* So the character designer was told to keep ''Anime/PuellaMagiMadokaMagica'' in mind when designing the Intoners. It makes sense that Two, who appears to be based off of Sayaka's design, gets consumed by her song in every route.
** Similarly, Five is likely based on Mami due to having blond hair and the biggest bust. She's also the first Intoner to die, similar to how Mami is the first Magic Girl to be killed off.
** Zero oddly has elements from a few Magical Girls. She largely has Kyoko's BloodKnight, AxCrazy, LadySwearsALot, and {{Jerkass}} attitude and is the TokenEvilTeammate of the main female characters. She doesn't have the color scheme, though, which comes more from Homura, and her Intoner Mode is a bright pink, making her look very much like Madoka.
** Three is notably based off of Homura in color scheme, but is completely unlike her in personality. That is, until you realize that Three is rather pragmatic and utilizes her Song (and later, the Flower) the most optimally out of the Intoners without going insane, much like Homura with her time powers and the truth behind magical girls.
** One's color scheme is borrowed by Kyubey of all people! One is the only sibling to have a backup plan should she die, and she knows the whole truth about the setting.
* Zero's treatment of Mikhail is abusive, yes, but it does make sense when you realize that Zero herself had a AbusiveParent, but actually did not hate them for it and sympathized with her mother. As a result, Zero is treating Mikhail the way she was treated because it seems normal to her.
* Why does Zero murder her way through soldiers with such apathy? Because these soldiers are dependent on their Intoners' songs to function. Later levels show these men becoming mindless soldiers as they suffer the withdrawal symptoms from loss of contact with their respective intoner. Affiliating themselves with the Intoners has doomed them, whether it be by Zero's blade, the inevitable withdrawal of their Intoner's song, or should Zero fail, the end of the world.
* The Intoners being weak against Dragon related weapons, or a Dragon itself, seems odd until you reach Branch D where it's revealed that the Intoners are actually Grotesquerie Queens, which, as established by the first game, can only be killed by Dragons.
* As noted on the character page, despite the fact that each Intoner already embodies {{Lust}}, they all embody another of the seven deadly sins as well. Instead of simply embodying just the sin itself, they also have it tie into Lust as well. For more detail:
** One represents Pride. She's the second oldest, the most knowledgeable of the sisters, and the most powerful besides Zero. Her DLC reveals she was intending to die last if she could help it as well. She's also, in a sense, so prideful that she cannot trust anyone but an OppositeSexClone of herself. Lust comes into play in that she makes Male One her disciple, and while she tries not to, she eventually uses him for sex. So you could say she's so prideful, she only sleeps with herself.
** Two represents Gluttony. It doesn't seem to quite fit her at first, until the meaning of it (over-indulgence and consumption) are taken in a different sense than just food. Her beloved Cent indulged her in everything, from sensual love to preventing her worries. However, it takes a turn for the worst when her powers go out of control, consuming everything precious in her life, such as her subjects and the war orphans she loved like family. In the end, even her own blithe spirit was consumed by guilt and depression.
** Three represents Sloth. She's lazy and cares little about things like sex, only doing whatever minimum she can in order to have her urges quenched. However, people associated with Sloth tend to actually be very skilled at their area of expertise when they get motivated, or take a interest, and Three is intelligent and loves experimenting on things. To an extent, Three's Lust is based around her own creations and experiments instead of sexual lust like the other Intoners. This can be seen in her DLC when something peaks her interest, and she becomes almost consumed by pleasure at the thought of getting it.
** Four represents Envy. She's jealous of all of her sisters in some way, ranging from sex life, to hair, and due to this feels she has to stand out in some way. So she refuses to indulge in sex [[InferioritySuperiorityComplex because]] she ''needs'' something to be all self-righteous about.
** Five represents Greed. Her DLC shows her wanting everything, including wanting to hog and take Dito, all for herself.
** Zero represents Wrath. She takes her sisters' disciples by force and builds a harem, and its noted that Zero is quite rambunctious.
* Two, who wears a flower in her hair, is the one whose mind is always consumed or broken as a result of her powers.
* Branch D, while it's definitely a route where everything goes to hell, a bunch of things also go right for Zero and allows this branch to be successful in eliminating the Flower, after the few, but fatal mistakes of past timelines.
