!!Individual examples:
* ''VideoGame/{{ARMS}}'':
** Ribbon Girl is canonically seventeen but fans are more likely to depict her as a few years older.
** Twintelle as a CoolBigSis towards Ribbon Girl, Min-Min, and Mechanica. This also often involves Mechanica or Ribbon Girl being infatuated with her.
** Min-Min and Ribbon Girl are often depicted as friends (or more) due to their similar age.
** Spring Man being the son of Dr. Coyle and Max Brass. This is due to a resemblance between the characters, Coyle being in her 40s, and Coyle and Brass having been friends in the past.
* ''VideoGame/AnimalCrossing'' fans tend to refer to Timmy and Tommy, the two SingleMindedTwins who come to work for Tom Nook, as Nook's "nephews." In-game, though, they're given no relation to him other than that. Fandom simply extrapolated based on the commonality of ChasteToons. They call him "Uncle Nook" in later games, likely due to the Japanese versions using the word ''ojisan'' which is roughly translated to "uncle" but is often a way of hailing a man who's older than you, whom you know (think of a little kid calling a friend of his/her mom's "auntie").
* ''VideoGame/AstralChain'': Since whichever member of the SiblingTeam you don't pick is named "Akira Howard" regardless of gender, fans like to depict ''both'' siblings with the name. Their first names are typically written with different characters (such as katakana for one and hiragana for the other) to get around the OneSteveLimit.
* ''VideoGame/BangDreamGirlsBandParty'': Many Fandom believes that one of the characters, [[SpoiledSweet Kokoro Tsurumaki]] come from Yakuza family, because in one of the event story, a faculty member consider not punishing her because if she were to punish her then she wouldn't get a job in any city.
* Within the world of ''VideoGame/BanjoKazooie'', fandom makes much ado about the relationship between the two titular characters... even those who don't necessarily engage in {{Shipping}}. While in-series, they're PlatonicLifePartners (with a side order of VitriolicBestBuds), they do live together, go everywhere together, and have the platonic equivalent of several AwLookTheyReallyDoLoveEachOther moments. Thus, many fans assume that they're a BattleCouple. Whether this is a CrackPairing or not depends on your tastes.
* Due to the sequel having been trapped in a vague DevelopmentHell (and turning out to be a prequel when it eventually resurfaced), ''VideoGame/BeyondGoodAndEvil'' fans have had to speculate for themselves about a lot of the game's backstory, character motives, and the results of the game's vague epilogue/[[TheStinger Stinger]]. Due to its location, many fans tend to assume that the effects of TheVirus on lovable sidekick Pey'j were the direct result of heroine/local MacGuffinTurnedHuman Jade bringing him BackFromTheDead. Due to the game's ending PhotoMontage, fans also tend to assume that TheBigGuy, Double H, moves in with Jade (and also tends to give him a BodyguardCrush on her).
* While the protagonists of ''VideoGame/CarnEvil'' were never given names, fans tend to call Player 1 Jacob and Player 2 Lisa. It seems that this came about when someone added the two names to Website/{{Wikipedia}} in 2007, and the fandom ran with it. (The editor didn't even call Lisa Player 2; they gave the name to the innocent bystander, whose canon name is Betty.) In fan art, Jacob is depicted with a red jacket, a green t-shirt with blue jeans and carries a flashlight (which is close to how the protagonist appears in the very brief times we see him), while Lisa wears a blue crop-top jacket, jeans and a purple-and-white hat.
* ''Franchise/{{Castlevania}}'':
** While ''VideoGame/KidDracula'' [[CanonDiscontinuity is in no way]] [[SpinoffBabies canon to]] ''Castlevania'', fans like to use the story as an explanation for how Death is on a formal FirstNameBasis with Alucard (as seen in ''[[VideoGame/CastlevaniaSymphonyOfTheNight Symphony of the Night]]'') as well as to depict how Alucard ([[EpilepticTrees theorized]] to be Kid Dracula himself) was before his [[IHateYouVampireDad falling out]] with Dracula. Some even go as far as to depict Death helping to ''raise'' Alucard alongside Dracula and Lisa. It's also useful for characterizing [[ThatOneBoss Galamoth]], who does not have a speaking role in his other games.
** Speaking of Alucard, there are sectors of the fanbase who believe that, due to his ties to [[VideoGame/CastlevaniaLegends Sonia Belmont]] and [[VideoGame/CastlevaniaRondoOfBlood Maria Renard]], Al is or was intended to be [[VideoGame/CastlevaniaIIIDraculasCurse Trevor's]] father and [[VideoGame/CastlevaniaBloodlines Eric Lecarde's]] ancestor. The first came about due to [[ImpliedLoveInterest Alucard and Sonia's rather intimate relationship]] despite only having one scene and [[AllThereInTheManual some past history]] together, as well as [[http://www.vgmuseum.com/end/gb/a/cvl_2.htm the best ending]] revealing [[BabiesEverAfter Sonia to be with child]], one who "would carry on the fate and tragedy of the Belmont family, and '''the bloodline of dark ways'''" and "be praised by all the people as a hero." (It should also be noted that, just like how Alucard bears many similarities to the eponymous hero of ''Literature/VampireHunterD'', Sonia is an {{Expy}} of Doris Lang from the novel's first volume and its corresponding OVA.) The second had less hints to go off of besides [[https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/boards/196885-castlevania-symphony-of-the-night/57132327 extensive use of]] InconsistentSpelling [[labelnote:(in short...)]]Eric's surname in [[DubNameChange the Japanese version]], Rikādo (presumably Ricardo), is phonetically close to Alucard ("A'''rukādo'''") and may even be a portmanteau of "Renard" and "Alucard"[[/labelnote]] and Eric's possession of the Alucard Spear, as Maria shows romantic interest in Alucard at the end of ''[[VideoGame/CastlevaniaSymphonyOfTheNight Symphony of the Night]]'' with no indication he reciprocated, only Richter telling Maria [[ShipperOnDeck to go after him]] in the best ending. Then, around the time of ''[[VideoGame/CastlevaniaJudgment Judgment]]''[='s=] release, a RadioDrama titled ''Nocturne of Recollection'' depicted the two living together a year after ''[=SotN=]'', with Alucard [[DefrostingIceQueen eventually growing closer to Maria by the end]]. Note that the former ''was'' originally [[https://web.archive.org/web/20210126054015/http://www007.upp.so-net.ne.jp/fukuda/game/dracula/belmond.html confirmed to be canon]] [[WordOfGod by the game developers]] in an issue of ''Famitsu 64+'' prior to IGA's relegation of ''Legends'' to CanonDiscontinuity.
** There are fans who continue to believe that Maria and Richter's love interest Annette are sisters, despite this detail only existing in ''[[VideoGame/CastlevaniaDraculaX Dracula X]]'' (which is set in a continuity [[AlternateContinuity separate from]] ''Rondo''). The commonly given justification is that it gives Maria a stronger, more compelling reason for joining Richter in his fight against Dracula (never mind the fact that Maria [[DemotedToExtra isn't even playable]] in ''[[ReformulatedGame Dracula X]]'') as well as searching for him when he disappears between ''Rondo'' and ''[=SotN=]''. There's also the fact that the original localization of ''[=SotN=]'' retained [[RelatedInTheAdaptation Annette and Maria's revised relationship]] from ''Dracula X'', meaning this particular assertion could actually be seen as deuterocanonical depending on who you ask.
