''The Princess Diaries'' is a YoungAdult book series by Creator/MegCabot following the exploits of Amelia "Mia" Thermopolis, a teenager who goes to Albert Einstein High School and lives with her strongly liberal single mom. Her life changes drastically when her father comes for a visit. After being treated for testicular cancer, he is no longer able to have children. Because of this, he finally tells Mia a secret he, her mother, and her grandmother ("Grandmere") have been keeping from her for years: [[ReallyRoyaltyReveal he is really the Prince of the fictional principality of Genovia]]. Because of his illness and treatment, Mia is now Her Royal Highness of the country and [[HiddenBackupPrince the heir to the throne of Genovia]].

Upon first hearing the news, Mia objects to the idea of having to become a princess and having to rule over Genovia. She also fears that this new status will make her an outcast at her school and [[IJustWantToBeNormal would rather just be a normal teenager]]. The series follows Mia as she slowly adjusts to becoming a Princess and comes to terms with the idea of being a ruler.

In 2001, the first book was adapted into [[Film/ThePrincessDiaries a movie]] starring Creator/AnneHathaway and Creator/JulieAndrews. It was followed by a sequel in 2004, ''The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement''. Both movies have a [[BroadStrokes large number of changes]] from the novels, with the second not resembling any plot points from any of the books with the exception of Mia's mother marrying her teacher and having a baby with him.

In 2015, Meg released two spinoffs: ''Royal Wedding'', which is an adult novel that follows Mia as a 25-year old, and ''Literature/FromTheNotebooksOfAMiddleSchoolPrincess'', which follows Mia's recently revealed half-sister.

As of 2020, Meg is updating her online blog to show how Genovia is handling the pandemic. Mia has to work in tandem with the prime minister to protect the kingdom. Meg later announced ''The Quarantine Princess Diaries'' for 2023, containing a mix of edited and updated versions of the existing blog entries and a number of entirely new entries.

* ''Ransom My Heart'' (as written by Princess Mia Thermopolis of Genovia) (2009)
----
!!Tropes in the books include:

* ACupAngst: Mia, a LOT. [[spoiler: She gets rid of this when her breasts develop in ''Princess Mia.'']]
* ActuallyPrettyFunny: Once he's had time to cool down about [[spoiler:his parents announcing their separation]], Michael tells Mia that he thinks the "sexy dance" as she refers to it was this, being quite amused about the situation. He says that he's not mad at her doing it since she was a little tipsy from beer while trying to act cool, and [[spoiler:J.P. has become one of their mutual friends so Michael knows that she wasn't flirting with another guy in his presence]]. Michael only jokingly asks that she do it for him next time. She can promise that, without a problem.
* AdaptationDecay: The movies are referenced humorously as InUniverse examples. Almost every time they come up in the books, Mia makes a snide remark. She has little problem with the first movie, aside from how they portray her grandmother and how they kill her dad. The second film is the one she critiques for the decay (Meg Cabot has said that she liked the first film and hated the sequel).
* AllFirstPersonNarratorsWriteLikeNovelists: Zigzagged, sometimes Mia writes like this, sometimes she doesn't. Not to mention that Mia really is an aspiring novelist so it would make sense for her to write like this.
* AllLoveIsUnrequited: [[spoiler:In book 5, Boris towards Lilly. Also, Lilly towards J.P.]]
* AllPsychologyIsFreudian: Averted, Lilly's parents are Jungian Psychiatrists and Mia tries for years to achieve self-actualization.
* AlphaBitch: Lana Weinberger.
** LovableAlphaBitch: After she changes her attitude towards Mia.
* AncestralName: J.P.'s full name is John Paul Reynolds-Abernathy the Fourth. His father is John Paul Reynolds-Abernathy the Third.
* ArabOilSheikh: Tina's father.
* TheAtoner: Lilly becomes this in Book 10, after she [[spoiler: created that nasty hate site about Mia and Michael found out about it.]] Mia takes a while to figure it out, though.
* TheBGrade: played straight and averted. In book 6 Mia is horrified to get a B in English, her best subject. The B was mainly due to the fact her new English teacher didn't like the essay subject. On the other hand Mia is thrilled to get a B- in algebra after working hard to get her grade up from an F.
* BetaCouple: Originally, Boris and Lilly, later Boris and Tina. Briefly there was also J.P. and Lilly, before J.P. moved on to Mia and Lilly moved on to Kenny.
* BettyAndVeronica: Mia between Michael (Betty) and Josh (Veronica) in the first book (and movie). In the later books it's Mia between J.P. (Betty) and Michael (Veronica).
* BewareTheNiceOnes: Mia in Book Ten is gracious to [[spoiler: J.P. during their breakup]], but then she calls the Genovian lawyers to [[spoiler: put a cease and desist on his play]] for what he did to [[spoiler: Lilly.]] You don't want to cross a princess with a cellphone.
* BigBrotherInstinct:
** Michael in general has this towards Lilly, but he's not afraid to call her out for being a {{Jerkass}}.
** Mia is the older sister version of this towards Rocky. She adores him, worries about his health, and wants to protect him from all infectious diseases.
* BigNo: Mia has a couple moments of these. Usually involving Grandmere.
* BitchInSheepsClothing: [[spoiler:J.P. turns out to be a ManipulativeBastard who was mainly using Mia to get famous.]]
* BlatantLies: Lana's election speech in Book 6 is full of these- in essence, she tells the crowd that she'll get them exactly what they want, despite the fact that, as Mia knows, it'd be impossible to get it (and in some cases, getting it would be totally unfair on others).
* BookDumb: Mia considers herself this, but, apart from [[WritersCannotDoMath math]], [[UnreliableNarrator it's hard for the reader to tell]].
** Lana and Trish consider her pretty smart but she spends a lot of time with [[TeenGenius Teen Geniuses]] Lilly and Michael which gives her a very high standard of intelligence. She is not very good at math and science, but is very good at English and speaks seemingly fluent French at times.
* BrickJoke:
** Mia's boyfriend suggests going bowling instead of going to prom. Years later, there is a reference to spending the night at an "all night bowling alley." Doubles as an UnusualEuphemism.
** In the very first book, Mr. Giannini hints to Mia that he'd think she'd make a great Eliza Doolittle in the school production of ''My Fair Lady''. Mia demurs because of her PerformanceAnxiety, and claims she can't sing. ''Six books later'', Grandmere blackmails her into performing the lead of ''Braid!'' and does intense singing and dancing training to make sure the whole cast is up to task.
* TheBroCode: [[spoiler:The reason Lilly was so upset with Mia, she assumed Mia would automatically know J.P. was off limits. Apparently, when Mia asked Lilly if she was okay with Mia dating J.P., she should have known that when Lilly said 'yes' she was lying.]]
** [[spoiler:Additionally, this honour code doesn't seem to apply to Lilly herself, as she then starts dating Mia's ex, Kenny, the very day after breaking up with J.P.]]
* TheCavalryArrivesLate:
** In ''Braid!'', Rosagunde's love Gustav tries to rescue her from Alboin, rushing into the bridal suite and staging a coup. By the time he arrives, Rosagunde has already strangled Alboin but is relieved to see that Gustav is okay.
** Lampshaded by Michael in ''Forever Princess''. [[spoiler:He and Mia had broken up the year before, but they found they were still attracted to each other. Lilly also told Michael to go to Mia on prom night, without telling him that J.P. was planning to sleep with the princess. Michael arrives just in time to hear Mia politely breaking up with J.P. and confronting him for all his lies. He does consider beating the other man up, though, based on what he and Lars heard]].
