* ''ComicBook/AnyasGhost'':
** Anya's definitely no angel: she lies about her last name and ethnicity, conspires to steal the boyfriend of a girl who has never wronged her whilst playing nice to said girl, ditches her one friend the moment she finds another friend who acts subservient to her, and seriously believes that nerds and minorities have themselves to thank for being picked on. She does show moral backbone when push comes to shove, though. [[spoiler:She can't go through with having sex with Sean, out of pity for Elizabeth; apologizes to Siobhan when meeting up with her later; comforts Dima when he asks her how she manages to survive high school so well; and in the end stops lying about being Russian]].
** Siobhan at first appears to treat Anya poorly, judging from how much of her screentime in the book is the two of them bickering. But when one of the other girls tries to pick on Anya because she fell in gym, Siobhan immediately comes to her defense and comforts her, and her telling Anya that her crush Sean was a "dirtbag" ''was'' her genuinely trying to keep her friend from getting hurt. [[spoiler:In the end, Anya is more comfortable with Siobhan, whose friendship with her is genuine despite their rough moments, than she is with the initially-friendly-but-controlling Emily.]]
* Reggie Mantle of the ComicBook/ArchieComics. Oh, he's a self-centered ass but most of his [[JerkAss jerkassery]] is devoted to playing pranks on his friends. In fact, a lot of people have actually pointed out that ''Archie'' is a bigger jerk for playing two girls off of each other for their attention, all the while dating anything else that moves. Reggie gets around too, but he's at least [[AtLeastIAdmitIt honest about it]] and sincerely loves Veronica over any other woman. Also, when the chips are down, he's shown to sincerely love his friends and go to ridiculous lengths for them. [[DependingOnTheWriter Most of the time]]. One comic even implies him to pretend to be a jerk for whatever reason. He ends up going to great lengths to help Dilton get the woman he loves, and Reggie only asks that his actions be kept a secret in return. He has a reputation as an ass to maintain, after all.
* Phoney Bone from ''ComicBook/{{Bone}}''. He's greedy, self-centered and obnoxious, but he genuinely loves his cousins and won't leave them behind.
* The [[PlanetofHats racial hat]] of the Klegdixal from ''ComicBook/BuckGodotZapGunForHire'' is that the entire species is thin-skinned, ungrateful and obnoxious and everyone thinks they're jerks. Beyond their personality, however, they sell some of the best medical equipment in the galaxy and consistently oppose all forms of biological warfare and slavery of artificial lifeforms because they're morally disgusted by the use of technology for evil. [[spoiler:They more than happily choose to sponsor the Beemah -- a ServantRace made with Klex technology (without the Klex's knowledge or consent) that TurnedAgainstTheirMasters -- because they view it as atonement for having their knowledge being misused in such a manner.]]
* In the ''ComicBook/DisneyDucksComicUniverse'':
** Scrooge [=McDuck=], who pretends to be more of a jerk than he really is. On the rare occasion that he has a genuine charitable impulse, he attempts to hide it from everybody.
** Donald Duck also counts. No matter how bad-tempered, self-centered or otherwise annoying he may act, he genuinely does care for his family and will sacrifice just about anything for their sake. This is especially the case with his nephews, who can sometimes be the source of some of his worst tantrums. In one Denmark comic ([[https://inducks.org/story.php?c=D+2014-134&search=the%20awful%20truth The Awful Truth]]), when put under the effects of a truth ray after having an enraged fight with the triplets, rather than admonish them during a planned speech, he does nothing but praise them until he's forced to stop.
** Gladstone Gander tends to get this treatment in European comics, where his [[SmugSnake insufferable attitude]] over having been BornLucky is a bit downplayed compared to how he's portrayed in American comics and his jerkass tendencies are balanced with some shreds of decency. For one, no matter how much he may fight and quarrel with his cousin Donald, he wouldn't ever actually put him in any serious harm's way.