** Most fans have accepted August 21st, 2017, the date of [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solar_eclipse_of_August_21,_2017 a solar eclipse over the United States,]] as the birth date of ''VideoGame/CastlevaniaAriaOfSorrow'''s protagonist Soma Cruz.
** Similarly, you'll be hard pressed to find a large number of ''Sorrow'' fans who ''don't'' believe in the idea of a ReincarnationRomance playing out between [[spoiler:[[ChildhoodFriendRomance Soma and Mina]]]], with the latter serving as the reincarnation of [[spoiler:Dracula's departed loves [[VideoGame/CastlevaniaLamentOfInnocence Elisabetha]] and [[VideoGame/CastlevaniaSymphonyOfTheNight Lisa]]]]. While it's true that[[spoiler:, much like Dracula, losing Mina]] in one of ''[[VideoGame/CastlevaniaDawnOfSorrow Dawn]]''[='s=] MultipleEndings causes [[spoiler:Soma to willingly become the new Dark Lord]], never mind the duology's [[TomatoInTheMirror reincarnation angle]] giving some weight to the possibility, any "evidence" is circumstantial at best. This is largely owed to [[spoiler:Mina's name (Mina Hakuba) being taken from [[Literature/{{Dracula}} Mina Harker]], who is indeed the reincarnation of Dracula's wife in ''Film/BramStokersDracula'']]. For that matter, the idea that [[spoiler:Lisa herself is Elisabetha's reincarnation]] has only been implied in-universe but never officially confirmed.
* ''VideoGame/ChronoTrigger'':
** It's long been stated by certain ''Chrono Trigger'' and ''VideoGame/ChronoCross'' fans that the royal family of Zeal dye their hair blue. This is never stated in the games or by WordOfGod, though it's often told by fans that someone in Chronopolis says it (they don't) or was mistranslated in the U.S. (it wasn't) or it was in the [=PS1=] remake (it wasn't) or again, that it was left out in the U.S. (it still wasn't). The theory mainly exists to explain why [[spoiler:Schala]] has blond hair in ''Chrono Cross'', because the game never explains why [[spoiler:Kid, who is explicitly Schala's clone, is blond, as well as Schala herself in the closing scenes of the game]]. There are many that understand this to simply be fan theory, but internet legend sometimes elevates this to canon.
** Lucca as the [[ChildhoodFriendRomance Unlucky Childhood Friend]] of Crono's who was just [[CannotSpitItOut unable to admit her feelings]] and then [[IWantMyBelovedToBeHappy stood aside for Marle]] is such a common fan assumption that it's actually rarer to find portrayals of her that take her at her word that they're PlatonicLifePartners. Granted, the game {{canon}} itself doesn't totally [[ShipSinking rule out the possibility]].
* ''VideoGame/ClubPenguin'':
** ''Club Penguin'' has quite a dedicated fanon community, which is mainly centered at the [[Website/ClubPenguinFanon Club Penguin Fanon Wiki.]] ([[http://fanon.clubpenguinwiki.info/ Link here.]])
** A fairly large portion of the fanon community refers to Klutzy as a girl, [[ViewerGenderConfusion even though Klutzy is referred to as a boy in canon]].
* ''VideoGame/CodeVein'': Even though Louis' eyes are canonically both red, fans like to depict him as having heterochromia, due to his right eye being hidden by his hair the entire game.
* ''VideoGame/CrashBandicoot'': Many fans believe that Cortex is Nina's father, not her uncle. This is due to a slip-up he has in ''[[VideoGame/CrashTwinsanity Twinsanity]]''.
* ''Franchise/{{Danganronpa}}'':
** Most artwork of characters from ''VisualNovel/DanganronpaTriggerHappyHavoc'' [[spoiler:as Future Foundation members]] depicts Hagakure with his hair in a ponytail. This was made [[AscendedFanon canon]] in the design sketches included in the ''VideoGame/DanganronpaAnotherEpisodeUltraDespairGirls'' artbook.
** Almost every fan agrees on the theory that [[spoiler:Ryouko Otonashi is Junko Enoshima's real name, and that both of the twins' names are fake names]]. While nothing in ''Literature/DanganronpaZero'' says this to be true, it fits very well into what is shown.
** Nearly every bit of artwork for after the events of ''VisualNovel/Danganronpa2GoodbyeDespair'' has [[spoiler:Kuzuryu wearing his eyepatch, and being the one who transplanted Enoshima's right eye into himself, due to the person in the CG has a near identical hairstyle and is transplanted his right eye, the same one Kuzuryu lost]].
* Due to the series having a JigsawPuzzlePlot that largely relies on StoryBreadcrumbs, ''VideoGame/DarkSouls'' ends up getting a lot of this.
** ''VideoGame/DarkSoulsI'':
*** Some fans believe that female knights are referred to with the word "Knightess". The only real proof of this in the game is the Darkmoon Knightess, who even then is also referred to as the Lady of the Darkling and the Darkmoon Knight by the game. Despite this, fans still seem to extend this term to other female knight characters throughout the series.
*** The Fair Lady's real name is believed by some fans to be Quelaan, though the only actual source to claim this as the case comes from a mistranslation in an art book, which was actually meant to refer to another character, her sister Quelana.
** ''VideoGame/DarkSoulsII'':
*** Many fans believe that the Great Old Ones are [[spoiler:{{reincarnation}}s of the first game's Lord Soul bearers]]. While the game does confirm that the Old Souls are [[spoiler:the latent power of the Lord Souls, them being outright reincarnations is never confirmed]].
*** Even prior to ''[[UpdatedRerelease Scholar of the First Sin]]'' confirming it as canon, most fans came to the conclusion that [[spoiler:the Last Giant and the Giant Lord fought in the Memory of Jeigh]] were the same person, due to the two sharing a {{leitmotif}}.
*** Many fans were convinced that the Ancient Dragon was actually [[spoiler:Aldia, having abandoned his humanity in order to cure the undead curse]], though ''Scholar of the First Sin'' would prove this theory wrong.
*** It's generally believed that Sir Alonne and the Old Iron King fought each other when Alonne chose to leave the king out of disgust of his growing lust for power. Some even go as far as to say that the Old Iron King killed Sir Alonne.
*** Mytha, the Baneful Queen, is believed to have been the Old Iron King's wife, due to the existence of the Belfry Sol implying the Old Iron King was the "Prince" of Venn, who fell in love with the Princess of Alken, [[GreenEyedMonster leading Mytha to]] [[LoveRuinsTheRealm poison herself and the Harvest Valley]].
*** Sir Raime is believed to have defected from Vendrick's service due to [[GodSaveUsFromTheQueen Nashandra]]. While Raime was exiled from the kingdom after losing a fight to Velstadt, him leaving specifically because he realized what Nashandra was is not confirmed.
** ''VideoGame/DarkSoulsIII'':
*** Pickle Pee is usually depicted in fanworks not as a talking crow like the game implies she is, but rather as a [[CuteMonsterGirl cute harpy girl]].
*** Some fans believe Vordt and the Dancer's relationship was romantic in nature, though the game only indicates that the two were close comrades-in-arms.
*** Because his armor is found after beating the Nameless King, fans generally believe that Ornstein left Anor Londo to find the Nameless King, with some fans even believing that Ornstein eventually became a dragon himself.
*** While the game itself doesn't imply this, because the Catacombs of Carthus is found under the spot the Abyss Watchers are fought, it's been accepted by fans that after learning about Wolnir in the Abyss, the Abyss Watchers destroyed Carthus and set up shop on top of the Catacombs as a way to guard it, which is how they eventually became corrupted by the Abyss.
