Hey, who says a show about mass killings can’t have heartwarming moments?

Entries for the Japanese live-action film series go [[Heartwarming/DeathNoteSeries here]].
----
[[AC:Light/L Arc]]
* [[PetTheDog Light takes a break from his busy schedule to help Sayu with her homework.]]
** ...and doing her chores for her too! [[AffablyEvil Such a great brother]]!
** Even to the very end of the series, it is implied that Sayu is the one and only person that Light absolutely will ''refuse'' to kill or let be harmed under any circumstances.
* Ryuk eats an apple right out of Light’s hand.
** Many of Light and Ryuk's interactions are oddly sweet- [[VillainsOutShopping like when watching wrestling matches or playing]] VideoGame/MarioKart together.
** Likewise, Rem and Misa's relationship is even sweeter than Light and Ryuk's. Rem wants to keep Misa safe no matter what the cost.
* Watari giving ice cream to Matsuda, Soichiro and Aizawa while they're investigating the recordings of Raye Penbers's death.
* Gelus' sacrifice to save Misa from a StalkerWithACrush. And Misa clearly seems grateful and touched by it when Rem tells, as she hugs her Death Note to her chest.
* L suggests to a post-heart attack Soichiro and visiting Light that based on Light's profile of Kira, Light's sister Sayu fits the bill. This leads to two heartwarming reactions in one:
** Whether or not it's an act, Light goes BigBrotherInstinct and [[invoked]]DudeNotFunny, telling L not to say such a thing in front of a sick man. It's hard to tell if it is an act since Sayu is Light's MoralityPet.
** Soichiro in the meantime [[ActuallyPrettyFunny laughs at L's suggestion]]. He says Sayu is the type to try to kill someone, only to then freak out and not do it again.
* Episode 11, when the entire police force shows up to help Soichiro out of Sakura TV safely. Also a SugarWiki/MomentOfAwesome.
* It's a tiny moment, but the police mention with frustration that a lot of people have called claiming they were Kira, with some being attention-seekers and others being worried they are a jinx. During one phone call in the manga, a person calls and says with regret that they wished the criminals that died would be killed, and [[IWishedYouWereDead is worried it was their fault]]. The officer, while visibly irritated, stays patient and asks if they also wished for the FBI agents to die. After a {{Beat}}, the caller says no, they didn't even know about that. The cop reassures them they aren't Kira, but to call if they are still worried in a few weeks. Light claims people need his form of justice, but that single moment of kindness from the cop to a scared person believing they were evil proved him wrong.

[[AC:Yotsuba Arc]]
* During the Yotsuba arc while Light is deep in thought (also doubles as a SugarWiki/{{Funny Moment|s}}):
-->'''L:''' [[HoYay You’ve been staring at me for the last five minutes.]] Let me guess, it's because I’m the only one eating cake, right? Here.
* Misa giving L a peck on the cheek.
** L's reaction is even more heartwarming. He begins to consider falling in love with Misa and she responds with just being good friends, he's just as happy.
* Light, Misa and L dancing together in a circle. Aww!
* Everything about Light during the Yotsuba arc... [[spoiler: which makes his return to his evil self that much more heartbreaking]].
* The part from episode 23 where [[spoiler: Higuchi is caught]] is pretty heartwarming, as by this time, all but six of the police had quit because they were afraid of Kira, one quit because he was suspicious of L, [[spoiler: one was killed]], and [[spoiler: one quit because he was not happy with L testing his resolve to stay]]. Light appears surprised at the police's cooperation, and then he and L jointly realize that [[spoiler: the police were led in this action by the two who most recently quit, who subsequently return to the task force.]]
** It's brief, but in the manga, when that scene cuts to [[spoiler:Aizawa and Ide]], they mention how excited they were to learn from the Sakura TV broadcast that the supposedly dead Matsuda was still alive. They evidently had seen his death announcement in the newspaper, but because they'd already left the task force, they would have had no idea it was fake. With Matsuda being the ButtMonkey of the series — rarely noticed or appreciated, usually yelled at or scolded when he is noticed, and even subjected to SnubByOmission treatment — it's very sweet to see someone express sincere concern for his well-being. And all the more sweet that it comes from [[spoiler:Aizawa]], who got frustrated with him and yelled at him more than anyone else did.
