----
* ''WesternAnimation/AbbyHatcher'':
** Abby herself has a portion of the theme song play during the LockAndLoadMontage, with a more quieter variation played during the scenes where a problem is solved.
** A three note ascending horn plays whenever Abby activates one of her gadgets.
** The Fuzzlies each have their own leitmotif according to their personalities. There's an elegant theme for Princess Flug, a disco theme for Harriet, a jazzy piano with tapping shoe sounds for Mo and Bo, squeaky flutes and piccolos for Teeny Terry, jangly marimba music for Otis, a bouncing bongo theme for Curly, and a light flute theme for Grumbles.
** The silly Chef Jeff has an Italian-sounding theme whenever he appears.
* ''WesternAnimation/AdventureTime'' does this sparingly, mostly for one-shot characters. For example, Lemongrab's leitmotif is a quiet, out of tune harpsichord and/or piano played at an irregular rhythm, and it often gets louder when he yells. His leitmotif is pretty subtle, but it helps to underscore just how bizarre and awkward his character is. It almost sounds like there are mistakes in the music, or that the piece doesn't make sense- which is fitting, because he is a failed science experiment.
* In ''WesternAnimation/{{Alphablocks}}'', X has superhero music when he arrives.
* ''WesternAnimation/TheAmazingWorldOfGumball'': Mr. Small’s appearances are usually preceded by the strum of a sitar.
* ''WesternAnimation/AmericanDad'' has Stan's high school bully [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i1nPGM-2Q0w Stelio Kontos,]] who not only has a distinctive theme song played over every scene he appears in, he also carries a stereo around with him so that he can play his own theme song in place of actually speaking.
** Later when he teams up with Steve's new bully Luis they stopped to record a [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VVDx-wbmZbU new version of the song]] with Roger recording.
* In ''WesternAnimation/{{Amphibia}}'', all three human girls (Anne, Sasha, and Marcy) have their own leitmotifs. Anne's Theme is heard the most frequently: both because she's the main character and thus has more screentime than the others, and because [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8jdubuXqOGA variations]] [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=006cP2ixhVg of]] [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZCkV7vWcLWQ her]] theme are used for the ending credits of each season.
* In ''WesternAnimation/{{Animaniacs}}'', whenever the characters of one segment made a cameo appearance in another they would be accompanied by a few bars of their own segment's theme (the ''Animaniacs'' theme served as the motif for the Warner siblings, specially when they appeared in ''WesternAnimation/PinkyAndTheBrain'' and ''Freakazoid!'').
** Slappy Squirrel's leitmotif was "Humoresque" by Dvorak.
** Certain actions warranted their own theme music too. For example, a character eating was usually accompanied by "Shortnin' Bread" and a character cleaning something would be accompanied by "Here We Go 'Round the Mulberry Bush". This is an obvious callback to Carl Stalling's work.
* ''WesternAnimation/AroundTheWorldWithWillyFog'':
** The melody from the theme song is associated with Mr Fog and his bet. It's usually heard when our travellers manage to board their train or ship, when they succeed or prevail against all odds or if they help someone.
** There is a relaxed piece of music for moments when the party is not stressed and they can enjoy themselves, for example when they spend time on deck playing games, or when they eat or go for a stroll in their newest destination.
** 'Princess Romy in danger', a leitmotif for the evil priestess and worshippers of goddess Kali who want to sacrifice Romy. Heard several times when Romy's rescue takes place and in flashbacks.
** Princess Romy romantic leitmotif is heard when she's being adorable. It's also used often whenever she has a romantic moment with Mr Fog.
** Inspector Dix and Constable Bully have a distinctive tune, repeated in moments when they mess up, whenever Dix realizes he can't arrest Mr Fog or when Bully is seasick or homesick.
** Transfer, the villain who tries to undermine Mr Fog, has a brief sinister theme whenever he makes a sudden appearance and thinks about his evil plan.
* ''WesternAnimation/{{Arthur}}'':
** It has a riff that plays at the ends of episodes, usually if it's a particularly victorious ending.
** There's another theme that happens when characters are doing a ZanyScheme.
** Whenever there's a circus, parade, or similar, there'll usually be one of two HappyCircusMusic themes.
** There are two themes that both seem to play whenever something related to aliens or sci-fi happens.
** There's a jaunty tune that plays in imagining sequences and when characters are dancing.
** There's a short riff that plays when the scene changes.
* ''WesternAnimation/AsToldByGinger'' had themes for some of the characters in the show. Caral's theme and Blake's theme were some of the more memorable ones.
* [[TeamPet Momo]] of ''WesternAnimation/AvatarTheLastAirbender'' has a distinct upbeat theme that goes with how his presence is used as an indicator of things being less serious.
** For the reverse, [[MagnificentBastard Princess Azula]] has a "[[http://www.avatarspiritmedia.net/interviews.php?id=4 meticulously malevolent]]" bell-like twinge that can be heard [[https://twitter.com/theforcebender/status/1277276129745870849 almost every time she's onscreen]]. [[HeroKiller Usually a sure sign that something bad's about to go down.]]
*** PlayedForLaughs during the volleyball scene in "The Beach".
*** [[spoiler:And when she's in the middle of her VillainousBreakdown, we're treated to a disjointed amount of strings.]]
** Any time we see the Blue Spirit, we hear a "Tsungi Horn", a fictional instrument in the show made by altering the sound of a duduk. When he is engaging in stealthy moves, this changes to a vaguely bell-like sound, crescendoing and decrescendoing in time to the understated action. (This theme was even played briefly when the still-unpurchased/unstolen Blue Spirit mask went past Zuko and Iroh on a cart, before the character of the Blue Spirit emerged. You ALWAYS know when the Blue Spirit is about!)
** Apparently, [[http://soundtrack.net/features/article/?id=252 every major character has a theme]], as well as each nation, and one for the OfficialCouple as a pair [[spoiler:which gets a particularly swelling version in the last scene of the series]]. Iroh apparently had several, and Zuko's changed over time with his CharacterDevelopment.
*** There's a cool moment in "The Boiling Rock" where Zuko and Sokka's leitmotifs are played together, signifying that they have become [[HeterosexualLifePartners BFFS.]]
