It stretches. It molds to the body. It's shiny. It's slick. It's cold. It's warm. It makes funny noises. It smells... well, ''[[ShapedLikeItself rubbery]]''. Rubber, and its man-made polymer cousins, latex and PVC, can be very interesting to the senses, and many people find that sexy.

And sometimes, people go a little overboard with it. This trope is when someone's attire is mostly rubber, latex or PVC. It can be a fashion statement (especially in Hollywood circles), it can be a power uniform, and it can subliminally say something different altogether. It is usually black in most cases, though white (especially among "[[NaughtyNurseOutfit naughty nurses]]") and red (among "[[HotAsHell sexy devils]]") are also common. This is mostly a bondage/fetish/fashion trope.

One thing that is often overlooked in fiction is that it is very prone to [[WardrobeMalfunction wardrobe malfunctions]] as any tear or hole can cause the entire garment to split completely as it is usually worn under tension against the body.

See also LatexSpaceSuit and some {{Spy Catsuit}}s. Not to be confused with PeopleInRubberSuits or RubberMan. Compare its sister trope, HellBentForLeather.

!!Examples:

[[foldercontrol]]

[[folder:Anime & Manga]]
* In ''VideoGame/{{Medabots}}'', the Rubber Robo gang was named for their rubber suits. Played more for comedy than anything else.
* ''Anime/PokemonTheSeries'': [[Characters/PokemonTheSeriesTeamRocketTrio Team Rocket]] has donned rubber suits on occasion to protect themselves from Pikachu's electrical attacks. Shame it doesn't protect them from other Pokémon attacks.
* Katsuya Shirogane in ''Anime/SpeedGrapher'' used a fullbody rubber suit when he was killing people. Well, it's more like his body ''became'' a rubber gimp suit. Euphoric powers are weird (and not very scientific).
* ''Manga/CardcaptorSakura'': Tomoyo made Sakura a rubber catsuit -- ahem, a [[{{Meido}} maid]] -uniform-like dress with a cat theme, made of rubber [[JustifiedTrope for electricity resistance, when facing The Thunder]]. [[MemeticMutation It's become quite popular.]]
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Comic Books]]
* ''ComicBook/SpiderMan'': While Spider-Man typically doesn't dress like this, he does have a padded, all-rubber variant of his costume that he often uses when dealing with [[ShockAndAwe Electro]] and other villains with electrical powers.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Films -- Live-Action]]
* The Harkkonen clan from Creator/DavidLynch's ''Film/Dune1984''. Famously, Music/{{Sting}} turns up in a rubber g-string in one scene for no explainable reason.[[note]]Of course, behind the scenes he ''was'' prepared to perform '''nude'''... but it was decided to throw something on. Still no word on why leather, though.[[/note]]
* Latex bodysuits were implemented by the killer in ''Film/{{Se7en}}'' for Lust.
* Batman's suits in the [[Film/Batman1989 Tim Burton]] and [[Film/BatmanBegins Christopher Nolan]] incarnations is made of a black polymer.
** In ''Film/BatmanForever'', Dr. Chase Meridian mentioned her attraction to black rubber while trying to grope Batman. Batman's response? "Try a fireman. Less to take off."
** In ''Film/BatmanReturns'', Catwoman's costume, as far as the story, is PVC, when in reality, it's latex.
** In ''Film/BatmanAndRobin'' As Poison Ivy noticed, Batman wear a rubber suit ("There's something about an anatomically correct rubber suit that puts fire in a girl's lips"). She is herself dressed in a green latex catsuit at this moment.
* Trinity in ''Film/TheMatrix'' also wears a PVC outfit. Her outfit in ''Film/TheMatrixReloaded'' goes one step further by adding a coat of the same material.
* The slasher films ''Blackout, Zipperface'' and ''Sandy Hook Lingerie Party Massacre'' all featured homicidal maniacs in gimp suits.
* ''Film/LooneyTunesBackInAction'': Dusty Tails wears one when she dresses in spy gear.
-->'''Daffy:''' How many galoshes died to make ''that'' little number?
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Literature]]
* A common fashion in the AlternateTimeline England of the ''Slave World'' novels.
* Layla the Latex Lady, from ''Literature/JohannesCabalTheNecromancer'', takes this a lot farther. She's a literal incarnation of illicit sexuality, and she ''definitely'' hasn't got anything else on beneath the latex catsuit. [[spoiler:Including skin, or flesh.]]
* ExoticDetective ''Literature/SamJones'' in the book ''The Black Rubber Dress'' is all in rubber at a business function full of investment bankers. Part of the reason for the function is to unveil her new sculpture in the bank foyer.
* ''Literature/RubberGirl'' wears a LeotardOfPower made out of Elaztixium, a stretchy clothing material made of rubber, plastic, cotton, water and Geminite. Elaztixium clothes is sold at Elaztix, so regular people like Melissa would have a shirt that's the same material that gave Rubber Girl her name.
* A not uncommon outfit among women of [[VampiresAreSexGods the Raith family]] in the ''Literature/DresdenFiles'' series. Justine in particular is known to favor one since she can't actually touch her lover Thomas without burning him.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Live-Action TV]]
