!! FridgeBrilliance
* The fact that no one knows Sebastian's sexual orientation, and that there is both evidence for and against virtually any orientation one can think of, has a very simple explanation. He's a [[EldritchAbomination demon]]. He has no gender or need for physical reproduction, and thus it wouldn't make sense for him to be sexually attracted to ''anyone'', really (and even if he were, it wouldn't make sense for the human concept of gender to factor into the attraction of a supernatural being that was never human).
* Why did the fortune teller know that Sebastian wasn't human, although said fortune teller was a scam? [[spoiler: The 'star types' he sees when drawing blood, are blood groups. Sebastian isn't human, so it would be logical for him to have abnormal blood]].
** Knowing this, it is quite reasonable to have him sent away. [[spoiler: Sebastian is a ''demon''. He has demon blood, different from human's, and they saw him as dangerous. So the 'If you don't have protection of a star, we send you out' is more like 'If you don't have human blood, you're probably [[EldritchAbomination something else]] and we don't want that']].
* Elizabeth's mother Frances knows that Ciel will protect [[DamselInDistress Elizabeth]] at all costs, but she also realizes that Ciel is [[DistressedDude not all that skilled in combat]]. Why was she so sure of her daughter's survival? [[spoiler: Because her [[DeliberatelyDistressedDamsel daughter]] is just as [[LittleMissBadass skilled]] in [[DualWielding swordsmanship]] as the rest of her [[BadassFamily family]] and thereby is perfectly capable of handling herself.]]
** Also, the fact that [[spoiler: Lizzie hid her LadyOfWar side due to fearing he'd see her as [[NoGuyWantsAnAmazon "uncute" or "brash"]] ]]? Makes more sense when you recall this ''is'' UsefulNotes/VictorianBritain. [[spoiler:Putting the real Ciel saying "strong women are scary" aside, a girl or woman of her family's rank and wealth who didn't behave like a ProperLady would be ostracized by most of her social class.]]
** Lizzie is also a 13 year old girly girl, she a child who enjoys cand girly pursuits. She has to both be a badass which is something she doesn’t always want to be. So naturally when she’s around Ciel she gets to be the child she is. She also wants to make Ciel happy and believes being happy and silly around him will help her reach that goal.
* Why does Claude Faustus wear glasses? Because he has "four eyes." Most spiders have four eyes.
** Most spiders have eight eyes, actually.
** Also, Sebastian wears glasses occasionally so I doubt it’s symbolic.
* Ciel and Lizzie have always been perfect [[{{foil}} foils]] to each other, both before and after the reveal that [[spoiler: Lizzie is an excellent swordswoman.]] Her introduction shows how utterly spoiled and childish she was, despite being a year older than Ciel because she ''is'' a normal noble child, while he is more reserved and mature as a result of his past trauma and his new responsibilities as a noble. Bonus points since while acting much younger than she is made Lizzie and little more than an annoying child to Ciel and the audience out of universe, ''Ciel'' is seen the same way by some of the people he works with in universe because he keeps acting much older than he really is. After the reveal [[spoiler: she is the [[ActionGirl gifted]] [[LadyOfWar swordswoman]] [[ThePowerOfLove driven]] by [[LoveMakesYouDumb love]] to act as [[LoveMartyr something she isn't]] for the sake of her future with Ciel, while he is a [[NonActionGuy young]] [[TheChessmaster chessmaster]] [[ThePowerOfHate driven]] by [[BeingTorturedMakesYouEvil hate]] to try and [[LoveMakesYouEvil avenge his family]] while giving up his future in the process.]]
* At the end of the murder mystery arc, Wordsmith [[spoiler: learned the truth about Sebastian because Ciel likes his mystery novels, and because writers often are inspired to write more if they have a strange/intense/mysterious/life-changing experience.]] During the arc, at one point he thinks about how Ciel reminds him of his teacher (Arthur Conan Doyle based Sherlock Holmes's deductive skills after the skills of the man who taught him to be a doctor). Jeremy[[spoiler: /Sebastian also makes deductions and observations in a way very similar to how Sherlock Holmes did in the original novels. Also, he uses an outstanding disguise: Sherlock Holmes was a master of disguise. So the Sherlock Holmes expy-arc made Sherlock Holmes into an expy of Ciel and Sebastian.]]