* CerebusRetcon:
** It's a RunningGag that after Mia and Michael get together she becomes neurotic about him breaking up with her because of her flaws and lack of accomplishments. [[spoiler: Then she breaks up with him after learning of his sexual history, and as a result of the ensuing TraumaCongaLine needs therapy to realize that she has to become the change she wants to have, and to make great accomplishments.]]
** Lilly and Mia stop being friends during the first book when Lilly insults Mia for getting an UnnecessaryMakeover (at least Mia in-universe thinks it's unnecessary), but they make up by the end. Then [[spoiler: after Mia kisses J.P. by accident after breaking up with Michael, their relationship becomes strained for several books.]]
** Mia often wonders if she has some kind of mental or physical disorder or condition. Towards the end of ''Princess on the Brink'' she morosely wonders if she has dysthmia or chronic depression, even ticking off the symptoms in her diary. [[spoiler:This becomes more serious in the very next book when she begins binge-eating and spending all day in bed, too depressed even to shower or dress herself. Dr Knutz diagnoses her with stress-induced depression and starts a therapy regiment]].
* ChangelingFantasy: Mia discovers that she's the princess of Genovia. Deconstructed, as it turns out to be a lot less fun than one might expect.
* CharacterDevelopment:
** The series is a ComingOfAgeStory as Mia goes from an insecure, neurotic 14-year-old to a strong, confident, friendly woman you could see leading people (albeit still very neurotic).
** Lana goes from AlphaBitch to one of Mia's good friends.
* CharacterOverlap: One of the novels has Mia reference Sam from ''Literature/AllAmericanGirlMegCabot'' and Jess from ''Literature/OneEightHundredWhereRYou'', two of Meg Cabot's other works.
* ChekhovsGunman:
** [[spoiler:The Guy Who Hates It When They Put Corn In The Chili, John Paul "J.P." Reynolds-Abernathy the Fourth, ends up becoming Mia's boyfriend after she and Michael break up in the eighth book.]]
** Prince Rene, Mia's cousin whom Grandmere wants her to date, ends up [[spoiler: running against Mia's dad ]] when Genovia has [[spoiler: elections for prime minister]].
* {{Cloudcuckoolander}}: Tina is this sometimes. Mia comments several times that she "wonders what it's like in Tinaland. Everything must be very shiny there."
* ComicBookTime: Subverted. The series takes place over four years, as Mia attends high school but the release of the books took around ten years (the first one was published in 2000, the last in early 2009). Despite the use of ComicBookTime, the books use heavy pop culture references and specific dates so it's pretty clear what year the book is set.
* ComingOfAgeStory
* ConsummateLiar: Mia. Although other characters eventually work out she has the tell of her nostrils flaring when she lies. [[spoiler: J.P. counts too.]]
* DamselOutOfDistress: Rosagunde was this in the past. A would-be chieftain tried to marry her after murdering her father and made her drink wine out of his skull. Rosagunde bid her time, waited until he was asleep and drunk, and strangled him. The prince of the region was so impressed that he founded Genovia and made her the first princess.
* DeadpanSnarker: Lilly Moscovitz. Mia herself sometimes.
* DeliberateValuesDissonance:
** Grandmere to almost everyone else.
** Discussed when Mia's mother talks about ''Literature/JaneEyre'', namely of Mr. Rochester's wife being a MadWomanInTheAttic. Helen points out that confinement in an attic was more humane than most insane asylums at the time.
** Mentioned about ''Braid'' as well. Lilly is miffed that she was chosen to play Alboin's mistress, and argues with Grandmere that her character is no more than a prostitute. Grandmere points out that on the contrary, a mistress to a powerful leader is a gracious courtesan and commands a lot of political influence, especially for the time period. It's a plot point for the Mistress, actually, that she worries about Alboin tossing her in favor of Rosagunde.
* DerailingLoveInterests: J.P. in the last book.
* DidntThinkThisThrough: Lilly tries to release a new school literary magazine titled ''Fat Louie's Pink Butthole'' and publishing her own stories in it. Oh, and she tries to charge money for it. Principal Gupta gets wind of it, heads to the cafeteria where Lilly has set up her booth, and busts her because the stories in question are NC-17 and not appropriate for underage students. The gym teacher confiscates the copies and promises refunds to everyone who made a purchase; students selling items on school property is SeriousBusiness. As an added bonus, the teacher advisor in charge of the club, Ms. Martinez, is chided for not reviewing the copies before they were published and is ordered to do so for the new ''Zine'', as the magazine is retitled.
* DisproportionateRetribution: [[spoiler: Lilly]] creates a hate site all about Mia due to being a WomanScorned [[spoiler: over J.P.]] instead of just telling her. [[spoiler: Lilly]] [[MyGodWhatHaveIDone is ashamed of it]] in Book Ten, even asking, "How do you forgive something like that?"
* DistractedByTheLuxury: Usually averted but in Book 2, much as she's aware her mother doesn't want a big fancy wedding, Mia can't help but be delighted by her maid-of-honor dress. When she tries to bring up this up, Grandmere distracts her by having the wedding planner show her the matching shoes.
* DorkHorseCandidate: Mia, and later, Lilly.
* DownerBeginning: ''Princess Mia'' and ''Royal Wedding'' have these. [[spoiler: Mia's suffering a TraumaCongaLine in the former, and in the latter her stepfather is dead and her ''biological'' father has been arrested for driving a race car down the New York streets.]]
* EarlyInstallmentWeirdness: In the first book Mia is pretty nonchalant around Michael, even finding him kind of annoying but warms up to him and seems to have picked up on his crush on her near the end. By the second book (which is set only a week later), she's been "completely in love with him for years" and is ObliviousToLove, two facts that carry over into the other books.
** Though Mia is clearly attracted to him: there are quite a lot of references to Michael having his shirt off at home and she tends to pay attention to any physical contact between them.
** In the first book Michael is a huge nerd and a loner. By the second Mia says that it's well-known that he's the third hottest guy in their school (although she might be biased since she loves him).
** In the first book, she talks about how she would rather spend the apocalypse with Michael rather than Josh, but doesn't admit it to Lilly because she doesn't want to make things weird. She also constantly compares Josh Richter to Michael when she does end up on a date with Josh.
* EpicFail: Boris punching Hank in the face. Hank is totally unscathed while Boris has to go and get his knuckles splinted and is unable to play the violin for a few days.
* EmbarrassingRelativeTeacher: Mia's mum starts dating her geometry teacher, and eventually marries him, making him her stepdad. In something of a reversal, she initially finds it most embarrassing seeing him around the house, as it feels very weird to see a teacher comfortable in her home space like that, but it certainly makes things more awkward at school, too.
* EveryoneLovesBlondes: Mia, and later Boris and Lilly have their hair dyed blond when they undergo their [[TheMakeover makeovers]].
** Also, [[LovableAlphaBitch Lana Weinberger]] and [[JerkJock Josh Richter]] both have blond hair. As does J.P..
* EveryoneHasStandards: Even ''Lana'', albeit [[spoiler:after she becomes friends with Mia]], thinks that [[spoiler:Lilly's behavior towards Mia for "stealing" J.P. was out of line. Having been in the same situation in book one when Josh broke up with her to date Mia, Lana ought to know. She does her best to comfort Mia and take her for a mani-pedi to cheer her up when Lilly makes Mia cry. It says something that Mia realizes how Lana is a better friend than Lilly ever was, even with the former's shallowness]].
* EvilMatriarch: Grandmere. Is also a CoolOldLady at times, as well as a {{Magnificent B|astard}}itch.
* ExtremeDoormat: ''MIA''- the reason she lies all the time is to avoid hurting others by telling them her true feelings. This causes major problems for her.
