[[folder:Clones]]
* Why is Ganondorf, one of the most powerful and unique villains in the series, nothing more than a Captain Falcon clone in Smash Bros.? If they needed a slower Captain Falcon that badly, they should've used Black Shadow or something. For that matter, why is Wolf suddenly so much more feral?
** Ganondorf was a clone in Melee because he wasn't originally going to be in the game and was only put in once they decided to make clones. He's still a clone in Brawl for a variety of reasons -- Ganondorf was staying, but they didn't have anyone to give the moveset to (another F-Zero character clearly wasn't in the plans) and didn't want to openly taunt Ganondorf fans from Melee by including the character and not the moveset, so...
** We've never really seen Wolf fight outside his ship (aside from in Assault's multiplayer mode, but he had a huge arsenal at his disposal there).
** Black Shadow died in GX, killed by Deathborn, who also died. No F-Zero characters available. Not a good excuse, since Melee fans should be happy to have one less clone, but it's an excuse.
*** F-Zero takes place in a comic book universe, so unless Black Shadow is Uncle Ben, he's coming back.
** Er, so? Since when has the original series' status quo mattered that much in SSB?
*** Exactly. Note the presence of Ganondorf.
*** Ganondorf's the kind of character who just doesn't stay dead. (Except for after ''The Wind Waker'', but that's one of two timelines, and the Ganondorf in Brawl comes from ''Twilight Princess'', which follows the "Child Link" timeline, where ''The Wind Waker'' follows the "Adult Link" timeline.)
** On a related note, why did they make Toon Link almost exactly like Young Link (and by proxy, Adult Link?) "Wind Waker" had a lot of items and moves that could have been used instead of the sword spin, boomerang, bow, etc.. To say nothing of the huge assortment of other equipment Link has had throughout the series.
*** Simple: Toon Link ran out of [[{{Mana}} Magic Power]]. That renders most of his equipment that he's not already using useless.
*** [[SarcasmMode Explains why he can't use the Skull Hammer then...]]
*** It couldn't implement the Skull Hammer in his moveset due to time?
*** In [=SSB4=], Toon Link is still a clone. Hopefully we can get the Skull Hammer and Deku Leaf in DLC.
*** There's also the idea that all Links in Zelda use the same basic equipment? Boomerang, Arrows, Bombs, even the spin attack is not unique to just one Link. Also keep in mind that Toon Link isn't just representing Wind Waker, but also Phantom Hourglass and Spirit Tracks, both of which do not have items from the Wind Waker to begin with, so giving Toon Link weapons exclusive to just one game in the series would be pretty jarring in hindsight.
* Why was Dark Pit made into a Pit clone? There was plenty of opportunity for him to use his staff in his normal attacks and not just his Final Smash, especially considering he originates from a game Sakurai himself worked on. He even has his staff in his win pose and official render!
** [[spoiler:[[StealthPun Maybe that's the idea?]] Dark Pit technically IS a clone in his own game of origin, after all.]]
** Dark Pit was probably a similar situation to Lucina, planned as an alternate costume, but made into a separate character last minute.
*** Sakurai was fond of Uprising, which is why many elements of that game come back in Smash Bros.
* I get that she's a clone, but why doesn't Lucina at least have her crit portrait from ''Awakening'' when using her Final Smash?
** Maybe due to technicalities? At least the use of a PreAssKickingOneLiner prior to the crit carried over.
[[/folder]]
[[folder:Palette Swaps]]
* Where are these recolored Pokémon coming from? Pikachu and Jigglypuff have been around since the original, and they have never been recolored; their alternate colors come from various adorable accessories. But what about Mewtwo, Lucario, and the trainer's choices? Why do they have so many alternate palettes? It can't be shininess; Mewtwo is the only one with his shiny color as an option. Is it because people can't recognize Pikachu if he isn't yellow? Do they not want to give Charizard a blue bandanna?
** Well, in Stadium 1, they could get different colors from what nickname they have...
** The reddish Pikachu is a shiny Pikachu with Red's original hat on. Some of the Pokémon are in shiny form too, and all of Red's costumes come from different game characters.
** RuleOfCute covers Pikachu and Jiggs, at least.
** Can anyone explain ''why'' the shiny variations of Lucario, Squirtle, Ivysaur, and Charizard are absent, since Pikachu's, Jigglypuff's, and Mewtwo's are present?
*** Time constraints.
** All characters except for one has 8 alternate costumes each in Smash 4. A few even have actual costumes. They had plenty of time to work on them, and yet Charizard and Lucario STILL don't have their current shiny alts?!