* The snarky outcast drow [[LovableRogue rogue]] Downer, from the comics ''Downer: Wandering Monster'' and ''Downer: Fool's Errand'' by Kyle Stanley Hunter (formerly published in Magazine/{{Dungeon}} Magazine). A down on his luck "proven loser" who survives by his wit, quick tongue, quick blade and quick reflexes (and mainly by running the hell away when outnumbered, unless he's sufficiently pissed off that he decides to indulge his inner badass and take on a whole bunch of enemies by himself). Although he considers himself an "evil bastard" who puts his own survival first and claims he's "always prepared to be screwed over by his friends", Downer has demonstrated amazing loyalty to friends and guild mates on several occasions, and he always pays back his debts. Downer's brother Aristide claims Downer is a "jerk", but then, Aristide is more of a typical drow (read: selfish and cruel) and his viewpoint is questionable.
* Hunter Hastings (protagonist of independent comic ComicBook/DruidCity) falls into this trope for much of the planned series. While his ulterior motives are not altruistic, his actions end up benefiting his community.
* ''ComicBook/Elsewhere2017'': D. B. Cooper may be a DeadpanSnarker who steals and lies but he’s a hero who forms friendships and emotional bonds with the rest of the cast.
* ''ComicBook/{{Empowered}}'':
** Sistah Spooky plays this trope the straightest, initially being presented as being callously cruel to the title character but eventually being revealed to be a fairly nice person actually.
** There's also the Caged Demonwolf, who's probably the nicest SealedEvilInACan EldritchAbomination in fiction.
** Ocelatina has kidnapped the main character a few times and exploited her for monetary gain even more times... and she's also the title character's biggest cheerleader, telling everyone who'll listen that Empowered is an awesome superhero.
* Jack Horner from the ''ComicBook/{{Fables}}'' series is written as this sociopathic jerk who is ignorant of the feelings of others. A lot of fans and critics generally hated him, to the point that series editors just casually kept him in the series because he was a CreatorsPet or TheScrappy. Still, he generated just enough fanbase, not just to keep him in the series, but also to have his own spin-off comic. His jerkiness also has its roots: he's the literal personification of ''every fictional prankster and trickster named Jack'', and so he couldn't help being an asshole most of the time. And while he does act like this most of the time, what makes him unique is that it always surprise (and admires) readers everytime he does something selfless.
* From ''ComicBook/{{Hellblazer}}'', Constantine is generally only nice when it suits him, but seems to have a soft spot when it comes to spirits with a sob story or keeping the world from getting destroyed.
* In ''ComicBook/JewGangster'', Ruby may be a hardened criminal, but he'll occasionally intervene on behalf of others, such as promising to repay a loan on behalf of a delinquent neighborhood butcher.
* ''ComicBook/JudgeDredd'' is a [[TheStoic stoic]], aggressively LawfulNeutral PrinciplesZealot, but the reason he's a dedicated ByTheBookCop is because he genuinely cares about his city and its inhabitants. He has a few PetTheDog moments here and there, and on occasion he's struggled with the question of whether ToBeLawfulOrGood such as just before the "Necropolis" arc when he feels remorse for suppressing a democratic movement.
* ''ComicBook/MiniMonsters'' has Victor Von Piro. He's a [[SpoiledBrat spoiled]] [[JerkAss jerkass]] vampire who is arrogant, [[ItsAllAboutMe selfish]], [[HairTriggerTemper hot-tempered]] and looks down to everyone. However, he shows he cares deeply for his [[AmazinglyEmbarrassingParents particularly embarrassing]] family and even his friends, helping them in a few occassions.
** Guillotine too. Most of the time, she's a [[PerkyGoth gothic]] and unsympathetic bitch who likes to bully others, but when she's with [[CuteWitch Piruja]], she switches into a kind and compassionate [[CoolBigSis older sister figure]] who will do anything to protect her and keep her happy.
* ''ComicBook/PaperinikNewAdventures'':
** Xadhoom. She's angry, abrasive, ready to punch out anyone who pisses her off, and, if you're an Evronian, out to murder you in a truly painful way. She's also willing to help anyone who needs help, and the Evronians, being TheEmpire and [[WeComeInPeaceShootToKill having destroyed her homeworld after coming in the pretense of peace]], earned her rage.