* FanGirl:
** Tina is a fangirl of [[ThinksLikeARomanceNovel all things romantic.]]
** Mia is a devoted ''Franchise/StarWars'' fangirl, and fond of ''Anime/SailorMoon'' in the early books, even if she judges all the nerds in school.
* FictionFiveHundred: Genovia is described as only having 50,000 residents -- a smaller population than pretty much ''any'' major or even large city across the globe! -- who don't pay any taxes, yet it's supposedly one of the wealthiest countries in the world. However, Genovia ''is'' based on the Principality of Monaco, which attracts millionaires from across the globe; and it's deconstructed in ''Royal Wedding'' when Mia says as a result, Genovians are very snobby.
* FirstGuyWins: [[spoiler:Out of all her potential love interests throughout the series, Michael was not only the first one she met, but the first one she had a crush on.]]
* FiveTokenBand: Mia's companions include the Jewish Moscovitzes, Black Shameeka, Arabian Tina, Asian Ling Su, and the implied lesbian couple Ling Su and Perin.
* TheFriendsWhoNeverHang: Despite Boris dating two of Mia's best friends and being good friends with her boyfriend, he and Mia don't seem like very close friends, though they have their moments like when they bond in ''Princess in Love'' or Boris cheers her up in ''Princess Mia''.
* GameOfNerds: viz., Michael's game.
%%* {{Geek}}s
* GeniusBonus: If Mia had actually looked up the word "libidinous" when she planned to, she would have had a major hint as to Michael's feelings toward her. (Lilly asks Michael if his actions toward Mia have 'libidinous roots' two and a half books before the latter two get together. [[DramaticallyMissingThePoint Mia is impressed by her vocabulary]].)
* GeniusDitz: Tina.
* GenreSavvy: Tina again. She ThinksLikeARomanceNovel and thus knows people's intentions within a romance novel setting.
* GermansLoveDavidHasselhoff: In universe. ''Lilly Tells It Like It Is'' wound up being very popular in Korea.
* GlamorousSingleMother: Subverted with Helen. On one hand she's a gorgeous, successful artist with a nice artist loft in Manhattan with an active social life. On the other hand she can only afford her home and Mia's school because Philippe pays for it all and Mia's childhood was full of moments of her mom messing up, like their power being cut off.
* GoodAdulteryBadAdultery: More bad than good.
** Lilly cheats on Boris with Mia's cousin and a busboy and later breaks up with Boris. He doesn't take it well.
** Becomes a case of LaserGuidedKarma [[spoiler: J.P. was emotionally cheating]] on Lilly, pining after Mia instead.
** Following a platonic lunch date, [[spoiler: Mia and Michael have a passionate makeout session in a horse carriage]] while the former is in a relationship with another guy. Mia has a lot of mixed feelings about it. Dr. Knutz tells her the right thing to do is [[spoiler:break up with J.P. before things get too serious]].
* GrandeDame: Mia's grandmother.
* GranolaGirl: Mia is a vegetarian and often gives donations to Greenpeace.
* GreenEyedMonster: Lilly sometimes has this about Mia, since Mia is a princess, gets the part of Rosagunde in ''Party Princess'' and has a few guys like J.P. chasing after her. GenreSavvy Tina picks up on this and tells Mia.
* HardTruthAesop:
** You can't quit being who you are. While you can grow and change as a person, fundamentally you are going to remain the same. Sometimes this means you will remain a decent compassionate human being, and other times it means that your {{Jerkass}} nature will constantly hurt others. Mia wants to no longer be a princess because she ''likes'' living in the loft with her mom and staying under the radar. Her dad tells her to suck it up; she's his daughter, and the princess life comes with that. [[spoiler:While Lilly tries to be nice, her actions end up making Mia feel worse over the books, and that's not even going into TheReveal that J.P. is as creepy as Mia initially thought he was]]. Lana is the exception, in that Mia realizes that she's not a bad person, just shallow and InnocentlyInsensitive.
** Even if someone cares about you as a friend, their toxic influence will hurt you. Lilly is a terrible friend to Mia at times, yelling at her for things that weren't her fault like Grandmere surprising Mia with a makeover courtesy of Paolo. While she has a few nice moments, like calling out Josh Richter for not knowing Mia is vegetarian, she is a jerk. It culminates to. breaking point where [[spoiler:Lilly's hate site of Mia causes the latter to develop bad depression, so bad that she spends days in bed and refuses to go to school or even shower]].
** Even if two people love each other and seem perfect, they sometimes need to break up to mature and improve their character. Lana becomes a much better person when she and Josh break up for real, in part because she realized that [[spoiler:she and Mia were being ridiculous in pining after him and that Josh wasn't worth it]]. In book ten, when Mia and Michael finally talk about [[spoiler:their breakup]], they admit that they both messed up. [[spoiler:Michael actually says that Mia had every right to be angry with him because he withheld rather important information about his sexual history. Mia tries to insist that she was being immature, but Michael says that she wasn't wrong to call him out for not mentioning that he had helped Judith Gershner cheat on her boyfriend]].
* HeIsNotMyBoyfriend:
** J.P.. Mia doesn't want to date him because she just broke up with her long-time boyfriend. An article in the ''New York Post'' saying they should get together because they're both "so tall and blond" doesn't exactly help. Also, everyone thinks he's the perfect "rebound" guy for her.
** And a year and a half when she dating him, [[spoiler:[[OldFlame Michael]] comes back from Japan. Mia still has feelings for him. Tina can tell, and constantly pesters her about it.]]
* GracefulLoser: Lana after losing the presidential election to Mia. The worst thing she does is try to BlackMail Mia about messing up the school budget in exchange for invitations to a celebrity charity, and mock her ImportantHaircut of ''Princess on the Brink'' by calling her Literature/PeterPan. She then TookALevelInKindness following Mia's [[spoiler: break-up with Michael]] and acceptance of an invitation to speak at Domina Rei. In fact, Lana recommended Mia as a speaker because of the latter's presidential speech.
* HerCodeNameWasMarySue:
** At some point, Mia tries to write stage plays based on her diary entries. They come out as honest and hilarious as you may expect.
** J.P.'s play is this in full, where he portrays himself as an OnlySaneMan that ends up becoming a prince and Mia as a "kook" and DamselInDistress. Mia is not amused, though she doesn't confront him about it until the end.
* HeroicBSOD: Mia spends Book 9 trying to pull herself out of [[spoiler:clinical depression]].
* HiddenBackupPrince
* HypocrisyNod: When Boris tries to comfort Mia and says she's unreasonable for [[spoiler: taking to bed after the nasty breakup with Michael]], Mia points out that he smashed a globe on his head [[spoiler: when Lilly cheated on him and broke up with him.]]
* {{Hypocrite}}: [[spoiler: Lilly breaking friends with Mia for kissing and then dating her ex - at the same time as she herself makes out with and then dates Mia's ex-boyfriend Kenny. This only serves to further muddy Mia's understanding of Lilly and J.P's breakup, since Lilly doesn't give her a truthful account of what happened until after the two-year TimeSkip to book 10.]]
* IJustWantToBeNormal: For most of the series Mia wants to just go back to her old life. In ''Royal Wedding'' she admits at the beginning that if there had been more Internet and social media, she would've found out long before entering high school.
* InformedAbility: Tina is apparently smart enough to become a surgeon (and later a gynecologist). We don't see much evidence of this but it's not impossible, given her personality, that she's a BunnyEarsLawyer.
* InnocentlyInsensitive: Boris in books 8 and 9, though he has good intentions.
* InsecureLoveInterest: ''Both'' Michael and Mia suffer from this. Michael feels he needs to prove himself worthy of dating a princess, and Mia considers herself not intelligent enough to date a genius.