** The Smash Bros. staff aren't as knowledgeable on Pokémon as they are on most of Nintendo's other franchises. Observe how Melee's Pokémon Trophy descriptions are taken almost word-for-word from the Pokédex, for instance, and how it had no Pokémon stages related to the games at all. It wasn't until the fourth game that they've caught up on their Pokémon information. Of course, I am myself wondering why the shiny versions of some of the characters don't exist. I can see why for Charizard though: He'd look too close in scheme to the Mega Charizard X form.
* Why doesn't Samus ever use her yellow basic power suit as an alt, but she has retained her green costume that was never in her own games?
[[/folder]]
[[folder:Trophy Descriptions]]
* Why do most of the trophies in the series tend to give the player false information regarding the source material? (Bonker's description says it can give Kirby the Hammer and Smash abilites, when he can only give out the Hammer ability, the Dark Suit description claims the suit is obtained in the Dark Torvus temple, when it is actually found in the Dark Agon temple, Shadow's works say he debuted in Sonic Heroes, but he really first appeared in Sonic Adventure 2, etc.)
[[/folder]]
[[folder:Violence (or lack of)]]
* How can Link's sword just bash people around instead of gruesomely cutting them instead? A sword is not a blunt weapon! This also applies to all the other sword users and the light saber as well (unless, of course, that's actually a fluorescent lamp on a handle... ''yeah'').
** They're ''trophies''. They're not made of flesh; they're stronger stuff than that. And there's a chance that the swords are made of the same material. Thus, swords hit them and knock them away.
*** Ah, now ''that's'' a good explanation! Thanks a lot, that makes much more sense now.
** As to the swords: They ''are'' blunt, you wouldn't want to give a kid a bunch of toys with razor-edged swords, and even if they were sharp enough to rip into a kid's hand, the edge of the blade would increase in bluntness as the size of the characters decreased. With regards to the lightsabers, that's just proof that SSB's framing device takes place [[{{WesternAnimation/Futurama}} 1000 years in the future]]. Or the kid has Franchise/StarWars toys, which usually go for a translucent plastic blade that looks kind of glowy when brightly lit.
** Slapstick cartoon violence. Same reason Grand Theft Auto couldn't get away with slamming an 8-year-old with a baseball bat, but these games do.
*** If I recall, Brawl was originally going to let characters show damage taken as time went on, like Meta Knight's mask getting a scar and Captain Falcon's visor cracking. I suppose they had to cut that to avoid going over the edge in injuries.
*** As of Smash Ultimate this mechanic now exists, at least for Olimar.
** Link's sword often just sends enemies aback without inflicting any visible damage in his own games too.
*** Except in the most recent games where he can do a finishing blow to kill enemies.
** There's literally no reason to question this. [[MST3KMantra Seriously, it's a freaking game, it doesn't have to be realistic!]] And frankly, [[WebAnimation/DeathBattle I've had enough of Pokemon getting brutally mutilated as it is,]] thank you very much! Games in general aren't realistic about violence, ESPECIALLY Nintendo games! Seriously, why do so many people ask this question?!
[[/folder]]
[[folder:Stages]]
* If Mushroomy Kingdom is supposed to be an AbandonedPlayground version of World 1-1 and World 1-2 from [[VideoGame/SuperMarioBros1 Super Mario Bros.]], then why does 75m from VideoGame/DonkeyKong (which is ''older'' than SMB) look like new?
** Because they're two different, unrelated stages? Just because one looks old doesn't mean another should.
** ''Unrelated?'' Might I remind you that Mario made his first appearance in Donkey Kong.
*** So? You're missing the point. Mushroomy Kingdom and 75m are not from the same series, not from the same game, and within Smash Bros. are just not linked. There isn't continuity between them. You might as well ask why the Zelda or Metroid stages don't look old, they're from games just as old as SMB. Or you could ask why the characters don't look 20 years older than they do.
** Because Mushroomy Kingdom is an abandoned playground version of World 1-1 and 1-2. 75M is an Eight bit looking replica in a polygon using game. Different gimmicks.
* One of the houses in Onett has a smoking chimney, indicating that someone there needs it for warmth. But if that's the case, why is it a bright and sunny day?
** Cold front.
** Cooking? Forging?
*** RuleOfCool.
* Why do the cars in Onett hurt you if they're on the road and you're not?
** Maybe they sideswipe you? (and have a pretty big hitbox too)
* Why is Yellow Devil the boss hazard for ''Mega Man 2'''s Wily Castle instead of Mecha Dragon?
** Probably because Yellow Devil is one of most memorable ([[RecurringBoss and most recurring]]) boss in the franchise and with ''Mega Man 2's'' Wily Castle being the most memorable of them all, they decided to put those two together.
* In Reset Bomb Forest, what's the reasoning behind the area turning back to normal?
** Either Pit stopped the bomb, or it's a circulating stage like Castle Siege.
* Why does the Jungle Japes stage, from ''Donkey Kong 64'', instead use elements from ''Donkey Kong Country'' and ''Donkey Kong Country 3''? It looks nothing like the original Jungle Japes level.
