Context Main / HaveWeMet

Go To

A StockPhrase. Upon what is supposedly their first meeting, [[AliceAndBob Alice asks Bob]] "Have we met?" or "Do I know you?" There are a myriad of possible reasons for this dialogue, such as:

* They ''do'' know each other but for some reason don't remember. Maybe the other character is a ForgottenChildhoodFriend or LongLostRelative. Maybe they've been subject to LaserGuidedAmnesia and [[AmnesiaMissedASpot it missed a spot]]. Or maybe Alice just has a bad memory.
* They ''do'' know each other, but Alice doesn't recognize Bob (for example, he is in disguise or [[OldFriendNewGender has transitioned]]).
* They ''do'' know each other, but are pretending not to. Perhaps Bob is deliberately ignoring Alice, or Alice is just teasing.
* They ''don't'' know each other, but Bob reminds Alice of someone. Maybe he's an IdenticalStranger, or has UncannyFamilyResemblance to a relative of his that Alice actually knows. Might lead into YouRemindMeOfX.
* Time travel, {{reincarnation}}, or dimensional shenanigans. Alice ''has'' met Bob somewhere else in spacetime, but not in this particular time/dimension/life (or [[HaveWeMetYet not yet]]). But because of that, she thinks he's familiar anyway. Compare FlashSideways.
* Metafictional humor. Alice or Bob is making an ActorAllusion, or are part of a CastingGag where they played characters who had a relationship in a different show, or they are ThoseTwoActors, and the writers wanted to [[LampshadeHanging point that out]].

SuperTrope to HaveWeMetYet, where they ''have'' met...sometime in the future, and the [[TimeTravel time-traveler]] is just getting caught up to speed; compare TimeTravelTenseTrouble. If Bob is not trying to tip the others off to their association, he might respond with a WeDoNotKnowEachOther-type of phrase.

* In a chapter of ''Manga/RanmaOneHalf'', Akane gets brainwashed (literally, with shampoo on the scalp) to forget Ranma. She says this to Ranma multiple times in the chapter, but also once to her dad as a joke.
* In the first episode of ''Anime/MartianSuccessorNadesico'' Yurika runs into Akito and asks if she's met him before. Akito says that they've never met, not realizing until Yurika has let on that she's the girl he was friends with as a child.
* Literature/HaruhiSuzumiya asks Kyon this during their first conversation. [[spoiler:She has in fact met him before, but Kyon hasn't; he will meet her [[TimeTravelTenseTrouble three years ago a couple of months later]].]]

* PlayedForLaughs in a ''Manga/SailorMoon'' webcomic, where Usagi thinks that she hears her mom, only to find it coming from [[GirlyLesbian Michiru]]. In the original dub, Barbara Radecki voiced both.
* At the end of ''Anime/SerialExperimentsLain'', [[spoiler:Lain [[AscendToAHigherPlaneOfExistence ascends into the Wired]], erasing her from existence. The only people who cared about her--her father and Alice--are the only ones that feel that something is off, but shrug it off. In the epilogue, an adult Alice is taking a nightly stroll through the city when she notices that an awfully familiar girl is watching her. Alice, being a teacher, asks if they've met before, possibly if she was one of her students in the past. Lain, [[WhenSheSmiles smiling]], says no, they've never met, and the two bid farewell. The series closes with Lain saying goodbye to the viewers and that she'll always be with them.]]
* At the end of ''Anime/YourName'', [[spoiler:because a PlotTwist is that Taki's body is three years later in the future than Mitsuha's body, the events taking place after Mitsuha and her village are killed by the comet are altered when they evacuate the village in time. Taki and Mitsuha also completely forget about the whole bodyswapping ordeal and everything related due to this, but then they cross paths in Tokyo, with the movie ending with the two asking if they know each other.]]

* ''ComicBook/{{Supergirl}}'': In the fifth of her 90's solo, Linda Danvers is introduced to Dick Malverne, and both teens stare transfixed at each other until Dick finally asks if they have met before, a nod to the original Linda and Dick being lovers in Pre-Crisis continuity.