* It seemed to be agreed upon in the ''VideoGame/DawnOfWar'' fandom that the Imperial Guard won the Kaurava campaign in ''Soulstorm'' even though the sequels never really revealed who won the conflict, only that [[spoiler: the Space Marines lost]].
* Though there's not much evidence to support it other than somewhat similar appearances (and Etna's commitment to fanservice), many ''Franchise/{{Disgaea}}'' fans have it that Etna, Hanako and Raspberyl are all adolescent [[SuccubiAndIncubi succubi]].
* ''Franchise/DragonAge'':
** Fanon often states that, if he was recruited, [[TheAtoner Nathaniel Howe]] is promoted to Warden-Constable under the Hero of Ferelden. His ties to politics, as well as reliability out of the six ''VideoGame/DragonAgeOriginsAwakening'' companions, makes him the preferred candidate for the position. This is all despite the [[PlayerCharacter Warden-Commander]] not being able to, nor ever, choose their Warden-Constable.
** Widespread ''VideoGame/DragonAgeII'' fanon has it that [[{{Cloudcuckoolander}} Merrill]] is a virgin (she usually fails to understand innuendo) and [[ByronicHero Anders]] is claustrophobic due to [[GoMadFromTheIsolation having spent a year locked in solitary confinement]] (he does comment in a frightened voice "I really need to stay out of [[BeneathTheEarth the Deep Roads]]" if clicked there, though there might be other reasons for that). It's also generally agreed that Danarius sexually abused [[JerkassWoobie Fenris]] when he was a slave, though that was a case of WriterInducedFanon, and has since been confirmed by WordOfGod. Another bit of fanon is that Fenris is an alcoholic, and that he had dark brown or black hair before the lyrium ritual gave him MysticalWhiteHair (since his eyebrows are black while his hair is stark white). This has led to [[FanonDiscontinuity fandom backlash]] as his natural hair color was revealed to be blond.
** ''VideoGame/DragonAgeInquisition'':
*** Though pale, bald, and cerebral, ''many'' Solas fans have taken some early [[http://41.media.tumblr.com/e775f10132659b9afac5dd1157a9a579/tumblr_nfx8vjuPZL1tte9mqo3_1280.png concept art]] to mean that's what he looked like when he was younger (WordOfGod has placed him to be in his mid-forties [[spoiler: apparently by [[{{Immortality}} ancient elven standards]]]]), including the smug/cocky disposition. (It helps that Solas has brown eyebrows and admits to being very "cocky and HotBlooded" when he was younger.)
*** Many Inquisition Elvhen fans have also generally agreed that Abelas has long silver hair under his hood (similarly tied to the upper back of his head and shaved to the sides of his head).
* Ness' design from ''VideoGame/{{EarthBound|1994}}'' is [[{{expy}} near-identical]] to Ninten from ''VideoGame/EarthBoundBeginnings'', however Ness is far more popular than Ninten due to SequelDisplacement. This has caused fans to almost always draw Ninten's design differently than it canonically is. This usually involves giving him the handkerchief that he wore in the [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yQUN7QAnMp0 live-action commercial]] for the game, but can also involve editing the stripes on his shirt to be red-blue-white like in the commercial. This is so commonplace that many think Ninten's canonical design has him wearing a handkerchief.
* ''Franchise/TheElderScrolls'' series of games has various out-of-game developer works, ranging from [[http://www.imperial-library.info/content/developers production commentaries]] to [[http://c0da.es/ fanfiction.]]
* The AdvancingWallOfDoom that appears on Worlds 3-4 and 6-6 of ''VideoGame/{{Eversion}}'', especially the latter, is generally agreed by the fans to be [[spoiler:[[Franchise/CthulhuMythos The Lurker at the Threshold, avatar of Yog-Sothoth]]]].
* ''VideoGame/FarCry5'': Jacob Seed is canonically 44 but some fans depict him as 47, based on incorrect information put on the ''Franchise/FarCry'' Wiki that has since been removed.
* Most ''VideoGame/FearAndHunger'' fans have concluded that [[spoiler:Cahara was the one who died in the process of helping the God of Fear and Hunger ascend, as the other three protagonists' fates are implicitly accounted for by ''VideoGame/FearAndHungerTermina'' (D'arce assisting the Kaiser's ascension, Enki surviving to write the Skin Bibles, and Ragnvaldr [[AmbigouslyRelated being hinted to have August as a descendant]]), thus leaving Cahara the only one left by process of elimination]].
* ''VideoGame/FZero'':
** ''F-Zero'' is subjected to copious amounts of fanon, due in part to the (now defunct) [[WordOfDante North American website]] for ''VideoGame/FZeroX'', in which it included many character elements that would later be adopted by fans (the big one being Douglas Jay Falcon as Captain Falcon's name) several of these elements were roundly {{Jossed}} when ''VideoGame/FZeroGX'' came out several years later and there was a more unified translation. But while it could be considered fanon in the basic sense of the word, a lot of the NA ''F-Zero X'' information is still treated like official canon despite its dubious source.
** And while ''[[Anime/FZeroGPLegend GP Legend]]'' is considered an AlternateContinuity series, a popular piece of fanon is that anime-only Lisa Brilliant (the wife of Samurai Goroh) is the mother of game-only Dai Goroh (Samurai Goroh's son, making his debut in ''F-Zero GX/AX'').
* ''VideoGame/GoldenSun'':
** Aside from the [[DieForOurShip shipping wars]] that dominated the ''Golden Sun'' fandom near the start, there were also a couple of random ideas that passed into fanon. For one, there was the idea that the Adepts were naturally averse to their opposite element: Mars (fire) Adepts were afraid of water, Jupiter (wind) Adepts hated the desert, and so on. Nothing in the game really supported this (Garet, the party's strongest Mars Adept, is ''excited'' to see the ocean, whereas ''no one'' liked trekking through the Lamakan Desert), but aside from the aforementioned, it didn't contradict too much and was a fun way to add personality to the characters, so it stuck.
** Another idea that caught on for a while before it faded out was [[FanNickname referring to Isaac as]], for some reason, [[GratuitousJapanese Isaac-chan]].
** Several fans have decided that [[ThatOneBoss Star Magician]] is female, due to its sprite having very wide hips.
* The cult classic NES game ''VideoGame/TheGuardianLegend'' has a great example of Fanon. In the original Japanese game, the Guardian of Earth was apparently named Miria in the instruction manual, but the English language release left her unnamed. In the years after its release, the game saw a few fanfics put up online, one of which referred to the Guardian as Alyssa. For some reason, this caught on, and she's been referred to by that name by almost any fan of the game since. Look up ''TGL'' on almost any retro gaming site now and it will probably mention Alyssa.
* ''Franchise/{{Halo}}'':
** Quite a few fans consider ''WebAnimation/RedVsBlue'' to be a sort of "unofficial canon." Basically, they acknowledge that it isn't really canon, but still consider it to be just as much a part of the ''Halo'' universe as the actual games.
** Since the launch of the Cortana app on Microsoft Windows, a common fan theory is that ''Halo''[='s=] Cortana is descended from it in the future. Since the app was originally named for the game character, it makes it a case of a StableTimeLoop.
* None of the protagonists of ''VideoGame/HarvestMoon'' (now known as ''VideoGame/StoryOfSeasons'') are named Jack, but Pete (the boy with backwards cap) is so ubiquitously known as Jack among the fandom that his name is listed as Jack in many fanfiction sites.
