[[folder:''Another'']]
Foreshadowing in the anime of ''Literature/{{Another}}'':
* The first minute and a half is a montage of seemingly random and unconnected imagery. They are actually subtle hints at things to come, from the various plot-important locations to several of the deaths.
* Also the early episodes have quite a few subtle hints that only make sense once we are told (or notice that they have very similar character design, but more likely the former) that [[spoiler:Reiko and Ms. Mikami are the same person, and hint that she is the dead one.]]
* A minor one but if you look closely to Kouichi's hospital table in the first episode, the Creator/StephenKing book Mizuno points out to is Literature/PetSematary. Any King fan watching would know it was all about the consequences of trying to bring the dead back to life, a recurring theme in the series.
* Around the time Kouichi becomes the second "non-existent" student, Mr. Kubodera says that Ms. Mikami is going along with the decision in spite of how difficult it is for her. [[spoiler:It's difficult because she's Kouichi's aunt]].
[[/folder]]

[[folder:''Assassination Classroom'']]
Foreshadowing in ''Manga/AssassinationClassroom'':
* Nagisa was built up to have a ''lot'' of hidden talent. Confirmed in Chapter 41, which reveals that Nagisa has an ''exceptional'' talent for assassination. To be specific, his ability to hide such bloodlust that it scares trained soldiers.
* In chapter 28, Koro-sensei takes several students to see an American {{superhero}} movie, wherein the major PlotTwist involves the BigBad being revealed to be the heroine's brother. At the end of the chapter we meet [[spoiler:Itona, Koro-sensei's AxCrazy "younger brother".]]
* In chapter 67, Karasuma vaguely recognizes two of the mastermind's minions because he had seen them before [[spoiler:in Takaoka's photographs of the soldiers he had previously trained, foreshadowing the mastermind's identity.]]
* The "Reaper" is holding a rose and a bouquet of flowers when he's first described by Lovro. [[spoiler:He first appears to the students of Class E as an unassuming flower salesman, offers Kanzaki a rose, and sells them a bouquet of flowers for Irina's birthday]] before the story reveals his identity.
* In chapter 90, Koro-sensei says that the only ikemens (hot guys) in the class are Isogai, and himself. [[spoiler:Come chapter 134, we see he was actually a fairly good-looking man.]]
* Chapter 128 is one long flashback of [[http://microlm.tumblr.com/post/111593001543/regarding-chapter-128 all the hints throughout the previous chapters]] foreshadowing that [[spoiler:Kayano has tentacles like Koro-sensei and Itona.]] For example, Shiro says that the "monster" in Class E [[spoiler:averted their eyes as soon as they saw him]].
[[/folder]]

[[folder:''Bakuman'']]
Foreshadowing in ''Manga/{{Bakuman}}'':
* Yoshida expresses some concern about how MoralGuardians will view PCP's "perfect crimes" during the serialization meeting. This comes up again [[spoiler:as the reason PCP won't qualify for sponsors for an anime]].
* Takagi points out that Nakai "looks like a stalker" while continuing to draw outside Aoki's apartment. While this initially seems to present him as a {{Determinator}}, [[spoiler:in light of his demanding that Aoki become his girlfriend in exchange for him drawing for her, it goes to show that Nakai doesn't really respect her wishes]].
* Similarly, while Nakai seems like a NiceGuy in his first appearances, he inwardly complains about Fukuda, and later badmouths Fukuda while talking to Mashiro. All this seems to indicate that Nakai isn't necessarily as pleasant as he first seems.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:''Black Butler'']]
Foreshadowing in ''Manga/BlackButler'':
* The revelation that [[spoiler:Ciel Phantomhive has a twin brother]] has actually been given quite an amount of foreshadowing, with the help of panel direction, minor visual clues, and even certain dialogue much earlier on. Minor signs are Ciel saying that [[spoiler:Ciel is already dead]] when flashing back to the traumatic ritual that summoned Sebastian, and hesitating to tell Sebastian [[spoiler:his name, showing that he considered himself to be the extra and taking on his twin's name and identity, after his death]]. The ''Werewolf'' arc in Germany chose to go for some more overt indicators. Just taking a look at Ciel's dream when he's under the effect of the 'curse' gives a huge wink to the revelation.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:''Bokurano'']]
Foreshadowing in ''Manga/{{Bokurano}}'':
* When the pilots get into Zearth for their first battle, they see their respective chairs, created based on where they sit in their own homes. The group immediately notices a crib, which Maki erroneously assumes is hers- she'd already found her actual chair, and notes in an aside that she'd thought that one was hers. Kanji asks if Maki is pregnant, and Maki, annoyed, says she has a little brother on the way. [[spoiler:Chizu actually is pregnant, and the crib is for her unborn baby]].
* Immediately afterward, Machi claims Maki's actual chair [[spoiler:to cover up the fact that she doesn't actually have one]].
* Kako notices one of the chairs looks like it's from school, and immediately assumes it belongs to Ushiro. When Ushiro remains silent, Kako wonders what kind of life he lives. It turns out that Ushiro's father is a school teacher, [[spoiler:and that the chair actually belongs to Kana Ushiro, Mr. Ushiro's biological daughter- Ushiro is probably staying silent to cover up the fact that he isn't in the contract]].
* In the anime, Waku has a vacant expression on his face [[spoiler:immediately before falling off the robot]], showing that [[spoiler:he'd died before he fell, some time before the kids learn that piloting the robot will kill them]].
* In the anime, when the group is discussing what to do after [[spoiler:Waku's]] death, Chizu notes that as long as they keep quiet, it's highly unlikely that they'll be blamed for his death, considering how many other people died during the battle. This foreshadows that [[spoiler:she's planning on killing someone when her turn comes up and making her victim look like collateral damage]].
* During Kodama's battle, the group notices that the enemy robot is much more careful about not damaging the city than Kodama is. [[spoiler:This foreshadows that the other robots are also piloted by humans fighting for their respective universes. It's possible that the pilots of that robot didn't know that they were in another universe for that battle]].
* Sasami, noting that Koyemshi comes when the children call for him, asks them to summon him. Machi and Anko try, to no avail, but Koyemshi comes out when Kana calls him, saying "When a cutie like her calls me, I can't play hard-to-get, can I?", much to the other girls' annoyance. This foreshadows that [[spoiler:after Kokopelli's battle, Kana summoned Koyemshi and had him enter her into the contract]].
* In the anime, during Nakama's battle, Zearth ends up somewhere the Self-Defense Forces can't reach[[note]]the manga had her battle take place in the middle of a city, before the authorities got involved[[/note]], despite the fact that battles usually take place near the pilot's location. This foreshadows how [[spoiler:some battles take place in other universes]].
* During the anime version of Chizu's battle, after Machi gives Chizu a GetAHoldOfYourselfMan to get her to fight and atone for causing Kako's death, Chizu [[ArmorPiercingQuestion asks Machi if she also intends to fight and die]]. Machi hesitates, [[spoiler:since she's not actually in the contract]].
* Moji's battle has two clues that the enemy robots [[spoiler:are piloted by humans]], depending on the version. In the manga, he notices that the "sweet spot" on top of the robot looks just like Zearth's cockpit. In the anime, he pulls a risky gambit to trick the robot into revealing which of its halves has its weak spot, something that would only have worked on a thinking human.
* In the anime version of Maki's arc, Tanaka becomes somewhat uncomfortable after hearing Maki complain about Jun abusing Kana. [[spoiler:It's quite possibly because she, Jun's mother, feels somewhat responsible for him turning out that way after she left him behind]].
* In the anime, when Daichi starts worrying about what will happen after he dies, Ushiro chides him for not living up to his big talk about duty and responsibility. Tanaka then scolds Ushiro, saying that "Everyone's scared." [[spoiler:She's his mother, and she knows that her son is going to die]].
* In the manga, Machi describes her brother as an incredible {{jerkass}} who treats everyone besides her like dirt. [[spoiler:This is a fairly accurate description of Koyemshi]].
* Seki mentions that Tanaka [[FormerTeenRebel used to be a delinquent when she was younger]]. Later on, Kana notes that Jun's biological mother was a former student of Kana's father, who left him to care for her baby and disappeared. All this foreshadows that [[spoiler:Tanaka is Jun's mother]].
* Soon after [[spoiler:Katari is shot and killed]], the remaining pilots wonder if they'll be targeted by assassins. [[spoiler:Machi gets killed by one before her battle]].
[[/folder]]

[[folder:''Destiny of the Shrine Maiden'']]
* ''Manga/DestinyOfTheShrineMaiden'' has lots of foreshadowing, such as quick, very short flash-backs of the priestess ritual seen a few times. The whole first part of [[WhamEpisode Episode 8]] heavily hints that [[spoiler:[[FaceHeelTurn Chikane's ''up to something'']]]], and watching the show several times will induce cringing during some seemingly perfectly innocent moments, such as Chikane commenting that [[WhatDoYouMeanItsNotSymbolic she likes the color of Himeko's robes better than her own]] or even just [[CatGirl Nekoko]] saying she doesn't like to get [[PlayingWithSyringes injections]]... There's also the fact that on the painting-thing of the Orochi, seen in the very first episode, the eighth head is quite obviously separated from the others and won't be seen at first glance.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:''D. Gray-Man'']]
* In ''Manga/DGrayMan'', way back in the first volume, the gatekeeper can't decipher if Allen was human or not. They eventually wrote it off due to Allen's curse. [[spoiler: However the curse only affects Allen's eye, not his whole body.]]
** The Joker card. While it first leads up to [[spoiler: the destruction of Allen's Innocence]], it also foreshadows [[spoiler: Allen's complete and more powerful Innocence, Crowned Clown.]]
*** In the anime, the Finder Allen and Kanda were traveling with was doing a tarot reading and at one of the key points, ends up with a Joker. One that happened to resemble Allen.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:''Digimon'']]
* ''Manga/DigimonVTamer01'' is ''constantly'' foreshadowing future plot developments because the {{aver|tedtrope}}sion of DeusExMachina, OnlyTheAuthorCanSaveThemNow and ContrivedCoincidence are very important to the development Neo Saiba's relationship with his sister Rei, as well as Alias Three and his goal to make a better world.
* In episode eight of ''Anime/DigimonAdventure'', the group stays at an abandoned mansion. While there, TK notices a picture of an angel, and explains to Patamon that it's a benevolent guardian, comparing it to the digimon themselves. At the end of that story arc, Patamon digivolves into Angemon and gives his life to protect TK.
** At the end of Episode 1, the narrator in the Japanese version says: "it was the beginning of the longest, and shortest, summer vacation they had ever had", foreshadowing the fact that time used to flow differently in the Digimon world until the defeat of Apocalymon.
** There were eight beds in the mansion, already foreshadowing [[spoiler: the eighth child Hikari]] long before she was even mentioned.
* In Digimon Adventure 02, there's a couple minor hints as to who's really behind everthing. Look closely at the Digimon Emperor's eyemask. [[spoiler:The design on the bridge looks a lot like the wings of a bat, and resembles a more elaborate design on a certain vampire's coffin. Sure enough Myotismon is behind everything.]]
* Two from ''Anime/DigimonDataSquad''. When Touma is formally introduced to Masaru's mother and little sister, he's briefly saddened, but develops a sort of crush on them almost at first sight, and approaches spending a day out with them the way some men might plan a marriage proposal. While the episode includes a brief flashback to his own mother, confirming he has issues with her, it's a good twenty episodes before we find out that he ''also'' has a DelicateAndSickly little sister that he dotes on. A subtler one is from episode 8: When he reveals that he planted a listening device on Yoshino, assuming that she'd ignore orders to back down from a target she was too close to, Touma adds that "To deceive your enemies, you first have to deceive your friends." Halfway through the series, Touma pretends to betray the group in order to get close to and betray Kurata, who's holding his sister hostage.

