->'''Vegeta:''' A pure Saiyan's hair does not get "shaggy". It maintains the same shape from the day that he is born!\

Hairstyle Inertia is the phenomenon where adult or teenage characters who {{Flashback}} to a time in their childhood are frequently shown to have the exact same hairstyle, though those with long hair usually have shorter -- but not short -- hair. Pigtails, ponytails, braids, or other hairstyles that require long hair are also shown to be stubbier and shorter; is often used for SpinoffBabies.

It is not an ImportantHaircut -- those happen in series and are, as the title says, important to the plot. It is also not an ExpositoryHairstyleChange, which usually does not flashback to a character's childhood. This trope deals only with characters keeping the same hairstyle from childhood until the present time. The opposite of this trope is HairTodayGoneTomorrow. This trope can be the opposite of the FunnyFlashbackHaircut, but also an example if the unchanging hairstyle is used as a joke.

Additionally, this trope sometimes applies to some characters in a work of fiction, but not to others.

Similar to SameClothesDifferentYear, only with hair.

And, barring the flashback, this may be TruthInTelevision, but just as likely is not.

The usual reason is a distinctive hairstyle can be a quick characterization trope, especially in Anime, Manga, Comic Books, and Western Animation, therefore it can be a shorthand to say this younger/older character is the same person.

[[folder:Anime & Manga]]
* In ''Manga/AnaSatsujin'', when Kurosu's life is flashing before his eyes, we see that he's had the exact same haircut since infancy.
* Averted with four out of the main six in ''Anime/AnoHanaTheFlowerWeSawThatDay''. Menma is justified as being a ghost, so she has the same haircut as a kid. Yukiatsu just has a short, simple haircut.
%%* Kou/Ric and Nino from ''Manga/ArakawaUnderTheBridge''.%%Administrivia/ZeroContextExample
* In ''Manga/AsteroidInLove'', Mira's hairstyle is the same now as she was in the flashback, having shoulder-length hair with a little tied up on the right side. The only difference is now she wears a star-shaped hairpin, due to the one encounter she had in that flashback.
%%* Azuki and Mashiro from ''Manga/{{Bakuman}}''.%%Administrivia/ZeroContextExample
%%* Ichigo in ''Manga/{{Bleach}}''.%%Administrivia/ZeroContextExample
* In the manga adaptation of ''[[Literature/TheSagaOfDarrenShan Cirque du Freak]]'', Darren is badly burnt during his Trials of Initiation in Vampire Mountain, and his hair doesn't grow back for 6 years. When a mysterious process known as The Purge makes his hair grow back (and makes him [[OlderThanTheyLook finally]] age from 12 to 16), he ends up with in it the same style as it was before, a basic, fluffy shonen hero style with one large spike that echoes that of his mentor, Mr. Crepsley.
* Suzaku, Nunnally, and Euphemia in ''Anime/CodeGeass'' all have more or less same hairstyles as children and as teenagers 7 years later. Lelouch, on the other hand, had a cute chin-length bob when he was a 10-year-old prince, and has a less conspicuous but still elegant style as a teenager hiding his identity.
* [[ZigZaggingTrope Zig-zagged]] in ''Anime/Danganronpa3TheEndOfHopesPeakHighSchool''. Most of the returning characters have new hairstyles depending on the time period, but any of the new characters hairstyles remain unchanged whenever the anime shows them.
* ''Anime/DigimonAdventure'':
** Tai's big hair is the same in all flashbacks to his childhood. It's likewise the same in the second season. But in the DistantFinale, TK's narration says "Tai ''finally'' cut his hair."
** Yolei's hair is also tied back in the same bandanna both in flashbacks to when she's a child and in the DistantFinale.
** Averted for the others, as they all have different hairstyles in between the two seasons. Sora notably has BoyishShortHair in the first, and it has grown to her shoulders in the second.
* ''Franchise/DragonBall'':
** Goku's hair is so static that on the few occasions he suffers some minor hair damage, it immediately returns to its regular state one panel later.
** Lampshaded in the Cell Saga, and the trope [[HandWave was even made to be a Saiyan racial trait]] (it does not, however, apply to part-Saiyans). After Vegeta and Trunks use the time chamber to fit a year of training into a day, Bulma is confused to see Trunks has long hair while Vegeta looks exactly the same.
--->'''Vegeta:''' A pure Saiyan's hair does not get "shaggy". It maintains the same shape from the day that he is born.\
'''Goku:''' What do you know? I never noticed!\
'''Bulma:''' You never noticed you never needed a haircut?
** This is a bit of a continuity error, however (at least in [[Anime/DragonBallZ the anime]]), as all prior instances of showing Vegeta as a child had him without his widow's peak. This has been rectified as of the ''[[Anime/DragonBallZBattleOfGods Battle of Gods]]'' film.
** Apparently doesn't apply to facial hair. Vegeta grows a mustache during ''Anime/DragonBallGT'' and later shaves it off. He also has a change in hairstyle being cropped shorter while it still spikes upward. In ''Anime/DragonBallSuper'', Vegeta and, yes, Goku grow [[TimePassageBeard beards]] during their training in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber.
* Played straight for most of the characters in ''Manga/Eyeshield21''. Especially noticeable in Sena, who has a serious case of ShonenHair. Hiruma, Musashi, Mamori, and Agon are aversions; Hiruma started dyeing and styling his hair in middle school, Musashi grew his hair out after becoming a construction worker, Mamori's had a few slight variations in her haircut, and Agon went through at least five different hairstyles in middle school alone.
