!!Notable Biology

Natu are extremely small bird Pokémon, ranking third behind and as the world's smallest Pokémon. Nevertheless, their senses are among the most developed of all bird Pokémon. Being able to detect subtle air and ground vibrations with its single head feather, it can evade danger with great ease. It has been observed that, if Natu's head feather gets plucked off, it will become unresponsive to most stimuli for the period of a week, when the feather is fully regenerated. A Natu's sizable brain possesses a light grade of telepathy. allowing Natu to briefly read the mind of its opponent and perform its moves just before the target has the chance to act. This ability is also used to silently communicate with other Natu. At night, Natu use their tiny claws to climb trees, where they sleep. Their reflexes become lethargic while asleep and, thus, they become easy prey for nocturnal predators like Umbreon and .

Xatu, compared to its pre-evolutionary form, is surprisingly tall; some of the largest specimens observed reach the height of a fully-grown human being. Its large wings allow it to fly for long periods of time and provide it with a new means of communication. Xatu will move their wings to communicate with other Xatu in a similar way as flag semaphores in airports do. Xatu stand still for a large portion of their day as they perform an ability that still baffles most Poké biologists: Seers Clairvoyance. A Xatu's brain is breathtakingly large and has great psychic potential. Xatu uses its clairvoyance to inspect a surrounding area, several acres large, and predict future events with unsettling accuracy. This uncanny ability has sparked several myths around Xatu: that they were the messengers of the gods, and that they could see both into the future and into the past. The latter claim has been confirmed by recent experiments, revealing that Xatu possess a remarkable memory and are able to remember their pasts in incredible detail. While not being able to speak, some Xatu are known to be able to telepathically speak with their trainers, which led to the conclusion that Xatu might be partially sentient and self-aware.

This family of Pokémon still holds many mysteries to modern science and research on this Pokémon is still performed by investigators of the paranormal. [Professor’s note: Dear trainer, be careful around faulty information sources concerning this Pokémon. Some paranormal researchers present unsupported pseudoscience and any of their conclusions should not be considered facts.]

!!Habitat

Natu and its evolution, Xatu, may show up in grasslands, coniferous forests and, in rare cases, rocky deserts. This Pokémon line seems to be attracted to ancient ruins, such as temples, palaces, and tombs, where they go to breed. Some even make these places their permanent habitats. This further explains the theory that Xatu and Natu were once considered sacred by ancient civilizations and allowed to freely roam the cities. Unfortunately, it simultaneously adds the question of how they can remember places long-gone for thousands of years. (Genetic memory?) Absol , this line's top predator and mortal enemy, is often found around Natu and Xatu habitats. That Absol is yet another Pokémon often considered to divinative abilities is thought to be a coincidence.

!!Diet

Natu are herbivores feed mainly on seeds and berries that they pluck from bushes with their small beaks. Xatu, on the other hand, are omnivorous; adding roots and decently sized prey, such as , Ariados, and to its diet (Don’t worry, Xatu dislike human flesh). Some Xatu can feed on psychic energy the same way Drowzee and Hypno do.

!!Hazards

Natu are easily startled and will flee at the first sign of danger. When cornered, it will often Teleport away like Abra do. Trainers should be specially cautious and patient if they wish to catch a Natu. Xatu seem to be aware of Natu's impressive evasion skills and will not generally act defensively of their young. Maternal defense behavior is only observed when the main nest is threatened directly, in response to which all Xatu will harry the attacker fiercly, hoping to drive it away. Interestingly, Natu often have been observed climbing on top of the head of a lonely Xatu for protection.

Most Xatu are wary, yet docile, around humans. Some are friendly, but rarely show signs of affection. One should never startle a Xatu performing its Clairvoyance at close range: it will respond with a brief reflex, best described by most witnesses as 'an explosive head decompression.' (Trainer's note: The easiest way to tell if a Xatu is approachable is watching its eyes. Black and attentive: Go ahead. Glowing blue and lost: Keep back). Trainers who own a Xatu, as well as their friends and family, should take note of this small detail. Xatu don’t normally attack people, but some have been known to become vengeful at past aggressors, which they can remember extremely well. There have also been reports of genuinely malevolent Xatu who are well aware of the superstitions that form around them. These specimens fully exploit such legends to terrify humans and play with a chosen victim's minds. One such Xatu terrorized the people of a small village by invading their dreams, pursuing them in nightmares and driving them mad. Another Xatu predicted its trainer's death, which was accurately brought about by the trainer himself in an attempt to prevent his fate. Such cases seem to be more common with captured specimens and wild specimens with direct contact with human settlements. [Trainer's note: It’s preferable to catch Natu instead of Xatu, as a wild Xatu might have a hard time adapting to your leadership (See Social Structure), in addition to the perils of catching an evil Xatu.]