** Speaking of that same arc, while most readers probably guessed that [[spoiler: Jeremy was Sebastian in disguise]], the fact that [[spoiler: Sebastian is still alive]] receives some excellent foreshadowing when Ciel is shouting at [[spoiler: his body. That "stop playing around and get off the floor" speech is the same one he gave waaay back when Sebastian was shot while rescuing him from the mafia (and given how many bullet holes were in him, a poker through the chest is nothing by comparison).]]
** Fun fact: later in life, Arthur Conan Doyle publicly became [[spoiler: a firm believer in the existence of the supernatural, specifically psychics, fairies, and spiritualism. All throughout the explanation Ciel and Sebastian give him, not once do either of them refer to Sebastian as a demon, instead saying "not human." Without confirmation of Sebastian's exact nature, it seems that in-universe Arthur would have drawn his own conclusions. Furthermore, the ending shows that Arthur only felt safe writing down the truth years later when he had a daughter, which aligns with when he started being more open about his beliefs. So in-universe Arthur's experiences led him to believe firmly in the existence of supernatural forces, but fear kept him from admitting anything about the subject for decades. Furthermore, having seen for himself proof of malevolent supernatural powers, he was probably frightened and desperate for proof of benign psychics, fairies and spirits to counter the malevolent ones.]]
** Especially considering what people in-universe know of Ciels backstory, Arthur could have [[spoiler: mistaken him for a changeling or one of the older fey.]]
* Again during the murder mystery arc, Phelps seems to recognize Lau and even looks afraid of him. Phelps works in international trading, as does Lau. Once we learn that [[spoiler: Ciel planned out each murder from the start]], it becomes more likely that [[spoiler: Ciel had Phelps killed because Lau wanted him out of the way.]] Although [[spoiler: Snake's]] involvement surprised everyone, one has to remember that [[spoiler: Sebastian]] went to Phelps' room for no apparent reason, and then it seems like [[spoiler: Ciel's "explanation" of Phelps being killed accidentally via an attempt on Ciel's life]] makes one wonder if [[spoiler: Sebastian]] had gone to that room to [[spoiler: kill Phelps,]] and pleasantly found the job already done.
*** Sebastian did not go into Phelp's room for no apparent reason - he entered because he heard [[spoiler: the slithering of a snake, so he went to look, simply ignoring Phelps on the floor]].
** Earl Grey got to help with Ciel's mission, but [[spoiler: the only death]] he's directly involved in is [[spoiler: Siemens,]] so everybody else who [[spoiler: died wasn't on the Queen's hit-list.]]
* In the circus arc, Bard uses a brand-new gun, fresh from the factories. When it jams, he mentions that he'll have to tell Ciel "not to ship this one out just yet." Remember how [[spoiler: Woodley]] turned out to be a weapons dealer? Considering how big Funtom company is, it suddenly seems very likely that Ciel uses some of his company as a front for a weapons-manufacturing business, and that [[spoiler: Woodley]] is one of the middle-men he frequently does business with. Remember, when Ciel explained why [[spoiler: Woodley deserved to be arrested,]] he said it was because he used his power in the underworld to kill off an honest competitor. He didn't have a problem with the actual weapons dealing.
* Maurice Cole is a literal GreenEyedMonster with his green eyes.
* Lizzie having enough strength to break Ciel's ring makes sense. [[spoiler: She has been trained in swordsmanship since she was a child so she must have strong arms and hands.]]