* ''VisualNovel/HigurashiWhenTheyCry'':
** It's generally assumed that as adults Rena will be a detective, Keiichi will be a teacher, Shion will be a bodyguard, and Mion will be her clan's leader. The latter is canon, however the other three are not.
** Rika is a direct descendant of Hanyuu. This is heavily implied but never confirmed.
** Due to the [[FanPreferredCouple popularity of the ship]], Rika and Satoko as eventually becoming a couple is this.
* It's unknown what the bond between the protagonists of ''VideoGame/IceClimber'' are. The most common beliefs are either that they're siblings or that they're lovers. [[BrotherSisterIncest Sometimes they're both.]] Likewise their ages are [[VagueAge ambiguous]], but fans typically have them as children around 10-15.
* ''VideoGame/KanColle'':
** The idea that if a Fleet Girl dies (i.e. is sunk) because of her Admiral's carelessness or incompetence, she'll be [[BackFromTheDead brought back]] [[CameBackWrong as a member]] [[FaceHeelTurn of the enemy Abyssal Fleet]] by her grudge, has found strong foothold in the fandom, helped by the [[DracoInLeatherPants solid]] [[EvilIsCool popularity]] of the Abyssal Fleet. There's even a Pixiv tag dedicated to the "corrupted" Fleet Girls.
** A related idea is that members of the existing Abyssal Fleet were once Fleet Girls. This one sometimes comes up as a backstory for the [[EnsembleDarkhorse Wo-class aircraft carrier]] in particular.
*** Note that both these ideas were canonized for [[Anime/KanColle the anime adaptation]].
** Another common fanon concept is giving the Abyssal Fleet a commanding officer as an EvilCounterpart of the player character's Admiral, usually wearing a black uniform to contrast with the player's white one.
** Warspite is often thought to be physically disabled, due to her default posture being sitting on her chair-like rigging. While official works have proven that she can stand if needed, the fanon is historically plausible; the real HMS ''Warspite'' took a hit to the rudder during the Battle of Jutland that was never ''quite'' fully repaired, and she suffered chronic steering problems for the rest of her career.
* ''VideoGame/KingsQuest'':
** An incriminating letter found in ''VideoGame/KingsQuestVIHeirTodayGoneTomorrow'' was meant to be "merely" a document implicating the game's BigBad in the events of [[VideoGame/KingsQuestVAbsenceMakesTheHeartGoYonder the fifth game]]. However, the way the letter was worded implied a much wider conspiracy at work. The fans started speculating about the [[LegionOfDoom Society of the Black Cloak]], and have pretty much run with the idea that most (and possibly all), the enemies of Daventry's royal family belong to its ranks. The FanRemake of ''VideoGame/KingsQuestIIRomancingTheThrone'' uses this assumption with the character of The Father, and the FanSequel has also introduced a member of the Black Cloak Society as the family's nemesis.
** Speaking of, the Creator/AGDInteractive games are entirely fan-made works, and the FanRemake of ''KQII'' wildly contradicts the original in several places, but has enough of a following to take on fanon status.
** Another, though more contested, bit of fanon states that Rosella will eventually marry Edgar and move to Etheria, leaving Graham to appoint ''[[VideoGame/KingsQuestMaskOfEternity Mask of Eternity]]''[='s=] Connor [=MacLir=] as heir, the way Edward the Benevolent did for him. The controversy stems from ''Mask of Eternity'''s [[ContestedSequel dubious standing]] [[FanonDiscontinuity in the fandom]].
* ''VideoGame/KnightsOfTheOldRepublic'':
** Female Revan stories outnumber the "canonical" male by about a five-to-one margin. ''KOTOR'' [[GameFavoredGender has several bonuses for a female character anyway]]; Carth's dialogue tree being largest in-game (only half of it accessible to male players), [[GayOption a second romance option]] with Juhani, and [[LastSecondChance a third ending]] where a Dark Side female could choose to sacrifice herself, and [[Creator/BioWare David Gaider]] made the whole thing clear as mud when he showed up on the fan site and submitted a female Revan story.
** Apparently this fanbase for female Revans led to the Exile in ''[[VideoGame/KnightsOfTheOldRepublicIITheSithLords KOTOR II]]'' being declared canonically female.
*** And then guess which gender fans decided they preferred ''this'' time. [[note]][[DontExplainTheJoke Male.]] This probably has something to do with [[MutuallyExclusivePartyMembers Handmaiden being vastly preferred to the Disciple.]] Also, [[http://lparchive.org/Knights-of-the-Old-Republic-II/ Jedi Jesus.]][[/note]]
** Another popular fan theory is that Carth Onasi is an untrained Force Sensitive. This is based on the character's uncanny intuition, bizarre luck, and the fact he came from a planet populated by Jedi washouts. It also doesn't hurt that he was able to see and ''understand'' a Force Ghost (something only Force Sensitives can do according to the d20 rulebook) and that his son [[spoiler:was training as a Sith]].
** Likewise, it's also common to write Carth and Mission falling into a father and daughter dynamic, given that her brother (and only living family member) is a complete slimeball and that Carth's son is about Mission's age.
* The song "Hometown Domina" from ''VideoGame/LegendOfMana'' has widely accepted [[WithLyrics fanmade lyrics]] [[SpeakingSimlish in a made-up language]]. You can check out one performance [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UlQCZqaTfG4 here.]]
* Within the ''VideoGame/LikeADragon'' fandom, it's become a somewhat popular theory that [[TheDon Daigo Dojima]] is actually secretly the illegitimate child of Masaru Sera, as Daigo looks way more like him than his canonical father, Sohei Dojima. There's also the fact that Sohei was [[HateSink an all-around awful guy]], whereas Sera's pretty well-liked.
* ''VideoGame/{{Lisa}}'': While WordOfGod says that there is no "canon" party, the most common choices for Brad's party in fan content are [[JokeCharacter Terry]], [[LightningBruiser Olan]] and [[TheRedMage Nern]].
* ''VideoGame/LiveALive'':
** Likely in part due to her EnsembleDarkHorse status, [[ActionGirl Lei Kugo]] is usually portrayed in fan works as [[spoiler:the chosen successor of Earthen Heart among the 3 possible options. Yun Jou, while not as prominent as Lei, is also regularly portrayed with the role, while Hong Hakka is rarely ever used]]. On a similar note, Lei is also regularly portrayed in fan works as [[spoiler:the protagonist of the Dominion of Hate chapter, due to the similarities between [[FallenHero Oersted]] and herself prior to her CharacterDevelopment, [[NotSoDifferentRemark something she herself points out if chosen as the protagonist]]]].
** Oboromaru is usually depicted in fan works as a teenager around the same age as Akira and Lei, due to his status as an inexperienced ninja still in training, as well as the "maru" in his name being a suffix given to young boys around the time his chapter takes place.
** When it comes to the end-of-chapter decisions for the Twilight of Edo Japan and Wild West chapters, fan works are more likely to portray [[spoiler:Oboromaru accepting UsefulNotes/SakamotoRyoma's offer to join him and the Sundown Kid sparing Mad Dog]] as the canon endings to the chapters.
** The Sundown Kid is regularly portrayed in fan art as a smoker, due to it fitting his status as TheExpyWithNoName, as well as cigars being a healing item in his chapter in the original SNES version of the game.
