%% The context needed for this trope is:
%% A description of the dress in words, not just a link to another page.
%% Description of how it fits the stereotype of full skirt, puffy sleeves, veil etc.
%% Explanation of how the dress and/or the bride fit into the fairytale princess stereotype
%%
%% Any other information about why the dress in question is being worn helps flesh out examples.
%% Remember that this is a specific style of wedding dress worn to evoke fairytale imagery.

%%
->''"It's not a coincidence that all the princesses you've read about all got married in a beautiful ball gown wedding dress. This is an elegant bridal design that instantly makes you feel gorgeous and truly flatters your unique shape in all the right places."''
-->-- '''[[http://labafrica.org/9-ball-gown-wedding-dresses-sure-love/ 9 BALL GOWN WEDDING DRESSES YOU ARE SURE TO LOVE]]'''

A fancy wedding dress with an old-fashioned style of skirt, usually full length and bell-shaped, and plenty of trimmings such as pearls, flowers, lace, GiantPoofySleeves, a waist ribbon, a long train, a large veil, etc. After all, what's a wedding without some CostumePorn? And since Administrivia/TropesAreFlexible, even a SimpleYetOpulent dress can work.

The main reason for such dresses (''and perhaps the key to this trope over any other wedding dress'') is the notion that many women like to [[PrincessForADay "feel like a Princess"]] on their wedding day (even if she is [[RoyalBlood already royalty]]), and wearing such a dress is at least one way to carry out that wish. She's probably had this desire ever since she was a small child in her PrincessPhase. Back then she probably had everything planned out, except for who the groom was, [[VictoriousChildhoodFriend maybe]].

And this kind of dress is TruthInTelevision, as any [[FashionMagazine Bridal Magazine]] will show loads of these, at least as much as the modest and sensible dresses.

Sometimes it doesn't even have to be worn at a wedding. It can show up in a bridal FashionShow, or be one of several dresses a character tries on for her wedding (often a dress that she turns down due to either cost or it genuinely not being the kind of dress she wants). Or, more subversively, a burlesque dancer or DragQueen may appear in a wedding dress as part of a performance--often to poke fun at old-fashioned ideas that a bride has to be modest or virginal ([[GayAesop or female]]) to make a good spouse.

When it is a wedding, this tends to be worn by younger women. Older women are usually seen as [[SillyRabbitIdealismIsForKids not being so naive]] about how wedding should go (even if they aren't [[SillyRabbitRomanceIsForKids above romance]]).

Now as the name indicates, this dress is likely to show up at [[HappilyEverAfter the end of]] some {{Fairy Tale}}s--or at least modern works of them. (Genuine folk fairy tales tend to skip over the sartorial details to lavish attention on the villain's horrific death. Illustrated versions may show it, though.)

It isn't immune to being ImpossiblyTackyClothes if either the bride has little taste or she is forced to wear such a dress. It also isn't immune from being DoomedNewClothes or a BloodSplatteredWeddingDress, unless it's a live action work and the dress is too expensive to wreck.

Name comes from the term "fairytale wedding", which is meant to evoke old-fashioned grandeur and elegance (look for the newlyweds to leave in a horse drawn carriage), which includes the dress, and is quite popular in WeddingsInJapan.

It can overlap with EtherealWhiteDress if the white dress she wears all the time is her wedding dress (often when widowed). May also be worn by a WightInAWeddingDress. It goes hand in hand with WhiteIsPure because of white's association with purity and holiness.

[[folder:Anime & Manga]]
%%* In the ''Manga/CardCaptorSakura'' anime, Meiling stops by a boutique and is entranced at the sight of one of these.
* In ''Manga/CaseClosed'', Yumi Miyamoto briefly wears one when she and Takagi are chosen as {{body double}}s for an about-to-marry couple threatened by a SerialKiller. [[spoiler: When Sato realises ''who'' the culprit is, she switches places with Yumi and gets to wear the dress as well.]]
%%* In Episode 3 of ''[[Anime/CuteyHoney Cutey Honey Flash]]'' there are four such wedding dresses that the episode plot revolves around.
* In the "Eikoden" OVA to ''Manga/FushigiYuugi'', Miaka wears a Western wedding dress when she marries [[spoiler: Tamahome]] Taka. It's fairly simple, compared to [[WeddingsInJapan Western-style dresses worn by other anime women]], and certainly compared to many RealLife wedding dresses from the late 80's and early 90's, except it has large fabric (tulle?) roses at the waist and shoulders.
* In ''Manga/FutureDiary'', Yuki and Yuno go to a marriage simulation place, and in their "wedding photo" Yuno is wearing one of these.
* In ''Manga/HellTeacherNube'', [[spoiler: Yukime]]'s wedding dress is so gorgeous that [[CostumePorn a two-pages illustration is used to show it off]].
* ''Anime/HelloSandybelle'': During her engagement party, [[RichBitch Kitty]] wears a blue, very frilly dress with her signature cravat. She also wears a tiara. Earlier, a scene showed her going through various different outfits that were similarly exquisite.
* ''Manga/HonooNoAlpenRose'': As an adult Jeudi wears a multi-layered wedding gown with a long, extended veil, and white roses all over her head when she [[spoiler: marries Lundi]]. [[https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/alpenrose42.jpg See the spoiler-free version here]].
* Played for laughs on the cover page for chapter 111 of ''Manga/KaguyaSamaLoveIsWar'', where Hayasaka has an ImagineSpot of Kaguya wearing one of these (having jokingly filled out her future plans survey to say that she wants to be Shirogane's bride).