%%[[folder:''Doraemon'']]
%%* ''Manga/{{Doraemon}}'''s movies loves to foreshadow things that are very important to the plot.
%%[[/folder]]

[[folder:''Dragon Ball'']]
* ''Anime/DragonBallZ'' pretty much foreshadows Goku's first transformation to Super Saiyan all throughout the Namek arc.
* There are many, many examples in ''Manga/DragonBall''. Including:
** From Goku's first transformation into an Oozaru and him turning to normal after his tail is removed, Oolong asks if "he's some kind of space alien". Turns out he's a member of the Saiyan race.
** In the beginning of ''Z'', Raditz when he arrives on Earth makes reference to the Galactic Market which he's a mercenary for. The good guys then have to face off against [[BigBad the head of the organization]], Freeza.
** The first time the "Super Saiyan" is mentioned, it's between a conversation between then-introduced characters, Vegeta and Nappa as they head off to Earth for the Dragon Balls to grant them immortality. It's mentioned again once more sarcastically by Vegeta describing Gohan's resilience in the same saga, and in the Namek saga, the Great Elder asks Krillin if a Super Saiyan was the one killed Kami, before learning his actual nature. The term is used far more frequently as a plot-point after Vegeta suspects Goku became one after curb-stomping Recoome, by Vegeta, Ginyu and Freeza, until Goku finally achieves it facing Freeza.
** Piccolo becoming less evil, and allowing the people he killed (Raditz) to pass on. While it shows he is changing into a NobleDemon, it also ominously notes that his life may end soon.
** King Kai noting that if Vegeta was at Krillin's mercy and was killed, it wouldn't "[destroy] the roots [of evil]". He was likely referring to Freeza.
** Nail notes Piccolo is one of two beings (Kami), and remarks that if they unite again, he'll be more powerful than Freeza. Piccolo does this later and is strong enough to go toe-to-toe with Imperfect Cell.
** Freeza tells Zarbon that he may need to call the Ginyu Force to Namek. When Zarbon ask why, Freeza mentions that he had a "premonition" that a single Saiyan may come to challenge his power, and even has the possibility of defeating him. Interestingly, he ''wasn't'' talking about Vegeta. It's likely it foreshadowed Goku [[spoiler:(or alternatively, Future Trunks).]]
** Ignoring Future Trunks' message, [[HilariousInHindsight looking back on it]], it can even be implied that Bulma and Vegeta may get together when she offers him a place to stay alongside the Namekians in her home, although at first sight it would be simply her [[HumansAreSpecial being a decent person as an Earthling would be]]. She even describes a dream she had to her then-''boyfriend'' Yamcha about Vegeta being a decent guy to her. Of course, this is just a few episodes before Trunks appears. Going back even further, at the beginning of the Freeza Saga during the time Bulma, Krillin and Gohan are traveling to the planet Namek to find the dragon balls and wish their friends back, Bulma asks about Vegeta offhandedly, surprising both Krillin and Gohan. During the middle of the Freeza Saga, Bulma is shown dreaming about Vegeta. Before they leave the planet and return to Earth, Bulma flirts with Vegeta a little bit to convince him to go to Earth with them.
** Kami being reluctant to fuse with Piccolo to observe if the {{artificial human}}s are really as evil as Trunks claims they are, and observing a new evil developing (Cell). Turns out he was correct. Not only are they ''not'' as evil, Cell ''is and then some''.
** After their fight, Goku notes that Majin Buu is more of a ManChild than an evil monster. Buu is redeemed after the EnemyWithout is destroyed by Goku, who decides to spare his life.
** Also with regards to Buu there is a possibility in one of Fat Buu's comments to Babidi. While dancing around in mockery of Babidi's injuries, he chants "Never normal, never normal, can't go back, can't go back!" In later episodes, Buu goes back to "normal".
** During the match between Kami (as Shen) and Yamcha, Yamcha asks [[WhatAreYou what is Shen]], to which he jokingly responds "Who knows? Maybe I'm an alien". Similarly, when Shen[=/=]Kami and Piccolo are speaking in a weird language (actually Namekian), Bulma wonders if they're aliens.
** In the Majin Buu arc, during the World Martial Arts Tournament, Goten and Trunks fight together while [[TotemPoleTrench disguised as one man]] named Mighty Mask. A few chapters/episodes later, the two learn the FusionDance technique and actually merge into a single entity named Gotenks to fight [[BigBad Majin Buu]].
* In ''Anime/DragonBallZBattleOfGods'':
** Beerus puts off the destruction of Earth until his ServileSnarker retainer Whis finishes his meal, and this is PlayedForLaughs, but it does leave one wondering why someone with such a HairTriggerTemper would do that. [[spoiler:It's because Whis is actually much, ''[[AlmightyJanitor much]]'' stronger than Beerus and Beerus knows it, so he pretty much has to let Whis do whatever he likes.]]
** When Beerus and Whis arrive on Earth, the latter notes that there are five saiyans currently on the planet; Goku, Vegeta, Gohan, Trunks, and Goten. However, shortly afterward we see Goku training on King Kai's planet, leaving viewers wondering if this is a mess-up. [[spoiler:Whis is correct in his count; Videl is currently pregnant with Pan.]]
* ''Anime/DragonBallZResurrectionF'' has Whis explain a state where the body will start reacting to attacks on its own. This form, [[spoiler: the Ultra Instinct form plays a major role in the Tournament of Power arc.]]
* ''Anime/DragonBallSuper'' has one in the form of the CreativeClosingCredits, during the song ''Boogie Back'' which works as an ImageSong of sorts for Bulma. This ending is used right before the Tournament of Power begins and the heroes are trying to put together a team. The ending of the montage shows all the fighters of the 7th universe assuming some AssKickingPose, except for Goku, who is standing still and Majin Buu, who is just lying over some clouds, presumably asleep. Of course, a few episodes later, [[spoiler: Buu falls asleep and refuses to wake up, forcing [[TheHero Goku]] to use a different fighter as a replacement: [[BigBad Freeza]].]] The montage was eventually changed and [[spoiler: Buu was replaced with Freeza firing KiAttacks to reflect this.]]
[[/folder]]

[[folder:''Eyeshield 21'']]
''Manga/Eyeshield21'':
* Sena's test number for the Deimon test entrance exam was [[ArcNumber 21]].
* Way back in the earlier chapters, Agon predicts that Ojou would make it to the top 4 at best. Ojou got 3rd in the Kanto tournament, and ''4th overall''.
* A random member of the Dinosaurs suggested "they should just aim for 3rd", which is what Hakushuu ended up getting.
* During the game against Shinryuuji, Monta catches a ball thrown by a fan without even turning around, foreshadowing his later move "the Devilbat Backfire" which wouldn't officially appear until the game against Ojou.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:''Fairy Tail'']]
''Manga/FairyTail''
* The biggest since the first chapter. The aura of Igneel is often shown in Natsu's battles. During the battle against Faust, we also see the aura of Metallicana and Grandeeney. In the Fighting Festival arc, Natsu and Gajeel can't pass through the barrier around Fairy Tail. Chapter 400 reveals that [[spoiler:Igneel was in Natsu the whole time (the reason they couldn't pass through the barrier is that it forbade anyone over eighty to exit and they had centuries-old dragons inside them]].
* In Chapter 24, Mirajane mentions that there are only five wizards (only S-Class members) allowed on the second floor. She only names four. But since the master is the one doing the allowing, who is the fifth one? Well, in chapter 25 we clearly see her on the second floor without trouble from anyone. She gives Laxus an angry face when he teases Fairy Tail that those who left for an S-Class mission without authorization would likely die. An angry face he claims "he hasn't seen in a long time".
* It's anime-only, but in an early filler episode, Natsu switches bodies with Loke, and comments that being Loke feels strange. [[spoiler: That is because Loke isn't human.]]
%%* Added scenes in Episode 26 hint toward [[spoiler: Loke being a celestial spirit]].
* If you notice the cover for Chapter 197, [[spoiler: Edolas Lisanna isn't part of the Edolas Fairy Tail guild waving goodbye. Why is that? She's actually Earthland Lisanna!]]
* In the lead-up to the Edolas arc, Gajeel expresses his desire to have a talking cat partner like Natsu and Wendy have, and the anniversary of Lisanna's death is approaching. [[spoiler:At the end of the Edolas arc, an exceed follows the Earthland group home, and Lisanna shows up while Mirajane and Elfman are visiting her grave.]]
* The anime adds in a scene where Gajeel's action figure has a place on its stand for a small cat. The Natsu/Happy and Wendy/Carla figurines are sold in pairs, so they figure that Gajeel is eventually going to get a feline companion.
* Natsu telling Zalty (Reitei Lyon's [[TheDragon dragon]]) that he smells like he's wearing women's perfume. [[spoiler: Zalty is actually Ultear in disguise.]]
* Episode 117 is titled "Thunder Crashes", and there's a thunderstorm over Sirius Island and astraphobia (fear of lightning) running rampant among the Fairy Tail wizards present. [[spoiler: When our heroes' battle with Master Hades takes a turn for the worst, and Hades is about to finish Natsu off, Laxus makes a BigDamnHeroes moment, surprising both wizards by jumping down in-between them, to the unpleasant shock of Hades and joyous relief of Natsu's team.]]
* The last page for Chapter 234, a seemingly out of place page with a boy, who resembles [[spoiler:an older Romeo]], staring at the sea; he appears again in Sirius Island arc's ending marking the beginning of a [[spoiler:7 year TimeSkip]], the year is [[spoiler:X791]], this date could be seen in the boy's next appearance on the newspaper next to him.
* The cover photo of Chapter 325 has Yukino with angel wings, which fueled speculation that [[spoiler:her sister, Sorano, is Angel from Oracion Seis. Chapter 365 has Jellal refer to Angel by her first name: Sorano.]]
* Silver's name foreshadows that he's relevant to Gray's storyline.
* There are hints that [[spoiler: Natsu is E.N.D.]] throughout the series.
** Natsu is not affected by Curse Magic, which is fatal to humans. [[spoiler: Him actually being a demon mitigates it quickly.]]
** E.N.D. is stated to be a flame spirit.
** While in Edolas, Natsu pretends to be a "Demon King" to give Mystogan an 'enemy to defeat' so he can take the throne. [[spoiler: E.N.D is said to be the most powerful demon, and the demon Mard Geer calls him their king.]]
** Zeref asks Natsu, oddly, if they meet for their next fight, would it be Natsu facing him or E.N.D.? [[spoiler: Seeing as he's Etherious Natsu Dragneel, this hints to a SuperpoweredEvilSide]].
* In ''Manga/FairyTailZero'', readers may notice that no one besides Mavis responds to what Zera says or does, and Mavis even has to introduce her to Yuriy. [[spoiler:Zera is an ImaginaryFriend, so no one besides Mavis can see or hear her]].
[[/folder]]

[[folder:''Fullmetal Alchemist'']]
!Manga
* ''Manga/FullmetalAlchemist'' does this quite often, usually with things said in passing by the homunculi. "Human Sacrifices" indeed...
* Madame Christmas of seems like a strange name when you remember that Christmas or Christianity are not in the manga version of FMA. Of course it makes perfect sense when it's just a nickname based off her real name of Chris Mustang, who is Roy's foster mother. That explains how he became such an amazing flirt.
* In episode 11 of ''Brotherhood'', a wanted poster with Greed on it appears near the end. Guess who appears two episodes later.
* There's a particularly chilling example in the last arc. In Chapter 94, Hawkeye gets a minor scratch on her neck during a fight with Envy. Then in Chapter 100 [[spoiler: she is mortally injured in the same place.]]
* Remember Lust's curse to Mustang as he killed her? [[spoiler: "I long for the day your eyes are twisted in agony".]] Well... [[spoiler: Mustang ends up blinded.]]
* In his fight with Lan Fan, Ed uses a decoy (in the form of his detached right arm) to defeat her and references getting the idea from animals who are trapped sacrificing a limb. [[spoiler: Later on, Lan Fan is hunted by Wrath and forced to [[LifeOrLimbDecision chop off her arm.]]]] In fact, it is heavily implied [[spoiler: that Lan Fan actually took the idea from Ed's trick.]]
* Ling and Greed are the only two characters to go around without shirts. Minor foreshadowing? Maybe.
** A better example of foreshadowing for Ling's fate occurs soon after his introduction: Ling is seeking immortality and is interested in Al's soul being attached to armor. Guess who else shared these same traits and was killed off in the chapter right before.
** There's also the part where both of them hate people messing with their henchmen. Really, they were tailor made for one another.
* When Ling sees Ed perform alchemy without a circle, it looks to him as though Ed is praying to God. [[spoiler: Later, we find out that Amestrian alchemy is powered by a {{Satan}}-like Homunculus who actually absorbs God, only to eventually lose control at the apex of his power and receives a NoHoldsBarredBeatdown sans alchemy courtesy of, um…]]
* Some people, really, such audacious thoughts... [[spoiler:Guess what Father is planning to do.]]
* Greed's first words. Really...
-->'''Greed:''' Ooh, cool! He really is empty! Nice to meet ya, kid. I'm Greed. [[IJustWantToHaveFriends Wanna be friends]]?
* Go watch any, or all, of the openings to FMA Brotherhood. One would notice that they all have a close up of [[spoiler: either Roy's face and eyes. In some he looks directly at us.]] [[SarcasmMode That coudn't mean anything right?]]
* The initial {{filler}} episode of FMA Brotherhood has Isaac [=McDougal=] asks the Elric brothers, "Do you know what [[ExactWords shape]] this country is in?" [[spoiler:In episode 35, Ed realizes that this was meant literally. Amestris is in the shape of [[GeometricMagic a transmutation circle]] With the points of the circle quite literally [[BloodMagic marked in blood]].]]