%%* Natsu from ''Manga/FairyTail''.%%Administrivia/ZeroContextExample
* Ruriko Tamiya, the titular "Dissection-chan" in ''Manga/FragmentsOfHorror'', not only keeps her hairstyle from childhood to adulthood, but also until her death from old age in the future of the story.
* In the ''Anime/GirlsUndPanzer'' prequel manga, Miho, her sister Maho and their mother Shiho all have the same hairstyles as they do in the anime six years later. Even Kikuyo, a maid who makes an appearance in the manga, has the same hairstyle.
* Wendy Garret of ''Anime/GunXSword'' has the same [[GirlishPigtails twin braids]] as a very young girl that she dons in the present of the series. [[spoiler:She's still wearing her hair that way years later, when she's shown as an adult.]]
%%* Rei in ''Manga/HighschoolOfTheDead''.%%Administrivia/ZeroContextExample
* Most characters in ''Manga/KaguyaSamaLoveIsWar'' are shown with different hairstyles as kids or even a year prior to the start of the series. Iino is the one glaring exception, having worn her hair in the same loose pigtails ever since she was a child (with an ImagineSpot in the ''Official Doujinshi'' spin-off showing her still having that hair as an adult) which helps reflect the fact that she's never emotionally matured. [[spoiler:Hayasaka's FlashForward chapter near the end of the series reveals that she starts letting her hair down in college as a sign of her finally loosening up.]]
%%* Hazumu and Tomari in ''Manga/KashimashiGirlMeetsGirl''.%%Administrivia/ZeroContextExample
%%* Mio, Ritsu, Yui, and Nodoka in ''Manga/KOn''.%%Administrivia/ZeroContextExample
* In the ''Anime/MagicalGirlLyricalNanoha TheMovie 1st Tribute Comics'' that doubled as promotions for the four manga running at the time of TheMovie's release, the ''[[http://img843.imageshack.us/img843/8812/comics003.jpg Lyrical Almanac]]'' has Subaru making up her version of how she and Teana first met, complete with child versions of the two that were still sporting their teenage hairstyles from ''[[Anime/MagicalGirlLyricalNanohaStrikers StrikerS]]''.
* ''Manga/MagiLabyrinthOfMagic'': The BigGood Sinbad has been shown to have the same, choppy, side-swept bangs and knee-length ponytail with an IdiotHair since he was fourteen, fifteen years ago. Yunan and Scheherazade have also had the same hairstyles they have now.
%%* Subaru, Tasuku, Yoite, Kouichi, and Gau from ''Manga/NabariNoOu''.%%Administrivia/ZeroContextExample
* [[ZigZaggingTrope Zig-zagged]] in ''Manga/{{Naruto}}'' with many characters:
** Practically every major character besides Chouji, Lee, Tsunade, Sakura, Ino, Nagato, Kushina, Hinata, and Hanabi. The DistantFinale also has most of the characters having new hairstyles.
** Sakura is an interesting case. Flashbacks show that as a child, she had short hair, but grew it long due to rumors that Sasuke liked long haired girls. She starts the series with long hair, but has an ImportantHaircut in the second arc. Sakura keeps her hair more-or-less the same length from then on, bar some flashback where she grew out her hair between Part I and Part II and her hair being slightly longer as an adult.
** Hinata has probably had the most hairstyle changes out of any character. In childhood flashbacks, Hinata had the same hairstyle she had in Part I. Come Part II, Hinata has grown her hair out. TheStinger of ''Anime/TheLastNarutoTheMovie'' and ''Manga/{{Boruto}}'' shows Hinata with short hair again as an adult, though it's in a different style than before.
* ''Anime/NeonGenesisEvangelion'': Rei is actually a subversion. If you look closely, while she still has the same pageboy bob, the [[spoiler: first clone]] has her bangs parted in a manner similar to Yui and Shinji, while present-day Rei has her hair hanging into the middle of her forehead.
%%** Shinji, Asuka (substituting elastic bands for A10 Nerve Clips), and Misato.%%Administrivia/ZeroContextExample
%%* Maya from ''Anime/OccultAcademy'' (down to an identical dress).%%Administrivia/ZeroContextExample
* Pretty much everyone in ''Manga/OnePiece''. A bit odd that many characters choose to change their hairstyles all at once.
%%* Kyoya and Tamaki in ''Manga/OuranHighSchoolHostClub''.%%Administrivia/ZeroContextExample
* ''Franchise/{{Pokemon}}'':
** ''Manga/PokemonAdventures'': Characters rarely change hairstyles throughout their lifetime. Even Agatha and Professor Oak had the same haircuts as kids.
** ''Anime/PokemonTheSeries'': Most characters keep their hairstyles in flashbacks. Misty even had a sidetail when she was an infant.
** In ''Manga/PokemonZensho'', Daisy had the same haircut as a child and Green had the same haircut as a baby. Misty is also depicted with her signature ponytail when she was younger.
* ''Anime/PrettyCure'':
** ''Anime/FutariWaPrettyCureSplashStar'': In the pilot's flashback to how Saki and Mai met, nine year old Saki is wearing the exact same small ponytail and three hair clips as fourteen-year-old Saki.
** ''Anime/FreshPrettyCure'': All appearances of young Love show her with the same pigtails as her teen self, just shorter.
** ''Anime/SuitePrettyCure'': The flashback to when Hibiki and Kanade used to be friends shows their child forms to have the same hairstyle as their teen selves. However, a later episode shows young Hibiki with OdangoHair rather than two small pigtails.