** Many fans often depict Akira's forehead scar and the gold highlights in his hair as being caused by his PsychicPowers awakening.
** While Akira's religious identity isn't touched upon, the use of angelic imagery in his Divine attacks has led many fans to depict him as a UsefulNotes/JapaneseChristian, usually with the idea that he converted to help cope with his father's murder.
** The remake adds some FlavorText in the Distant Future chapter where checking Kato's shelf reveals that he owns a mint condition Steel Titan figure. This has resulted in many fans believing that Tobei eventually started a media franchise based around the [[HumongousMecha Steel Titan]], and that Kato is a fan of it. This often includes an anime series, due to Tobei already having created a theme song for it.
** Many fan works, particularly among the Japanese fandom, like to present [[spoiler:Oersted, Streibough, and Alethea as ChildhoodFriends, usually portraying Oersted as the son of a great knight and Streibough as the son of a court mage]].
** In spite of being generally agreed to be the [[LowTierLetdown worst of the game's protagonists stat wise]], Akira Tadokoro is the most popular of the game's protagonists to be portrayed as [[spoiler:the protagonist of the Dominion of Hate. This is likely due to the fact that in the room containing the statues of Odio's incarnations, Odeo, the incarnation Akira fights, is the one in the center during Oersted's visit to the room, and remains in the center if Akira is chosen as the protagonist (unlike with the other protagonists, whose own Odio incarnation will be placed at the center if they're chosen). Akira's [[BonusDungeon Trial dungeon]] is also the most unique and story relevant of the characters' dungeons, being populated by the spirits of the people of Lucrece. Akira and Odio's attacks also counter each other in terms of design, with Akira's most powerful attack having heavy angel symbolism while Odio's attacks are more demonic in nature]].
** Many fan works like to portray the idea that [[spoiler:the protagonists will be able to meet again after the end of the game]]. The most common versions of this idea come in the form of [[spoiler:Oboromaru meeting the Sundown Kid again, due to the Twilight of Edo Japan chapter taking place some time before 1867 (as shown by Oboromaru preventing Sakamoto Ryōma's assassination in the GoldenEnding) making it entirely possible for the two to exist in the same time period, Masaru meeting a practitioner of Earthen Heart during his journey, and an aged Masaru meeting with Akira again, due to the general belief that the Near Future chapter takes place only a few decades after the Present Day chapter]].
* ''Franchise/{{Metroid}}'':
** The fandom has a lot of "information" which does not appear to have been released in any official source. ''[[VideoGame/MetroidOtherM Other M]]'', in particular, is a ''very'' divisive game because of its assertions about the nature of the protagonist.
** A subset of the fandom believes that Samus is a trans woman. The fact that the only "evidence" of this is an offhanded comment made during an interview by one of the background artists of ''[[VideoGame/SuperMetroid Super Metroid]]'', meant seemingly as an off-color joke, makes this a controversial headcanon in the eyes of those in the game's fanbase who are transgender themselves.
** When not due to a FoeYayShipping CrackPairing, Ridley is often portrayed as having a twisted, {{Yandere}} love/obsession for Samus, similar to Creator/HeathLedger's Joker in ''Film/TheDarkKnight''.
--->'''Ridley:''' Hahaha...I don't wanna kill you! What would I do without you, go back to raiding Federation transports? No! No...you complete '''me'''.
* It's a popular idea among fans of ''VideoGame/{{Minecraft}}'' that items dropped on the ground de-spawn because [[ActionBomb Creepers]] steal them.
* ''VideoGame/ModernWarfare2'': A disproportionately high number of fans seem to believe that "Raptor," the VIP that you protect in the mission "Wolverines!", is the President of the United States -- if only because [[RuleOfCool it makes it seem so much more badass when you save his life]]. In the actual game, his identity and position in the government are never revealed and there are lots of people who would qualify for his level of protection. About the only evidence supporting the theory is that his callsign, "Raptor," alludes to a large bird of prey; the POTUS' traditional Secret Service callsign is "Eagle," another large bird of prey.
* ''Franchise/MortalKombat'':
** Among the ''Mortal Kombat'' fandom, while ''[[VideoGame/MortalKombatShaolinMonks Shaolin Monks]]'' is regarded as a very good spin-off, [[BroadStrokes the sheer amount of liberties taken in regards to the plot]] (and ''several'' [[{{Retcon}} contradictions]] to previous continuity, which did ''[[BrokenBase not]]'' go over well with the fans) made it hard for many to believe that the game (assumed to be a retelling of the [[VideoGame/MortalKombat1992 first]] and [[VideoGame/MortalKombatII second]] installments) is canon. However, a somewhat prevalent fan theory has popped up since then, claiming ''Shaolin Monks'' might exist in the same timeline as ''[[VideoGame/MortalKombatVsDCUniverse MK vs. DC Universe]]'' (itself supposedly set between ''[[VideoGame/MortalKombat3 3]]'' and ''[[VideoGame/MortalKombat4 4]]''), explaining all of the odd changes in plot developments and thus creating [[AlternateTimeline another reality]] (the original canon being the first, [[VideoGame/MortalKombat9 the 2011 reboot]] and [[VideoGame/MortalKombatX its]] [[VideoGame/MortalKombat11 sequels]] as the second, [[VideoGame/MortalKombat1 the 2023 game]] serving as the third, and these two games comprising the fourth). While Creator/{{Midway|Games}}[=/=]Creator/NetherrealmStudios has not commented on the matter, the fact that ''[=MK11=]'' [[spoiler:provides a glimpse at several more timelines overseen by BigBad [[TimeMaster Kronika]] (with Kronika herself all but outright saying she's pressed the ResetButton countless times)]] gives the idea some degree of plausibility.
** Another case of FanonWelding is the idea that ''VideoGame/InjusticeGodsAmongUs'' is a StealthSequel to ''VideoGame/MortalKombatVsDCUniverse'', with the heroes of the "original" DCU meeting the ''Mortal Kombat'' characters before crossing over to the ''Injustice'' universe -- though it may also be the other way around. Some of Raiden and Sub-Zero's intro dialogues in ''VideoGame/Injustice2'' hint at this; sometimes their opponents remember them and other times they do not. However, an intro dialogue in ''VideoGame/MortalKombat11'' between Raiden and Sub-Zero implies that their guest appearance [[ItWasAllADream was just a vivid dream]], and Joker being recognized by other Kombatants in the Netherrealm timeline makes it very clear that it's all just [[ContinuityNod fanservicey references]]. Though since these games deal with TheMultiverse and TimeTravel respectively, one can still hold on to this fan theory.
** Another fan theory involves Sheeva from ''3'', a member of the Shokan race much like Goro and Kintaro. Whereas Kintaro was explicitly said to be Goro's cousin, Sheeva's relation to the Shokan prince (if ''any'', besides ''9'' stating that they hail from the same lineage of Shokan, the Draco tribe) has never been disclosed. Speculation commonly places her as either one of Goro's relatives (usually his sister or cousin) or his wife (of whom Goro is mentioned to have [[{{Polyamory}} seven]], according to the first game's official comic and instruction manual).
* In ''VideoGame/NewStyleBoutique'', loads of characters and places have been created. An example is Main/Shabnam.