!Anime
* The first anime had major foreshadowing for the manga:
** Mustang's [[spoiler:defeat of Pride]] in the final episode has a lot in common with his defeat of [[spoiler:Lust]] in the manga. Both homunculi impale him with their respective weapons during the battle, and both are ultimately killed by Mustang burning them with his bare hands until their regenerative abilities are exhausted.
** At the end of the anime, Mustang [[spoiler:loses an eye]]. Guess what? In the manga he [[spoiler:goes completely [=BLIND=].]]
** Riza Hawkeye emotionally shoots Archer to death after thinking Roy is dead. She does the same in the manga to [[spoiler:Lust]] but it doesn't work in the latter case.
** Even tiny things as Ed's ''Anime/FullmetalAlchemistTheConquerorOfShamballa'' hairstyle looking eerily similar to his hairstyle in the manga's final arc, and the earlier cameo of Ling in the crowd foreshadows manga events in various ways.
* In "Created Human", a supposedly sleeping Bradley is already aware of the Elric's investigation into Laboratory 5, which started hours ago, and Hughes' rescue mission for them, which Hughes just authorized ''minutes'' ago, and decided to personally accompany them to the site of this corrupt institution. Hughes takes a lingering glance, immediately finding his story suspect. This would further Hughes' investigation into Bradley, which concluded three episodes later, and lead to the reveal that [[spoiler: Bradley is the Homunculus Pride]], which was revealed ''eighteen'' episodes later.
** The same episode also teases the relationship between Ed, Envy, and [[spoiler: Hoenheim of Light, their shared father]].
** Ed posits that Shou Tucker's transformation into a talking chimera that retains his name couldn't have been done by him at the level of skill then known. This either gives FiveSecondForeshadowing to the abundance of Red Water in the facility, or, as Ed's further hypotheses suggest, there's a far more skilled alchemist out there, which would be [[spoiler: Dante]].
** Upon escaping the lab disguised as soldiers, Lust, Envy and Greed walk past the disguised Sloth, who tells them "Good work, 'troops.'"
* Greed's long term imprisonment in the sealed room of Lab 5 and Gluttony's fear of the otherwise empty room foreshadow the transmutation circle used to paralyze and kill homunculi.

[[folder:''Future Diary'']]
* A minor (and perhaps easily missed) one occurs in ''Manga/FutureDiary'', showing the students with the top grades; Yukiteru, the main character, places first[[note]]thanks to his future diary [[MundaneUtility giving him the answers to all his tests]][[/note]], and Yuno Gasai places second. In the Survival Game, they are designated the First and Second future diary owners, respectively.
** Look closely at the first opening. It hints at all twelve diary holders identities, as well as [[spoiler: who survives]].
** Listen to the lyrics of the second opening, which have extreme plot points inside its lyrics. Also, what's with all those blue characters? [[spoiler:They don't survive the games, including the twelve diary holders, Yukiteru's friends, and 8th's orphans (whom are represented by burning candles, showing that she outlives them), and even Deus himself. Yukiteru, the winner of the games, is in color. Yuno, who regains her memory in her third body, and Minene, who survives through Deus's power but survives, are gray-scaled, because they lived on even though they lost the games.]]

[[folder:''Haruhi Suzumiya'']]
* The opening narration to ''Literature/HaruhiSuzumiya'' foreshadows a lot of the upcoming plot, and one fact that is so spoilery that it can't even be mentioned on this page.
** Additionally, both Yuki and Mikuru give Kyon cryptic warnings that, after the fact, seem incredibly obvious.
** In the first (chronological...chronological discounting TimeTravel) episode, we get some foreshadowing for the second season. Impressive considering they weren't sure there would be a second season at the time.
--->'''Haruhi:''' Have I met you somewhere before? Like, maybe in the past?\
'''Kyon:''' Not that I know of.
*** [[spoiler:A few months into Kyon's subjective future, he time travels to the past, where he helps Haruhi draw a giant symbol on the school quad at night. She didn't get a good look at him, but obviously this hasn't happened for him yet]].
** Also in the same episode:
--->'''Taniguchi:''' She drew this weird giant symbol on the school quad! Snuck in at night to do it!\
'''Kunikida:''' Oh yeah, I heard about that. It looked like one of those Nazca drawings.\
'''Kyon:''' And she did all this herself?\
'''Taniguchi:''' No doubt!
*** [[spoiler:Same as the above--Kyon was the one who drew the symbol, under Haruhi's directions. She didn't actually help at all]].
** Yuki is reading ''Literature/{{Hyperion}}'' when Kyon first walks in. A major plot point of the first two books in that series is a [[spoiler: computer intelligence that has started creating ArtificialHumans one of which is murderously violent and another that is very helpful and honest]] and in the second half of the ''Hyperion Cantos'' [[spoiler: God (okay, Jesus) turns out to be a GenkiGirl that drags a helpless boy along on her adventures that potentially threaten the entire world]].
** Koizumi makes a few off-hand references to the student council before they become a plot point. In ''Live Alive'', he mentions that he heard about Haruhi's "big activity" from them, and during ''Day of Sagittarius'', when Kyon assumes the student council has finally come to shut down the club, Koizumi mutters "You're right, that hasn't happened yet..." We eventually find out [[spoiler:he engineered the election of a new student council president, one who would be able to act like the enemy Haruhi was expecting]].

[[folder:''[=InuYasha=]'']]
Foreshadowing in ''Manga/{{InuYasha}}'':
* [[BigBad Naraku]] gives [[BrokenBird Sango]] a choice: steal Inuyasha's InfinityPlusOneSword for him or he'll kill her [[BrainwashedAndCrazy brother]]. He then tries to kill her with it, something he shouldn't be able do since it's protected by an anti-{{youkai}} barrier. Later, we find out that Naraku isn't a {{youkai}}. He's a [[HalfHumanhybrid hanyou]], [[{{Foil}} just like Inuyasha]]: hanyou aren't repelled by the barrier which is why Inuyasha can use it.
** As a result of the same scene, Sango warns Inuyasha's group that if Naraku ever gives her the same choice again, she'll make the same decision again (betray friends to try and save the life of a loved one). In the FinalBattle, Naraku gives her the same choice (kill [[HeartwarmingOrphan Rin]] to save [[BlessedWithSuck Miroku's]] life) and, true to her earlier warning, she does indeed make the same choice again (fortunately, Kagome saves Rin's life just in time).
* Another throwaway comment, this time by Toutousai. When Inuyasha first masters the Kaze no Kizu while fighting Sesshoumaru and it's revealed at the same time that Tenseiga has chosen Sesshoumaru as its true master, Toutousai mutters to himself "Whether Tenseiga lives or dies will depend on Sesshoumaru's heart". It takes hindsight to show us just how significant that statement proved to be.
* Early in the manga, the concept of daiyoukai is introduced when it's revealed that the killer of Inuyasha's father was Ryuukossei. Inuyasha's father stabbed Ryuukossei through the heart, but it only sealed him, not killed him. When Bokusenou tries to explain Inuyasha's SuperPoweredEvilSide to Sesshoumaru, he struggles because Sesshoumaru's so powerful he's never been cornered into a desperately life-threatening situation. Towards the end of the manga, Sesshoumaru is finally put into the desperate situation when Magatsuhi, the most powerful youkai evil in history, thrashes him and stabs him through the heart. It neither kills nor seals him, instead unlocking his true power. Sesshoumaru promptly surpasses both Magatsuhi and his own father, achieving Daiyoukai status in the process.

[[folder:''K'']]
''Anime/{{K}}'' dropped a few subtle hints throughout its episodes:
* The opening song showed Yashiro falling from the sky. It's significant, [[spoiler:as he was thrown off the Silver King's blimp before the series started but has no recollection of how and why.]]
* Shiro lacks a cell phone, one thing that tells perhaps most about the owner - friends, acquaintances, personal information. [[spoiler:It's because his memories are all fake and implanted by Neko.]]
* Shiro is highly competent, such as knowing how to pilot a helicopter, deducing information like a scientist would, and knowing exactly how to work flash bombs. It turns out that [[spoiler:he is actually Adolf K. Weismann, a German war scientist during World War II...]]
* In episode 1:
** Kukuri said that she keeps an eye on Yashiro because it feels like he would disappear if she didn't. [[spoiler:Later, she had no idea who he is, as his identity as a student was implanted in her head by Neko's memory manipulation powers.]]
** The robot reacted by saying, "You're too kind," to a supposedly invisible Neko (Kukuri couldn't see her). Later, it turns out that she isn't actually invisible. She just fiddles with the sensory perceptions of surrounding people such that they cannot see her. It doesn't work on robots, of course.
* In episode 2, Shiro looks at a flyer with the name "Marilyn" on it and tells Kuroh that his imaginary sister is named Mari. [[spoiler:His own name, "Yashiro Isana", was made up on the spot and is based on a poster he saw as well, detailing a certain Isana Shrine (Jinja, which consists of the same kanji as "Yashiro").]]
* In episode 4:
** The cleaning robot in Yashiro's room didn't recognise him as a student and tried to clean out the "trash". [[spoiler:He's not a student and is absent from Ashinaka High's records.]]
** The alibi photo which Kukuri found of Shiro had Shiro with his coat zipped up. [[spoiler:He was trying to hide the bloodstains after Tatara Totsuka's death.]]

* In the ''Manga/KenichiTheMightiestDisciple'' manga, during the Rescue Miu arc, Kenichi and company join forces with a mercenary known only as John, who's presented as something of a buffoon but otherwise cheerful and optimistic. At one point during the arc, John shows a bit of HiddenDepths when he easily gives Kenichi a bit of math tutoring, while commenting that he's always had a talent for teaching other people. [[spoiler:It later turns out "John" is a disguise for Saiga Furinji, Miu's DisappearedDad and the leader of Yami's One Shadow Nine Fists; this particular group consists of Yami's top ten martial arts masters who are chosen for the group based on their ability to ''teach disciples properly'']].

** The way the [[AntiVillain Elite]] [[BadassCrew Four]] address Satsuki is a big one. They never call Satsuki ''Kiryuin-sama''/''Lady Kiryuin'' and always refer to her as ''Satsuki-sama''/''Lady Satsuki''. [[spoiler:Episode 17 reveals they were planning on joining Satsuki in her rebellion against Ragyo, meaning they were indicating their loyalty to Satsuki, not the Kiryuin family.]]