** Zuko and Azula share a Leitmotif because they're brother and sister. They just arrange it differently and use slightly different instruments so his sounds determined and serious, and hers sounds girlish, yet creepy.
** Sokka and Yue also have one, though it may or may not count as a leitmotif since it is essentially an instrumental version of the song Iroh sang in the episode Yue was introduced.
** Ozai's leitmotif once he's introduced as a character in the third season sounds scary and menacing, but in a cold, calculating way. When he announces his plan to [[spoiler: burn down the Earth Kingdom]], some insane-sounding violins are added to it.
* ''WesternAnimation/TheBackyardigans'' has a recurring 13-note theme that plays when Pablo [[FreakOut has a panic attack]].
* In ''WesternAnimation/BatmanTheAnimatedSeries'', nearly every character, and every villain, had a leitmotif that was associated with them. Nearly every leitmotif, with the exception of the Joker's, originated in the title card for their premiere episode, and thus was featured strongly in the soundtracks of the episodes they appear in.
** The episode "The Strange Secret of Bruce Wayne" gives the best example when The Joker, Two-Face, and The Penguin all exit a plane one after the other. [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9DZHynZbB5Y Their respective themes]] play them off the plane, and blend seamlessly from one to the next.
** Batman's theme himself is quite possibly one of the most memorable ever conceived for the character, arguably moreso than Danny Elfman's from the 1989 movie (which Shirley Walker's interpretation has many themes in common with).
** Two-Face, for example, had a [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IE3zCTC-Kpg short but haunting two/three tone melody motif]] that would play every time he was onscreen (whereas most had their motifs simply played in larger scenes), even if the episode had nothing to do with him (i.e., if a character was passing by his cell in Arkham).
** The Joker, whose theme never played in a title card, had a [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Df9RJaFQ0Y&feature=related whimsical but subtly creepy theme]] (plays at the end) that had a different version of it played (ofttimes with completely different instruments) for every episode he appeared in.
*** [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i8wXlnmtyfM THIS]] video even has a subtle almost fourth-wall breaking nod to the theme of the animated Joker at the end.
** This idea was used ''expertly'' in "Perchance to Dream". As Wayne races to the top of a church belltower [[spoiler:the Mad Hatter's theme is being played by heavy brass (as opposed to light, cheerful flutes as per norm)]] despite the fact he's doesn't appear to be involved in Bruce Wayne's current plight. Discerning viewers get to notice this, figure out the twist, and feel happy.
** In the origin story for Harley Quinn, the Joker is [[LeaningOnTheFourthWall whistling his theme]] the first time they meet.
** ''WesternAnimation/BatmanBeyond'' mostly had its own music, but would occasionally do a callback to leitmotifs for the previous series, and in the episode "Out of the Past," when Bruce Wayne is temporarily restored to youth and vigor, he and Terry take out the trash to a rock-anthem treatment of the BTAS main theme.
*** The very first time this callback happened in WesternAnimation/BatmanBeyond was in the first episode during the last time Bruce appeared wearing the batsuit Terry would wear years later.
*** Another notable - and very effective - callback to the original [=BtAS=] score occurs in the episode "Disappearing Inque," when the aged Bruce Wayne appears in a suit of Batman PoweredArmor to come to Terry's rescue.
*** Yet another one; in the episode "The Call", a brainwashed Superman ends up fighting Terry, and then follows him when he gets on the Batplane and goes to Mach 3. As this goes on, his theme plays in the background, but there is something ''wrong'' about it, somehow...
*** It gets slowed and "darkened" to show that Supes is NotHimself.
** In ''WesternAnimation/SupermanTheAnimatedSeries'', the first line of the theme music serves as Superman's Leitmotif. Used to creepy effect in "Identity Crisis" with TheReveal of Bizarro, whose leitmotif has the first three notes in reverse order, and adds instruments to "darken" it.
*** In the episode "A Little Piece of Home", a thug named Joey had an awesome jazzy theme. It's a shame he only appeared in one episode.
* In ''WesternAnimation/BatmanTheBraveAndTheBold'', Franchise/WonderWoman's leitmotif is ''the [[Series/WonderWoman Lynda Carter series]] theme''! Complete with a chorus singing "Wonder Woman!"
* Several characters and situations in ''WesternAnimation/{{Ben 10}}'' have these.
** The hoverboard music.
* ''WesternAnimation/BewareTheBatman'' follows the example of ''B:TAS'' and features leitmotifs for the main characters, several supporting characters, and nearly every single villain. Anarky's theme stands out as a particular, ''Sherlock''-like theme to emphasize his rivalry to Batman. Some characters even have multiple themes, such as Batman's brooding and detective themes, or Harvey Dent having a regular theme and [[spoiler: a separate Two-Face one after "Epitaph"]].
* ''WesternAnimation/BlazeAndTheMonsterMachines'':
** Each of the Monster Machines get a music genre that plays in the background when they show the ability unique to them: lively rock for Blaze, a somewhat sinister melody for Crusher, a goofy pop theme for Pickle, a jungle theme for Stripes, a lively country/western theme for Starla, a prehistoric melody for Zeg, a hard rock melody with a wailing guitar for Darington, and a synthetic line for Watts.
** OncePerEpisode, there's a theme that plays whenever Blaze unleashes his [[SuperSpeed Blazing Speed]], which is remixed after the first season.
* ''WesternAnimation/TheBoondocks'' has Uncle Ruckus whose presence is always preceded by a trombone tune, reminiscent of Jabba the Hutt's theme. Although not heard until Season 2, it is quickly noticeable.
* The 1970s British pre-school cartoon ''Bod'' had a prominent theme tune for each of its characters, all of which were short, simple and catchy so that kids would memorize them quickly.
* ''WesternAnimation/TheCasagrandes'' has mariachi music play whenever a scene changes or when there's a montage.
* ''WesternAnimation/{{Humf}}'': One episode had a certain tune play whenever Humf and his dad found that another character wasn't at home.
* ''WesternAnimation/LooneyTunes'':
** Carl Stalling's piece "What's Up, Doc?", which opened most of WesternAnimation/BugsBunny's shorts from the late '40s onward. This theme was used over the WB logo in Film/LooneyTunesBackInAction and a jazzy version was used on the credits of WesternAnimation/TheLooneyTunesShow. The cartoon of the same title even [[WithLyrics gives it a set of lyrics]].