** Two is dead at the start of the Branch. The Flower cannot take advantage her immense powers, which it used to kill One and Three in Branch B (One wants to eliminate the Flower and Intoners, while Three has the best control over it) and to devolve Mikhail to be too weak to fight off Gabriel in Branch C.
** Cent has his memories of Two intact. While Accord likely wiped his memories because of the hassle he put on her to essentially mercy kill Two and test her worth, that backfired horribly in Branches B and C because he abandons Two, who then goes crazy or is consumed by the flower. He also confronts his failures as a Disciple despite his love for Two, allowing him to be helpful to Zero and accept his death.
** Zero understands the relationship between the Flower and Dragons. She feeds the Flower-corrupted corpse of Four to Mikhail as it's in the dragon's instinct to "devour the Flower", or in other words, eat Intoners like he did with Three in Branch A. With Four consumed, he evolves to his ultimate form and ensures he's strong enough to withstand the Flower's power, unlike what happened in Branch C.
** Accord develops an attachment to Zero and a determination to make the route successful after so many failed attempts. Without that, she wouldn't have dared hold off an extremely powerful One nor request for an intervention into the timeline so that Zero can kill her.
* The numbered names of the Intoners can be interpreted in a few interesting ways.
** Zero's goal is to kill all of the Intoners and then herself. Also, her fate is closely tied to that of Mikhail, who, having reincarnated from Michael, can be seen as starting from 'zero'.
*** Also related to it, Zero is the only number that no matter how much you multiply, it will always be Zero.
** In addition to her obvious pride, One clones herself, and her 'brother' takes her name after dying. So there's only ever one One.
** Two, as mentioned above, is a glutton for love. Her SanitySlippage results from being isolated (having to kill her adoptive children and being wiped from Cent's memories).
** Three, the MadScientist, is named for a number which has a lot of significance in mathematics (approximately the value of pi, the first of several different types of prime numbers, the noblest Pythagorean digit, etc). Four also considers her to be blessed (a la 'lucky number three') with the best looks of the Intoners.
** Four, who has a serious inferiority complex, is named for an unlucky number in Japan. She sees herself as being below One (first place) in brains, Two (second place) in likeability, and Three (third place) in beauty. And the Roman numeral four denotes a subgiant, stars that are brighter than a dwarf -- mirroring her hatred of Five -- but dimmer than the stars that correspond to her older sisters' names. (Recall that Madoka Magica, which influenced their designs, had a bunch of astrological symbolism.)
** Five, who has the highest numbered name, wants everything in excess. The Roman numeral five also denotes a main sequence, or dwarf star; yellow dwarf stars burn brightly, but have a shorter lifespan -- and she's the first sister Zero kills.
* The Disciples have characteristics opposite to those of their Intoners. Two is physically very strong, but tries to be gentle; Cent is an idiot who tries to appear smart (although it turns out that Cent is much smarter than what he lets on; after the accident with the orphans, Two's power grew out of control until it consumed her, while Cent suppressed his smarts to dull his guilt). Three is an asexual who loves her job; Octa is a DirtyOldMan who would sleep with anything. Four is envious of her sisters, and wants to lord over them; Decadus is a masochist who loves being bossed around. Five is greedy (she loves to have things); Dito is cruel (he loves to destroy things).
** And Mikhail is the TechnicalPacifist to Zero's AxCrazy.
** You could find a new layer of FridgeBrilliance in the way the Disciples are named. Decadus' name, when given the numerical value of the word closest to his, which would be Ten, makes him, the most reserved Disciple, the opposite of Five, who is without restraint. Octa, whose name can be a reference to Eight, since Oct- is the root word for that number, makes him correspond to Four in numerical terms. While Four is the sole virgin Intoner, Octa is the total opposite of her in this single regard. Dito, whose name is very likely a reference to the number Two (Di = Two), corresponds with Two in that he revels in causing death and carnage, while Two doesn't enjoy conflict, preferring to nurture life if possible. Cent, whose name is very likely a reference to One, as his name is a singular word, may allude to him being a self-proclaimed idiot, whereas One is often regarded as the wisest Intoner. As for Brother! One, the only Intoner left he could correspond to is Three. As revealed in his novella, he created the symbol for the Cult of the Watchers from the first game. Now how many eyes are seen on the face of that particular symbol?