* Mix of FridgeBrilliance and FridgeHorror, but [[spoiler: Derrick biting Greenhill]] is really meaningful. Considering that Greenhill was [[spoiler:the one who delivered the killer blow, that the bite was in Greenhill's good arm, and that Derrick was one of the most perfect bizarre dolls, is very possible that [[BestServedCold he was fully aware of what he was doing.]]]]
* Many of the first-stringers from Noah's Ark Circus have some sort of disability or deformity, but we're never told what Peter and Wendy have. But looking back on the flashbacks, we can see that they're about the same size as they are in present (compared to everyone else, who have all clearly grown). Peter also has a surprisingly mature voice for someone of his stature. This makes it seem very likely that they have some sort of growth disorder. This also explains where they might have gotten their names: from the story of Peter Pan, the boy who never grew up.
* The P4 becoming a boy-band makes sense because of their collective desire to make something "perfect" and their history of being loved for their position, two things a cult leader could easily exploit. However it seems strange to have Ciel's "Phantom Five" made up of the P4's former fags, as Ciel doesn't know many of them very well and contacting them on short notice would be difficult. However the P4's fags are also some of the only ones who know what REALLY happened to Derrik, so they don't trust the P4 already, and all of them know that Ciel is more than he seems, but have only seen him in a good light (exposing the truth and working for the Queen). Instead of hiring a bunch of professional teenage singers who are strangers, Ciel chose to hire people who he could inform about the potential danger of going up against a cult of unknown power, and who would trust him and work hard because they know that this is far more than a simple job.
* In the ImageSong sets, Soma and Agni both have the same song on their albums, "Futari no Harmony". Although both very good songs in their own right, something seems… off about the solo versions, such as [[https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Fy8plCZE8lc Soma]] singing high and [[https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=gw2SSWy2e60 Agni]] singing low along with strange periods of instrumentals and both characters seeming to provide backup vocals, but this is all cleared up when you realize that they're actually supposed to be played side-by-side to form [[https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=xQ2lyUZedac a duet]], therefore balancing each other out and filling the gaps.
* Chapter 129 and its revealing of [[spoiler: another Ciel]] was published in June, during the months where the ''Gemini'' constellation was more present.
* In the Murder Mystery arc, we see a brief flashback of what is presumably Sebastian teaching a newly hired Finny and Mey-Rin how to read and write. In the Green Witch arc, we also come to the discovery that Finny can speak German. While it may have been a while, the discovery that he knows this indicates that he may have originally been German, and simply doesn't remember his time as a youth. This means that, in addition to teaching him how to read and write English, Sebastian may have also been teaching Finny how to ''speak'' in English as well.
* Chapter 62 has an interesting moment in the flashback from just after Sebastian saved Ciel from the cult, which has a freed Ciel vowing "as Ciel Phantomhive, head of the Phantomhive household", not to lose his life as his predecessor did. Sebastian snickers at him and comments cryptically on Ciel being a liar, which [[DeathGlare visibly angers]] Ciel. This takes on new light after [[spoiler:the reveal that the "Ciel" we know who made that promise was actually the real Ciel's twin brother after "the spare" committed to taking his dead brother's place. Sebastian was amused by his new master lying about his identity and probably [[KickTheDog darkly amused by Our Ciel losing his own sense of identity]] (especially after Sebastian had convinced Our Ciel that it was his own fault that his brother's soul had been eaten). Our Ciel reacted so strongly because Sebastian was teasing him about the fact that ''he'' knows Our Ciel isn't really Ciel]].

!! FridgeHorror
* Undertaker describes Wonderland as being "A realm between life and death". Given this, and the ending of the Ciel in Wonderland OVA where [[spoiler: it is revealed Sebastian is reading the Wonderland story to Ciel's unconscious body]], it is highly like that [[spoiler: "Wonderland" is actually purgatory. Ciel, being quite literally between life in death as this presumably takes place between seasons one and two, is being tested for his sins and remeeting distorted versions of people he knew (And usually wronged) throughout his life.]]
* FridgeHorror: Sebastian's weapon of choice for killing lots and lots of people? The silverware. What does Ciel and his guests eat off of? That same silverware.