** Tina has a bit when Boris comes back from the Hamptons looking hot and she worries he'll dump her for someone thinner.
* InsistentTerminology:
** ''Braid!'' isn't a play, it's a musical.
** Applebee's doesn't have Bloomin' Onions, that's Outback.
* InsufferableGenius: Lilly.
--> NOBODY can relate to me… maybe because I’m a genius, and that’s intimidating to people, or something. I don’t know why, really. I mean, you would think people would want the smartest leader they could find, but instead, they seem perfectly content to elect total MORONS.
* ItsAllAboutMe:
** While generally kind-hearted, Mia sometimes falls in to this. A notable example was in ''Princess on the Brink'', where she had a BSOD for half the book because her boyfriend was leaving for a year to build a robot that could save thousands, if not millions, of people's lives and lessen suffering around the world. Multiple characters call her out on her attitude.
** Lilly has a tendency to sideline other people's, particularly Mia's, feelings in favour of her own. For example, she films Mia without her consent and publicises it on her TV show with the justification that Mia wouldn't have said yes if she'd asked. In another example, when upset over the fact that Boris is dating Tina, she completely disregards that she was the one who cheated on and broke up with him, not to mention how insensitive she was in the face of his subsequent upset.
* IvyLeagueForEveryone: Somewhat justified, as the series takes place at an upper class private school in New York.
** And even then most don't get their first choice college, and as Lana points out, she (and perhaps some other students) have parents who are legacies.
** In the election debate in book 6, Lana promises to get everyone into Ivy League schools if they elect her. Part of Mia's reaction and response is pointing out that nobody is guaranteed entrance to an Ivy League school, even if they had parents who went there.
** Mia herself manages to be accepted to every Ivy League school. However, it is very obvious that she was only accepted because she is a princess and a celebrity. This greatly disappoints Mia and she ends up not going to any of them as a result, preferring to go to Sarah Lawrence.
* IWasQuiteALooker: Although Grandmere's beauty has seen better days and now is wrinkly with tattooed make up and drawn on brows, she and Mia both note that she was quite a beautiful fashionista in her youth.
* JerkassHasAPoint:
** In a point of BrutalHonesty, Philippe tells Mia that after she's outed as a princess that she can't just quit when she asks to go back to her normal life. She already made an agreement to a compromise on how her princess lessons will go, and it's not something she can just renege.
** Grandmere has a number of moments:
*** Sometimes being a princess means that you don't get to do what you want.
*** In response to Lilly's concern about ''Braid!'' talking about MaritalRapeLicense in a lighthearted musical, Grandmere points out that ''lots'' of musicals have heavy material. Mia is chagrined by this one in particular.
** Principal Gupta points out to Mia several times that she needs extracurriculars, so as to look good for college. Mia blows her off, but later is disappointed when several colleges accept her by default and not because she earned her way.
** Lana also is mad at Mia for a while for going to the Diversity Dance with Josh, her (temporarily ex) boyfriend. Mia later realizes Lana had every reason to be mad at her and apologizes; Lana forgives her, because by that time Lana and Josh had been broken up for several years.
** Lilly also has her moments due to being an InsufferableGenius, the main one being that [[spoiler:Mia should have known better than to kiss and then go on a "platonic" date with her ex, who turns out to be a tool]].
* JerkJock: Josh Richter.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: Lilly and Grandmere. Michael at times, especially in the early books.
* KarmaHoudiniWarranty:
** One of the things that Lilly never suffers consequences for is [[spoiler:cheating on Boris with a random employee at the Plaza]], and the most Mia does is [[spoiler:keep the two apart and support Tina in her relationship with Boris. Then come a few books later, she gets a crush on J.P. and tries to sabotage his view of Mia by releasing an unauthorized NC-17 magazine at high school, featuring a story that Mia wrote about J.P. committing suicide. This gets her in trouble with Principal Gupta, and then when J.P. dates her, he spends most of the time emotionally cheating on her and planning to get together with Mia when he gets the chance]]. To a lesser extent, [[spoiler:making a personal hate site about Mia and posting embarrassing footage of her ought to have gotten her expelled, especially when she admitted to owning it loudly in the cafeteria. It's not like Mia and Michael ever forget Lilly did it, though; Michael reads her the riot act offscreen for being so immature and petty, and Mia admits they aren't close friends like they once were in ''Royal Wedding''. Tina and Shameeka outright consider Lilly the TokenEvilTeammate of their group when she reconciles with Mia]].
** Meanwhile, with [[spoiler:J.P. we learn that he was using Lilly to get close to Mia, whom he thought he liked because she was nice to him, but he actually liked her royal status. He manages to break Lilly's heart and manipulate Mia for several books, until Mia finally figures out that he's a liar and confronts Lilly about it. Then Mia breaks up with him, cancels his play, and leaves him stranded when he planned to write with her in Hollywood for a year]].
* KickTheDog: A literal example. Princess Amelie writes in her journal that no one in the family liked her Uncle Francesco because one time he kicked their dog.
* LockerMail: In one sequel, Tina convinces Mia to sign up for the week-long SecretSanta. Mia immediately forgets that she did that, and so mistakenly thinks the flowers left on her locker each day are from a secret admirer.
* LonersAreFreaks: Mia sometimes thinks this, but the series plays with the trope.
** Tina was a loner in high school due to her bodyguard and overprotective father. When Mia sits with her, however, she finds out that Tina is sweet and thinks highly of everyone.
** Played straight, then subverted in Book 7 with The Guy Who Hates It When They Put Corn In The Chili (aka John Paul "J.P." Reynolds-Abernathy IV).
*** [[spoiler: But in the end played straight, since J.P. turns out to be a ManipulativeBastard in Book 10.]]
* LoveTriangle: Many, the main ones being Michael/Mia/J.P., Mia/J.P./Lilly, Lilly/Boris/Tina. Some more minor ones are Michael/Mia/Kenny, Mia/Michael/Judith, Boris/Lilly/Hank, Boris/Lilly/Jangbu, Mia/Josh/Lana.
** LoveDodecahedron, as of Book 6 or so on.
* TheMakeover: Subverted in that Mia thinks her makeover makes her look worse, and after a while she goes back to looking like she normally does ("like a blonde Q-tip") and her looks aren't brought up very often after that. Played straight later on when [[spoiler: Lana starts giving her fashion tips.]]
* MaritalRapeLicense: Mia's ancestress Rosagunde fell victim to this when an invader forced her to marry him and drink wine out of her dead father's skull, which led to other things before she strangled him with her hair. Lilly points this out when Grandmere wants to make a musical about Rosagunde.
* MicroMonarchy: Genovia.
* TheMistress: Grandmere's musical 'Braid!'' has Alboin both forcing Rosagunde to marry him, and seeing a mistress on the side. The play emphasizes that she's not just trapped due to love, but also due to his power. Lilly is not amused when she's cast as the Mistress, not the least because it's basically a prostitute position. Grandmere reminds her that due to DeliberateValuesDissonance, a king's mistress was a courtesan and respected member of the nobility.
* MrMuffykins: Grandmere's poodle Rommel is a mix of type one and two of this trope.
* MyGodWhatHaveIDone:
** How Mia feels at the end of ''Princess on the Brink,'' and after [[spoiler: kissing Michael]] in Book Ten.
** [[spoiler: Lilly]] has been feeling like this since the end of Book Nine and through Book Ten.
* MySisterIsOffLimits: Mia worries about a gender-flipped version of this from Lilly, leading her to make a list of worst things about liking your best friend's brother: Can't tell her. Can't tell him because he might tell her. Can't tell anyone else because they might tell him or her...