* Razor Ramon HG, aka Creator/HardGay, [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Masaki_Sumitani a Japanese TV personality and wrestling star,]] dresses in a CampGay black [=PVC=] biker cap, vest and hotpants and black leather boots.
** He hilariously went [[CrossesTheLineTwice over the line]] into {{squick}}sville the time he pulled a PVC facemask out of the front of his PVC hotpants for someone ''else'' to wear...
* Astronema in ''Series/PowerRangersInSpace'' wore PVC/Rubber for the first half of the series.
* ''Series/{{CSI}}'' has a serial killer that dressed in a full body gimp suit (purchased from a local BDSM shop) to avoid leaving traces. That was probably the least strange thing about him.
* ''Series/DoctorWho'':
** The Voord in "[[Recap/DoctorWhoS1E5TheKeysOfMarinus The Keys of Marinus]]" wear suits to [[ClothesMakeTheSuperman swim in Marinus's powerful acid oceans]], which appear to have fused with their actual bodies. Barbara comes across a Voord suit on the beach with a small tear in it and only small remains of the creature inside, which has been totally dissolved.
** In "[[Recap/DoctorWhoS6E4TheKrotons The Krotons]]", [[MsFanservice Zoe]]'s costume consists of a very short black PVC skirt and matching jacket. Behind the scenes it proved to be less than practical, because it was so easily damaged; by the last episode, the Doctor has to keep his hand on Zoe's shoulder in several scenes to hold the jacket together.
* The aptly named Rubber Man from ''Series/AmericanHorrorStoryMurderHouse'' wears a full body black latex BDSM suit with concealing mask to commit his most heinous acts. (In real life, skin-tight rubber fetish suits are quite fragile and cling to the wearer's body, impeding movement. Garments less suited to running around and committing acts of violence would be hard to invent.)
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Music]]
* The TropeNamer, Music/DoctorSteel, dressed in a [[BadassLongcoat PVC labcoat]] and gloves ([[TropeNamer and sang about it!]]), and also had a black PVC [[https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/364811_5452.jpg steampunk attire]]. "His [[HospitalHottie nurses]]" also often dressed in PVC uniforms.
* The video for "Just a Little" by Liberty X has the girls in PVC catsuits.
* Music/BritneySpears wore a red PVC catsuit for the video of "Oops I Did It Again"
* Music/{{Madonna}} and her models wear a LOT of it in the video for "Human Nature." Then-35-year-old Madonna even rocks a PVC bikini.
* Grausame Töchter basically live this trope. Their stage show contains plently of latex. Their album arts have plently of latex. They even have songs just about Latex.
* ''Nachtmahr'' are another band that makes use of Latex. Moments include the Nachtmahr girls dressing up in Latex for their stage shows.
* Music/MileyCyrus paid tribute to the Britney Spears example listed above in her "Mother's Daughter" music video.
* “Gummi” by Lindemann is about rubber fetishes
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Video Games]]
* ''VideoGame/TheLegendOfZeldaBreathOfTheWild'' lets Link wear a fish-themed Rubber Armor set. It's designed to give him resistance to electric damage.
* Female Black Ops agents in ''VideoGame/HalfLife'' are dressed in full-body rubber catsuits, which help their agility and speed in evading Gordon Freeman.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Web Comics]]
* Rubber suits are Mistress Sixx's most prominent kink in ''Webcomic/Collar6''.
* Johnathan and Caley are wearing full rubber suits at the start of Chapter 13 of ''Webcomic/DemonCandyParallel''.
* Common in ''Webcomic/{{Sunstone}}'' due to the BDSM theme of the comic. Ally in particular has an entire wardrobe composed mostly of outfits like this, made by her friend Alan.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Real Life]]
* There are, of course, actual latex/rubber/PVC fetishes.
** Gimps (male BDSM rubber/leather slaves) wear suits and masks of rubber or latex.
** Also used in BDSM as part of the sensory deprivation fetish. Less common than blindfolds but more common than noise-canceling headphones.
** "[[{{Pun}} Latex paint]]" is available through fetish outlets that can be applied directly to the skin and peeled away easily, similar to the makeup used in movies. While useful for filling in gaps in an outfit, there are areas of the body where application is not recommended.
* Latex is also a popular garment choice among dominatrices, professional and otherwise.
* Latex is particularly popular among goths, with [[http://wakeupgoth.com/types-of-goths/the-latex-goth/ one goth sterotype even existing for those who love Latex]], maybe a little too much.
* Latex dresses seem to be becoming rather "hip" among the Hollywood elite lately. Comedian Margaret Cho, who has claimed to be in the BDSM subculture, has been known to wear latex dresses to public occasions.
* Latex is becoming increasingly popular in the female population for really simple reasons - Men actually ''[[MaleGaze look at]]'' tightly-clad behinds and legs. The fact it's easily combined with [[HellbentForLeather leather jackets and boots]] only gives it bonus points, and nothing quite matches the unique reflective sheen of latex. There's just a single flaw - again, since latex is always worn tensioned, running is a big no-no.