* ''[[VideoGame/NiGHTSIntoDreams NiGHTS into Dreams...]]'':
** The gender of [=NiGHTS=] is never stated in any of the games. The first game's manual refers to it as "he, she or it", the second game avoids gender pronouns and gives it a female voice, and WordOfGod has stated more than once that [=NiGHTS=] doesn't have a specific gender. While most fans picks a gender they see it as it's still a generally agreed fanon that [=NiGHTS=] choose what gender it feels like being. This is the opposite of the early days of fandom, where any opinion that wasn't "[=NiGHTS=] is male and that's canon!" led to condescending, implications that you weren't a true fan, and/or being banned. There are still a few fans like this, but thankfully they're a minority.
** The character of all the other characters save for Reala and [=NiGHTS=] itself is completely based in fanon, to the extent that some people complained when the second game was released, saying that the characters "weren't true to canon." This seems to have been remedied somewhat over time, however characters such as Jackle are still prone to this. [=NiGHTS=] and Reala are still prone to fanon-based characterization, since it was only in ''[=JoD=]'' they got obvious personalities... and even then [[FanonDiscontinuity not everyone sees it as canon]].
* ''VideoGame/OctopathTraveler'':
** Many fanfics have Therion as the starting traveller, largely because it makes rather little sense for the other travellers to voluntarily help him.
** Due to [[https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/octopath-traveler/images/3/3e/AlfynTherionconcept.png concept art hinting at him hiding a large facial scar under his bangs,]] Therion is often portrayed in fanfics (in particular those shipping him with Alfyn) retaining the injury. Some fics will take it a step further and portray him as being blind in his injured eye.
* ''VideoGame/PlantsVsZombies'':
** Humanization fan arts of Sunflower almost always draw her with dark skin and blonde hair.
** Due of their similar appearances, fans like to depict Fume-Shroom, Puff-Shroom, and Scaredy-Shroom as brothers.
* ''VideoGame/{{Portal}}'':
** With the revelation in ''VideoGame/{{Portal 2}}'' that [[spoiler:SelfDemonstrating/{{GLaDOS}} is a brain uploaded human]], it's become widely accepted that the personality cores were created the same way.
** Further, Wheatley's theorized human self is almost universally described as [[InkSuitActor resembling]] Creator/StephenMerchant. He's usually given the full name of Wheatley [[MythologyGag Pendleton]].
** Virtually ''everybody'' assumes that [[HeroicMime Chell]] is the daughter of Aperture's founder Cave Johnson and his secretary Caroline. There is evidence to suggest she was the daughter of ''someone'' at Aperture (her apparent signature appears on a children's science project in the "Bring Your Daughter to Work Day" display) and the assumption is sort of understandable since Cave and Caroline are the only other human characters named in-game and [[spoiler:[=GLaDOS=], who has Caroline's mind inside her, is obsessed with Chell to an almost mother-like degree]], but nowhere does it imply she was anything near as important as ''the daughter of the founder''. Plus, Cave Johnson died in the early 1980s and was already [[http://t1.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcRz4dHOxT_HcG9wm4Poh4jO2dNbvgzjsxJwBs4f61DvkvOOC6UHAA old man]] at that point (he looked like [[http://t0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcR1St-hilbYCDv9ozHZgfB2kbfPRdp8DoT2ZUjaFIUzChkRUtq7 this]] circa 1943). In the first game, Chell looks like she could maybe be a young-looking forty-something at oldest, and in the higher-quality graphics of the second she doesn't look a day over 30. Cave ''could'' have [[MadScientist invented something]] to keep his daughter young or himself and Caroline fertile, and he's crazy enough to force people to spend years in stasis or something, but you still have to be ''really trying'' to interpret him as Chell's father to make it work.
*** There is also the fact that [[spoiler:the Prima Donna Turret, who is most likely controlled by [=GLaDOS=], explicitly calls Chell her daughter in one of the ending songs (in Italian)]]. Whether that's metaphorical or not is up to you.
** There is also a common belief that Chell has no memory of anything before ''Portal'' based purely on the fact that we are given no information on her backstory, and possibly the fact that she ''seemed'' to not know [=GLaDOS=] was evil.
** Humanized interpretations of Glados usually have her with a SciFiBobHaircut.
* ''Franchise/ResidentEvil'':
** ''Resident Evil'' in general has a lot of fanon, most of it left over from the pre-''[[VideoGame/ResidentEvil4 RE4]]'' years when Capcom seemed allergic to explaining anything. They would make a game specifically to answer a question, which would then confuse several other issues further.
** One notable and oddly widespread bit of fanon portrays Chris and Claire Redfield as being part American Indian, which seems to have its roots in Creator/GeorgeARomero's unused ''RE'' screenplay, as well as with the mistaken belief that the name Redfield is of American Indian origins (it's actually Scotch-Irish).
** A pretty common theory about why Wesker constantly wore sunglasses even before he had unnatural red eyes to disguise is that he had [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Photophobia photophobia]], a painful hypersensitivity to light.
* ''VideoGame/ReturnOfTheObraDinn'': Although the backstories of none of the crew are ever said, fans commonly believe that Winston Smith was once a slave, due to being an African-American and the game being set before the abolishment of slavery in America.
* ''Franchise/SilentHill'':
** Any discussion of ''Silent Hill'' tends to rely heavily on this, as much of the actual story elements are either widely open to interpretation or, if you [[NoExportForYou live in Japan]], it's [[AllThereInTheManual all there in the manual]].
** The lack of any explicit mention of Alessa's father in ''VideoGame/SilentHill1'' led to a fairly pervasive theory that he was Michael Kaufmann.
* ''VideoGame/TheSims'':
** ''VideoGame/TheSims2'' has some fanon despite being a WideOpenSandbox game. For example, the townie Meadow Thayer is often used to give a teen their first kiss (because she's one of the few female teenage townies), and there are certain Sims that are often played as gay like Frances Worhington or Nervous Subject.
** There's a little bit of joke fanon that the muffins a child make in ''VideoGame/TheSims3'' have meat in them. This is because vegetarian Sims get sick from eating them.
* In the first ''Slaves to Armok: God of Blood'' game, Armok is the [[TheMaker creator]] and [[DestroyerDeity destroyer]] [[TopGod deity]] of the game, giving an in-lore explanation for this game's procedural creation of the world, and save deletion. In ''[[ColonCancer Slaves to Armok: God of Blood]] - [[OddlyNamedSequel2ElectricBoogaloo Chapter II]]: [[VideoGame/DwarfFortress Dwarf Fortress]]'', he is completely absent from the game's setting, no worship of him is shown to exist inside of the in-game worlds, and Tarn Adams had no plans to implement him, saying the game's [[ColonCancer cumbersome name]] was mostly "[[RuleOfFun for kicks]]." However, this doesn't prevent the players from referencing him, making their dwarves swearing to Armok while telling their stories, or building obsidian cathedral dedicated to him (often with {{Human Sacrifice}}s), because of the conspicuous "''[[InNameOnly Slaves to Armok: God of Blood]]''" contained in the full game title. One of the most widespread interpretations says that Armok is actually the in-game representation of [[PlayerCharacter the player]], in which case [[VideoGameCrueltyPotential the sobriquet of "God of Blood" is well-earned]].
* ''VideoGame/SlyCooper'':
** Because Paris is the only RecurringLocation in the series, fans generally assume the gang lives there whenever not on a job. Some even suggest the main trio are of French nationality to explain why they always go back.
** Because he was allegedly [[WhatCouldHaveBeen originally meant to be bisexual]], has no {{Love Interest|s}}, and shows some AmbiguouslyGay characteristics throughout the series, some fans consider Murray to be either gay or bisexual.