* In episode 25 of the anime, Misa in her Gothic Lolita outfit, walking and singing that song.
** Misa's trust in Light in general is really very touching.
* Aizawa's moment with his wife and daughter in the park after [[spoiler:he quits the task force]].
* The scene in the Yotsuba arc where Misa sits in Light's lap is really sweet.
* An odd example, but during the scene at Mido's house, Shimura essentially says that he plans to rally the other five surviving non-Kira Yotsuba members into overthrowing Kira. The other members repeatedly look down on him, dismiss his suspicions, and at least a few of them have displaying no qualms with murdering their competitors and even their own coworkers; it's a bit sweet that he has enough faith in their humanity to believe that they'll ultimately side with him (albeit only if he can get Mido and Namikawa on his side first).
* The conversation between Light and L on the roof and the subsequent [[BigLippedAlligatorMoment slightly awkward foot-massage scene]] are oddly [[TearJerker/DeathNote sad]] and heartwarming simply because out of context, it seems like L and Light should be best friends - [[spoiler: too bad Light's about to kill L.]]
** "I feel you are the first friend I've ever had." L calls Light his friend, reaching out to another human being for what's probably the first time in his life. For a while it even seems like Light is reconsidering trying to kill L, then quickly becomes a {{Tearjerker}} when we see that he still wants to.
** WordOfGod is that L was lying in the manga/anime, but in ''L:Change the World'', it is revealed [[spoiler: that in that universe, L did truly think of Light as a friend and is seen mourning him, since L outlives Light in this AlternateContinuity.]]

[[AC:Near/Mello Arc]]
* Episode 26: [[spoiler: Light ''[[AntagonistInMourning misses]]'' Ryuzaki. He's ''lonely'' without him around.]]
** Light wobbles a little there, but quickly puts himself back on track. It's clearer in the manga. And it's part of the tragedy - he and L could, perhaps, be friends; it's just that nothing like that could ever compare to [[UtopiaJustifiesTheMeans Light's crusade]]. Not to mention [[WorthyOpponent his abiding need to beat L right into the grave]].
** It's worth mentioning that his missing Ryuzaki is probably a little bit of VictoryIsBoring coming into play too. Ryuzaki was the only one who had truly challenged him on an intellectual level. Part of Light was probably missing the game.
* Episode 27: When Roger suggests Mello and Near working together, Mello is disgusted, but Near says without sarcasm "Alright. Sounds good." As calculated as he is, he's willing to try to get along with Mello and cooperate.
* When Mello threatens Soichiro that if he doesn't tell him who the new L they set up is he'll kill Sayu, both Soichiro and Light are torn on what to do, as if he names Light then Mello might kill Light immediately, and if he doesn't Sayu will die. Matsuda, overhearing the conversation, lunges over Light's shoulder and types into the computer that Light is using to silently instruct Soichiro that he should tell Mello that ''Matsuda'' is the new L, but is just a figurehead [[SelfDeprecation because he's completely useless]]. Matsuda both once again shows that he would die for his friends, and is accepting enough of his own weaknesses that he's just happy to let himself be used however he can. Rather than actually ''call'' him useless like Matsuda typed, Soichiro just calls him a figurehead.
* Late in the series, Soichiro tells his wife that he'll let her divorce him due to the trouble his involvement in the Kira case has brought the Yagami family. She is shocked and refuses, saying that she'll always stand by him, no matter how bad things get. He slumps in relief and thanks her. Seriously, who wouldn't want a love interest that was ''that'' devoted?
* The final conversation between L and Soichiro Yagami in the Last Name. L told Soichiro that the latter is a good father to him.
* [[spoiler:During Soichiro Yagami's]] death, Ryuk sounds surprisingly somber, even noting that he died happy knowing [[spoiler:his son isn't Kira (even though he is, but still)]]. Makes it seem like, among all the interesting humans he met, the guy was one that Ryuk would miss the most.