%%* A couple of dresses in ''Manga/LoveHina'', including Naru's when she marries Keitaro.
* Clarice's wedding dress in ''Lupin III: Anime/TheCastleOfCagliostro''. Former princess Sayako of Japan (who gave up her title to marry a commoner) liked it so much that [[TheRedStapler she had a real-world one made for her wedding dress]].
* ''Anime/KazeNoShojoEmily'': Ilse has two major ones. One is blue and has a frilly white collar and a light blue ribbon, while the other is dark blue and Ilse wears it with a blue headband and pearl necklace.
* ''Manga/{{Lady}}'': In the anime's first theme song, Lynn and her sister Sarah are seen wearing what [[https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ladylady_1.jpg appear]] to be wedding-like ballgowns.
* In ''Manga/PrincessJellyfish'', while watching jellyfish at the aquarium, Tsukimi's mother promised to make her a wedding dress just like that, fit for a princess. Though she then said, "Or is it weird that jellyfish remind me of princesses?"
* In ''Manga/RosarioPlusVampire'' Kahlua Shuzen's dress is similar to something bride would wear on her wedding (except maybe the boots and the slit}.
* ''Anime/SailorMoon'':
** A wedding themed episode of the anime featured lots of these. It's a plot point, since the whole episode relays in WeddingsInJapan imagery ''and'' a wedding dress contest [[spoiler:that get crashed by Nephrite's BrainwashedAndCrazy victim who's then stopped and released by the Senshi.]]
** [[spoiler: In the final chapter of the [[Manga/SailorMoon manga]], Usagi finally wears one for her wedding to Mamoru, pictured above.]]
* Princess Martina's dress at the end of ''Literature/{{Slayers}} Next''. Sylphiel and Amelia positively swoon over how lovely she looks in it.
* ''Anime/VoltesV'':
** [[HotConsort Katherine Rii]]'s [[https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/katherine_from_voltes_v.png dress]] looks suspisciously like a wedding bridal outfit. It is light blue and has pink frills at the hems, as do the sleeves and wide collar. With the dress, Katherine dons a veil, and an [[EverythingsSparklyWithJewelry ornate necklace that has a cord formed of golden beads and a blue gemstone in the center]].[[note]]Though blue, it appears to be white in some stills. Also, the veil exists for cultural reasons, since she's Boazanian.[[/note]]
** Lozaria's [[https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/lozaria_voltes_v.png dress]] is green and has a short, frilly light green collar. In [[spoiler: Gohl's]] flashback, it is seen flowing voluminously on the day they get married. As is the custom for noblewomen of the Boazanian Empire, she wears a veil over her horns.
* A potential dress for the princess in ''Anime/{{Voltron}}''/''Anime/GoLion'' is made, and then modeled, although the series ends before she even gets engaged.
%%* The Love Angel dresses in ''Manga/WeddingPeach'', as well as most of the actual wedding dresses.
* Sena Nakajima (née Wakabayashi) from ''Manga/YoureUnderArrest'' wore a really lovely gown when she [[MayDecemberRomance married]] [[CoolOldGuy Ken's father]]. [[spoiler: Miyuki gets to wear it briefly when she gets to give Ken a kiss on the cheek, making herself pass as Sena.]]
%%* In the Toei anime of ''[[Anime/YuGiOhFirstAnimeSeries Yu-Gi-Oh!]]'': Honda fantasizes about marrying Miho, with her wearing one of these.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Comic Books]]
* ''ComicBook/GoldDigger'': Brittany's wedding dress malfunction. As a were-cheetah, she planned to marry in her lovely, spotted, eight-foot-tall furry form. The dressmaker, apparently never having seen Brittany, sized the dress for human proportions instead, somehow overlooking fitting sessions or phone verifications. Her barbarian grandmother literally forged her a proper Barbarian-tribe substitute dress: traditional Valkyrie-ish armor. Just when it looked as though Brittany would actually have to wear that, her arch-mage dad conjured a magical wedding dress out of a dream: perfect in every way. She was, of course, overjoyed.
* Golden Eyes' dress in the UsefulNotes/WorldWarI serial ''ComicBook/GoldenEyesAndHerHeroBill'' is what happens when PimpedOutDress gets combined with WartimeWedding. The accompanying text admits that the heroine "spent her heart out on the misty froth and silver of bride-white," while [[http://cartoons.osu.edu/digital_albums/nellbrinkley/19.php#anchor the illustration itself]] shows the bride swathed in billowing lace and carrying not just a bouquet, but an ''armful'' of pink roses. The wedding itself is explicitly compared to the ending of a fairy tale in the opening paragraph:
--> "All good faery-tales have a Prince and a Princess, and a faithful Comrade, and Love, and Adventure, and War, and terrible Barriers that rear themselves between the Prince and the Princess, and a Wedding with bride-roses and white slippers—and nobody ever dies in a good faery-tale, or doesn’t get what they want—except the wicked Ogre in the tale. So this tale, too! On a bright, crisp day in Sunny France Golden-Eyes and Bill got what they wanted—one another. The Ogre—War—was dead. [sic]"
%%* Being a book about modelling, ''ComicBook/KatyKeene'' has a number of them.
* ''ComicBook/{{Superman}}'':
** One appears in ''ComicBook/SupermanTheWeddingAlbum''. However while Ellen Lane thinks it looks wonderful, Lois herself absolutely loathes it. It isn't the dress she wears for the actual wedding.
** In ''ComicBook/{{Supergirl}}'' story arc [[ComicBook/Supergirl2005 "Candor"]], [[ComicBook/LegionOfSuperHeroes Saturn Queen]], who is mind-controlling Kara Zor-El into marrying Ultraman, gets her to wear a sumptuous, multilayered, pink-and-golden wedding gown, complete with a three-pronged crown ornamented with red beads.
