* ''WesternAnimation/BeeMovie'': Ken. Yeah, the guy's got anger issues and he did try to squash Barry, but... his girlfriend was leaving him for a bee. While Barry wasn't intentionally trying to steal Vanessa from Ken, it's still hard not to feel a bit sorry for Ken.
* The eponymous Beast from Disney's ''WesternAnimation/BeautyAndTheBeast''. He starts out seeming like the monster he appears to be, but we soon learn the anguish he feels about this behavior and how it's prevented him from becoming normal again (he even has a song about it in the Broadway version). His interaction with Belle then steadily pushes him into the realm of a JerkWithAHeartOfGold. The DVD commentary discusses it in great detail, citing that no matter how bad he is your sympathy must ''always'' be with the Beast in order for the movie to work, and thus a lot of emphasis is given the constant emotional pain he lives in.
* The titular character from the French animated film ''WesternAnimation/TheBigBadFoxAndOtherTales'' is basically the often mistreated sidekick of a more villainous and ruthless wolf. [[IneffectualSympatheticVillain He tries so hard to make himself be feared by the farm animals but everyone either treats him like a joke or uses him as a punching bag or both.]] When some baby chicks imprint on him and think he's their mother, he at first acts mean to, tells them scary stories and rejects them, but eventually warms up to them. His tearful expression when the real mother of the chicks shows up and refuses him visitation rights just makes him even more pitiable.
* Joaquin from ''WesternAnimation/TheBookOfLife''. On one hand he's fairly smug, has an air of EntitledToHaveYou towards Maria, and is a bit of a sexist. On the other hand he also had [[DisappearedDad his father killed]], [[MissingMom his mother walk out on him right afterward]], seems to be a predominately good person whose negative traits came from peer pressure/trying to live up to his father, and whether he knows it or not he's a HopelessSuitor to the girl he's loved most of his life. He also lost his best friend who was like a brother to him and is being pressured to marry his other best friend when he clearly doesn't want to since they're both grieving, especially since she said she was only marrying him to get him to stay.
* ''WesternAnimation/ABugsLife''.
** Princess Atta is rather strict towards her own younger sister, Dot. Not to mention refusing to see Flik's inventions as a good thing to help the ant colony. But she is rather nervous about her problems with taking over as a Queen that you're amazed she doesn't go further.
** Molt the grasshopper. He's a bad guy himself, but the reason he's in the dirty work in the first place was that his brother, Hopper, [[EvenBadMenLoveTheirMamas made the promise to their mother on her deathbed]], that Hopper [[IGaveMyWord wouldn't kill his younger brother]].
* Anastasia and Drizella of ''{{WesternAnimation/Cinderella}}'' are a prime example of this trope. After Cinderella leaves, their mother treats them the way she treated Cinderella. They're supposed to deserve it because they bullied Cinderella, but Anastasia's plot in the two sequels proves the girls are only the way they are now because they've never been taught any better and [[AbusiveParents their horror of a mother is the only role model they've ever had]]. And Lady Tremaine's indiscriminate evil finally becomes manifest when she tries to attack Anastasia during [[WesternAnimation/CinderellaIIIATwistInTime the third movie's]] climax for having the audacity to help Cinderella, which forces Cinders herself to step in to protect her.
* The eponymous protagonist of ''{{WesternAnimation/Coraline}}'' starts off the movie being essentially a self-centered brat, although, arguably, she does have a FreudianExcuse in her distracted parents. She also goes through a lot of heart-wrenching crap: Having to deal with the Other Mother wanting to eat her and keep her for herself and wanting to [[EyeScream sew buttons on her eyes]] as well as nearly losing her parents and losing the Other Father and Other Wybie.

