->"For the heroes, even the fedora, jacket, and khakis were common attire."

For some Action Heroes, a fedora is just the kind of hat to wear while in a FightScene, ChaseScene, or just doing anything badass.

In some of the adventure Film Serials, the fedora would be worn by the hero, usually as a means of hiding his face when played by a StuntDouble. When Indiana Jones came along, it solidified the hat as a sign of the adventurer (at least to modern audiences). It can also become an IconicItem. Another function the fedora serves is that it gives the hero a distinctive silhouette.

Just be careful not to confuse a trilby (a hat with a similar arc, but a short, curled brim around the perimeter and made from sewn fabric rather than shaped felt) for a fedora.

A fedora is also one of the most common hats used in a CoatHatMask outfit.

Important: This is not just any protagonist wearing a fedora. There has to be an action element.

Some fedoras might have Press credentials tucked in.

* Firo of Literature/Baccano wears his hat, even when singlehandedly beating up a group of thugs. And the hat stays on the whole time.
* Sera of Manga/CaseClosed has one, although she only wears it in her first few appearances. She's definitely badass...one of the reasons is that she beat Ran at her own game (asskicking) with Jeet Kune Do.
%%* Solf Kimblee from Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood wears a fedora as part of his outfit.
* In Manga/Hellsing, all powerful vampire Alucard wears a nice-looking fedora as part of his suit when he slays his enemies.

* Daisuke Jigen of Franchise/LupinIII wears a dark fedora, with the brim usually pulled down, covering the top half of his face. Combined with his slouch, it looks like he's always taking a nap. Which makes it all the more surprising when he suddenly springs into action, guns blazing and nailing every target in sight.
%%* Reborn from Manga/Reborn2004 also wears a fedora, which he pulls off spectacularly.
%%* Koon Agero Agnis from Webcomic/TowerOfGod after the time skip.

* ComicBook/ThePhantomStranger, although he doesn't really get into traditional fights. He is, however, one of the very few characters who spooks Franchise/Batman.
* Comicbook/TheQuestion, as part of his CoatHatMask. Starting as a brawler, he later became an expert martial artist under the tutelage of ComicBook/RichardDragon.
* The Sandman, the original GasMaskLongcoat hero, and founding member of Comicbook/JusticeSocietyOfAmerica. Later adopted by his former KidSidekick Sandy the Golden Boy, when he became Sand. He took on the underworld armed with nothing more that a gas gun and a sharp mind.
* ComicBook/TheSpirit, as part of his CoatHatMask. The Spirit is intelligent, very strong, an excellent athlete with hand-to-hand combat.
** Midnight was a CaptainErsatz of ComicBook/TheSpirit created by Quality Comics when Spirit creator Creator/WillEisner was in the army. He wore an almost identical costume to the Spirit, and exhibited similar skill at fisticuffs (a later origin story established that he had been a bare knuckle boxer during the Depression).
* Rorschach in ComicBook/Watchmen, who is an Expy of the Question. He is in excellent physical condition, and is a skilled gymnast and acrobat. He is a pragmatic and efficient hand-to-hand combatant, with extensive training and experience in boxing and street combat. With the possible exception of the Comedian, he is the most violent vigilante in ComicBook/Watchmen.

* Film/Borsalino: The title of the film comes from the headgear of its main characters played by Creator/AlainDelon and Creator/JeanPaulBelmondo, who are both mobsters.
%%* David Jones in Film/China
* Franchise/IndianaJones wears this hat in all his films when he fights cultists, Nazis, and communists in his AdventureArchaeologist escapades. Film/IndianaJonesAndTheLastCrusade even begins with how he got his hat, and it was also at the end of a wild adventure.
* Likewise, Belmondo played a mobster who's a master at QuickDraw and sometimes wears a fedora in Film/LaScoumoune.
%%* Harry Steele (Charlton Heston) in Film/SecretOfTheIncas.
%%* Fred C Dobbs in Film/TheTreasureOfTheSierraMadre
* Film/XMenFilmSeries: Magneto, one of the most dangerous mutants alive, often wears a fedora while dressed in civilian garb. It's implied that Magneto has modified his hats to block telepathy like his helmet does.

