''The Green Hornet'' is an action-comedy directed by Creator/MichelGondry and starring Creator/SethRogen (who also co-wrote the script), Music/JayChou and Creator/ChristophWaltz. It adapts the classic character and brings him into the modern world with a more comedic and slapstick style.

As for its SuperHeroOrigin, Britt Reid is the spoiled and lazy son of a newspaper tycoon and he is given a wake-up call when his dad dies and the responsibility is passed on to him. Now completely lost without the opportunity to piss off his dad, he strikes up a friendship with GadgeteerGenius and martial arts master Kato. This leads to a night of drunken vandalism when they [[BadassBystander end up foiling]] a late-night robbery/rape attempt.

Feeling a sense of accomplishment for the first time in their lives, they set out as vigilantes to track down the criminal underworld, with their particular angle being that they are acting as rival criminals. Britt uses the resources of his father's paper and the intelligence of his secretary, Lenore Case, to unknowingly further their mission. This catches the attention of the underground kingpin [[BigBad Benjamin Chudnofsky]], who wants them dead.

----
!!This film provides examples of:
* AbusiveParents: James Reid was a workaholic who always put his own business before his own son and was barely present for young Britt in his life. Whenever he was physically present for the kiddo, it was just to show him how much of a disappointment he was to him. When Britt is sent home from school because he tried to defend someone from bullies, James angrily scolds him and then snaps the head off Britt's superhero toy.
* ActorAllusion:
** Kato singing along to "Gangstas' Paradise"; Jay Chou is primarily a [=hip-hop/R&B=] artiste, with alleged gang connections simply from the production values of his concept videos and the nature of his initial fanbase. Then there's him playing the piano [[spoiler:when he sees Lenore behind Britt's back.]] As for the mention of [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PHrq3Ew0T-I nunchucks...]]
** More of irony than allusion, but Jay's breakout role in his native Taiwan also involved hard-and-fast driving in a LiveActionAdaptation, as Takumi in ''Manga/InitialD''. The scene with Kato playing with a basketball also alludes to Jay's earlier movie, ''Film/KungFuDunk''. And the massacre of [[spoiler:several gangsters just for wearing green]] parallels a plot point from ''Film/CurseOfTheGoldenFlower''. This is basically ''Meet Jay Chou: The Movie.''
** Creator/JamesFranco as a meth dealer. What was his last movie with Seth Rogen? ''Film/PineappleExpress.''
* AdaptationalVillainy: [[spoiler: In the original series, D.A. Frank Scanlon was an ally of the Green Hornet. In this film, he's one of the main villains and was responsible for the death of Britt's father.]]
* AffablyEvil: Chudnofsky doesn't really like to be very aggressive in his attitude. [[BerserkButton Unless people tell him]] [[TemptingFate they aren't afraid of him]]...
* AlmightyJanitor: Kato, the car mechanic and coffee guy who could kick your ass five ways at once.
* ApparentlyPowerlessPuppetmaster: Anyone who hears Britt Reid speak for five minutes realizes he is a buffoonish ManChild. His father left him the Sentinel, but obviously Britt is an UpperClassTwit who cannot do anything for himself. Then you realize he doesn’t need to do anything for himself: he continuously and successfully manipulates people much more intelligent than him ([[HypercompetentSidekick Kato]], [[TheStrategist Casey]] and [[DaEditor Mike Axford]]) into doing exactly what Britt wants them to do. In the end, he [[spoiler:also can do something on his own.]]
* AwesomeButImpractical: [[spoiler:'''BLOODNOFSKY''''s gas-mask ensemble makes a lot of sense as the villainous antithesis to Britt's Green Hornet. That said, it interferes a lot with visibility, fogs up the longer he wears it due to condensation, and his mooks complain when they realize he didn't bother giving them their own masks especially when their enemy specializes in attacking with knockout gas.]]
* BadBoss: Chudnofski plays this chillingly straight.
* BeleagueredAssistant: Kato at first, but he doesn't put up with much of it before putting Britt in his place.
* BerserkButton: Britt getting a bad cup of coffee.
** Kato, in light of the following: being called a sidekick, getting poked, getting cheap-shotted in a fight, and being asked to make coffee, [[spoiler: especially if asked by the one who told him not to waste his potential in making coffee.]]
** You also do not want to tell Chudnofsky that he's not scary.
* BigBadDuumvirate: Chudnofsky [[spoiler:and Scanlon.]]
* BilingualBonus: Kato actually says "I spent three months" in Mandarin before correcting himself ''and'' switching to English. "I spent three weeks..." And for the record, he's ranting "that idiot will be the death of me" after his argument with Britt leads to Lenore hitting him as well.