*** Whenever Bugs made a cameo appearance in another WB cartoon, the Merrie Melodies theme would cue up. He made an appearance in the George Pal Paramount Puppetoon "Jasper Goes Hunting," and the accompanying music was an ersatz variation of the Merrie Melodies theme.
** Stalling was addicted to the use of Leitmotif, to the point that [[Creator/WarnerBros Warners]] animators joked, "Now, don't draw anything with a red pencil, or Stalling will give us [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PUE3Mr2_VYI 'The Lady in Red'!"]]
** "Dance of the Comedians" from ''The Bartered Bride'' is used for WesternAnimation/WileECoyoteAndTheRoadRunner.
* On ''WesternAnimation/CatDog'', Winslow had a brief 4-note tune that usually played when he came out of his hole.
** Lola had a Latin tune whenever she appeared.
* In ''WesternAnimation/{{Chuggington}}'', Action Chugger has his own theme.
* X.A.N.A. doesn't have one, but two themes in ''WesternAnimation/CodeLyoko'' and several variations of both.
* In ''WesternAnimation/CodenameKidsNextDoor'', [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=67CAgARLviQ the spy-esque opening theme]] with variations becomes the music for the greater KND organization as a whole. In addition, [[PsychoRangers The Delightful Children from Down the Lane]] have an eerie theme of their own, and the "Rainbow Monkey jingle" pops up whenever [[RidiculouslyCuteCritter said mascots]] are involved.
** Most of the show's soundtrack also features a few xylophone instrumentals, in order to accentuate its themes of childhood.
* ''WesternAnimation/CourageTheCowardlyDog'':
** The smooth, sinister beat of Katz, which is sampled from Florence Caillon's ''[[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=30AjupoaLtQ Duo]]''.
** The slow ragtime music for Muriel, the jumpy fiddle that usually goes with Eustice, the weird beat that plays whenever Courage springs into action and...[[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jAz-LuBGHSo Freaky Fred's theme]], which has even gotten some [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oL-Sx_izLic remixes]].
** The oriental sounding background music that usually follows Di Lun, ya fool.
** The hauntingly beautiful theme of [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N_Tex2AN3rI Dr. Zalost]], a brooding piece complete with a despairing choir.
* ''WesternAnimation/DangerMouse'' had two notable leitmotifs--a soft jazz rendition of the theme in opening scenes where he gets his assignment from Colonel K, and a silly lilting rendition when something, well, silly happens.
** ''WesternAnimation/VictorAndHugo'' - Bunglers In Crime' also had variations on the theme tune within the episodes. Among several bars cropping up in otherwise unique passages, there was a slower stealthy version of the theme for when sneaky work was underway, a cool piano like version for calm moments and a slightly sadder version for when the brothers inevitably failed at something.
** ''WesternAnimation/AvengerPenguins'': Almost any time Doom Tower is first shown in an episode a long eerie sting is heard. Also a sinister but slightly comical sting for whenever Mr. Doom laughs madly to close a scene. Any appearance of the Slush City ice cream parlour starts with an upbeat bouncy little sting.
* On ''WesternAnimation/DanielTigersNeighborhood'':
** King Friday has a sort of little fanfare thing that tends to play when he shows up on the scene.
** Ever since "Daniel Gets a Cold", an instrumental of "When You're Sick, Rest is Best" plays whenever a character is unwell.
** There's a certain tune that plays in the background whenever an imagination sequence begins.
** "Prince Wednesday Goes to the Potty" had a short fanfare play whenever the block towers were mentioned. That episode and "Daniel Goes to the Potty" also had a certain tune that would play whenever someone did a PottyDance and in the imagination sequence in the former episode.
* ''WesternAnimation/DarkwingDuck'' had leitmoitfs for Darkwing, Gosalyn, Morgana, Neptunia, Negaduck, Megavolt, Bushroot, and Steelbeak.
* ''WesternAnimation/DastardlyAndMuttleyInTheirFlyingMachines'' had several leitmotif during aerial action sequences, most notably a piano-led piece exclusively composed in minors during climactic scenes. ''WesternAnimation/TheNewScoobyDooMovies'' episode "The Ghost of the Red Baron" uses it four times.
* As befits [[MusicalAssassin her modus operandi]], Ember [=McLain=] of ''WesternAnimation/DannyPhantom'' was the only villain with [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AiUkmHhYACw&feature=related her own theme]], which subsequently became her leitmotif; savvy viewers later on could tell that she was back from the fact that the new radio broadcasts were playing a New Age version of it.
* ''WesternAnimation/DoraTheExplorer'':
** Sinister music will play whenever Swiper shows up. This is always started by a sound that sounds like three maracas shaking, which always clues Dora in that he’s approaching.
** Tico, Benny, and Isa each get their own similar-sounding leitmotifs when they appear.
** Boots gets a silly harmonica melody whenever he first appears or does something funny.
* In ''WesternAnimation/{{Doug}}'', several characters, including Doug's sister Judy, bully Roger Klotz and [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=spdPd3sJHog twins Al and Moo]] have their own leitmotif.
** There were several situation/emotion leitmotifs, e.g. love, sadness, anxiety, etc.
* Mike Batt composed one for both the hero and villain side in ''WesternAnimation/TheDreamstone''. The title theme "Better Than a Dream" and variations of are used for the Land of Dreams. While "The War Song Of The Urpneys" is used for Viltheed.
* ''WesternAnimation/DrawnTogether'': Wooldoor Sockbat has one that plays whenever he is doing something stupid. Funnily enough, the main instrument is a steel guitar that is very reminiscent of ''WesternAnimation/SpongeBobSquarePants'''s background music. Wooldoor, being a parody of [=SpongeBob=], it shouldn't come as a surprise.
* ''WesternAnimation/{{Duckman}}'' had a recurring theme for villain King Chicken.
** Fluffy and Uranus had a cutesy glockenspiel/celesta tune play whenever they usually appeared, too.
* ''WesternAnimation/DuckTales1987'' fans probably remember Flintheart Glomgold's leitmotif. And when it was used, but not as his theme, it usually played whenever Scrooge gets the upper hand on the villain of the week in a comedic way.