* Firo from Literature/Baccano wears a classy green fedora, and is an expert in unarmed combat and knife fighting.
* Pythagoras from The Crew of the Copper-Colored Cupids wears a fedora as part of his habit of dressing up like a HardboiledDetective, and as for the rear-kicking, he is the man (or, as it were, droid) who managed to stare down an EldritchAbomination and make it work at a post office.

%%* Raymond "Red" Reddington in Series/TheBlacklist.
* In Series/DoctorWho, the Fourth Doctor would often wear a fedora. He wasn't particularly aggressive in terms of combat, but could fight evil in many ways.
* In Series/TheGreenHornet, the title character wears one as part of his CoatHatMask as he fought crime.
%%* Cain, the eponymous Series/TinMan, wears one
* Wannabe HardboiledDetective Shotaro Hidari, half of Series/KamenRiderDouble, wears fedoras. He inherited them from his mentor, actual HardboiledDetective Sokichi Narumi aka Kamen Rider Skull, and he was so badass he wore a white fedora even as Skull. Sokichi's damaged hat becomes a TragicKeepsake for Shotaro spoiler:until the penultimate episode, where he finally pulls it off the wall and wears it when he confronts the BigBad Jun Kazu and defeats him without transforming into Double, including an epic moment where he uses the hat to block Kazu's powers.

* Subverted in Music/KatyPerry's music video for Roar. In the video Katy and her boyfriend survive a plane crash in an unexplored jungle. Her boyfriend is a swaggering adventurer who wears an Franchise/IndianaJones style fedora. But despite his bravado he is immediately set upon and devoured by a tiger which forces Katy to learn how to fend for herself.

* Hazama/Terumi Yuuki is one of the brawlers from VideoGame/BlazBlue.
* In VideoGame/CastlevaniaPortraitOfRuin and VideoGame/CastlevaniaHarmonyOfDespair, the Fedora item is described as "A fashionable hat that feels just right with a whip".
* Goes without comment in the indie game VideoGame/Gunpoint, that is, until the final fight:
-->Gessler: Well, look at that. Shit Hat Conway packs a piece.\
Conway: For your own safety, Fritz, do not insult the hat.
* Silhouette in VideoGame/DestroyAllHumans is a villainous example. The head of Majestic wears one paired with a gas mask and a trenchcoat, and serves as the FinalBoss of the game. [[spoiler:The whole outfit is to disguise the fact that Silhouette is actually a woman underneath.]]
%%* VideoGame/HotTinRoofTheCatThatWoreAFedora: Overlapping with HatOfAuthority, hats are a big deal, since only detectives from the Depot can wear fedoras. Franky is the first cat to join the Depot, thus making her The Cat That Wore A Fedora. Franky's fans even wear cardboard fedoras.
%%* Sundown Kid from VideoGame/LiveALive, seeing that his scenario is based on Wild West, comes with one.
* VideoGame/LaMulanas Lemeza Kosugi rocks a green fedora as he explores dangerous caverns and ruins. He has to hold it on while falling or riding some fast vehicles.
* In VideoGame/Onimusha2SamuraisDestiny, one of Jubei's alternate costumes is an anachronistic gangster outfit with fedora and shades as he cuts up demons as usual. This outfit only appears in a brief minigame, The Man in Black.
* Franchise/ResidentEvil:
** One of Leon's unlockable outfits in VideoGame/ResidentEvil4 is a vintage gangster suit, complete with fedora. If you use the Chicago Typewriter bonus weapon while he's wearing this outfit, the reloading animation is simply him adjusting his hat.
** The VideoGame/ResidentEvil2Remake has Mr. X sport quite the cap on top of his evil head. For a , he's quite fond of it; for if you shoot it off of his head, he'll stop with the UnflinchingWalk and just charge at you at full speed.
%%* Phantom R in VideoGame/RhythmThiefAndTheEmperorsTreasure wears one as part of a nice suit.
* In VideoGame/RedDeadRedemption2 Arthur Morgan wears a fedora-like hat as his default hat.
* Gennojo Hyuga from the VideoGame/ShikigamiNoShiro BulletHell series of games is an investigator who flies around firing arcing fireballs and transforming into a werewolf when enraged, due to having the blood of an ancient wolfgod in his veins. He wears a black suit and fedora-style hat.
* The Spy from VideoGame/TeamFortress2 has his original hat, The Fancy Fedora. He has other hats but the Fedora was his first. Many players who wear it are quite experienced, so expect some asskicking, especially if it's unusual.
* Baek Doo San is one of the brawlers from the Franchise/Tekken series. Although his default costume is a Taekwondo uniform, he has an alternate costume which features him in a suit complete with a fedora.