** ''Anime/SmilePrecure'': When all of the Cures are turned into small children, their little forms still have the exact same hairstyles, just a little shorter.
** ''Anime/DokiDokiPrecure'': Mana has been wearing the same flip since she was a baby.
** ''Anime/HappinessChargePrettyCure'': Flashbacks in Episode 31 show Yuko to still have her same usual bob as a small child.
** ''Anime/GoPrincessPrettyCure'': The first episode opens with a kindergarten-age Haruka wearing a small ponytail with flowers. She is still wearing the exact same hairstyle at age fourteen, when she's heading off to boarding school.
** ''Anime/MahoGirlsPrecure'': Mirai has had chin-length hair with a braid and little bow since she was a baby. The only time she doesn't is in the final episode's flashback to her as a newborn.
** ''Anime/KiraKiraPrecureALaMode'': Episode 1 opens with six-year-old Ichika wearing pigtails with strawberry clips; fourteen-year-old Ichika still wears them.
** ''Anime/HugttoPrettyCure'': Hana starts the show by messing up cutting her bangs, making them uneven and messy. She continues to wear them like this into adulthood, even after becoming a successful CEO and [[spoiler:giving birth to Hagumi/Hugtan]].
** ''Anime/StarTwinklePrettyCure'': Flashbacks to when her father started his trip show younger Hikaru to still have the same pigtails as present-day Hikaru.
** ''Anime/HealinGoodPrettyCure'': Nodoka is still wearing a bob as a child; the only change she gets when she grows up is the addition of hair clips.
** ''Anime/TropicalRougePrettyCure'': In Episode 37, when Manatsu is turned into a small child, she still wears a side ponytail like her teen self.
** ''Anime/HirogaruSkyPrettyCure'': The younger version of Sora seen in the intro still has the same side ponytail as fourteen-year-old Sora.
* The Inner Soldiers of ''Anime/SailorMoon'' always have the same hairstyles in the original anime. In their previous lives, as children in this life, as their current teenage selves, and as centuries-old adults in the future -- all of the Inners have the exact same hairstyles.
* In ''Manga/{{Saki}}'', this can be played straight or averted, as flashbacks take place anywhere from the recent past to roughly a decade ago. Aversions include Saki, who had pigtails when she was younger, and Ako, whose hairstyle looked slightly similar to Yuuki's when she was in elementary school.
%%* Rio, Kanata, and Filicia from ''Anime/SoundOfTheSky''.%%Administrivia/ZeroContextExample
%%* From the few flashback scenes so far, it looks like this applies to many of the main ''Anime/StarDriver'' characters -- Sugata, Wako, Keito, Benio, George...%%Administrivia/ZeroContextExample
* Averted in ''Anime/TenchiMuyo''; young Ayeka wears her hair in two pig tails instead of two ponytails. Given what we see of other Juraian princesses, this seems to be standard. Played straight with Ryoko.
* Barnaby from ''Anime/TigerAndBunny'' had the exact same curls that he has now when he was a kid, although much shorter.
* [[ZigZaggingTrope Zig-zagged]] in ''Manga/{{Trigun}}''. While Vash [[spoiler:changes his hair color becomes darker every time he uses his powers]], in the anime, he and Knives had long hair when they were kids. However, in the manga, both he and Knives are shown to have had the same hairstyle since they were toddlers, making that [[spoiler:well over a hundred years with the same hairstyle]]. In both the manga and anime, Vash grows his hair after certain incident and adopts a different identity, albeit temporarily. The same goes to [[TheSixthRanger Livio]].
%%* Welkin, Isara, Alicia, Selvaria, and Maximilian from ''Anime/ValkyriaChronicles''.%%Administrivia/ZeroContextExample
* Lucia in ''Manga/VenusVersusVirus'' always wore pigtails.
* Kanako from ''Manga/WanderingSon'' had pigtails even when she was a kindergartner. {{Averted|Trope}} with almost everyone else, who realistically change haircuts over the years. Kanako herself eventually lets her hair down starting around high school.
* Nate and Katie in ''Anime/YokaiWatchShadowside'' have more or less the same hair they had as kids in ''Anime/YokaiWatch''.
* Played straight in ''Manga/YouAndMe'' for every boy except Chizuru and Shun. Even with Shun, he starts out as a LongHairedPrettyBoy but cuts his hair early on to look like his preschool haircut.
* Zig-zagged in ''Manga/YourLieInApril''. Most characters show little to no change in hairstyle throughout their lives. Others such as Emi, Kaori, and Hiroko have.
* A quick flashback in ''Anime/YuGiOh'' shows that the Pharaoh was born with the same multi-colored hair that he and Yugi would share throughout the series.
* In ''Manga/YuYuHakusho'', Hiei is born with black and white hair in the shape of fire, and it stays that way throughout his whole life.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Asian Animation]]
* ''Animation/HappyHeroes'': In Season 2 episode 20, the haircuts of elderly Doctor H. and Miss Peach, besides being white from old age, are the exact same as their normal counterparts.
* In ''Animation/PleasantGoatAndBigBigWolf: Joys of Seasons'' episode 1, when everyone ages up from the alien spaceship circling the Earth and making it spin faster, Weslie retains the little fluff of wool over his forehead. The trope is averted for the other goats, who have all accumulated some kind of change to their wool "hairstyles" during the RapidAging.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Comic Books]]
* Young Clark Kent/Superboy, in continuities where he exists, has the same hairstyle(s) as Adult Clark[=/=]Franchise/{{Superman}} (short, slicked back as Clark, spit-curl as hero). In continuities where Clark ''wasn't'' Superboy, Young Clark usually has the spit curl.