When he bumps into Asuka for the "first" time, Shinji has the strange feeling that he has met her before, despite being certain that this is the first time he has ever seen her.
* ''Fanfic/FateStarryNight'': After tearing through a swarm of bladed wing worms trying to break into a house, Jack sees a young girl sleeping soundly in bed that feels like Ritsuka. By killing the bugs, Jack gets the feeling that she's saved her Mommy, but she doesn't understand why, implying that the little girl is the female version of him. She also gets the feeling that the mud girls that have been popping up around the city are her Mommy, giving her the urge to eviscerate them.
* In ''Fanfic/HeroicMyth'', Loki and Freya can't shake the feeling that they ought to know Saber and Lancer, despite being sure that they've never met in their lives, a nod to their shared origins in Myth/NorseMythology.
* In ''Fanfic/ImaginarySeas'', Percy has already met all of the Olympian gods in his own lifetime and treats them all like old acquaintances. By contrast, none of the gods had ever heard of him because he didn't exist in their history. Athena in particular, or rather her terminal Minerva, is baffled when Percy calls her his mother-in-law.
* In ''Fanfic/PokemonResetBloodlines'', Arceus grants Ash [[PeggySue the ability to restore the memories of his friends and Pokémon before being sent back in time.]] However, it only works to its full on his Pokémon, and with his human friends it only works partially or might not even work at all. As a result, when Misty and Iris make physical contact with him, they gain a strange sense of familiarity, but they don't understand why, since he's unable to restore their memories proper.
* ''Fanfic/TheVolatileverse'' has Jason Todd starting unaware he was dimensionally displaced when he catches a glimpse of Batman and Robin, so the vigilante really wonders why the new Boy Wonder feels familiar. The world-hopping comes to light with the reveal that Robin is actually his predecessor Dick Grayson, here thirteen years old.
* ''Fanfic/LiveAHeroMHA''; Izuku wonders this of Tenya Iida when they first meet after they get accepted into U.A. This is because Tenya's older brother, Tensei, was the Pro-Hero that rescued Izuku when he escaped from the League of Villains six years prior.
* {{Averted}} in ''Fanfic/YouWereMyBestFriend''. The fanfic ends when Bloom and Aisha meet again but given Bloom's reluctance to believe Princess Aisha is her childhood best friend Layla. Add Aisha's unconscious state and the opportunity to ask this question is left hanging.

* ''WesternAnimation/MadagascarEscape2Africa'', After seeing Zuba, his dad, for the first time since he was a cub, Alex, who couldn't remember him because he spent most of his life in New York, says this to Zuba:
-->'''Alex:''' You look familiar. Do I know you?
* ''WesternAnimation/{{Tarzan}}'': Clayton says it after hearing Tarzan say his name, which he learned from Jane. Later, he uses it more sarcastically when Tarzan is captured by his minions.
* ''WesternAnimation/TopCatAndTheBeverlyHillsCats'': Late in the film, the gang ends up in a car wash while trying to evade a dogcatcher; Benny recognizes the car wash girl, asking "Haven't I seen you somewhere before?" and another of the gang calling it one of the oldest lines in the book. In this case though, Benny's right -- the girl is Amy Vandergelt, niece of Gertrude Vandergelt and the rightful heir to her fortune, and he recognized her from her portrait, which was hanging on the mansion's wall.

* ''WebVideo/DoctorHorriblesSingAlongBlog''
-->'''Cpt. Hammer:''' You look ''horribly'' familiar.
* ''Film/DejaVu2006'' when Claire, who just witnessed her rescuer, [[spoiler:Doug, get killed in an explosion, sees his present-day self (as opposed to the one who traveled back in time and was killed) appear. He then asks her this question when she is on the verge of tears at seeing him. Doug seems to regain his future self's memories of Claire at the end of the movie]].
* ''Film/ShesTheMan'': Duke runs into Viola out of her disguise as Sebastian
-->'''Duke:''' Do I know you?\
'''Viola:''' ''[in a high-pitched girl's voice]'' No!
* ''Film/AngelHeart'': When Harold Angel visits his new client Mr. Cyphre, the latter notes that Angel somehow looks familiar, but Angel doesn't think they've met before. [[spoiler:It turns out that Cyphre is actually Satan. He has a contract on Angel's soul, and was just messing with the amnesiac Angel.]]
* ''Film/DieAnotherDay'': When James Bond and Gustav Graves are introduced, Graves looks at him funny and asks if they've met before. Bond says he'd remember. 78* ''Film/TheChroniclesOfRiddick2004'': When the Lord Marshal meets Riddick and gives him the knife belonging to the warrior that Riddick has just slain, he wonders if they've met before. The extended version of the film makes this literal: [[spoiler:the Lord Marshal is the one who attempted to kill Riddick as a newborn infant by strangling him with his own umbilical cord.]]
* Franchise/MarvelCinematicUniverse:
** ''Film/ThorRagnarok'', Bruce Banner and Valkyrie kept having the weird feeling of somehow knowing each other, as Bruce doesn't remember what he did as the Hulk while Valkyrie had no idea that the two are the same person until the end of the film.