** Additionally, One is arguably the most important Intoner, which feeds her pride. Meanwhile, her brother-clone is a complete secret, and unquestioningly accepts his role as One's underling.
* Most of the Angels are connected to the ones who summon them:
** Phanuel: It's connected to the giant crab seen in Five's Prologue DLC. Five got the crab's treasure and flesh. Dito became enthusiastic of the prospect of seeing the "festering corpse" of said crab. They both got said remains in this Angel.
** Armaros: It's a fortress that traps enemies and leads them into deadly sawblade traps, a parallel to Four's pure exterior and nasty interior. Said traps are also located near the weak points of the fortress, which fits Decadus's masochism.
** Armisael: Creepy dolls. Three treats her subjects like toys, or as resources for her experiments. You could also say that their feminine appearance leads back to Octa, but you must consider that Three forced him to call this Angel, so it's actually a mockery of his idea of love.
** Egregori: Two water giants that collaborate with each other. They're the least threatening Angel, just as Two is the most moral one at least until she goes insane.
** Gabriel: A Daemon Dragon. Consider that One's closest followers are a now mindless Dragon, a servile Disciple who is also a clone of her, and a team of Golems. They are all her servants, all under her rule.
** Galgaliel: An army of immortal soldiers that will stay with Five forever. Dito loves it, and returns to Five upon seeing her zombified state; ironically, Five got Dito back, albeit in a way she surely didn't want.
** Zophiel: A Daemon Dragon, which is a reskin of Gabriel. Four is envious of all of her sisters, including One, so she probably copied her.
** Ezrael: A Daemon Wyrm. If you notice, he doesn't properly fly; he just floats and teleports. Ironically, you have to slow him down to defeat it.
*** Plus, Three is the only Intoner who doesn't directly fight you, relying entirely on her Angels...except during the boss fight in Chapter 0 where all the Intoners except One fight Zero.
** Raphael: Two and Cent summoned the Angel when they were dying, while proclaiming they'll be together forever. Raphael forces you to stay with it in a dome that's quickly filling itself with poison, just like Two's love was twisted into something disastrous.
** Abdiel: Three Golems. Not only is it a CallForward to Seere and his Golem, the three Angel Golems share a single core. In contrast to the numerous Armisael and Galgaliel, and the Egregori couple, Abdiel is really just... One.
* Zero and One have extremely similar color schemes: white-and-black outfits with only a bit of pink (for Zero) and red (for One), which is harder to distinguish than the colors of the other Intoners. Why? Because Zero is the oldest sister, and the prideful One has replaced her, presenting herself as the lead Intoner to the rest of the world. She even plans to eliminate the Flower (which contains traces of both their colors) like Zero, but trusts only herself (Brother One) to finish kill the victor while Zero trusts Mikhail to do it.
* Thanks to the prequel manga ''Utahime Five'' it showed us what the previous rulers were like and frankly [[AssholeVictim it's a good thing One wanted to get rid of them]]. It also reveals that surprisingly One was actually the oldest looking Intoner until she sacrificed her mature appearance to what she looks like in the main game to save Gabriella by forging a "Pact" with her.
** This therefore means that if either One or Gabriel dies, then so does the other. Which means in Ending A, One was already dying before Zero kills her as Zero had just killed Gabriel. This also means Gabriel was not killed by Mikhail's attack in Branch C because One would not have been able to fight if he did.
*** Although another theory is that the transformation into a Daemon acts as a one-sided pact. That would explain why [=Gabriella/Gabriel=] reaps both the benefits (Gabriel is much stronger than Gabriella) and the drawbacks (he dies the instant One dies) of a normal pact, while One still lives on if Gabriel is the one killed.
* If the Accord [[spoiler: robots]] are the recorders, who are they recording for? It's obvious. What do you do with a recording? You watch it. The Watchers aren't gods at all, but people from the past who are manipulating the future to their own ends, similar to [[Literature/TheShadowOutOfTime The Shadow Out of Time]].