** I'd presume Sebastian cleans it after killing people with it.
*** It's still creepy!
*** Even better since Ciel willingly eats (and has his guests eat) with most likely that very silverware.
*** Could be an intimidation tactic, actually.
*** The guests typically don't know that Sebastian uses the silverware as weapons or that they're used for murder in general.
* ''Manga/BlackButler'' has plenty of Fridge Horror, considering the whole series is devoted to tortured little boys summoning demons for revenge.
** The most notable happens in the second season, considering Alois' whole life is a bit of Fridge Horror. [[spoiler: After his little brother and entire village are killed, this already slightly off boy (who laughed cheerfully as he robbed the dead) begins living as a true city street rat. Knowing how things like that work out, and especially after seeing his reactions to things later on, it's quite obvious that this young boy solicited himself for food or shelter before he even hit a double digit age.]]
*** Think about this: [[spoiler: Jim is only around 11 when he goes to Earl Trancy's manor. There, he living with a bunch of boys in the same condition, being bathed and treated like cattle, all while being a sex slave to an old man. At the age of 11. It's quite obvious even then he is not a virgin, as he dolls up and puts on a beautiful red robe, seducing the old man expertly until the guy's kissing his feet. He even becomes the favorite boy, taking place for the man's son who vanished as a baby - the real Alois Trancy - which allows him to take the name Alois after Claude kills the Earl.]]
*** Speaking of, [[TheUnreveal just what did happen to the ''real'' Alois Trancy?]]
** Eepisode 8 shows that Alois was raped by the former Lord Trancy. It's implied that this helped make him so AxCrazy — he's shown to have been a little off-kilter even before the event, having joked about his entire village dying and happily looted their corpses when they actually did, but his violent tendencies seem to date from it, not to mention his compulsive promiscuity.
** It's also quite likely that Arnold Trancy knew of his brother's "hobby", and said nothing of it, whether he himself has the same interests. After all, Arnold seems to be pretty sure that [[spoiler: Alois isn't the real Alois,]] and not just because he's a greedy bastard. Maybe he'd be able to somehow prove this, if only he [[spoiler: didn't have to hide that his brother was a pedophile with a harem of young boys in the basement before his death...]]
** Alois is often seen abusing poor Hannah the maid during the series. This becomes a little more of a Fridge Tear Jerker (depending on how sappy you are) when you realize that [[spoiler:the whole time this abuse is happening, Luka - Alois/Jim's beloved little brother - is living inside Hannah as a soul. Hannah says that Luka is "sleeping", but there can still be questioning on how aware Luka is of what's happening.]]
** Finny's vague past as a whole. [[spoiler: Scientific experimentation back then was horrible enough on animals. Now imagine it being done to a cute, innocent child. And if anyone's familiar with some of the newer sci-fi movies with the same theme of experimentation, there are other terrible tests involved...]]
** In episode 8, [[spoiler: after Claude so cruelly kills Alois and leaves his body in the woods, a rather tattered and beaten Hannah - whom we just learned is a demon - emerges from the woods, and lays over Alois' body. She calls him her master affectionately, and puts her lips to his eyes, and glowing occurs. At first, many fans believed her to be apologizing to him or mourning, bringing him back to life, or turning him into a demon. Not so. She ate his eye, and kept it in her throat until episode 11. She uses it to scare the hell out of Ciel, allowing Alois' soul to take over. And then, it replaces the eye that Alois gouged out of her. Lovely.]]
** Speaking of eyes, we realize one reason the contract mark might be on Ciel's eye during the manga's circus arc. [[spoiler: Right before Ciel summons Sebastian for the first time while in the cult, a member stabs him in the eye. You have to look close to realize that's what he stabbed, but, indeed it is. Perhaps putting the mark there also regenerates the missing part, as well as provides for better tracking?]]
