Unfortunately, a misunderstanding occurs later in the episode that shakes their opinion of Sawako, but this is resolved in episode 6 as detailed below.

The two are just happy to spend quality time together, and they celebrate Sawako's birthday by cozying up at the kotatsu in Kazehaya's room and getting out his birthday gift for her which is a ring. In the end, the two fall asleep next to each other at the kotatsu.

When he finds out she actually did pass, he clinks their mugs to share a toast.

Pin of course rejects her, but in a sensible and kind manner; he eats the chocolates despite not liking sweets, reminds her he's too old for her, and reassures her that she's a kind and hard-working person and should feel proud of herself. Ayane is naturally heartbroken but is still thankful for all the kind things her teacher did for her the past year.
