* A striking example from the normally cynical and dark ''TabletopGame/Warhammer40000'' universe can be found in "In Remembrance", an epilogue to the book ''Necropolis'', detailing a civilian artist's visit to the shattered ruin of Vervunhive and meeting several of the Ghosts in preparation for a memorial for the hive. It's tough to pick out a single moment, but the closest might be Milo, after being asked why he and the rest of the Ghosts willingly go through hell and worse, simply replies:
--> ''"Can't say I ever thought about that before. We go where we're told to go, do what we're told to do. We're Imperial Guard."''
** In many ways, Vervunhive itself was a Crowning Moment of Heartwarming for the Ghosts. Many of the Tanith members resented Gaunt for fleeing their homeworld when it came under attack on the day of their founding, even if the more reasonable among them acknowledged they couldn't hope to win. And while Vervunhive had to be abandoned, the Tanith Ghosts were finally able to make a stand against Chaos and save the civilians. And many of the survivors would become Ghosts themselves, forever joining the regiment that didn't abandon them in their hour of need.
* In ''Necropolis'' Gaunt takes over a chapel as a temporary command post following the destruction of the main command center. He expects the priests to complain that his actions are blasphemous but the senior priest instead says that Gaunt's actions defending the hive are as much a form of worship as his own prayers and that he is welcome to use the chapel. Gaunt is touched by this and asks the priests to remain and pray for the Emperor's protection.
-->'''Gaunt:''' I suppose you're going to tell me this is an act of sacrilege.
-->'''High Ecclesiarch Immaculus:''' You fight for the Imperial cause, my son. In such manner, you worship the Emperor more truly than a hundred of my prayers. If our baptistry suits your needs, you are welcome to it. Baptise this war in blood, colonel-commissar.
-->'''Gaunt:''' ''*quietly moved*'' I will feel happier if you and your brothers would hold vigil here for us, watching over this place as a surety against destruction.
* ''Ghostmaker'': Dorden, the medic, discovered that the Volpone Bluebloods had abandoned wounded sixty-odd men. The Ghosts can't evacuate them either, but Dorden refuses to leave them. Gaunt lets ten volunteers stay; Dorden gets nine troopers and Corbec, the regiment's colonel. He tends the injured, the volunteers hold off the enemy, and in a lull, Corbec explains why he knew Dorden would stay and why he stayed himself: years ago, as a young medic, Dorden had charged out into night to deliver a woman in a difficult labor. She would have [[DeathByChildbirth died]] without him. The boy, being [[HeroicBastard illegitimate]], went by his father's name, not hers, which is why Dorden had not recognized it. Dorden is so moved that he has to make a joke about how old it makes him feel, to know he delivered Corbec.
* ''Only In Death'': "Gaunt's alive! He's fething well alive!"
* Another one for ''Only In Death'': Rawne and Larkin sharing a drink in Gaunt’s old office. Although they’ve never been particularly close, they’ve been through a lot together since being tent neighbours on Tanith Magna. Larkin’s reminiscing, Rawne’s genuinely fond smile, and the traditional Tanith toast they share is almost enough to make you forget they’re in a monumentally bad situation.
* During the short story ''Iron Star'' Major Rawne has possibly the biggest 'D'awww' moment of the entire series, with Gaunt hallucinating that the Major was the one to bring him back to the land of the living, telling all those who get in his path to 'feth off'. In reality? Rawne was sitting by his side during the surgery.
* In ''Traitor General'' Rawne managing to, despite his ruthless nature, to resist Chaos Then going on to save Ana Curth from falling into the ruinous powers sway in a touching and uncharacteristically compassionate moment.
* In ''The Armour of Contempt'', when Kexie who is DrillSergeantNasty to the point of sadism finally admits that the characters assigned to him for training are "proper bloody Guardsmen."
* It's a small moment, but there's a scene in ''Necropolis'' when one of the Vervunhivers thanks the Tanith for fighting for their city. To a serviceman, a simple "thank you" makes all the difference in the world.
** During the initial Zoican invasion in ''Necropolis'', Tona Criid picks up abandoned babies, later raising them as her own even after she entered Imperial Guard, despite being just a former hive ganger at the time.
* A minor one, but there's something quite heartwarming about the loyalty of Gaunt's childhood friend, Blenner. In the first book, despite being drunk and having no idea what Ibram Gaunt has gotten caught up in, he walks into an abandoned hab-block and kills a stormtrooper without pause. For all he knows, Gaunt is being attacked under official orders... but Blenner doesn't care: his friend is in danger, and that's all that matters.
** Much later, when Blenner comes back into the series, he continues to prove his utter loyalty to Ibram and show just how nice of a Commissar he is. In ''Salvation's Reach'',When Felyx Chass, Gaunt's son is sitting dejectedly in a Tauros vehicle, clearly wanting to prove himself to Gaunt but being stuck in the reserve detachment, Blenner orders the reserve to the front lines to support the advance, and give him a way to prove himself to Gaunt. Gaunt is initially pissed at him for it, but later admits to himself that it did help break the ice between them.