* ''WesternAnimation/EarthwormJim'': A televangelist-type song plays whenever Bob the Killer Goldfish is in a scene.
* In ''WesternAnimation/TheFairlyOddParents'', Cosmo and Wanda had one in the earlier episodes. It hardly shows up now.
* Lampshaded by ''WesternAnimation/FamilyGuy''. Peter Griffin is awarded wishes by a genie. His first wish is for his own theme song. It doesn't work until he starts marching around the house.
** Also parodied when Stewie follows fat people around playing a tuba whenever they walk anywhere.
* ''WesternAnimation/FanboyAndChumChum'':
** The two titular boys have a goofy muted trumpet/guitar theme whenever they are up to their usual business or are doing something silly.
** Scene changes are often accompanied by a four-note muted synthesizer melody.
** The ChildMage Kyle gets a haunting harpsichord theme whenever he shows up.
** The more intense scenes are accompanied by an ominous orchestra, sometimes complete with OminousLatinChanting.
* ''WesternAnimation/FostersHomeForImaginaryFriends'': Wilt, Coco, Mr. Herriman, Duchess, Goo, Cheese, and Terrence all had their own leitmotifs. Whenever Goo goes on one of her MotorMouth spiels, there's this goofy, fast music that plays.
* WesternAnimation/{{Freakazoid}}'s leitmotif plays virtually whenever the camera cuts to him.
** Every distinct character or situation gets its own leitmotif. Notably, The Huntsman.
* When ''WesternAnimation/{{Futurama}}'' featured early appearances of the Omicronians (invading Earth), a brief leitmotif can be heard.
* ''Franchise/{{Garfield}}'' TV specials and shows would mark the entrance of Odie with a brief motif based on a hunting charge.
** Wade the Duck's entrance would often be marked by a few bars of "Wade, You're Afraid".
** And Roy the Rooster's appearances were underscored with Schumann's 'The Merry Peasant'
** Binky the Clown had his own theme which sounds like an instrumental version of his name.
* Every time Cho-Cho from ''WesternAnimation/{{Histeria}}'' spoke, she'd be accompanied by the "Chopsticks" music.
* ''WesternAnimation/{{Hurricanes}}'' BigBad Stavros Garkos had the most-known (if not only) leitmotif of the series.
* In ''WesternAnimation/InspectorGadget'', every main character had his or her own theme. Gadget's was the main theme of the show, which played in almost every scene as a recurring part of the soundtrack. He also [[LeaningOnTheFourthWall whistled it sometimes]]. Penny also had a fairly thorough theme playing in each of her scenes. Brain, Quimby and Dr. Claw each had a short motif that played when their scenes began, while Claw had a longer theme that played in the background afterwards.
* ''WesternAnimation/InvaderZIM'' has "Tak's Theme", which includes a special section for Tak's robot sidekick, [=MiMi=]. Tak was only in one episode, but since she was planned as a recurring villain, who knows how long the theme would have appeared?
** There's also [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=34tKpNZsg-A&t=00m024s the little tune]] that plays whenever the Irken Armada shows up anywhere.
* In ''WesternAnimation/JusticeLeague'' and ''Justice League Unlimited'', Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, the Flash, Green Lantern and Green Arrow all have their own musical motifs (Batman and Superman retain their melody motifs from their respective solo shows). Green Arrow even hums his own theme while swinging forth into battle at one point (and it was [[SugarWiki/MomentOfAwesome AWESOME]] and [[SugarWiki/FunnyMoments hilarious]] at the same time). [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y6x9YTh173o Here is a compilation.]]
* ''WesternAnimation/KimPossible'' has a few pieces of music used in specific situations, including Rufus's theme, which was put to lyrics as the "Naked Mole Rap" in a third season episode. All the major characters also had their own individual Leit Motifs which would occasionally pop up. The most frequently was Kim's theme, a high-energy guitar variation on the show's theme tune. Ron had his own (somewhat sillier) up-tempo guitar theme, although it shows up less often. Dr. Drakken is accompanied by looming strings, although it's often replaced with a flute when he's being silly. Shego receives a techno beat. Killigan is aided by the bagpipes, while Monkeyfist often appears accompanied with a monk-like male bass chant.
* Parodied in an episode of ''WesternAnimation/KingOfTheHill'', where Dale buys a keyboard and makes up leitmotifs for the guys. During a later scene, we hear Dale playing Boomhauer's theme, which Hank uses as an excuse to leave an awkward conversation with Peggy.
* ''ATLA'' SequelSeries ''WesternAnimation/TheLegendOfKorra'' inherits some of them, most notably ones pertaining to the Avatar, while adding more of their own.
** Aang's successor and incarnation Korra has a theme that is often played together with the theme of the Avatar.
** Bolin has a short fanfare that plays up when he's doing something heroic.
** Zaheer and his cohorts are often accompanied with a foreboding percussion, with an intensifying string chord joining in when they spring into action. [[spoiler:Astute listeners can actually figure out that the mysterious airbender in "The Metal Clan" is Zaheer when this theme plays.]]
** [[ArcVillain Kuvira's]] leitmotif is a quick, militaristic drumbeat, fitting her status as a conqueror.
* ''WesternAnimation/TheLifeAndTimesOfJuniperLee'' features an interesting theme for June which is a mix of OminousLatinChanting and a series of wind instruments.
* ''WesternAnimation/LittlePrincess'' has a tune that plays at the beginning of episodes and at the end of episodes, there'll usually be a fanfare unless it's a GoToSleepEnding whereupon lullaby music will play instead.
* ''WesternAnimation/TheLoudHouse'':
** A certain theme dubbed "[[https://theloudhouse.fandom.com/wiki/Pop_Punk Pop Punk]]", is used for the title cards.
** "[[https://theloudhouse.fandom.com/wiki/Battle_March Battle March]]" is used for serious moments, or moments parodying the military.
** "[[https://theloudhouse.fandom.com/wiki/Emergency_Force Emergency Force]]" is used for suspenseful scenes.
** "[[https://theloudhouse.fandom.com/wiki/Gipsy_Speed Gipsy Speed]]" is used for scenes that are either chaotic, montages, or both.