* BlackDudeDiesFirst: One of Bloodnofsky's Mooks is a black man, and is the first to die.
* BlownAcrossTheRoom: [[spoiler:Kato manages to One-Inch Punch a guy through the air and a window.]]
* BrickJoke: Kato, are you a pervert?
** [[spoiler:"Nunchuks? That was my idea!"]]
*** [[spoiler:Ejector seats.]]
* BulletTime: Kato's combat perspective (and subsequent ass-kicking) is rendered like this. Ironically, one of the more realistic elements of the film, as seasoned fighters' advanced reaction time (plus adrenaline) ''does'' make time seem to slow down and space to distort. (The best part is that Kato is ''drunk'' when he's doing this.) Parodied when [[spoiler:Britt even tries it toward the end, though he has a hard time controlling his momentum and using an ImprovisedWeapon]].
* ByronicHero: Britt is this trope personified: Ungrateful, deluded, ungrateful, egomaniacal, self-centered, ungrateful, immature, and stupid. He is not shown to have one decent or redeeming quality about him - even after he [[spoiler:manages to drive away Kato]], until [[spoiler: his extravagant efforts to promote the Hornet as a menace resulted in the deaths of seven innocents who just happened to be wearing green. His horror at the consequences of his selfishness is the first time we get to see a decent and heroic side to him, and he gets better from there.]]
* CarChaseShootOut: The climax of the movie is one big long action scene that begins with the Green Hornet and Kato being chased by the BigBadDuumvirate and their henchmen because they have [[spoiler:a recording of his confession]]. While in pursuit on the highway, they're fired upon by villains, one of whom tries taking them out with a rocket launcher.
* CardCarryingVillain: Chudnofsky. Cares a lot about people being scared of him. Takes great pride in his double barreled handgun. Later gives himself a supervillain name and comes up with a very bad CatchPhrase / PreMortemOneLiner.
** Invoked deliberately with the Green Hornet, with literal cards and ''an email address''.
* CarFu: Oh, boy, let us count the ways... We have the Black Beauty, three industrial trucks, a flying construction vehicle, a rolling cement tank, the replacement Black Beauty, various normal cars, [[spoiler:the front half]] of the [[RuleOfThree Black Beauty]]. And no motorcycles, [[RedHerring even though this Kato owns a]] CoolBike.
* ChekhovsGun: [[spoiler:Kato's adrenaline reaction skill. Also, ejector seats. Also, Britt's dad's death.]]
* CoatHatMask: Oh, yes. "You said my suit looked 'pimp', which seemed a really odd thing for you to say, but I believed you!"
* CombatPragmatist: When Britt and Kato have their big argument and fight, Kato dismisses Britt as incapable of even touching him. While Kato was certainly the superior fighter, Britt was unafraid of using cheap tactics such as playing [[WoundedGazelleGambit hurt]] or a surprise GroinAttack.
* CoolCar: The Black Beauty has never looked so good.
-->'''Kato:''' I call it the Black Beauty.\
'''Britt:''' [[ShapedLikeItself It's beautiful! ...And black!]]
** Also, the suicide doors contain [[MoreDakka machine guns]]. Pretty much every inch of the car contains machine guns. Or [[ThereIsNoKillLikeOverkill rockets]].
* CoolGarage: Britt uses it in the beginning to impress a date. [[spoiler: Britt's dad doesn't like his garage being used for that.]]
* CrazyIsCool: In-universe, Britt's description of Kato basically boils down to this.
-->"You're like a human Swiss Army Knife!... it's a thing that you keep pulling things out of, every time you think you're done pulling out things, another cool thing pops right out and that's ''you!''"
* CrouchingMoronHiddenBadass: In the movie incarnation, Britt Reid isn't as suave, but there are times when he is able to more than hold his own. The end of the film basically showcases this as he becomes the Green Hornet most people know.
** If you look at the fights, Britt does pretty well in one on one situations when he isn't panicking (he can throw a pretty good hook).
*** He can also [[MadeOfIron take quite a bit of punishment]]. In his fight with [[spoiler:Kato]] both land some extremely good hits. Justified for [[spoiler:Kato, as he's a martial arts expert who has fought all his life]], but Britt is a spoiled creampuff with no training. Apparently getting beat up so much in school taught him how to take a hit.
** [[spoiler: Being OneHeadTaller and about a hundred pounds heavier probably helped too.]]
* CruelAndUnusualDeath: Chudnovsky [[spoiler: gets speared through both eyes with two halves of an office desk leg, courtesy of Kato]].
