Cue the organ music.

Often in TheMusical, one character will get the ensemble to join in on a rousing gospel song. You know the one. It'll have powerful pipes behind it - not just that organ, but with the lead singers (often [[SassyBlackWoman Sassy Black Women]] who are [[BigBeautifulWoman big and beautiful]]). Usually held at a Baptist church, with a primarily black congregation. It'll make you want to get up and either clap and sing along, or put your hands in the air because it's all so ''true!'' This is the music that tells grand truths about life! This is the [[WhoopiEpiphanySpeech music of epiphanies]]! This is the music of the ''LORD'', so raise up a joyful ''noise''! HALLELUJAH! Tell it, sister!

Now largely a DeadHorseTrope, except in parody (although, of course, it's still very much alive in many African American and Pentecostal churches). Might be preceded with the stock phrase, "ThatRemindsMeOfASong...." Compare and contrast with GospelChoirsAreJustBetter, scenes when a Gospel Choir shows up to sing SuspiciouslyAproposMusic that underscores a pivotal plot or character development. Also compare to actual GospelMusic, which is still going strong.

* Creator/{{NBC}} used this as the style for their 1986-87 "[[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZQXKNdfQrVg Come Home to NBC]]" campaign (the first after the adoption of the current peacock logo).
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Anime]]
* "Song of Tomorrow", the second ending theme from ''Anime/HeartcatchPrettyCure''.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Films -- Animation]]
* "Live Like a King" from ''WesternAnimation/BeautyAndTheBeastGolden1999'' which is sung by the three ghosts to Beauty's father when he wanders into the Beast's castle after getting lost.
* "Dig a Little Deeper" from ''WesternAnimation/ThePrincessAndTheFrog.''
* All of the songs in ''WesternAnimation/{{Hercules}}'' that are sung by the Muses. "The Gospel Truth" is the most evident example - just look at the title!
* "He's Back" from ''WesternAnimation/OnceUponAForest'', which is a borderline BigLippedAlligatorMoment that only barely effects the plot.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Films -- Live Action]]
* "Get Happy", most famously used in the movie musical [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2U-rBZREQMw ''Summer Stock'']], though written twenty years earlier.
* In ''Film/TheBluesBrothers'', Jake's moment of epiphany happens at a church during a rendition of "The Old Landmark" (with Music/JamesBrown presiding!).
* In ''Film/BluesBrothers2000'', featuring John The Revelator (although we get a taste of the song during the opening credits too, with Taj Mahal singing solo). It's later on sung again at a Tent Revival by Music/JamesBrown, Sam "The Supervoice" Moore, and Joe Morton.
* ''Film/AcrossTheUniverse2007'': The Gospel cover of "Let It Be" is one of the best covers in the film. It's sung by a black church choir when Jo Jo's little brother has his funeral.
* Most of the songs in ''Film/SisterAct'', naturally.
* "Ac-Cent-Tchu-Ate The Positive" from ''Here Come The Waves''.
* "Stand Up" from the made-for-TV film adaptation of ''Polly''. Partially justified, since they were actually in a church at the time, although they were in a church that very explicitly didn't do things like loud gospel numbers accompanied by SpontaneousChoreography.
* "Hold My Feeler" which comes at the end of the movie ''Film/JoesApartment.''
* ''Film/ForrestGump'': Forrest attended the otherwise all-black church of Bayou La Batre while a shrimp fisherman, and a Gospel Revival Number (with Forrest [[TokenWhite standing out like a sore thumb]] in the choir) served as the background music for a montage of the business slowly becoming a success.
* ''Say Amen, Somebody'': totally justified as it's a {{documentary}} on gospel music and church musicians, and also goes to show that GospelChoirsAreJustBetter.
* ''Film/PreachersKid'' starts with just such a number from the Choir that Angie sings in. The film cuts back to other such numbers to show how the church is dealing with her absence.
* In the Creator/RatPack movie ''Robin and the Seven Hoods'', the gang tries to hide an illegal speakeasy from the police by disguising it as a prohibition meeting. This requires that they stop the show for an elaborate Gospel Choir number denouncing the evils of "Mr. Booze."
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Live-Action TV]]
* "He's Guilty, Judge, He's Guilty" from ''Series/CopRock''.
* ''Series/{{Scrubs}}'' did this for one of JD's fantasies in "My Own Personal Jesus".