* Most of the characters in ''ComicBook/{{Asterix}}'', most notably Obelix. Averted by little Impedimenta (who has pigtails) and, for some reason, young Cacofonix (who has long centre-parted hair as a kid, and swept-back long hair with a quiff as an adult).
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Fan Works]]
* West of the ''Franchise/KingdomHearts'' fic ''Fanfic/{{Reconnected}}'' has worn her hair in twin pigtails since she was six years old.
* In ''Fanfic/NeitherABirdNorAPlaneItsDeku'', Izuku has had the exact same spit curl in front of his face since he was a baby. It also happens to be his CharmPoint, as it's the first thing people tend to remember about him.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Films -- Animation]]
%%* Takaki and Akari in ''Anime/FiveCentimetersPerSecond''.%%Administrivia/ZeroContextExample
* During Butt-Head's MyLifeFlashedBeforeMyEyes sequence in ''WesternAnimation/BeavisAndButtHeadDoAmerica'', he and Beavis are shown to had the exact same haircut since they were kids.
* ''WesternAnimation/CloudyWithAChanceOfMeatballs'' starts with [[AMinorKidroduction a scene of Flint as an 8-year-old]], and he has the exact same MessyHair that he does as an adult. Averted with Brent, who has a pageboy haircut as a kid, and a mullet as an adult.
* With ''Anime/MaquiaWhenThePromisedFlowerBlooms'' being extremely TimeSkip-prone, this is used for some secondary characters who are introduced as children and later return as adults.
* Played with in ''WesternAnimation/MeetTheRobinsons'' in that Wilbur has to hide Lewis's hair in order to keep his family from finding out that [[spoiler:Lewis is Wilbur's father]].
%%* Chiyoko from ''Anime/MillenniumActress''.%%Administrivia/ZeroContextExample
* Averted with Ash's mother Delia in ''Anime/Pokemon3''. She wore pigtails as a teenager and only switched to a ponytail after having Ash.
* This is a plot point in ''WesternAnimation/{{Tangled}}'' -- Rapunzel has to keep her hair long because it loses its magic when it's cut. [[spoiler:It's all cut short at the end.]]
* Played straight with Taki and most of ''Anime/YourName'''s characters, but averted with Mitsuha, who started out as a teen who wears folded twin braids, gets an ImportantHaircut halfway through to short, then is shown after the TimeSkip as an adult wearing her hair down but with a French braid. Also averted with Sayaka who spends most of the film with twin braids but has her hair short at the end.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Films -- Live-Action]]
* Apparently Briony in the film version of ''Film/{{Atonement}}'' wore exactly the same hairstyle from childhood until she was an old lady.
* Film/TheThreeStooges in the 2012 film of the same name.
* Played for drama in ''Film/WhatEverHappenedToBabyJane'' - where Jane Hudson has the same blonde ringlets she had as a child. It's used to show that she was NotAllowedToGrowUp.
* In ''Film/TheRoyalTenenbaums'' Margot spots the same bob haircut since childhood. And the same clothes.
* ''{{Film/Matilda}}'''s titular heroine sports the same shoulder-length hairstyle with bangs as both a two-year-old and a six-year-old. Complete with [[IconicItem the same hair ribbon.]]
* In ''Film/TheForceAwakens'', Rey (who is around nineteen) is shown in a flashback to have had the same hairstyle since she was left on Jakku as a child. "Rey's Survival Guide" suggests she kept it in the hope that her missing family would still be able to recognize her. She's moved to a new look by ''Film/TheLastJedi'', by which point she's left Jakku behind.
* ''Film/FightingWithMyFamily'' shows {{Wrestling/Paige}} as having the same stringy black hair as a child. In real life she's a natural blonde and didn't become black haired until her late teens.
* In ''Film/MammaMiaHereWeGoAgain'', Donna, Tanya and Rosie all had the same haircuts in their early twenties as they did twenty years later.
* ''Film/{{RRR}}'': The child version of Sita is easily identified by the fact that she shares the same looped braids her adult counterpart was introduced with.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Literature]]
* Izaya, Shinra, and Kasuka in ''Literature/{{Durarara}}''. Shizuo (a natural brunette) is exempt from this list only because he dyes his hair blond some time around high school; the style itself is arguably the same since he was a kid.
* ''Literature/HarryPotter''
** Harry has this as a magical power. Despite many attempts by the Dursleys to cut or control it, Harry's hair always rapidly grows back to an unkempt look. Averted in the films, where Harry is shown sporting several hairstyle variations across the years.
** Hermione however is always described as having the same bushy hairstyle across all seven books -- save for straightening it once at the Yule Ball. Again averted in the films, as her hair is blonde in fifth year[[note]]Emma Watson had been required to dye it blonde for ''Literature/BalletShoes''[[/note]].
** Despite being able to change her hair at will, Tonks is forever reverting to her preferred spiky pink style.
* Shichika and Nanami from ''Literature/{{Katanagatari}}''. Togame's hair was the same style as a child, only shorter and black.
* As teens, most of the cast of ''Literature/MyNextLifeAsAVillainessAllRoutesLeadToDoom'' have the same hairstyle they had when they were children, with the difference often in their hair decorations. The character with the biggest change is Catarina herself, whose hair got a bit longer, and that's it. This is already the case in the novel illustrations.
* Urashima and Otsuu from ''Literature/OkamiSan''.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Live-Action TV]]
* Simon Tam, in the episode 5 flashback of ''Series/{{Firefly}}''.