%% (ZCE) * DarkerAndEdgier
* DataDriveMacGuffin: In the final act of the film, Reid manages to record an EngineeredPublicConfession from D.A. Frank Scanlon that reveals he is TheManBehindTheMan to Chudnofsky and he manipulated Reid's father to deliver fake news about the city's crime rate… and had him assassinated when he finally had enough and stopped reporting them. The (sushi-shaped) data drive of the digital audio recorder becomes the target of Scanlon and Chudnofsky for the final battle, as they unleash every single mook they have to chase the Green Hornet and Kate and kill them and get that drive before they can [[CantStopTheSignal send the recording to the authorities]]. [[spoiler:In an uncommon twist, Reid discovers as he tries to send the file that [[NiceJobBreakingItHero he screwed up the recording]] and the drive is empty. However, [[PlanBResolution said final battle]] manages to kill all of the bad guys, especially Scanlon who is run over ([[DestinationDefenestration and out a window]]) with the Black Beauty when he tries to escape.]]
* DeadpanSnarker: Kato is much more of a smart-ass this time around, and with good reason, being saddled with an idiot like Britt.
* DeadPersonConversation: [[spoiler:Invoked and parodied when Britt spends five minutes, with a dumb look on his face, piecing the facts together in his head with his father after Scanlon practically spelled it out.]]
* DeconReconSwitch: Arguably of the Hero/Sidekick dynamic. Two people with strong enough personalities to dress up in costumes, fill multiple cars with enough guns to take out a small country, and spend their nights kicking criminals asses without a care to the police are ''not'' going to work effectively in that kind of partnership. Since the movie is a ''bit'' more optimistic than, say, ''Film/TheDarkKnight'', Britt and Kato eventually learn how to work together.
* DesperatelyLookingForAPurposeInLife: Kato. How desperate? After a series of failed, if educational, careers (stuntman, chemist, engineer) he immediately jumps at the chance to go crimefighting with his dead boss' deviant of a son.
* TheDeterminator: If there’s one good thing you can say about Britt, it’s that he ''does.'' ''Not.'' ''Give.'' ''Up. '' [[spoiler:Best shown when he and Kato fight. Kato is obviously the superior fighter and mops the floor with Britt, but the latter has surprising levels of endurance and just tanks enough hits until he starts getting if a few good punches himself.]]
* DidNotGetTheGirl: Given that both of the main characters compete for the same girl, this is a given. [[spoiler: Neither one gets her.]]
* DisappearedDad: James. He was physically present only when it was time to say how much of a disappointment to him Brit was. Otherwise, he had 750 employees to take care of and too bad about Brit missing his [[MissingMom departed mother]].
* DisneyVillainDeath: Played with. [[spoiler: Scanlon falls to his death out of a window of the Sentinel building, but only because Kato ''rams'' him with the Black Beauty. And then the Black Beauty ''lands on him''.]]
* TheDragon: Popeye
* DudeWheresMyRespect?: Kato. Doesn't help that Britt keeps hogging it all.
* DumpThemAll: [[spoiler:In the end, Lenore is only interested in a working relationship with Britt and Kato, though both of them have been pursuing her romantically.]]
* EngineeredPublicConfession: Britt manages to [[spoiler: get Scanlon to confess to his father's murder and various crimes as part of a BreakingSpeech, which he records onto a flash drive. Well, he thought he did anyway, before Britt realized it was completely blank. Oops]].
%%* EpicTrackingShot:
* EstablishingCharacterMoment: We already know what Chudnovsky is like and what he wants to do after the first ten minutes of the movie, as he kills one of his competitors by blowing up a nightclub filled with dozens and dozens of people.
* EvilCostumeSwitch: At the end of the film, Chud... '''BLOODNOFSKY''' feels he needs to begin to emulate the Green Hornet, dressing in fine, crimson suits. Funnily enough, this is exactly what Crystal Clear told him at the beginning of the film.
* EvilerThanThou: See ZeroApprovalGambit.
* EvilGloating: Chudnovsky spends too much time trying to recite his PreMortemOneLiner to Kato rather than just shoot him.
* EyeScream: Chud... '''BLOODNOFSKY''' tries to pull this on Kato with his double-barreled handgun. [[spoiler:Kato returns the favor by stabbing two pieces of wood into his eye sockets]].
* FamilyUnfriendlyDeath: [[spoiler:Scanlon is still recognizably intact even after falling more than ten stories while being crushed by half a car. Chudnofsky had none of his luck.]]
* {{Fanservice}}: Lenore Case (Cameron Diaz), particularly at the end.
** Anybody notice the chick at the beginning? She was wearing a clear bra just barely covering.
* {{Foreshadowing}}: one of the outfits Britt tries out for his Green Hornet thing is seen again on [[spoiler:one of the hoodlums who get massacred later on.]]
* FreudianExcuse: As much as an unlikable jerk Britt may be, he gave up on trying to be a good person as a child when his workaholic prick of a father told him straight out that he should not bother trying because he fails at everything.