** They did it AGAIN... "We're gonna miss you Carla!"
* Gospel, in addition to being a short-lived game similar to Hoedown, was one of the most frequent musical styles used in Song Styles on ''Series/WhoseLineIsItAnyway''.
* ''Series/BabylonFive'': The season three episode "[[Recap/BabylonFiveS03E20AndTheRockCriedOutNoHidingPlace And the Rock Cried Out, No Hiding Place]]" juxtaposes a worship service on B5 held by a visiting black Baptist pastor with [[spoiler:Londo luring Lord Refa into a Narn Resistance trap, where he's beaten to death]].
* ''Series/TheDailyShow'':
** "I guess what I'm sayin' is this..." "GO..." "If 'Fair and Balanced' is how you want to sell yourself..." "FUCK..." [[http://www.thedailyshow.com/watch/tue-april-20-2010/bernie-goldberg-fires-back "Guess what I'm sayin' is this..." "YOURSELVES!"]]
** "Revolution Muslim and that kind of hate, that's the enemy. [[http://www.thedailyshow.com/watch/thu-april-22-2010/south-park-death-threats And so... I say to you..." "GO..." "And I KNOWS ya get cable..." "FUCK..." "And I say this to anyone who's threatening death in the name of religion or politics..." "YOURSELF!"]]
* In ''Series/EliStone'', one of Eli's hallucinations involved a gospel choir that included his black female receptionist. When he asked her if she was a member of a gospel choir, she wasn't impressed. "Yes, most black people are in gospel choirs, especially women."
* ''Series/{{Glee}}'' has done this to [[Music/{{Madonna}} "Like a Prayer"]], "Stereo Hearts", and "I Want To Know What Love Is".
* ''Series/UnbreakableKimmySchmidt'' did this with a version of the theme song.
* A sketch on ''The Creator/LennyHenry Show'' had Henry's Creator/TrevorMcDonald impression reading the news as a gospel number, complete with choir.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Music]]
* "Kingdom in the Sky" by Da Vinci's Notebook is a Gospel Revival Number describing the Promised Land where all shall live together in happiness and harmony -- by which, it becomes apparent after a verse or two, they mean [[Ride/DisneyThemeParks Disneyland]].
* "Don't Get Lost in Heaven" and "Demon Days" from...well, ''Music/DemonDaysAlbum'' by Music/{{Gorillaz}}. Made all the more poignant since, not only it is the final track on the album, but almost every song leading up to it has been [[GriefSong a downer]] in one way or another.
-->In these [[TitleDrop demon days]]
-->It's so cold inside
-->[[CrapsackWorld So hard for a good soul to survive]]
-->You can't even trust the air you breathe
-->[[GaiasVengeance Because Mother Earth wants us all to leave]]
-->When lies become reality
-->You numb yourself with drugs and T.V.
-->[[TheAntiNihilist So pick yourself up, it's a brand new day!]]\
So turn yourself round\
[[YouAreBetterThanYouThinkYouAre Don't burn yourself, turn yourself]]
-->[[BittersweetEnding Turn yourself around]]
-->[[CueTheSun To the sun!]]
-->[[TearJerker To the sun,to the sun...]]

[[folder:Theatre]]
* "Clap Yo' Hands" from ''Oh, Kay!''.
* "Hallelujah" from ''Hit the Deck''.
* "Great Day," one of several {{Breakaway Pop Hit}}s from an obscure musical of the same name.
* "Blow, Gabriel, Blow" from ''Theatre/AnythingGoes''.
* "Overflow" and "Leavin' for the Promise' Lan'" from ''Theatre/PorgyAndBess''. These two songs do a lot to enliven the funeral scene.
* "The Lord Done Fixed Up My Soul" from ''Louisiana Purchase'' (recycled in the movie ''There's No Business Like Show Business'').
* "On That Great Come-And-Get-It Day" from ''Theatre/FiniansRainbow''.
* "Sit Down, You're Rockin' The Boat" from ''Theatre/GuysAndDolls''.
* "(If the Devil Answers) Hang Up" from ''By the Beautiful Sea''.
* "Brotherhood of Man" from ''Theatre/HowToSucceedInBusinessWithoutReallyTrying''.
* "Run, Freedom Run" from ''Theatre/{{Urinetown}}'', a slight parody example.
* "Ain't It Good" from Creator/StephenSchwartz's ''Theatre/ChildrenOfEden''.
* "The Gods Love Nubia" from ''Theatre/{{Aida|JohnRice}}''. Bonus points for being about a completely different pantheon.