[[folder:''Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha'']]
* ''Anime/MagicalGirlLyricalNanoha'':
** In episode 3, Yuuno insists on Nanoha taking a break since she's pushing herself too hard. [[spoiler:In ''[=StrikerS=]'', it's revealed that she nearly got killed during the TimeSkip on a routine mission because all her TrainingFromHell caused a HeroicRROD.]]
** Precia's "[[ATasteOfTheLash parenting]]" methods are hinted at in episode 6, when a shot of Fate's back reveals that it's covered in welts.
* ''Anime/MagicalGirlLyricalNanohaAs'':
** Vita mentions in episode 7 that the Book of Darkness [[ItOnlyWorksOnce can't drain magic from the same mage more than once]]. This might seem odd for an ArtifactOfDoom to have such a restriction, [[spoiler:which leads to the reveal in the following episode that the book is corrupted and it's former purpose was to chronicle spells from across the multiverse. Targeting the same person over and over would just lead to repeat entries.]]
** The series gives quite a few clues as to the identity of the Masked Man ([[spoiler:[[CollectiveIdentity the Lieze sisters]]]]), though most viewers are unlikely to figure out their identity until the end [[spoiler:due to the series hiding it with {{Fauxshadowing}} of it being Chrono's dead father]].
*** In episode seven, he uses a long-range bind on Nanoha, and then sneaks up on Fate (who was on a completely different planet at the time). The following episode establishes that something like that should be impossible, since the planets are twenty minutes apart from each other with the best available warp technology. [[spoiler:This is the first clue that he's actually two people. The fact that Lotte mentions in the very same conversation that she and Aria specialize in close and long range combat respectively makes it even more obvious in retrospect.]]
*** [[ChekhovsLecture Shamal mentions the existance of disguise magic in episode 8]].
*** [[spoiler:When they disguise themselves as Nanoha and Fate in episode 9, they get the colors of the Barrier Jackets wrong. This is because cats are colorblind.]]
* ''Anime/MagicalGirlLyricalNanohaStrikers'':
** In the first episode, Subaru only calls out for her father and sister during the airport fire, hinting at the fact that her mother is long dead.
** There are a lot of things that foreshadow the fact that Subaru and her sister [[spoiler: are cyborgs]].
*** Subaru is a walking ShoutOut to ''Anime/GaoGaiGar'', [[spoiler: the main character of which is a cyborg]].
*** Subaru's [[spoiler: super strength and eyesight]] in the prequel chapters of the manga.
*** Subaru was able to breathe in the middle of a burning building with only mild discomfort as a child.
*** Subaru never fights back whenever Teana roughhouse with her despite being the resident brawler of the group. [[spoiler:After all, [[SuperToughness it's not like Teana could actually hurt her]] even if she wanted to.]]
*** The two of them had a full power training match without the use of Barrier Jackets and neither of them were seriously injured despite Subaru being slammed into a tree.
*** The zipper on Subaru's Barrier Jacket is a golden ring in the shape of a [[SuperPrototype zero]] that is in front of a dark blue background, [[spoiler:just like the roman numerals on the [[QuirkyMinibossSquad Numbers']] outfits.]]
*** When they go for a physical, [[spoiler: the doctor is Mariel (an engineer who, in the previous season, had done work on Nanoha and Fate's devices).]]
*** When Subaru and Teana are writing up their reports following the first battle against [[QuirkyMinibossSquad the Numbers]], Subaru seems like she's going to bring something up ([[spoiler:presumably on the fact that the Numbers were cyborgs]]), only for Teana to flick her in the forehead and tell her not to worry about it. [[spoiler:It's revealed later on that [[SecretKeeper Teana already knew]] that Subaru is a cyborg and could tell she was going to draw a comparison.]]
** Vivio has OjouRinglets, which hints at the fact that [[spoiler: she's actually a clone of the [[CrystalDragonJesus Sankt Kaiser]].]]
** Nove uses Rollerblades and has the ability to create magical roadways in the air, just like Subaru and Ginga (she even share's Subaru's voice actress). [[spoiler: Turns out that she's a clone of Quint, just like them.]]
** When spending time with Vivio, Erio noted that [[ArtificialHuman artifical mages]] don't normally act the way she does. [[spoiler:He knows this because he's also an artificial mage.]]
** The series was incredibly unsubtle about the fact that Nanoha would eventually adopt Vivio, dating all the way back to their very first interaction when Vivio mumbled "mama" in her sleep as Nanoha was giving her a stuffed rabbit.
** Likewise, almost everything about Agito hinted that she would end up partnering with Signum, from their [[PurpleIsPowerful magic color]], to their [[PlayingWithFire Mana Conversion Affinity]], to their titles (Signum is known as the ''Knight of the Sword'' and ''General of the Raging Fire'', Agito is known as the ''Sword Spirit of the Raging Fire'').
* ''Anime/VividStrike'':
** Rinne's TransformationSequence has her basically covering her body in thorny vines, which hints at the fact that [[spoiler:most of her actions are self-punishment.]]

[[folder:''Mobile Suit GUNDAM'' and spin-offs]]
* ''[[Anime/MobileSuitGundamSeed Gundam SEED]]'' does this in the first ending sequence, which is essentially a wide shot of all the important characters: the crew of the Archangel, the 4 ZAFT pilots, and Lacus Clyne. However, there is ONE important character missing: Mwu La Flaga. Lt. Raimus happens to be staring at a soldier's helmet and a dog tag on a cross. The kicker? The ruins of the Strike Gundam in the background.
* The sequel series ''[[Anime/MobileSuitGundamSeedDestiny Gundam SEED Destiny]]'' also got in on this by showing the destroyed Freedom impaled by the Impulse's [[{{BFS}} anti-ship swords]].
* In the manga ''Anime/MobileSuitGundamWing: Battlefield of Pacifists'', Heero teased that Duo came along with him on a mission, because he got into a fight with Hilde. [[spoiler:Fastfoward to the ''Frozen Teardrop'' novel, Duo and Hilde are divorced.]]
* ''Anime/MobileSuitGundamTheWitchFromMercury'' has several details that foreshadow that [[spoiler:Ericht "Eri" Samaya and Suletta Mercury are ''not'' one and the same, and that [[PoweredByAForsakenChild the former]] [[BrainUploading had been uploaded]] by her/their mother Prospera Mercury into the Gundam Aerial. Twelve times, to be precise]].
** For starters, take a look at the name of the Gundam itself. Aerial. Remove a few letters, and whose name is left? ''Eri''. Not to mention that in Japanese, Aerial is spelled with the katakana "Eriaru", which translates to "Eri is here".
** Comparing the cockpit monitors of Lfrith and Aerial not only show them to be different, but the latter's OS shares [[SignificantMonogram its initials]] with Ericht Samaya.
** The most obvious instance (to the point that it might be construed as a WhamLine proper) occurs in Episode 6 when Prospera is confronted by her former colleague Belmeria, who remarks to her that "it's no use taking revenge for a ''21-year-old'' incident" (referring to the Vanadis Incident shown in the prologue). Suletta was supposedly four years old during the Vanadis Incident, and in the present is supposedly now 17 years old. Anyone who does the math should realize the numbers do not add up.
** In the lead up to one of Suletta's duels, Prospera says "I trust my darling daughter" when referring to Aerial. While one might initially presume she is referring to Suletta piloting Aerial, in hindsight [[spoiler:she could also be referring to Eri within Aerial]].
** Suletta addresses both Aerial and the GUND-Bits in an affectionate and humanizing manner. Case in point, she addresses the latter as "everyone", alluding to the fact that [[spoiler: each individual GUND-Bit is powered by a clone of Eri]]. In addition, during her duel with Elan, the latter (Elan) briefly perceives the GUND-Bits [[spoiler:as ethereal children]].
** Upon being shown an old presentation featuring the late Dr. Nabo, Suletta does not recognize her, despite the fact Eri had affectionately referred to her as "Granny" during the prologue.
** The music video for the first OP, "The Blessing", prominently features multiple scenes with both Suletta and Eri together, [[spoiler:hinting they are separate individuals]]. In the OP itself, the final shot (which is from Suletta's perspective) has a hand tap the monitor to show a faint image of Eri.
** The interquel novel ''Star of the Cradle'' is told from the first-person perspective of Aerial. As if the sudden reveal of Aerial being sentient is not enough, not only is the name Eri never mentioned, but Aerial refers to Prospera as her mother. The audio version even has Creator/KanaIchinose, Suletta's seiyuu, voice Aerial to further cement the implications.

[[folder:''Negima! Magister Negi Magi'']]
* Say, remember how in the early chapters of ''Manga/NegimaMagisterNegiMagi'', there was that [[spoiler:[[WarriorPrince Negi is a prince]]]] rumor that spread in Negi's class? Guess what's been revealed more than ''two hundred chapters'' later?
** Even better, the rumor is started by the Narutaki twins, [[spoiler:both of whom end up married to princes in the epilogue.]]
** Not to mention a statue, which also appears in that chapter, is quite closely related to [[spoiler: Negi's royal lineage. The mage just so happens to be Negi's direct ancestor, and the first Queen of Ostia.]]
** There's more. When Asakura first witnesses Negi's magic, she briefly wonders if he might be on a (genderflipped) version of a MagicalGirlQueenlinessTest, or that he may be a hero of justice or an alien. Negi was actually sent to Mahora as some sort of test, and [[spoiler:as the above spoiler shows, he's technically a royalty, so the MagicalGirlQueenlinessTest thing was partially correct. And then there's Negi's quest to become a hero like his father, fitting the hero of justice one. Lastly, his mother was born on Mars, so he's also technically an alien.]]
** Even earlier, there was the first time Negi's father is shown. The foreshadowing part is what ''appears'' to be the shadow on the right side of his face, which shows up again and is eventually revealed to be blood. It's subtle, but that hint of blood is the earliest hint of the GenreShift that the series would eventually undergo.
*** The same page shows Nekane on the ground behind Negi, which becomes more significant in Volume 8 when we find out that [[spoiler:she was petrified and her legs were shattered in Wilhelm's attack]].
** Chapter 29 has a scene where Negi and Chao have the exact same expression and mannerisms when listening to Yue's explanation. In chapter 82, Chao claims that Negi is her ancestor.
** Chapter 74, when Mana and Setsuna are tasked to capture a ghost (Note: Sayo), Mana exclaims that "she cannot escape her demon eye!". Guess what is revealed 225 chapters later?
** When Yue and Nodoka ask Negi if they could become mages, there's an imagine spot showing what they think it will look like. Some 140 chapters later, it turns out that their imaginations were spot on.
*** And that image spot continues to foreshadow "more than two hundred chapters later" (seems to be a theme for ''Negima'') as it may look a bit different, but we finally get to see Nodoka [[spoiler: confident and wielding a magical staff.]]
** Back in the "School Festival" Arc, Negi questions Chao about why she has an insane technique that drains the body and soul for unbelievable power. Cue the next major story arc where he learns an insane technique that drains body and soul for unbelievable power.
** From the [[http://img256.imageshack.us/img256/3818/9780099504177.jpg cover of Volume 3]], look at the logo on Negi's shirt. [[spoiler: It's the Ala Alba symbol]].
** Chapters 164 and 165 seem like just a humorous interlude, and perhaps the silliest moment is when Makie goes into the confessional only to complain that she can't think of any worries to get off her chest. 133 chapters later, [[spoiler:Makie is one of the only ones unaffected by a LotusEaterMachine, because she's so satisfied with her current life that the real world ''is'' her ideal world. Unexpectedly, Chisame is also unaffected, and suffers a HeroicBSOD at the thought of being just like Makie in that aspect.]]
** Ku Fei makes a joke about the number of Fate existed back in the day and shudders to think that there may be more. [[spoiler: In Chapter 311, guess ''how many'' showed up.]]
** At one point, Negi, Nodoka and Yue head into Library Island looking for Nagi. They are stopped in their search by a dragon, who ends up drooling on Nodoka and Yue, prompting Yue to state will will one day get her revenge on the dragon. Different dragon, but many chapters later, Yue proves her worth during her LaserGuidedAmnesia by her role in taking down a dragon.
* One of the earliest ones was smack in the beginning of the cover page of the first chapter. The small space between Negi and Asuna clearly shows [[spoiler: Zazie with long, sharp claws. More than two hundred chapters later we learn she is actually a demon.]]

[[folder:''Neon Genesis Evangelion'']]
* In the fourth episode of ''Anime/NeonGenesisEvangelion'', Shinji watches a BMovie about some sort of FreakLabAccident, with the characters lamenting how bad science has gone. And, well...
** He's actually watching a fictionalization of the [[TheEndOfTheWorldAsWeKnowIt Second Impact]], and the characters are lamenting science's inability to detect the deadly meteor before it struck. [[spoiler:The irony being that there was no meteor to detect, Second Impact was a man-made event.]]
** Let's not forget Ritsuko's lamenting on the Hedgehogs Dilemma. Some fans connect this with [[spoiler:Shinji's choice regarding [[AssimilationPlot Instrumentality]]]].
** In Episode 7, the head of a rival robotics manufacturer mockingly compares the [=EVA=]s to "A hysterical woman". [[spoiler: Then, much later, we find out that the [=EVA=]s each contain the soul of their respective pilot's deceased mother...]]
** In the opening sequence, we see many images of characters and plot important words. [[spoiler: After showing a picture of Kaworu and Rei, the word 'Angels' appears. Kaworu is explicitly an Angel and the vessel for Adam's soul, whereas Rei is the vessel for Lilith's soul and is implied to be at least [[HalfHumanHybrid part angel]].]] Plus a shot of Yui Ikari in profile, followed immediately by [[spoiler: a shot of a helmetless EVA-01 in profile.]] The credits, like the rest of the show, like to mess with your head.
** A bit of musical foreshadowing occurs during fight scenes. One of the Angel themes is titled "The Beast"; compare with whenever [[spoiler:EVA-01 goes berserk, the theme is titled "The Beast II", referencing how Evangelions are living beings.]]
** Evangelion is frequently abbreviated to Eva, which is the name in multiple languages of Eve; [[spoiler this foreshadows not only that all of the Evas except for Unit-01 are clones made from Adam's tissue, just as Eve was formed out of Adam's rib in [[Literature/BookOfGenesis Genesis]], but also foreshadows the revelation that the Evas contain the souls of the pilots' mothers, both through the link to the feminine name 'Eva' and with Eve being the ultimate mother of all humans.]]
** Episodes 15 and 16 set the tone for the last half of the series; Dark secrets start to come to light, character relations start to show instability (well, more than they already were), and otherwise takes a step back from the more upbeat atmosphere of the earlier episodes. Most telling of all is the violent return of a Berserk 01 at the end of ep. 16. It all sets the stage for the series' first major GutPunch, and the more infamous aspects of the show.