* FunnyBackgroundEvent: When Kato [[spoiler:"carries out" the hit on Britt in the Japanese restaurant, one of the dozens of panicky yells from around them is actually "it's the Green Hornet's [[RunningGag sidekick!]]"]]
* GadgeteerGenius: Kato. Amazingly so.
* [[LesserStar The Garfunkel]]: Britt Reid is basically useless in the first few fights, gets himself in situations he can't handle all the time (he's a pretty competent one-on-one fighter, but he tends to get entire gangs after him at once), he's a glory-hogging egotist and his major contribution to the Black Beauty is suggesting ejector seats. In contrast, Kato builds all of their toys and is an expert martial artist who can take out entire gangs at once. Eventually [[LampshadeHanging lampshaded]] when Britt [[HypocriticalHumor accuses Kato of being this instead]] during their big fight. [[TookALevelInBadass Britt gets better in the final fight]].
* GasMaskMooks: Lampshaded. [[spoiler:Chudnofsky starts wearing one as part of his new persona. When he and his minions end up in a situation where gas masks are actually ''useful'', Scanlon demands to know why no one else was issued one.]]
* GenreSavvy: When Britt thinks of spinning the Green Hornet as a villain to avoid common superhero pitfalls, he explicitly discusses that something that happens in many superhero stories is the BigBad getting wind of the hero's identity and who his loved ones are and deciding to pull an "IHaveYourWife" / "AndYourLittleDogToo" gambit.
* GogglesDoNothing: An odd example. [[spoiler:The gas mask worn by Chud... '''BLOODNOFSKY''' is useful when the heroes throw knockout gas around. Then it hinders him when the lenses get fogged up. Both situations were completely unexpected, though he was only wearing it to look scary. He never thought of an actual ''function'' for it to have.]]
-->[[spoiler:''"I'm ungassable!!!"'']]
* GoodIsNotNice: The protagonists. Britt and Kato's initial motivation for becoming vigilantes was boredom, and Britt still acts like a jerk as he gets more into the act. They also have few scruples when it comes to taking the lives of criminals [[spoiler: (They outright ''murder'' DA Scanlon)]] or wounding the police if the situation calls for it. They're not mean or cynical though, they just don't care because they (in their minds) really have nothing at stake and nothing to lose.
* GroinAttack: There's a lot of them in the film, mostly by Kato.
* GunsAkimbo: Chudnofsky is most known (before his reinvention) for his double-barreled HandCannon. It can even spread the barrels apart to fire at different targets.
* HeroicBSOD / MyGodWhatHaveIDone: Britt's reaction after the [[spoiler:massacre of innocent guys wearing green]].
* HeroWithBadPublicity:
** [[InvokedTrope Intentional on Britt's part.]] He wants to get in with the criminals who corrupted the city, so he uses the Sentinel to make the Green Hornet more of a perceived menace.
** Britt specifically brings up a number of problems with being a 'hero' and concludes that appearing as a 'villain' will give him more freedom to act. Interestingly, at least initially this could be justified as a desire to find the man who desecrated his father's grave -- and then he becomes an 'actual' menace.
* HeterosexualLifePartners: Britt and Kato. Two orphans together on an adventure. Naturally, the writers play up the HoYay as much as possible.
-->'''Britt:''' He's my man.\
'''Kato:''' I'm not your ''man''.\
'''Britt:''' He's not my "man" man, he's my... we're platon- it's platon- we're just platonic male friends...\
[''looks at Kato, who nods'']\
'''Britt:''' YES.
* HiddenDepths: Averted with Britt, aside from [[MadeOfIron his being able to take some punishment]] and his 5-minute jaunt into truth-o-vision[[note]]note that the conclusion he arrived at goes beyond what Scanlon told him, but mostly consisted of him staring into space like an idiot[[/note]]. Amusingly, Kato is ''entirely'' this.
* HyperCompetentSidekick: Kato in the 2011 movie. He '''built''' Black Beauty (and several duplicates), made all the toys he and Green Hornet use, fights like he came off the set of ''Film/TheMatrix'', and did many of the things his partner is given credit for. Reid, by comparison, is a klutzy, stupid man with no combat training who leads mostly because Kato doesn't make the effort to. This is endlessly {{lampshaded}} and even deconstructed as it more or less becomes the basis to the film's conflicts.
* IAmNotLefthanded: [[spoiler:The Black Beauty has one final gimmick for slipping away from the cops - color changing.]]
* IceCreamKoan:
-->'''Britt:''' You corner the hornet, you get stung!\
'''Kato''': What does that even mean?!\
'''Britt:''' I don't know! I thought it would sound cool!\
'''Kato:''' It's stupid!