* NamedInTheSequel: The Guy Who Hates It When They Put Corn in the Chili is first mentioned in book 2, and is occasionally mentioned in passing in subsequent books. It wasn't until book 7 that Mia (and the readers) learn that his name is J.P. Reynolds-Abernathy the Fourth.
* NiceGirl: Mia is this most of the time. Also Tina.
* NoodleIncident: "I will apologize to the Genovian olive growers about that thing with the pits."
* TheNoseKnows: Mia frequently comments that she loves the smell of Michael's neck. In the last book, she realizes that there's a scientific explanation for it during her psychology exam.
* NumberedSequels: The UK versions of series have fun with this; the sequels are called ''The Princess Diaries: Take Two'', ''The Princess Diaries: Third Time Lucky'', ''The Princess Diaries: Mia Goes Fourth'', ''The Princess Diaries: Give Me Five'', ''The Princess Diaries: Sixsational'', ''The Princess Diaries: Seventh Heaven'', ''The Princess Diaries: After Eight'', ''The Princess Diaries: To the Nines'' and ''The Princess Diaries: Ten Out of Ten''.
* ObliviousToLove: Mia. If you want to let her know about your romantic intentions, do not be subtle about it. Just straight up tell her or she will never realize it.
** Before they got together she thought Michael tutored her in algebra (''daily'') because she was Lilly's friend, that he asked about what she did on the weekend so they could do more algebra, that his song about her was just 'some guy' who liked 'a girl,' and that he wandered about shirtless by accident. Yeah...
** Mia was unaware that Kenny had a crush on her and was her secret admirer until he asked her out.
** She also couldn't tell J.P. was into her either despite him [[spoiler: dumping Lilly the day after she broke up with Michael, asking about her constantly and him going out of his way to spend time with her, including inviting her out to see her favorite Broadway musical.]]
** And happens AGAIN with Michael in ''Forever Princess'' where she can't tell that he's obviously still in love with her.
* OffscreenMomentOfAwesome: We only hear about it secondhand, but Michael [[spoiler: pulled off an epic WhatTheHellHero speech on Lilly when he found out about the hate site she created about Mia and told Lilly to be nice to the latter. It worked, given that Lilly is TheAtoner in Book Ten.]]
* OffWithHisHead: This is how one of Mia's ancestors dealt with an invader, by sneaking into his tent and cutting off his head. Mia is impressed when Grandmere tells her this tale.
* OnceDoneNeverForgotten:
** Deconstructed. Lilly for a long time is mad at Mia for [[spoiler: "stealing" her boyfriend when in actuality J.P. manipulated them against each other so that he could have Mia for himself]]. The thing is that Mia says if Lilly had told her about [[spoiler:what J.P. said during the former's breakup]], she would have known. Plus, even Lilly admits that [[spoiler:when she realized what J.P. did, she felt guilty about creating the hate site and figured that she couldn't ever apologize for that]]
** To a lesser extent, Mia's friends never forget how [[spoiler:nasty Lilly becomes in their junior year. Shameeka explicitly says that Lilly "used to be cool" but is now a giant jerk. Even sweetheart Tina has nothing nice to say about Lilly when she's brought up in conversation and goes with DamnedByFaintPraise]].
* TheOneThatGotAway: For Philippe Renaldo, Mia's mother Helen. He tells Mia that letting her go was the worst decision he ever made even though she didn't want to be a princess.
* OnlyKnownByTheirNickname: The Guy Who Hates It When They Put Corn In The Chili. It's revealed late in the series that his name is J.P..
* OneDialogueTwoConversations / OneSceneTwoMonologues: In Book Two, Mia's phone call from her grandmother after her interview airs. Starts as the former, with both saying the interview went terribly. Mia thinks so because of the negative things she said about her teachers and fellow students; Grandmere thinks so because no SceneryPorn shots of Genovia were edited in. It turns into the latter as the conversation goes on, with each talking past each other about their own complaints.
* OOCIsSeriousBusiness:
** In Book 2, Mia's mother expresses guilt for sending her parents to stay in a hotel. Mia thinks it's a pregnancy hormones since Helen doesn't get along with her parents.
** Mia in book 9, which is lampshaded. While spending HeroicBSOD [[spoiler: in bed, only getting up to binge eat desserts and ''meat'']], Grandmere shows up and demands that Mia attend a Domina Rei function and make a speech. Mia to make Grandmere go away agrees politely. As a result, Philippe appears in the loft and [[spoiler:forcibly drags Mia to therapy to snap her out of her depression]].
** Boris is established as being an incessant violin player, which is why the other kids in G&T make him practice in the closet against his wishes. In Book 9, when he comforts a sobbing Mia, he ''willingly'' goes into the closet and plays one of her favorite tunes.
* OppositesAttract: Mia considers herself and Michael this, as opposed to her BirdsOfAFeather relationship with J.P., even finding a scientific explanation (see TheNoseKnows above). In actuality, she and Michael have a lot in common, [[UnreliableNarrator she just has a hard time seeing it that way]].
* OrdinaryHighSchoolStudent: At least, ordinary private school student.
* ParentsAsPeople: While they are GoodParents Mia's mother is a flighty artist and her father is a [[TheCasanova casanova]] prince, so they fall under this trope as well.
* PerverseSexualLust: More than once Mia's friends tease her about her weird love for two-dimensional guys, including "ComicBook/{{Hellboy}}, WesternAnimation/{{Tarzan}}, [[WesternAnimation/BeautyAndTheBeast the Beast]], [[WesternAnimation/{{Daria}} Tom Sloane]], [[WesternAnimation/{{Mulan}} and that hot soldier guy]]".
* PetTheDog: Grandmere has her occasional moments:
** Defending Mia and taking her dress shopping for her dance date with Josh Richter, despite Mia's parents disagreeing.
** Encouraging Mia in book 3 to go to the Nondenominational Winter Dance and not spend the rest of her life hanging out on a fire escape.
** Actually asking Mia what she wants for her birthday, then choosing "end to world hunger" off the list and sponsoring an orphan in Mia's name
** After blackmailing Mia into playing Princess Rosagunde for ''Braid!'', gives her the money [[spoiler: to make up the deficit in the student government that Mia created]].
** Saying that [[spoiler: she might have been wrong about Michael when Michael donates a Cardio Arm to Genovia without any preemption in Book 10. And suggesting that Mia sleep with Michael and J.P. to see which does better in bed, much to Mia's horror.]]
* PinocchioNose: Mia's nostrils flare when she lies. She starts practicing with Grandmere to correct this.
* PoliticallyActivePrincess: Mia.
** Also GenderInverted with Mia's dad, as it's actually wondered by one of the other characters why [[spoiler:Philippe bothers to run in the Genovian election]], and Mia specifically responds with something similar to this trope.
* PoorCommunicationKills: Mia falls into this a lot, both as the person communicating the information and the one receiving the information. [[spoiler: This is the biggest cause of her falling out with Michael and Lilly in the later books, though they do eventually make up.]]
* PreppyName: Justified as most of the characters are either royalty or are wealthy and actually go to prep school. John Paul Reynolds-Abernathy IV is probably the most egregious example.
** Mia herself qualifies; her full name (and title) is Amelia Mignonette Grimaldi Thermopolis Renaldo, Her Royal Highness the Princess of Genovia.
* PrincessProtagonist: Princess Mia.
* PrincessesPreferPink: ''Princess in Pink'' [[ExactlyWhatItSaysOnTheTin where Mia wears a pink dress to prom]]. The maid-of-honor dress she wears for her mother's wedding is also pink. Mia turns it into a Glinda the Good Witch costume for Halloween [[spoiler: when the wedding falls through.]]