*** In one of the short stories Xadhoom answered a rescue call, and found it had been launched by an Evronian ship that had been drugged under the sea by a {{Kaijuu}}-sized octopus. Xadhoom's reaction to finding this out is to ''chase away the monster and rescue the Evronians'', because it's the right thing to do (that's before killing the Evronians. They are her enemy, after all).
** Angus Fangus. This journalist is abrasive, dirty, greedy and calling our protagonist a criminal on TV. He's also after ''any'' form of injustice, and the scoop that made him famous internationally was ''exposing a traffic of nuclear weapons''.
* Woody (of ''ComicBook/QuantumAndWoody'') won't pass any opportunity to deflate his friend's wild theories and excessive idealism, but he won't hesitate to help when the chips are down.
* ComicBook/TheSandman is notoriously insensitive, vindictive and self-centered, and his treatment of former lovers can be downright appalling. But after being imprisoned, he is more than willing to make amends (at least whenever someone calls him out for his cruelties).
** Desire, for all its faults, has at least one {{pet the dog}} moment in ''Brief Lives''.
* All of Scott's friends qualify to varying degrees from ''ComicBook/ScottPilgrim'', but the one who stands out is Kim Pine. Kim Pine may be a bitter DeadpanSnarker (with misanthropic tendencies and an inferiority complex to boot), but also a true friend of Scott, helping him with Sex Bob-Omb, despite things like [[spoiler: their relationship ending due to him moving, but the problem was him telling her via proxy (their friend Lisa) rather than her directly]] and, in volume 5, she demonstrates her friendship with him [[spoiler: faking an SMS from Ramona, ignoring her own feelings towards him, in order to give Scott support in his fight against the two exes]] she also offers him her house (and her own bed) when Scott is homeless, helps him with his depression over [[spoiler: Ramona's disappearance]] and even [[spoiler: kisses him a last time before his fight with Gideon]].
** Scott himself is something of a variation in that he is generally a nice guy who has a few mean qualities and a bit dull.
* Daphne and Velma in ''ComicBook/ScoobyApocalypse'': Daphne of the HotBlooded variety and Velma of the NoSocialSkills variety.
* In ''ComicBook/SonicTheHedgehogArchieComics'', Ash the Mongoose was introduced. From his first appearance, he had a grudge against Sonic, and was outwardly bitter. The 'heart of gold' part of his character came out when he risked his life to save Mina from a bomb in her dressing room.
* Jed Poole from ''ComicBook/StarRaiders'' yells bombastic insults at anyone within earshot, but he won't hesitate to leap into action if any of his companions are in danger. Though there are still times that he acts like a monster.
* Raphael from the ''Franchise/TeenageMutantNinjaTurtles'' in a few comics, and also more than just the comics as the first couple of films, the new animated series, and the most recent CGI film have shown.
* Cyclonus in ''ComicBook/TransformersMoreThanMeetsTheEye'' in order to maintain his reputation as a powerful warrior. It's most visible in one scene where he scorns Tailgate's offering of innermost energon, a Cybertronian ritual carried out by the bedside of a critically injured friend or loved one, by smashing the vial to the floor, then stops at the doorway and goes back to help Tailgate clean it up.
** Whirl has pretty much confirmed his Heart of Gold journey by the time of the Dying of the Light arc. He wants to be accepted despite his disfigurations, but his insanity and angry, bitter nature often causes him to make bad judgements. On the other hand, in certain specific ways he's shown an impulsive StupidGood side, when doing the right thing is incredibly dangerous or hard, but he'll still do it.
** Rodimus is a gigantic GloryHound {{Manchild}} with zero humility and a basically nonexistent sense of responsibility, to the point where a very recently reformed BigBad is a more effective captain, but he really does want what's best for his crew; he's just not very good at working out what that is.
** The Scavengers are, to a bot, abrasive, impulsive, lazy and selfish, but they're also loyal to their comrades, including Grimlock (who's both an Autobot and seriously brain-damaged). After a while, they decide that they want to help other Decepticons find a place in a Cybertron that's at peace.