%%* ''ComicBook/XMen'':
%%** Lorna Dane's dress in the unfortunately derailed would-be wedding.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Fan Works]]
* ''Fanfic/TheBoltChronicles'': The unnamed bride in "The Wedding Reception" has an especially over-the-top gown, festooned with flowers and Styrofoam birds.
* ''FanFic/BurningBridgesBuildingConfidence'' opens with Marinette dreaming about getting married in a dress that elegantly fuses traditional Chinese wedding garb with a trumpet gown. This contrasts sharply with Lila, who abruptly interrupts and hijacks the venue while wearing an incredibly gaudy, tacky dress 'made of dime store materials and hatred'. This signals the dream rapidly spiraling into a CatapultNightmare.
* Creator/KhaosOmega has only deployed this once minus the sleeves. As this is a strapless complete bridal gown designed for Anise Azeat's true form deployed at the end of chapter 4 in 'Amethyst Beginnings' it serves as a reminder for Anise of the fact Soul Bonds essentially mean the two linked parties are already married. (Jet, upon seeing her wearing it, chooses that moment to propose to her, which she accepts, firing off a massive amount of golden light that due to the gown allows the two to become truly married without an actual wedding ceremony).
** During the events of Khaos' 'Galaxy Angel II Retold' trilogy, specifically the third leg, it's revealed the gown in question was designed by Kandyce Azeat (no relation to Anise in 2124 despite both girls' identical maiden names). Kandyce herself has a particular thing for brides (due to a combination of being based on a bridal version of a Flower Knight and her family having been in the wedding planning business for centuries before her birth).
** From joining the Rainbow Angels in 2197 to the expansion of 2738, Kandyce exclusively wore these when not using an illusion ability. Partially justified due to being the Alpha of a Rainbow Angel subset requiring bridal heels; 2738 moved her to the main branch's 'Prime' roster.
** Once Rainbow Angel subdivisions became a thing, Kandyce decided to theme hers entirely around brides by outright mandating anyone in her subdivision's dimension wear such dresses at all possible times. The second half of a three-month vacation in 2851 reveals it even applies to allowed visitors from the Rainbow Angels (a possibility Anise, the visitor in question in 2851 as she was who Kandyce was on that vacation with, anticipated by opting to have both spent the entire three months as brides).
* In the light novel "Okashina Futari", the titular character wears a [[https://www.deviantart.com/martellino/art/Okashina-Futari-Bride-177640858 huge wedding dress]]. It also has many petticoats and skirts.
* In ''Fanfic/QueensOfMewni'', [[https://www.deviantart.com/jgss0109/art/Star-and-Marco-Wedding-Apparel-716155231 Star]], at her wedding to Marco, wears a white dress with her underskirt and dress accents in pink, the color of her FacialMarkings. It's later established that the tradition of the white dress with accents in the cheekmark colors was started by Luna the Child, and previously queens and heiresses who married just wore a nice dress (Hekatia the Necromancer was known to wear a purple dress).
* In an [[http://wendynerdwrites.tumblr.com/post/102072947402/so-properly-interpreting-sansas-official-wedding untitled]] ''Literature/ASongOfIceAndFire'' fic, medieval heiress Sansa has a multilayered gown of silk and gossamer, ornamented with crystal beads and sleeves that almost touch the floor.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Films -- Animated]]
* Jasmine's wedding dress in ''WesternAnimation/AladdinAndTheKingOfThieves'' has a long, flowing white skirt with gold trim, including massive golden shoulder pads.
* ''WesternAnimation/{{Barbie}}'' Animated Films: If Barbie's character gets hitched in any of them, there's a good chance she'll be wearing one of these (and you could probably buy a doll with the outfit too).
** ''WesternAnimation/BarbieAsRapunzel'': Appropriately for a fairytale retelling, Rapunzel wears one for her wedding, which is a simple yet elegant white gown with a full skirt (it's more or less a palette-swap of her usual outfits and surprisingly less pimped-out than her ballgown). She doesn't wear a veil, though she makes up for that by [[ExpositoryHairstyleChange growing her hair impressively long again]], and wearing it loosely braided and woven with white flowers.
** ''WesternAnimation/BarbieAsThePrincessAndThePauper'': Princess Anneliese and Erika have a double wedding and both wear one these dresses. While both gowns are white with gossamer overskirts, long veils, and frills along the collars and sleeves, they're not direct copies of each other, with each dress being tailored to the bride's personality. Anneliese's skirt is fuller, the dress has more embroidery and it has pink accents. Erika's dress is simpler and more form-fitting with blue accents. Both are fit for a princess (or queen, in Erika's case, seeing as she marries a king).
** ''WesternAnimation/BarbieInTheTwelveDancingPrincesses'': Princess Genevieve's wedding dress is a more elaborate version of her usual outfit, colored white instead of pink and with a longer, frillier overskirt. She also wears a veil with a tiara.
** ''WesternAnimation/BarbieAsTheIslandPrincess'':
*** Princess Luciana wears a full-skirted white dress with gold accents for her wedding to Prince Antonio, although the wedding doesn't actually go ahead.
*** When Ro gets to marry her prince [[spoiler:(and has been revealed to be [[ReallyRoyaltyReveal a princess by birth]])]] she wears a full white gown with big puffy sleeves, a yellow floral underskirt, pearl beading around the neckline, and a veil paired with a tiara.
