Context Heartwarming / TheSpectacularSpiderMan

Go To

* A minor one in the first episode, but when Peter tries to ask Sally Avril out, unaware she's dating Rand, Rand immediately says, "It's cool" when Peter apologizes, clearly secure in his relationship (while Flash postures about what he'd do if Peter had asked out Liz).
* In "Survival of the Fittest", Spider-Man saves Norman Osborn from the Vulture (despite his clearly having brought it on himself) because he can't bear to see Harry lose his father.
-->'''Spider-Man:''' I can't let Harry lose his dad the way I lost Uncle Ben.
* In "Natural Selection", Peter dodges water balloons that Flash is throwing at him thanks to his Spider-Sense...then realizes he shouldn't jeopardize his secret identity and starts allowing the balloons to hit him. Right when Flash is about to throw another one, Gwen steps between the two to defend Peter (and also cuts Flash down with a wisecrack about his passing skills).
** Adding to it is Peter's co-worker's son, Randy, gets involved and puts his arms around Peter and Gwen and moves them along, making Flash unable to throw again.
* J. Jonah Jameson, of all people, gets one in "The Invisible Hand" when his office is attacked by The Rhino. When Rhino demands he tell him where Peter Parker is (wanting to use the photographer to find Spider-Man), Jameson notices Peter has just entered the Bugle. He immediately tells Rhino that he's never met Peter and he sends his Spidey pics by email, while motioning for Peter to run.
** Really, anything with Jonah and John Jameson, especially in "Catalysts". Jonah happily embraces his son when he enters the office with the biggest smile on his face, introducing him to all his coworkers excitedly before the pair go on a night on the town before John heads into space. When the pair are at Lincoln's party, John mentions that he was hoping for burgers and a night with his dad, Jonah immediately suggests they leave the place to hit a restaurant (before the two end up in the Green Goblins hostage situation). When John overpowers two of Goblins thugs and gets zapped by the Goblin, Jonah holds him and checks on him, making sure his son is alright before calling the Bugle to send Peter. When the pair flee the building and John realizes where Goblin's hidden one of his bombs, Jonah follows John back up the stairs when he goes to warn Spider-Man without a second thought, despite being exhausted. Jonah initially wants to name John as the hero of the day, but when John mentions they'll scrub the launch, he immediately switches tactics and (grudgingly) tells the Bugle to credit the save to Spider-Man so as not to deprive his son of the mission.
* A small moment in "Reaction". Even though they were never intended to be the show's AlphaCouple, the montage of Peter and Liz spending time together at Coney Island and developing feelings for one another is very cute (and makes Spider-Man's saving Liz minutes later all the better).
* In "Group Therapy", while Spider-Man and the Sinister Six battle, Aunt May (who is on the scene) has a heart attack. Jonah and the Bugle initially are very excited to hear about the fight, but when the Bugle learn that Peter's aunt was involved, Betty and Robbie both show worry and Jonah immediately becomes subdued and says that he'll call Peter and break the news to him gently, showing a side not seen before. (Of course, Peter thinks Jonah is calling to berate him for not getting photos, and so ignores it, thus being left unaware of his aunt's fate until Mary Jane tells him at the end of the episode).
* During the cold open of "Reaction", Peter webs a pair of civilians (a pretty girl and a more nerdy-looking guy) to a lamp post to pull them away from a robber's runaway car, calling back "You can thank me later, dude" as he leaves the two webbed together. The two are stuck hanging by their arms facing each other, [[MeetCute and blush and smile awkwardly at the unlikely circumstances]]. The same two extras are seen much later in the series, specifically the ValentinesDayEpisode, where the guy even proposes to her and she immediately says yes, embracing him happily. (Even Mary Jane, who was showing cynicism about the romantic aspect of Valentine's Day, admits it's "a little romantic.")
* Uncle Ben helping Peter defeat the Symbiote Suit in his mind, allowing him to rip it off in reality.
** The entire montage of Spidey saving people and talking to his friends too.
-->'''Symbiote:''' No one's denying the great work we've done. But how were we repaid? We have no, money, no girl, ''no real friends...'' none that is, save us.\
'''Peter:''' ''I beg to differ.''
** After finally overcoming the Symbiote, Peter takes off his mask and looks up to see [[SkyFace Ben smiling at him from above.]]
-->'''Peter''': Thanks, Uncle Ben.\
'''Ben''': Anytime, kiddo. [[AlwayswithYou I'm always here.]]
* During the last two minutes of the season 1 finale in "Nature vs. Nurture", when Gwen kisses Peter and we hear Eddie's voiceover, "We know who you love the most." Venom may have kidnapped Gwen, but Eddie proved he knew Peter more than even Peter himself realized.
** Also during that episode, Peter pretends to surrender to the Symbiote, but when it tries to merge with him again, it comes face to face with Peter ''and'' a manifestation of all the important people in his life as a defence against it -- with Gwen and Aunt May being the closest. The Symbiote didn't stand a chance.
--->'''Peter''': You're a disease. They're the cure.
** The episodes immediately following this one show Peter regularly looking for and worrying about Eddie. In spite of what he's done/become and no matter how many times he says he hates Peter, Spider-Man's not ready to give up on his friend.
** Also from this episode, Peter briefly thanking Flash for snapping him out of the symbiote's toxic mindset. It becomes even more so when the second season reveals that [[WeUsedToBeFriends the pair used to be friends when they were younger]].
--->'''Peter:''' Flash, you gave me a pretty hard time the other day.\
'''Flash:''' ''Just'' the other day? I must be slipping.\
'''Peter:''' [[SincerityMode Thanks for the reality check]].\
''({{Beat}}, Flash smiles)''\
'''Flash:''' [[JerkWithAHeartOfGold Don't mention it]]. ''(notices Peter's friends are coming)'' [[LetUsNeverSpeakofThisAgain And I mean not to anyone!]]