* PunnyName: Mia's shrink, Dr. Knutz, which is lampshaded by Mia.
* PurpleIsPowerful: Grandmere frequently wears purple. In the first book, Mia theorizes that this is because the color is associated with the aristocracy.
* QuirkyCurls: Mia started out with them but her make-over flat-ironed them away.
* RaceForYourLove: Subverted. [[spoiler:Mia races to the airport to meet Michael before his plane leaves for Japan. She's too late -- his flight has left.]]
* RealWomenDontWearDresses: In-universe: Mia spends a couple of pages wangsting about how her grandmother [[FelonyMisdemeanor took her to an expensive hairdresser]]. Same goes for painted nails. To be fair, part of her complaints are that they make her look like [[AlphaBitch Lana]].
** Averted with Mia's own list of women she admires, where she lists women like: her mom, Lilly, a lady cop she saw, Music/{{Madonna}}, [[UsefulNotes/DianaPrincessOfWales Princess Diana]], UsefulNotes/HillaryRodhamClinton, Picabo Street, Leola Mae Harmon (whose life story she saw on Creator/{{Lifetime}}), UsefulNotes/JoanOfArc, and Literature/{{Christy}}.
** In one of the last books when Mia's trying to publish the romance novel she wrote, many people -- namely J.P. and Grandmere -- fuss over the fact that it's a ''romance'' novel. Never mind that it's 400 pages long, she did tons of research on medieval times, she spent two years working on it, and it's actually one of the hardest genres to write well.
* ReallyGetsAround:
** Mia's father to the point where [[spoiler: there's a sequel series about Mia's half-sister called ''Literature/FromTheNotebooksOfAMiddleSchoolPrincess''.]]
** Lilly, starting with her cheating on Boris with Mia's cousin Hank.
** Prince Rene until he gets married to Bella.
* TheReasonYouSuckSpeech:
** Lilly to [[spoiler: Mia]] in Book Nine, which includes Lilly angrily announcing that [[spoiler: she created the hate site about Mia]]. Later, Lilly is very regretful about it.
** Offscreen, Michael gave one to Lilly about [[spoiler:creating the hate site and bullying Mia for something that wasn't her fault. Whatever he said, it was enough for Lilly to go MyGodWhatHaveIDone]].
** Mia gives one to [[spoiler: J.P.]] for telling about a dozen lies, including [[spoiler: that he broke up with Lilly merely because Mia had broken up with Michael.]]
* RebelliousPrincess: Mia is ''extremely'' displeased to find out that she's a princess, largely because of all the stereotypes associated with the position. It should be noted that her parents specifically limit the amount of money she's allowed, and her new title requires her to spend years being trained in courtesy and diplomacy by her overbearing grandmother, who she legitimately hates. She grows into the position eventually, but most of the series devotes itself to answering; "What would a shy, anxious teenager with all the responsibilities of royalty and very few of the automatic privileges be like?" Answer: Not very happy.
* RewatchBonus: [[spoiler:A lot of things J.P. says to Mia take on a new light after you read ''Forever Princess'' and reveal his real motive for dating her for the publicity. Also a lot of the things he says about Lilly, while not ''always'' lies, can be re-read as a method of manipulating Mia into not feeling bad about going out with her former best friend's ex-boyfriend.]]
--> [[spoiler:'''J.P.:''' The fact that you’re a princess is really special. I've never understood why you've never thought so. Most people would kill to be royal, and yet you spend all your time wishing you weren't. Not that being royal is all that makes you special... by any means.]]
* RichBitch: Lana and Trisha. [[spoiler:They both get better.]]
* RidiculouslyCuteCritter: Fat Louie.
* RousingSpeech: Mia gives two. One when she's running against Lana for the post of StudentCouncilPresident, and another when she gets invited to speak at a Domina Rei function.
* RoyalsWhoActuallyDoSomething: Subverted. Mia's dad is an active leader and later even runs for Prime Minister in order to continue leading even after Mia reveals the constitution, Grandmere is pretty content to just be a RichBitch. Mia, for her part, wants to be somewhere in the middle, a princess but able to pursue her own ambitions separate from Genovia.
* SheIsAllGrownUp: Boris, who actually manages to turn hot later in the series.
** Mia becomes this trope over the course of the series, which is {{Lampshade|Hanging}}d by other characters in Book 10, and she lands in a "Hot" column in a magazine.
* ShipperOnDeck: Tina tends to ship her friends, especially Mia. Mia's mom and Mr G also seem to ship Mia/Michael, as does Lars, though he is very discreet about it. Grandmere however ships Mia/J.P.. Mia herself ships Boris/Tina in later books though its mostly to protect Boris from Lilly after she cheated on him.
** In Book 9, Lana ships J.P. with Mia, believing that he can be her rebound guy. Later Lana, Trisha and Tina start to ship Mia/Michael when the latter reappears.
* ShoutOut: Several, including ''Series/{{Firefly}}'', ''Series/BuffyTheVampireSlayer'', ''Series/{{Degrassi|TheNextGeneration}}'', ''Franchise/StarWars'', ''Literature/TheLordOfTheRings'', and ''Franchise/SailorMoon''.
* ShutUpKirk: When Lilly expresses worry that the plot of ''Braid!'' involves, among other things, MaritalRapeLicense and war, Grandmere points out that lots of musicals have heavy stuff, like ''Theatre/SouthPacific'', ''Theatre/WestSideStory'', and ''Theatre/JesusChristSuperstar''. Mia is chagrined that Grandmere has actually made a good point.
* SilentSnarker: Lars manages to come across as this despite it being a book.
* SilkHidingSteel: Mia's ancestors have a tradition of this, starting with the first Genovian princess Rosagunde that strangled an invading king after he forced her to marry him and drink wine from her father's skull.
* SingleGirlSeeksMostPopularGuy: Only in the first book, where Mia has a huge crush on Josh, the most popular guy ([[JerkJock who's a huge jerk]]). He only pretends to like her once she finds out she's a princess.
* SingleWomanSeeksGoodMan: For the rest of the series.
* SoapboxSadie: Lilly. Mia occasionally gets into this territory as well.
* SpoiledSweet: Tina Hakim-Baba's father is an overprotective oil baron who gives his daughter a bodyguard and an allowance of $50 a week. Tina is the nicest character in the series.
* SpringtimeForHitler: Realizing that J.P. may have crush on Mia, Lilly tries to quash that by publishing the story wrote about J.P. committing suicide in the new school lit zine. It doesn't work; when J.P. finds out about Mia confiscating the copies, he's actually flattered that Mia wrote a story about him (she didn't tell him the details) and [[spoiler:starts dating Lilly to get closer to Mia]].
* StrawFeminist: LILLY, to the point where she writes an "essay" about [[TallPoppySyndrome famous women she is jealous of]] and why they should all go away to a desert island for being beautiful. Creator/KeiraKnightley and Creator/HalleBerry are some of the actresses on this list.
* SympatheticPOV: Some of Mia's actions look a lot less sympathetic once you hear Lana and Lilly's side of the story. Mia herself realizes this as she matures.
** Also we the reader are supposed to view some of Mia's actions and thoughts as ridiculous, like if she and her friends believe they are behaving like intellectuals but are actually behaving like silly teenage girls (for example, Mia and Tina's inability to understand Ms. Martinez liking ''Film/PrideAndPrejudice2005'' for reasons other than "how hot Creator/ColinFirth looked"). However, since Mia is the one writing it, she doesn't understand how silly this comes across as. In fact this is one of the main sources of humor in the series.
* TheSnarkKnight: Lilly, so, so much.