[[AC:D-F]]
* Funnybunny from ''[[WesternAnimation/DotAndTheKangaroo Dot and the Bunny]]'' is a mild example. He spends most of the movie trying to convince Dot that he's a joey and in general acts like an irritable and eccentric brat but at the climax of the movie [[spoiler: he breaks down in tears and tells Dot that he was orphaned by hunters and is only pretending to be a joey to find a new mother.]] Also, keep in mind that rabbits are invasive species to Australia which may or may not push him into JerkAss territory.
* [[spoiler: Prince Hans]] from ''WesternAnimation/{{Frozen|2013}}''. [[spoiler: While WordOfGod has confirmed his comments to Anna regarding his brothers treatment of him was technically true, the book ''Literature/AFrozenHeart'' (which is technically canon in BroadStrokes) shows it was much worse - as he is the proverbial BlackSheep and ExtremeDoormat of his family. His father is an [[LackOfEmpathy extremely uncaring and cold-hearted man]] who regards his youngest son as [[TheUnfavorite a throwaway]] and [[ParentalNeglect encourages his other sons to bully and humiliate him his entire life]], leaving Hans to SelfHarm to deal with his emotional stress and implying he has clinical depression. Though his mother does love him, she is an ExtremeDoormat for her husband and older sons, unable to help Hans. His trip to Arendelle wasn't even his idea, but his brother Lars, the only one who was kind to him, suggested he become Elsa's suitor so that he can never return to the Southern Isles. However, his otherwise good intentions melted away when his desperation to never go home, desire to become a king and [[WellDoneSonGuy prove his worth to his family]] slowly cause him to become more and more of TheSociopath and nearly kill Elsa. When we see him in "WesternAnimation/FrozenFever", he's still in his princely clothes, but no longer as clean and elegant as it used to be, implying he has nothing else to wear as he shovels manure in the stables. Should he never return, he will never be able to redeem himself or leave the Hell he was desperate to escape.]]

[[AC:G-I]]
* Fidget from ''WesternAnimation/TheGreatMouseDetective'' He's a criminal who definitely WouldHurtAChild but he's also a cripple who gets yelled at by Ratigan, is nearly eaten alive for leaving a clue behind, and gets tossed out of a blimp and falls into the Thames. Disney may have realized this, as Disney Adventures magazine published a comic where Fidget is a young, sympathetic sidekick (with a sketchy background) who helps Olivia solve crimes.
* ''WesternAnimation/{{Hercules}}'': Megara. Why is she a BrokenBird? Because she sold her soul to Hades to get her boyfriend back from the dead, and what does said boyfriend do? He runs off with another girl! Then she's forced to betray Hercules by Hades and gets killed when she pushes Hercules out of the way of a falling pillar, which crushes her. Thankfully she gets her happy ending when Hercules literally goes to the Underworld to bring her back
* [[HairRaisingHare Scamper]] from ''{{WesternAnimation/Igor}}'' qualifies is you think about it. He's bitter, grumpy, jaded, cynical and by far one of the most sarcastic CGI characters ever created but he's also suicidal and immortal which most likely means he'll outlive all his friends and can't do anything about it.

[[AC:J-M]]
* ''WesternAnimation/KungFuPanda1'': No trope could better describe the villain, Tai Lung. He's a snarling, psychotic ArrogantKungFuGuy that every single character is terrified of, but his [[FreudianExcuse backstory]] engenders such sympathy that the [[WordOfGod creators themselves]] worried that they'd taken it too far.
* King Haggard from ''WesternAnimation/TheLastUnicorn''. The man was captured every living unicorn in the world and plans to harm our protagonist (and his own son!), but one can't help but feel sorry for his motivation: he's never been happy in all his life, and the only thing that ever gave him joy was the sight of unicorns. Anyone dealing with depression can surely understand, when your only source of happiness is one specific thing, and how that can make one act obsessive.
* ''WesternAnimation/LiloAndStitch'' has Stitch, after he's unable to fulfill his programming. Jumba comments at one point that Stitch must be so lonely without friends or family or even memories to look back on. The only person who is kind to him during this period is Lilo, which also means that Stitch later deals with the guilt of knowing that his antics and presence are putting a ton of strain on the family and leading to their breakup. Of course, the "jerkass" part is basically gone after his HeelFaceTurn.
* ''WesternAnimation/TheLionKingIISimbasPride'' has Nuka. He's portrayed as TheUnfavourite to his mother, and seems to be the ButtMonkey of Zira's pride. While he does want power, he also wants to gain the favor and attention of Zira, who is more concerned with Kovu. In the end, he dies trying to prove himself to his mother, ''and fails at that.'' He spends his last breath apologizing to Zira for failing, his death prompting the only display of love and affection that Zira probably ever showed him.
* The eponymous character of ''WesternAnimation/{{Megamind}}''. On one hand, he's an IneffectualSympatheticVillain who regularly kidnaps Roxanne, threatens citizens with bodily harm and always tries to kill his nemesis, Metro Man. On the other hand, he lost his entire civilization to a black hole, he grew up in prison because the inmates took advantage of his genius and naivete, and was [[AllOfTheOtherReindeer ostracized in school by the kids]] because, unlike Metro Man, he looks different.

