!!Other examples:
* ''Manga/SevenSeeds'' has a rather unsuccessful, mean version of this in Unami, at the end of the Hail Of Corn arc, [[spoiler: after the seven members of Team Summer have been determined]]. Unami punches Koruri and begins to berate her, also Gengoro and Ango, but doesn't hit them. His words don't actually help any of them: Gengoro's mental state only gets worse, Ango is [[HeroicBSOD too far out]] to care and Koruri becomes so enraged that she promises to kill Unami.
* ''Anime/AfroSamurai'': The title character's {{Sidekick}} Ninja Ninja does this regularly; a subversion is that [[spoiler: Ninja Ninja is imaginary, a symptom of the title character's inner turmoil. It is in losing Ninja Ninja that Afro does, in fact, get a hold of himself. Interestingly, both are voiced by Samuel L Jackson]].
* ''Manga/AiKora'': In the final volume, [[spoiler:Yukari delivers one to Maeda and tells him to fight for Sakurako after he thinks he's torpedoed any chance he has with her and [[HeroicBSOD slips into despair]].]]
* ''Anime/AndroidKikaiderTheAnimation'': Towards the end of the series, Saburo/Hakaider, EvilCounterpart to Jiro/Kikaider, has spent an episode stomping up and down on Jiro's BerserkButton, [[spoiler:putting him in serious danger of warping his Gemini [[RestrainingBolt conscience circuit]] with all his violent emotions]]. Jiro's reluctant love interest, Mitsuko, brings him back to reality by bitch-slapping him back into his usual gentle self. It plays [[TheCoconutEffect exactly like slapping a human]], complete with the sound of flesh slapping flesh, despite the fact that it is long and repeatedly established that Jiro, even in human form, is MadeOfIron. The guy was freaking ''bullet-proof'' one episode ago!
* During Chapter 27/ Episode 8 of ''Manga/AsteroidInLove'', [[{{Tsundere}} Mikage]] flicks [[GenkiGirl Mira]] in the forehead and tells her to stop wallowing in self-pity, after Mira suffers a HeroicBSOD due to not noticing that something was wrong with her ChildhoodFriend Ao until [[spoiler:the latter told Mira and Mai about her family is moving out of the town soon]].
* ''Manga/AttackOnTitan'':
** The [[TheStoic level-headed]] Mikasa is often delivering them to Eren. Given the nature of the series, quite a few characters hand these out to their comrades.
** At one point, Eren headbutts Mikasa and tells her to pull it together when she begins doubting her abilities as a soldier.
* In ''Manga/{{Bakuman}}'', this happens on two separate occasions.
** In Chapter 67, Fukuda, having learned that [[spoiler:Nakai told Aoki he would only draw for her if she became his girlfriend]], barges in on him, punches him in the face and accuses him of throwing away his own career. [[spoiler:Nakai]], however, fails to get the point.
** In Chapter 112, Mashiro asks Takagi to do this to him, when he realizes that Takagi was only temporarily training Shiratori, when suspecting otherwise, among other things, nearly split them up. He complains that he didn't hit him nearly as hard as [[CallBack he hit Ishizawa in the past]], and the two end up having a (friendly) fight in the park to reconcile.
** In Chapter 127, [[spoiler:Nanamine, with his manga having dropped to 19th out of 20 places, his online helpers having abandoned him and having fired Nakai for causing his helpers to leave]], begins to give up hope, his editor punches him twice, telling him that while he dislikes him, the one thing he admires about him is his determination to succeed, and that he can't give up on him because he's his editor. [[spoiler:Nanamine]] considers [[SurprisinglyRealisticOutcome suing his editor for assault and/or getting him fired]], but decides against it, as [[PragmaticVillainy if he did, he would essentially become a laughingstock of the manga community]].
* ''Anime/{{Beyblade}}'' The manga version featured at least two accounts of this trope; once where Kai punches Tyson/Takao to make him lose his self-pity after losing a battle and another in a later book where Tyson/Takao returns the favor, punching Kai.
* ''Manga/BlackBloodBrothers'': Episode 8 has Cain giving Jirou a 'get a hold of yourself' psychic-powered-gut-punch strong enough to cause him to cough up blood. Just going to show that even vampires need to get straightened out sometimes.
* ''Anime/{{Bleach}}'':
** As a [[SuperpoweredEvilSide hollowfied Ichigo]] prepares to carve a dying Ulquiorra, [[IKnowYoureInThereSomewhereFight Ishida tries to stop him]], arguing that he won't be able to go back if he continues acting like a merciless monster. He gets [[ImpaledWithExtremePrejudice skewered]] for his trouble.
** Rukia tries to beat up Ichigo ''[[InvertedTrope after]]'' she [[spoiler:restores his Shinigami powers]], calling him out for "becoming a pathetic coward" since the last time they met and criticizing him for letting the enemy make him cry. She then tells him to [[DareToBeBadass show the enemy]] that [[{{Determinator}} despair is not enough to break his spirit.]]
** Shino pulls a comical one on Ryūnosuke Yuki due to his lack of faith in his abilities to take on the job as Karakura Town's Soul Reaper protector. Pity he was right.
** Anime Episode 334. After Nozomi rescues Kon from Kagerosa Inaba, he gets over-emotional and goes crazy hugging her. She slaps him twice across the face to bring him out of it.
** Faced with Kenpachi's overwhelming strength, Gremmy almost imagined his own death which [[ImaginationBasedSuperpower would have actually killed him]]. Kenpachi yelled at Gremmy to pull himself together so [[BloodKnight they could keep fighting]] and it worked.
* ''Anime/BloodPlus'':
** Post-timeskip, [[CharacterDevelopment Kai]] tries to snap [[TheStoic David]] out of his Heroic BSOD. When Kai pours David's booze down the sink, he attacks him. His reaction? Punch him in the gut, then give a [[TheReasonYouSuckSpeech lengthy speech]].
** In the final episode, [[spoiler:Saya tries to commit double murder-suicide on herself and Diva's newly born daughters, only for Kai to stop her from doing it. Then, Kai asks Haji if he's just going to let it happen. Haji replies that "if it's what Saya wishes". Kai snaps by punching him in the jaw and tells him to confess his true feelings to Saya]].
* In ''Manga/Brave10'', Saizo need Sasuke to give him a beating and a pep talk after being thoroughly curbstomped by Hanzo during their first fight (or when Isanami gets captured by Masamune in the anime).
* In ''Manga/BungoStrayDogs'', Dazai does this to Atsushi after the latter has been freed from a Q-induced curse.
* ''Anime/CaptainEarth'' has Akari's "Suck-It-Up Forte!" to [[TheLancer Teppei]].
* ''[[Anime/CaptainHarlock Captain Herlock: The Endless Odyssey]]'': This is ''the very first thing'' Captain [[SpellMyNameWithAnS Herlock]] does to Daiba upon their initial meeting, before Daiba's even had a chance to start {{Wangst}}ing properly over [[YouKilledMyFather his dead father]].