Trainers are encouraged to bring a Dark or Ghost type Pokémon with them when wandering in Xatu territory. Preventive signs, describing the hazards associated with Xatu, are also currently being placed in the vicinity of such areas for the safety of trainers.

Xatu and Natu are also common guests in modern shrines and temples. Unless permission from the lead priest is given, catching temple Pokémon is considered a crime and punished with a hefty fine or even up to 3 years in prison, in the worst cases.

There have not been any observed Pokémon-battle-related accidents linked to Natu or Xatu.

!!Training

While most competitive trainers prefer the , Slowpoke, or Ralts line as their Psychic Poké of choice (for their offense, defense and flexibility respectively), Xatu is still valued for its supportive moves, like Wish and Light Screen. They are also an excellent counter against Fighting types.

Natu, like most small bird Pokémon, are relatively easy to train, if a bit harder than Pidgey or Starly. Make sure to take the time to allow your freshly-caught Natu to get used to you and the rest of the team, as though you were its flock. Take care to teach it to control its impulse to run away from battle. Caves are great places to train Natu as they are abundant in Machop and Zubat, Pokémon that Natu has a great advantage over, but be sure to avoid Geodude.

Natu and Xatu are very fond of the outdoors, so make sure to have it walk outside its Pokéball often, as this will increase its happiness and affection towards you. Fully grown Xatu need at least an hour of time to perform regular Clairvoyance, which keeps their minds sharp. Bring it to a variety of different areas for this and its Psychic abilities will sharpen. [Trainer's note: Some detective agencies often employ Xatu, alongside other Psychic Pokémon, to use their skills to find the locations of a criminals or other pieces of vital information, so a Xatu might come in handy if you ever lose something important]

Take note that this line of Pokémon might be allergic to some kinds of human food, like dairy products and chocolate. Take, for example, an unfortunate case of a Xatu who was hospitalized for 3 weeks after eating a delicious chocolate cake. Moomoo Milk has not been observed to have any adverse effects on Natu or Xatu, however. Like all other Pokémon, be certain to treat it with care and remember TheGoldenRule.

While most human Psychics prefer pyschic Pokémon as empathic partners, Xatu is an unpopular choice: empathizing with a Xatu's clairvoyance is not good for a person's mental health.

!!Courting and Childrearing

Natu become fertile 5 years after birth, just before becoming sexually mature after evolution to a Xatu. [Trainer's note: Technically, an older Natu is already able to copulate and bear children, but it's unable to perform the mating rituals required to attract a mate.] Xatu mate every Fall and gather in large groups at the ancient ruins where previous Natu were born. Females perform specific signals with their wings to call the attention of a male. The female then proceeds to perform a memory game of wing movements, which the male must imitate without mistake. The sequence gets successively longer and harder as the male clears each repetition. After about 5 successful repetitions the female agrees to mate. If a male interrupts another male's courting game, they engage in a telepathic battle to determine who will get to continue the mating ritual.

After the mating season is over, male Xatu leave the mating grounds to search for food for their pregnant females, allowing them and their chicks to survive the winter. If properly nourished, a female will lay up to 3 eggs which will hatch at the beginning of Spring. After the eggs hatch, the Xatu couples, carrying their young on their heads, fly away from the ruins to set up a new nest in their own chosen habitats. Xatu are serially monogamous, and couples stay together for only 3 years, when their spawn are ready to live on their own.

!!Social Structure

Natu are very social Pokémon, and appear in flocks of up to 20 members. There is no dominant member among these flocks and each will treat any other as equals, even sharing their food equally between members. If a lonely Natu approaches an already-formed flock, it will be gladly welcomed to the flock. When they evolve into Xatu, they become solitary creatures which will again appear in large groups only during mating season. If a Xatu detects another Xatu in its territory it will simply ignore it.