[[AC:N-Q]]
* Dave from ''WesternAnimation/PenguinsOfMadagascar''. Once living at the Central Park Zoo, [[spoiler:he had a roomy habitat and all the fans. Then started a chain where penguins unintentionally stole his glory as the octopus was moved to zoos and aquariums around the world, where he was forced to live in small tanks]].

[[AC:R-U]]
* Abbot Cellach from ''WesternAnimation/TheSecretOfKells''. He spends most of the movie as a control freak obsessed with building a wall to keep out the Vikings, to the point that he seems to care about nothing else and alienates most of the other characters. [[spoiler: Then the Vikings attack, and he witnesses the deaths of nearly everyone in the village. Worst of all, he's lead to believe he's responsible for the death of his young nephew (and only remaining relative).]] [[spoiler: After this point, [[DespairEventHorizon he is a broken man who spends decades mourning what happened]]]]. The prologue comic gives a lot more insight into his character. [[spoiler: We learn that his sister, his brother-in-law, and their ENTIRE village perished in a Viking attack 10 years before the film, and the Abbot just barely managed to save his baby nephew Brendan. After going through that, it makes sense that he would dedicate his life to ensuring Kells would be protected from such an attack and it becomes even more tragic that his efforts backfire.]]
* Plankton in ''WesternAnimation/TheSpongeBobMovieSpongeOutOfWater''. Despite being an AffablyEvil HarmlessVillain as usual, everyone wants to kill him for something [[NotMeThisTime he didn't even do]], and [=SpongeBob=] is the only person to show him any compassion throughout the movie.
* Spinel from ''WesternAnimation/StevenUniverseTheMovie''. Yes, she appears out of nowhere with the intention to wipe out organic life on Earth and attempts to kill Steven, [[spoiler:but she was abandoned in the garden by Pink Diamond, who had just gotten Earth as her first colony. [[AndIMustScream She was forced to stand in one spot for 6,000 years, not moving a muscle or doing anything.]] After finding out that Pink Diamond was gone, with Steven taking her place, she ''snapped''. Even when Steven is willing to try to be her friend after hearing about that, he accidentally convinces her that he's going to use her weapon against her, causing her to snap again (which she claims is even ''worse'' when she realizes she's trying to murder the one person who seems to like her). She admits that the entire incident really took a toll on her and caused severe trust issues.]]
* ''WesternAnimation/ToyStory2'':
** Stinky Pete, who spent his whole life stuck on a toy shelf never being sold until Al came along. Once he was finally bought, he was kept in the box as a collector's item instead of a toy.
** Al is a greedy, hostile and occasionally lazy opportunist who steals a woman's possession despite being told it wasn't for sale. Other than that, he doesn't appear to be a dishonest businessman and his trade with the toy museum was implied to be entirely fair. His visible sadness in his final scene is completely understandable, and even rational. WordOfGod even gives him a FreudianExcuse that his obsession with toys as an adult comes from the fact that his parents never let him play with them as a child.
* In ''WesternAnimation/TurningRed'', while she genuinely loves her daughter, Ming comes off as a overprotective and smothering mother. Once Mei starts to turn back and forth into a red panda, her anxiety gets the better of her, from taking her daughter away from a party and misblaming the latter's friends for being "bad companions", [[spoiler:to turning into a rampaging {{Kaiju}}-sized red panda after Mei decides to keep the red panda spirit against her wishes]]. [[spoiler:However, as Mei finds out in the astral place, it's revealed that Ming's ControlFreak tendencies are generational, since in her youth she was also pressured by her own mother to be perfect, until she lashed out at her and she lost control of her powers, accidentally scarring her, something that she never forgave herself for.]]
* ''WesternAnimation/{{Up}}'': Charles Muntz - rejected by the scientific community, eluded by a stupid bird for sixty years, all by himself, going completely insane... Of course, [[spoiler: murdering innocent people because he thought they would take his bird away makes him a bit of a monster.]]