-->'''Kang:''' You're an Avenger? ... Have I killed you before?
* ''Film/Ronin1998'':
** Lampshaded when the pack of hired mercenaries are assembled for their first job briefing, and Spence (Sean Bean), meets the older and obviously more experienced operator Sam (Robert De Niro), and asks "Do I know you?" Sam replies dryly: "I don't think so. I'd remember." This seemingly throwaway character line later gains a lot more meaning when [[spoiler: we find out that Spence is a poseur who doesn't belong with the rest of the team, and Sam is the one to out him and humiliate him, de facto placing himself in charge of the operation.]] The question and the answer both ascend to the status of {{Arc Words}} by the end of the film, as numerous variations occur throughout. The trope is also played straight later in another classic character moment for Gene Reno's Vincent:
--->'''Thug:''' How do I know you?\
'''Vincent:''' ''[hard stare]'' Vienna.
** Again a slight variation is employed again with Sam calling out to a "friend from highschool" [[spoiler: fellow CIA operative and former or even current colleague]]" on the street, asking for directions:
--->'''Old Friend:''' I'm sorry, do you know me? How do you know I speak English?\
'''Sam:''' You're carrying an English newspaper...
** The film gives us the tiniest shred of doubt that Sam doesn't know Spence from the beginning, when Sam has this early exchange with his French counterpart Vincent, who suspects [[spoiler:Sam's status as a CIA operative]]:
--->'''Sam:''' Whenever there is any doubt, there is no doubt. That's the first thing they teach you.\
'''Vincent:''' ''[quizzically]'' Who taught you?\
'''Sam:''' I don't remember. That's the second thing they teach you.
* Hilariously played with in ''Film/TroubleInParadise''. Francois insists to Gaston that they've never met before, even though Gaston was the one who robbed him at the beginning of the movie (by pretending to be a doctor wanting to inspect his tonsils). Then, after an offhand remark by the Major, Francois starts to remember how he ''does'' know Gaston.
-->'''Francois:''' Tonsils! Positively tonsils!
* ''Film/TheMatrixResurrections'' has Trinity basically having this reaction to meeting Neo for the first time since the Matrix was rebooted.
* During Lurcio and Gorgo's wrestling match in ''Film/UpPompeii'', they slowly come to the realisation that they were in the same SlaveGalley many years ago.

* ''Series/{{Angel}}'': DefiedTrope In "Blood Money", neither Angel nor Anne recognize one another, despite having met briefly three years earlier. For Angel, who spent centuries in a Hell dimension inbetween, it's been even longer than that. 109* ''Series/ArrestedDevelopment'' episode "Forget Me Now"

