Moments that put the "Funny" in "Strange. Funny. Heartrending." And sometimes, [[SurrealHumor "Strange" as well]].

[[AC:VideoGame/EarthBoundBeginnings]]
* In Ellay, a woman offers to buy Ninten a drink. Accepting results in [[SurprisinglyRealisticOutcome Ninten and friends getting arrested for underage drinking]].
* "Groucho said 'Hello,' then just walked away. Don't know why, but Ninten's EXP increased."
** Also from Magicant, the cat who swims on land.
** One of Queen Mary's guards asks for the answer to a riddle. Using Telepathy on him reveals the answer, and he reveals that he hadn't come up with a riddle yet.
* When talked to, Tom Garrickson introduces himself, then explains he did so because introducing himself is his hobby.
* When you CHECK an enemy, some of the comments are pretty hilarious, the [[BearsAreBadNews bear]] enemies, for example, their comments are references to ''Literature/{{Goldilocks}}'':
** '''Bear:''' OFFENSE 42, DEFENSE 64. Somebody ate his porridge, and he isn't too happy about it.
** '''Polar Bear:''' OFFENSE 52, DEFENSE 180. His chair was broken, and he isn't very happy!
** '''Grizzly Bear:''' OFFENSE 160, DEFENSE 340. If you must sleep, don't borrow his bed!
* Other kind of enemies also have pretty funny comments:
** '''Watcher:''' OFFENSE 16, DEFENSE 24. This enemy's face is the easiest to draw.
** '''Titanian:''' OFFENSE 100, DEFENSE 420. [[DemonicSpiders If you can beat it,]] [[LampshadeHanging this is great!]]
** '''Dust Ball:''' OFFENSE 40, DEFENSE 120. AHH-choooo!
** '''Crow:''' OFFENSE 8, DEFENSE 12. [[BanditMook Watch your wallet and count your change. He's a thief.]]
* Some of the enemy concepts are pretty funny, like the fact that one of the first enemies is just a hippie. Others just have names, like Wally or Juana, even if they ''aren't'' normal people.
* "Bear just grins and bears it."

[[AC:VideoGame/EarthBound1994]]
* Every single time the traveling photo man appears. "Say fuzzy pickles!"
** Not to mention the time when the photographer drops into Brick Road's first maze just after Jeff reads the sign warning "Watch out for falling objects".
* Unlike [[TheLoad his brother]], Picky at least ''tries'' to help in the fight against Starman Junior, even if he's only doing 1 HP worth of damage. There is, however, a [[https://twitter.com/DannyPageoLight/status/1594911437654491139?s=20&t=zH9J5d4CfvSJ782TcaEqhA chance]] of Picky getting a [[CriticalHit Smash attack]] in on the enemy...[[AntiClimax for still 1 HP worth of damage]].
* The mere fact that there are bug enemies in this game. No, not BigCreepyCrawlies, just regular-sized ants, roaches, slugs, and the like. They even show up on the overworld as just a couple of black pixels. The fact that, at the time of meeting them, [[LethalJokeCharacter they're actually a threat]] doesn't hurt the humor value any, and it becomes more hilarious when you get strong enough to one-shot these encounters (apparently Ness just realized he could step on them).
* The very fact you can dig around in garbage cans and eat food straight out of them.
* The Brick Road dungeon, and later Dungeon Man, for their constant lampshade hanging.
* The NPC in the Chaos Theater who tells you he farted.
* In Threed, after obtaining the Jar of Fly Honey, Apple Kid will call you that he had a pizza delivery man deliver "Zombie Paper" to you. Believing Apple Kid to be a weirdo, the pizza delivery man decides to give the Zombie Paper to some random kid and pretend they're Ness...but he doesn't realize the kid he chose actually is Ness.