*** In the manga, Sebastian says that "the more visible of a place the contract sign is, the more powerful the contract is". Hence he picked a very visible part (next to your skin, what is more visible than your eyes?) to signify the contract and making it strong.
*** [[spoiler: If this is so, and also applies to the anime, by the end of ''Black Butler II'' Ciel Phantomhive has 'died' around three times.]]
* Perhaps fridge horror or fridge logic depending on how you feel about Ciel's revenge, but considering angels, from what we know, are immortal and cannot be truly killed (Perhaps put into a different psychical form), that would mean in season one of the anime [[spoiler: Ciel's "fulfillment" of his revenge is entirely impossible and fruitless]], given Ash/Angela may or may not come back again.
* In season 1, episode 17, when [[spoiler: Angela kidnaps Ciel, she uses a cinematic record as a weapon. Grell takes her scissors and proceeds to destroy said cinematic record. Somewhere in the world, someone is suddenly dying or becoming crazy and nobody knows why.]]
* In episode 12 of Black Butler II, Sebastian is to be [[spoiler: Ciel's butler forever. If eternal servitude wasn't enough, think about this: Sebastian will be starving the whole time.]] A demon cannot consume another demon's soul, [[spoiler: and Sebastian is unable to make a contract with another mortal due to being eternally bound to Ciel. The only way he will be able to eat again is by breaking the [[TheOathBreaker demons' aesthetic]], unless that code is [[MagicallyBindingContract magically binding]], in which case, Sebastian is royally screwed. ]]
** In both the manga and the anime, though, [[spoiler: it's mentioned that demons can consume the souls of those to whom they are not contracted. Contracted souls are just, well, tastier. So Sebastian could eat other souls if he was in danger of starvation.]]
* What exactly did Ciel do to “open up a spot” at Weston? Considering that he later considers having Clayton ''killed'' just so he can take his place as Lawrence’s fag, who is to say that he didn’t have the father of one of the students assassinated just to get into the school?
* So we know that during the Murder Mystery Arc [[spoiler: Snake]] attempted to kill [[spoiler: Ciel]]. But [[spoiler: he]] did so when all [[spoiler: he]] knew was that [[spoiler: his circus friends disappeared shortly after Ciel and Sebastian also did]]. While [[spoiler: his]] suspicions were correct, [[spoiler: Snake]] had no confirmation and no evidence, only a few hints, that [[spoiler: Ciel]] was responsible. Yes, there's enough evidence for [[spoiler: Snake]] to suspect [[spoiler: Ciel and Sebastian]] are guilty. Yet [[spoiler:he]] is so completely convinced that [[spoiler: he's]] guessed correctly, [[spoiler: Snake]] basically elected [[spoiler:him]]self to be judge, jury and executioner for someone [[spoiler: he]] barely knew, based on very little evidence. Oh, and when you think about it, [[spoiler: Snake sent the vipers after Ciel, a thirteen year old, instead of Sebastian, a full grown adult, when both had appeared and disappeared under the same mysterious circumstances. Most people would guess that Sebastian was the mastermind and Ciel his accomplice, or at best his apprentice, but not Snake.]] Perhaps Yana Toboso wanted [[spoiler: Snake]] to be FunctionalGenreSavvy, but when you think about the context [[spoiler: he]] comes across as AxCrazy and self-righteous instead.
* In Episode 12, The Duke of Mandalay (Sometimes called Earl Mandalay in certain scenes and translations), who previously was a master to Drossel when still alive, is revealed to be [[spoiler:residing in an insane asylum for unknown reasons.]] He's never spoken of again.
* There's too many to list, so let's start with reading or re-reading a scene in Black Butler that has Sebastian in it. He's doing something, giving Ciel advice... and then you realize the implications of whatever Sebastian said/did. There are COUNTLESS instances where Sebastian misleads Ciel, lies through omission, manipulates him, and just fucks with his head. However these moments are always so subtle the reader doesn't notice until they look over it again in depth, or until after learning a new piece of information that changes the meaning behind something seemingly innocent.
