katana, and starts a family by the time he gets to his home time period.
* Razer from ''[[WesternAnimation/GreenLanternTheAnimatedSeries Green Lantern]]'' is this after [[spoiler:Atrocitus]] started a war that resulted in the death of his wife alongside many others. Kilowog also lost his family and home planet, but finds another alien and becomes a part of her family.
* ''WesternAnimation/SheRaAndThePrincessesOfPower'': In the end of Season 4, Hordak has a nervous breakdown and cries (probably for the first time) after Double Trouble tells him that Catra not only lied that Entrapta had betrayed him but sent her to Beast Island. Knowing how lethal the place is, and that happened ''months'' ago, he naturally thinks that she is dead by now.
* In ''WesternAnimation/StevenUniverse'', Pearl is still mourning Rose Quartz, which is a large part of her character arc and the driving force behind several of her more "iffy" actions.
* ''WesternAnimation/YoungJustice'': [[spoiler:Just as Artemis and Wally are reunited after her TheMole mission with Kaldur, Wally dies saving the Earth. Artemis then takes on the Tigress name full time in order to cope with his death.]]
** In Season 4, it emerged that [[spoiler:[[CanonWelding the above-mentioned Razer, four years after he started trekking the universe in search of Aya]], had been led on a wild goose chase for that long by New God Metron, who wished to study his Red and Blue Lantern rings. His rage had been pushed to his limits and his hope all but depleted, but he came to accept both as being part of who he was upon seeing that he had almost put Forager through the same pain of losing his first love. Now wielding both rings, he restarted his journey anew.]]
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Real Life]]
* Ismail I of Persia was a YoungConqueror regarded as supernaturally invincible and ordained by God, but was left a broken man after his entire RoyalHarem including his favorite wife were kidnapped by the Turkish sultan Selim the Grim when he defeated Ismail at Chaldiran. He even fell to drinking in order to drown his sorrows, despite alcohol being forbidden in Islam -- he just didn't care anymore and died shortly afterwards of despair.
* Supposedly T.E. Lawrence aka "Lawrence of Arabia" aka "Emir Dynamite" loved Janet Laurie who rejected him.
* UsefulNotes/TheodoreRoosevelt was heartbroken over the death of his son in UsefulNotes/WorldWarI. The [[{{Determinator}} sheer will]] that kept him in good health quickly faded. DeathByDespair soon followed.
** And decades before that, his first wife died on the same day as his mother did. His late wife's use of "Teddy" as an AffectionateNickname for him is why he hated hearing it from anyone else.
* An iconic picture taken after the [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Our_Lady_of_the_Angels_School_fire Our Lady of the Angels School Fire]] shows [[http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_zmnThRVdmqI/Sd1ZuyKaLSI/AAAAAAAAAWg/wXp0MwhbdPI/s400/sm_CarryingJohnJajkowski.JPG tough and rugged firefighter Richard Scheidt openly weeping while holding the body of John Jajkowski in his arms]]. This image is credited as the poster image of major fire-safety reform.
** Which is eerily similar to a photo of firefighter Chris Fields holding the body of one-year-old [[https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/5/54/Firefighterbabyocb.jpg Baylee Almon]], a victim of the [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oklahoma_City_bombing Oklahoma City bombing]]. [[{{TearJerker}} Damn]].
* In 2012, a picture was taken at the scene of a fatal car accident, where a cop had broken down, and was praying in tears on the side of the road. The victims had been seven and nine years old.
* UsefulNotes/JulieDAubigny was a famed opera singer, duelist, and all-around troublemaker in 17th century France, who was notorious for leaving a trail of broken hearts wherever she went. However, when her last lover, Marie Louise Thérèse, died, Julie was [[LadykillerInLove so profoundly heartbroken]] that she retired from the opera and from public life, [[BrokenBird and spent the rest of her short life in a convent]].