** ''WesternAnimation/BarbieAFairySecret'': Fairy princess Graciella's wedding dress is more modern-looking than some other examples, but still has a fairytale-esque look, with a wide, layered skirt and pink flowers embroidered across the bodice.
* The dress at the end of ''WesternAnimation/{{Cinderella}}'' is flowing and white, with a long veil. It's less fancy than her iconic dress (which is irrelevant to the trope, in case anyone wondered).
%% * The Franchise/DisneyPrincess franchise gave WesternAnimation/{{Snow White|AndTheSevenDwarfs}}, [[WesternAnimation/SleepingBeauty Aurora]], and [[WesternAnimation/BeautyAndTheBeast Belle]] their own wedding dresses, since we do not actually see them marry at the end of their films.
%%* Elizabeth and a mouse wear matching ones at the end of ''WesternAnimation/TheLegendOfTheTitanic''.
* Ariel's dress at the end of ''WesternAnimation/TheLittleMermaid1989'' mostly qualifies for its huge puffy sleeves.
* Mulan's wedding dress at the end of ''WesternAnimation/MulanII'' combines this with LadyInRed, since in ancient China, the bride's dress was colored red. It's layered, with long flowing sleeves and a traditional headdress.
* The [[GorgeousGarmentGeneration magically created]] dress at the end of ''WesternAnimation/ThePrincessAndTheFrog'' is the elaborate, multilayered GardenGarment with a long sparkly veil seen in most of Tiana's merchandise.
* Rapunzel's wedding dress in the sequel short "WesternAnimation/TangledEverAfter", which is actually a white PaletteSwap of her celebration dress (with a train as long as her hair had been).
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Films -- Live-Action]]
* Padmé Amidala's wedding dress at the end of ''Film/AttackOfTheClones'' was just [[UnlimitedWardrobe one of her many fancy outfits]]. This one was influenced by TheEdwardianEra style wedding dress so it doesn't have a full skirt, but it's still very elegant with a long train, veil and lots of delicate embroidery.
* In ''Film/MyBigFatGreekWedding'', Toula finds her dress overdone, at least with the veil on.
-->'''Toula:''' ''[upon seeing herself in the mirror]'' I'm a snow beast.
%%* Worn in a fantasy sequence in ''Film/BrideAndPrejudice''.
* Kate Hudson wears one in the movie ''Film/BrideWars''. [[http://wac.450f.edgecastcdn.net/80450F/thefw.com/files/2012/05/bride-wars-vera-wang-wedding-dress-kate-hudson.jpg And a big deal is made about how it was designed by Vera Wang.]]
* Naturally, Creator/LilyJames gets a [[http://photos.vanityfair.com/2015/02/11/54db6c59abcd32906da3cf47_cinderella-disney-costume-vf.jpg gorgeous wedding dress]] as Ella in ''Film/Cinderella2015'' -- full skirt, long chiffon sleeves, corseted bodice, the works. Fittingly for Ella, the skirt and bodice also feature pastel appliqué flowers.
* ''Film/ComingToAmerica'' has two:
** Imani's dress at the start of the movie, which appears to be made of gold and has a train that stretches across the room.
** [[spoiler: Lisa's dress]] at the end, a sparkling pink dress completely with an extra poofy skirt and 50-foot train.
* The would-be wedding dress at the beginning of ''Film/{{Enchanted}}'', and another one that shows up at the end. Giselle's demonstrates just how impractical these dresses can get. When she's transported to the real world she's constantly bumping into things and getting stuck in narrow doorways because her skirt is so big.
* [[http://hollywoodmoviecostumesandprops.blogspot.com.au/2011/08/wedding-dress-from-father-of-bride.html Annie's wedding dress]] in ''Film/FatherOfTheBride1991'' has a long skirt covered with lace, and full lace sleeves and neckline over a strapless bodice.
%%* Several of the dresses in ''Film/FourWeddingsAndAFuneral''.
* ''Film/{{Gia}}'' includes a FashionShow where Gia models [[https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/gia_dress_muff_618.jpg a violet wedding dress]] where the bouquet is [[PrettyInMink a white fox muff]] with pink flowers (she even does a BouquetToss with it when she reaches the end of the runway).
* Queen Louise's [[http://maceddy.com/jeanette-macdonald-the-love-parade-wedding-gown-up-for-auction/ beaded wedding dress]] in ''Film/TheLoveParade'' (1929). Not only does it appear in a royal wedding scene with all the pomp that implies, but it was a trend-setter at the time (stores offered copies of the dress for real-life brides who wanted the same look.
%%* The classic dress Ellen wears at the end of ''Film/ItHappenedOneNight'' (1934).
* ''Film/MirrorMirror2012'' has two:
** [[GodSaveUsFromTheQueen Queen Clementianna]] wears one for her wedding to [[spoiler: Prince Alcott]]; a white gown complete with a wide, poofy skirt which seems to be either made of feathers or patterned to look like feathers. [[spoiler: The wedding doesn't happen, though]].
** Snow White's wedding dress is a blue and orange gown with a wide skirt, a white, lacy collar, poofy, lacy sleeves and orange undersleeves with a large, matching orange bow on the back of the dress
* ''Radio/OurMissBrooks'' In TheMovie GrandFinale to the series, Miss Brooks pictures herself in one as she fantasizes about marriage to Mr. Boynton. [[spoiler: Miss Brooks finally gets her man at the end of the film]]
%%* Elizabeth Swann has one in ''Film/PiratesOfTheCaribbeanDeadMansChest''. Things don't go to plan.
* Buttercup's silver wedding dress in ''Film/ThePrincessBride''.