* Amy from the ''VideoGame/{{Soul|Series}}'' series is almost invariably called "Amy Sorel" in fandom due to her being adopted by Raphael, but officially she's never called anything but "Amy," and Raphael himself has no reasons to actually give her his last name, given the Sorel clan not only betrayed him to save face, but fell into obscurity shortly afterward, leaving no social or economical advantage to use it. (In fan works, a common in-story justification for this trend is that Amy, being HappilyAdopted by Raphael, decides to use his family name out of love and respect, but the games have yet to confirm that line of thought.) Her age (which officially has always been "Unknown") is sometimes stated to be 14 thanks to someone editing it in in [[Website/{{Wikipedia}} The Other Wiki]], and people wrongly believing it came from the official site.
* Spice in ''VideoGame/{{Spore}}'' is, from a gameplay perspective, merely a commodity to be bought and sold at a profit; while it's not elaborated on much, the descriptions suggest that it is [[ExactlyWhatItSaysOnTheTin seasoning for food]] (also floor polish). However, the general consensus among fans is that spice is actually drugs, due to how the word is used in ''Franchise/{{Dune}}'' and the ''Franchise/StarWarsExpandedUniverse'' (and possibly some other SciFi franchises as well). User-made levels for ''Spore Galactic Adventures'' have shown examples of spice dealers, spice smugglers, spice junkies, and even [[DrugsAreBad a campaign to ban spice]].
* There are several ''Franchise/SpyroTheDragon'' fanfics, particularly those written after the release of the ''VideoGame/SpyroReignitedTrilogy'', in which the leaders of the five Dragon Realms -- the Artisans, Peace Keepers, Magic Crafters, Beast Makers and Dream Weavers -- are identified as Nestor, Titan, Cosmos, Bruno and Lateef, respectively. This may have something to do with the fact that, with the exception of Lateef, each of these dragons are the first that most players will rescue in each realm, with Nestor being literally right in front of Spyro at the beginning of the game. Furthermore, since the Artisans' Realm is where Spyro begins his adventure, it's a common assumption that Spyro himself is an Artisan, with Nestor often assuming the role of Spyro's father figure (his actual personality varies considerably, [[OCStandIn since he and every other elder dragon only have, at most, three lines in canon]]).
* In the ''VideoGame/StarCraft'' fandom, it is general consensus that the [[HiveQueen Overmind]] would transfer the minds of experienced Zerg into new bodies when they were inevitably killed.
* In ''VideoGame/{{Stellaris}}'', there are a number of massive crises that can cause massive havoc in the galaxy, and the fandom has a number of theories connecting them. Those which psionic abilities can communicate with the [[SwarmOfAlienLocusts Prethyon]] and find that they are [[spoiler:fleeing something they call "the Hunters"]], while it turns out the [[AIIsACrapshoot Contingency AI]] is [[spoiler:trying to prevent something called a "class-30 singularity"]]. And a psionically-adept player that prods too long into [[HyperspaceIsAScaryPlace the Shroud]] can eventually find out about [[spoiler:the End of the Cycle, a full-blown CosmicHorrorStory if the player takes the SchmuckBait]]. The running popular theory is that threat the first and second factions are referring to is the third.
* None of the [[HelloInsertNameHere player-named heroes]] in the ''VideoGame/{{Suikoden}}'' games actually have canonical names, but fans often use the names that were given in the Japanese novelizations of each title (i.e. the hero in [[VideoGame/SuikodenI the first]] ''VideoGame/{{Suikoden|I}}'' is known as Tir [=McDohl=]).
* ''VideoGame/SuperRobotWarsOriginalGeneration'':
** A relatively minor theory involving [[Characters/SuperRobotWarsCompact2 Excellen]] [[MsFanservice Browning]]: Because of her interactions with her female crewmates and friends, she is seen by the fandom as bisexual, given her [[TheTease teasing and flirtatiousness]] with [[HoYay both sexes]]; made more evident in the sequel during her scenes with [[Characters/SuperRobotWarsAdvance Lamia]] [[RobotGirl Loveless]]. In fact, they take this further when monsters show up, some of them composed of CombatTentacles. However, it's important to note she's [[SingleTargetSexuality only ever interested in getting the attention]] of her boyfriend, [[Characters/SuperRobotWarsCompact2 Kyosuke]] [[TheStoic Nanbu]], so this piece of {{Fanon}} is slight, and not hard evidenced enough. Still, many fan works would rather pair her up with other girls than guys.
** Similarly, [[Characters/SuperRobotWarsAdvance Axel Almer]] expressing shock when he learns that Kyosuke's partner is a woman has led to the theory that Kyosuke's AlternateUniverse [[AlternateSelf counterpart]], [[Characters/SuperRobotWarsOriginalGeneration Beowulf]], is gay. In truth, it's actually {{Foreshadowing}} the fact that [[spoiler:Excellen's AlternateUniverse counterpart isn't working alongside Beowulf, because she's actually [[Characters/SuperRobotWarsAdvance Lemon Browning]]]].
** Excellen seems to attract a lot of these. In the ''VideoGame/EndlessFrontier'' GaidenGame, [[spoiler:Lemon's name]] is mistranslated via {{Woolseyism}} into "Raymond", despite it canonically being the former. However, fans have adopted "Raymond Browning" as the name of her father, whom she mentions in ''Original Generation 2'', but is never seen.
** The fact he has [[BornLucky an unnatural streak of luck]] has made the fandom believe Kyosuke is an avid poker player, given his [[ILikeThoseOdds bad]] [[MillionToOneChance gambling]] [[TheGambler habits]], compounded with "[[CatchPhrase I don't mind betting on tough odds.]]" However, his luck tends to occur ''only'' when it [[NoOneCouldSurviveThat should normally kill a person]], such as a shuttle accident, a TransformingMecha [[VehicularSabotage sabotaged during testing]] or being beaten up by Axel to near death. This doesn't stop the fans from thinking Kyosuke's luck extends to card games.
* Fans of ''VideoGame/TalesOfSymphonia'' and ''VideoGame/TalesOfPhantasia'' universally cite a four thousand-year gap between them. No definitive answer on the time gap between them has been given by the developers. Fans took the year given in ''Phantasia''[='s=] InUniverse calendar and assumed that ''Symphonia''[='s=] ending acted as YearZero for a new calendar.
* ''VideoGame/TeamFortress2'':
** Pyro, [[AmbiguousGender whose gender is canonically unknown]], is widely presumed to be either female or, in some cases, nonbinary.
** And that the Pyro is still UsefulNotes/AbrahamLincoln using the third Life-Extender Machine hinted on the last page of Loose Canon (where the name was never shown). This has been {{Jossed}} by the Mann vs. Machine update, showing the third machine (Gray).
** Heavy/Medic is one of the more popular pairings due to some of the Heavy's lines in-game.
** Despite WordOfGod from {{Creator/Valve|Corporation}}, some fans continue to believe that the Medic is an ex-Nazi (which would make the above example very confusing). Others believe he's Jewish, [[AmbiguouslyJewish which has a bit more grounding in canon than the former]].
** A minor fanon is Scout's dogtags being a memento of his father or one of his brothers.
** The Engineer either cut off his hand and replaced it with the gunslinger when he found the blueprints (most likely given the description), or according to some fanon always had a robot hand and just hid it under his glove ([[YouHaveResearchedBreathing taking off his glove when he unlocks the item]]).