* As you may have guessed, ''{{Theatre/Godspell}}'' has a few of these - "Day By Day", "Bless the Lord", "Light of the World", "Beautiful City" and "We Beseech Thee".
* "Miracle Song" from ''Theatre/AnyoneCanWhistle''.
* "In Mysterious Ways," the opening number of the musical adaptation ''Theatre/{{The Color Purple|Musical}}.'' Subject to [[AlternateCharacterInterpretation Alternate Song Interpretation]]: on the surface it's a powerful and assertive tune of faith - but on the other hand, the church is full of GossipyHens who are commenting on the horrendous abuse going on in the house of their neighbor - and doing flat ''[[SocialServicesDoesNotExist nothing]]'' about it.
* "Simon Zealotes" from ''Music/JesusChristSuperstar''.
* "I Feel So Happy" from [[Theatre/RomeoAndJuliet RJ]]
* "Random Black Girl" from Homemade Fusion parodies this trope through the eyes of a "random black girl singing the soul". [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PbbewRSc-C0 It's also an amazing song]].
* "Faith" from ''I Had A Ball''.
* "Prayer of the Comfort Counselor" from ''Theatre/{{The Twenty Fifth Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee}}'' turns into this.
* "Are You Sure?" from ''The Unsinkable Molly Brown''.
* [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b0-eXSDA02g "A Big Black Lady Stops The Show"]] from Martin Short's Fame Becomes Me parodies the trope.
* "If You Believe" from ''Face the Music''.
* "I Got Religion" from ''Take a Chance''.
* "Rules, Regulations, and Respect" from ''[[Theatre/ZombieProm Zombie Prom]]''
* "I Feel The Joy" from Hands on a Hardbody turns into this.
* "We See The Light" from ''Theatre/{{Something Rotten}}'' turns into this. It's slightly ironic, because the gospel chorus is comprised of a group of all-white Puritans.
* "Light at the End of the Tunnel" from ''Theatre/StarlightExpress''.
* Parodied in the Creator/ReducedShakespeareCompany's ''The Complete Millennium Musical'' with "Blame It On the Lord", a gospelly number about how it ''is'' God's fault when bad things happen to good people. And of course, sung by the same three white people as the rest of the show.
* ''Theatre/TheSpongebobMusical'' has "Super Sea Star Savior", where a cult of sardines declare that [[MistakenForProfound Patrick Star]] is the one who will save them from the imminent volcanic eruption.
* English composer/performer Creator/AnthonyNewley got into the act with the revival song "Gonna Build a Mountain" from his musical ''Stop the World, I Want to Get Off''.
* The 1964 musical version of ''Golden Boy'' starring Creator/SammyDavisJr had a rare serious version of this with "No More," with the refrain "I ain't bowing down no more!" UsefulNotes/MartinLutherKingJr reportedly told Davis it was his favorite part of the show.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Web Original]]
* "Heaven on Earth" from ''Theatre/MeAndMyDick'', lampshaded in the chorus:
-->Ooh, hallelujah
-->Oooh, here we go
-->Everything feels
-->Like a gospel song
* Jon and Al Kaplan's musical adaptation of ''{{Film/The Help}}'', [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K8LkUIKBIHc "Eat My Shit"]].
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Western Animation]]
* "Everyone's Got a Song Inside" from ''WesternAnimation/{{Chowder}}'' a song about flatulence Chowder teaches a bunch of sing beans. [[spoiler: After a dog eats the beans, Mung, Chowder, Schnitzel and Truffles have to sing the song instead for a dinner theater, much to the audience's chagrin.]]
* In the ''WesternAnimation/{{ReBoot}}'' movie ''Daemon Rising'' Mike the TV performs a gospel song on the glory of being infected by the virus Daemon.
* In ''WesternAnimation/MyLittlePonyFriendshipIsMagic'', Sweetie Belle manages to turn a ''lullaby'' into one of these.
* The musical number "Mr. Booze" from ''WesternAnimation/FamilyGuy'', complete with backflips and testimonies.
** Also, from the episode "Peter and Quagmire," "Train on the Water, Boat on a Track." The duo even bring on a choir to assist with this moment of creative weakness on Peter's part.
* In ''WesternAnimation/PhineasAndFerb'', Gospel choirs appear for "[[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nDAfpqRivAo Give Up]]" and [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GeXTvTIPkoY "The Flying Fishmonger"]].