* Some of the quotes are worth a good laugh:
-->You will be gone, and you'll be burning in... well, you'll go to heaven![[note]]In the original Japanese version, he says "Die and go to hell– No, to heaven!"[[/note]]
-->Blue, blue. You strange, unmasked fellow. Don't go to heaven![[note]]Contrary to popular belief, one of the cultists actually says "Don't go to heaven!" in the original Japanese version.[[/note]]
* If you want a good old-fashioned laugh, buy the house in Onett and check in the drawer.
* Mr Spoon attempting to get on stage with Venus, only to be dragged off by security.
* The dungeon of five giant moles who ''all'' tell you they're the third-strongest.
* Moonside. [[AcidTripDimension All of it]]. Of particular note is the museum keeper who's single-mindedly obsessed with bones.
-->'''Museum Curator:''' Do you know whose bones are on display here? The answer is... Your bones. My bones. [[BreadEggsBreadedEggs Bone's bones]]. [[OverlyLongGag Bone bone]] [[RuleOfThree bone]].
* If a Flying Man dies in Magicant they get a tombstone placed near their house. If all 5 of them die the tombstones read from first to last:
--> “Ness’s courage is resting here. He fought well and died.” \
“Another one of Ness’s courage is resting here. He damaged evil terribly, and finally died.” \
“Here he rests... I didn’t have time to have his name chiseled into the tombstone.”\
“Someone’s tombstone.” \
“Tombstone.” \

* A unique text thread if you try to throw away the pack of bubble gum.
--> ''Game'' "Don't spit out your gum. Even if it has lost its flavor!"

[[AC:VideoGame/MOTHER3]]
* The [[RunningGag doorknob]] of Flint's house comes off at the start of the game's first chapter, and continues to show up across the game, slipping out of the player's grasp each time.
* The present boxes that don't offer anything of value, not even a ChestMonster, can be a treat.
--> "Lucas opened the present." ''(Music plays)'' "You heard a mambo/reggae/waltz rhythm. Ah." \
"Lucas opened the present." ''(Fireworks go off)'' "There were fireworks inside. Ah." \
"Lucas opened the present." ''(The present box [[ToiletHumour farts]])'' "An indescribable smell lingers in the air."
* Every single sign ever.
--> '''Preserve our beautiful scenery! [[HypocriticalHumor Please refrain from posting signs.]]
* "No problem here... problem here."
* "Thank you for taking the time to read this sign. This sign loves you."
* If you go around and read the graves near the beginning of the game, there will be grave puns. Don't laugh too hard, however, because this takes place in a "grave" situation.
* At one point in Osohe Castle in Chapter 2, Duster is required to drop a heavy ball from a statue onto a cracked spot on the floor. Dashing into the statue from the opposite side will allow Duster to continue as normal. Dashing into it from the side of the cracked floor, on the other hand, [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AX8eiRa-wXU&t=14s causes Duster to get smooshed]], resulting in a GameOver.
* There's something hilarious about how Duster, who has a paralyzed leg, attacks by ''kicking.''
* The Magypsies. When you first hear about them, you learn that they are mystical beings who are "neither man nor woman". From this description, you might expect some androgynous [[TheFairFolk fae]]. Once you meet one... turns out they're flaming drag-queens. With facial hair. The music for their "palace" is a saucy saxophone riff.
* ''The [[RunningGag Rope Snake]].'' When you give an insignificant item that you use three times in the game emotions, HilarityEnsues.
** When the group leaves Saturn Valley via Rope Snake holding onto a bird cage, Boney has to hold onto Lucas' shorts, causing his bare butt to be on display.
* [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BXe0PIosILM Wess Dance!]] It's also possible to replace Wess in that scene with several other characters, but apart from Kumatora, they're not animated to do the dance, so they end up doing something weird. In particular, Lucas appears to be ''mooning'' the door.
** The best part is that this makes the door ''laugh'', allowing you through.
--->"Don't look, now! [[SuspiciouslySpecificDenial I'm not going to stick my butt out or anything like that, though.]]"
* At the end of Chapter 2, Kumatora accidentally triggers a trapdoor that sends herself, Duster, and Wess plummeting down a pit.
-->'''Wess''': PRINCESSSSSSSSS!!!\
'''Kumatora''': My bad.