[[/folder]]
[[folder:Character Moves and Taunts]]
* Why doesn't Ganondorf use his sword? Y'know, the one that he pulls out in his taunt? Yeah. THAT one. Yeah, it makes for a decent joke on the dojo, but Sakurai, I would have much preferred it if you just let him use the freaking sword!
** Maybe it was a tier thing. They already have three sword users, one of which (Ike) is rather slow and heavy, so Ganondorf would be, as some say, "an Ike spoof" or vice-versa. Then again, it might simply be for consistency matters: he didn't use it in Melee either... And yes, I'd like to see Ganondorf using a sword. And actually ''turning into'' Ganon as Final Smash, by the way.
*** Er, what? He does turn into Ganon. For a OneHitKill, I might add.
*** If he hits you. Anybody [[strike:with decent jumping skills]] 'cept Bowser and Ganondorf can dodge it. There's a reason that he's currently bottom tier.
*** Except that Final Smashes play no part in the tier list due to being available from items.
*** Maybe he means doing it Giga Bowser style. Or turning into [=OoT=] Ganon.
*** Uh, [=OoT=] Ganon was bipedal and used swords, he turns into the quadruped version from Twilight Princess.
*** I always saw it as he's bragging that he doesn't even need his swords, cause, you know... he doesn't!
** Ganondorf was originally going to use the sword as part of his new moveset but they couldn't program it in due to time constraints (He was one of the last characters announced as playable). They had the sword rendered, but didn't want to delay the game again for the sake of a single character. Toon Link still has no excuse.
** They've made one of Ganondorf's customization options in 4 to replace his Warlock Punch with a sword stab. Headscratcher averted.
*** Even more averted now that Ganondorf is confirmed to use his sword for his smash attacks in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
* If Mario can turn giant any time he wants, why doesn't he just stay like that and kick all asses!? It's a menacing taunt but an empty threat.
** That would be unfair to the other fighters.
** Without a Super Mushroom on hand, it takes all of his power to manage such a transformation by himself. He can't even move or lift his arms while doing it. Thus, its only purpose is to intimidate or impress. "Hey, you're that plumber guy who can become really big!"
*** It's just an old school taunt... if you notice, when he does that taunt, he stands -exactly- how he does in Super Mario Bros: head sideways, etc. Apparently, he can move while he does this too. Look closely in Melee and you'll notice his arms and fists shift slightly; in Brawl, it's the same, but he bends his knees slightly, too.
*** It's reminding everyone except Mr. G&W and DK that he's been doing this since their series were in diapers. That he's old, and he can still kick their butts.
*** Technically speaking, it was Cranky Kong in the original Donkey Kong, and he's DK grandfather, so DK doesn't count.
*** DK Jr is still really really old. Like 1982 old.
* How does anyone see Game And Watch? He's clearly depicted as a 2D character, so shouldn't he appear as a nearly invisible straight line to all the fighters?
** If he's two dimensional, he would be seen from the same angle regardless of where you were standing.
*** Which indeed seems to be the case in the Subspace Emissary.
** If you look at his trophy, you will see that those grey outlines around him have depth. Of course, the characters are still fighting just a grey line, but it's better than nothing.
*** His ingame model doesn't have the depth on the grey line, and neither does his Octopus trophy.
** I'm a little confused how some of the attacks connect, especially with Link, who has attacks that are PERFECT vertical slashes. Oh, and how do they manage to grab him?
*** [[{{MST3KMantra}} It's a game.]]
** Yeah, he's 2D, but (almost) everyone else has 2 eyes and depth perception--they're looking at him head-on, but not one-dimensionally so. They can see part of his flat side from each eye. It's not a question of if they can see him, but more of if they can interpret correctly just what is coming at them...
* When did Fox, Falco, and Captain Falcon get fire powers?
** RuleOfCool?
** They adapted them from their own ship technology.
** Fox and Falco are wearing Slippy's custom made human rocket boosters. Captain Falcon learned fiery combat moves from an alien from another race as a reward during his bounty-hunting days. Wolf has no excuse.
** I heard that Fire Fox and Fox Illusion come from a legend about Kitsunes creating illusions and doing some sort of... something with fire. Falco... still just does it.
*** Wolf had no excuse for being able to kick into the air. That is, unless he had some sort of weird air compression boosters or something. But that would just be ''silly''.
*** Look on Wolf's back. He's wearing the jetpack from ''Assault''.
*** You realize everyone can double jump already, right?
** I always assumed it was a pun on [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Foxfire_(bioluminescence) foxfire]] (not to be confused with Firefox). Falco has it because he's a clone. I don't know why Captain Falcon has it.