** "[[https://theloudhouse.fandom.com/wiki/In_Tune_For_Love In Tune for Love]]" and "[[https://theloudhouse.fandom.com/wiki/Magic_By_Candlelight Magic by Candlelight]]" are used in sad moments.
** "[[https://theloudhouse.fandom.com/wiki/Old_Sleepy_Head_(a) Old Sleepy Head]]" is used for emotional moments, usually at the end of episodes.
** "[[https://theloudhouse.fandom.com/wiki/Sneeky Sneeky]]" is used for characters trying to be sneaky.
** "[[https://theloudhouse.fandom.com/wiki/Straight_from_Hell Straight from Hell]]" is used as a scare chord.
** "[[https://youtu.be/HrT323GM0YE Barbie Hearts Ken]]" became Leni’s theme as of “Shop Girl”.
* ''WesternAnimation/MarthaSpeaks'':
** There's a certain tune that plays for the title cards.
** A short tune also plays during scene changes.
** There's a tune that usually plays over either montages or teaching scenes.
* In ''WesternAnimation/TheMask'' cartoon, Stanley's dog Milo would mark his appearance with a little 5-note tune.
* ''Literature/MayaTheBee'':
** [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FIhXLH179D8&index=27&list=PLmBI17Pylfpd_1VB4COyQtZZRdpHF7UDS Willy has a very laid back character theme]] in foreign versions of the original anime compared to the American dub.
** In the new 3D animation, a characteristic music is played whenever ants appear.
* In the AnimatedAdaptation of ''Literature/MillyMolly'', a slower version of the main theme plays during sad moments.
* ''WesternAnimation/MickeyMouseClubhouse'': [[WesternAnimation/MickeyMouse Mickey]]], [[WesternAnimation/DonaldDuck Donald]], WesternAnimation/{{Goofy}}, [[WesternAnimation/MinnieMouse Minnie]], [[WesternAnimation/PlutoThePup Pluto]], WesternAnimation/{{Pete}}, Willie the Giant and Toodles have a respective leitmotif whenever they appear on screen.
* ''WesternAnimation/MollyOfDenali'': The Sassy Ladies have a country-style one that incorporates horse whinnies.
* ''WesternAnimation/MyLifeAsATeenageRobot'':
** Jenny gets a six-note synthesizer melody whenever she is fighting crime or just showing herself off.
** The Crust Cousins get a sinister theme in D minor theme whenever they are plotting against Jenny or if they get mad or jealous.
* Some, if not all, of the main characters from ''WesternAnimation/MyLittlePonyFriendshipIsMagic'' have their own. Applejack's is a bluegrass country theme, Rarity's is a classical-sounding piece featuring a harpsichord, Rainbow Dash's is a rock riff, Fluttershy is often accompanied by rather airy-sounded music courtesy of the woodwinds, Pinkie Pie's craziness is usually backed by either a frenetic xylophone or a staccato synthesizer, since Season 4, Princess Twilight Sparkle has had her own regal-sounding theme played on the horns, and Starlight Glimmer has a march sounding similar to the song "In Our Town". Discord has a distinct tune that usually plays whenever he warps reality. The characters have also been noted to be seen idly humming the main theme.
* While ''WesternAnimation/{{Motorcity}}'' usually has a rock/metal soundtrack, whenever Tennie shows up, there's this more beautiful, peaceful sounding piece of music. The Duke and Kane might have a leitmotif as well.
* On ''WesternAnimation/TheNewAdventuresOfWinnieThePooh'', Rabbit had his own theme, usually played whenever he got upset. The theme can also be heard in episodes that do not feature Rabbit, like "A Pooh Day Afternoon".
* In ''WesternAnimation/{{Numberjacks}}'':
** The villains have instrumentals of their songs as the background music.
** An instrumental of the main theme plays during TheSummation.
** There's also a theme used when the Numberjacks launch.
** A little snippet plays when [[MsImagination Five]] imagines things.
** There's a tune that plays when the Numberjacks go to the control room.
** There's a tune which is often used for when someone dances.
* ''WesternAnimation/NinaNeedsToGo'':
** Action music plays whenever Nana does something especially cool.
** A certain tune always plays at the beginning and end of episodes.
* In the ''ComicStrip/{{Peanuts}}'' specials, almost every character has their own theme (with Linus and Lucy sharing one that went on to [[BootstrappedTheme represent the entire "Peanuts" universe]]).
* ''WesternAnimation/PegPlusCat'': A short, dramatic riff will play whenever the "big problem" is announced.
* ''WesternAnimation/ThePenguinsOfMadagascar'':
** Whenever Penguins spring into action, the show's theme song is heard.
** [[BoxingKangaroo Joey the kangaroo]] has didgeridoo as his theme music, to emphasize his [[KangaroosRepresentAustralia Aussieness]].
** Officer X has his own, instantly recognisable theme, reminiscent of old police movies.
** Savio the boa has this ominous, creepy snake charmer's flute melody to emphasize his [[SoftSpokenSadist calmness while eating his victims]].
** The Amarillo Kid has western music due to having [[WildWestArmadillo a thick Texas accent]].
** Rat King has a RottenRockAndRoll music, to establish that he's a {{jerkass}} macho [[YouDirtyRat rat]].
* ''WesternAnimation/PhineasAndFerb'':
** The series has leitmotifs for various characters, including Candace (a variation on the "universal taunt" melody and a takeoff on the Witch's theme from ''Film/TheWizardOfOz''), Perry (a James Bond-inspired jazz theme), and Dr. Doofenshmirtz ("Doofenshmirtz Evil, Inc.!").
** Doobie doo ba doo wah doobie doo ba doo wah PEEEEERRRRRRRRY!
** These are used more often than you might think. For locations and catch phrases, for example. There's the "I know what we're gonna do today" pling, "What cha'doin?" cute music, spy music when Perry gets his mission, Bavarian-like music whenever Doofenshmirtz appears, and overly sad music when Doof has a flashback. There are lots more.