* Brian from ''Series/{{Spaced}}'' has a flashback to his childhood, and he even has a goatee beard then. Mike also has a moustache in the flashbacks to the tree incident (and young Tim has bleached-blond hair as well).
* Rose Tyler, from ''Series/DoctorWho'', has bleached-blonde hair, with noticeable brown eyebrows and roots. She was a natural blond when she was a small child. TruthInTelevision in that many people start out blonde as children, with the hair darkening as they get older.
* ''Series/TheBigBangTheory'' has the flashback episode ''[[Recap/TheBigBangTheoryS3E22TheStaircaseImplementation The Staircase Implementation]]'' show that when the guys first became friends, Leonard, Howard, and Raj had [[https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/bigbangtheory/images/4/45/The-Big-Bang-Theory-The-Staircase-Implementation-5-1-.jpg/revision/latest?cb=20121013225052 different haircuts at the time]] while Sheldon's had stayed the same. [[Recap/TheBigBangTheoryS5E18TheWerewolfTransformation Another episode]] shows that Sheldon considers keeping his haircut the same is SeriousBusiness.
* Series/BuffyTheVampireSlayer is shown as blonde as a child in a flashback to Dawn's (imagined) birth. It has previously been established that blonde is not her natural color. Presumably it darkened in puberty (as happens with some blondes) and she eventually bleached it back. She's shown as a blonde child in a Season 2 flashback too.
* In one flashback on ''Series/{{Community}}'', young Jeff (7-8 years old) was shown to have the same hairstyle he does as an adult. Averted in another flashback, where Jeff is 10 and has longer hair with bangs.
* Whenever ''Series/{{Supernatural}}'' shows Dean and Sam as children or teenagers, they have short and long hair, respectively.
* ''Series/OnceUponATime'':
** Emma has always had the same long blonde, slightly curled, hair whenever we're shown her as a child or teenager.
** Poseidon keeps the same close cropped hairstyle and beard in the hundred or so years between Ursula's childhood and adulthood. Averted with Ursula herself though; she has black hair as a child and blonde as an adult.
* ''Series/{{Charmed|1998}}'':
** Prue's younger self has the exact same bobbed hairstyle as her in the flashback to the 1970s.
** Inverted with Patty and Penny. Despite being ghosts, their hairstyles change whenever they appear. Penny's even goes from black to red. It's a fandom joke that the afterlife must have hair salons.
** Piper notably rarely changes her hair as the series goes on. By Season 3 it grows to waist length and stays that way. Even in a TimeSkip that shows her as an old woman, it's still that length. The actress who plays elderly!Piper was even cast because of her long hair.
* A minor plot point in ''Weirdsister College'' (a spin-off of ''Literature/TheWorstWitch''). Through childhood to adulthood, Mildred had GirlishPigtails. When she bumps into school archnemesis Ethel, the latter remarks "pigtails and all". After getting one-upped by Ethel once more, Millie gives herself an ImportantHaircut.
* Addressed in ''Series/TheBrothersGarcia'' where other characters remark that Sonia has had the same hairstyle all her life. She then decides to get a radical makeover [[spoiler: but at the end she still looks exactly the same]].
* In flashbacks on ''Series/BrooklynNineNine'', fat lazy slob Detective Scully was a much more attractive man when he was younger, but still had his trademark flat-top hairstyle. "Flat-Top" was even his nickname.
* ''Series/GameOfThrones'':
** A flashback to Cersei's childhood easily tells the audience it's her by the same partly up, partly down hairstyle that Cersei most often sports. Cersei does wear it differently multiple times in the series, but that's the one she most often wore up until her TraumaticHaircut in Season 5. This ends up played straight post-haircut as - despite time clearly passing - her hair remains short for the remainder of the series. WordOfGod is that it's a styling choice.
** Brienne of Tarth always has the same BoyishShortHair - even when she spends two seasons travelling Westeros in search of the Stark girls. Presumably one of Podrick's duties as squire is giving her regular trims. Contrast to Arya, whose hair is cut short for Season 2 but grows out during the course of her journey around the country.
* ''Series/GoodOmens2019'': Aziraphale hasn't changed his hairstyle since the Garden of Eden. Millennia later he still has the same short, slightly curly haircut. This provides a contrast with Crowley who has [[ExpositoryHairstyleChange a different hairstyle]] in every time period.
* Happens often in ''Franchise/SuperSentai'', when the child actors playing the child versions of the rangers in flashbacks have their hair styled in the same way as their adult counterparts. Not quite so egregious since Japanese hairstyles tend to look pretty similar, so having the child have the same hairstyle as the adult is a way to mark who is who, especially if the adult has reddish brown hair.
** [[JustifiedTrope Justified]] in ''Series/ResshaSentaiToQger'' due to [[spoiler:the rangers being literal children in adult bodies. In the movie, which takes place ten years after, the girls have changed their hairstyles; the boys not as much, though their child actors are marked more by their outfits than by their hairstyles.]]
** Averted with the team-up films for the older teams. It's not often but there are several cases where an actor's hairstyle changed between the last episode of their show and their return.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Video Games]]
* ''Franchise/AceAttorney'':
** Larry, Edgeworth, and Phoenix in the ''VisualNovel/PhoenixWrightAceAttorney Trilogy'' have this.
** More jarring is Maya. At the end of case 5 of ''Trials and Tribulations'', [[spoiler: a picture is found of Maya and Mia as kids. Maya, likely only a couple years old in that picture, had the same long, top-knot hair she does now.]]