*** Because his hands and feet move so fast they set on fire? Just throwing that out there.
*** It's because it's Captain Falcon. You don't argue with the goddamn Falcon.
*** And Falcon's moveset apparently originated from when the game was in alpha and wasn't going to have Nintendo characters in it.
* How come Captain Falcon never uses his pistol in any Smash Bros. game (which would make for a more sourceful Neutral B), but Ganondorf, Snake, Bayonetta, and Joker get to use their weapons?
* As someone who rather frequently plays oldschool platformers, I find it very strange that Mario, Luigi, and Sonic don't seem to have any attacks capable of knocking people out of the arena by stomping on their heads or performing a spin attack. Even worse, Mario and Luigi have attacks that hurt the enemy by jumping ''up'' towards them. Try doing that to a goomba in the original Super Mario Brothers.
** Everybody in ''Brawl'' can do a footstool jump, if that counts.
*** Not really, considering it does no daamge except to Goombas and Koopas in Subspace Emisary.
*** What about their down aerials? Luigi's is a stomp, and Mario's was until Brawl. Also, some of Sonic's spin moves are KO worthy. His up and down smashes come to mind.
*** Simple explanation. Smash Bros debuted when Super Mario 64 came out, so they're going to focus on moves from that rather than Super Mario Bros. The same thing with Sonic, only it's a last ditch attempt to make Next-Gen look like a decent game by putting in Silver and Blaze trophies.
* How come Lucas and Ness can't use their signature moves? Why can't they use PK Rockin and PK Love?
** Lucas's Smash-A-UP move IS PK LOVE. D: He even uses PK LOVE as a victory pose.
** Isn't he pulling one of the needles from Mother 3 in that victory pose though?
** Also, PK Rockin' has a different Japanese name (PK {{Kiai}}), in case you were wondering), which could cause complications in voice acting should they have chosen to make Ness [[CallingYourAttacks call his attack.]] And it could be a bit difficult to reduce Rockin' to something that didn't cover the whole screen (though they obviously did that with Lucas, as mentioned.
*** Also, how exactly would PK Kiai work? All I can think of is a Final Smash that involves Ness floating into the air and then [[TeleportSpam warping around erratically]], either building up power for a massive unavoidable attack (but not being invulnerable during this charging state, so that opponents can "avoid" the attack by hitting him enough to stop him from using it) or tracing damaging lines behind him that linger on the stage (thus creating a steadily-growing weblike hazard) before finally having the lines fly off the screen, pushing anybody caught between the lines and the screen's edge to a KO unless they dodged or got out of the way. (Then again, my original PK Rockin' idea was a bunch of steaks falling from the sky, which... is not a kiai. At all.)
*** PK Rockin' could work if it was the Gamma variant. The play field gets covered in a grid of psychokinetic bombs that stunlock opponents who don't dodge when they go off, and once all the bombs explode, they're followed by a powerful full screen explosion that, while tricky to dodge, can still be.
* So, Mega Man's Mega Buster is revealed to be (oddly) his standard A attacks. So, is it a projectile or just a straight up standard move? Can they be reflected? I'm just confused because no projectiles up to this point were standard A attacks, they were special moves.
** Sakurai stated that the sliding and the Mega Upper are the only "punches or kicks" he uses, so I guess it's considered as a projectile.
* When Mario got his TornadoMove swapped out for the FLUDD, why didn't Luigi get his replaced with the Poltergust? I can forgive it in Brawl, but UsefulNotes/WiiU / 3DS replaces the Negative Zone with the Poltergust, meaning that Luigi not only stays out of balance with Mario, he looses a very unique Final Smash as well!
** They probably wanted Luigi out of balance with Mario in the first place to Luigify him more. (Luigification used to be the name for the trope, right? I forget it's new name... >_>;) Also... maybe they didn't know what they could do with the Poltergust moveset-wise that would be unique? I mean, it sucks things up and Kirby and Dedede already have that covered... You could also explain it by saying that since it was the Year of Luigi when this game was being made he doesn't have the Negative feelings from being in Mario's shadow and so, no Negative Zone. (I'm going to miss that attack too. ; _ ;)
** In "4", Luigi shows off his non-cowardice by taking a vacuum and sucking everyone up, expelling them shortly afterward.
* Ike, the Hero of Blue Flames, has orange flames in Brawl and 4. Why?
** Oversight?
** Because people commonly associate [[FireIsRed fire with the color orange]]?
** Lucina and Robin's trailer shows that Ike's fire is now blue. Headscratcher averted.
* Why is it that when Dr. Mario's Mega-vitamins deal damage when he uses his Standard Special, but when he throws one on the air for his taunt, it does nothing?
** Obviously he's not throwing it hard enough.
** Corrected in his LimitBreak, where he spawns a flurry of 8-bit vitamins
* When I see 1-on-1 matches via Spectator, why is taunting so rare? You don't see them taunting even after the opponent's last stock has been depleted and they're standing on solid ground.