** Going on with the idea of Sebastian fucking with Ciel's head, there is the fact that Ciel has been having nightmares of his torture every night ever since he escaped. The Book of Murder side story revealed that Sebastian can enter and manipulate a person's dreams at anytime, so who's to say that Sebastian hasn't been forcing Ciel to relive that horrific month ''every night?'' If so, is it because he wants to keep the wounds fresh so Ciel would stick to his revenge, is he simply "spicing up" Ciel's soul some more, or is he doing it ForTheEvulz?
** Even worse, remember what was revealed to have happened to Ciel [[RapeAsBackstory in chapter 135?]] If Sebastian actually is causing Ciel to have endless nightmares about his torture, it's highly unlikely Sebastian would spare ''that'' detail...
* In Weston College Arc [[spoiler: one of Derrick's victims]] is scolded by Redmond and Derrick because he left the school without permission and brought alcohol into the school. Why would he break the rules when [[spoiler: the leader of his bullies]] was the prefect's boytoy, thus drawing his attention? Two options: he was going to use the whiskey to [[DrowningMySorrows drowns his sorrows]] or [[spoiler: Derrick forced him to buy it]]. Since Derrick used the bottle later for [[spoiler: bribing Agares]] the latter is possible.
* In chapter 97 of the Green Witch Arc, the Green Witch realizes [[spoiler: her whole life is a lie]]. The magic she created [[spoiler: is actually a poisonous gas that]] kills any living thing when they come into contact with it. The ceremonies she did to protect her people from the werewolves? [[spoiler: Not even needed; the werewolves are just men in elaborate costumes.]]
** Also, her knowledge about sex and going as far as to think all men were lustful (hence trying to gain Ciel and Sebastian's trust via threesome proposition/thinking it appropriate to ask Sebastian for "DNA"). Her life [[spoiler: has been carefully controlled for years]] so she had to have read those "books" with the knowledge and consent [[spoiler: of the people in charge]]. ''Why'' would they want her knowing about ''that''? And the reason for binding her feet? [[spoiler: They did it for avoid her escaping if she discovered the truth.]]
** Going more into this [[SarcasmMode lovely]] topic, while Ciel has certainly showed disgust with these particular actions nobody (not even Wolfram or Sebastian) has really made a major move in trying to get Sieglinde to cease with the inappropriate behavior. Not even [[spoiler: now that she's residing in England.]]
* Speaking of [[spoiler: living a lie,]] did all of the women in the village know about [[spoiler: the poisonous gas being developed?]] How much of the whole thing were the women really privy to?
** Yep, everybody knew about the gas. The whole village was "invented" as a part of [[spoiler: a military project continuing the work of Sieglinde's father on the use of mustard gas]] and it's purpose was simply to keep Sieglinde away from anything that would "impair her genius" and hinder the discovery of the deadly gas. And who was the mastermind behind this project? The old grandma [[spoiler: who turns out to be Sieglinde's mother]]!
* The live action movie provided some heavy things but nothing more fridge horror-y than this: [[spoiler: In the beginning, we're introduced to a boy named Kiyoharu Genpo and since trailers spoil, we're aware that Kiyoharu is actually a girl named Shiori whose parents were murdered in front of her when she was seven and she was kidnapped and tortured until she sold her soul to a demon named Sebastian and came back with him as a boy named Kiyoharu six months later. Ten years later, she's inherited the Genpo estate and Funtom Corporation... huh. Later on, her family history is shared and it's shown that a man named Ernest, Earl of Phantomhive moved to Japan allegedly due to being the Queen's Watchdog and spy and brought his company and wealth with him but he changed his last name to Genpo. So now it shows that Shiori is related to Ciel Phantomhive and Elizabeth. But then it's also shared in the climax that the Genpo/Phantomhive family has always had a curse where the Head would always serve the Queen as her Watchdog and somehow, they'd sell their soul to a demon... as far as the manga's shared, Ciel was the first to do that, which implies he started the curse. Even more so the fact that the first demon was Sebastian and Sebastian is now Shiori's butler, which implies that Sebastian has been the demon that was summoned every time the head of the family wanted to sell their soul... I'm guessing Ciel's soul was just that tasty?]]