* Webcomic/AwfulHospital: The self-proclaimed bandit princess (and later ) Celia wears one. She is skilled at burglary, slaying worms, and burgling slain worms.
* Webcomic/PlushAndBlood: Fox ([=AKA=] the Devil's Right Hand) can be seen wearing one during one of his early fights here. (Just read the first two dozen or so pages for more asskicking) By the end of the "Unstuffed" arc, it has clearly seen better days.

* Although Linkara of WebVideo/AtopTheFourthWall didn't start out as an action hero, the plotlines eventually made him one.
* Inverted with WebVideo/DemoReel's Donnie [=DuPre=]. When he's with the fedora, the only thing he seems to know how to do well is flirt to get what he wants. When he loses it, he becomes a DamselOutOfDistress and gives the family holding him hostage a blistering TheReasonYouSuckSpeech.
* Graeme in WebAnimation/MrPlastimime wears a fedora, and .
* Also inverted on WebVideo/ThePaulPowersShow. Paul's never seen without his trademark fedora, but instead of kicking ass, he gets his own ass kicked repeatedly by Batman.
%%* Eskay and Umbra of Roleplay/WeAreAllPokemonTrainers both wear black fedoras. The former's fedora has a slit in the side of ambiguous origin.

* WesternAnimation/BatmanTheAnimatedSeries: The Gray Ghost was Bruce Wayne's childhood hero, and wore a CoatHatMask costume. When a MadBomber starts using Gray Ghost toys to inflict a reign of terror on Gotham in "Beware the Gray Ghost", Batman recruits the Gray Ghost's actor Simon Trent to help him track down the bomber, and gifts him the original Gray Ghost costume. Clad in his old costume, Trent is able to prove himself a hero for real and reestablish his career.
* WesternAnimation/CarmenSandiego: The eponymous character is upgraded to a full action character (when it was merely implied in the rest of the franchise), and she often wears her wide-brimmed fedora while doing car chases, RoofHopping or doing one-on-one fights.
* Chip of WesternAnimation/ChipAndDaleRescueRangers, wears one with a bomber jacket, as he and his friends go off to thwart evil.
* In WesternAnimation/DarkwingDuck, the egotistical eponymous superhero wears one with a particularly wide brim as part of his costume.
* In one episode of WesternAnimation/Kaeloo where the gang is roleplaying (the episode is a parody of Franchise/IndianaJones), Kaeloo has to pick between Stumpy and Quack Quack as to who should play the hero of the story. She picks Quack Quack just because he has a fedora.
* Perry the Platypus in WesternAnimation/PhineasAndFerb is a member of a secret agency called O.W.C.A. where all field agents are action pets who wear fedoras.
%%* Manitoba Smith from WesternAnimation/TotalDrama, in direct homage to Indie up there.