** Vanessa Doofenshmirtz.
** Pinky the Chihuahua is often accompanied by a mariachi band tune.
** In a few early episodes, Candace would get a ScareChord when she's ready to present the evidence to her mother.
** Jeremy has a sappy jazz theme.
** In addition, certain scenes where the boys work on their Big Idea is accompanied by an instrumental version of the theme song.
* WesternAnimation/ThePinkPanther had his own theme in all (but one) of his cartoons.
** The Inspector, Crazy Legs Crane and The Ant and the Aardvark also had their own themes appear often in their shorts. The Inspector's theme, the theme to the film "A Shot in the Dark," was first used in the Pink Panther cartoon "Dial P For Pink."
* The 1943 ''WesternAnimation/PlutoThePup'' short ''WesternAnimation/PlutoAndTheArmadillo'' features one for the armadillo - since the short is [[NationalAnimalStereotypes set in Brazil]], it's a samba. It plays multiple times throughout the short.
* ''{{WesternAnimation/Popeye}}'' has...well, "I'm Popeye the Sailor Man".
** Poopdeck Pappy has one, which is an instrumental version of his song from ''My Pop, My Pop''.
** Bluto often has the sea shanty "Blow the Man Down" as his theme. In the pilot short, "Barnacle Bill the Sailor" served as his theme.
* ''WesternAnimation/APupNamedScoobyDoo'': Doo-wop music tends to accompany scene openings.
* ''WesternAnimation/ReadyJetGo'':
** "My Name Is Mindy" for Mindy. If you listen closely, you can hear an instrumental playing when she's around sometimes.
** Sometimes, in Sean's scenes, you can hear a composition of "The Scientific Method", a song that he frequently sings on the show.
** Mitchell's appearances are usually accompanied by jazzy, noir-esque music. He ''is'' a detective, after all.
* ''WesternAnimation/TheRealGhostbusters'':
** The main theme tends to play whenever the Ghostbusters are doing something particularly impressive.
** Slimer has his own theme, which mainly plays when he does something stupid.
* Some characters in ''WesternAnimation/{{Recess}}'' have one, such as Butch, who usually has a creepy tune playing when he's around. The kindergarteners always have tribal music playing when they're around, and then there's the music that plays whenever T.J. has a plan.
** The Ashleys, the Diggers, and Hustler Kid all have their own themes as well. King Bob has one too, but it doesn't show up very often.
** Spinelli has one as well, but it doesn't show up often.
* Wilbur Cobb's appearances in ''WesternAnimation/TheRenAndStimpyShow'' were underscored with passages from Prokofiev's 'Peter and the Wolf' - specifically, the 'grandfather' and 'cat' themes.
* On ''WesternAnimation/RickAndMorty'', [[spoiler: Evil Morty's]] appears to be "[[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5SSdvNcAagI For The Damaged Coda]]" by Blonde Redhead, since it plays every time [[spoiler:his identity is revealed to the audience]].
* ''WesternAnimation/RosiesRules'': There's a certain "tick-tock" theme that plays [[OnceAnEpisode before Rosie flops]].
* ''WesternAnimation/SamuraiJack:''
** Aku is accompanied by low, malevolent, and warbling horns (mixed with a few [[ScareChord Scare Chords]] and rattling flutes for good measure) when he appears.
** Da Samurai has a hip-hop jingle whenever he appeared. He even brought his own stereo for this. Averted in his appearance in Season 5.
* ''WesternAnimation/ScoobyDooMysteryIncorporated'':
** The original Mystery Incorporated has a single piano bar that plays over and over when something related to them happens.
** Played for laughs after Mr. E gets a face reveal. There is one scene where he is talking to someone, but he's also playing the Mystery incorporated theme on a keytar. The joke is that this theme is the one that always plays whenever he starts talking, and the keytar scene canonizes this as being the reason why.
* Almost every character in ''WesternAnimation/SheRaAndThePrincessesOfPower'' has their own leitmotifs—Adora, Catra, Glimmer, Bow, Shadow Weaver, Entrapta, Mara, Hordak, Swift Wind, Angella, Razz, Perfuma, and Sea Hawk, to name a few—as do the Best Friend Squad and the Princess Alliance.
** Catra actually has two leitmotifs: one representing the side of her that thirsts for power, and the other representing her more introspective side. The latter most often plays when she's in her signature spot in the Fright Zone.
** The music from She-Ra's transformation sequence is also She-Ra's overall leitmotif, and appears throughout the show as incidental score.
* Several of the villainous characters on ''WesternAnimation/TheSimpsons'' have a Leitmotif:
** In any episode he appears, Sideshow Bob is almost always accompanied by a few ominous bars.
** Appropriately enough, given the episode it was first used in, his theme is essentially a SuspiciouslySimilarSong of the [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QH3RhbVP7cA title music]] for ''Film/CapeFear''.
*** This actually happened by accident; the composer used the Cape Fear music to drive home the parody and add to the cheesiness of the suspense. It wasn't meant to represent Bob, but since he was the bad guy, it naturally played only when he was onscreen. The producers ran with it and now it's quite explicitly his theme, always playing when he first appears in an episode (just in time for Bart and Lisa to shout in unison: "AAAAAAH! SIDESHOW BOB!")
** With (usually) each appearance, alien antagonists Kang and Kodos can easily be recognized by a haunting, other-worldly theme that follows.
** A vaguely Godfatherian/Italian musical theme accompanies most appearances of Fat Tony.
** Whenever Charles Montgomery Burns is in his mansion or is planning another evil scheme, you can bet you will hear that sinister music reminiscent of ''Film/CitizenKane'''s [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LZOzk7T93wE opening sequence]]. Release the sounds!
** Though not a villain, in a few episodes "Oh Yeah" by Yello serves as the musical cue for Duffman.
** In the late 90s and early 2000s, the Springfield Hospital had [[https://youtu.be/OrZsSUWg07U?t=127 its' own dramatic music cue]] accompanying the start of most scenes taking place at said hospital (typically accompanying an establishing shot.)
* ''Franchise/SonicTheHedgehog'':
** The version of Dr. Robotnik in ''WesternAnimation/SonicTheHedgehogSatAM'' had one. See [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=44dwsrArDX8]].