* The photo shoot and final selection for Carrie's big day in the first ''Film/{{Sex and the City}}'' movie. The bird on her head is the kicker. http://www.celebritybrideguide.com/sex-and-the-city-wedding-dress-sells-out/
* ''Film/TheSoundOfMusic'' has Maria's wedding gown, which fits the bill superbly, including a cathedral-length veil.
%%* Mary's dress in ''Film/WhatPriceHollywood''. It gets torn to pieces by rabid fans.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Literature]]
* ''Literature/ACourtOfThornsAndRoses'': Feyre's wedding dress in ''A Court of Mist and Fury'' is described as such; however, she's not overly impressed with [[ImpossiblyTackyClothes the look]] and Rhysand openly mocks it:
-->'''Feyre:''' "It was a monstrosity of tulle and chiffon and gossamer, so unlike the loose gowns I usually wore: the bodice fitted, the neckline curved to plump my breasts, and the skirts...The skirts were a sparkling tent, practically floating in the balmy spring air. I might have dealt with it all if it weren't for the [[GiantPoofySleeves puffy capped sleeves]], so big I could almost see them glinting from the periphery of my vision."
* Shows up in the Literature/{{Honorverse}} ([[JustForFun/TropeOverdosed what doesn't?]]), specifically ''A Rising Thunder'', when Rivka Rosenfeld marries her fiancé, Crown Prince Roger of the Star Empire of Manticore. Honor Harrington, serving as maid of honor, explicitly notes that while [[SimpleYetOpulent the dress is not overly frilly, as per Rivka's wishes, anyone who knows anything about fabric and gown construction will know just how outrageously expensive the gown was]], as fitting a future empress consort.
* When Queen Ehlana marries in ''Literature/TheSapphireRose'', her gown is described as being this, including having floor-length sleeves turned back partway to show the gold fabric beneath the white. The narration even notes that those in attendance are expected to view her "not as a woman so much as a work of art." Because the wedding was arranged on relatively short notice, the groom wonders if the gown was put together by magic, which is entirely possible.
* ''Literature/ASongOfIceAndFire'': In ''Literature/AStormOfSwords'', Sansa Stark gets the fairytale wedding dress she's always dreamed of, but certainly not the fairytale wedding and groom. The poor girl doesn't even realize she's being dressed for her own wedding at first, although to the reader it's obvious from the description: it's a long, full-skirted ivory and silver gown, with a bodice decorated in "ornate Myrish lace" (Myrish lace is highly prized and expensive in the setting). Sansa notes that it's a gown designed more for a woman than a young girl, although Sansa herself is only 13 years old.
* ''Literature/TheTwilightSaga'': Bella wears one in ''Literature/BreakingDawn'' when she marries Edward. In [[TheFilmOfTheBook the film adaptation]], she gets to wear ''two'' (one of them is worn in a dream sequence). Her official wedding dress is form-fitting yet flares out at the bottom to create a long train; in the movie the back of the dress also has a translucent section edged with lace. She also wears a floor-length veil. Alice says it's early 1900s vintage but with some modern updates. The dress Bella wears in the dream sequence is a strapless ballgown-type dress with a skirt layered in floaty fabrics and lots of embroidery, though in this case it goes from fairytale to nightmare, with [[BloodSplatteredWeddingDress the dress getting covered in blood]].
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Live-Action TV]]
* On ''Series/AdamRuinsEverything'', Adam explains that the wedding dress as ''we'' know it is NewerThanTheyThink. Up until the wedding of Queen Victoria to Prince Albert, brides wore nice dresses (if their families were wealthy) or everyday, casual dresses (if their families were not so wealthy). Brides began copying Queen Victoria's then-iconic white dress, but only if they were wealthy, because back then, a dress like that would have been too expensive and impractical for most women (or their parents) to justify, especially as it was only going to be worn once. (Furthermore, most Western weddings were much simpler affairs up until that point, sometimes wedged into other unrelated social events.) That changed in TheThirties, despite a little bump in the road known as TheGreatDepression, with the advent of bridal magazines that encouraged increasingly lavish wedding celebrations and elaborate dresses. The idea of [[VirginInAWhiteDress the white dress signifying the bride's virginity]] (as opposed to how wealthy her parents were) came even later, about TheFifties or so.
%%* Despite the unflattering focus on the brides in ''Series/{{Bridezillas}},'' those women still often get very pretty gowns.
%%* Phoebe's wedding dress in ''Series/{{Charmed|1998}}'' fits this, since her romance ideas came from "Literature/{{Cinderella}}."
* In ''Series/DaddysDaughters'', Dasha wears [[http://www.kino-teatr.ru/kino/movie/ros/11878/foto/i2/154099/ one to her wedding,]] making it [[{{Goth}} the first time she has worn white]].
%%* Amy and Donna's dresses when they get married in ''Series/DoctorWho''.
%% * Mimi's dress in ''Series/TheDrewCareyShow'', although it still had touches of her [[ImpossiblyTackyClothes fashion eccentricities]]. Also, Kate had a couple.
* In the ''Series/FourWeddings'' episode "And a Shark Tank", [[http://tlc.howstuffworks.com/tv/four-weddings/season-3-episode-7-pictures1.htm Celeste wears]] a dress with a bunched and puffed overskirt that can be removed to show a short [[FluffyFashionFeathers feather skirt]] an elaborate handmade bodice with leaf-like decorations, and [[PrettyInMink a white rabbit wrap (with two puffballs)]] over the dress.
* ''Series/{{Friends}}'':
** Rachel is introduced wearing a very poofy early-90s dress as a result of [[RunawayBride running out on her wedding]]. She apparently held onto it for a while as she wears it again in season four to cheer herself up after fighting with her current boyfriend.
