Though they often act like Idiot Jerks they're actually quite smart and tend to be sarcastic and smart mouthed.
12	* Maeda Hachibe from ''Manga/AiKora'' is constantly starting or getting into trouble for the sake of [[ChivalrousPervert his "beloved parts", and those who have them]]. His idiocy is {{lampshade\|Hanging}}d a number of times in the series.

18	* Teppei from ''Anime/BtX'' is very much this trope for a good chunk of the series. He eventually grows out if it, but it's pretty hard to root for him sometimes because of his pigheadedness.
19	* ''Manga/BusoRenkin'': [[DownplayedTrope While he is not a total moron]], Kazuki Muto can be remarkably childish, naive, and overly trusting of his craftier adversaries. He also has a number of stupid moments throughout the series, such as twice forgetting his hand is injured when trying to shake someone's hand, and his BlatantLies excuse for his relationship to [[ActionGirlfriend Tokiko]].
20	* ''Manga/CardcaptorSakura'': {{Downplayed\|Trope}} with Sakura Kinomoto. She is far from a complete idiot, but she is ''quite'' scatterbrained and clueless nonetheless. However, she does manage to save the day in every episode using her own wits. {{Justified\|Trope}} in that she ''is'' only in [[KidHero grade school]].
21	* Teru of ''Manga/CastleTownDandelion'' has this in spades. His heart is ultimately in the right place and he has the [[SuperStrength appropriate]] RoyaltySuperpower to boot, but he suffers from a severe lack of common sense and what appears to be {{chuunibyou}} (justified by being an elementary schooler). In his introductory chapter, his kindergartner sister Shiori is more competent than he is, remembering to bring the bag, getting a dog to stop barking at them, and reminding Teru that he had left the shopping list in his pocket. The one point where he was actually useful was at the end of the errand, where he fended off a stray dog who wanted to attack Shiori for the groceries.
22	* ''Literature/ACertainMagicalIndex'' and ''Manga/ACertainScientificRailgun'': Gunha Sogiita [[GenreRefugee tries to be a stereotypical superhero in a series much more complicated than that]]. He constantly makes speeches on the power of ''[[HotBlooded guts]]'' when it is not appropriate, always [[LeeroyJenkins barrels his way through]], [[ApathyKilledTheCat never stops to ask what is going on, and is uninterested in mastering his powers]]. Of course, he's also [[AlmightyIdiot one of the strongest characters in the series]] (albeit on the low end of the high ranks). When he can headbutt missiles and basically just make up new powers whenever he faces a problem, it's understandable that he's not all that worried about tactics. [[SmarterThanYouLook He also demonstrates a surprising amount of scientific knowledge every once in a while]], implying that at least some of this is ObfuscatingStupidity.
23	* PlayedForLaughs and deconstructed with Denji from ''Manga/ChainsawMan''. His idiocy comes from a horrific childhood of isolation and poverty which has left him with NoSocialSkills, [[BookDumb illiterate]] and short-tempered. Despite this, he's [[SmarterThanYouLook shown to be quite clever and insightful]] when it comes down to it, with a RunningGag being him triumphing over opponents who are ''far'' more powerful (not to mention frequently smarter) than he is by either [[TooDumbToFool completely blowing past their attempts to deceive him]] or pulling out some insane plan that's so utterly ludicrous and impractical that no sane tactician [[WhoWouldBeStupidEnough would ever expect an opponent to try it]].
24	* ''Anime/CodeGeass'': PlayedForDrama and deconstructed with [[Characters/CodeGeassSuzakuKururugi Suzaku Kururugi]]. At the beginning of the series, he's a WideEyedIdealist AcePilot who wants to change the Britannian Empire to help the "Elevens" (that's Japanese people, by the way). Unfortunately for him, he's living in a world full of {{Manipulative\|Bastard}}, MagnificentBastard-ly [[WorldOfHam hams]], so he gets used by anyone and everyone [[UnwittingPawn for their own ends]], including to [[SpannerInTheWorks crash other peoples' plans]]. Since he's nowhere near as smart as the other people he's trying to deal with, he gets in the way of things that would really have furthered his goal faster, more effectively, and in some cases even with less bloodshed. And then the DiabolusExMachina [[FromBadToWorse hits]]...
25	* Touta Matsuda from ''Manga/DeathNote'' is a non-protagonist example. He is the most inexperienced member of the SPK, due to lacking in seriousness.
26	* Laios from ''Manga/DeliciousInDungeon'' is an odd mix of dependable and undependable, being rather idiotic when dealing with people and simultaneously being knowledgeable in dealing with monsters, but also admiring them, which causes issues. Later on he sobers up on the monster obsession (at least in combat) and works as a better leader and planner, but he still has his moments.
27	* ''Literature/DenpaTekiNaKanojo'': Juu is a victim of TheDulcineaEffect, tries to SaveTheVillain through StupidSacrifice, and is TooDumbToLive trying to help others... but those things inspire all those around him.
28	* [[Anime/DigimonAdventure Taichi]], [[Anime/DigimonAdventure02 Daisuke]], [[Anime/DigimonFrontier Takuya]], and [[Anime/DigimonDataSquad Masaru]] aka all the goggleheaded main characters. Of the Digimon Protagonists, only [[Anime/DigimonTamers Takato]] has been left out.
29	** Taichi and Daisuke, however, ''were'' more realistic than most examples of this trope, and [[CharacterDevelopment matured as the series progressed]]. They also seemed closer to their actual ages than most of the other kids: both are eleven in the beginning of ''Anime/DigimonAdventure'' and ''Anime/DigimonAdventure02''. The only reason they ever seem like {{Idiot Hero}}es is because the rest of the characters are [[WiseBeyondTheirYears startlingly mature for their ages]].
30	** The trend is subverted with Taiki of ''Anime/DigimonFusion'', who has the strategic prowess to back up his title of "General" of Xros Heart, and looks like Sun Tzu next to the other protagonists. His [[Anime/DigimonXrosWarsTheYoungHuntersWhoLeaptThroughTime successor Tagiru]], on the other hand, actually plays it straighter than any of his Idiot Hero predecessors.