** Dr. Robotnik also had a different organ theme in ''WesternAnimation/AdventuresOfSonicTheHedgehog''. Sonic himself often utilized a remix of the original title theme from [[VideoGame/SonicTheHedgehog1 the first]] [[VideoGame/SonicTheHedgehog2 two games]].
* ''WesternAnimation/SouthPark'' has been known to do this with some one-shot characters, one notable example being Blanket from the episode "The Jeffersons".
** As of Season 20, two characters have gotten a leitmotif, those being [[spoiler:[[Creator/DonaldTrump President Garrison]] (DarkReprise of "Hail to the Chief")]] and [[KnightTemplar Lennart Bedrager]] (Tjing Tjang Tjing).
* ''WesternAnimation/TheSpectacularSpiderMan'' AnimatedSeries has leitmotifs for Spidey from ''previous animated series'' starring said [[WallCrawl wallcrawler]]. The 1960s one and the 1990s one that appeared on Fox are both audible in the soundtrack music for the show.
* The first episode of ''WesternAnimation/SpiderManUnlimited'' gave Spidey the theme song of ''WesternAnimation/SpiderManTheAnimatedSeries'' when he first appeared with the uniform he'd later replace.
* In ''WesternAnimation/SpongeBobSquarePants'':
** Scenes taking place at Mrs. Puff's Boating School often play "Horlepiep", an upbeat polka song.
** Starting in season 7, the carnival track "[[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qoNB7TmbsPM Welcome to Glove World]]" is usually played in scenes involving Glove World.
** [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A7tQSRxDaTg "Comic Walk"]] tends to get associated specifically with Squidward.
** [[BigBad Plankton]] had [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UYfxyNJNJHk at]] [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2lETeE6-8PA least]] [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iXMfVZ9Hal4 three]] in his Season 1 appearances, all of which were performed by surf punk band The Surfdusters. He also has an ''in-universe'' example to accompany his EvilLaugh: ''He actually pulls out a record player to provide villainous music as he laughs maniacally''. In seasons 5 through 7, a jazz theme called "Background Blues" could commonly be heard during Plankton scenes.
** An instrumental of "Squidward's Tiki Land" from "Enchanted Tiki Dreams" tends to play during relaxing moments involving Squidward.
** [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RXf5sTHUfKw "The Lineman"]] existed before ''[=SpongeBob=]'', but most kids will recognize it from the show. It primarily plays in action scenes involving Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy.
** Numerous sea shanty-style tracks play in the Krusty Krab. Some of the more common ones include "[[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LnTOmdnKTrI The Rake Hornpipe]]" and "[[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rbn7uxA0k4k The Tip Top Polka]]". Seasons after 5 like to use "[[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TQ_Vx80qjg8 Another Krusty Krab Day]]", "[[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=avUUsfqiQ9c Jovial Pirate's Jig]]", and the more downbeat and serious "[[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U3187DJ2VKg Daily Chores Jig]]".
** Themes called "Grass Skirt Chase" and "Sponge Monger" tend to play in suspenseful and/or chaotic scenes.
* In "A Boy's Best Friend is His Fish" from ''WesternAnimation/{{Stanley}}'' the pet store owner, Mr. Finn, speaks with an [[{{Oireland}} Irish accent]] and every time he talks an Irish-sounding tune plays in the background.
* [[LizardFolk Toffee]] from ''WesternAnimation/StarVsTheForcesOfEvil'' has a recurring [[https://brianwithanh.tumblr.com/tagged/toffee/chrono theme]] that can be heard in one form or another in most of his appearances.
** [[NightmareFetishist Janna]] also has one, [[https://brianwithanh.tumblr.com/post/183847768441/from-star-vs-the-forces-of-evil-curse-of "Janna Skelter"]], which is only heard in season 4.
* Several characters of ''WesternAnimation/StaticShock'' have their own leitmotif.
* ''WesternAnimation/StevenUniverse'', rather than just giving characters single themes, gives every major character and many supporting characters specific ''instruments''. For example, [[TheSmartOne Pearl]] is represented by classical piano, [[BigFun Amethyst]] is accompanied by hip-hop and synth drums, and [[TheReliableOne Garnet]] is followed by a bass synth. What's even cooler is that, when the characters [[FusionDance fuse]], their [[MotifMerger themes combine]].
** The [[BigBad Diamonds]] have one as well, which makes up the themes of Yellow and Blue Diamond. It also plays [[ThemeSongReveal whenever one of their actions are shown,]] such as [[spoiler: the scene in "Monster Reunion" depicting the corruption of almost every single gem left on Earth.]]
** Whenever the Gem Mutants or the Cluster appear, the music becomes creepy and distorted, with several aharmonious themes playing at once.
** Bismuth's associated instrument is a heavily distorted metal guitar, [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DRRb9QJvjRI which goes really well with her contralto]].
** A fusion's theme is a consistent indicator of how healthy the components are together. Stable fusions like Smoky Quartz and Sardonyx have themes that are harmonious, the instruments fitting well with each other. Toxic fusions such as Malachite may as well have two themes distorted and mashed together. And truly close fusions like Garnet have themes that are difficult to distinguish from that of their components.
** In general, the fact that many characters have a leitmotif of sorts causes a lot of [[MusicalSpoiler Musical Spoilers]] and [[ThemeSongReveal Theme Song Reveals]].
* The bullies in ''WesternAnimation/StickinAround'' are always accompanied by a short electric guitar riff whenever they appear on screen or say anything.
* Ravess from ''WesternAnimation/StormHawks'' has a [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PklzS0BS7v4 short string leitmotif]] whenever she and her squadron attacks. Since their weapons are violins, [[SourceMusic they're also the ones playing it]].
* The Twins in ''WesternAnimation/{{Superjail}}'' have a eurodance-esque beat whenever they appear or are about to appear on-screen.
* Digeri Dingo has his own background music that usually when he's plotting something or saying a funny line in ''WesternAnimation/TazMania''.
* ''WesternAnimation/TeenageMutantNinjaTurtles2003'' gives the Shredder an ominous leitmotif with evil {{Ethereal Choir}}s. It's even used when the Demon Shredder appears, and it fits him nicely.
* In ''WesternAnimation/TeenTitans'', Mad Mod gets a noticeable musical motif. Terra as well.