* The Saint arc has one happen to Gaunt. Not only does he get to see the resting place of Sabbat herself, but he also gets to fight alongside the reborn Saint and fulfill a vow made to the late Warmaster Slaydo in the process.
* Any scene with Daur and Elodie.
* In ''Straight Silver'', Rawne has a male-equivalent moment for DefrostingTheIceQueen with Banda. Not only did he first ''order her not to die'' while he had already taken a gutshot himself, but later, he's pushing her wheelchair into the comparatively fresh outside air, which is a ''massive'' change for Rawne, considering that his usual most defining trait is being TheStarscream with a dash of {{Jerkass}}.
* In ''Salvation's Reach'', the White Scars Space Marine Sar Af is talking to Gaunt about Dorden, who is dying yet unafraid:
--> Gaunt found Sar Af talking to Dorden. The old medicae looked especially fragile beside the vast Space Marine in his heavy boarding armour
--> 'He is dying,' said Sar Af to Gaunt, as though this was news and come up in conversation.
--> 'I know,' said Gaunt.
--> 'But he is not afraid,' said Sar Af.
--> 'I'm not,' said Dorden.
--> The White Scar nodded sagely.
--> He looked at Gaunt.
--> "[[BadassCreed And they shall know no fear]]," he said.
** This is a quote from ''the Emperor'', which in its original context was about [[SuperSoldier the Astartes]]. Sar Af is explicitly comparing Dorden to the Space Marines. It's hard to imagine a greater compliment for a member of the Adeptus Astartes to give a normal human, particularly given that the Space Marines had all but ignored a Lord General Militant earlier.
* Even though they're loyal soldiers of the Blood Pact, and as such, irredeemably evil bastards, there's something oddly touching about the interactions between the members of Baltasar Eyl's philia in ''Blood Pact''. They're as closely knit as any platoon in the Tanith First and Only, and Eyl mourns every one of his men who dies.
* It's mentioned in one of the earlier novels that the men in the Ghosts like to chat about which of the women they find to be most attractive. It's mentioned that they commonly list off the regiment's most skilled snipers and, when they're feeling particularly daring, [[HospitalHottie Curth.]] However, it's mentioned that Criid is never brought up. Not because she's not considered to be attractive, [[OfficialCouple but because she's taken.]] Caffran, her lover, isn't the type to beat people up for that kind of thing, either, so it isn't the fear of his anger. It's just simple respect for their relationship.
* Dalin and Felyx's little heart-to-heart in ''The Warmaster'', bonding over having imperfect parents.
* Bonin reuniting with Mkoll and Milo after all of them going through hell at the end of ''Anarch'' is so stoic and understated and true to their characters which makes it even more heartwarming than if they hugged; as it brings a ray of hope that the regiment will keep on going being the badasses and comrades they always were. And especially shows just how much Bonin knew the Chief would be returning to them.
* Varl and Mabbon have several heartwarming moments despite the fact that one is a loyal Imperial Guardsman and the other is an Archenemy defector and quasi-daemonic entity.
** In the short story "You Never Know," Mabbon has been scratching marks on the wall of his cell to measure time; he has no rights, self-determination, liberty or comfort, he's not even allowed to know where he's being kept, but he knows that his guards search him every six hours and he's been counting so he'll at least know the passage of time. Varl apologises for having to erase Mabbon's count and tells him to just ask what time it is.
---> '''Varl:''' "Sorry."
---> '''Mabbon:''' "Thank you."
---> '''Varl:''' "For what?"
---> '''Mabbon:''' "Sorry is the most human thing anyone has said to me in a very long time."
** Mabbon has spent enough time around Varl to pick up on his vernacular, even making fun of it. They also tend to answer each other's questions with "you never know."
** When the Inquisition takes Mabbon into custody, Varl asks them to let Mabbon keep the books and pamphlets he enjoys reading. When the interrogator tells him Mabbon won't have time to read because he'll be too busy being tortured, Varl is visibly upset. As he's being led away, Mabbon looks back at Varl and nods at him to thank him for his concern. He also tells Varl to take care of himself.
** Mabbon later saves Varl's life twice, despite having sworn an oath of SuicidalPacifism.
---> '''Mabbon:''' "I don't care about my life any more. But you were always decent to me, Sergeant Varl. Fair. One of the very few who were."
* ''The Warmaster'': There's been one constant throughout the series; Rawne's hatred of Gaunt. The two never become anything like friends, but over time they reach an understanding of each other. When Gaunt returns to the regiment after learning of his promotion, he tries to not make a big deal of it, but Rawne notices the new rank pins on his jacket. And how does Rawne, who once said he'd put a knife in Gaunt's back the moment he knew he could get away with it, respond? He's ''overjoyed'', pulling Gaunt into a man-hug (and getting a bunch of hellgun barrels in his face from Gaunt's new bodyguards for it) and congratulating him, knowing that Gaunt is going to do as right as he can by the Ghosts with his new position.