32	* ''Manga/{{Doraemon}}'': Nobi Nobita could be considered the UrExample of this trope for modern anime. His father was athletic but book dumb, while his mother was frail but intelligent. Unfortunately he happened to inherit the worst traits from either parent, so he constantly gets left behind in both school work and physical activities. However, he has proven time and again that when he really wants to he can overcome his problems and really get things done.
33	* ''Manga/DragonBall'': Goku, the TropeCodifier for [[StockShonenHero modern shonen heroes]]. At the same time, he isn't a completely straight example of this trope since Goku is more naive and too trusting than outright dumb and does show a surprising amount of wisdom outside of fighting. It is hinted in ''Dragon Ball Minus'' that Goku's good heart came from his mother and not just from his head injury like most of his friends believe. There is also no real hint of Goku having brain damage given that he was raised in extreme isolation for most of his childhood which is why he is naive about the rest of the world and never really integrated into human society.
34	** Gotenks is what happens when you combine Goku's naivete with Vegeta's arrogance. He consistently fails to take his opponents seriously and is more concerned with looking cool than with finishing the fight efficiently. His foolishness ends up causing the deaths of a good chunk of the cast.

36	** Excel is both a female example and a parody. A parody in that, besides being the henchgirl of an EvilOverlord trying to take over the city and not that nice of a person, she is this trope.