* ''Manga/ACertainScientificRailgun'': Kuroko to Uiharu during the Poltergeist arc, after the latter [[spoiler:breaks down having handed Kiyama's children over to BigBad Telestina.]]
* ''Manga/{{Claymore}}'' has [[spoiler:Teresa]] criticizing [[spoiler:Cassandra]] for allowing herself to be used like a puppet by [[spoiler:Priscilla]]. She regains control of herself as a result, while [[spoiler:Priscilla]]'s other victims are killed attempting the same.
* ''Anime/CodeGeass'':
** [[ActionGirl Kallen Kozuki]] applied her ''[[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6wuYUJfL8E4 Bright Seven Hit Combo]]'' to [[TheRival Suzaku Kururugi]] during her time as a prisoner of war. It ends up making him re-think his past actions and gets him to agree to meet [[TheChessmaster Lelouch]] to try and work things out. [[FromBadToWorse But this being Code Geass, though...]]
*** Also, it needs to be stated that Kallen didn't plan to slap Suzaku into realization or anything, but only wanted the satisfaction of [[NoHoldsBarredBeatdown beating him to a pulp]] out of annoyance for not being able to make up his freaking mind about whether he's a good guy or a bad guy. And did so while wearing high heels and a ''fancy gown''.
*** Since Suzaku came to himself before Kallen hit him (because at the time, he had attempted to drug her with Refrain to torture some information out of her), this could be considered an inversion of the trope.
** She also applies a more traditional slap to Lelouch when he asked her for the "[[SexForSolace comfort only a woman can provide]]" during his own HeroicBSOD. She demands Lelouch to get his act together and continue to be [[MyHeroZero Zero]] for the people he has an obligation to fulfill the dreams of. It partially worked, until [[TykeBomb Rolo]] showed up and tried to convince him that he ''should'' give up being Zero (though Rolo just wanted Lelouch to [[{{Yandere}} give up trying to rescue Nunnally, since he wanted to replace her as Lelouch's sibling]]).
* ''Manga/ACruelGodReigns'': William does this to Jeremy after he goes {{Laughing Mad}} when [[spoiler: the dorm leader moves him for kissing William.]]
* ''Manga/DGrayMan'':
** Lenalee does this to Allen in the anime, when Allen yells at her for stopping him from destroying and purifying an akuma.
** More recently, Allen punched Kanda in the face[[note]]With the hand that's an EmpathicWeapon. Ouch.[[/note]] to snap him out of [[spoiler:a HeroicBSOD brought on by Wisely's MindRape ExpositionBeam.]] Bonus points for [[spoiler:effectively hitting Wisely in the eye by proxy. Double ouch.]]
** Averted with Lavi, when trying to get Lenalee to get a grip after [[spoiler: Allen had lost his Innocence.]] He promptly got yelled at by everyone else for making her cry.
* ''Manga/DeadmanWonderland'': Koshio Karako slaps Nagi to try to wake him up from being berserk, complete with a "Get yourself together Nagi, you're our leader!"
* ''Manga/DeathNote'': [[spoiler: Light Yagami himself]] delivering one to [[spoiler: L, while they are chained together,]] when the latter begins falling into depression and doubt about the Kira investigation. [[spoiler: L, while lying on the ground, responds with a kick to the face, and the two continue to argue it out, so it's not exactly a straight example.]]
* ''Anime/DigimonAdventure'': Gabumon gives Yamato (Matt) a version of this where he BITES him when Matt is sinking into depression late in the series. Fortunately it helps Matt break through long enough for Gabumon to lecture him about [[YouAreNotAlone how he has friends who always stand by him including Gabumon himself]] and permanently restore Matt.
* ''Anime/DigimonAdventure02'':
** Yamato (Matt) punishes Taichi (Tai) for letting the Digimon Kaiser (Emperor) manage to kidnap Agumon. And punches him. Unfortunately, this tactic confuses poor Daisuke (Davis). Taichi says that he really needed that punch.
** Miyako (Yolei) and Hikari (Kari), later in the series, pull the trick on each other. ''In the same episode'', even. First, when they're stranded at the Dark Ocean, Miyako panics because Hawkmon can't evolve and Hikari slaps her, but later admits she wishes she was open about her feelings like Miyako is. Later, when Hikari has a much more serious FreakOut and almost loses it, Miyako slaps Hikari and gives her a RousingSpeech to tell her she's not alone anymore.
** In yet another episode, Daisuke does the same exact thing. When a depressed, recklessly unstable Ken attempts to go into his old base and destroy it himself, he's confronted by Daisuke, who wants Ken to fight with them together. However, Ken insists that he has to [[TheAtoner make up for his past deeds]] by himself. When he says that it doesn't matter [[RedemptionEqualsDeath what happens]] to ''him'' as long as this happens, Daisuke slaps him, fiercely telling him to LIVE. With Daisuke's RousingSpeech, Ken realizes that he is needed, thus prompting their Jogress Evolution (DNA Digivolve).
** A third episode has ''Miyako'' slap ''Ken'', for similar reasons. He refuses to help the Chosen Children out of fear of rejection, so she goes to try convince him join the group, and slapps him when he keeps refusing.
* ''Anime/DigimonFrontier'': Takuya administers this, a punch not a slap, to Kouji after he realizes Duskmon is [[spoiler:his twin brother Kouichi]] and has a HeroicBSOD.
* In ''Anime/DragonBallSuper'', Kid Trunks, angry that Future Trunks is being so mopey over his loss against Goku Black, tears into him, then demands that he stand up and fight. When the older Trunks refuses, the younger Trunks responds by slugging him in the face as a Super Saiyan, getting him out of his slump.
* ''[[Anime/NeonGenesisEvangelion End of Evangelion]]'': Subverted. In order to get Shinji out of his almost catatonic depression, Misato first gives him the choice of fighting or dying. It's rather easy to guess what he chooses, but it turns out Misato ain't accepting that as an answer. He can die later if he wants, so she says. After driving to the Eva cages, she is shot at by the JSSDF, and suffers a grievous wound. She tells Shinji that he can't give up before the battle has even started, and makes him promise that he will find the answers to his inner turmoil by piloting the Evangelion. He does promise her. She kisses him, sends him on his way, [[spoiler: and dies.]] It works, until [[spoiler: it turns out that Shinji can't save the day. His Eva is sealed in Bakelite.]]
-->'''Shinji:''' But you're not me! You don't know what I have to go through! You don't understand!\
'''Misato:''' ''So fucking what if I'm not you?!''
** Surprisingly ''Shinji'' gets to be the one who gives this trope out to [[ApocalypseMaiden Kaworu]] in one of the Visual Novels. It doesn't involve any punching; rather, by taking certain dialogue paths during their battle, Shinji can appeal to their friendship (and possibly [[LoveRedeems more]], at least on Kaworu's side) in order to pull an inverted TalkingTheMonsterToDeath by restoring Kaworu's will to live, [[HeelFaceTurn causing him to stand down without]] [[SparedByTheAdaptation Shinji being forced to kill him]].