** It's much harder to move your thumb from the circle pad to the taunt buttons on the 3ds. Previous games had the button easier to reach.
* Why does female Robin reference Kjelle of all characters when KO'd, rather than using her ''own'' death lines from ''Awakening''?
** It might have just been a randomly chosen sentence, and the fact that it's something Kjelle said was just a coincidence. It wouldn't be the first time Smash was weird about Fire Emblem character's dialogue, anyway.
* Where is Little Mac's Star Punch? It's the most famous move in his own series!
** It's now his KO punch. It's one-star when an opponent just got KO'd, two-star when they have little damage, and full strength when they are badly damaged.
* How is it that characters like [[VideoGame/FZero Captain Falcon]], VideoGame/DuckHunt, [[Franchise/StarFox Fox, Falco]], [[VideoGame/PunchOut Little Mac]], [[VideoGame/AnimalCrossing Villager]], and [[VideoGame/WiiFit Wii Fit Trainer]] can wall-jump despite being from games that lack platforming?
** The same reason they can fight and jump and use weapons despite being from games that lack those things.
* So why is it that taunts like Luigi's kick, Greninja's hand fountains, and Snake's box inflict damage yet Bowser biting furiously, Toon Link flailing his sword around, or any taunt where a character appears to be charging an attack do no damage?
* So now that Simon Belmont is a playable fighter in ''Super Smash Bros Ultimate'', he uses holy water as an attack. This would make sense for certain characters like Bayonetta or Ganondorf, but what about other characters like Palutena? Villager? Mario?
** Maybe it works in a "it doesn't matter whether you sinned once or a hundred times" case? Lots of characters could or have done bad things, no matter how mild.
** That still raises some questions about holy water working against the likes of [[OurAngelsAreDifferent Pit]] and [[PhysicalGod Palutena]], who are supposed to be holy beings themselves ([[JerkassGods in theory]]). Not to mention, it's ''holy water'', which is an ''actual thing'' in Catholicism and Orthodox Christianity, and ''[[ArtisticLicenseReligion isn't supposed to work like that]]''. It's just H₂O that has been blessed by a priest and is regularly used by Catholics and Orthodox Christians for purification rituals, which include ''washing one's own hands and face'' with it. The only reason holy water should burn on contact is if you were actually either demonic, undead, or otherwise an abomination in the eyes of God. So just attribute it to GameplayAndStorySegregation.
* Why does Lucas have access to the Rope Snake? In [[VideoGame/Mother3 his game]], only ''Duster'' ever used the Snake.
* How is Shulk able to damage the human fighters with the Monado? In his own game, Shulk states that "The Monado can't cut people."
* Olimar's Final Smash involves him boarding his ship and flying away while the opponents get attacked by the Pikmin enemies just like in his home series whenever the day ends. Why can't the opponents fight back? Similarly, Olimar doesn't take the Pikmin with him so how do they survive?
* Why does the Falcon Dive go ''up?''
[[/folder]]
[[folder:Items]]
* Why do items (Home Run Bat, Fan, Capsule, Beam Sword, etc.) always stand up, going against the laws of physics?
** In the days where 8 and 16 bits rule and 32 and 3d were just a dream, items stand up for identification (I'd like to imagine how players of Donkey Kong will know the works of that Hammer if it looks like it's lying down). SSB just runs at this rule for nostalgic reason.
** [[AWizardDidIt The same magic that allows big items to fit inside tiny capsules places them upright]].
*** So they'd be easier to find from a huge stage.
* Smoke ball smoke comes in white, [[color:yellow:yellow]], [[color:orange:orange]], [[color:red:red]], [[color:purple:purple]], and [[color:blue:blue]], with every color in between. Why no green, brown, black, or gray smoke, or dark/light shades? Most notably, ''they left out '''green'''''.
** Green gas usually indicates that said gas is [[DeadlyGas toxic]].
*** So are [[PoisonousPerson White Pikmin]]. What's your point?
*** Even though said objective of game is to hurt your opponents, the problem with toxic is what?
*** Since the smoke ball is not a damaging item, the indication of toxic gas would simply be misleading. Just a case of ColorCodedForYourConvenience.
* Why, why, why, why is Goldeen useless? ''Magikarp'' is the useless Pokémon who just splashes around... and Goldeen is actually quite powerful? Especially if you, say, ''drop it in the water''?
** But there's no fighting in the water in Smash Bros. The only levels which have water are either too shallow or you can barely stay there, plus throwing the Pokéball in water doesn't work. The joke is derived from the anime, where Goldeen was the prime example of why not to use a fish Pokémon on land.
** It's an in joke from the show. One eps Misty used a Pokéball that had a Goldeen in there and the Goldeen splashed around like it does in Smash Bros, because it was on land.