In a semi-subversion, despite being a HotBlooded {{Determinator}}, prone to causing extreme collateral damage and social obliviousness (the reader is lead to believe that its because he was raised by a dragon), he's perfectly capable of fighting intelligently and wins through unorthodox use of his abilities at least as often as through sheer power (of course, most Shonen protagonists [[GeniusDitz are like this]]).
42	** Sting of Sabertooth turns into one after the Grand Magic Games.
43	%%* Al from ''Manga/FireEmblemChampionsSword''.
44	* Played with in ''Manga/FirePunch''. Agni, the main character, often comes across as rather dim for an adult. However, its generally justified as he's mentally a 14-year-old, considering he spent the past 8 years of his life set on fire in isolation due to being set on fire with special fire and having massive regenerative abilities. And on top of that, he notes that even though he has reached the point where he can tolerate being on fire all the time, it still hurts and makes it hard for his brain to focus on more complex thoughts. So he tries to leave the thinking to the companions he picks up along the way.
45	* Flint from ''Anime/FlintTheTimeDetective''. Being a paleolithic child blessed with super strength, there wasn't a whole lot he needed to know or think about. Problem is he's time traveled to eras where the problems are more complex.
46	* Tohru Honda from ''Manga/FruitsBasket'' is a downplayed example. While she's [[NaiveEverygirl naive]] and BookDumb, she's not an outright idiot, as her [[NiceGirl kindness and empathy]] makes her very well-versed on people's feelings and she can be quite insightful at times.
47	* A female example: Miaka Yuki from ''Manga/FushigiYuugi''... the quintessential NaiveEverygirl.
48	* As is Usagi's sci-fi counterpart, Yuna from ''VideoGame/GalaxyFrauleinYuna''.
49	* Domon Kasshu from ''[[Anime/MobileFighterGGundam G Gundam]]'' is HotBlooded and has NoSocialSkills. The results are, well, ''special''. His Lancer and The Kid of his group are also a bit idiotic sometimes, but not ''that'' bad. However, this is taken a step further in the 2010 manga retelling of the series. To give an example, in one episode he uses an AirVentPassageway to ambush a fellow Gundam Fighter's boxing opponent and take his place. In the manga version, he ends up in the opponent's room by accident, attempts (pitifully) to talk his way out of it, then beats him up in self-defense and decides to take his place on the spot.
50	* Hayate Kurogane of ''Manga/HayateXBlade'', who is repeatedly told so by her eventual fighting partner, Ayana Mudou.
51	* America from ''Webcomic/HetaliaAxisPowers'' is the poster boy--er, nation—for this trope. He's a BigEater who is loud (occasionally considered annoying by the other characters and/or fans) and comes up with plans like "building a giant superhero to stop global warming." He is repeatedly told to "read the atmosphere," upon which he looks for it in a bookstore. One of his favorite phrases is ''"Mochiron, hiiro sa!"'' which translates to "Obviously, I'm the hero!" It's even in his character song, "~WDC~ World Dancing". Another quote from the dub:
52	--> '''America''': Someone told me that my elevator doesn't go all the way to the top floor, but I don't even ''have'' an elevator!
53	* Set up and then averted by Issei in ''Literature/HighSchoolDXD''. Given his behavior in the first few episodes/chapters, you could be forgiven for thinking he was shaping up to be a textbook example. However, he quickly proves to be a fast learner, and completely aware of how far over his head the Devil world is, leading him to defer to Rias [[TheChampion long after he becomes able to look after himself]]. He never quite shakes the nickname "Power Idiot", but that's got more to do with [[UnskilledButStrong his fighting style]] than actual intelligence, and the fact that he easily gets distracted by hot women even during serious situations.
54	* Gon from ''Manga/HunterXHunter''. The only reason he probably hasn't died yet is because he comes up with creative ways to stay alive during a fight. He forgets things often, is easily fooled, rushes into things without considering the consequences, often even disregarding the consequences just to get what he wants.
55	* ''Manga/IkkiTousen'': Sonsaku Hakufu is a total idiot. She knows it herself, even though she hates being called stupid, which happens so often that she should actually be used to it. Her inner dragon makes her a very strong fighter, though, and like all other female warriors in the series she is [[MsFanservice hot]], which is a combination that definitely helps her to get more respect from her peers.
56	* ''Manga/JoJosBizarreAdventure'': While none of the characters are explicit idiots (in fact, several can be considered border-line geniuses considering what they do with their powers) there is one shining example: Okuyasu Nijimura from Part 4, who is so stupid Josuke defeats him literally by ducking[[note]]He accidentally teleported some nearby garden pots to his face.[[/note]] (and then has to save his ass when he follows Josuke into a house specifically stated to have a killer Stand in it just to give him respect). In fact, both Josuke and his own brother state that if Okuyasu wasn't such an idiot, he would be a very dangerous threat (what with the whole "[[PowerOfTheVoid Stand-erases-space-and-matter]]" thing).
57	** His unofficial catchphrase is "Shut up! I ain't that smart!" which probably says a lot. He manages to be TooDumbToFool at one point, where Akira attempts to deceive him in order to get a shot at assassinating a rather senile Very Old Joseph. However, Okuyasu is well aware he's a dim bulb, and so his solution when presented with an improbably easy case of SpotTheImposter is to ''punch people until he decks the correct target.'' Lucky for him, he gets it right on the first try.
58	* ''Manga/JoujuuSenjinMushibugyou'': Jinbee, although his relentlessly positive attitude even affects TheStoic swordsman who was ready to write him off as just another short-lived rookie.
59	* ''Literature/{{Kampfer}}'': Natsuru in the anime. [[GenderBender They]] were already dumb as a brick with special needs in the manga and light novel, but the anime turned them into a character thinking exclusively with their non-existent penis... ''while being ObliviousToLove''. Consequentially, they spend most of the series just sorta standing there with a dazed and confused expression, not even bothering to do much fighting or noting the ObviouslyEvil characters, or wondering what the smeg was going on with the secret magical girl war they were drafted into, or why the hot girls kept blushing around them and taking them out to eat... They are also a PinballProtagonist, doing absolutely nothing of relevance whatsoever other than obliviously make all the lesbians in the room damp.
60	* Yui Hirasawa from ''Manga/KOn'' is yet another female example. She is extremely air-headed and her younger sister is much more mature than her. She ends up buying a guitar that is too heavy for her, simply because it is cute and when she realises it is too heavy, she [[NeverMyFault genuinely blames the others for making her buy it]]. She has a tendency to forget everything thing else she knows when she learns something new, to the point of forgetting how to play guitar while preparing for a test. To her, maintenance of guitar initially meant dressing it up and sleeping with it. In TheMovie, when the band is planning an overseas trip, she insists they go to Europe, but when they decide they want to go to London, she is bummed, until it is pointed out to her that London is ''in Europe''. Note that she was a high school senior at that point. That said, she has shown time and time again that when she really applies herself, she can do anything, that includes learning to play the guitar, getting the highest score in a test and preparing for a talent show ''and'' passing a test simultaneously.
61	* While the titular character of ''Manga/TheLawOfUeki'' does have several brilliant insights, especially in battle, for the most part he seems rather simple-minded and clueless. On first meeting [[SnarkyNonHumanSidekick Tenko's]] gigantic dog-like form, he thinks it's just a really big ''chicken''.
62	* ''Franchise/LittleWitchAcademia'': Atsuko Kagari is clumsy, impulsive, and short-sighted. She's also an AllLovingHero who will do whatever it takes to help her friends, and is determined to become a great witch like her hero, Shiny Chariot. However, unlike other, similar characters, she ''doesn't'' have a lot of raw talent to make up for her inexperience; she's BookDumb and is lacking a lot of the basic skills for a witch. Her sheer determination is her only real asset when it comes to magic.