* ''Anime/DoraemonNobitasDriftsInTheUniverse'' have Lian suffering a HeroicRROD when his attempts at killing the villain, Angolmois, unintentionally caused a nearby control panel to short-circuit, causing the [[PlanetSpaceship Milky Way Drifting Fleet]] to collapse and begin it's crashing on a nearby planet, potentially dooming everyone on board. Nobita quickly gave Lian a wake-up slap telling him he can blame himself later.
* ''Anime/EurekaSeven'':
** At several points throughout, Holland feels the need to beat the crap out of Renton whenever he feels particularly angsty. Often times, it doesn't really work.
** It's also less because Renton is angsting and more because Holland just plain hates him. Holland getting over that roughly marks the transition of the series from a [[{{Shonen}} shounen]] love story into a ridiculously over-the-top epic.
** In one amusing incident, Holland's beating up on Renton results in Holland getting slapped ''himself'' by Talho.
** Subverted in the final episode. [[spoiler:Renton is angsting, Holland yells at him, Renton complains that he couldn't save anyone and tells Holland to punch him... and Holland responds by calmly telling him to get ready, and that they're going to where Eureka is.]]
* In Episode 1 of the ''Anime/ExcelSaga'' anime, Excel tries to snap Pedro out of his homesickness by beating the crap out of him.
* ''{{Manga/FAKE}}'':
** When Dee goes into a HeroicBSOD after [[spoiler: the orphanage he grew up in is blow up with his mother figure still inside]]. Ryo gives him a good slap to bring him back to his senses.
** Dee returns the favor when Ryo, emotionally shaken by an encounter with his parents' murderer, comes on to him -- he backhands Ryo across the face and tells him off for tempting him to take advantage while he's in that kind of state.
* ''Manga/FullMoon'': Early on in the manga, Madoka tells her manager that she wants to quit and forcefully throws clothes into a suitcase, preparing for a trip to have fun, annoyed that someone hacked the results of a competition between her and Fullmoon. When her pet G-chan tries to stop her, she snaps that he's nothing more than a PR Gag... G-chan jumps into the air and slaps Madoka with his little hooves, causing Madoka to break down into tears and hugging him.
* ''Manga/{{Freezing}}'': Minor character Kyouichi breaks down when his BattleCouple ActionGirlfriend Cassie is seeming killed, and his sempai tells him to get up to find another Pandora to partner up with. Kyouichi freaks, declaring he'd never sync up with another Pandora besides Cassie, but his sempai decks him in the face, telling him that many others just lost their partners but that they have to keep fighting on.
* In the ''Anime/FreshPrettyCure'' [[TheMovie movie]], Cure Peach has a minor HeroicBSOD when she finds out Usapyon, a doll she had when she was younger, was part of BigBad [=ToyMajin=], thus part of his resentment of the human race. Cure Berry has to slap her out of it to snap her back to her senses and save the toys.
* ''Manga/FullmetalAlchemist'':
** Winry [[PercussiveMaintenance repeatedly hit Al with a wrench]], after [[{{HeroicBSOD}} he started wondering about his history and if he was really a human]] (or just a construct created by Ed).
** When Lt. Maria Ross slaps Ed for his deviance and recklessness. She even apologizes beforehand and afterward, since Ed is a superior officer.
*** Brosh tries this on Al, but only ends up hurting his hand.
** Lt. Hawkeye doesn't actually slap or hit him, but rather knocks Roy Mustang down for being stupid enough to try to use spark-based alchemy in the rain. She follows this up with a few pistol shots to ward off Scar.
** After hearing the news of Ling [[spoiler:becoming Greed]], Fuu slaps Lan Fan for failing to protect her prince, [[spoiler:losing her arm]] and giving in to despair. His actions seem to indicate that he's angriest about the latter.
* ''Literature/FullMetalPanic The Second Raid'':
** Subverted when Sousuke nearly gets them caught during a mission, Melissa Mao gives one of these speeches, concluding by saying that if he can't pull himself together then Sousuke can leave her to complete the mission on her own. To Mao's shock, that's exactly what Sousuke does.
** Near the end, [[spoiler:Kaname delivers an ''epic'' "Get a Hold of Yourself, Man!" to Sousuke to get him out of his HeroicBSOD, actually knocking him down with a [[DynamicEntry flying kick to the face]], and then hitting him several more times for good measure. Just seeing that she's alive probably would have been enough to restore Sousuke back to normal, but, well, it's [[{{Tsundere}} Kaname]]]].
* ''Anime/FutureGPXCyberFormula'':
** Happens a lot in the series. In Episode 35 of the TV series, Asuka gives one to Hayato when he goes hysterical over trying to destroy Asurada for making his friend Johji retire from Cyber Formula after the crash in the German race.
** In Episode 9, Kurumada gives one to Miki when she freaks out over rescue efforts for Ryohei being postponed by a typhoon.
** In Episode 5 of ''Double-One'', Grayson attempts to do this to Randoll when he gets angry over Schumacher messing up his pace in races and tries to quit the final race. It doesn't work, but then he participates in that race anyway.
** Kaga punches Shinjyo twice in Episode 6 of ''ZERO'', when Shinjyo was moping on the prospect of being fired from his racing team.
** Happens again in Episode 8 of the same series, Osamu delivers one to Henri when Henri tries to give up on his chance of being world champion. [[spoiler:He did just that.]] Ironically, Osamu ''himself'' got slapped by his father in a flashback in an episode of the TV series before he leaves to England.
* ''Manga/{{Genshiken}}'': Saki does this to Sasahara when he's Wangsting over not having found a job yet. The fact that {{Tsundere}} Ogiue is [[ThePromise none too happy with him]] either may or may not also have a influence over his getting a grip on himself.
* ''Manga/GetterRobo'': In the second episode of ''New Getter Robo'', [[SociopathicHero Hayato]] goes nuts and tries to turn the titular HumongousMecha on the people that hired him. Ryoma, who was [[CombiningMecha piloting the mecha with him]] solves the problem by jumping out of his cockpit (on the machine's waist), climbing up the front of it while it's running, breaking into Hayato's compartment on the head ''and'' punching him in the face. He sobered up considerably from that point on.
* In ''Anime/GhostInTheShellStandAloneComplex'', the Major [[HeroicBSOD BSODs]] after [[spoiler:encountering a traumatic memory in Kuze's cyberbrain]]. In an attempt to make her see sense, her partner Ishikawa gives her several light whaps on the cheek. She 'comes around' a few moments later, but her BSOD was so deep it's debatable that she even felt it. Unusual in that it breaks [[WouldntHitAGirl one of those sacred tropes]], but since the Major was so out of it, coupled with the fact it's possible for the cyborgs to turn off their nerve endings, it's doubtful she felt much.
* ''Manga/{{Gintama}}'':
** The First Division Captain of the Shinsengumi, Okita, is stressed out over his sister's illness, causing him to give in to his feelings of jealousy and isolation to the point that he insists on going out into battle while in a state where he would only drag the others down. In reply, his old friend and commander, Kondo, punches him hard enough to send him flying while paraphrasing the page quote by telling Okita that he, Okita, and Hijikata are good friends to the point that once one strayed from the right path, the other two would straighten him out with a few slaps. He then tells Okita that if he were to stray from the right path, then Okita should slap him back into shape.