** Phoebe's wedding dress in the final season is a borderline example. It's certainly fancy but much sleeker than Rachel's and lavender rather than the traditional white.
** Monica's dream dress is an example but she eventually gives it to another bride in exchange for the wedding band Chandler had his heart set on. The dress she ends up wearing is much simpler and more like a nice evening gown.
* ''Series/GameOfThrones'' features a few, though this [[DarkFantasy ain't no fairytale]].
** Margaery's dress when she marries Joffrey is an elegant, backless white gown with a long train resembling roses, with more roses in black embroidery along the bodice...though if you look closely, you can see [[SomethingAboutARose the roses have thorns]] as well, to remind you she's not all sweet.
** The full-skirted white gown with a matching [[PrettyInMink fur wrap]] Sansa wears to her second wedding is stunning. Pity about the groom and circumstances.
--->'''Bran Stark:''' It was so beautiful that night. Snow falling, just like now. And you were so beautiful. In your white wedding dress.
* ''Series/{{Haven}}'': In "Enter Sandman," a DreamWeaver becomes obsessed with Audrey, putting her into an eternal sleep and inducing a DreamSequence in which she (and he) are preparing for their wedding day. In his fantasy, Audrey is hopelessly in love with him and wearing a gown with a chiffon bustle twice as wide as she is, elbow-length white gloves, and a tiara. Audrey's friends race to save her before she marries him in the dream, accepting the reality and essentially dying.
* One of the minor characters on ''Series/TheJohnLarroquetteShow'' got married, and his wife wanted a literal fairytale wedding, with her and the bridesmaids in Literature/{{Cinderella}}-esque gowns.
* Guinevere's coronation gown in ''Series/{{Merlin|2008}}''. It's unclear whether her coronation doubles as her wedding, but it's still a pimped-out frock and it still involves a ceremony that signifies her marriage to a man.
* As mentioned below in the real life section, this is often (but not always) the case with weddings in the Traveller and Romany Gypsy Communities, to the extent there is a RealityTelevision show about it: ''My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding''. This is, however, contested by many within the Traveller and Romany Gypsy communities who state that the prevalence of these dresses is overexaggerated greatly, mainly by Thelma Madine the (non-traveller) woman who creates them and makes a lot of money from them.
* ''Series/OnceUponATime'' has ''several'' over the years, beginning with Snow White's feathered one in the pilot. Later ones include Cinderella's with UsefulNotes/OperaGloves, Regina's dress of tons of silk and diamonds, Cora's champagne gown with a jewelry-studded bodice, Anna's which she inherited from her mother Gerda, and Emma's high-necked lace dress.
* ''Radio/OurMissBrooks'':
** "Angela's Wedding" begins with Mrs. Davis' sister Angela trying on her wedding dress while carrying her bouquet. It is an elaborate white dress with a veil and a train, with humour coming from the fact Angela is in her latter middle-aged and is quite plump.
** In TheMovie GrandFinale, Miss Brooks daydreams about Mr. Boynton carrying her into their new home. Miss Brooks is finely dressed in a traditional wedding gown with a veil and bridal bouquet.
* ''Series/RaisingHope'':
** Virginia's {{Jerkass}} cousin Delilah had always dreamed of having a pink wedding dress with a huge train carried by Music/MichaelJackson, when she was a teenager back in TheEighties or early in TheNineties. When she finally ''does'' get married in her late 30's or early 40's, she finally gets her wish. Including the part about Michael Jackson (or at least an MJ impersonator) carrying her train.
** Later in the series, Virginia's father offers to give her the wedding ''she'' always dreamed of, but never got. Virginia wears the same dress Princess Diana wore to her wedding to Prince Charles, to renew her vows to Burt. (Prince Charles' outfit is also worn by Burt.)
* Darlene's wedding dress in ''Series/{{Roseanne}}''. Originally her grandmother Bev's, its old-fashioned look fit in nicely with Darlene's goth style.
%% * Many dresses featured on ''Series/SayYesToTheDress''.
* ''Series/TheUntamed'': Jiang Yanli wears a traditional-looking Chinese gown for her wedding to Jin Zixuan; it's a gorgeous red dress with a sheer gold robe, sleeves almost as long as she is tall and a gold headdress. She even secretly goes to see Wei Wuxian prior to her wedding to show him how she looks in her dress, as he's unable to attend the ceremony. He gets choked up by how beautiful she looks.
* Alice Tinker's wedding dress in ''Series/TheVicarOfDibley'' episode "Love & Marriage", although being [[CloudCuckoolander Alice]] it has a few unique additions of her own, such as a headpiece that looks like a glass sculpture with hearts hanging from it, fairy lights, and an illuminated bodice reading "I Love Hugo".[[note]]Her original design was even weirder: "And for the train, I thought ''[[WesternAnimation/ThomasAndFriends Thomas the Tank Engine]]''..."[[/note]]
* Grace tries one on in ''Series/WillAndGrace'', but settles for something more understated and fashionable for her own wedding.
[[/folder]]
[[folder:Magazines]]
* ''Magazine/{{OUT}}'': The December 1993 cover depicts [[https://img.mandarake.co.jp/webshopimg/01/00/856/0100035856/01000358562.jpg Sailor Moon]] in one.
[[/folder]]
[[folder:Music]]
* Although Music/{{Beyonce}} kept her actual wedding dress a secret, she's worn a couple for performances. One for a video, and [[http://justjared.buzznet.com/photo-gallery/2019131/beyonce-wedding-dress-07/ this one]] with a [[FluffyFashionFeathers feather-trimmed skirt]] for the 2009 Creator/{{BET}} awards.