* In the opening, the Intoners are drawn like angels. Thing is, ''Biblical'' angels weren't always [[GoodIsNotNice nice]], as we would define the word. It was an angel who annihilated Sodom and Gomorrah because they had sunk too far into sin to be saved. Just as Zero annihilates the Intoners and everyone who heard [[MindVirus their singing]], in order to cleanse the world and prevent further 'infection'.
* How ''did'' Two summon Raphael without singing? Well, killing an Intoner makes their power flow into all the others. Two had just killed One, who is stronger than the other Intoners and has enough power (as seen in other routes) to summon an Angel silently.
* Pacts usually sacrifice whatever the person making it values the most. Does One really care about looking mature that mu- oh, right, {{Pride}}.
* Why is Song Magic so closely tied to sex? Because it comes from one gigantic (F)lower, and flowers are the ''reproductive'' structures of plants. They have no other instinct or reason for existing than to propagate themselves. It makes sense that if a flower took over a person's brain, sex would be all that that person could think about. This interpretation may also explain why the Intoners were so eager to spread out and colonize the continent.
* When you think about it, Drakengard 3 is actually both a remake and antithesis of Drakengard 2, which Yoko Taro did not have involvement with. Both games have a similar plot structure of your characters traveling through 5 areas, ruled over by a guardian/intoner, who is battled in an epic boss fight where they summon their pact partner/angel to fight you, but nearly all of the details of the story are flipped and mirrored between the two games. 2 is a sequel, 3 is a prequel. The villains in 2, the Knights of the Seal, are a corrupt organization exploiting the people for their own benefit, while the Intoners in 3 come off as benevolent saviors who freed the people from the tyrannical rulers of the past. Nowe's companions join him of their own will, while Zero basically enslaves the companions of her Intoner sisters. In 2, Nowe and Manah believe they are doing the right thing but their actions ultimately lead to the world nearly being destroyed, while in 3 Zero's actions appear to be villainous and selfish but are ultimately in the world's best interest. Legna, the dragon partner in 2, is an old and wise dragon who gives Nowe advice and support throughout their journey, while Mikhael, the dragon partner of 3, is a young, naive, silly dragon who is mostly comic relief and has to be taken care of like a child by his partner. And for the protagonists; Nowe is a young, naïve, idealistic teen boy who genuinely wants to do good and help the people, and is ultimately revealed to be a human/dragon hybrid predicted to save the world, while Zero is a violent, cynical, hedonistic adult woman out to kill her sisters out of personal guilt and a feeling of responsibility for their creation, and is revealed to be a human/grotesquerie hybrid who will eventually threaten the world if she isn't put down.
* The sisters can be considered in-jokes about the series installments that correspond to their number.
** One is the only sister connected to the events of ''Drakengard 1''; specifically, Manah's cult. That game revolves around fanaticism and incredibly destructive attempts at heroism, much as One's arc does.
** Two is incongruously idealistic, and so is ''Drakengard 2'' compared to the other installments.
** Three is highly knowledgeable and obsessed with "dolls", appropriate for a game that's lore-heavy and has a plot in which robots (and brainwashed human 'toys') play a vital role.
* Four, the most mentally unstable of all of the Intoners, is the only one whose roman numeral is asymmetrical.

* In Ending C, Zero starts vomiting uncontrollably and having weird mood shifts. Considering that she's gonna turn into a Grotesquerie Queen pretty soon at that point, this makes perfect, horrible sense.
** Considering that the Queen Beast also gave birth to hundreds of grotesqueries, and Zero's hypersexual nature, it could also ominously point to a sort of darkly magical MorningSickness before she turns.
* In Ending B, Zero invokes some unseen pact with the Flower to revive Mikhail. When he wakes up, ''he'' has the Flower in his eye socket. So it's possible that the Grotesquerie Queen will be immune to the one thing that could previously kill it (thank god for Ending D).
** According to Accord, Mikhail is containing the flower on his own, so there is no problem in the current situation. Now, if that situation were to be changed...
** Does that mean there's an alternate universe out there where the other dragons alive (Angelus, Legna, etc) fought to take down Flower!Mikhail? Because that sounds ''awesome''!
* Two has to actively remember to control her SuperStrength, and tends to rip off door handles when she forgets. She's lucky she never lost control while in bed with [[LoveInterest Cent]]…