64	* ''Manga/MagicalRecordLyricalNanohaForce'': Touma Avenir is another naive example. Sure, he's not an idiot at all. But his naivete makes both Section 6 and Eclipse infectees so irritated. Especially the latter. Considering that his mentor and idol is Subaru Nakajima, herself not the brightest tool in the shed, it's obvious where Thoma's naiveté is coming from (Subaru, at least, has [[TheSmartGirl Teana]] to [[BokeAndTsukkomiRoutine set her straight]]).
65	* One of the older examples of an idiot hero is Kouji Kabuto from ''Anime/MazingerZ''. Excellent pilot, marvelous sniper, big ass {{Determinator}}, pretty good with motorcycles -- but his little brother, his girlfriend and his {{Gonk}} rival keep correcting and bitchslapping him (verbally and literally) for his lack of tact, sexism and big mouth. ''Nevertheless'', Kouji, unlike many similar hot-heads, may be exceptionally bright if he allows himself think things through. He is more of a GeniusDitz.
66	** His successor [[spoiler:and adoptive brother]] Tetsuya from ''Anime/GreatMazinger'' is another [[TheDeterminator determinator]] and he is slightly more mature and less sexist than Kouji, but some of the stunts he pulls due to his pride, hardheadness, jealousy, obsessivity and inability to listen to good advice are mind-baffling. And then you have how he can be a tactless jerk when he gets angry or upset, and it is no wonder how often he has been on the end of Jun's slapping.
67	** On the other hand, the remaining male main character of the Mazinger trilogy -- Duke Fleed from ''Anime/UFORoboGrendizer'' -- averts the trope. He can be somewhat rash sometimes, but usually he thinks before acting.
68	* Michiko from ''Anime/MichikoAndHatchin'' arguably qualifies. She tends to make quite questionable decisions while she [[SternChase runs away from the police]] and tries to find her old boyfriend -- her [[{{Stripperific}} flashy appearance]] not even being the stupidest. Fortunately, the girl she took with her, Hana, is actually quite a bit more intelligent. Unfortunately, Michiko never listens to her.
69	* Arika Yumemiya from ''Anime/MyOtome'', although in her case it's more a matter of being inexperienced with the world. She gains some confidence and competence as the series goes on, but while almost everyone else in ''Anime/MyOtomeZwei'' has become OlderAndWiser, Arika lapses back into Idiot Hero mode.