[[folder:''Pandora Hearts'']]
* ''Manga/PandoraHearts'' may as well be called Foreshadowing: The Manga. Examples include but are not limited to: Oz's strange and sudden attachment to Alice after having just met her ([[spoiler:[[ItMakesSenseInContext he was her stuffed rabbit doll one hundred years ago]]]]), Raven's gold eyes and black hair ([[spoiler:he's actually Gil ten years in the future]]), the state of decay undergone by the coming-of-age ceremony mansion ([[spoiler:ten years passed while Oz was trapped in the abyss]]), Gil's hardiness and fast recovery rate ([[spoiler:he's a Baskerville]]), Cheshire's single red eye [[spoiler:is actually Break's missing one]], Break's weak constitution and his tendency to cough up blood ([[spoiler:Mad Hatter is only his ''second'' chain, the first having resulted from an illegal contract]]), Jack's assertion that he's not a hero ([[spoiler:he's the villain]]), Alice's sense of foreboding on recovering certain memories ([[spoiler:they were the memories of when she killed herself to protect Oz]]), and even Oz's name ([[spoiler:he was named after Oswald-Glen by Alice one hundred years ago]]). 322Absolutely ''everywhere'' in ''Anime/PuellaMagiMadokaMagica'':
* Why are characters (especially Kyouko) often depicted eating something? What does cooking eggs have to do with the worth of a woman? When you rewatch the episodes after [[spoiler:you watch episode 10]], you're going to cringe at the Foreshadowing.
* During the girls' first (shown) conversation at Mami's apartment [[spoiler: there's an interesting shot where the reflection of Mami's head on the glass table is shown superimposed over her legs, as if it were lying in her lap.]] Come episode 3.... Later in that same conversation [[spoiler: there's another shot where Mami's entire torso is bisected by the glass, letting us know ''exactly'' how Charlotte eats her meals...]]
* In the very first episode, Madoka mentions having a dream about Homura before actually meeting her to Sayaka and Hitomi. Sayaka jokes about the two's fates being intertwined, having must met each other across time and space, and how {{Moe}} Homura is. [[spoiler: This takes on a new meaning in Episode 10, where it's revealed that Homura has gone through a GroundhogDayLoop to protect Madoka, and was originally a [[{{Meganekko}} bespectacled]] ShrinkingViolet with GirlishPigtails.]]
* In the films of the anime, when Sayaka [[spoiler: becomes a magical girl and saves Madoka]] a snippet of [[spoiler: [[WasOnceAMan Symposium Magarum]] is slipped into the otherwise spritely music of the scene]].
* There is '''even more''' for the sequel movie, ''Anime/PuellaMagiMadokaMagicaTheMovieRebellion'':
** Right after Homura's opening speech, we are being shown what looks very much like a witch's barrier. [[spoiler:The truth is far worse, as the entire Mitakihara City we see is in fact a witch's barrier]].
** The opening. The girls are all having fun, happy times, playing and generally being cheerful. Then Madoka reaches a hand out to Homura, and as Homura reaches back for her, Madoka turns into sand. Homura falls into despair, kneeling and crying, as the other magical girls dance happily (and unaware) around her. And then a black-winged silhouette bursts from Homura's shadow...
** Also during the opening, there is a shot of Homura, wearing a long frilly dress that hides her feet. 335to keep the fleeting miracle that I reached from collapsing\
Look, you'll stay by my side forever...]]''
*** Not to mention that part where it says "You touched my heart and it shined, turning so [[TitleDrop colorful]]". At the end of the movie, [[spoiler:Homura's soul gem does indeed turn colorful.]]
** At the very end of the opening, it shows Homura kneeling amidst some ruins in a desert, crying. [[spoiler:When Homulilly's Labyrinth is destroyed, Homura's body and Soul Gem/Grief Seed are shown in that exact location, surrounded by countless Incubators.]]
** The opening scene is a slow close-up of Homura's Soul Gem. The viewer may at first think it's a poetic device during the initial narration, but it's actually telling you the entire plot: this movie is happening inside that Soul Gem.
** Kazuko's discussion about the end of the world approaching. She mentions several ways it might happen. [[spoiler:The "world" ends when Homura's labyrinth collapses, then the whole universe ends when Homura takes control of it, and she mentions to Sayaka that she may destroy it a third time.]]
** Each magical girl has a different {{Leitmotif}} during their transformation sequence. Homura's is the odd one out, with a wind instrument being the most prominent instrument, rather than the violin that accompanies everyone else. It also sounds kind of sinister.
** During the transformation sequence, each magical girl has a different dance motif. Homura's is ballet. The first Nightmare fought also likes to do ballet.
** Against the first Nightmare, there are details that only Homura should know even after the series' finale; when the Nightmare charges through a door before the magical girls feed it, glimpse of environments from several witch barriers (Patricia's blue sky and clotheslines might be the most glaring) seen in Homura's OriginsEpisode appear. Also, the left middle finger of the hands that control the Nightmare's movement is covered in some sort of sheath and at its base is a ring. [[spoiler:The magical girls, including Homura, turn their soul gem into a ring on their left middle finger. In short, the Nightmare is controlled by a magical girl.]]
** Against [[spoiler:Hitomi's]] Nightmare, when Sayaka remarks that Kyosuke is such an ungrateful boyfriend and Kyoko calls her out for being surprisingly cynical, Sayaka says she learns from "experience". In fact, Sayaka in general is a large source of foreshadowing; she's calmer and wiser, also carrying herself with confidence and experience that she doesn't possess in the series with none of the angst. [[spoiler:She's one of Ultimate Madoka's secretaries that came after being ushered by the Law of Cycles, possessing knowledge of the witch universe.]]
** After [[spoiler:Hitomi's]] Nightmare, all the non-named characters are rendered [[FacelessMasses without a face]], while at the beginning everyone had one. [[spoiler: The fact the shift (marking the first cracks in the illusion) happens only after Homura starts feeling that something isn't right is the first hint that she's somehow connected to said illusionary world, and later that she's the witch generating the barrier.]]
** When Homura convinces Kyoko to test her theory by checking Kazamino, in the background there are girls in funeral garb sitting around a street musician in the usual witch-like cardboard cut-out style. [[spoiler:Not only it's a sign that the story takes place inside a Witch barrier, those girls are Homulilly's elite familiars. Their behaviors are mirroring Homura's state of mind, and most of Homura's true intentions in the ending are coming from them.]]
** In the tea party in Mami's house before Homura and Mami have a violent confrontation, when Mami walks to the kitchen to make more tea, you can see her yellow ribbon trailing behind her when she walks behind Homura.
** Pay close to attention to what Bebe says -- not the subtitles, but the actual sounds she's making -- when [[spoiler:Homura begins to interrogate her.]] She clearly starts saying [[spoiler:"Kyubey".]]
** After Homura monologuing her dislike of Mami's StepfordSmiler tendency to hide her fragile mind, and by proxy becomes an obstacle to her mission of saving Madoka, Bebe pleads to her to stop holding her grudge, instead of being clueless like she usually is. [[spoiler:Like Sayaka, Bebe -- or Nagisa, to be precise -- is another of Ultimate Madoka's secretaries.]]
** [[spoiler:Homura's]] familiars can be heard chanting "Gott ist tot!", a quote from Creator/FriedrichNietzsche about how [[spoiler:humanity killed god and has to become god thyself]]. Cue the end of the movie...
** Included in the [[FreezeFrameBonus runes]], [[EasterEgg naturally]]. Not only are the Nightmares' backgrounds full of ballerinas, their accompanying runes spell out [[spoiler:Homulilly as this world's creator.]] During the TransformationSequence, [[spoiler:Homura's runes don't spell out her name, but instead her pleas for death.]]
** [[invoked]]The Cake Song. A sweet dream begins when [[spoiler:Madoka is split, like a melon.]] More details on the Fridge page under FridgeBrilliance.
** Pay ''very close attention'' to Homura's conversation with Madoka in the flower field. [[spoiler:No, Homura is not upset Madoka cares about other people. Homura is upset to find Madoka never would want to sacrifice herself the way she did at the end of the anime. In fact, she changes her mind about accepting Madoka's sacrifice, which leads to the events at the end of the movie. It becomes especially cruel when you realize that the illusory world's Madoka [[LaserGuidedAmnesia doesn't have the memories of the real one]], and thus doesn't know why she would ever make such a sacrifice when Homura asks her about it, as well as the fact that Homura (unintentionally or otherwise) left out a lot of essential details anyway.]]
** There are numerous scenes when Kyubey enters and Bebe shoots him a hostile look or even growls at him. It may look like [[HeadbuttingHeroes some kind of jealousy or rivalry between the two]], but [[spoiler:Kyubey is an enemy to Nagisa, and she is trying to put a stop to him.]].

[[folder:''Sailor Moon'']]
* In the ''Manga/SailorMoon'' manga, Chibi-Usa creates a clay replica of the Holy Grail two chapters before the real thing is introduced. The clay Grail subplot also exists in TheNineties [[Anime/SailorMoon anime]], but the search for the Holy Grail is made the entire focal plot point of that arc in the anime, so it loses some of its foreshadowing properties. Ironically, Chibi-Usa's decision to give her clay Grail to Hotaru in the manga foreshadows Sailor Moon's decision to give the real grail to Hotaru in the anime.
* In the anime, Motoki notices in an early episode that Luna has been coming in and out of the arcade for a while. A few episodes later, it's revealed Luna has a base set up there.
* While ''R'' isn't subtle about who Chibiusa's parents are, one episode has her walking hand in hand with Usagi and Mamoru and stating it feels right somehow. More tellingly, later in the episode when Rei replaces Usagi, Chibiusa notes it doesn't feel right. And indeed, Usagi and Mamoru are her parents in the future.
* In ''Super S'', Fish Eye has a fear of cats and Chibiusa comments that Fish Eye's dancing gives a cold vibe like a fish. Fish Eye's true form is revealed to be a fish.

[[folder:''Satou Kashi No Dangan Wa Uchinukenai'']]
* ''Manga/SatouKashiNoDanganWaUchinukenai'':
** Umino Mokozu insists she is a mermaid who must return to the ocean, after making a 'true friend', before an upcoming once-a-decade storm or she will die. The whole thing comes off as a metaphor. [[spoiler:The needed a friend to help her escape from her [[AbusiveParents abusive dad]] before it's too late. Alas it [[OffingtheOffspring was too late]] in the end]].
** Mokuzu's name means "scraps of seaweed from the sea". It's an odd name and classmates even wonder what type of parent would name their kid such a name. It'd make sense for a mermaid at least... [[spoiler:Mokuzu's dad had been abusing her from infancy, to the point where she has a permanent limp due to a hip injury received as a baby and a broken eardrum which leaves her deaf in one ear. An abusive dad like him would be the type to name his kid such a name]].
** In the very first chapter, right after her introduction, Mokuzu trips and Nagisa sees bruises under her skirt. A few pages later we see she walks with a limp, which she states is due to the witch that turned her into human. [[spoiler:Both are due to abuse]].
** Mokuzu's father once wrote a song that [[SecondVerseCurse no one remembers the last verse to]]. In that verse it turns out the man killed and dismembered his mermaid friend. [[spoiler:Guess what he did to his daughter]].