** Averted with Franziska von Karma who had gotten a haircut between the flashback case in ''VisualNovel/AceAttorneyInvestigations'' and ''Justice For All''.
** In ''VisualNovel/PhoenixWrightAceAttorneyDualDestinies'', Athena has this when we flash back to her childhood. [[spoiler:Pearl has the same hairstyle from when she was 8/9 when we see her again as a teenager, though slightly modified: her bangs are longer and pulled to the side, hanging down and supporting a single large bead.]]
** If photographs seen in ''Dual Destinies'' and ''[[VisualNovel/PhoenixWrightAceAttorneySpiritOfJustice Spirit of Justice]]'' are any indication, Apollo's had his dual-antenna hairstyle since he was a very young boy. And according to [[spoiler:his father's Divination Seance, those antennae have been there ''since he was a baby'', when he was otherwise completely bald]]. Likewise, Trucy's hairstyle has been the same since she was at least 8 and [[spoiler:sporting similar "antennae" in her own hair, which connects her to Apollo as half-siblings]].
* It's discovered, in ''{{VideoGame/Persona 2}}'' ''Innocent Sin'' that [[spoiler:the original "Masked Circle" was actually the five protagonists' (Tatsuya, Lisa, Eikichi, Maya, and Jun) secret club; all of them other than Maya wore a ''Power Rangers''-style mask to hide their faces. Other than Maya, the kids all had the same hairstyles when they were kids as they do when they're in high school; Maya being the exception (shorter, coarser looking hair) is important, as the others do not initially remember Maya and assumed she died in a fire all those years ago.]]
* In the Literature/DisgaeaNovels, Laharl has pretty much the same hairstyle when he was little, his antennae was just shorter.
* The plot of ''VideoGame/OedipusInMyInventory'' takes place over three days set years apart from each other. The player character's hair turns dark brown as an adult, and grey as an old man, but is always the exact same style of [[SpikyHair spiky]].
* All of the gang in ''VisualNovel/HigurashiWhenTheyCry''. Including Hanyuu though she is special since [[spoiler:it's when she was physically older. We see her as an adult in her human appearances but currently she is in the form of a preteen.]]
* ''Franchise/FinalFantasy'':
** ''VideoGame/FinalFantasyVII'': Flashbacks show Cloud with the same, [[AnimeHair ridiculous]] hairstyle as a child, 16-year-old and adult, but the child has hair in a paler shade of yellow. The 13-year-old Cloud, however, is shown with a ponytail (and the same big front-leaning spikes and bangs). {{Fanon}} assumes that Cloud at that time was going through a phase where he was trying to grow his hair out to look like Sephiroth. This is all justified as the graphics gave little detail with which to differentiate characters - Cloud's absurd hairstyle had been developed in the first place to keep him visible against the game's busy sets, and any significant changes would make the character unidentifiable. Averted in Cloud's chronologically later appearances in the ''Compilation'', where he has a different haircut, and for no particular symbolic reason ("[[ExpositoryHairstyleChange to show the passage of time]]", according to WordOfGod).
** The child Squall in ''VideoGame/FinalFantasyVIII'' has a dorky, childish sense of fashion to contrast with the teenage Squall's stylish, gothy look... and the same floppy 90s coolboy hairstyle.
** Averted in ''VideoGame/FinalFantasyX'', where the child Tidus has a different haircut and even colour. By this point, the graphics had improved to the stage where it was possible to easily tell it was the same character by the face, and the designers may have been showing this off. [[VideoGame/FinalFantasyX2 The second game]] was rushed into production, with the result that many character models were reused and it appears that only Yuna and Rikku have changed their hair at all in the two year TimeSkip.
** A variation in ''VideoGame/FinalFantasyIX''. Garnet eventually gets an ImportantHaircut from waist length to chin length. A previous flashback to her childhood shows that her hair was that length previously.
* ''VideoGame/PokemonBlackAndWhite'': As shown in the opening cinematic, the 20-year old [[AntiVillain N Harmonia]] has the same long hair tied into a ponytail that he had as an orphaned child.
* In ''VideoGame/MetalGearSolidVThePhantomPain'', the child versions of Liquid and Otacon are both wearing the same hairstyle they'll later have as adults (which has the effect of making Liquid's identity into TheUntwist...). Mantis's, on the other hand, goes from having a mop of shoulder-length bright red curls to being shaved bald.
* ''VideoGame/TheSims'':
** This is enforced in ''VideoGame/TheSims2'', where almost every hairstyle in a particular age group links to an equivalent in every other age group. This means that Sims can potentially keep the same hairstyle their whole lives, unless the player changes it.
** This also shows up in ''VideoGame/TheSims4'', to a lesser extent. Teenagers, young adults, adults and elders all have access to the same library of hairstyles and clothes, so when a Sim ages between these age groups, the game doesn't generate a new look for them.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Web Animation]]
* The senpai in ''WebAnimation/SenpaiClub'' have more or less had the same hairstyles their entire lives. The only thing that changed about them was that between middle school and high school they went from looking {{animesque}} to looking [[StylisticSuck cartoony and simplistic]].
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Webcomics]]
* Everyone from ''Webcomic/HetaliaAxisPowers'', except for the DoubleSubversion in the strip where England in the Middle Ages sees France's fashionably long hair and grows his out, only to have the style become unpopular. He plans on keeping it but lets France adjust it a bit. Instead, France cuts it back to what it originally was, to England's chagrin.