** During the [[RescueArc Farewell Shunsengumi arc]], after Gintoki and the Shinsengumi find [[spoiler:the [[EliteMooks Naraku]] surrounding a seemingly dead Kondo]], the Shinsengumi (and especially Hijikata) [[HeroicBSOD freeze in their tracks]]. As the Naraku mobilize to kill them all, Gintoki snaps them out of it by rallying them into action, essentially telling them not to die. For a brief moment Hijikata sees Kondo in Gintoki's place, after which he and the Shinsengumi start fighting again with renewed vigour.
--->'''Gintoki:''' It's not over yet! Don't you dare end it yourself! Look forward! Grip your swords! ''FIGHT, SHINSENGUMI!!!''
* ''Anime/TheGirlWhoLeaptThroughSpace'':
** Honoka's slap is powerful enough to break Akiha out of mind control.
** In the finale, [[spoiler: Akiha breaks Leopard out of possession with an [[Anime/GunBuster Inazuma Kick]].]]
* ''Manga/GTOTheEarlyYears'': When Katsuyuki tries to attack the retreating Enoshima students, Kamata punches some sense into him and tells him they were the [[NamesToRunAwayFromReallyFast Kamakura Massacre Unit]].
* ''Manga/HajimeNoIppo'': [[spoiler: Aiko Date gives a verbal one to her husband Eiji, the ex-Japanese featherweight champion, when she realises she can't bear to see him sad and frustrated after his forced retirement. Seeing he's a born boxer yet insists on working as a salaryman to provide for her and their child Yuushi, Aiko straightforwardly tells him to not sacrifice himself for them anymore and come back one last time to the ring. [[HesBack And he does. Boy, he DOES]].]]
* ''Anime/HappinessChargePrettyCure'': Hime has to pinch Megumi to snap her out of a HeroicBSOD after Phantom delivers a BreakingSpeech while wearing her shadow as Cure [=UnLovely=]
* Deconstructed in the ''Anime/HugttoPrettyCure'' movie ''[=HUGtto!=] [=PreCure=] ♥ Futari wa [=PreCure=]: All-Stars Memories''. Hana falls into despair when her and Nagisa's situation, dealing with their friends being turned into amnesic babies, is too much. Harry tells her to stop that, that Precure don't cry, but Nagisa tells off Henry, reminding him that they're still junior high girls and they have every right to feel this way.
* ''Literature/HighSchoolDXD'': [[spoiler: After [[OurHeroIsDead Issei died in volume 11]], the entire Gremory group got hit with a HeroicBSOD for a few days. Unfortunately, the entire underworld is also under attack by Chaos Brigade and the leaders need the help of every single able-bodied person. Cue Sairaorg coming to Rias' home and snapping her out of her breakdown by telling her that Issei will come back to them because [[ItMakesSenseInContext Issei hasn't made out with Rias nor his harem yet.]] It works big time.]]
* ''Manga/HighschoolOfTheDead'': Takashi [[WouldHitAGirl does this to Rei]] in the very [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0y_7mOnaDTc first episode]]. The scene has become MemeticMutation among fans of the show due to Rei's status as TheScrappy.
* ''VisualNovel/HigurashiWhenTheyCry'':
** Rena Ryuugu "fixes" a sulking Mion Sonozaki this way, saying [[PercussiveMaintenance it's how she fixes her TV]].
** Shion also does this to Satoko towards the end of Minagoroshi-hen; [[spoiler:Satoko, fatigued and traumatised from seeing half of her friends killed, [[GoOnWithoutMe just wants to give up, lay down and die where she is]]. Shion pulls Satoko close and slaps her across the face, telling her she cannot just resolve to give up so easily. [[FromBadToWorse Too bad they get caught a few seconds later.]]]]
* ''Manga/{{Holyland}}'':
** Masaki does this to Yuu when the latter is [[spoiler: carrying out ExtremeMeleeRevenge on Katou. It doesn't take. Later he tries again and it does work this time.]]
** Shin of all people does this to Yuu in Chapter 101.
* ''Anime/TheIdolmaster'': Hibiki gets slapped to get her out of her self-pity. The slapper? Her pet hamster.
* ''VideoGame/InazumaEleven'': On numerous occasions with several different characters, a character's mental block or depression is resolved by Gouenji kicking a (often flaming) soccer ball and hitting them, followed by a forceful lecture. On one occasion, Endou also accidentally does this to [[spoiler:Kidou]] by kicking a ball to him and expecting him to catch it, but he was too busy sulking and lets it hit him instead.
* ''Manga/InuYasha'': The title character gives one of these to Miroku, after a hallucination makes him believe the [[CursedWithAwesome Wind Tunnel]] is swallowing him up. Inuyasha seems quite disturbed by Miroku's cries of sheer terror. This is [[JustifiedTrope justified]] though, as Miroku is the kind of character who will poke at faceless corpses without blinking and take on demons the size of skyscrapers with a staff and a prayer. This scene very effectively gets across just ''how'' shaken up Miroku is.
* ''Manga/IWantYourMotherToBeWithMe'': In Chapter 8, Ryo keeps a level head and gives Yuzuki a CooldownHug to get her to stop panicking about her son Asahi wandering off.
* ''Anime/JewelpetSunshine''
** In Episode 22-A, Charotte stings Shouko in the face, knocking her to the ground, when Shouko is angsting about her unrequited love for Master.
** In Episode 41-A, Angela kicks Labra for panicking after causing Luna to get trapped in a mirror.
** In Episode 42, Labra hits Angela with a blowdryer because of the latter's doubts about her partnership with Shouko.
* ''Manga/JujutsuKaisen'': While fighting Hanami, Yuji attempts to use Black Flash, only failing after [[UnstoppableRage his rage at Junpei's death and Megumi's injuries makes him lose his concentration]]. Todo interrupts the fight and slaps him, telling him to [[TameHisAnger not allow his rage to control him]], and that while he understands why Yuji might be angry, right now his anger is more of a [[RevengeBeforeReason burden]] than a [[ThePowerOfHate boon]]. After Todo slaps him again, Yuji declares that he's calmed down, and manages to successfully use [[CriticalHit Black Flash]] the second time around, [[MegatonPunch landing a devastating blow on Hanami]].
* In Chapter [[spoiler: 32]] of ''Manga/KurokosBasketball'', [[spoiler: Kuroko]] snaps [[spoiler: Kagami]] out of his increasingly {{Jerkass}}-ish, "I'll win this on my own" behavior with a punch to the face.
* ''Manga/LovelyComplex'': Risa is fond of using this method to calm people down or get them to think more rationally. She punches Otani twice, and Mimi once.
