Context Heartwarming / Roseanne

Go To

* The Season 3 episode "The Wedding," when Crystal marries Dan's father, Ed. Dan has been vehemently opposed to their relationship the whole time. At the last possible minute, as Roseanne walks down the aisle alone (as Matron of Honour), Dan--who's not speaking to anyone, including Roseanne--runs up and joins her. The look on Ed's face is gold.
* The entire episode of Darlene's wedding but especially Mark and David's conversation about their parents as Mark ties his tie:
-->'''Mark:''' Will you just shut up about them already? Man, they never did anything for us. They kicked me out of the house when I was sixteen, and they treated you like a dog. The Conners are your parents now, ok? You and me both. They saved our asses.
-->'''David:''' Well, Mom and Dad gave us life, ok? Maybe one of us a little more than the other, but still.
-->'''Mark:''' Hey, hey, hey. It's a slap in the face to the Conners for you to be hung up on a couple of jerks who haven't even bothered to call in the last four years.
** Made better a moment later. As Mark gives David the above advice, he's tying his tie for him.
--->'''David:''' Hey, where'd you learn to tie a tie?
--->'''Mark:''' Dad. It's the only thing he ever taught me, and now I've taught you. If that's all he could do for you today, you don't need him anymore.
* "It's a Boy," the episode where David moves in with the Conners. They spend the entire episode telling David that he can't live with them. They go over to apologize to David's mother, since they thought she came up with the idea, which she didn't (Darlene and David cooked up the whole scheme in an attempt to stay together when David was supposed to move). When they mention it, she flies into a rage, including calling David a worthless little bastard ''to his face''. The empty look on his face is heartbreaking. Roseanne had already shredded her previously in one of her glorious beatdowns, but hearing that was enough for her to simply say:
-->'''Roseanne:''' All right, I'm changing my mind. David, you can come live with us if you want to.
** This episode has another moment that is also tearjerking at the same time. When Roseanne tells Dan about what she's done, he's upset, especially because they originally agreed not to let David move in. But when Roseanne tells him that David's house is the kind ''she'' grew up in, he quietly says "That bad?" and leans back, sighing as he accepts that he can't let David live that way. It's a beautiful moment of these two caring about another person that much, but makes you sad (having seen what David's mother is like) that Dan understands immediately how bad things are, without Roseanne having to give any further explanation.
*** During that same conversation, the ''first thing'' Roseanne says is that she normally wouldn't make this kind of decision without Dan's input and support. For all of the jokes about Roseanne being the real head of the household, it proves that their marriage is truly an equal one, and that she does respect Dan as much as he respects her.
* Darlene is playing the role of the cynic up to eleven in the Disney World episodes...until she meets Franchise/WinnieThePooh and melts into a puddle of fangirl gushing about how he was the first book she ever read and he's always been her favorite.
* At the end of the series, [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fDRIzYxYyLc everyone visiting]] Darlene and David's baby, Harris. David sums everything up in the most wonderful way.
-->'''David''': Hey. Had a lot of visitors today, didn't you? I hope nobody frightened you, because they all love you very much. There's a lot of love here, in this house. You might hear some yelling or some-some naughty words, but... sometimes the love is so strong that they can't contain it.
** During the visits, we also find out that Becky and Mark are expecting. Mark asks when to let everyone know, and Becky says to put the news off for a little while, so that Darlene and David can have their moment in the sun. Later, after everyone else has left, Mark comes back to play with Harris by himself.
--->'''Mark''': Oh, man... this dad thing is going to be great.
* In the first episode of the series, Roseanne and Dan are fighting over whether or not Roseanne has all of the responsibility around the house (and Dan is trying to prove he has plenty of capability for domestic tasks by making dinner). Suddenly, Darlene gets a bad cut on her finger, and the two drop the fight and whisk her away into the kitchen. Dan holds Darlene's finger over her head and bandages the wound, while Roseanne comforts the very freaked-out Darlene by reminding her of the fun time they all had at the demolition derby. When the wound is treated and Darlene runs merrily on her way, Roseanne and Dan exchange a look, and Roseanne asks Dan if he's hungry and starts preparing dinner. They each came to the realization that, while they each have different strengths, they work extremely well as a team.