[[folder:''School Live'']]
''Manga/SchoolLive'':
* Several hints were shown before TheReveal that [[spoiler:Megu-nee is [[DeadAllAlong not what she appears to be]]]] like how she got into the toilet that Yuki's in even though it's locked from the inside. Everyone tends to have {{Delayed Reaction}}s towards her and the other characters often cut her off mid-sentence. A chapter before [[spoiler:Megu-nee is officially revealed as dead]] we get foreshadowing by her ominous ApocalypticLog about how she doesn't care what happens to her as long as the kids are safe.
* In the first episode's opening, the only time you see other students is in Yuki's parts. Additionally, once we get to the first episode itself, any student that isn't interacting directly with Yuki is white and featureless...but most anime fans would ignore that, since that's a common way to draw unimportant characters. In hindsight, you realize that it's because [[spoiler:Yuki probably imagines the people interacting with her more vividly than those she assigns as "set dressing".]] Also before {{The Reveal}} near the end of episode 1, several hints are shown in Miki's facial expression when interacting with Yuki when finding Taromaru, such as [[spoiler: forced apologies and late reactions when breaking in Yuki's class.]]
* Taromaru was removed from the episode 9 ending credits part when Yuki wakes up. [[spoiler: In next episode, we learn that he was bitten by Megu-nee in the basement and became a zombie]].
* The knife that Rii would have used [[spoiler:to kill a now-infected Kurumi]] has always been a part of the graphics accompanying her in the opening.
* Yuuri's [[spoiler:SanitySlippage]] was foreshadowed twice beforehand. [[spoiler:She was first shown to be more mentally fragile than Miki and Kurumi when she completely freaked out at having to [[KillTheOnesYouLove possibly kill Kurumi.]] Later she became a sobbing, screaming mess when the rescue helicopter crashed.]] Both are realistic reactions however in a manga where [[AngstWhatAngst things are taken with stride]] it's noticeable this was foreshadowing for something.

''Manga/TalentlessNana''
* When Nana is being chased by a horde of zombies controlled by [[spoiler:Sasaki Yuka]], she takes shelter in a decrepit shack and is seen nailing a board over the hole in the door. She ends up locked inside as the bolt-lock is on the outside. [[spoiler:She escapes said prison and fools Sasaki by removing the screws of the bolt-lock and covering it up with duct-tape, which you can see in earlier panels.]]
* When Nana is shopping for [=MP3=] players with recording capabilities, she's seen holding up two boxes of the same model. 385[[/folder]]

[[folder:''Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann'']]
* ''Anime/TengenToppaGurrenLagann'' has a bit pretty early, and about halfway through: The first major time is when Kamina says "Simon, without you, I'll die." Guess what happens in episode 7 and 8 where they have separate objectives (Kamina and the rest of the Gurren-dan were to distract the enemy, so Simon could use Lagann to take over the Dai-Gunzan). The second time is in episode 15, when Simon has just killed the Spiral King, Lordgenome. Lordgenome then warns Simon about what will happen when the population reaches a million. Guess what happens in episode 17 (albeit 7 years had passed between episode 15 and 17, so people had forgotten the warning).
** A subtle one occurs in the second episode. After having just broken out onto the surface, and faced with ''another'' Gunman, Simon starts to run away from it, not wanting to fight a machine bigger than theirs. Kamina, having just made another defiant speech, just watches Simon as they flee and calmly asks, "When are you going to stop running, Simon?" This is followed up in Episode 7, during the team's first fight against General Thymilph. It's Simon who figures out how to win the battle, and Kamina pointedly crosses his arms, giving his little bro full control over Gurren Lagaan. (When the enemy curses Kamina's name for their defeat, he nonchalantly replies "Hey, that wasn't me.") One of the pivotal points of the series is Simon becoming TheDeterminator after [[spoiler:Kamina's death]], carrying the Dai-Gurren to the end of the series.

[[folder:''Tiger and Bunny'']]
* In ''Anime/TigerAndBunny'', there's a curious tendency throughout the series for Barnaby's {{Troubled Backstory Flashback}}s to be a bit inconsistent with each other -- such as the same event taking place in different settings, or a person's clothing/appearance changing ever-so-slightly from one flashback to the next. This is one of the first hints that [[spoiler:someone's been [[FakeMemories messing around with his memory.]]]]

* ''Anime/WhenMarnieWasThere'':
** Anna has blue eyes. This is foreshadowing that she is of mixed ancestry. [[spoiler:Who else has blue eyes? Marnie, who turns to be Anna's grandmother.]]
** Marnie dresses in a vintage fashion that resembles styles from the early to mid 20th century. It's unusual for a girl her age but not particularly unheard of, and it establishes her [[GirlyGirlAndTomboy the girly girl to Anna's tomboy]]. [[spoiler:It also foreshadows that Marnie is DeadAllAlong and not a modern child]].

[[folder:''Yamada-kun and the Seven Witches'']]
* Despite that the writer, Miki Yoshikawa, claims that she improvises a lot of the story, ''Manga/YamadaKunAndTheSevenWitches'' has several examples:
** Miyamura easily [[SpottingTheThread spots the thread]] and makes Yamada reveal the secret about his body-swap with Shiraishi. Much later it's revealed that the whole reason why he transferred himself to Suzaku High in the first place is because he knew about the witch powers. Another hint is that when Yamada tells the other club members about the witches the first time, Miyamura - unlike Shiraishi and Itou - doesn't seem surprised about the existence of witches; he only acts interested in one of the specific powers.
** Tamaki wonders if there might be someone with a "paste power" - since Yamada has the copy power, and he himself has the "cut power" (steal power). That someone turns out to be himself. Entirely logical, of course, since you can't paste anything without having cut or copied it first.
** The revelation that Nancy's witches aren't actually the new seven witches, but have always existed along with the original seven witches, threw both the student council and the readers for a loop - but when you reread the start of the second witch war, you may notice how some of these "new" witches seemed way too accustomed to their powers. If it was only a couple of weeks since they got their powers, most of them probably wouldn't even have discovered their powers (since it does take a kiss to discover them, after all), and those who did discover them already would probably have [[HowDoIShotWeb struggling to learn to use them]] instead of already having made lifestyles out of them like [[FortuneTeller Chikushi]] and [[MemoryWipingCrew Nancy herself]].
** The revelation that not only Itou, but also Shiraishi, was put under Ichijo's power was also hinted. A few chapters before the revelation, Shiraishi shows an unusual amount of jealousy (almost to ClingyJealousGirl levels) when Tsubaki speculates that Itou might have developed feelings for Yamada.
** When Yamada and co. meet Kaori, they speculate that she might be the final witch in Nancy's group. She's eventually revealed to not be a witch, but there was already a subtle hint about it since her name doesn't follow the ColorfulThemeNaming of the other witches in Nancy's group.
** After the second memory wipe, Ushio can be seen reading a book about poetry. Much later, he founds a poetry club along with Noa.

[[folder:''Your Lie In April'']]
* Several in the first half of ''Manga/YourLieInApril''. It becomes more and more obvious as the show goes on, especially on a second watch. Majority of them foreshadow things about [[spoiler: Kaori]].
** Episode 2. [[spoiler:Kaori's left hand starts shaking after asking for Kousei's opinion about her performance. She is also the [[FourIsDeath fourth]] performer to play.]]
** Episode 3. [[spoiler:Kaori's stop at a hospital.]]

** Episode 5. Kaori's words after finishing their duet performance: [[spoiler:"I won't forget, even if I die"]].
** Episode 11:
*** Opens with a seemingly unrelated superhero genre clip where the narration mentions that [[spoiler:heroes are lonely and end up alone. Takeshi sees Kousei as his hero... and Kousei ends up alone at the end.]]
*** Kaori embracing and apologizing to her violin because she dropped it [[spoiler:when she collapsed]].
--->"I'm sorry. As someone who dropped you, I don't deserve to be a violinist. I'm sorry, ''please bear with me for just a little longer''."
** The scene featuring two hands holding each other and an opened envelope on a piano in the second opening. [[spoiler:Both of them revealed in final episode: Kousei's love for Kaori is indeed reciprocal, and the opened envelope encased Kaori's letter explaining it all.]]
** Episode 12.
*** Kaori's parents' attitude toward Kousei. [[spoiler: Despite Kousei just meeting them for the first time, they already have a very good impression of him because Kousei is the only reason Kaori is still motivated to live her short life.]]
*** When Kashiwagi asks about what kind of high school Kousei and Kaori will be attending, Kaori replies with an uncertain answer about her future [[spoiler:while her handheld fireworks shut off prematurely compared with the others' fireworks which remains lit]].
*** [[spoiler:Kaori missing the gala concert.]]
** Episode 13. [[spoiler: Kaori is hospitalized again, with her faded hair color and paler skin indicating her disease is getting worse. Later, the gang visits Kaori and brings her a bag full of books to read, but as they leave, she says: "I don't have time to read all these..."]]
** Episode 16.
*** [[spoiler: Kaori dropping the drink Kousei gives her.]]
*** The camera lingers on a copy of ''Ichigo Doumei/Alliance'' by Masahiro Mita while Kaori quotes from it, [[spoiler:a love story which ends tragically for the ill girl.]]
** Episode 17: When Kousei is saying that he didn't want to hear Ravel, the music being played is [[spoiler:Pavane for a Dead Princess.]]
** If you listen to full version of Kirameki (first ed song), you'll come across these lyrics foreshadowing later events:
-->[[spoiler: You're no longer here by my side, I'm well aware of that. Even then, I glanced back once more, thinking that you called out to me. And the times we spent together, are all irreplaceable in my heart, I'll treasure these memories you gave me, so thank you, and good bye]]

* In ''Anime/YuGiOhCapsuleMonsters'', when Yugi and Tea are playing Capsule Monsters at school, Tea pits her Happy Lover against Yugi's Celtic Guardian. When they end up in the real version of the game, their first monsters are Happy Lover and Celtic Guardian.
* In [[Anime/{{YuGiOh}} the series proper]], Yami Bakura gives a BadassBoast in response to Yami Marik's gloating after the latter wins their duel, and laughs out loud as he is banished to the Shadow Realm. It's not until the very last season that we find out why Yami Bakura is so unfazed by banishment to the Shadows and how he seems to keep returning so effortlessly, and his boast takes on a terrifying reality...
-->'''Yami Marik:''' Prepare to enter the darkness at the hands of Ra!
-->'''Yami Bakura/[[spoiler:[[GodOfEvil Zorc Necrophades]]]]:''' Don't you realize that I ''am'' the darkness?
* In ''Anime/YuGiOhGX'', Daitoukuji makes mention of Juudai's true power sleeping in season one. Then, Kagemaru insists that he must duel Juudai to gain his power over Duel Spirits and attain eternal youth. 450[[folder:''Yuri Is My Job!'']]
* Hime notices that Mitsuki's eyes look very similar to her former friend's. It turns out that Mitsuki is Hime's old friend.
* Kanoko's briefly shown taking a picture of Hime on her smartphone, establishing that she doesn't just find Hime cute, but has a crush on her.
* Apart from Mai and Sumika, whose real last names aren't shown, the other salon employees' assumed last names are similar to their real ones. Since Hime Shiraki becomes Hime Shirasagi, and Kanoko Mamiya becomes Kanoko Amamiya, it isn't hard to see that Mitsuki Ayanokouji is actually Mitsuki Yano.
* When Kanoko is talking with Hime about Sumika while in the kitchen, referring to Sumika as a gyaru, it touches a nerve with Nene, who tells them not to talk about Sumika behind her back, and saying that Sumika comes in early and stays late. All this suggests that Nene is familiar with Sumika, [[spoiler:as her former schwester]].