* ''Anime/{{Macross}}'':
** ''Anime/MacrossFrontier'': Sheryl does this to Ranka in Episode 20. Then, Ranka does it to her in the last episode.
** {{Subverted}} in the second ''Anime/MacrossFrontier'' [[AlternateContinuity movie]]; Mikhail attempts to give one to Alto, both the statement and a slap, after [[spoiler: Sheryl and Ozma are apparently killed fleeing from Brera after the jailbreak]], but Alto blocks it and asks what's wrong with being sad, but is also still determined to fight.
** Hikaru also does this to Minmay in ''Anime/MacrossDoYouRememberLove'', when [[spoiler:she has an HeroicBSOD over finding out Hikaru has gotten together with Misa during the time Minmay herself was a hostage of the Zentraedi, refusing to sing in battle and saying that she wouldn't care if everyone else outside of her and Hikaru died, so long as the two of them can be together. That's what sets off Hikaru and triggers his Brightslap, as well as a lecture that enough people have died already and she is the only one who can put a stop to it]].
** ''Anime/MacrossDelta'' gets in on the action in [[spoiler: Episode 20, with Mirage delivering ''two'' pretty much simultaneously -- to Freyja and Hayate, when it seems like the two of them are giving up after the events of the previous episode]].
* ''Anime/MagicalGirlLyricalNanohaStrikers'': Signum does this to Teana while Teana is attempting to justify her self-imposed TrainingFromHell and complaining about her seeming inadequacy compared to the other Section 6 mages, with Signum telling Nanoha that "Brats like that will only get spoiled if you listen to them." The punch knocks Teana back a few feet, even while Signum was ''holding back''. The SIGNUM PUNCH has since reached near-Bright levels of MemeticMutation.
* In ''Manga/MagiLabyrinthOfMagic'' spin off ''Sinbad no Bouken'', when [[TeamMom Rurumu]] politely asked [[SpellMyNameWithAnS Celendine/Serendine]] to assist with the company, the Princess not only refused rudely (despite the fact she and her attendants are living in the company grounds), she ''snapped'' at Drakon -- who had suffered so much for her sake -- for trying to defuse the situation. Rurumu ended up giving her an extremely gentle smack, and reminded her that she needs to think about her people's welfare instead of her own pride.
* The ''Mazinger'' saga:
** ''Anime/MazingerZ'': Subverted. Sometimes Kouji slapped Sayaka to try to calm her down or get her out of a HeroicBSOD (it happened as soon as Episode 7). However, given that he is ''infamously'' tactless, it did not work. The only thing it accomplished was getting her mad -- or madder.
** ''Anime/GreatMazinger'': It also was subverted in the sequel. Jun tried that method with Tetsuya when he was going through his mental breakdown in the last episodes of the series. Unfortunately, it was useless and it did not manage to prevent his later HeroicBSOD.
* Omega-Xis does a variation of this to stop Geo's panic attack in the second season of the ''VideoGame/MegaManStarForce'' anime. Being a head grafted onto Geo's arm, Mega has no hands to slap Geo with. He bites him instead.
* ''Manga/MyHeroAcademia'':
** Deku and Shoto had to talk some sense into Tenya when he was blinded by his own rage towards the Hero Killer, who permanently crippled Tenya's older brother.
** During their fight against All Might, Deku does this to Bakugo when the latter angrily bemoans that he'd rather fail the exam than team up with Deku to fight. Mind, this isn't out of ego-boosting on either one's part -- it's both to save Bakugo from All Might's hold and get him to regroup and think of a way to work around All Might to, if not defeat him, overwhelm him with their combined powers and pass the exam. It works.
** Later, Tenya tries snap Deku out of going to [[spoiler:rescue Bakugo from the League of Villains,]] which is both suicidal and likely to get him expelled from U.A. pointing out that what Deku is trying to do is exactly what he prevented Tenya from doing.
* ''Anime/MyHime'':
** Natsuki gives one to Mai in just as she's reliving [[spoiler:the tragedy that killed her mother and nearly did the same for her brother, for which Mai feels responsible]], and tries to get Mai to remember what she's fighting for.
** She does it in [[Manga/MyHime the last volume of the manga]], too, after [[spoiler:Mai is {{brainwashed}} into [[FaceHeelTurn fighting with the QUEENs]]]]. Rather than simply slapping her, Natsuki opts to use [[MegatonPunch the whole hand]].
** In the manga, Yuuichi tries to do this with Shiho when she is threatening to kill him if he doesn't go with her, and had previously brainwashed Mikoto to attack Mai, arguing that the Shiho he remembers is a better person than this, but given the [[BrainwashedAndCrazy brainwashing effects]] of the Princess Earrings, this doesn't work.
* ''Anime/MyOtome'': Shizuru does this to get Nina to calm down when she goes hysterical after Sergey is reported missing, then follows with a CooldownHug.
* ''Anime/MyOtomeZwei'': In the final episode with Arika unable to use the power of the Blue Sky Sapphire after she and Mashiro fell out, Mashiro tells Arika to [[HitMeDammit slap her]]. Arika agrees, but only if Mashiro will slap her back. They do so, and then vow to do the same in the future if one of them gets stubborn.
* ''Manga/{{Naruto}}'':
** Naruto does this to Sasuke in the Forest of Death, when Sasuke considers handing over their scroll to the Grass Ninja attacking them (who turns out to be Orochimaru), telling him that they won't necessarily be spared even if they hand over the scroll. After Naruto gets knocked out, Sasuke becomes willing to fight.
** Guy tries this on Kakashi after they discover the horrible truth that [[spoiler: Tobi is in fact ''Obito Uchiha'']]. He gets over it, eventually.
** [[spoiler:[[ShrinkingViolet Hinata]]]] gives one of these to Naruto, starting with a soft slap to the face which then turns into a caress, to help him [[spoiler:shake off Obito's BreakingSpeech after her cousin Neji's HeroicSacrifice]]. ''It works!''
* ''Manga/NegimaMagisterNegiMagi'':
** Nodoka, of all people, does this to Yue after the latter nearly has a HeroicBSOD because she thinks she betrayed Nodoka by [[MatchmakerCrush developing a crush on Negi]]. It's the first time in the whole series that Nodoka has done ''anything'' violent.
** Shortly after, Yue does the same to Negi to get him over his {{Wangst}} about the current arc's {{Grey and Gray Morality}}.
** Asuna applies the Bright Slap to Setsuna when she's beginning to flip out and be {{Wangst}}y over having white wings. Asuna also smacks ''Negi'', ''[[PapaWolf of all people]]'', for just giving in into Fate's terms (for his students' safety) rather than to fight for the sake the world.
** In Chapter 265, [[spoiler:Nodoka, Asakura, and ESPECIALLY Chisame to Negi (again) for just giving in to Magia Erebea. Bonus points for Chisame since she was the one who dealt the blow, in [[LittleMissSnarker loli]] form, while telling him to "get a goddamn grip on yourself".]]
** [[spoiler:Chisame]] did it again in Chapter 307, [[spoiler:[[HeroicRROD only that didn't really]] [[PostVictoryCollapse work like before]]]].