*** And it should have been a Magikarp then, too.
** The game has been intentionally programmed with several features (like tripping over in Brawl) to effectively keep the game relaxed and silly and not all about huge ''Street Fighter'' combos, as said by WordOfGod (thus meaning anyone can enjoy it). Having a joke Poke-summon is just part of this.
*** Unfortunately, [[{{StopHavingFunGuys}} not all people are into the silly stuff...]]
* Why can you dodge a Gooey Bomb explosion by sidestepping or roll dodging? You should not be able to avoid damage from AN EXPLOSIVE STUCK TO YOUR GODDAMN FACE by sidestepping!
** Gameplay factor. You're not in the same "dimension" as the bomb. Therefore, it has no effect.
*** It runs on the same logic as '''[[VideoGame/TheLegendOfZeldaMajorasMask using a shield to block an exploding mask]]'''.
** When you dodge, you're in a temporary invincibility frame. That goes for bombs too.
* So a POW Block can damage all of your opponents on the ground and launch them straight up, even [=KOing=] at high percentages. So how is it that it also makes ''you'' [[TremorTrampoline bounce slightly off of the ground]], yet you remain unscathed? When an enemy uses it, it's painful to your character, but when you use it, all your character feels is a slight bump. Furthermore, how can it not damage your allies in team battles either?
** You know its coming can can prepare yourself for it. The other guys don't and take damage and get launched.
* How does Snorlax increase in size in such a short amount of time?
* Why is the ''Poison'' Mushroom colored almost the same as a ''Super'' Mushroom? The Mario games usually gave it a purple cap, or sometimes green. Shouldn't the Smash games give it that color instead?
** That would make it too easy to identify the mushrooms.
[[/folder]]
[[folder:Master Hand and Crazy Hand]]
* What the hell is up with Master Hand? All the other characters are quite sensible fighters, but Master Hand is this giant... floating... hand with weird attacks, and has HP instead of damage percentage. What's going on?
** It's clear from the opening cinemas that the entire ''Smash Bros'' franchise is just some kid playing with his toys. Master Hand is the kid.
** They seem to be moving away from this, as Brawl is identified as "a world where trophies fight", but yes, the original game even had the characters being pulled out of a toy box and placed on a table with random items that were arranged to resemble a stage.
*** Technically, the trophies are those little collectible figurines, so they are still basically toys if you look at it.
** Isn't the idea that this level represents a set of toys attacking (and crippling - note the HP) a child's hand [NightmareFuel worse than a weird boss fight]]?
*** I guess that explains the... discomforting music that plays after you beat him in [=SSB64=].
*** Not really, as I think the whole thing was supposed to be the kid(s) playing. If you've ever seen a young kid playing with only one toy, often his hand will become the opponent (although usually the hand wins.)
*** Absolutely. Who here can honestly say they didn't attack their toys, overpower them and make them worship one as a giant god, and demand that sacrifices periodically be thrown down the stairs in order to stay your horrible wrath?
*** KidsAreCruel. Very, very cruel.
*** A better question is, where did this kid get all of these wonderful toys? I want a Smash Bros collectible trophy toyline, dagnabbit.
*** Though, I guess with Brawl and the advent of Tabuu and his puppet strings of doom, that whole Kid-Playing-With-Toys thing might be going out the window.
*** Since "Tabuu is The Master Hand's Mom" as mentioned in the WMG, that's a metaphor for forcing her son to put away his toys for the night.
*** Wasn't it Master Hand's Dad?
*** I guess you missed out... this little store near where I used to live as a kid used to sell PVC Nintendo figurines at 3 bucks a pop. I had about a zillion Marios in different poses, a Luigi, a couple of Links, a King Hippo... and of course, being a kid, I put on Smash Bros. style fights with them. Dunno if they make 'em any more, but if they don't, Smash Bros. would be a prime excuse to reissue them. //Later: Apparently, they are still being made in some form; [[http://stores.ebay.com/Toonsplace-Collectibles_Super-Mario_W0QQfsubZ12805999 this guy]] is selling some sets on eBay.
*** Actually, I was always under the impression that Master Hand ''is'', in fact, a character from a video game. For example, look at the menu screen of any other video game; you'll find that your pointer is often ''a white gloved hand''. This is the hand that ''controls every action some videogame characters make''. Buuuut, that's just my opinion...
*** Doesn't Master Hand make a reappearance as a boss in one of the Kirby games? I think you even got Kirby's Melee moveset for "copying" him.
*** Yup. He's also the white glove in the "Continue" screen for various Kirby games.
*** Of course, in a game where electric mice, huge fire breathing turtles, a pink marshmallow that swallows things and absorbs their power, a hedgehog that can run faster then the speed of sound, and a sexy princess that [[strike:transforms]] crossdresses into a ninja, the giant white hand is the odd nonsensical fight.