* IJustShotMarvinInTheFace:
** Chudnofsky kills one of his minions when he pounds his gun on a table for emphasis.
** Britt shooting himself with the gas gun, actually in the face, too.
* IJustWantToBeBadass: [[spoiler:Chudnofsky wanted to be feared. When he felt he was being upstaged by the Green Hornet, he lost it and became '''BLOODNOFSKY''', sacrificing pragmatism for theatrics]].
* ImperialStormtrooperMarksmanshipAcademy: Played straight and lampshaded by the main characters. Includes said main characters.
* ImprovisedWeapon:
** Both Britt and Kato during their brawl in Britt's mansion.
** Britt swings around an office chair's five-point wheels in the final fight... just before tripping. Kato [[spoiler:nails Chudnofsky with both halves of a table leg.]]
* IndyPloy: Invoked by Britt, thinking he's gotten it down after the first time. Kato's luck is just a little better.
--> "What are you doing?!" "Either killing us or saving us!"
* InnerMonologue: Britt has one when [[spoiler:he finally pieces everything together in the Hibachi restaurant. This is lampshaded immediately afterward when he's told he had been sitting in his chair with the same dumb look on his face for the last 5 minutes.]]
* InnocentInnuendo: Britt says quite a few lines that have homosexual tones all throughout the whole film, but he's very clearly unaware of what he's saying. Kato is, on the other hand.
* ItsAllAboutMe: Britt.
* {{Jerkass}}:
** Britt again.
** His father in the opening scene of the movie, he scolds his son for being sent home ''just because he was trying to protect someone at school'' then popping the head of the poor kid's action figure off. Even Kato admits that Reid Sr. was "a bit of a dick."
* JustBetweenYouAndMe: [[spoiler: Scanlon's confession to Britt. In a crowded restaurant, no less, but only because he expected him to either cave in or die soon.]]
* KnockoutGas: Britt's gas gun. When he first accidentally shoots himself, he is in a coma for 11 days. Kato subsequently adjusts the gas mixture to 1 hour. [[spoiler:Britt promptly tests it by shooting Kato.]]
* LackOfEmpathy: [[OverlyLongGag Once again, Britt]].
* LampshadeHanging
** "Aw man, now we're in a car chase."
** Chudnofsky's first scene involves him asking someone if he knew how hard it was for him to get his double-barreled gun made.
* LargeHam: Waltz seems to be having quite a bit of fun playing Chudnofsky.
-->'''Waltz''': '''''BLOODNOFSKY'''''
* LeaningOnTheFourthWall:
-->'''Britt Reid:''' What do you want your autobiography to say, "Oil Changes and Cappuccinos"? Because I think "Balls Deep in Shit Kicking Dudes" by Kato is a much cooler sounding book! I would read that, and I won't read shit! And when they make it into a movie ''I would watch the shit out of it!''
* LogicalWeakness: The Black Beauty's hood machine guns are fixed in place. During the final chase, [[strike:Chudnofsky]] '''BLOODNOFSKY''' attempts to take advantage of this by telling his men to drive to the side of the Beauty so they can't get shot. Subverted when Britt and Kato simply shoot them with the machine guns in the suicide doors, which ''can'' shoot to the side.
* ManBehindTheMan: Lenore, a hilarious subversion as even she doesn't know that she's effectively masterminding Britt and Kato's activities.
* {{Manchild}}: Creator/SethRogen can play this role in his sleep. This is one of the driving tropes behind his decision to become a hero -- because it's childishly awesome.
* MeanBoss: Britt is a rare comedic example of this trope.
* MetallicarSyndrome: Subverted; the car ''should'' be conspicuous, but turns out at the end to have camouflage technology that lets it hide from a police pursuit.
* MilesGloriosus: Britt is essentially this type of hero for most of the film until the very end where he [[LetsGetDangerous starts to gain some competence]].
* MoodWhiplash: The tone is rather lighthearted for most of the film, which makes the scene when it's revealed that[[spoiler: after a hit is put out on the Green Hornet, seven innocent people were killed by mistake because they just happened to be wearing green at the time]] quite jarring to say the least. [[FridgeBrilliance It mirrors Britt's view of heroics.]]
* MoreDakka: The Black Beauty has guns everywhere. Hood, suicide doors, trunk...
** The bad guys also bring a heavy machinegun when they attempt to destroy it later.
* MuggingTheMonster: Crystal Clear to Chudnofsky. He pays for it.
* MundaneMadeAwesome: Epic bottle-opening, courtesy of Kato!
* MustHaveCaffeine: Kato is a Master Barista, engineering his own espresso machine, and having an artistic flair for pouring lattes.