* During the ''Series/{{Arrowverse}}'' crossover ''Series/CrisisOnEarthX'', Barry asks this of a waitress who seems a little too thrilled to be at his and Iris' wedding. The waitress - heavily implied to be their KidFromTheFuture - has a look of brief panic before [[SuspiciouslySpecificDenial insisting that she's a complete and total stranger.]]
* In Series 16 Episode 48 of ''Series/HolbyCity'', Jac and Fletch meet for the first time and Fletch asks Jac this. This is an allusion to the fact that they played a popular couple in ''Series/TheBill'' and the actors and writers wanted to reference it.
-->'''Adrian Fletcher:''' Adrian Fletcher. I'm the new ward manager on AAU. Have we met?\
'''Jac Naylor:''' I'd remember.
* In the finale of ''Series/KamenRiderBuild'', Sento wakes up in [[spoiler:a merger between his universe and one without [[BigBad Evolto]], where none of the series's events ever happened,]] and looks around for his friends. None of them remember him, but Misora seems to recognize him and asks this. [[spoiler:Unfortunately, Misora just recognizes him as Taro Satou, the guy whose face was given to Sento in the original universe.]]
* ''Series/{{Staged}}'': Creator/MichaelSheen has worked with Creator/SamuelLJackson before, but [[Film/{{Unthinkable}} he had a bag on his head at the time]].
* ''Series/StarTrekDeepSpaceNine'' episode "Emissary"
-->'''Commander Benjamin Sisko:''' It's been a long time, Captain.\
'''Captain Jean-Luc Picard:''' Have we met before?\
'''Commander Sisko:''' Yes, sir. We met in battle. I was on the ''Saratoga'' at Wolf 359[[note]]Where his wife was killed by the Borg cube commanded by Locutus (Picard)[[/note]].
* ''Series/TheSixMillionDollarMan'' "The Bionic Woman: Part 2"
-->'''Joseph Ronaugh:''' Colonel Steven Austin. I can't tell you what a pleasure it is to see you face to face again.\
'''Col. Steve Austin:''' Have we met before?
* Subverted famously in ''Series/{{Seinfeld}}'', such as in this example:
-->'''George, into the phone:''' Jerry! Jerry, you gotta help me!\
'''Jerry:''' ''(Pauses, smiling)'' Who is this?
* ''Series/{{Misfits}}'' [=S1E4=], after Curtis rewound time so that he never got his ASBO. Happens repeatedly, even! With the same character, too!
-->'''Curtis:''' Oy, Nathan, I need your help!\
'''Nathan:''' ...Do I know you? ''[glances at Curtis, who is kneeling]'' Are you taking a shit? There's a guy over here taking a shit!\
'''Curtis:''' I'm not taking a shit!\
'''Nathan:''' How do I know you again?

* In the final minutes of the series finale of the SoapOpera ''Series/TheCity1995'' (a reworking of ''Series/{{Loving}}''), Jocelyn returns a call from Sydney Chase, only to reach her secretary, who tells her that she's not available. Jocelyn asks "Have we spoken before?", which the woman denies, but after she hangs up, we see that they ''have''--it's local psychopath Molly Malone, who escaped from prison and killed Sydney before she could warn everyone.
* ''Series/{{Wednesday}}'': When Mayor Walker and Marilyn Thornhill first talk, he states that she looks familiar but can't quite place where he's seen her before. While this appears to be a reference to Creator/ChristinaRicci [[CastingGag having played Wednesday]] in [[Film/TheAddamsFamily the]] [[Film/AddamsFamilyValues 90s]], [[spoiler: Marilyn is actually the [[FakingTheDead presumed dead]] Laurel Gates, whom Walker knew when she was a child.]]
* ''Series/GeneralHospital'''s Felicia awakened from an accident surrounded by her loved ones, only to cheerfully name drop this trope, revealing that she has amnesia.

* In ''VideoGame/TheElderScrollsIVOblivion'', in the town Chorrol some people make remarks about how they met one of the inhabitants in a totally different town, and he acted as if he had never met them. When you investigate this, it turns out the person in question proves to be the long lost, assumed dead, other half of an identical twin.
* In ''VideoGame/SuperRobotWarsOriginalGeneration'', Masaki asks Gilliam if they know each other. Gilliam assures them that they don't, although he knows the Masakis from the ''Hero Senki'' and Classic ''VideoGame/SuperRobotWars'' timelines.
* In the adult timeline of ''VideoGame/TheLegendOfZeldaOcarinaOfTime'', Link can visit Lon Lon Ranch and ride the horses. When Link first talks to Ingo, he will ask Link if he knows him. 173* This exchange from ''VideoGame/MortalKombat11'':
-->'''Franchise/RoboCop''': Haven't we done this before?\
'''Franchise/{{Terminator}}''': I have no record of a previous encounter.\
'''[=RoboCop=]''': [[Comicbook/RoboCopVersusTheTerminator We have met...]] [[WebAnimation/DeathBattle I'm sure]] [[WebVideo/EpicRapBattlesOfHistory of it]].
* In ''VideoGame/LikeADragonInfiniteWealth'', when invited to hang out at Survive Bar, Kiryu is shocked to discover that the bartender there bears a striking resemblance to Osamu Kashiwagi, his former captain from the Tojo Clan. While it had been years since they last saw each other after Kashiwagi appeared to have [[VideoGame/Yakuza3 died]], and they are both noticeably older, the two recognize each other right away, but respect one another's need to maintain their discretion, so the Bartender continues to address Kiryu by his pseudonym of "Taichi Suzuki", and Kiryu, in turn, regards him as nothing more than a modest bartender.
* [[VideoGame/AkatsukiBlitzkampf Akatsuki]] lampshades this word for word in his guest appearance in ''VideoGame/UnderNightInBirth'' II with anyone who was in ''VideoGame/BlazblueCrossTagBattle'' as a rare victory quote.

