Line #19 Heartwarming/SoulMusic


1	* Death and Susan both get one, when everything is over and Death asks, clearly expecting the answer to be "no", if she has a kiss for her granddad. Susan, DeadpanSnarker and borderline EmotionlessGirl realizes that being what he is makes him more alone than any creature in the universe, actually gives him one, just before going back to her school dormitory and finally letting herself cry over the loss of her parents, who died at the beginning of the book.
2	* Buddy goes out to play his big concert, but instead of his guitar, he opens with a song on his harp. Think if you were going to a Beatles concert expecting to hear rocking stuff like "Hard Day's Night", and they open with "Hey Jude". Just the way it's described makes me start to well up every time, and it's not easy to describe a song in a novel in the first place.
3	** Oh yesss, particularly Dibbler being disturbed by how the song made him consider things more important than money.
4	*** The line "things you couldn't buy and shouldn't sell" is what gets me every time.
5	** Particularly the line about how the song "took every man and woman and thing by the hand and showed him or her or it the way home."
6	** The AnimatedAdaptation makes this song a reality and it's every bit as beautiful as the book describes.
7	** Becomes even moreso nowadays, if you're re-reading the series after working through it all the way to ''Snuff'', and realize that this scene is an early precursor of Tears of the Mushroom's future performance, which won't just touch an audience, but free an ''entire race'' from ignominy and slow extinction. Soul music that doesn't fade, indeed...
8	** After the song, Imp admits this was the song he mentioned earlier as the one winning him the harp and asks Glod and Cliff how they liked it. Glod says it may not have been their usual Music with Rocks in, but it sure had hole in it. Cliff nods and it is noted they were surprised humans even knew how to write and make music with hole.
9	* Susan's swing (see the 'Funny' page.) Yes, it violated physics itself, but it was such a caring gesture.
10	* "She felt a little string in her heart go twang."
11	* Overlapping with TearJerker, Death's attempts to be a grandfather to Susan, despite having previously said in ''Literature/{{Mort}}'' that he wasn't cut out for it.
12	-->'''Albert:''' Normal girls don't get a My Little Binky set on their third birthday! Your dad took it away. The Master was very upset about that. He was ''trying''.
13	** In the animated adaptation, the story goes into flashback mode when Albert tells the story, and we actually get to see Susan as a little girl and how ''excited'' she is about her present; a stark contrast to her present-day deadpan attitude to everything.
14	** Meanwhile, in the book, even Albert's crust breaks a little when he remembers how when bathing little Susan, water got everywhere, and he could hear Death's laughter from down the corridor. How many times do we see that? How many times do we see Death uncomplicatedly ''happy?''
15	* At the Band With Rocks In outdoor concert, Ridcully sees Satchelmouth and Mr. Clete about to shoot Buddy. Even though he's been against Music With Rocks In from the beginning, the Archchancellor uses a bit of magic to jam their crossbow.
16	-->'''Ridcully:''' I'm just an old softy, that's my trouble. Hat. Hat. Hat.
17	** In the animated adaption, Susan hugs him and thanks him for helping out.
18	* Bit of Fridge Heartwarming: When Death arranges for The Band to survive, Imp winds up in Quirm cooking fish and chips for a hot-food shop. Not only does this place Imp in a position where Susan can find him again, but it's the same sort of work that Death himself was doing in ''Literature/{{Mort}}'', when he first felt what happiness was! He wanted to please Susan so much, he placed Imp in a job which he believed would make the young man happy too.
19	** The fact that Imp turns out to be a good cook makes it even more a [=MoH=], because it implies that he ''does'' enjoy his new job. Which means Death finally found a way to fix a human dilemma that ''worked''.
20	** Or Death could just be a fan of Music/KirstyMaccoll [[note]] [[http://youtu.be/DL2GmaI3Xus There's a guy works down the chip shop - I'd swear he's Elvish]]
21	** Many years later, the ''Mrs. Bradshaw's'' rail travel guide mentions that the fish-and-chip shop is still serving excellent food, prepared by a young man who's implied to be Imp's ''son''. Happy enough to settle down, apparently!
22	* When Imp first arrives in Ankh-Morpork he accidentally says "I hate rocks" (meaning a druid's stone circle rather than the FantasticSlur against trolls) in front of Cliff the troll... who calmly analyses the context, realises that [[InnocentlyInsensitive no offence was meant]], and amiably explains to Imp that what he just said is a serious insult that'll get him killed if he says it in front of most trolls in the city. Considering how most trolls in the series (even generally good ones like Sergeant Detritus) tend to be quite eager for a fight if someone gives them any reason at all (and there was already some suspicion that Imp might be vaguely elvish), it's a clear sign of just what a NiceGuy Cliff is.
23	** Also, seen how nervously-embarrassed Cliff gets when he realizes how a lady troll in the audience is looking at him, having followed The Band from city to city. Awww....
24	* The scene where Glod and Cliff present Buddy with his rebuilt harp, and how, in his emotion, Imp's Welsh-expy FunetikAksent returns in his next few lines (recounting the harp's story) and is even stronger than it used to be.