* MythologyGag:After the climactic battle [[spoiler:Britt Reid's wound and Lenore Case's idea for getting Reid medical help without drawing suspicion]] is [[strike:lifted from]] an homage to the TV series episode "Bad Bet on a 459-Silent".
** In the T.V show the district attorney was called Scanlon, although he worked with the Green Hornet. [[spoiler:In the film, he's the bad guy.]]
** One of Kato's sketches is of Creator/BruceLee, Jay Chou's predecessor of the role. Jay Chou even replicates Bruce Lee's best known moves, like the one-inch punch and pushing side kick. The entire subplot of Kato being annoyed at being treated as Britt's sidekick is that basically before Bruce Lee had the role, Kato was literally just the Hornet's driver.
** The original show theme (and graphic) play at the end of the film.
** The control panel on Kato's espresso machine resembles the one in Reid's garage in the TV series that controls access to the Black Beauty.
** Britt's unintended first costume, with a green bandana and brown trenchcoat, is the Hornet's original costume, and also the one in the Year One series.
** Britt has a poster of Radio/TheLoneRanger, who in the original continuity was his great-uncle.
** Kato says he's from Shanghai to which Britt responds [[ArtisticLicenseGeography "I love Japan."]] On the surface it seems like he's an idiot, but it's actually a shout out to two things. Kato's original actor Creator/BruceLee being chinese, while playing a character who is of Japanese ethnicity.
** Upon being informed that the Black Beauty's upgrades have been complete, Britt excitedly pulls the tarp off of a covered car expecting the fully-upgraded Black Beauty, but is disappointed to find out that the covered car is actually a [[https://www.imcdb.org/i314537.jpg 1937 Lincoln Zephyr]] which was the Green Hornet and Kato's hero car in the [[https://medleyana.files.wordpress.com/2015/08/gh-blackbeauty.png 1940 Green Hornet film serial from Universal.]]
* NeverMyFault: Chudnofsky kills a subordinate who tells him about the Green Hornet raiding one of his meth labs and says it's the Green Hornet's fault that the subordinate is dead.
* NoHeroToHisValet: James Reid is beloved by his city and employees but both Britt and Kato thought he was a bit of a dick.
* NoKillLikeOverkill: The Black Beauty can pretty much demolish several city blocks with its full loadout. And does.
** How about destroying a traffic camera with a missile launcher?
** Hilariously, the car also has non-lethal bean bag ammo, but uses it all of once during the movie.
* NotThisOneThatOne: An inversion of this happens when Kato shows Britt their CoolCar. Britt sees an ordinary car, but then Kato shows the ''actual'' car: the Black Beauty.
* NotWearingTights: Kato specifically mentions he will have no part of that side of super-heroics.
** Chudnofsky, on the other hand, does consider it.
* TheOner: [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UA5ZuJdrgyc Multiple-camera split-screen version]]. The spread of information about the contract on the Green Hornet: Chudnofsky's henchman tells a madam, who sends out two women, who tell two other guys, who tell two other guys...
* OnlyOneName: The name on that resume Kato's filling out just says "Kato".
* TheParalyzer: The Green Hornet's gas gun makes a return, but getting the potency right so a person is merely knocked out, not put in a coma for 11 days, is shown to be a little tricky.
* ParentsAsPeople: James Reid is a classic example: a well-respected publisher who believes in the freedom of the press [[spoiler: a belief that costs him his life.]] Britt, however grew into a lazy playboy who will find any opportunity to spite him. Part of Britt's development is growing to admire his father for what he stood for, while still accepting the fact that his dad wasn't a nice guy.
* PassiveAggressiveKombat:
** Britt never directly confronted his dad, but he never missed a chance to disappoint him. When Britt talks to you, you cannot be sure if he is praising you or insulting you (he bluntly tells Kato he had no life and called Casey “old”). The obvious example is when Kato is hitting on Casey, Britt doesn’t like that and, instead of confronting his feelings, he humiliates Kato by asking for a coffee. When Kato confronted Britt (by punching a hole in the wall) , he manipulated Kato with guilt and convinced him that Kato misunderstood the situation and that it was all part of their cover.
** Kato takes this attitude with Britt when the direct approach doesn’t work: He goes on a date with Casey and lies to Britt about visiting his friend Tony. Does it not seem suspicious that the HypercompetentSidekick risks letting his ManChild employer [[RecklessGunUsage near a gas gun]]?
* PetTheDog: Britt hiring Lenore comes off like this, despite any motives he had at the time.
* PintsizedPowerhouse: Kato.
* PlotMandatedFriendshipFailure: The falling out between Britt and Kato over who gets the girl and who the real hero is. It culminates with an argument over whether they're a boss and employee, or friends. They make up in time to face off with the BigBadDuumvirate.