* ''Music/EvilliousChronicles'': Margarita Blankenheim wears one throughout "Gift From The Princess Who Brought Sleep". [[spoiler: This is rather ironic, as the events of the song were brought on by [[ADeadlyAffair her husband's cheating]].'']]
* One shows up in Music/LindseyStirling's remix of ''Theatre/ThePhantomOfTheOpera'', when she stands on the stage of an empty theater.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Theatre]]
* Christine wears a gorgeously ornate wedding dress, complete with a train, floor-length veil, and lace spiralling up the skirt, in the final scene of ''Theatre/ThePhantomOfTheOpera''. Unfortunately for her, though, she's only wearing it because her StalkerWithACrush the Phantom ''made'' her do so as part of his ScarpiaUltimatum, so she has rather more pressing matters on her mind than looking like a princess.
* In ''Theatre/TheSoundOfMusic'', Maria wears an elaborate wedding dress with a train, and there is a scene where the nuns help her into it and allow her to admire herself in a mirror for the sake of CostumePorn.
[[/folder]]

%%[[folder:Toys]]
%%* Some of {{Franchise/Barbie}}'s wedding outfits, but not all of them.

[[folder:Video Games]]
%%* Medea's dress at the end of ''VideoGame/DragonQuestVIII''.
* Yuna's would-be wedding dress in ''VideoGame/FinalFantasyX'' counts, despite the [[ShowgirlSkirt atypical cut]] of the skirt. It has stylized feathery wings, a massive feather-lined train, and a veil long enough to ''cover said train.''
%%* Ashe's dress at the beginning of ''VideoGame/FinalFantasyXII''.
* ''VideoGame/{{Guenevere}}'' opens with the title character's wedding to Myth/KingArthur, while wearing an extremely elaborate gown her servants have spent years to create.
* ''VideoGame/TheKingOfFighters'':
** In ''King Of Fighters '97'' if you had Mai face off Andy, she'd show up in a fancy wedding dress just before the fight to tease him, then quickly change into her trademark clothing and throw the bouquet - which a deathly embarrassed Andy would hide in his clothing.
** In ''VideoGame/TheKingOfFighters '02'', Mai wears it again in a finishing move ([[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rEaUIjVjKXE see here]]).
* In the mobile phone game ''VideoGame/LoveNikkiDressUpQueen'', a craftable wedding dress called Realized Dream is this style. It's also the only wedding dress in the game that's not from an event, making it necessary to craft for a level requiring a wedding dress if you didn't start playing until after the wedding event.
* In ''VideoGame/MedievalIITotalWar'', the cinematic for the marriage of one of your royal family's daughters shows her entering the cathedral in one of these. The train of the dress is at least ten feet.
* In ''VideoGame/MegaManXDive'', Alia and Layer get variants for the Bride of June event wearing wedding dresses. Alia's dress is styled so the bustier is made out of white and light blue flowers (also present on her choker and the ribbon holding the veil), while Layer's has rose decorations and a [[RedStringOfFate red ribbon]] around her waist.
* The last storied event of ''VideoGame/NamuAmidaButsuUtena'', which celebrates Tanabata and June Bride at the same time. The latter part naturally features splendid wedding gowns worn by Ashuku, fetching suits for grooms and cool wedding interior designs.
* In ''Franchise/{{Pokemon}}'', Mega Gardevoir's skirt is upgraded to look like this.
* Freudia Neuwahl's outfits in the ''VideoGame/{{Rosenkreuzstilette}}'' series give off a vibe that makes it look like she's wearing a wedding dress. In ''Freudenstachel'', a sash is worn around her outfit's waist, which makes it look as if its skirt were separable from its top.
* At the end of Emelia's story in ''VideoGame/SagaFrontier'', when Gradius investigates a church, it's revealed that she's carrying the dress she would have married Ren in if he wasn't murdered. She changes into it at Anne and Liza's insistence, at which point her final boss interrupts, and she wears it throughout the battle (meaning you don't get the benefit of any of her other outfits for the fight).
* In ''VideoGame/SuperPaperMario'', Peach's dress when [[HypnotizeTheCaptive she was forced]] to marry Bowser, was basically a white version of her usual dress, but still was of a form that fit this trope. She was given a new, actual wedding dress for ''VideoGame/SuperMarioOdyssey'' as another forced wedding to Bowser was the primary plot point.
* Several of the Paralogues in ''Videogame/{{Fire Emblem Heroes}}'' take place at a Bridal Festival, the point of which is to get a bunch of the women into ludicrously elaborate strapless wedding dresses (or in Oboro's case, a wedding kimono).
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Webcomics]]
* In this [[http://nonadventures.com/2009/08/29/tying-the-not/ strip of]] ''Webcomic/TheNonAdventuresOfWonderella'', which spoofed the RunawayBride trope. Wonderella wears a white and silver dress with an elaborately tiered skirt.
* ''WebComic/PrincessPrincess'': Sadie wears a long ballroom-style gown and veil in the epilogue while marrying Amira.
* In ''Webcomic/YokokasQuest'', the [[https://yokokasquest.com/comic/chapter-7-pages-50-51/ final page of chapter 7]] is the debut appearance of Blinky in her wedding dress, who together with her new husband Clyde, get a [[SplashPanel full two-page spread]] to show off the moment. It's a layered white dress with a veil and flowery hair ornament, all with glowing orbs running through them, made for her by the seamstress spirit Yin.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Web Original]]
* In proving the "fairy tale" part right, WebVideo/TheNostalgiaChick revealed that her [[Film/TheLordOfTheRings Arwen]] costume in ''WebVideo/SuburbanKnights'' was an adapted wedding dress (and that the cast stepped on the train many times).