* Two examples in ''VisualNovel/DaughterForDessert'':
** The protagonist thinks Cecilia looks familiar when she first shows up at the diner.
** The protagonist thinks Saul looks familiar when they first meet. This is a subversion, because although he thinks Saul might be related to Lainie’s family lawyer, it’s never stated for sure.
* ''VisualNovel/DoubleHomework'':
** The protagonist initially thinks Amy looks familiar. Eventually, [[spoiler:Amy is revealed to be a princess]].
** Averted with the protagonist and Dennis. The protagonist initially has no recollection of Dennis at all, and Dennis knows exactly where he met the protagonist. Eventually, the protagonist realizes that they met briefly after his breakup with Rachel.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Webcomics]]
* ''Webcomic/BobAndGeorge'' generally keeps track of who met who, especially regarding the titular Bob. Bob spends most of the strip in different alternate dimensions, so even though he's a major villain, only a few characters know who he is for a good chunk of the strip. Bob, however, knows who they are because he watched his brother play ''Mega Man'', which leads to a moment where he barges into Dr. Wily's lair and makes demands for several strips, before Dr. Wily interrupts to ask who he is. To be fair to Bob, they did interact once, and to be fair to Dr. Wily, it was several years ago from his point of view.
* ''Webcomic/ElGoonishShive'': Total strangers recognizing each other became a common occurrence in [[SupernaturalHotspotTown Moperville]] after what is known as the [[https://www.egscomics.com/comic/hope-009 "Do I Know You?" Anomaly]], thanks to a unicorn accidentally pulling almost everyone in town into a magical SharedDream one night.
* In ''Webcomic/TheInexplicableAdventuresOfBob,'' Galatea is confused when Riboflavin [[https://bobadventures.thecomicseries.com/comics/400 mistakes her]] for Molly.

[[folder:Western Animation]]
* In the ''WesternAnimation/AmericanDad'' episode "Finances with Wolves":

'''Klaus:''' Oh, you know, I'm just one of those black Germans that seems familiar to everyone, hmm?
* ''WesternAnimation/AvatarTheLastAirbender'' Suki is out of her uniform and full face makeup, and Sokka doesn't recognize her. She decides to play this up for a good laugh.
-->'''Sokka:''' Is there a problem?\
'''Female Security Guard:''' Yeah, I got a problem with you. I've seen your type before. Probably sarcastic, think you're hilarious. And let me guess, you're traveling with the Avatar.\
'''Sokka:''' Do I know you?\
'''Guard:''' You mean you don't remember? Maybe you remember this. ''(kisses him)''\
'''Sokka:''' Suki!
** Subverted in a later episode when Sokka attempts a similar stunt while disguised as a helmeted Fire Nation prison guard, and Suki clocks him one before she recognizes him.
* In one episode of ''WesternAnimation/{{Gargoyles}}'', Owen Burnett is asked this question by another, identical-but-for-hair-color majordomo named Preston Vogel, and Owen replies, "I assure you, we have not." This is not a case of OnlySixFaces, though, since [[spoiler:Puck deliberately chose the man as his inspiration for his Owen alter ego.]]
* ''WesternAnimation/SpiderManUnlimited''
-->'''Spider-Man:''' Electro?\
'''Lester:''' Have we met?\