** A possible explanation to this could be that [[spoiler: Ciel simply never obtained his revenge during his life, most likely due to being murdered by possibly the same organization that killed his family and tortured him. It could explain why Sebastian told Shiori that there would be "complications" in the event that she is murdered and that he wanted her soul to be "darker than black" before he eats it. He's been waiting for too long, and he now wants an award that would put Ciel's soul to shame. Though, how come this has now lasted for four generations (implying that Ernest and Shiori's father had the same fate) now is still very questionable.]]
* The reveal of the shinigamis [[spoiler: being humans who were DrivenToSuicide]]. The implications are horrific:
** Sascha is barely a teenager so [[spoiler: they must have had some serious reasons to kill themself before even reaching adulthood]].
*** This also means that, unless there are exceptions or an age limit, ''children'' are subjected to this system (even if they are accompanied by an adult like Sascha is).
** Ronald is carefree and easygoing. [[spoiler: Whatever drove him to suicide must have been horrible]].
** More Fridge TearJerker than FridgeHorror, but Grell is a trans woman in the XIX century. In the Shinigami's OVA she wore her hair very short and acted a lot manlier than now. She probably spent her life pressured to be something she wasn't until [[DespairEventHorizon it was too much]].
*** It also casts Grell's [[SuicideAsComedy inept]] attempts at suicide in her first appearance in a much different light.
** Then, there is just [[spoiler: the punishment itself. The main point of becoming Shinigami was to expose those who committed suicide to death on a daily basis until they are forgiven. Not only does this make them see the loss of life and all of the opportunities lost with it (opportunities that they deprived themselves from), but they are also not allowed to intervene and prevent a dated death that does not have any "remarks" on its records no matter the consequences. Although this is really not a problem for much of the Shinigami (notably Grell and Sascha), it could still be quite horrible for others.]]
** Kind of going in line with this but also with shinigamis in general, but just the fact that there are shinigamis that absolutely ''revel'' in death such as Grell which pretty much [[spoiler: cancels the meaning of the punishment. Hell, Sascha actually called becoming a shinigami their vocation.]] What does this say about times in which [[spoiler: complete psychopaths commit suicide and become shinigami?]]
** This troper, at least, is completely terrified by what this implies for Will. Since he's the most stoic of the Shinigami we've seen so far, what would have been able to push him so far over the edge? Or maybe his stoicness is a trait he adopted to deal with having to be a Shinigami. Plus, his diligence suddenly becomes tragic when you realize he probably just wants to be 'forgiven' as quickly as he can so he can just be dead...
** This also brings to mind the exam that shingami must pass; going from the revelation, failing the exam might ultimately result in [[spoiler: the person being thrown into Hell.]]
** And then there is what happened to Alan and Eric. Since [[spoiler: they were killed before being forgiven,]] does this mean that [[spoiler: they were ultimately thrown into Hell?]]
** And then there's the question of whether or not a person can be forgiven and not just told that and doomed to be a reaper forever.
*** Given Undertaker's backstory, the above theory holds considerable credibility. If these people really were to be forgiven based on the deeds they perform as shinigami, leaving the organization before earning that forgiveness would probably get one sent straight to hell. Since Undertaker seems to have suffered few, if any, repercussions in the long term for abandoning his duties before earning forgiveness, perhaps the shinigami have no forgiveness to earn...
*** To be fair, Undertaker is said to be one of the most powerful shinigami in existence and is currently the most powerful character in the series thus far. It could be possible that many have tried to apprehend him but he has overcome the attempts to the point that very few will even try anymore.