** Waka not turning red when fighting Yon wasn't EarlyInstallmentWeirdness, [[spoiler:it's because Alula wasn't in control.]]
* [[ItWasHisSled Misuzu's fate]] in ''VisualNovel/{{AIR}}'' gets foreshadowed a lot by Yukito's remarks. The viewer then gets fed false hope when things ''seem'' to be alright after the "last dream", but it all ends pretty much as predicted.
* ''Anime/ArabianNightsAdventuresOfSinbad'': In the very first episode, Sinbad dreams of a beautiful girl laughing and when he wakes up, he sees Shera laughing. Shera's is later revealed to be a human turned into a bird.
* ''Manga/AstraLostInSpace'':
** Aries once says to Charce that they could have been father and daughter in a previous life. [[spoiler:If you count their genetic originators as a previous life, then yes they have been--Seira (Aries's originator) is the Vixian King's (Charce's) daughter.]]
** While the crew relaxes and hunts on Arispade, Charce wears a "Kingdom of Vixia" t-shirt. [[spoiler:That's where he comes from.]]
* In ''Literature/{{Baccano}} The Grand Punk Railroad'', Isaac and Miria have a conversation about [[IAmNotShazam the name of Frankenstein's monster]], with Isaac insisting that the monster's name was actually Mary Wolstonecraft Godwin Shelly. When Miria points out that Mary is a girl's name and that the monster was male, Isaac counters that [[GenderBlenderName men sometimes have feminine names]] and there's no telling what sort of name a monster would have. [[spoiler:As it turns out, the entire conversation is a nod to the true identity of the Rail Tracer (a monster slowly offing people inside the train), who is revealed to be a male assassin named Claire.]]
* In ''Manga/BarefootGen'', on the morning of [[UsefulNotes/AtomicBombingsOfHiroshimaAndNagasaki Monday, August 6, 1945]], one of the Hiroshima locals comments on the weather, saying that "it'll be real hot by afternoon."
* A few occasions in the anime ''Anime/BlueReflectionRay'' shows a mysterious "snow" falling. Ruka even questions it in the first episode. The "snow" is a [[ApocalypseHow world ending event]] known as "ash" which eventually destroys all of humanity, except for a handful of young girls who are sheltered so they can restore the world. These events become the centeral focus of the videogame followup, ''VideoGame/BlueReflectionSecondLight.''
* There's quite a few moments of foreshadowing in the original ''Manga/ChronoCrusade'' manga that made it into the anime, only to never have the payoff work out thanks to the GeckoEnding. This includes Chrono's UnstoppableRage tendencies becoming a major plot point, to Rosette's watch causing her to appear as a ghost to people in the Order later being a key to [[spoiler:raising her from the dead]].
* In ''VisualNovel/{{Clannad}}'', you will not be able to hear Nagisa's first line in the same way again [[spoiler: when you watch Episode 16 of the second series, and everything that comes after]].
-->'''Nagisa''': Do you like this school? I love it, very, very much. But nothing can stay unchanged. Fun things, happy things, all of these things will eventually change. Even then, can you still love this place?
* In ''Anime/CodeGeass'', a tiny detail in the fifth episode foreshadows the ending of the entire series. Lelouch fiddles with a chessboard as he delivers the line "When somebody wins, the fighting will end," [[spoiler:and moves the white knight to "kill" the black king.]] This foreshadows [[spoiler:how he arranges for his own death at Suzaku's hands, as the two chess pieces had already been associated with their respective characters.]]
* ''Manga/DeathNote'' takes this to the next level. In the first episode, Ryuk tells Light "When you die, I'll be the one writing your name in a Death Note". In the last episode, Light [[spoiler: survives several gunshots, only to be killed by Ryuk writing his name in the Death Note. ]]
* ''Manga/DeliciousInDungeon'':
** [[spoiler: The first time Falin holds Kensuke, it immediately jumps out of her hands. Up til then, Kensuke had only rattled or moved when confronted with a powerful enemy monster. 476** [[spoiler: The motif of a winged lion is everywhere in the dungeon, from statues to carvings to LivingArmor, even on the upper levels. It turns out this was hinting at a real creature: the winged lion that guards the people of the Golden Kingdom and is part of the prophecy that might see the Lunatic Magician beaten for good.]]
* When Haruko first hits Naota with her guitar in ''Anime/{{FLCL}}'', she yells "lunch time!" and in the final episode what does she do to Naota? [[spoiler: She yells "lunch time" and feeds him to the terminal core.]] Doubles as a CallBack.
* ''Manga/FruitsBasket'': In Chapter 2, a landslide buries Tohru's tent which she set up illegally in the Sohma estate. Shigure comments that landslides are common in the area. [[spoiler:In Chapter 121, Tohru falls off a cliff that suddenly crumbles. It's in the Sohma estate, and might even be the same place where her tent was buried.]]
* In ''Manga/GirlFriends2006'', at the start of the new term near the end of the series, some of the class notes that [[SenseiChan Naru-chan]] has put on some weight. A few chapters later, it turns out that [[spoiler:she's been pregnant for some time]].
* ''Manga/GoodNightWorld'':
** There are a couple hints towards the reveal about Shiro and AAAAA being the in-game avatars of Taichiro's father Kojiro and younger brother Asuma respectively in the first episode:
*** Kojiro is established to be having back pain bad enough to make changing a lightbulb a burden in his debut scene. May later needs to tell Ichi (Taichiro's avatar) and AAAAA that Shiro won't be logging in due to needing to go to the hospital.
*** Soon after AAAAA needs to log off to do something, Taichiro's ''PLANET'' session gets interrupted by Asuma informing him that Kojiro had to go to the hospital for a hernia.
** Kojiro at some point mentions that the suicide rate of AIs based on the memories of real people is 99%. The remaining 1%, which would mean the existence of at least one self-aware AI, becomes relevant later on.
* Chapter 404 of ''Manga/HayateTheCombatButler'' provides the most concrete and definitive example yet in the series. During a conversation with Ruka, Hayate says that[[spoiler: he doesn't plan to be Nagi's butler forever and will quit the day that his debt is paid off and Nagi can live on her own]]. And as he says this the panel shows the wind blowing a calender resulting in a close up of the date [[spoiler: December 24th]], confirming a [[BookEnds popular fan-theory]] for when the series would end.
* ''Manga/HenkyouNoRoukishiBardLoen'': Bard can't accept Simon Epibalez's gold as a reward for saving him, so he takes a small amount and uses his fingerprint as a signature in case he'll need the rest. [[spoiler:Fingerprinting happens to be the way to identify that Joulran Tersia, and not Kaldus's imposter Zeon, is the heir of the royal dynasty.]]
* In ''Manga/{{Judge}}'', when the injured, unknown man sees Hiro, he begins to scream in horror. This actually hints that Hiro isn't as good as one is supposed to believe. [[spoiler: Turns out he's right, Hiro is one of the masterminds behind the creation of the ''Judge'' game and likely one of the two who severely injured the man.]]
* ''Manga/JujutsuKaisen'':
** When Geto makes his first appearance in the main story, he has stitches along his head. While it could initially be chalked up to him making a recovery after [[spoiler: Gojo confronts him in Volume 0]], it actually serves the reveal later that [[spoiler: the dead Geto had his brain swapped with that of someone else]].
** Early on, Megumi expresses an interest in using Cursed Tools to compliment his fighting style when talking to the second-years, and is briefly shown using his technique to put his fingers in his own shadow. [[spoiler: When fighting Hanami over 30 chapters later, he reveals Cursed Tools he's stored within his shadows for him and Maki to use]].
** Itadori displays an abnormal, unexplained resistance to poison when fighting Junpei early on. It can very easily be dismissed as Junpei simply being too weak to affect him, or Itadori using HeroicWillpower. Later in his fight with Eso and Kechizu it's explained that [[spoiler: Sukuna, as the King of Curses, is immune to all poisons, making Itadori immune by extension]].
* ''Manga/KarakuriCircus'':
** The manga depicts Dean as a master of altering appearances, foreshadowing the reveal that [[spoiler:he's the same person as Commander Faceless.]]
** During the Interrogation arc, Shoji says Sadayoshi must be killed only after realizing his mistakes. This happens exactly in the final arc when [[spoiler:Diamantina indirectly kills Faceless for refusing to love her and her alone after her obsessive love brought him back to sanity.]]
* Oburi is hit by a basketball thrown by a little girl near the beginning of ''Anime/{{Kite}}'', in the process splashing water on the back of his coat. At the end of the series, he walks past the same little girl as she innocently bounces a basketball off of the wall... right before she nonchalantly pulls out a gun and shoots him in ''almost exactly the same spot''.
* ''[[Manga/{{Lady}} Lady Lady]]'': [[spoiler: In the theme song, Lynn has an ImagineSpot where she dances with her crush Arthur when they're both grown up. However, while Arthur looks the same, ImagineSpot!Lynn has long, thin hair and rounder eyes, and looks like ''Sarah''. In the end of the anime, it is Sarah who is Arthur's eventual love interest, not Lynn.]]
* ''Manga/LandOfTheLustrous'':
** When Cairngorm is taken to Sensei to be given a new identity, Sensei stares strangely at them and examines them in order to give them their new name. Much attention is paid to Sensei's eye as this is happening, as it glints unlike the other Gems. [[spoiler:A robot gathering information might do that as well. Later revelations point to the glint in Sensei's eye being him noticing leftover inclusions from Ghost]].
** There is a strange pause in the middle of Sensei's recap of the Vetricosus incident--he completely skips over Phos learning about the three races descending from humans. [[spoiler:Later revelations show that Sensei cannot physically talk about humans beause any humanity-related information is classified without a person's permission.]]
** Post-winter, Sensei tells Phos that the gem would have to become stronger than him, enough to handle a whole squad by themselves in order to overcome their handicaps. [[spoiler:Phos not only became one of the strongest of the current Gems, but also became capable of fighting their former teammates singlehandedly.]]
** Sensei's name itself is a dead giveaway. [[spoiler: Kongou is the hardest substance in the world, but it is also mythical and, in other words, does not occur in nature.]]
** While Sensei is standing at the cliff dropping shards into the sea, [[spoiler:sound effects indicating mechanical whirring and movement can be seen, albeit small]].
** When Ventricosus is leading Phos to their home, they tell the latter to toss the bowl used to carry them, only for Phos to reply that they'd certainly get in trouble if they didn't bring it home. There's then a silent panel of Ventricosus smiling oddly, most likely [[spoiler:in a pitying way, knowing that their plan doesn't involve Phos going home]].
** Rutile's early explanation of inclusions foreshadows big time to Phos' late game plans, as well as what happened to the captured gems:
--->''If we shatter, as long as we can gather back the pieces, they can close the wounds and bring us back to life... Even if we're [[spoiler:ground into powder, mixed with earth, or sunk to the bottom of the ocean...]]''
** After the failure of the first Night Raid, Cairngorm warns Phos to start taking others into consideration or else they were going to end up alone. [[spoiler:Come the end of the second Night Raid, Phos has broken Sensei in a last minute selfish command, as well as had all the Lustrous broken just to get to Sensei in the first place. As a result, the Gem is left completely alone on Earth once the Lunarians come to collect everybody.]]
** There is a lot of talk about [[spoiler:becoming Lunarians]] coming from the side of [[spoiler:the Moon Gems]] before the big reveal in Chapter 95. [[spoiler:Cairngorm desired it because they wanted to be more intimate with Aechmea, Amethyst 84 considered working with inclusions to transform Gems into Lunarians, and during the final raid Aechmea brings up the ice crystals of the moon they're on and how Gem inclusions prefer pure crystals to house in. We later find out that Gem inclusions have gathered up in that exact hole, which they use as a basis for creating Lunarian bodies for the Gems.]]
* In the [[Manga/TheLegendOfZeldaAkiraHimekawa manga adaptation]] of ''VideoGame/TheLegendOfZeldaPhantomHourglass'', when the heroes find the mysterious girl, Linebeck immediately assumes that she’s actually a monster. [[spoiler: That’s because the Cubus Sister pulled that trick on him]].
* In Episode 15 of ''Literature/LogHorizon'', Isuzu tries to add Rudy to her friends list, but it doesn't work. This is because Rudy is a Person of the Land (read: NPC), something that is ultimately revealed after [[spoiler:Rudy [[HeroicSacrifice sacrifices himself to save Tohya]] [[KilledOffForReal and revival spells won't work on him]]]]. The idea that an NPC could become an adventurer was itself foreshadowed by Princess Lenessia during the same arc; while she doesn't quite ''become'' an adventurer, she does get equipped with armor and a weapon, showing that it's possible.
* In ''Anime/MartianSuccessorNadesico'', half of the major plot points for the show are foreshadowed by the ShowWithinAShow Gekiganger 3, such as [[spoiler:Gai Daigoji's death and even predicting the end episode being pretty lackluster]].
* Happening very early in the anime adaptation of ''Literature/MoribitoGuardianOfTheSpirit'', some kids are singing "The Nahji Song/Song of the Nahji", which represents events that happened in the past, and those to come.
* ''Anime/TheMysteriousCitiesOfGold'': In the second season's first episode's flashback, [[BigBad Zares]] captures Mayuca, the Inca who helped the kids out in the first season. Now, if you rewatch S1, you'll note that Gomez and Gaspar ended up blocking all ground routes leading into the City of the High Peak, where Mayuca lives. So it shouldn't come as a surprise when it's revealed that Zares owns a flying machine.