* Virtually all the characters of ''Webcomic/{{Homestuck}}'' are shown to have the exact same hairstyle throughout their entire lives. We even see baby versions of all four kids and their guardians [[http://mspaintadventures.com/?s=6&p=003790 here,]] and their hair is exactly the same. Rose even has her hairband!
* Parodied in the webcomic ''[[http://www.creativeuncut.com/comic-itgs.html Inside the Gamer's Studio]]'' by Tim Carillet. The host, Whit, is interviewing [[VideoGame/FinalFantasyVII Cloud]] and asks about how he maintains his hair. He responds:
-->'''Cloud:''' I was born with it.\
'''Whit:''' ''[{{Beat}}]'' Your mother was a brave woman.
* [[http://www.pennyandaggie.com/index.php?p=345 Lisa]] of ''Webcomic/PennyAndAggie'', visually distinctive for her hair dyed varying shades of red and tied into six pigtails, is shown having essentially the same hairstyle [[http://www.pennyandaggie.com/index.php?p=927 as a child,]] only with shorter pigtails.
* {{Averted|Trope}} in ''Webcomic/RoyalBlue''; everyone in flashbacks have different hairstyles than they do in the present.
** Mar went from box braids to a crop to long, flowing hair.
** Acantha had shoulder-length hair pre-transition. She now has a waist-length [[BraidsOfAction braid]].
** Bel had shoulder-length hair as a child, waist-length hair as a teenager, and a bob as an adult.
** Lennox had shorter dreads when he was younger.
* ''Webcomic/SleeplessDomain'': Humourously subverted when [[https://www.sleeplessdomain.com/comic/chapter-17-page-14 Undine tries to imagine Heartful Punch and her ex-girlfriend Outrageous Lime as children,]] and her ImagineSpot depicts them with the exact same hairstyles they usually wear in the present. Meanwhile, Heartful Punch's own recollection shows that their actual hairstyles at the time were quite different.
* ''Webcomic/StandStillStaySilent'':
** Lalli has been shown as a teen and a child in different flashbacks, both of which show him with the same hairstyle as the present day.
** Mia, who is a child in the DistantPrologue, is drawn as an adult in the family tree. She still has the same hairstyle, minus the [[ImportantHairAccessory hair decorations]].
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Western Animation]]
* An unfortunate example in ''WesternAnimation/AquaTeenHungerForce'', where a flashback shows that Carl was balding even at the age of ''eight years old.''
* ''WesternAnimation/TheSimpsons'':
** Marge Simpson already had her characteristic beehive as a toddler. Although apparently she wore her hair long and straight as a teenager, and then reverted to the beehive as an adult.
** Bart and Lisa have the same hairstyles as babies as they do now. The future versions of all three kids have roughly the same hairstyles as well.
** As a baby, Homer had two hairs on his head, similar to what he has now. Though he did have a full head of hair between childhood and Marge's first pregnancy.
** Averted as a RunningGag with Dr. Hibbert -- every time he's appeared in a flashback, he's had a different haircut, usually one that's associated with the time period in question.
* ''WesternAnimation/AvatarTheLastAirbender'':
** Katara and Sokka both had the same hairstyle when they were single-digit aged as they do now that they're teenagers. The same is true for Azula, but ''not'' for Zuko.
** While similar, in "The Southern Raiders" you can see notable if small differences in their childhood hairstyles. However, during Katara's opening speech in the first episode which takes place two years before the start of the series, their hair is identical to the present day.
** In ''WesternAnimation/TheLegendOfKorra'', Katara's hairstyle remains nearly the same 70 years later when she's Avatar Korra's Waterbending master, complete with hair-loopies.
** The same applies to Toph and Sokka when Korra sees them in a vision/flashback while connecting with Aang. Even in a later flashback showing Lin and Suyin's youth, Toph still had the same hairstyle she had as a child.
*** The latter actually wears a hat that looks a lot like their original haircut.
*** [[spoiler: Even as an old woman, Toph still uses the exact same hairstyle, though in her initial appearance she has her hair down.]]
** Korra herself is briefly shown as a four-year-old in the pilot, and has the same basic three-tail hairstyle she does as a seventeen-year-old, albeit shorter and bushier.
** In a flashback, Avatar Wan is shown growing his hair out while learning firebending. From there till the day he dies, he keeps it like that, age-related greying aside.
* WesternAnimation/JohnnyBravo had his trademark hair and sunglasses as a small baby in the crib... as well as his trademark libido.
* Dib and Gaz from ''WesternAnimation/InvaderZim'' during flashbacks.
* Brock Samson of ''WesternAnimation/TheVentureBrothers'' animated TV show seems to have had his trademark mullet for a long time, even back when he was in college during an episode where team Venture and pals are taken hostage by a supposedly dead college room-mate.
* ''WesternAnimation/PhineasAndFerb'' has a lot of these. The most exaggerated example is Linda Flynn, since she had the same hairstyle when she was a baby.
** Gets subverted in "Imperfect Storm", where one character was confused in part because of this trope. [[SheIsAllGrownUp She changed a lot since childhood.]]
* The ''WesternAnimation/AmericanDad'' animators always try to incorporate Hayley's headband into scenes where she is younger.
** Also in one episode we flashback to Steve and his friends at the age of four, in a montage we see them growing up together, never changing their hairstyles.
* In ''WesternAnimation/BoJackHorseman'', Beatrice Horseman had the exact same curled/braided mane style ever since she was a little girl. It only changes once she’s an elderly woman and her hair is slightly undone likely due to her age and being too frail to keep up with it.