** In Chapter 269 in a flashback, [[spoiler:when Nagi stops Arika's HeroicSelfDeprecation and her requests that he leave her to die by [[UseYourHead headbutting her]], giving us a once-in-a-lifetime shot of [[SugarAndIcePersonality Ms. Serious]] as a [[BlankWhiteEyes shocked]] chibi]].
** [[CrazyIsCool Rakan]] gives one of these to Negi to break him out of his SuperPoweredEvilSide, ''[[spoiler: from beyond the grave]]''. Seriously, [[spoiler: Rakan had ''been utterly erased from existence'', but simply willed himeslf into existing again for a bit]] [[CrazyIsCool solely to smack Negi upside the head]].
* ''Manga/OnePiece'':
** In Chapter 590, [[FishPerson Jimbei]] does this to Luffy in an attempt to shock him out of the [[HeroicBSOD Heroic BSOD]] which occurs due to [[spoiler:the death of Ace, both physically restraining him and verbally reminding him that he hasn't lost everything yet.]]
** Vivi goes overboard in the Chopper arc when she slaps the freezing Usopp awake. His head grew 3 sizes. In TheMovie version, Robin uses a slapping technique with her Devil Fruit powers similar to the one she used on Spandam.
** It goes back as far as the first episode. Coby has a nervous breakdown about how he'll never be able to join the Marines because of being Alvida's cabin boy. Cue Luffy giving him a much-needed conk on the noggin.
---> '''Coby:''' Why did you hit me?\
'''Luffy:''' Because I felt like it.
** In the Dressrosa arc we're introduced to Baby 5, a woman with a pathological need to feel useful. A trait her crewmates in the Doflamingo Family have fully exploited throughout her life. When facing off against another character in the arc, Sai, he tells her he'd be happy if she just died. Though meant as a taunt, Sai is shocked when Baby 5 ''begins to actually try killing herself''. He immediately rushes to her and slaps her to stop her. He even offers to marry her afterward, after seeing her own crew see her as just a tool (much to Baby 5's delight).
* ''Manga/PandoraHearts'':
** Gil slaps Oz across the face when he [[{{Yandere}} totally loses it]] and is trying to destroy everything after witnessing [[spoiler:Alice's death in the memories from one hundred years ago]].
** In Retrace LXV, Oz punches [[spoiler:Leo]] to try and bring him back to his senses after he's [[spoiler:gone on a rampage with Jabberwock and is trying to destroy everything since, after Elliot's death, he's pretty much StoppedCaring]]. It works [[spoiler:until Jack shows up and uses B-Rabbit's power to impale Leo]].
* ''Literature/OthersidePicnic'' has Toriko slapping Sorawo on a few occasions when the phenomena in Otherside nearly drive her insane. At one point, Sorawo jokes that Toriko is well on her way to becoming a domestic abuser (hurting Toriko's feelings). Later, when Sorawo requests a slap to avoid SanitySlippage after a near death incident, Toriko, mindful of what Sorawo had said before, opts to deliver a [[TheBigDamnKiss Big Damn Kiss]] instead.
* ''Anime/PanzerWorldGalient'': Subverted in Episode 4 when Chururu pitches a fit and Hilmuka slaps her to calm her down and keep her quiet. Chururu's reaction was crying out louder.
* ''Manga/PeacemakerKurogane'': After Tetsunosuke nearly gets killed by Yoshida, the man who killed his parents, a second time, he spends an episode or two holding hiding out in a closet freaking out and scratching at people who try to get him to come out. Susumu calls him out on his {{Wangst}}ing and gives him a "Get a Hold of Yourself, Man!" speech, telling him that he's sick of Tetsunosuke's bullshit, and throws him a sword saying that if he can find the courage he should stick to his original goal of killing his parents' murderer.
* In ''Anime/Persona4TheAnimation'' Episode 2, Yu hauls off and punches Yosuke during the confrontation with Shadow Yosuke, at the same time as Yu's Persona Izanagi punches the giant Shadow. This may have been an accident -- at least, Yu claims it was, with a hilariously deadpan "Sorry, wrong guy," -- but it has the effect of snapping Yosuke out of the freakout brought on by his Shadow's BreakingSpeech.
** And then, in the final episode, [[spoiler: Yu himself is on the receiving end of one, courtesy of Margaret, as she slaps him in order to snap him out of a [[HeroicBSOD BSOD-induced]] LotusEaterMachine. ]]
* ''Franchise/{{Pokemon}}'':
** ''Anime/PokemonTheSeries'':
*** Jessie has to do this to James on occasion. The earliest occasion is in "Battle Aboard the St. Anne" during the sinking of the titular ship, when James tries to give up right before they reach the bottom of the ship to effect their escape.
*** Serena tries to get Ash to [[OOCIsSeriousBusiness open up about his problems]] when he's {{wangst}}ing in "Seeing the Forest for the Trees!" [[HeroicBSOD after his loss to Wulfric]]. [[RightfortheWrongReasons However]], they ended up [[WhattheHellHero arguing]] and Serena knocked some sense into Ash by throwing snowballs at him. Realizing that Serena was right about his [[JerkassRealization behavior]] and [[MyGodWhatHaveIDone felt guilty for being rough on her]], Ash went off to pull himself together and apologized to her at the end of the episode.
** ''Manga/PokemonAdventures'':
*** Crystal's mother slaps her when she is [[HeroicBSOD BSODing]] after her failure to capture Suicune in order to snap her out of this. Of course, the slap was edited into a DeathGlare in the American releases [[MoralGuardians for some reason]], so now not only is it less effective to the reader, it ''[[DubInducedPlotHole makes absolutely no sense]]''.
*** In the FR/LG arc, [[TheRival Green]] does this to Red to snap ''him'' out of a HeroicBSOD.
* ''Manga/{{Pretear}}'': In the manga version, Kei does this to Sasame when the latter starts whining about failing to protect the titular MagicalGirl.
* ''Anime/ThePrinceOfTennis'':
** During the pre-Rikkai episodes, Ryoma suffers an humiliating defeat in an unofficial game at the hands of Sanada and has an HeroicBSOD. The one who pulls him out of it is none other than ex-{{Jerkass}}, now JerkWithAHeartOfGold Jin Akutsu, who taunts him during ''their'' impromptu game by ''repeatedly'' calling him a coward until Ryoma fights back.
** A more subtle version is what [[PluckyGirl An Tachibana]] does to [[GenkiGirl Genki Boy]] Takeshi Momoshiro, snapping him out of his funk when he's depressed over [[BroughtDownToNormal losing his spot in the regulars to Inui]].
** Then there's the time Davide of Rokkaku and his doubles partner Bane turn this trope into a JOKE. Bane, realizing that he's heading towards a FreakOut because they're starting to lose, asks Davide to slap his face and wake him up. Davide complies even before Bane has finished his request. Then, when Bane prepares to give Davide a return wake-up slap, he's shocked to see that Davide has turned and walked off calmly before he finished recovering from his own slappage.