Despite the fact that he is recognized at the bottom of his class, Naruto was capable of sneaking into the home of his village's leader, a wise and skilled ninja, and stealing a forbidden scroll, and learning a forbidden technique written on said scroll. He is capable, or "learns through his body" as Kakashi puts it. On the other hand, he is practically incapable of learning the basic techniques early on that all of his classmates learn. At one point, [[SealedEvilInACan it is inferred that the Tailed Beast inside of him]] is disrupting his anatomy, resulting in at least a few of his academic failings. Regardless, as to his personality, Naruto is still an overly spirited and loud-mouthed individual throughout the first half of the series.
75	** In ''Shippuden'', he gets a bit better at making strategies, to the point where his own sensei was surprised at getting caught off-guard by him. Naruto's newfound tactics cause most of his acquaintances and allies to marvel at how he's grown. Sakura, however, berates him from holding onto a perverted technique and believes that he still hasn't really matured. Due to this particularly unhappy childhood, Naruto is also rather good at relating or identifying with people who grew up in similarly negative ways (Sasuke, Gaara, and [[BirdsOfAFeather Hinata]] being the most notable examples), so something in his brain is definitely churning. He's also darn good at ShutUpHannibal speeches.

Yes, he stopped the Lifemaker and CE twenty years ago... but he never even seemed to realize what their motivation was and had no plan to solve the problem they were attempting to address. Instead, the next generation is the one that has to solve the actual problem. [[spoiler:Just look back at Nagi's final beatdown of the Lifemaker after having read chapter 325.]]

His pushing himself too far results in his body giving out, and Ace dying to protect him]]. Many of the strategies he'd fallen back on in the past (such as using brute strength to win and never backing down) fail as he comes up against many opponents he cannot defeat, thus forcing him to either do things in a more intelligent way or get even stronger.

Luffy still has elements of an IdiotHero after the events in Impel Down and Marineford, but at least he now has quite a more realistic outlook on life, simply not storming into fights with opponents he obviously cannot defeat -- and not going into fights for no reason.
94	** He gets that from his Grandfather former Vice-Admiral Monkey D. Garp who also fits the qualifications to a horrifying degree such as throwing his Grandchild into a chasm, tying him to balloons, falling asleep suddenly, and he once traded a large amount of gold for doughnuts.

''father''. His TrueCompanions know he is dumb, but assumed this was just a metaphor. Then they learned that no, he really thinks that is logical. Even though Tamaki's hobby and job is '''entertaining women''', so he knows what romance is. He's the school King of romance.

To summarize: Ash was a total idiot when he started his journey, and then gradually matured over the course of the Original Series and Advanced Generation series. During the Diamond and Pearl series, he gets even better at Pokémon battling, but, as mentioned above, he gets less intelligent in all other regards. During the Best Wishes series, however, he hits the ResetButton very hard and actually becomes MORE of an idiot than when he started out. During the XY series, however, he regains his former maturity and intelligence with interest, and almost averts this trope completely. In Sun and Moon, he seems to hearken back to the Diamond and Pearl characterization of being amazing at Pokémon related matters, and dumb when it comes to everything else, however he's also more prone to AmusingInjuries.

WordOfGod states that in addition to his skill with the sword, he's got the innate talent to be a truly frightening sorcerer -- but he's too dumb to remember the necessary magic words.

A good example is when, believing that [[{{Determinator}} sheer bloody minded determination]] can make up for any deficiency in skills or knowledge, he surpassed the identification system of his hijacked mecha with fighting spirit alone and proceeded to absolutely trash it through careless piloting. Another character-defining moment is when he ''stabs'' his HumongousMecha with Simon's smaller drill-equipped mecha in an effort to {{combin\|ingMecha}}e them. If his universe didn't run on RuleOfCool, that would have been rather awkward, especially since the thing almost impaled his head. He has moments of intelligence -- namely, trusting Simon to sink the Dai-Gunzan -- but as a general rule, the only thing that keeps him from being killed with his idiocy is the fact that the universe agrees with his methods. [[spoiler:Even that doesn't last forever.]]

He needs bravado, because everybody else has lived underground for their '''whole''' lives and nothing will change if he doesn't act in this way. You can't expect him to know material he wasn't in school to learn. Kuwabara is probably a straighter example of this, as even when he did study, he got a 53. And it's implied that at least part of the reason for his never doing so stems from the fact his mother, Atsuko, is frankly a terribly negligent parent. She spends more time out drinking, sleeping off hangovers, or cursing him out in a drunken tirade than doing anything responsible, to the extent that Yusuke himself has very little respect for her. To be fair to her, she was a party girl who got pregnant with Yusuke at the age of '''14''' and was evidently abandoned by both the father and her family.