* In Chapter 3, Wess, accidentally nudging the remote to Salsa's shock collar and Salsa straight-up ''lunging'' at it, stamping the pavement with it.
* "Okay... one... two... THREE! ''(Everyone runs away)'' ...Is when we run, got it? ''(Looks behind her)'' Oh. Damn. They're fast." ''(Runs away.)''
* [[ContinuityNod The Mischievous Mole felt]] [[VideoGame/EarthBound1994 homesick]]!
* The page quote for DirtyOldMan.
-->'''Mike:''' I can't keep burdening Lisa forever, but I do have a Happy Box and nice-bodied girls like Nan and Linda to keep me company, so I'm pretty happy in my own way. Nyahahahaha!\
'''Linda:''' I'm sorry, Mike, but that's called sexual harassment these days.\
'''Mike:''' ...This is a hard world we live in now. How disappointing.
* Talking to Nana, the girl by the beach. Before talking to her, she warns Lucas that everyone hates her for talking too much, and when you ignore her warnings, she goes of on a long talk about music and destiny, after which it cuts to black and back to the screen, where Lucas and Boney are dizzy from listening to her.
* On some occasions, either a lady or an old man will inexplicably appear in a hot spring. And they can appear ''anywhere.'' Even in the Chimera Lab, where only Pigmasks should have access. And what they say makes it funnier.
--> '''Old Man''': Yes?
--> '''Lady''': Cross gender bathing?
* When you find out the real difference between the green and regular trains: The green one gives you the the joy of riding a green-colored train. The other doesn't.
* Also, the scene in Chapter 4 where [[TeamPet Boney]] dresses up like a kid to get into the nightclub.
--> "Shake! ...Oh, sorry about that. I just get that instinct when I look at you..."
** Also great is when the bouncers reject Lucas and Boney, they walk away sad and dejected, only to immediately walk back with Boney in his PaperThinDisguise.
* [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gMGtIcn024k&feature=related Kumatora is rather... ''insistent'' that Lucas and Boney take a shower.]]
* Dashing across a littered BananaPeel always causes you to [[ThePratfall slip and fall]]. Yes, some enemies do the same in cutscenes. Yes, it also happens ''while you're in a floating vehicle''. You actually crash a Pork Bean this way.
* Some of the enemy Chimera designs are bizarre enough to be funny. Such as [[http://i43.tinypic.com/s46omg.gif the Ostrelephant]], and its entry in the [[MonsterCompendium Battle Memory]]:
-->"[[FridgeLogic Is the long part its trunk or its neck? How does it bathe itself?]] An utterly mysterious Chimera."
* The game rewards you for back-attacking enemies with a free round at the start of the fight while the enemy has to spend time to turn around. So of course the Mecha-Turtle pulls a fast one on players cultivating this habit by having cannons mounted on its back.
* "[[DiedStandingUp He's passed out.]]"
* [[FridgeHorror "Don't come back here. You'll kick up the mold spores."]]
* After you defeat the Forlorn Junk Man, a Pigmask arrives and hurriedly tells you to get in his Pork Bean. Once everyone is inside, he says that if anyone needs to use the bathroom, they just have to hold it in for now, which makes [[ToiletHumor Boney whine in response.]]
* The most depressed video game enemy in history, [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bPaLaKygHBo the Negative Man]]. A ZeroEffortBoss, Negative Man does almost nothing but moan and cry that he's going to lose. He actually can attack, but he does it so rarely that many players never see him attack at all. And even then, the attack is pathetically weak. It's funny in a BlackComedy kind of way.
* The Pigmask Guard asleep on duty at the start of Chapter 7. When the Masked Man arrives, his colleagues begin fervently saluting him, right in time for the asleep Guard to wake up and join them in a panicked manner.
* Roaming the highways in Chapter 7 ...on an animate coffee table. An animate coffee table shaped like a Mr. Saturn that whinnies like a horse.
* ''The Barrier Trio strikes one final Barrier Pose! -- It was [[SugarWiki/MomentOfAwesome spectacular]].''