* ''Manga/PrincessPrincess'': Sayaka goes insane and threatens to jump off of a cliff when Tooru tells her he only likes her as a sister. She refuses to listen when people try to get her to stop, saying "No! If Tooru-kun doesn't choose me, I'd rather die!" Cue Tooru slapping her across the face and saying "Don't say you want to die so easily! If you kill yourself we won't be able to see each other anymore!"
* ''Anime/RahXephon'': Happens to several characters. Averted when a CO says that he can't bring himself to hit the person freaking out.
* ''Manga/RanmaOneHalf'': Ryōga performs a "Get a Hold of Yourself, Man!" punch on Ranma when the latter is experiencing {{Heroic BSOD}} [[spoiler:due to Akane's supposed death.]] Not only does that ''not'' work, but Ryōga ends up having to physically carry him away to safety. After that, Ryōga's attempts to pull him out of it fall flat until they find out that [[spoiler:Akane's still alive.]]
* ''Anime/RevolutionaryGirlUtena'':
** Name an episode of that doesn't have someone being slapped. Forget duels, slapping is the prefered method of doing harm to someone in the show.
** A particularly notable one, however, is when Wakaba slaps Utena during the latter's HeroicBSOD toward the end of the first arc. She is the absolute least likely person, barring Anthy [[spoiler:(so far as we know at that point in the series)]] to hit ''Utena'', of all people.
* In Episode 4 in the animated ''Manga/RosarioPlusVampire'', Moka applies a hard slap to Tsukune's face to make him realize he himself saved her, Kurumu, and Yukari when they saved him from a trio of some really, ''REALLY'' creepy [[StalkerWithACrush fanboys]].
* ''Manga/RozenMaiden'': Nori does this to Jun in Episode 11 of the first season, as [[spoiler:he suffers a mental breakdown caused by dream hallucinations.]]
* ''Manga/RurouniKenshin'':
** Megumi pulls one of these on Kaoru [[spoiler: when the latter freaks out and won't run for cover during Kenshin's fight with Enishi]].
** As the TeamMom, Megumi gave one to Kaoru much earlier, [[spoiler: during her HeroicBSOD after Kenshin leaves to Kyoto]]. And during the Ganryu Takeda arc, Kaoru ''and'' Sanosuke gave speeches like that to Megumi herself: Kaoru did it to [[spoiler: stop Megumi from running away when the Oniwabashu came for her]], and Sano did it to [[spoiler: keep her from [[{{Seppuku}} killing herself in guilt]] when everything was over]].
** In the Kyoto Arc, Sano decks Kenshin one less to pull him out of it and more just to express his anger at having been considered a weak link and ditched.
** Sano also attempts to punch Kenshin out of his HeroicBSOD in the Jinchuu arc. It fails. [[spoiler: A quiet plea from help from Yahiko's girlfriend [[ShrinkingViolet Tsubame]] is what ends up working.]]
* ''Franchise/SailorMoon'':
** Usagi gets slapped a few times. Most often by Rei, although in the first season finale, her wanting to give the Silver Crystal to Queen Beryl provoked sweet, kind Ami to do it.
** And Chibi-Usa does it with a toy gun in the ''Sailor Moon R'' movie. "Heroes of Justice don't cry!"
** In the manga, Makoto gets one from her own Crystal Guardian when she doubts whether she truly wants to be a Senshi while trapped on a LotusEaterMachine.
** In the [=StarS=] arc of the manga, Minako gets one from Haruka when she panics over the deaths of Ami and Makoto.
* ''Manga/SaintSeiya'':
** Ikki to his little brother when Shun [[spoiler:became Hades]].
** Seiya is on the receiving end of this during the Abel movie, [[DespairEventHorizon being in a depressed funk and a state of utter despair]] over 1) Athena basically abandoning them 2) Athena getting herself killed by her brother. Seiya having thus lost all purpose, and having been utterly destroyed by Atlas, it takes a particularly violent instance of the trope at the hands of Saga acting the part of a TricksterMentor to get him out of it and restore his HeroicResolve.
* ''VideoGame/SengokuBasara'':
** Shingen abuses his BrightSlap privileges in the anime. Watching him sucker-punch [[FearlessFool Yukimura]] into walls to teach him a lesson is nearly a {{Once an Episode}} occurrence.
** The considerably more laid-back shinobi Sasuke hauls off and slaps Kasuga in Episode 10 when she declares her intention to go on a RoaringRampageOfRevenge against Nobunaga and his minions.
* ''Manga/ShamanKing'': None other than the calm Yoh Asakura does it and several times. He first punches Horohoro as the two are falling from a plane and later to Lyserg after his defeat in which he was yelling he needed strong friends.
* ''Anime/ShinMazinger'': Kouji's grandpa Juuzo snap him out of a HeroicBSOD by ''surfing a RocketPunch'' through the air, using it to bust a hole through the robot that had him pinned down, then jumping off it on the other side and into Kouji's cockpit.
* ''Anime/ShowByRock'': Cyan does an ''electric guitar'' variant of this when Retoree is afraid that Plasmagica might lose the battle of the bands against Criticrista and that they might be humiliated for the loss.
* ''Manga/SoulEater'':
** Subverted in the anime when Maka finds Crona hiding in a sand pit outside Death City out of guilt for [[spoiler:betraying Shibusen by helping Medusa]]. Maka very nearly punches [[AmbiguousGender hir]], but instead settles for a CooldownHug.
** When Kid nearly quits his mission because his opponent laid out asymmetrical bombs, Patti handles this '''''Awesomely.'''''
--> '''Liz:''' "It's your turn Patti. Tell him in that ''special way'' that you have.
--> '''Patti:''' "Oh, okay.
-->{{Beat}}
--> '''Patti''' ''"Get your ass movin now, damn you!"''
* In ''Manga/{{Strider}}'', after Kain finds out that, in his BrainwashedAndCrazy state, he killed his and Hiryu's friend Sheena in the middle of battle, he totally loses it and starts banging his head against the wall, screaming madly while [[MadnessMantra constantly repeating that he couldn't have done it]]. He starts bleeding from the head when Hiryu finally is able to stop and calm him down enough to explain that it was all the manipulation of an EvilCorp's MindControlDevice, and that they need to put an end to them.
* In ''Anime/SuperDimensionCavalrySouthernCross'', Mary Angel slaps Jeanne Fránçaix after Francaix doesn't help shot down the enemies attacking their space ship, because it was her first time in space and her [[ParanoiaFuel paranoid]] fear of dying in space gets the best of her. After the slap, she pulls out of it and starts defending the ship.
* ''Anime/TekkamanBlade'': Aki Kisaragi does this to D-Boy.
* ''Anime/TengenToppaGurrenLagann'':
** First with Kamina decking Simon and soon after ''throwing [[GrievousHarmWithABody the arm]] from his HumongousMecha at Simon's mecha''. After the TimeSkip we have [[spoiler:Simon doing it to [[DrivenToSuicide a suicidal Rossiu]] ''after jumping through hyperspace'']] proving that yes, even Kamina can be topped in badass delivery of the line:
-->'''''[[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WXVtWR_fZlI Ha o KUISHIBAREEE! / Let's see you GRIT THOSE TEETH!!]]'''''