* PreAssKickingOneLiner: At the sushi bar.
-->'''Britt''': Confused? You ''should'' be! ''*punch*''
* PreMortemOneLiner: Chudnofsky makes one when he decides to become '''Bloodnofsky''', but he never has a chance to use it AND kill his target.
-->'''Bloodnofsky:''' Be it my mask or your blood, red is the last color you'll see.
** Chudnofsky had a flair for these even before that (and far better luck):
-->"Do you have any idea how many great men have killed in a suit?!" (shoots Edward Furlong)\
[[spoiler:after trapping the Black Beauty and burying our heroes alive]]: "And so, thunder strikes lightning."
* ProperlyParanoid: Kato mentions that Britt's father ordered him to cover many of his cars in gadgets and gizmos for the last few years... and not without reason. Granted, those seem to have been cosmetic or defensive in nature - the ''machine guns and missiles'' were put in after he died.
* RecklessGunUsage: Britt is too dumb to ask Kato how to handle his new gas gun properly and promptly knocks himself out for eleven days.
* TheRival: Shockingly, with Kato at times. But [[VitriolicBestBuds they're still partners that are there for each other in the long run.]]
* ScaryBlackMan: Chili
* ScienceCocktail: Kato makes apparently extremely good coffee with this big scientific industrial looking machine that he made and only he knows how to use.
* SecretKeeper: [[spoiler:Lenore, eventually.]]
* ShoutOut: Much like Sam Raimi's Spider-Man film, Britt tries his hand at drawing out costume concepts. Unlike Peter Parker, Britt doesn't have unreasonably good sketching ability (though Kato does) and takes the time to wear a couple.
** Bloodnofsky's getup with a gas mask, coat, and gun is quite reminiscent of ComicBook/TheSandman.
** The Black Beauty gets SpikedWheels, which Britt keeps referring to as "that [[Film/BenHur1959 Ben-Hur]] shit".
** When Kato is trying to sneak out to go on a date with Lenore behind Britt's back, he says he's going to be visiting his friend "Tony." Now what other GadgeteerGenius superheroes who've had their [[Film/IronMan own film series over the past few years]] have that name?
** The first time Britt and Kato get in a fight Kato is weaing a cheffuer's cap and goggles in a ShoutOut to Creator/JetLi's BlackMask, who in turn was inspired by Kato.
** After a news story fails to mention that another guy was involved in taking the statue's head, Kato responds by saying he's "too fast for TV". They told Bruce Lee the same thing when he was attacking faster than the cameras could shoot.
** Kato's sketchbook even contains a portrait of Creator/BruceLee and another of his drawings looks suspiciously like Batwoman.
** Kato shouts [[Franchise/StreetFighter "Hadouken!"]] when launching Britt out of a poker table during their fight.
* StealthPun: Kato's had it up to here with being referred to as the ''sidekick'' - and yet which of Creator/BruceLee's trademark moves does he replicate at least once?
* TheStrategist: Lenore. What's unique about her, though, is that she doesn't even ''know''- Britt hires her as a secretary, has her theorize what the Green Hornet would do next...and then he follows her advice and does it.
* SureLetsGoWithThat: A version that's non-verbal for one side. Bloodnofsky wears a gas mask to look scary. [[spoiler:When Green Hornet surprises him with knock-out gas, he proclaims himself ungassable as if he had worn the mask for that reason all along.]]
* SuspectIsHatless: PlayedForHorror in the third act: [[spoiler:Chudnofsky orders his goons to kill the Green Hornet and he sends out a bounty for anybody who can kill the Green Hornet. He phrases it so vaguely that within hours, the criminal underground of L.A. is gleefully massacring everybody in the city they see wearing green. Britt has a moment of [[MyGodWhatHaveIDone shocked realization at what his efforts have caused]].]]
* TheSummation: [[spoiler:When Britt puts together what's been going on, we see a quick, surreal montage representing his thought processes, implied to be happening instantly. Then we get back to reality, and the guy he's sitting next to says Britt's been sitting there for five minutes with a dopey look on his face trying to put it together.]]
* TheSyndicate: While not an actual syndicate per se, Chudnofsky has total control of all the underworld involvements in the city. Nobody is allowed to do anything without his permission.
* ThemeMusicWithholding: The classic theme plays in the film's final moments.
* ThemeNaming: Chudnofsky's two henchmen are called Popeye and Chilli - did they get their start in fast food?
* ThouShaltNotKill: Mostly Averted. If you're a criminal, and you try to kill them, the Green Hornet and his trusted chauffeur [[{{Series/Firefly}} will kill you right back]]. Afterwards, they'll probably drink some coffee and eat fruit salad.