** Also the fact that Light was ''genuinely upset'' by [[spoiler: Soichiro dying]] beyond just being unable to kill Mello. Naturally crosses into Tear Jerker, but it's clear that Light still had some humanity within in. [[spoiler: Sadly, Soichiro's death and his fate afterwards also means that said humanity has just died.]]
* The scene where [[spoiler:Near asks Rester to escort him to Japan, because he's never boarded a plane alone before]].
* Lil' Mikami. "Thank you, Teru!" D'awww.
* As messed up as Mikami is, the scene on the train is kinda sweet. He seemed to be the only one to notice a group of boys picking on another kid and was willing to step in.
* Perhaps this a strange moment to like, but there was something oddly heartwarming about one part of 'Ridicule', which takes place at Christmas. The task force are still slaving away to catch Kira, Misa's getting drunk and depressed, [[spoiler: the 'three Kiras']] are committing more acts of mass murder, and there's very little goodwill anywhere. But at the same time, Near is celebrating the holiday the way it's supposed to celebrated - playing with his toys (admittedly, he does that anyway) and hanging baubles on a Christmas tree.
* Misa's not ''quite'' as severe of a {{Yandere}} without her Kira memories, and in the anime after making her drunken crack at Takada that she'd be executed if it was proven she's helping Kira, Misa actually looks concerned when it looks like it badly upset Takada. The moment doesn't last since it turns out Takada is actually amused and resumes acting condescending toward Misa, but it was a nice flash of common decency on Misa's part.
* Near giving Mello his props, admitting that he wouldn't have been able to corner Kira if [[spoiler: Mello hadn't kidnapped Takada and forced Mikami to expose the location of the real notebook]]. By focusing on remotely analyzing information and recklessly engaging with suspects to force information out, respectively, neither Near nor Mello could have closed the case on their own. Near only received the information he needed to win because of Mello's approach, and Mello's plan only benefited anyone because Near remained. Had the two of them actually put their heads together as Roger suggested, it might have gone better for both of them, but either way, Near acknowledges that Mello played a vital role in the victory.
-->...But I always knew that I would never be able to surpass L. It could be that I lacked the action and he lacked the calm... and even though we couldn't surpass the one we admired on our own... Together, we can stand with L. Together, we can surpass L.
* The task force going out to look for Light [[spoiler:after he flees the Yellow Box Warehouse]], especially since they defy Near to do it.
* Unrelated to Light and L, but... in chapter 108, Near not only is calling all the survivors up again to keep working together, but if you look closely, there's that one shot of him playing as usual... [[spoiler: and he's eating a bar of chocolate, just like Mello used to [[note]]Okay, you find a way to phrase that which doesn't make it clear that Mello dies[[/note]].]]
* When Matsuda [[spoiler:shoots Light, his ShutUpHannibal involves him calling out Light for hurting Soichiro. It says something that Soichiro's subordinate had more respect for the chief than his ''son'']].
* Ide being sympathetic to Matsuda as well as listening to his theories about the events of the Yellow Box Warehouse, and that he cared about Light in the epilogue. He also doesn't think Matsuda is twisted at all by being sympathetic to Light[=/=]Kira, but manages to convince Matsuda they made the right choice because it meant they're still alive.

[[AC:Other]]
* In ''Relight 2'', L pays a secret visit to the Wammy Orphans. He even tells them what he's most afraid of.
* Rem's song from the Death Note musical, [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HYSJUoBI8C0 "When Love Comes"]] (also a TearJerker given the context). Seriously, it sounds like a song that would be in the credits of a movie. Try and introduce the song to someone who likes that genre of songs, doesn't know about the musical, and ''then'' tell them where it's from.
** Sayu's song, [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VRY5ET8r6KY We All Need a Hero]], also qualifies. Heartwarming? Definitely. TearJerker given the context? Oh yes. Something that would surprise you to be in a musical about ''Death Note''? Yes, but dang it, it's just so sweet.