* The main six kids in ''WesternAnimation/{{Recess}}'' when they were toddlers.
* Averted and parodied in ''WesternAnimation/{{Futurama}}'' when a flashback of Zoidberg shows him to have had hair. Amy asks in shock, "Zoidberg had hair?!" to which Farnsworth says that he didn't and that if Amy imagined him that way, that's her business. It's then revealed that [[BizarreAlienBiology fear causes Zoidberg to grow hair]], and he really ''did'' have it, and has it again by episode's end ([[SnapBack only to not have it anymore at the start of the next]]).
* Pretty much all the main characters of ''WesternAnimation/MyLittlePonyFriendshipIsMagic'' exhibit this whenever flashbacks show them as fillies. The only exception is Pinkie Pie, who had a straight mane until getting her cutie mark, at which point it poofed up into her current hairstyle. Fluttershy also has a slightly different mane in her youth; which covers her eyes like an emo fringe.
* Almost all of the kids in ''WesternAnimation/HeyArnold'' have the same hairstyles in flashbacks to their early childhood years.
* Interestingly in ''WesternAnimation/YoungJustice'', in a flashback shown with a young Artemis, she's pleading with Jade not to leave her behind. Artemis has her trademark TomboyishPonytail, but Jade is also wearing her hair that way, whereas in the present day she wears it down, implying that [[AwLookTheyReallyDoLoveEachOther Artemis ties her hair in a ponytail because it reminds her of her sister.]]
* ''WesternAnimation/MollyOfDenali'': In "[[Recap/MollyOfDenaliS1E1GrandpasDrumHaveCanoeWillPaddle Grandpa's Drum]]," Molly and Tooey find an old photo of Grandpa Nat singing with a girl. They manage to identify the town where the picture was taken, and find the girl in the process. She hasn't changed her hair in over 60 years.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Real Life]]
* Dave Mustaine (of Megadeth and formerly Metallica) has had the same long red hair since his late teens. This is especially impressive because just about everybody else from that period of metal has had shorter hair at some point.
* Music/DavidCrosby (of Music/TheByrds and CSNY fame) had the same hairstyle and moustache from the late sixties until his death in 2023.
* Creator/MaraWilson has one entry in the FAQ page of her website about people asking why she still has the same hairstyle she had in ''{{Film/Matilda}}''. She counters that she's had various short styles in her teen years and prefers to wear it longer these days.
* Creator/LouiseBrooks was famous for her [[TwentiesBobHaircut 'black helmet' bobbed hairstyle]] which, though it only became popular amongst young women in the 1920s, she had worn since childhood. And when she resurfaced in the 1940s with long hair, people couldn't recognise her.
* Creator/HollyMarieCombs is known for having the same long dark hair since ''Charmed'''s third season, mentioned above.
* UsefulNotes/ElizabethII had her signature coiffed hairstyle since the 1950s. In the 80's she would use black hair dye to keep her hair brown, but she eventually stopped very well into the 90s as her hair continued to turn grey with age.
* Creator/RoseMcGowan in her autobiography talks about the studio insisting that none of the actresses on ''{{Series/Charmed 1998}}'' could change their hair without permission from the president. She rebelled against this by dyeing her hair red and sarcastically saying they explain the change by a potion blowing up on Paige's hair (which they did indeed use). Apparently there was another "big to-do" when Holly Marie Combs (ironically the one mentioned above) changed her hair slightly - it was the same length but with some bangs.
--> "The studio feared people wouldn't recognise her. That's how dumb they think you audiences are. If a character changes their set look in any way, audiences won't know who they are looking at. I wish you could all be flies on the wall when studio executives and producers talk about you all. Believe me, you are looked at as sheep with no minds of your own."
* After Creator/KeriRussell's infamous haircut was written into ''{{Series/Felicity}}'' and the resulting ratings decline[[note]]Which probably had more to do with the show's time slot getting moved and many other changes that may have alienated viewers.[[/note]] - the WB came up with a mandate that the young stars of their shows couldn't change their hair too drastically. ''Charmed'' mentioned above was on the WB.
* Music/BrianMay of Music/{{Queen|Band}} has kept the same haircut (huge, dark, and curly) since the 1970s, but eventually let it go gray in the mid-2010s.
* Creator/OliviaHussey has always been known for having her long black hair as in ''Film/RomeoAndJuliet''. The exceptions are a TwentiesBobHaircut in ''Literature/DeathOnTheNile'', fitting the film's 1930s setting and a shoulder-length cut in ''The Pirate''. She wears it a little shorter these days but still quite long.
* Creator/EmmaWatson was required by contract to keep her hair long for the ''Film/HarryPotter'' series. As soon as she'd wrapped on the last film, she shocked her fans by getting a pixie cut.
* Creator/KateeSackhoff was the opposite - required by contract to keep her hair short for ''Series/BattlestarGalactica2003''. She eventually got fed up at this and fought for her character to grow the hair out long.
* Creator/MichelleWilliams is known for sporting very short hair, necessitating the use of wigs in most of her roles. She eventually revealed that this is because her late husband, Creator/HeathLedger, liked her short hair and so she's kept it since his passing.
* Creator/KenBurns has kept the same bowl cut between 1975 and 2020, going so far as consistently attending the same hairdresser during this time (even after she ''retired'', she would cut his hair at her home). Burns claims this was the cut he had when his mother died and he kept it to honor her memory. Burns finally changed his hair in 2021 after the UsefulNotes/COVID19Pandemic forced him to grow out his hair and he decided to keep it.