** Suicide also isn't always on purpose as there have been ''many'' cases of AccidentalSuicide. Given [[CrapsackWorld the setting,]] it wouldn't be far fetched that no exception is made for these cases. The same can also possibly be said for those who perform a HeroicSuicide or choose suicide via MercyKill (i.e. euthanasia or a deliberate coup de grâce).
* Ciel's DarkAndTroubledPast has hints of sexual assault at the hands of the cultist members who captured him. They [[ForceFeeding force fed]] him his meals, pushed him down to the ground in the season 3 opening, stripped him of his shirt, and branded him. Much emphasis is put on their hands touching him and Ciel later seeks revenge on those who humiliated him. There's also his HatesBeingTouched mentality in regards to everyone except Sebastian and Elizabeth.
** In chapter 71, Ciel is completely calm when apprehending Maurice Cole, even after the other goons rush in and grab him. It's not until when Maurice rips apart Ciel's shirt with scissors that he freaks out and begs for them to stop. Some flashbacks Ciel had during the Ship Arc reveal that [[spoiler: before being sacrificed,]] Ciel had his shirt ripped apart with a knife, cut the same way Maurice tore the shirt. Quite possibly, the bullies reminded him of the sacrifice. So basically a petty bully at a boarding school managed to trigger another student's PTSD.
** Alternatively, if the sexual assault hints are true the stripping in chapter 71 could have been made Ciel think he was about to be raped again. We never see what Maurice ''was'' planning, so that option is still entirely possible.
** The sexual assault was confirmed in chapter 135.
* Anything that somebody saw as {{Foreshadowing}} for chapter 135's ending will inevitably be FridgeHorror for someone who didn't see it coming. To whit:
** Ciel's freak out about Freckles washing his back and stripping his wet clothes off probably triggered some PTSD.
*** Pretty much any time Ciel panics or shows fear for [[HatesBeingTouched being touched by other people]] takes on new meaning in hindsight.
** This line from the Luxury Liner arc: "My butler isn't [[InternalizedCategorism killing the ones]] [[DefiledForever who soiled me]]."
* The Undertakers repeated question to Ciel, if he 'wants to try out a coffin'. With the revelation of [[spoiler:what he did to the older twin]] it gets a pretty sick twist.
* If one really stops to think about it... Sebastian himself might as well be an entire iceberg of FridgeHorror. It's unknown how old he is or what his origins are, but at the very least he's a demon who is older than any human alive and Ciel is most likely not his first contract. What kind of depraved shit did Sebastian do in his lifetime in the name of ruining and devouring souls, especially if doing so before developing the NobleDemon aesthetic he has now? What types of masters did Sebastian serve under, and what were the consequences (aside from soul devouring) for the masters and anyone else who happened to be in the line of fire? Considering what has been seen from Sebastian, especially during his worst moments, the list can be quite long and horrifying.
** The same can also be said for other demons like Claude, [[spoiler: Hannah, and the triplets.]] And speaking of Season 2, [[spoiler: Ciel himself joins the demonic horde and it can be expected that he'll eventually follow suit in some capacity.]]
* All those times Sebastian has smiled after getting closer to Ciel, usually during what seems to be a cute bonding moment? ''That's the smile of a predator who has gotten his prey to let its guard down around him that much more.'' All those times he pressed Ciel for stories of his childhood or his health history? ''He's not being friendly or a good butler, he's looking for more weak points to later exploit in his quest to further Ciel's path to despair.''
* Ciel's HeroicBSOD in chapter 90 was entirely caused by the rough treatment he received from Sebastian as part of the "cure" for the "curse." He was stripped naked, held underwater by a naked adult until he started to drown, and then force fed and made to vomit repeatedly. Is it any wonder that he didn't want Sebastian near him after that, especially with how it mirrored the month he spent captive? And the worst part was that the "curse" was actually just mustard gas, and the "cure" might have been completely useless and traumatized him meaninglessly. WordOfGod says that Sebastian doesn't really think about his actions and just uses brute force, and boy does it show here.

* The Grim Reapers are near-sighted, because they didn't see far enough into their future and committed suicide.
