Thanks to the SortingAlgorithmOfThreateningGeography these are often the very first level (or world) and usually easier than the other stages, to let the player get used to the controls, powerups, and enemies, and typically the home of the WarmupBoss. TheGoomba will make his grand entrance here. Some games have lots of levels with this theme, usually mixing around the time of day or [[HailfirePeaks adding other elements]] so these levels don't all look the same. A more cheerful subtype of Green Hill Zone is a flower-themed level.

It's a path in a grassland that features elements like a river, some bridges, a castle, and a volcanic zone named after Bowser. During the course of the journey, the characters find a Thwomp that is obstructing a bridge, a tower of Goombas holding an arrow sign in a road fork, and a Whomp that has to be defeated.