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Western Animation]]
%%* Hayley wore one in ''WesternAnimation/AmericanDad'', although she was {{Brainwashed}}.
%%* Erin's dress in the ''WesternAnimation/{{Daria}}'' episode "I Don't".
%%* Lois's dress in ''WesternAnimation/FamilyGuy'', which can be seen on a picture on the house stairway.
* Kimber wears one in the second half of the ''WesternAnimation/{{Jem}}'' two-parter "Hollywood Jem" episode, with all the other Holograms (minus Jem, as Jerrica was the maid of honor, instead) being her bridesmaids. It was complete with a long train and many other frills fitting an 80s wedding dress. [[spoiler:She was to marry Jeff, her ''other'' boyfriend, but they ultimately decided not to go through it.]]
* ''WesternAnimation/MyLittlePonyFriendshipIsMagic''
** In the episode "The Ticket Master," Rarity imagines herself marrying Princess Celestia's nephew while wearing one of these (with a rather long train), despite being a unicorn. [[http://i245.photobucket.com/albums/gg78/evalana/blog/mlpfim_ep0319.png Pic here.]]
** Done again in the season 2 finale, "A Canterlot Wedding;" this time, it's worn by Princess Cadance, who's marrying Twilight Sparkle's older brother, Shining Armor. [[spoiler:And by [[{{Doppelganger}} Changeling]] [[BigBad Queen Chrysalis]], disguised as her.]]
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Real Life]]
* As noted, this is common in royal weddings.
** The TropeCodifier was [[UsefulNotes/QueenVictoria Queen Victoria]], who popularized the bride wearing white; previously, wedding dresses were normally just variations of typical pimped out dresses.
** The future Queen Elizabeth II's dress.
** Princess Diana's dress, although she [[WTHCostumingDepartment hoped the moths had gotten to it]].
** Kate Middleton's dress ([[http://www.telegraph.co.uk/fashion/people/kate-middletons-wedding-dress-in-pictures/ shown here]]) is in the "fitted princess" style. With just a fair amount of lace, it's quite a SimpleYetOpulent dress.
** Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, the last Shah of Iran, was married three times. Although his first wife, Princess Fawzia of Egypt, wore a relatively simple dress, his next two wore gowns that fit this. His second, Soraya Esfandiary-Bakhtiari, wore the most extravagant (seen [[http://www.flickr.com/photos/8637723@N05/3607520259/ here]] and [[http://www.flickr.com/photos/8637723@N05/3609540441/in/photostream/ here]]), with a dress loaded with trimmings of gauze and [[FluffyFashionFeathers soft feathers]].
** Creator/GraceKelly's wedding dress was designed by [[UsefulNotes/AcademyAward Oscar]]-winning costume designer Helen Rose, and 36 seamstresses worked on it for six weeks. Parts of the dress were made of nineteenth-century Brussels needle lace. Today, it's [[http://www.philamuseum.org/collections/permanent/56621.html displayed]] at the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
* Music/CelineDion's wedding dress even had a matching [[PrettyInMink white mink jacket]] to wear outside in the cold.
* There are Franchise/HelloKitty themed weddings that includes several dresses like these. Think this is a joke? See [[http://forladiesbyladies.com/index.php/2009/03/20/hello-kitty-weddings-goodbye-to-good-taste/ here]] and [[http://www.kittyhell.com/2009/11/23/hello-kitty-wedding-dress/ here]]. Even [[Creator/{{Sanrio}} Sanrio Puroland]] and Harmonyland holds official Hello Kitty themed weddings on special occasions.
* And, of course, there are wedding dresses based on Franchise/DisneyPrincess dresses, which can be viewed [[http://www.disneybridal.com/ here]]. The dresses aren't necessarily based on what the girls wear in their movies, but capture their look and feel. Yet some forgo the traditional bell shape (the one for [[WesternAnimation/TheLittleMermaid1989 Ariel]] is obviously mermaid-style, for instance), but still fit this trope otherwise.
* There's also a line of Franchise/SailorMoon themed wedding dresses, [[http://www.mariarosa.co.jp/sailormoon/collection.html seen here]]. Included in the collection is Usagi's wedding gown from the end of the manga, Princess Serenity's gown and more traditional wedding gown that has optional pieces that make it into a ballgown version of Sailor Moon's first Sailor Fuku. (The collection also has Mamoru's wedding tuxedo, and Tuxedo Mask's suit, to match the bride.)
* Many wealthier Irish Travellers are notorious for having lavish weddings with large, poofy gowns. (See examples [[http://chateaudelu.blogspot.com/2009/05/irish-traveller-update_21.html here]], [[http://irishfireside.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/04/travellerphoto.jpg here]], and [[http://tackyweddings.files.wordpress.com/2008/11/youngestbrides_450x250.jpg here.]]
* Fashion designer Vera Wang became a household name due to this trope. While wedding dresses aren't the only thing she designs, it's what she's best known for.
* As detailed in [[https://youtu.be/LbPw9AlVKVM?si=BLti85IBsvZDysrF this video]], the fairytale-style wedding dress became most popular in TheEighties, with the 1981 wedding of Princess Diana inspiring many brides and bridal fashion designers to copy her iconic ruffled dress. 1980s wedding gowns typically had GiantPoofySleeves, big Victorian-style skirts, long trains, and were adorned with ruffles, lace, and [[GemEncrusted gems]].