** Ratchet keeps his traits from most other G1 variations, being an abrasive, cynical doctor who is also loyal and heroic, regularly [[SmallStepsHero putting his life on the line to save groups of 1-2 people he's literally never met before]]. In the DistantFinale, at first, it looks like his gravestone simply reads "THERE IS NO MEANING"; at the end, it's revealed that the full message is "''WITHOUT LOVE'', THERE IS NO MEANING".
** Brainstorm comes across as both hugely arrogant and amoral, with a noticeably callous streak, but is also a good friend to Nautica and his long-term goals ''are'' positive, even if he's often unpleasant to actually interact with.
** Swerve has a tendency to act like a bit of a tool; he's often intrusively curious about people's altmodes (right down to forcing people into them with carefully positioned strikes to the back of the head) and his pranks often cross lines (deliberately triggering [[TheMentallyDisturbed Red Alert's]] paranoia by literally {{Gaslighting}} him, for example). However, he's also a good friend to pretty much the entire crew, even if he's too down on himself to see it, and he does try to make amends when it's pointed out that he's gone too far, such as by taking the robot bouncer he treated badly on a trip to make up for it...which got said bouncer's arm blown off by the Decepticon Justice Division, but it's not like Swerve had known they'd be there.
* Spider Jerusalem from ''ComicBook/{{Transmetropolitan}}'' is a huge jerk, but he does have a heart of gold. He stands for truth and justice, he's just an ass while doing it, and has done something so small and good-hearted as comforting a lost little child and buying her pawned doll back for her.
** There is one scene which encapsulates Spider's combination of dickishness and tender heart. One day, after events have driven Spider to the brink of homicidal rage, when he walks past a busker playing "Oh, happy day!" on an accordion, while a child next to him is holding a begging cup. In the next scene the busker is [[GroinAttack lying on the ground in a ball and clutching his goolies]], two halves of an accordion are sticking up out of a nearby trash can, and the child is clutching a thick wad of bills with a beatific smile.
* Gennosuke from ''ComicBook/UsagiYojimbo'', who is, in the title character's words, "a money-loving cheat" who has managed to swindle Usagi more than once. Still, he's done several acts out of the goodness of his heart, which upsets him to no end when Usagi compliments him on it.
** The same applies to Gen's fellow BountyHunter and occasional partner Stray Dog, who shows every sign of being a ruthless, cheating JerkAss until we learn that he donates the lion's share of his profits to an orphanage.
* Praxton in ''ComicBook/WhiteSand'' is an extraordinary {{Jerkass}}, a FantasyForbiddingFather and a classist, but defied Dayside's FantasticRacism by fathering a child with a Darksider, is genuinely happy to make his son a Mastrell and would likely rebuild his relationship with Kenton if it wasn't for an enemy attack necessitating a DyingMomentOfAwesome to save his kid.
* Thor in ''ComicBook/{{Valhalla}}''. While he is genuinely honorable and kind, he is also impulsive, thoughtless and temperamental.
** It comes to a head in ''Serpent In The Abyss'', when Tyr is revealed to be of Jotun descent and Heimdall begins to cast aspersions on Tyr's loyalty. Thor, who is well-known for having a long-standing rivalry with Tyr and being most hostile towards the Jotun among the Aesir, immediately springs to Tyr's defense, stating that for all their spats over the years he has immense respect for Tyr both as a warrior and a commander, and that he considers his parentage inconsequential in light of his long and selfless service to Asgard.
* ''ComicBook/Dynamo5'': In the series it is revealed that Captain Dynamo/William Warner while boasted a public image as the greatest superhero in the world, in private, he was a habitual womanizer who cheated on his wife, Maddie Warner, and fathered numerous children, even when it compromised his crime-fighting duties. However, despite his faults, it was implied in the series that Captain Dynamo/William Warner truly did love his wife Maddie Warner and his best friend Augie Ford and cared for his former superhero partner Quake. And aside from the cheating and womanizing, he took his crime-fighting duties as protector of Tower City seriously.
* In ''ComicBook/TheLegendOfZeldaALinkToThePast1992'', Roam is arrogant, snide and condescending, but he's still out to defeat Ganon and save the world.