* StylisticSuck: Zigzagged. ''Braid!'' gives the performers a week or two to perform at Broadway levels [[spoiler:for Grandmere's Genovian Olive Oil Farmers benefit]]. Some can't dance, as Mia notes with Kenny, and Mia thinks she sounds terrible when she sings. Even so, Grandmere perseveres, getting them instructors and making them rehearse for several hours a day. The end result may not be Tony-winning, but the audience gets emotionally invested in the narrative. Mia herself is surprised that the show is going better than expected. She also hears the audience {{Gasp}} at the moment where Rosagunde strangles Alboin.
* TalentedPrincessRegularGuy: Inverted with Mia and Michael. Mia's relationships with J.P. and Kenny could also count, since they are both incredibly smart and talented as well.
* TheirFirstTime: [[spoiler:In the later books, Mia and Michael plan for this, but it is called off by Mia when it turns out it ''isn't'' his first time.]]
* ThereAreNoTherapists: Averted in books nine and Ten. Also, Lilly and Michael's parents question Mia when she goes over to their apartment and Lilly tries to imitate them.
* ThinksLikeARomanceNovel: Tina does this, making her GenreSavvy in a romantic comedy series. Mia sometimes lapses into this.
* ThisIsReality: In Book 10, Mia tries this mindset by saying "Life is not a romance novel" after [[spoiler: Michael walks out of her birthday party on seeing J.P. invite Mia to prom with a "promise ring."]]. The book itself subverts this, however.
* TookALevelInJerkass: Lilly wasn't nice before, but she goes WAY overboard [[spoiler: during books eight and nine after J.P. breaks up with her.]] Thankfully this reverts [[spoiler: during book ten]].
* TookALevelInKindness: After years of being an AlphaBitch and a bully to Mia, Lana offers friendship following Mia's TraumaCongaLine in Book Nine, since Mia accepted an offer to speak at Domina Rei. Following a shopping spree at Bendel's, Mia realizes that Lana is much like Lilly.
* ToughLove: While Mia is right that her grandmother ropes her into various schemes for ulterior motives -- like playing the lead in ''Braid!'' alongside a producer's son in hopes of getting the producer to not buy an island replica of Genovia -- Grandmere also genuinely wants to help Mia get out of her comfort zone and realize she has confidence.
* ToxicFriendInfluence: Mia obliviously thinks that the "fun" she and Lilly have is harmless. She recalls fondly getting kicked out of a bookstore when Lilly harassed an author at a signing about her divorce and sending one of Lilly's stalkers on a WildGooseChase. Michael has to be the OnlySaneMan in book two when Lilly dares Mia to drop an eggplant out of the Muscovitz apartment building; he points out that even if it was just an eggplant, Mia could get arrested for causing a public disruption and orders Lilly to not show the footage of her friend doing the deed. [[spoiler:It says something that when the local AlphaBitch Lana decides to befriend Mia in ''Princess Mia'', the worst thing they do is ditch school for coffee or mani-pedicures. Mia also eventually admits that Lilly is not a good friend at times, wanting the adventure and thrills rather than having to pay consequences]].
* TwoDecadesBehind: Tons of references to [[Film/PrettyInPink classic]] [[Film/SayAnything 80's]] [[Film/DirtyDancing teen]] movies and TV shows like Series/PartyOfFive and ''Series/{{Charmed|1998}}''.
* TwiceShy: A thousand times Mia and Michael. It's implied Michael's had feelings for Mia long before the beginning of the series, and Mia realizes she has a crush on him during the first book. Even though EveryoneCanSeeIt and they hang out every day, they take three books to admit they love each other, even dating other people in the middle. To finally clear things up they resort to sending anonymous love letters and replying via a computer program.
* TheUnfairSex: Tina is curtly dumped via text message by her boyfriend after she continuously fails to return his calls -- she and Mia were following Grandmere's advice about keeping lovers at a distance and and not chasing boys -- leading to her friends calling the boyfriend a sexist pig. (It doesn't help that earlier she had to bribe him to stay in the relationship when she wanted to take it further.) Granted, he broke up with her in an obnoxious way, but nobody calls ''Tina'' out for being rude enough to ignore his phone calls for several days because she's already a sobbing mess and it would be kicking her while she's already down. Only Mia's mother, while she was trying to get Mia to understand how stupid this approach to romance is, points out that it's just plain rude not to call someone back, especially if you're in a relationship with them. Tina averts this later on when she dates [[spoiler:Boris]].
* UnreliableNarrator: While Mia doesn't mean to lie in her diary, she often has memory lapses or a [[NaiveEverygirl rose-tinted]]/[[ComicalOverreacting melodramatic]] reaction to what is going on around her and completely misinterprets people's motives.
* VisualPun: In ''Princess In the Spotlight'', Lilly wears a black slip and a beard for her Halloween costume. She's a FreudianSlip.
* WackyParentSeriousChild: Helen Thermopolis is a free spirit who has to be reminded to pay the bills on time; Mia's father is a serial womaniser who later gets arrested for driving a race car down the New York streets. Mia meanwhile is highly-conscientious, a dedicated environmentalist and a worrier.
* WantingIsBetterThanHaving: Prince Philippe and his romantic conquests. He thinks that Helen is his one true love but assisted her in eloping with Mr. Gianini.
* WhatDoesSheSeeInHim/[[WhatDoesSheSeeInHim What Does He See in Her?]]: This trope goes both ways in the relationship between Mia and Michael. And Mia keeps asking herself this, which creates a lot of Wangst.
* WhatTheHellHero:
** Mia calls out Michael for [[spoiler: not only helping Judith Gershner cheat on her boyfriend, but not telling Mia that he had lost his virginity.]] Note that Mia is a health freak and a minor with self-esteem issues. Later on Mia regrets this, but Michael ''two years later'' admits that she was right.
** Lilly towards Mia for [[spoiler: kissing J.P. after the latter had broken up with Lilly, and then going on a "platonic" date with him. This leads to a two-year rift between the two.]]
** Michael towards [[spoiler: Lilly]] for creating a hate site about Mia, and orders her to be nice to the latter. [[spoiler: Lilly later on]] says that the reason she didn't try to make amends is because "how do you apologize for something like that?"
* WhatYouAreInTheDark:
** Lilly on facing hers and Mia's stories getting rejected by ''Seventeen'' decides to release an independent literary magazine, with most of the stories written by her. Mia's story features the "Guy who hates it when they put corn in chili" throwing himself in front of a bus. Only then Mia invites the kid to sit with them for lunch after he auditions for Grandmere's play, and realizes he's a nice kid. Lilly insists on running the story, so Mia with J.P.'s help goes to steal the copies of the first issue from Lilly's locker and toss them . . . and realizes that she can't do it. Even if it ruins her friendship with J.P. -- it doesn't because [[spoiler:J.P. had already developed a crush on her]] -- she doesn't want to ruin Lilly's hard work, and returns them to the locker. The point becomes moot when at lunchtime Principal Gupta busts Lilly for distributing NC-17 stories, and confiscates all the copies.
** Michael failed this one: [[spoiler:he slept with one of his classmates, Judith Gershner, who already had a boyfriend, for some reason. And didn't tell Mia until she was about to initiate their first time, after he had been pressuring her for a year and a half to sleep with him. He could have contracted an STD or such, and Mia already feels insecure about not measuring up as a girlfriend. As Michael admits later, he should have told her upfront but was being a {{Hypocrite}} and not respecting Mia's health concerns.]]