* The end of the second season's ChristmasEpisode, in which Peter gives Aunt May a framed photo of him, herself, and Uncle Ben.
--> '''Peter''': I just figured...it's our first Christmas without him. I wanted to find a way to...\
'''May''': He's here, Peter. [[CallBack He's always here.]]
** And in the same episode, Gwen thinks Peter has been crushed by the giant Christmas tree in Times Square (when he was off fighting the Sinister Six as Spider-Man) and when he resurfaces (with an obligatory lame excuse), she throws away all her frustration with him and throws her arms around him in one of the most adorable {{glomp}}s ever. [[AngerBornOfWorry Then, of course, she starts chewing him out]], but it's still adorable considering the state of their relationship at this point.
* Sandman of all people gets ''two'' in "First Steps":
** The first time is when he helps an adorable little girl create an elaborate sandcastle to stop her from being mocked by two {{Jerkass}} teens.
--->'''Little Girl:''' Mr. Sandman?\
'''Sandman:''' Yes?\
'''Little Girl:''' Thanks.\
'''Sandman:''' (''smiling'') Don’t mention it, kid. Now run along, it’s getting cold out.
** And then there's his HeroicSacrifice at the end-the fact that he seems to be OK afterwards doesn't change a thing.
--->'''Spider-Man''': You wanted a big score Marko? As far as I'm concerned, you just scored as big as a man can.
* In "Identity Crisis", after Spider-Man force-feeds Venom the gene cleanser that causes the Symbiote to peel away from Eddie and ooze down a drain into the sewer, he tries to comfort his former friend by telling him he's free of it and can let go of his hatred. Considering everything Eddie has said and done to him upon becoming Venom, it's touching to see Peter still try to reach out to him.
* A few moments in "Gangland":
** The man and woman we saw Spider-Man save/web together in "Reaction"? Not only have they become a couple in that time, but in this episode the man proposes to her. She says yes, and everyone cheers.
** In a HypocriticalHeartwarming sort of way. Octopus is webbed down and helpless after Spider-Man ripped out the power source for his arms. Throughout Spider-Man's fight with Tombstone, he watches anxiously. When Tombstone goes down, Octopus visibly relaxes and passes out. Tombstone had made it clear that he was out to kill Sable and Octopus, and hadn't done so earlier simply because of witnesses. Octopus, however, knows Spider-Man is an AllLovingHero, and thus he's safe from Tombstone when Spider-Man wins.
* In "Subtext", when Peter arrives on the scene at the end of the episode as Mark Allan is being taken away by the police, Liz accosts him by shouting, "Perfect! Take all the pictures you want!" His response? "That's not why I'm here." Then he hugs her and she breaks down in his arms. It seems Pete's learned his lesson about being considerate of others in those situations.
** Also, Mary Jane and Liz bonding as friends over their mutual pain over losing Mark.
* At the end of the "Shear Strength", Peter is pinned under a mountain of rubble as water begins to trickle in. He almost gives up -- then he sees Gwen lying unconscious nearby and has a burst of HeroicWillpower.
-->'''Peter''': Can't... budge... it... so cold... muscles stiff... no... This is it. I fought the good fight... did my best... foiled Doc's plan. No one can ask any more of me... ''(sees Gwen lying unconscious nearby)'' What am I doing? I can't give up, not with Gwen depending on me! ''(lifts the pile of debris off of him)''
** It might lean also into tearjerker territory because this implies if it wasn't for Gwen, he'd just let himself die. No one else to see him or miss him and not even a giant fight to go out on. The Webslinger might have silently died due to the ceiling caving in on him.
* "Probable Cause" gives AlphaBitch Sally Avril one with Peter. When Peter goes off to fight Shocker and the upgraded Enforcers, his camera is left behind and during the fight, the car he left it on blows up. Sally, thinking Peter is dead, shows shock and dismay, wondering what she will tell Liz. When Peter returns, playing it off, she hugs him and tells him that while she doesn't like him, [[EveryoneHasStandards she doesn't want him dead]]. Turns into funny moment after with her immediately demanding he never tell anyone about the hug.
* A small but effective one in "Gangland." Flash has been tripping over himself to avoid offending his Valentine's date Sha Shan, whom he has spent the season trying to win over. His clumsy efforts don't go unnoticed, and she reassures him sweetly after he asks her to dance, broken leg and all. His response is one of the smoothest lines in the entire series. After the rough season he's had, it's nice to see the QB get a legit win.
-->'''Sha Shan''': Flash, stop. You don't have to be afraid to open your mouth around me. I like you for who you are: an honest guy who stands up for what's right.\
'''Flash''': ''(smiles)'' Then dance with me, because honestly, I can't think of anything I'd rather do.
* At the end of "Opening Night", Black Cat is furious with Spider-Man for allowing her father to remain in jail and states that she'll never forgive him for it. Despite that, moments prior she saves him from being attacked and possibly killed in an ambush by the Green Goblin, suggesting that their relationship might not have been unsalvageable had the show continued.
* A rather twisted one in "Final Curtain". Circumstances aside, considering how seeing his son as a disappointment is a major character trait, it was kind of nice to hear Norman say he'd "never been prouder" of Harry.
* Remember how [[spoiler:Norman]] was quoting lines from ''Midsummer Night's Dream'' all through "Opening Night?" How did Norman learn all the lines? Well the answer is obvious, he was helping Harry practice his lines for the school play.
** It's entirely possible that [[spoiler:Norman already knew the lines, being a well-read man and all. That said, the lines Norman was reading coincided with the role that Harry had in the play, so take that as you will.]]