* In ''Literature/OutbreakCompany'', Shinichi Kanou, the queen Petralka, and the group are held hostage in the newly built, and desegregated, school of Eldant by terrorists who have threatened them for introducing Japan's Otaku culture to their world to all races under the idea that it destroys Eldant's values and traditions, something Shinichi calls the terrorist leader out on. In spite of that, as the leader prepares to kill Shinichi as a warning to Japan and the empire, Patralka stops him by spinning a lie that Shinichi and Minori are nothing more than pawns of Japan and that killing either of them wouldn't harm Japan in any way, [[spoiler:until it's revealed that it wasn't.]] Jinzaburō Matoba, the government worker responsible for hiring Shinichi Kanou and the one in charge of subjugating Eldant through otaku culture, expresses this to Shinichi when he confronts him on how otaku culture is slowly corrupting the Eldant citizens via an addiction. [[spoiler:When Kanou realizes that this was intentional, Matoba breaks Kanou down by revealing him disposable if he defies the government and when he does, Matoba sneakily covers Japan's intentions all the while setting up Kanou's many assassination attempts, something Minori later reveals would've likely been a task carried out by her as Shinichi's "bodyguard".]]
* ''Anime/PantyAndStockingWithGarterbelt'' appears to end with an AssPull, but the reveal that [[spoiler:Stocking was actually a demon and EvilAllAlong]] was actually cleverly foreshadowed in the form of pop culture references, among the many others present in the series. In the ''Transformers'' homage episode, she became the Megatron expy, while the music video segment had (among the dozens of music references) a brief homage to Music/{{Gorillaz}}, where she imitated Murdoc Niccals, the Satanist and TokenEvilTeammate.
* InUniverse example in ''Literature/ThePetGirlOfSakurasou''; Sorata took his taking in the pure white cat (which caused him to be sent to [[DysfunctionJunction Sakura-sou]]) as one for his meeting Mashiro--as her name means "Pure White."
* ''Anime/PrincessMononoke'': After San is temporarily incapacitated during a fight, Lady Eboshi warns her men that she's still dangerous with the words, "If you cut off a wolf's head, it can still bite." Now try to guess what rips Eboshi's arm clean off late in the movie. Also, while fighting Ashitaka, Eboshi declares, "Why don't I just cut the damn thing off?" in regards to his cursed arm.
* ''Anime/PrincessTutu'' has foreshadowing ''all over'' the series, to the point where it'd be pointless to list them all here. They include [[ChekhovsGunman background characters becoming important later]], several details about the fictional fairytale ''The Prince and the Raven'' and Fakir's fear of crows/death.
* The fact Yuuta from ''Anime/PunchLine'' is [[spoiler:a boy [[FreakyFridayFlip in a female body]]]] is foreshadowed by [[spoiler:his [[CrossdressingVoices female voice actress]]]] and a flashback in episode 5 where [[spoiler:he looks like a little girl]].
* ''Anime/RahXephon'', owing to its JigSawPuzzlePlot, has tons of moments like this. Megumi casually mentioning Haruka's old boyfriend is one.
* ''Anime/ReadOrDie'':
** You'd surely never see it coming: at the beginning of the OAV, Yomiko wakes up and hums [[Music/LudwigVanBeethoven Beethoven's]] "Ode to Joy"; later on, it's revealed that the true threat is Clone Beethoven and his Suicide Symphony.
** When Joker first fills in Yomiko on the robbery of the DNA of famous people, a list of the individuals whose DNA was stolen is shown behind him. The name on the bottom of the list is [[spoiler: Mata Hari]].
* There's about a million examples in ''Anime/RevolutionaryGirlUtena'', but one in particular happens during the FreakyFridayFlip episode. Utena makes an off-hand remark about how she feels like she's gotten caught up in a bizarre ritual, and that she hopes she can get out before someone is [[HumanSacrifice sacrificed]]. It turns out that's [[spoiler:''exactly'' what Akio has been using Anthy for, and he's trying to build Utena up to replace her.]]
* ''Manga/{{Semelparous}}'': In early chapters, the local news reports that on people dying of sudden heart attacks. Later it's revealed that the {{kaiju}} are bioengineered war machines that have humans from the AlternateUniverse in their heads controlling them, and when the human inside is killed, so is their {{Doppelganger}} on this side. Yorino realizes this after one of her friends dies suddenly, while Youko killed her own sister's double.
* ''Manga/ShadowsHouse'':
** Early in the story, Emilico asks Kate if she is human. Kate deflects the question. [[spoiler: Much later in the story, it's revealed that she genuinely isn't sure herself due to the unique circumstances of her birth]].
** It's established early on that Kate hates how she stains everything she touches. This makes much more sense with the revelation that [[spoiler: she was born human and only began emitting soot after she turned 12.]]
** Both of the anime openings featured a mirror motif along with Kate, [[spoiler:hinting at her true nature as Kate Mirror]].
** The fact that Emilico and Kate are the only Living Doll-Shadow duo that ''don't'' share the same voice actress hints to [[spoiler: the reveal that unlike the other Shadows, Kate didn't develop from a Morph that mimicked Emilico]].
** It is strongly implied that someone or something overheard Kate on the night she undid Emilico's brainwashing and discussed her plan to overthrow Lord Grandfather. [[spoiler: It's revealed that it was Shirley, who survived the debut and is working with Ram to assist them as a faceless doll without getting caught.]]
** Emilico walking along tightrope outside the mansion to reach the coffee storage room triggers a brief memory of a time before she was brought to the Shadows House. [[spoiler: She later learns that she was a circus acrobat in her previous life before having her memory wiped.]]
* In the ''Manga/ShamanKing'' anime, in the first episodes Manta tells Yoh he's seen a boy like him, meaning he saw someone who's a Shaman like him. Yoh then says [[spoiler: that he doesn't have a twin, joking. Turns out he does have a [[EvilTwin twin]] [[BigBad brother]], as we find out several episodes later]]. Not sure if this is foreshadowing though, since his words were more like an accidental guess.
* ''Manga/ShinMazingerZero'': When [[RobotGirl Minerva-X]] sees ''[[Anime/MazingerZ Kouji Kabuto]]'' fighting [[RobotGirl the Gamia sisters]], she's amazed, since a human being shouldn't be capable of moving so fast or hitting so hard. Later on, she discovers that [[spoiler:Kouji had become a cyborg in that timeline.]]
* At one point in the ''Spiral'' manga, Hiyono starts spouting out Kanone's "data" ; he stops her when she's about to say his father's name. Said name is revealed about three books later, said father is central to the plot. [[spoiler:... And the reason Hiyono knows that name is more than the fact she's got insane info-collecting skills.]] As all Hiyono manages to say is "Ya" before Kanone angrily interrupts her, though, it seems like some random pained cry the first time you read it. (And that's how it got "translated" in the English publication.)
* ''Manga/SummerTimeRendering'':
** First two hints that Shinpei's heterochromia isn't natural: Ushio's unknown gift at the start of the story glitches out his vision when she gives it to him, and the family photo at the funeral shows him as a child with two dark blue eyes.
** One of the last things Ushio tells Shinpei in his dream on the ferry is "Don't forget to find me". He ends up searching for her Shadow on the beach during the summer festival, [[spoiler: and again in the second to last loop when he has to scour the sea for the current timeline's iteration of Shadow Ushio before Haine's shadow army destroys her.]]
** Amidst the carnage at the summer festival, Tokiko says "this isn't what I dirtied my hands for!" before Shide kills her by stabbing her in the head. [[spoiler: In the next loop we learn that she's been working for Haine and Shide, and both plan to eventually betray her.]]
** The ritual at the end of the summer festival cuts to a scene of a melting shadow in a wheelchair next to Dr. Hishigata and another of Nezu at his house aiming his rifle at something. [[spoiler: Both of them are eventually revealed to have wives who were turned into shadows.]]
** Shide makes crypic comments during the ritual, such as wanting to "cut the power" to this world and proclaiming "This is my ending". [[spoiler: His true identity is a huge fan of video games and his true goal is to usurp Haine's ritual so he can completely destroy reality.]]
** Several clues point towards Shadow Ushio's [[spoiler: true identity as Haine's counterpart, such as time traveling alongside Shinpei at the same time Haine does at the end of Loop 3, feeling deja vu at the abandoned clinic where Haine used to live, and obtaining the unique ability to hack other shadows just like Haine can]]. A more subtle hint is that Shinpei's mismatched eye is [[spoiler: light blue like Shadow Ushio's eyes because she was the eye's most recent owner, rather than blood red like Haine's eyes who was where she originally got it from.]]
* ''Manga/TakopisOriginalSin'':
** Takopi's backstory is incredibly brief, being shown in all of a few panels. [[spoiler:We later learn this is because he's an amnesiac and has lost the memories of the real reason he's on Earth... to make a BadFuture version of Marina smile by ''killing Shizuka.'']]
** The first smile Shizuka gives Takopi is when they part at the end of their first meeting, having grown to become friends. [[spoiler:This sets up the eventual way that Takopi does get Shizuka to be truly happy, by making her and Marina friends.]]
** When Takopi first explains the Happy Camera to Shizuka, she notes how heavy it is. [[spoiler:Its weight ends up becoming a problem when Takopi accidentally hits Marina's head with it, killing her.]]
* ''Manga/TegamiBachiLetterBee'':
** After Gauche shows Lag the black Spirit Amber imbedded in his Shidanjuu, Lag, who'd supposedly only just heard about Spirit Amber, asks if there are any red ones. This foreshadows the fact that there's a red Spirit Amber in Lag's eye, hidden by his bangs.
** Lag asks Connor if his dingo can be something other than a dog(the most common type of dingo), and Connor says that it can be anything Lag can tame, even a lion or a panther, and Lag can even hire a {{Ronin}} if he can afford one. This foreshadows that Zazie's dingo Wasiolka is a panther, and the existence of a temp agency that Lag visits while Sylvette is unavailable for dingo work.
** During the lighthouse storyline, Lag, who's been trapped in an illusion and thinks that he's the lighthouse keeper's grandson Lugh, sees a shadowy figure with two sets of eyes stalking him and telling him to get out. It later turns out to be Niche; the lower pair of eyes is hers while the upper pair belongs to her HeadPet Steak.
* There are multiple signs in ''Anime/TokyoMagnitude8'' that [[spoiler:Yuuki had [[DeadAllAlong died]], and his sister is [[ThroughTheEyesOfMadness hallucinating]] him around in her grief,]] before TheReveal two episodes later. There is Mari's reaction to Mirai [[spoiler:acting as if he's alive]], minor characters not [[spoiler:interacting with Yuuki]], and Yuuki's frequent [[spoiler:random disappearances]].
* Mitsuru Adachi in ''Manga/Touch1981'' uses it like it's going out of style. Particularly very early in the series Minami tells Kazuya that he "won't live long", and draws the ace of spades while using cards to predict the future of Kazuya's try for Koushien. "Hoshi no Silhouette", Kazuya's image song in the anime, also qualifies.
* ''Manga/WorldTrigger'':
** Taichi exclaims, "I hope Tamakoma 2 loses big!" after he and the rest of his squad lose to them in Round 3. [[spoiler: Tamakoma 2 completely wipes out in their next match, netting them their first and only loss in the entire tournament.]]
** Osamu considers [[PowersAsPrograms adding an extra Trigger]] to his loadout while preparing for Round 7, but Shiori warns him that his [[{{Mana}} Trion]] is too low to support it, and the only way he could make it work would be by swapping out one of his current triggers for the new one. [[spoiler: At the very end of Round 8, Osamu is able to land a critical blow on Ninomiya using a [[HomingProjectile Hound]] Trigger he swapped out with his usual Asteroid trigger offscreen, before the match started.]]
* In ''Manga/YuYuHakusho'', when Yusuke takes off his spirit cuffs during his fight against Toguro, his spirit energy briefly manifests the shape of a large bird that cries out and flies around the stadium before settling down in him. Near the end of the Sensui arc, [[spoiler:his spirit animal evolves from looking like a Furby with bloodhound ears to the same large bird, and it makes the same cry.]]
* ''Anime/ZombieLandSaga'': [[JacobMarleyApparel The conditions of]] [[Characters/ZombieLandSagaFranchouchou Franchouchou]]'s bodies hint at the circumstances of their deaths before they're revealed ([[RuleOfSymbolism even though the dead are cremated in Japan]], as they point out).
** [[Characters/ZombieLandSagaSakuraMinamoto Sakura]] has a huge gash on her head from smashing it against [[LookBothWays the windshield of a speeding truck]].
** Saki is [[CoveredInScars covered in stitched up cuts]] and bandages from her fatal bike crash which inflicted lethal burns and lacerations.
** Ai is [[BandageMummy noticeably bandaged all over her body]], save around her eyes and her hair, because [[HighVoltageDeath she was hit by a freak lighting storm and cooked alive]].
** Junko [[FrankensteinsMonster has visible stitching all over her body]] as the result of [[LudicrousGibs being torn apart]] when her plane exploded.
** Lily's [[HeartBeatsOutOfChest heart is constantly and comically beating out of her chest, expanding to huge sizes when she's nervous]], because she died from a heart attack.
** Yugiri got the scar around her neck when she was [[spoiler:[[OffWithHisHead executed via beheading]]]].