* Two Christmas episodes involving Darlene:
** In "Santa Claus", from season 4, Roseanne finds out Darlene's "friend" Karen is actually an older woman who runs a bookshop. Not only that, but Darlene acts with Karen like the "good" daughter Roseanne wants to have (Darlene helps around the store, has nice manners, and helps with Karen's young son Sammy), and even has even showed Karen stuff that she's written, which she never does with Roseanne; naturally, Darlene and Roseanne have a fight about this. Near the end of the episode, when Darlene comes home, without saying a word, she pins a story she's written on the refrigerator.
--->'''Roseanne:''' I guess I do get a Christmas bonus after all.
** The following season's Christmas episode, "It's No Place Like Home For the Holidays", all of the Conners are separated from each other due to a blizzard; Dan and DJ are at home with Nancy and Marla, Becky (not seen) is at a hotel with Mark, Roseanne, Jackie, Bev and Nana Mary are at the diner, and Darlene's at David's house. Darlene and David get in a fight because he wants to and she's not ready, and the only reason she doesn't go home is because of the blizzard. Then David's mother gets home, and after seeing how his mother treats him, Darlene makes up with him. Not only that, but when she gets home the next morning, Darlene shocks everybody by kissing Roseanne on the cheek.
--->'''Roseanne:''' [[BrickJoke See, Mom, I told you there's a God.]]
* Another Christmas moment: in "Santa Claus," Roseanne is playing Santa at the mall, and naturally listens to kids tell her what they want for Christmas. One overbearing mother tries to tell her little girl exactly what to ask for, especially regarding a pair of ballet slippers, as she apparently plans for the child to become a ballerina. Roseanne asks the mom to leave them alone, then quietly asks the little girl what ''she'' wants to be when she grows up, and even offers to find her a toy that will help her follow her dream instead of doing what her mother says. For a woman who outright states her hatred of her own children, Roseanne can be [[JerkWithAHeartOfGold pretty sweet]].
* In [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Il8jV6r-tk "War and Peace,"]] Darlene is the person who has to post Dan's bail after he's arrested for giving Fisher a (well-deserved) beatdown for hitting Jackie. While this is mostly a Crowning Moment of Funny on Darlene's part (she spends the scene dropping sarcastic comments and jokes), she does eventually get serious and tell Dan that his giving Fisher what he had coming to him was a cool thing for him to do.
* In "Lovers' Lane," a Season One episode, Roseanne and Dan find out that Becky has a crush on Chip, a boy at the bowling alley. They have a lot of fun teasing her by claiming that they're going to be as embarrassing as possible when they meet him. When Roseanne does go to the snack bar where Chip works, though, she ends up being nice, letting him keep her change, and pretending that she doesn't know Becky (though she does wink at her just to give her a scare). Chip comments that Roseanne is "pretty cool"; Becky realizes he's right, smiles, and agrees.
* DJ actually gets one in "Maybe Baby." There is a chance that something is medically wrong with Roseanne's unborn baby, and after DJ finds out, he tells her he'll support her no matter what her decision is, which is what she had been desperate to hear from someone for the entire episode.
* In "D-I-V-O-R-C-E," Roseanne asks Dan multiple times to take her dancing when they go on their date but Dan turns her down each time. On their date they run into an old friend who has recently gotten divorced because she and her husband realized they both wanted different things out of life. This causes Roseanne and especially Dan to think about what that means for the future of their marriage. So finally, after Roseanne assures Dan that she's not going anywhere anytime soon, Dan quietly asks if she wants to dance.
* Despite the fact that they only barely get along at this point, Roseanne immediately defends Leon when she thinks that the man administering the lie detector test is trying to get him fired because he's gay. She was wrong, but it's the thought that counts.
* In one episode, everyone makes a video for Roseanne's unborn baby. Becky and Darlene are mostly making of fun of the situation...until Becky comes across a letter that Roseanne wrote to Dan on the eve of their wedding. The girls are genuinely touched by the sentiment expressed in it, and drop the snarking to read it to their unborn sibling.
* In the Season Five premiere, Becky is preparing to move away with Mark. Darlene comes in to say goodbye, and the two sisters share some words of mutual love. Despite all their differences, they really do care about each other.