*** But he was the only one who didn't play by the same rules as everyone else. (At least before Crazy and the Subspace boss types.) Everyone else was affected by gravity and was defeated by falling off the stage or into the distance. He floated at will and had limited health. This was ''odd''.
*** He made up the rules, so why should he follow them.
*** [[ScrewTheRulesIMakeThem Indeed.]]
** My current theory is that MH and CH = VideoGame/{{Rayman}}.
*** Mine is that they're the hands of [[LosingYourHead Dr. Kawashima]].
*** No, I think they're based on [[VideoGame/TheLegendOfZeldaOcarinaOfTime Bongo Bongo]].
*** If they had been the hands of [[VideoGame/WarioLand3 Rudy the Clown]], we'd have had a much better final boss for the SSE.
*** Master Hand is totally Glover from the old [=PS1=]/N64 game 'Glover'.
*** Are you kidding? They've got to be [[Franchise/StarFox Andross]].
*** It looks to me that the moves are based off of [[VideoGame/KirbySuperStar Wham Bam Rock]].
*** [[VideoGame/MarvelVsCapcom3 Galactus]] tried white some number of years ago. Didn't like it. Preferred purple.
** Here's a better question: what does Crazy Hand represent?
*** [[AllThereInTheManual The trophy descriptions state]] that Master Hand represents creativity while Crazy Hand represents destruction. As in, the child gets their mind going on the possibilities of their favorite characters fighting each other, while at the same time, they pretty much beat up on their toys, as the KidsAreCruel note above signifies.
** Does it have to be a child? I always took it to be some sort of sadistic sorcerer (alliteration unintentional).
*** Wait a minute... if Tabuu is really the mother/father of Master Hand, who's said to be the kid... isn't that kind of throwing into Fridge Horror as you're KILLING the parents just because they said to put away your toys?
*** Why does Tabuu have to be anything but another toy? It has already been established that Master Hand is not too proud to lose to his toys (likely because the hand is a glove, so there could be some disconnect). For that game, Tabuu was the kid's favorite toy from the "subspace" play set so Tabuu was treated as an overwhelming strong guy.
*** Seems like recent titles threw away the whole "kid playing with toys" deal.
* Where was Master Core when Tabuu enslaved the Master Hand?
** There are three possible reasons I have: 1. Mater Core forms when Crazy Hand sacrifices itself to unleash Master Hand's inner chaos and upsets the balance, causing the dark swarm to burst out of him. 2. Tabuu sealed Crazy Hand away because its chaos and wanton destruction could easily destroy Subspace and effectively place him back at Square 1. 3. Master Core didn't exist yet and waited until there was even more fighters before revealing itself.
* Where in the world is Crazy Hand when all this big story stuff is going down? He didn't appear anywhere in the Subspace Emissary, and there were no left hands to be seen in the World Of Light trailer. Does he just do his own thing and not care about his brother being enslaved by eldritch abominations?
** Crazy Hand ''does'' appear in World of Light. He's under Dharkon's control while Master Hand is under Galeem's control.

[[folder:Other]]
* Why doesn't Lucario's Extreme Speed do any damage? It does damage in the Pokémon games. Even worse that Pikachu's Quick Attack can at least do SOME damage...
** Because Sora got it wrong and made double team the damaging move. Alternatively, to be less like Fox.
*** A bit of FridgeBrilliance on the note of Double Team, he uses the illusion to dodge and attack and take the opportunity to attack while the opponent is distracted, since Double Team is a superspeed based optical illusion. And perhaps Lucario uses Extreme Speed much like Pikachu uses Quick Attack to recover, but removes the damage out of fairness. Rather than hitting the opponent, he is passing them.
* Why does Marth have dialogue like "There's no way I can lose" and "Everyone look at me"? In his games, ''[[VideoGame/FireEmblemShadowDragonAndTheBladeOfLight Shadow Dragon]]'' and ''[[VideoGame/FireEmblemMysteryOfTheEmblem Mytery of the Emblem]]'', he's characterized as an [[IncorruptiblePurePureness almost disgustingly nice]] [[MessianicArchetype Messiah]] type who never acts condescending and he is often unsure of himself.
** I think it's supposed to be TheArtifact of [[VideoGame/FireEmblemGenealogyOfTheHolyWar Sigurd]] being planned as the ''Fire Emblem'' representant first or something. Of course, I don't know if the whole "They planned to use Sigurd" thing is real or not.
** Sigurd? Suddenly Marth's moveset makes sense.
** Is it really "Everyone look at me!"? I always figured it was "Everyone, watch over me!" and in asking for his (presumably dead) ''FE'' partners to give him strength.