** Plus [[spoiler:he'd never jumped through hyperspace before then.]] Which means that [[spoiler:he ''instantly'' learned to ''jump through hyperspace'', for the purpose of ''punching someone in the face.'']]
** In the second movie, in order to cut down on time, Rossiu is in some room on the Cathedral Lazengann, fixing to pull the trigger, when Kinon comes in and slaps him and gives him a teary speech instead.
** And [[MsFanservice Yoko]] slapping the front of Simon's mech in the third episode when he was considering giving up.
* Subverted in ''Anime/TigerAndBunny''. Rather than snapping Barnaby out of his outburst, Kotetsu's slap just makes him leave in an angry huff. [[spoiler:Four episodes later, Kotetsu again slaps the mind-wiped Barnaby, hoping to jostle his memory of the fight they had the day before (and thus of Kotetsu himself)... [[DoubleSubversion only for Barnaby to get extremely pissed]] that [[ISurrenderSuckers his opponent would sucker-punch him after admitting defeat.]]]]
* ''Manga/TokyoMewMew'': This is done by [[TheLancer Minto]] to [[TheHero Mew Ichigo]], complete with "Get a hold of yourself!", to cancel the latter's HeroicBSOD caused by [[spoiler:her boyfriend's transformation into the BigBad]], as her inability to fight causes her friends to get injured.
* ''Anime/TransformersCybertron'': Vector Prime does this to Optimus Prime when the latter suffers a crisis of leadership.
* ''Anime/UchuuSenkanYamato'': In Season 1, Captain Okita finds it necessary to employ this maneuver upon a whining Susumu Kodai.
* In ''Anime/UmiMonogatari'', Oshima tells Kanon to stop her half-hearted attempts and face her without hesitation, galvanizing Kanon to do better.
* In ''Manga/VirginLove'', when Kaoru has an anxiety attack at Ian's farewell party Daigo tries to get him to pull out of it, but eventually has to settle for knocking him right out, knowing Kaoru would hate everyone seeing him have a breakdown.
* ''VisualNovel/WeWithoutWings'': Asuka [[spoiler: brings back Takashi from his AngstComa this way.]] The kicker was that the other three personalities ''take turns'' to get beaten up!
* ''Manga/WolfGuyWolfenCrest'': Delivered by Aoshika to the local ButtMonkey when he turns on Inugami after the shootout.
* ''Anime/YuGiOh'':
** In Season 4, [[Characters/YuGiOhYamiYugi Yami Yugi]] gets one of this from Jounouchi. After causing the temporary "death" (soul loss, long story) of regular Yugi, he gets a HeroicBSOD, until Jounouchi tells him to make him see sense, and punches him in the face. It works, though he still mopes about it a lot, he actually ''does'' something about it, too.
** [[Characters/YuGiOhSetoKaiba Seto Kaiba]] snaps Yugi out of despair when he is about to give up against Strings and his Slifer. In the manga, he even figures out that Slifer isn't "invincible" ''before'' Yugi, and tells him so (albeit without clear hints, which would probably be against the rules).
-> '''Kaiba:''' "Get up, Yugi! If a God stands in your way, knock God down!"
** Mai gave a solely verbal one to Yugi in the [=4Kids=] version when, after the incident with Kaiba that had him [[SadisticChoice force Yugi and Yami to choose between losing the Star Chips they had or winning and killing Kaiba]] the day before, Yugi refused to duel her at full strength. In the original version, it's somewhat different, as she instead calls him out on not taking her seriously as an opponent and underestimating her, which causes him to nearly lose the duel.
** Mai gives this to Jonouchi after he goes through a HeroicBSOD as he recovers from being Marik's BrainwashedAndCrazy slave and nearly killing Yugi. Cue the slap (The [=4Kids=] version of the anime cuts it out, but viewers can blatantly see her raise her hand to deliver it right before the edit).
* ''Anime/YuGiOh5Ds'': Jack punches Yusei in the gut to break Yusei out of his slump when he's blaming himself about Kiryu's death and is reluctant to fight. Keep in mind that Yusei just received a surgery not long ago.
* ''Anime/YuGiOhZEXAL'': Kaito gives one to Yuma when he is begging him to help him go save Shingetsu.
* ''Manga/YuYuHakusho'':
** Keiko has a BSOD during Yusuke's fight with Toguro, imagining that the experience isn't happening, and that they are really back at school like normal. After the fight is over, she's still out, and, in a rush to wake her up, Yusuke slaps her repeatedly for half a minute, until she breaks out of it and knocks him to the floor.
** Yusuke has a BSOD during his ''own'' fight with Yomi, later on, and Yomi ''tries'' to give him one of these. Well, several. It's averted, though -- the beating isn't responsible for breaking him out of it.
* ''Anime/ZombieLandSaga'':Whoever the episode is centered on, it almost always comes with some form of angst, and someone has to intervene:
** Ai: Her traumatic HighVoltageDeath causes her to freak out in the middle of a thunderstorm, and it takes Junko taking her hand and comforting her to help her get over her death.
** Junko: Because of the era she was born in, Junko was expected to be perfect as an idol. It's not that her standards are high, it's because the idol industry and her fans expect her to. Kotaro openly tells her she doesn't have to interact with fans if she doesn't want to.
** Lily: Lily may be a CheerfulChild, but meeting her father years after her death affects the both of them, thanks to the issues both of them have surrounding it. It takes Sakura's comfort and Kotaro's willingness to write a song for her that Lily and her father are able to move on with their lives.
** Sakura: [[spoiler:Sakura has two whole episodes worth of angst, and it wasn't really her fault. Murphy's law gave her [[BornUnlucky really terrible luck since childhood]]. Just when she turns her life around due to Ai's comment about being determined, she gets hit by a truck. After regaining her memories, she immediately gives up on life and whereas Saki fails to slap some sense into her, Yugiri does it effectively and makes her point. After her successful concert outing, she regains her undead memories and overcomes her personal grief.]]
** Yugiri does this to anyone she thinks needs it, even if they don't. The one time it's needed though, was to Sakura in Episode 12, during her HeroicBSOD.
* ''VideoGame/ZoneOfTheEnders'':
** ''Dolores I'': The last fight between Dolores and Hathor is a big one to [[LoveMakesYouEvil Radium Lavans]] from James Link. He manages to funk it out of him, and in the end, [[RedemptionEqualsDeath Radium sacrifices himself for Earth]].
** When [[TykeBomb Rebecca]] tried to shoot him [[spoiler: the second time]] in Earth Orbital Elevator [[spoiler:(after he trying to save her, no less)]], James furiously snapped at her, verbally crushed her idea about her relationship with his "father", with [[GenkiGirl Dolores]] backed up in fear. [[spoiler:Considering that when she tried to shoot her the first time, he disarmed her using a simple psychological trick ("It's not loaded"), this is quite significant.]]