** A similar--but much funnier--sentiment appears in an episode where the two sit in the Lanford Lunch Box one night and get bombed on a bottle of peppermint Schnapps. They naturally tease each other, but they also express some hidden feelings, such as Darlene admitting that she thinks Mark is "gorgeous." When Becky [[LampshadeHanging points out]] that they rarely act this way around each other, Darlene jokes that Roseanne should have let them get drunk years ago.
** In the Season Two episode "One For the Road", Becky talks Roseanne into letting her stay in the house alone with a friend for the entire day and impulsively prepares a couple of tornadoes just to impress her classmate, leading to the two getting hammered on liquor. Darlene comes home from basketball and is horrified at her sister's recklessness, but instead of ratting Becky out actually covers up the entire incident to avoid a scene. When she becomes sick from a hangover, Darlene tosses in the occasional crack at her older sister's foolishness, but actually does her best to make Becky comfortable and admits that seeing Becky like this frightened her. It isn't until the friend's mother comes over to confront the Conners about the incident that Becky is found out by her parents, and despite her earlier attitude Becky has the decency not to pin the incident on her younger sister.
* Dan and Roseanne's marriage was largely built around sarcastic quips and teasing, so any moment where they [[AwLookTheyReallyDoLoveEachOther affirmed their love]] was always sweet. Of particular note are episodes that are centered on their wedding anniversaries:
** In "The Monday Thru Friday Show," Dan and Roseanne are at odds about where to spend their fifteenth wedding anniversary, and it looks like they won't be able to come up with a solution. Then Jackie arrives and, in one of her earliest examples of being a CoolAunt, announces that she's arranged to take the kids away to a nearby amusement park for the whole weekend so the two can have the ultimate gift: some stress-free time in their own house. The kids are thrilled at the miniature holiday, while Dan and Roseanne are genuinely grateful to Jackie and have a wonderful few days.
** In a later anniversary episode, Jackie suggests that Roseanne have some professional boudoir photos taken as a gift for Dan. Not only is Dan absolutely ''thrilled'' to receive them (proving that he loves everything about his wife), but Jackie also contributes by buying Roseanne a spectacular red dress as a present of her own. Roseanne, who'd been making fun of the selections at the photography studio, is sincerely impressed by the outfit and thanks Jackie for it without any snark.
** One anniversary episode sees Dan taking an extra job at a "big and tall" men's shop at the mall so he can get Roseanne's wedding ring remodeled with an inscription and gems representing each of their children. It's a major expense, but Roseanne is touched by the gesture and thanks Dan by bringing him a romantic picnic lunch that they share on his lunch break.
* In "Nightmare on Oak Street," Darlene has her first period, and Roseanne does away with her usual snarking to have a sincere, heartfelt discussion about it. What's particularly moving is that Roseanne tries her best to be encouraging about the situation, saying that Darlene now gets to be a part of "the whole cycle of things...it's kind of magical." When Darlene gripes that nothing good can possibly come out of getting a period, Roseanne immediately responds that she can think of three good things... their names are Becky, D.J., and Darlene.
* While Roseanne is away looking after their dad for three days, Jackie steps up to run the Conner household. Dan is very grateful and actually spends the majority of the episode getting along spectacularly with Jackie. At one point Jackie reveals that, as a teenager, she actually had a crush on Dan. She asks him if he remembers the first time he met her but Dan denies it up and down. Then, just as Jackie is leaving for the night, Dan reveals that he remembers the exact moment he first saw her, right down to the sweater she was wearing and who she was talking to. Jackie leaves understandably touched by the revelation.
* The announcement that the revival would {{retcon}} the series' bittersweet/downer ending. Dan's perfectly fine.
* The first episode of the {{Revival}}, "Twenty Years to Life": Roseanne is a Trump supporter while Jackie supported Clinton. The two have not been on speaking terms since the election. Darlene is determined to get them to talk and reconcile, and at the end, she ultimately succeeds.
* Mary's mother is Geena, the black girl DJ didn't want to kiss in the school play. Looks like things worked out fine.
* "Dress to Impress": Despite not understanding their grandson Mark's penchant for wearing more feminine clothing, Roseanne and Dan accept and love him all the same and make it clear they will not tolerate anyone bullying him for expressing himself.