*** Considering his tone of voice, this makes much more sense.
** Marth is a prince and commander of an army fighting for his lost nation. Would you not want the undivided attention of your comrades and forces?
*** In the original ''Fire Emblem'', Marth had a more naive personality. They retconned it for ''Shadow Dragon''.
** Also, it is actually more along the lines of "I can't lose"; as in, he can't afford to lose, possibly because what is at stake in his own series, also in which defeat=death. Plus, by the way those lines are said he sounds like he is trying to give himself confidence, keeping his rather low self-esteem in mind.
** For that matter, why are ''all'' of the ''Fire Emblem'' characters (except for Roy I guess) so out-of-character? Just check their character pages.
*** Maybe Lucina's OOC are her trying to be more like Marth. Her "I cannot lose." makes a bit more sense if Marth's "There's no way I can lose." is taken into account.
*** Also, her victory quotes "This is the Hero King?"/"And this is the Radiant Hero?" are more LostInTranslation issues. For whatever reason the dialogue remained the same but it was delivered in a sarcastic, condescending tone. In the original, she was in awe at their strength.
*** Roy's VA is also kind of hotblooded for him, though.
* Pikachu is wearing Brendan's ''headband'', however, it's been confirmed that that is a knit-hat. What gives? The series is typically quite game-accurate to a T.
** Pikachu is wearing a replica meant to invoke memories of Brendan. Their heads are not the same size.
** Pikachu wears hats though. What's so hard about wearing Brendan's hat?
** Since all of Pikachu's other costumes are headbands or goggles, they'd have to model a whole new type of headgear (complete with earholes).
* Why is damage expressed as a percentage? I understand why it counts up, but is 100% actually a threshold for anything?
** Well, since you don't actually kill anyone but knock them off the stage, I always figured it's how much you softened them up for flying around, with 100% being 'normal' knockback. If you hit anyone at 0%, they basically just flinch (cause they're at about 5% now) and at 100%, it's at lighter {{Punched Across The Room}} levels, which is normal for games.
** That and so people can be like "Whoa I'm at 238%!", which usually results in everyone trying to kill that character but failing because they're too impatient to connect a hit properly.
** Your get-up-from-the-ledge attack changes to a slower animation when you hit 100%. Most obvious with Donkey Kong and Bowser.
** For the knock-off-the-screen gameplay, increasing vulnerability works better than decreasing health (you're not [=KOed=] because your health hit zero, after all). Also, racking up a huge percentage of damage [[RuleOfCool looks cool]].
* What's with Zelda's victory animation? She looks so moody or depressed. Is she supposed to be lost in thought or something? Unlike the Sheik pose, it doesn't come off as so.
** Considering Brawl's version of Zelda is based off of TP's Zelda, who was rather solemn and melancholic, it makes sense.
*** Still kicking herself for letting Zant take control of Hyrule in the first place.
* Why isn't there a badge on Pikachu's hat? The one that's based off Red's hat.
** Based on Red's, not actually Red's.
* Why is Yoshi not considered a Mario Series character? I understand he has his own series, but he debuted as a Mario character, and still appears in Mario games.
** Even without Yoshi (and Wario), the Mario franchise is easily the largest in the game in terms of characters and stages, and rightfully so. Making Yoshi his own franchise helps keep it from being too big, going back to the first game when the Mario franchise already had 212 characters without him. Of course, they really push the envelope when they call the Super Mario World stage (starting in ''Melee'') a part of the Yoshi franchise.
* Who are the titular brothers?
** Nobody. It's just a play on "Super Mario Bros.".
* Why is it that the Prince of Sablé only attacks in frog or snake form? In ''VideoGame/ForTheFrogTheBellTolls'', he could only really fight in his human form.
[[/folder]]
[[folder:Terminology]]
* Where did the terms "spot dodge" and "knockback" come from? Don't the "How to Play" videos, from ''Melee'' and onwards, call them "sidestep" and "launch" or "launch power", respectively?

[[folder:Strange Series Symbols]]
* Shouldn't the symbol for the "Donkey Kong" series be a Banana rather than the DK initials. The Bananas have a lot more relevance in the DK games than the Kong's initials? Plus, K. Rool using the DK symbol makes no sense given that he's a Kremling, and he has been involved with the bananas in a few games.
* Why doesn't the "F-Zero" franchise simply use a generic F-Zero machine for its symbol. The series is all about fast-paced racing. What signifigance does Captain Falcon's falcon crest have on his games?
* Wouldn't a better "Bayonetta" series symbol be the Umbra Witches Symbol, which appears occasionally in the series? It is also used in the first game's logo and Bayonetta herself sometimes creates it.
* Why does the "Fire Emblem" series use a sword for its symbol? A better symbol for the series would be, the titular Fire Emblem, namely the Binding Shield from ''Mystery of the Emblem'' and ''Awakening''.