** Them being statues with a penchant for posing may provoke comparisons to [[Manga/JojosBizarreAdventure The Pillar Men]].
* [[TalkingWithSigns "Your fly's open! XYZ!"]] Cue Lucas' [[LuminescentBlush reaction]], then...
** "You're much manlier now!"
** Potentially gets even funnier when you take into account that this sign appears near the very end of the game. [[FridgeLogic Exactly how long has Lucas' fly been open?]]
** Later in the next challenge: "Your fly's not open! Don't worry about it!"
* Any time you use an oxygen machine when you're underwater. Just so you know, the "oxygen machines" look like mermen with huge feminine lips. And they give you oxygen by kissing you. The whole party blushes in an embarrassed way when you're done.
** At the start of the area, two Pigmasks demonstrate how it's done. One is a little demoralized by the way they work, but the other admits to liking it. The first Pigmask wordlessly steps away from him.
** After a Pigmask destroys the tunnel from the Chimera Lab to Saturn Valley, the Mr. Saturns decide to make a flying birdcage as a mode of transportation for our heroes but needs one more bird. Afterward, several Mr. Saturns are seen holding hook-attached-balloons which they use for, as they put it, "fishing for birdies".
* The [[MetalSlime Mystery Metal Monkey]]. Defeating it gets you good experience. Literally.
-->'''Battle Memory entry:''' "It was a good experience!"
* In the [[{{ItMakesJustAsMuchSenseInContext}} flying limousine]] at the start of Chapter 8.
--> (''Upon examining row of liquor'') "Grownup drinks are lined up here. [[{{Anvilicious}} It's spicy, bitter, yucky poison, so kids can't drink it.]] Oh wait. Grownups can't drink it, either."
--> (''Upon examining tabletop game'') "A tabletop game. It looks like you can play it, but you can't.
--> (''Upon examining billiards table'') "A 9-foot billiard table. The pockets have been designed to be quite large. It looks like you can play it, but you can't."
--> (''Upon examining TabletopGame/{{blackjack}} table'' "A blackjack table. It's not a playable blackjack table, though."
--> (''Upon examining tower of champagne glasses'') "This is one of those famous champagne towers. Actually, upon closer inspection, it's only a painting."
** You should see what happens when they're relaxing on the (maybe) vibrating sofas.
---> (''Cue LuminescentBlush from entire group'') "What is this feeling?!"
* In the arcade in Chapter 8.
--> (''Upon examining one of the machines'') " 'Dance Dance Business Kimono'. What kind of game IS this?!"
* The ''toilet dungeon'' in the Empire Porky Building makes as much sense in context.
** And of course the Men's Room Sign enemy. Who inexplicably knows PK Starstorm.
** One particular toilet houses some treasure... :And the Ultimate Chimera. It's as startling as it is hilarious.
* A particularly amusing moment in the otherwise bleak endgame: Dr. Andonuts rolling Porky around in the Absolutely Safe Capsule.
* Another funny one happens at the very end, just before the world is destroyed for good. As the Nowhere Islands are ravaged by cataclysms, the Pigmask's Airship attempts to escape while the Pigmask's theme plays...and is struck down by a falling meteor, with [[LettingTheAirOutOfTheBand the music distorting and stopping]].
* [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nY7NUt0vX7M This clip]] is what happens when Claus opens the one present with a luxury banana in the Salsa chapter. The gift box swipes the luxury banana back, moves around, and eats it. Claus doesn't do anything about it (especially since he wasn't programmed to respond to an event like this).

[[AC:Series-wide]]
* Every time an enemy does an odd action during battle, an example being the New Age Retro Hippie who uses a ruler and can now measure the lengths of things more easily!
** While many of said actions are useless, there are the occasional few that are really weird AND have an effect, like taking the time to brush your teeth in-battle, making them so bright that they paralyze the target. Yep.
* Anything with the [[RidiculouslyCuteCritter Mr. Saturns]], really. Zoom!