** Lilly also fails this in junior year: [[spoiler:J.P. breaks up with her and tells her that it's because he's going after her best friend, the newly single Mia. Rather than tell Mia upfront, Lilly gets angry on seeing Mia accidentally kiss J.P. for being nice to her, and uninvites her from her presidential election victory party. Then she creates a hate site all about humiliating Mia, despite the fact that her loudly admitting to it in the school cafeteria could have led to her getting suspended or expelled if Mia or her father wanted to pursue that point. Much later on, Lilly is ashamed when Michael calls her out for what she did, and realizes that she messed up badly. She then tries to make amends by creating a beautiful campaign video for Philippe without telling Mia what it is, and assigning Mia to interview her brother for his Cardio-Arm]].
** It's revealed Boris [[spoiler:has been spying on Mia for Michael after the two break up; while Michael wasn't ready to get back together with Mia, he trusted Boris to be a good friend to her. Boris comforts Mia after Lilly yells at her in the cafeteria, and willingly goes into the supply closet to play her favorite music. He also doesn't interfere when she goes on a rebound relationship with J.P., merely observing]].
* WideEyedIdealist: Tina, whenever romance is involved. [[spoiler:Subverted a bit when Tina reveals to Mia that she's been sleeping with Boris regularly for about a year or so, but she still has an overly idealistic attitude about love.]]
** Mia can also be like this when romance is involved, as pointed out by her parents.
* WillTheyOrWontThey: Michael and Mia in the first three books, and then again in the last one. [[spoiler: They do. Twice.]]

----
!!Tropes for ''Royal Wedding'' include:

* AbusiveParents: [[spoiler: Olivia]] is NOT HappilyAdopted with her aunt and uncle; her aunt is an ExtremeDoormat who cares more about stains on the carpet, and her uncle is a construction mogul that uses the child support payments to fund his projects.

[[CallingTheOldManOut I don't want to live with you]] because all you cared about when I walked in was [[SkewedPriorities getting the stain out of your stupid carpet.]] [[ShutUpHannibal ''They'' cared about what happened to me. That's why I want to go live with them.]]
* BelligerentSexualTension: Helen and Philippe had this when they conceived Mia, and it comes back a year after [[spoiler: Mr. Giannini dies.]]
* BigNo: Much like her older sister, [[spoiler: Olivia]] delivers this when she hears that she has to go back with her AbusiveParents for a short time until Philippe and Mia sort out the custody issues.
* BigBrotherInstinct:
** Downplayed between Mia and Rocky, since Rocky is now nine years old and a bit of an AnnoyingYoungerSibling for Mia, who doesn't live at home anymore, but she obviously still loves him. It helps that he's no longer a newborn in need of protecting.
** Played straight between [[spoiler: Mia and Olivia]], given the battle over custody is due to Mia realizing that the latter lives with AbusiveParents who want to move her to Qalif, a country that is infamous for oppressing women, and using the custody money to fund a construction empire.
** Averted with Olivia's cousins, who didn't lift a finger to help her when the school bully busts her nose bloody and treat her as either someone to hang out if they're out of the AlphaBitch crowd or a means to charge kids for the privilege of sitting with a princess at lunch.
* BilingualBackfire: While driving [[spoiler: Olivia]] to New York, Mia and Grandmere have a rapid, tense conversation in French about the Qalif refugee situation. 341* EvilRedhead: Grandmere holds this belief, at least towards those of a lower class than hers (she's fine with Prince Harry and movie stars yet thinks [[Franchise/HarryPotter Ron Weasley to be the villain instead of Voldemort]]), Olivia's {{Jerkass}} Uncle and her cousins fill this role perfectly.
* {{Expy}}: As a "birthday present," J.P. sends Mia a dystopian novel featuring a love triangle between a blonde and a brunette. [[Literature/TheHungerGames Sound familiar?]]
** J.P. has a history of putting people he knows into his books/screenplays/plays and giving them similar names. The heroine, "Amalia", is torn between blond, creative "Jared" (John Paul) and brunet, analytical "Mick" (Michael). In the manuscript, as in his fantasy life, "Amalia" prefers "Jared."
* FictionFiveHundred: Mia has now joined this legion as an adult and princess of Genovia; she can write a check for $30,000 without blinking an eye. 350* GoodCannotComprehendEvil: Discussed in this book; Mia mentions how good people can easily get taken advantage of, and she is very hurt and confused when it turns out her stalker is [[spoiler: her ex-boyfriend J.P.]].
* HollywoodMidlifeCrisis: Mia's dad suffers one throughout the book.
* HopeSpot: PlayedForLaughs when Mia thinks that she at least has some say in how her wedding will go. Grandmere sends the SnobsVsSlobs equivalent of a HaHaHaNo text saying that they won't have a taco bar or mini grill-cheese sandwiches. Eventually, however, [[spoiler: some compromises are made.]]
* {{Jerkass}}:
** Count Ivan, Philippe's rival in the polls. He uses the Genovians' xenophobia about refugees from Qalif to earn points, all the while [[spoiler: making a special deal with cruise lines so that they can bring their boats in]]. Mia nearly tells him off at a party and Grandmere has to stop her.
** Uncle Rick for [[spoiler: Olivia]], who ''laughs'' when she talks about how his lawyer's daughter punched her at school and said lawyer threatened to sue the school and the Genovian Guards if they laid a finger on his daughter.
* KarmaHoudini:
** Annabelle Jenkins apparently suffers no comeuppance for [[spoiler: giving Olivia a bloody nose]], even with the Genovian Royal Guard watching her. (However, ''Literature/FromTheNotebooksOfAMiddleSchoolPrincess'' reveals that [[spoiler: ''Genovia'' is now suing her ''and'' her father for the assault of a member of the country's royal family.]] )

He delivers a brief TheReasonYouSuck speech to [[spoiler: Olivia's aunt about how Olivia's mother]] wanted her daughter to be loved, and it's certainly not the case.
** He also acts as ReasonableAuthorityFigure about his stepson Rocky talking about farts and volcanoes.
* PetTheDog: Because Grandmere and [[spoiler: her other granddaughter Olivia]] bond over poodles, Grandmere gives the latter her new poodle as a gift. Grandmere wanted to keep the latter a secret and under wraps before, for pragmatic reasons.

** At the end of the book, the Royal Genovian Guard persuades [[spoiler: J.P.]] to work on a Russian icebreaker.

* SnobsVersusSlobs:
** As it turns out, because Genovians are a relatively wealthy population, they look down on the refugees coming from Qalif that may potentially carry TB.
** [[spoiler: Olivia's]] aunt accuses Mia of being a "snobby, rich princess," to which Mia takes offense, and it's an unreasonable accusation given Mia has founded a community center that aids children in need.

* SurprisePregnancy: [[spoiler: Mia is pregnant with twins!]]

* TheTalk: Mia's mother gives it to her in Book Ten.
* TokenEvilTeammate: You would expect Lana would be this, but [[spoiler:it's actually Lilly. While Mia has forgiven Lilly for the hate site, they aren't as close as they once were. Mia even mentions that Lilly is the most devious of her friends, as shown when she helps locate Olivia and identify her living situation with underhanded means]].
* TookALevelInJerkass: J.P.! Not only does he try to sell tickets to Mia's wedding, but it turns out [[spoiler: he was stalking Mia as Royal Rabble Rouser]] while asking her to read his dystopian novel.
* TheUnfairSex: Happens in-universe, with Mia acknowledging it. When Tina finds nude photos of Boris with a fangirl, Boris claims that the girl edited them and that he would never cheat on Tina. Michael, who is Boris's friend, advises Mia to listen to both sides of the story, while Mia tells Tina to keep away from Boris. [[spoiler: As it turns out, the photos ''were'' edited; apparently Boris and Tina made nude photos together and the girl got hold of them.]]
* WhamLine: Grandmere delivers it: [[spoiler: Mia, you have a sister.]]
----