** That said, Black Beauty does have beanbag rounds, the Green Hornet does have his gas gun, and Kato (probably) can pull his punches - but the plot mostly throws out situations where these aren't the most effective response.
* TokenRomance: Subverted; at first, it looks like Lenore Case will be Britt's love interest, but it turns out to be completely one-sided. Kato doesn't get that much further with her either, and both get [[GroinAttack assaulted]] for being weird about it.
* TrailersAlwaysLie: The trailers hinted that Kato built the Black Beauty for Reid Sr. and that Britt became the Green Hornet to avenge his father. In the actual film, none of those implications amount to fact.
** The trailers also made it look like Kato was against crimefighting wheres in the movie he's just as enthusiastic as Britt (after just a ''little'' convincing).
* TranquilFury: When it becomes clear that Danny Clear is deliberately pretending not to understand how to pronounce Chudnofsky's name.
-->'''Danny Clear:''' Okay. How-how do I pronounce your name? Chu- Tchai- Tchaikovsky?\
'''Chudnofsky:''' "Chudnofsky".\
'''Danny Clear:''' Charm-- Chardofs-? Chow- Chowdofski?\
[Chudnofsky leans forward in his chair, quietly; Danny Clear becomes uneasy, his bodyguards shift around]\
'''Chudnofsky:''' ''Chud... nof... sky.''
* TwoGuysAndAGirl: this movie essentially sets up our heroes as this for future sequels. Only time will tell if they can solidify into a team of three.
* UnflinchingWalk: Chudnofsky and his mooks after blowing up the nightclub at the beginning of the film.
* UngratefulBastard: Britt. Good lord, Britt. [[spoiler:Kato eventually quits due to this. He gets better, of course.]]
* UnspokenPlanGuarantee: Kato doesn't even tell Britt what's going on [[spoiler:before showing up to ostensibly assassinate him. And then there's the bit at the end.]]
* VanityLicensePlate: the Black Beauty has a rotating one to switch from a normal plate to one that just says 'HORNET'.
* VillainousBreakdown: Chudnovsky undergoes a slow, gradual one through pretty much the length of the whole film, starting in the second scene when Crystal Clear tells him he isn't scary. However, [[spoiler:'''Bloodnofsky''' is just enough of a sociopath to gather his men around him.]] (The creators note that this is a combination of insecurities and a mid-life crisis.)
** Scanlon has an epic one, even though he gets the cops to shoot Reid, the cops still have their guns trained on him too. He pretty much not only tries to tell them who he is to keep them from arresting them, but also shoves the Sushi USB in his mouth to hide the evidence in front of them [[spoiler: it's useless but still pretty damn funny.]] If you listen carefully he even tries to say the Green Hornet's real name, but it can't be made out because of said sushi in his mouth.
--> '''Scanlon:''' I'm district attorney Frank Scanlon, that is the Green Hornet -eats sushi- IT'S BWIT WEED!!!
* VisualPun: The lights on the ceiling of Britt's office at The Sentinel are contained in hexagonal tubes and stuck to the ceiling; just like a hornet's nest.
* WeaksauceWeakness: For all of his various talents, [[spoiler:Kato cannot swim.]]
* WhatMeasureIsAMook: The film zigzags with this trope. While the film has a surprisingly high number of deaths (some fairly horrific ones at that), the trope is averted with a minion when Chudnofsky has a funeral for him and is shown to be pretty broken up by it. Of course, in the next scene, he kills a high-level minion when he suggests that changing his name to Bloodnofsky is the dumbest idea ever.
** When the gas gun is revealed, Britt's first complaint is that he should get a real gun. This is immediately justified as he mentions that they ''will'' be facing people with real guns.
* WhereDoesHeGetAllThoseWonderfulToys: Kato. He seemingly has a lot of connections from other engineers and car mechanics, as well as knowing the right companies to contact for serious hardware. The rest of the time, he builds with scrap.
* WoundedGazelleGambit: Britt pulls one off at the end in order to receive proper medical treatment without giving away his secret identity. Having Kato pretend to shoot him during a public appearance so it looks like the Green Hornet tried to assassinate him, and he has to be driven to the hospital for a bullet wound that nobody else knows was already there.
* ZeerustCanon: That a single newspaper has Franchise/{{Batman}} levels of wealth is rather unbelievable in 2011. But it is part of the backstory.
** Which is lampshaded by Lenore in her interview "the ''Sentinel'' is the only newspaper not part of a large conglomerate".
** It was referred to, very briefly, as the spearhead of a "vast media empire". Presumably there's a lot more.
* ZeroApprovalGambit: Britt's plan is to appear as a rival villain to keep the real villains from thinking he's a hero and thus killing innocent people to force him to quit.