* Every engine in ''WesternAnimation/ThomasAndFriends'' had their own theme in the early years of the show. Thomas's was a variation on the main theme, Duck's was very lyrical, [[UsefulNotes/{{Scotland}} Donald and Douglas's]] theme featured bagpipes, etc. Several events were also accompanied by a recurring theme (eg. when an engine crashes or becomes a RunawayTrain).
* ''WesternAnimation/ThunderCats1985'' uses leitmotifs extensively. Each major heroic character has one (Panthro sharing his with the Thundertank[[note]]They have different arrangements, however.[[/note]]), as well as having leitmotifs for danger, warnings, certain locations, and battle. [[BigBad Mumm-Ra]] also has his own creepy tune.
* The characters get new leitmotifs in the ''WesternAnimation/ThunderCats2011'' reboot as well, the ones most often heard being Lion-O's the Thundertank's and Mumm-Ra's.
* ''WesternAnimation/TinyToonAdventures'' features "Alouette" for the french skunk, Fifi La Fume, and "I Went To The Animal Fair" for pet-obsessed Elmyra Duff. It also features ''Gaudeamus igitur,'' which plays over almost every establishing shot of Acme Looniversity.
* On ''WesternAnimation/TootAndPuddle'', Desmond, a kangaroo, has a twangy, Australian sort of theme that often plays when he's around.
* All the teams on ''WesternAnimation/TotalDramaPresentsTheRidonculousRace'' have their own theme tune (Josee & Jacques have victory fanfare, Ellody & Mary have a chiptune, Laurie & Miles have flute music, etc).
** Various major contestants in the original ''WesternAnimation/TotalDrama'' series get themes too - such as an EtherealChoir for Justin and a Spanish-sounding guitar tune for Alejandro.
* ''WesternAnimation/TheTransformers'' has a heroic march based on a six-note opening (two long notes followed by a quick succession of four short notes) for the Autobots, and a more sinister theme based on a four-note line for the Decepticons. There's also Jazz's rock theme, which itself is a track recycled from ''WesternAnimation/SpiderManAndHisAmazingFriends''.
** Vince [=DiCola=]'s score for ''WesternAnimation/TheTransformersTheMovie'' features new leitmotifs for the Autobots, Decepticons, and Unicron. The former two would be remixed into the new TV series score introduced partway through the third season.
* Megatron of ''WesternAnimation/TransformersAnimated'' has a hard, militaristic drumline. The Decepticons as a whole also seem to have a theme, consisting of severe, drawn-out strings, and [[PsychoForHire Lockdown]] has an utterly metal guitar chord.
* ''WesternAnimation/TransformersPrime'' has both the [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kDBTE3UVFHk&feature=related title theme]] and [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uljazv8EooQ "We Have Returned"]] for the Autobots, while the Decepticons have their own [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BRGgv_8cmj8 self-titled theme]] that recurs throughout several other tracks.
* Edvard Grieg's ''In the Hall of the Mountain King'' for Ms. Nomura in ''WesternAnimation/{{Trollhunters}}''. Her first battle with Jim has the original orchestral score playing, and she whistles the tune whenever she stalks him as a scare tactic.
* ''WesternAnimation/TheVentureBros'':
** An absurdly dramatic theme song always accompanies Dr. Byron Orpheus's theatrical outbursts, which comprise a majority of his dialogue. The Monarch has similar dramatic music that plays whenever he's being particularly commanding or villainous: "MINIONS!" A particularly ludicrous example of the use of Orpheus' leitmotif can be seen/heard when he's [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0vlxIevVp4Y complaining about his junk mail.]]
** Hank and Dean have a quick musical sting (the last five notes of the show's theme song)that plays whenever they get excited about something, or when they do the "Go Team Venture!" salute.
** Tiny Attorney has a laconic, slightly off-key banjo-picking motif that plays whenever he goes into his 'simple country lawyer' routine in a thick Cajun patois - which draws no attention from his being a baby-size adult conjoined to the torso of an inbred simpleton.
* ''WesternAnimation/WanderOverYonder'' has several characters with these, including [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=92dTuTO0HeY Commander Peepers]], [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xABxQjilIJ8 Lord Dominator]], [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c1HnVoHhXas Black Cube]], and several other characters.
* ''WesternAnimation/WinstonsPottyChair'': The short has a theme that doesn't seem to stand in for anything in particular; it's just there. At one point it even shows up in-universe, as music on a radio.
* The 4kids dub of ''WesternAnimation/WinxClub'' uses the first few notes of the opening song (specifically, the instrumental for the first lyric) as Bloom's theme, most prominently in season 1 when it plays during key moments for her (her first demonstration of her powers in the first episode, her being guided by Daphne out of Cloud Tower, and her reawakening the Dragon Flame inside her after the Trix stole it).
* ''WesternAnimation/WonderPets'': The episode "Save the Puppy" features a parody of "Let's Fall in Love", an instrumental of which became the episode's background music.
* ''WesternAnimation/XiaolinShowdown'':
** Each of the Monks had their own in Season 1, rarely heard after that.
*** Also, in what could be Fridge Brilliance, Season 2 introduced us to the Group Anthem, an epic heroic-sounding theme for whenever all four of them stood unified. Perhaps symbolizing that they were more unified as a group after the character development they had through Season 1?
** The villains were fond of these: Jack had a guitar riff, Wuya had an eerie mystical-sounding motif, Chase had a frightening gothic choir, while Hannibal Roy Bean... had a FIDDLE.
** Then there's Dojo's flying themes: an Asian-sounding theme in Season 1, and a much cooler heroic-sounding one from Season 2 onward.
* ''WesternAnimation/XMenEvolution'' has these for several characters, from full-on Anime-like image songs (Toad) to sinister little villain tunes (Magneto). Magneto's piece is even based on the music playing at Auschwitz at the beginning of the first live-action film. Angel, the only character in the show to operate as a traditional superhero, gets very heroic music.
** Scott and Rogue (as a duo) get one too. It's weird, seeing as they aren't the OfficialCouple, but nonetheless beautiful music.
* ''WesternAnimation/YoungJustice2010'' Kid Flash and Artemis have one in Season 2 to signify their relationship.
