* There are lots of references to the nativity and Christianity. The pregnancy is revealed in a barn surrounded by animals. Theo's name means "God." He says "Jesus Christ!" when first seeing Kee's pregnancy. He wears sandals for half the film and is shown soaking his feet. Kee pranks him for a minute by saying that she's carrying a virgin pregnancy.
* People are unusually fixated on pets, which have obviously become child surrogates in a world without children. There's even an advertisement for pet clothes furnished by a GAP {{Expy}}.
* In the battle of Bexhill, one thing to notice about the British Army troops is that most of them appear older (thirties and forties) than one would expect from frontline combat troops. There aren't enough young people being born to replenish the ranks.
* A number of middle-aged people are shown with prominent tattoos and piercings, and the elderly Jasper loves wild techno music, establishing for a 2006 audience that people who follow then-current trends will all be 20 years older by the time the film takes place.

* The ending mixes BittersweetEnding with EsotericHappyEnding and LeftHanging. Kee seems to be safe, but we have no idea whether her pregnancy will save the human race, or if Theo has truly died. We also don't know how arduous the process will be of discovering what about her allowed her to get pregnant and whether it can be replicated. It's ultimately left to the viewer, though the sound of children laughing over the credits suggests a happy result.
* Theo is at a bar watching football (soccer) and while we don't see it, the snippet of sound is quite underwhelming. Theo goes to the dog track. Wouldn't the standard of sport even decline? The players 'now' are the last generation, and eventually all the players will be too old in any sport to do it. What's the point in holding the Olympics? If there's even any countries left to partake? Hence why dog racing is popular. So as real sport with humans declines, animal sport takes off. Poor animals.