* ''Franchise/TouhouProject'':
** The character Keine, while originally only shown as a "protector of the human village" with some connection to history through her abilities, was almost always portrayed as a schoolteacher in doujinshi ([[AscendedFanon and then was confirmed as being a teacher in the second book]]). Not surprising, given the series' creator is extremely supportive of fan works of all types.
** Two nameless mini-boss type fights from ''The Embodiment of Scarlet Devil'' were later named after their fanon nicknames by ZUN: [[http://en.touhouwiki.net/wiki/Daiyousei Daiyousei]] (lit. "greater fairy") and [[http://en.touhouwiki.net/wiki/Koakuma Koakuma]] (lit. "little devil"). They haven't had any canon appearance since then but are used consistently as foils for related characters (Cirno and Patchouli, respectively) in fan-works.
** There has been fan art that actually separated canon and fanon Sakuya into two distinct personalities (Flowering Sakuya and Luna Dial Sakuya, respectively). This occasionally causes unwary fans to confuse Luna for the canon version.
* The gender of Kyros, the [[VillainWorld world-conquering]] EvilOverlord in ''VideoGame/{{Tyranny}}'', is pointedly left {{ambiguous|Gender}}, with different characters giving conflicting reports or making assumptions according to cultural norms of leadership. However, fans who don't go for GenderInclusiveWriting when discussing them usually assume they're female rather than male. [[WriterInducedFanon Especially given that the devs themselves typically prefer female pronouns.]]
* ''VideoGame/{{Ultima}}'': Ever since the reveal in ''VideoGame/UltimaVII'' that the [[VideoGame/WingCommander Kilrathi]] exist in the same universe as Britannia, many fans have speculated that the "TIE-Fighters" you fought in ''VideoGame/UltimaI'' were actually [[SpaceFighter Dralthi]].
* ''VideoGame/{{Warcraft}}'':
** The ''Warcraft'' setting of Creator/{{Blizzard|Entertainment}} fame has also been repeatedly subjected to fanon, and every game release (and now, every other patch release in the MMO ''VideoGame/WorldOfWarcraft'') was filled with wild speculation from fans -- speculation that would often evolve into fully written documents on the subject, carefully doctored images, and even their own [[http://www.wowpedia.org Wowpedia]] pages. Some of the least grounded and most fan-developed theories that took fire over the internet included naming the high elven gods (this has happened TWICE, despite many canon sources acknowledging that high elves follow the Holy Light, when they even care about religion), the new Alliance race in ''The Burning Crusade'' being night elf spirits possessing the bodies of demons, the second ''[=WoW=]'' expansion being focused around the Maelstrom with naga and pandaren as races (it proved to be ''Wrath of the Lich King'' instead). Blizzard forums also frequently [[FlameWar suffers hostile reactions from fans]] when the company [[{{Jossed}} fails to meet fanon expectations]] -- pretty much every patch, since the company has a history of surprising its players that predates ''[=WoW=]''.
** The fact that all night elves encountered in ''Warcraft III'' campaigns before the awakening of the druids are female has led the fans to assume that ''all'' night elven males were druids (save for a few who were demon hunters), and that ''all'' druids slept in the Emerald Dream for the entire duration of the Long Vigil (which was about seven thousand years). The former is implied but logistically awkward, while the latter is outright false.
** Perhaps the prime example of Fanon was the belief that the Forsaken were outright unable to use the Holy Light. Fans vehemently believed this was part of the games lore and was said to come from the RPG books when in truth the citation didn't even exist in the RPG. How much they deal with it is another matter: the starting zones hinted at a darker religion (the intro to which includes the line "the Holy Light no longer concerns you") that was spelled out in the non-canon RPG... but the point is that they can.
** Speaking of the Forsaken, many fans outright assumed that they were AlwaysChaoticEvil (and the game itself is pretty ambiguous on the issue). The same was assumed of the blood elves (especially during ''The Burning Crusade''). Even today, the topic of which races in the ''Warcraft'' setting are AlwaysChaoticEvil, and which are not, is a point of contention.
** A particularly persistent bit of Fanon is that [[{{Retcon}} if the Eredar weren't involved]], the [[LooksLikeOrlok Nathrezim]] must therefore have been solely responsible for [[BigBad Sargeras]]'s FaceHeelTurn. Although the Nathrezim were known to be involved, there were many other demon types there as well.
** Appendix III, a section of the old ''Warcraft'' Tabletop RPG on thinking up ideas for players to use [=DnD=] monsters in the Warcraft setting had fans believing Forlarren and leprechauns were canon to Azeroth for years!
** Another interesting bit of fanon is the Lich King's power. In canon, the Lich King has shown three major traits: TheChessmaster, a necromancer, powerful. Ask a ''Warcraft'' fan pre-''WOTLK'', and they would tell you the Lich King could one shot the Old Gods, Kil'jaeden, and probably the Titans themselves. His Fanon power was so legendary that the very thought that the players could even threaten his plans seemed like a sin against humanity. It's been guessed that by the end of the expansion, after Arthas spends much the war running and getting his strongest warriors killed, that Blizzard purposely made the Lich King fail so much was because the fans turned him into a god.
** Troll Voodoo is often misunderstood. Several players think the Darkspear no longer practice voodoo because of one of the troll greetings being "stay way from the voodoo", but actually they still do practice it. Vol'jin, leader of the darkspear, is amongst its most notable users. Some players think it is related to warlock magic when actually it is more connected to Shamanism and priests (the former having received Witch Doctor and Shadow Hunter spells such as Hex and healing wave from ''Warcraft III''). It is not evil either as often thought; instead it is more a neutral source of magic.
** The idea that draenei [[BizarreAlienBiology have two hearts]] has cropped up in several fanfics by different authors.
** The eredar spy [[http://www.wowpedia.org/Talgath Talgath]] has no official title. However, "Hand of the Deceiver" seems to have stuck so well that it was actually on his Wowpedia page for some time.
** An example was a doctored (and supposedly leaked) image of Duskbringer, Risen Champion of the Forsaken, who was believed to be a famous champion of light and good Uther the Lightbringer, who was risen as one of the Undead Forsaken. This didn't sit well with most fans and numerous lore reason was brought up as to why Uther should simply stay dead. In the end the image was a fake, but still a good example of Fanon coming into play.
** One bit of fanon that is often confused with canon: Deathwing attacking Stormwind to retrieve the severed heads of Nefarian and Onyxia. While it would explain how the two of them are [[UnexplainedRecovery suddenly back after being dead for several years]], this has never actually been stated in lore. In fact, no official explanation for the attack on Stormwind beyond "The beast is insane!" has ever been offered.
* From the ''VideoGame/WingCommander'' franchise:
** Thanks to one scene between Admiral Tolwyn and Col. Devereaux, in ''Wing Commander II'', it's widely believed by the fandom that the [[WaveMotionGun Phase Transit Cannon]] on the TCS ''Concordia'' has a tendency to blow up. All the actual scene says is that it's not safe to fire when at only 60% power, and that from a character known for being strictly "by the book", making it likely that Angel was thinking of technical documentation that errs on the side of caution.
** [[spoiler:Hobbes']] betrayal in ''Wing Commander III'' is often said to be because he didn't want [[spoiler:his homeworld]] blown up, but canonically he [[spoiler:was a sleeper agent for the Kilrathi]], established years prior to the third game. The video clip that explained this was present on the Platform/ThreeDOInteractiveMultiplayer and Platform/PlayStation ports of the game, but cut from the PC version due to space limitations of PC [=CDs=] at the time.
* ''VideoGame/TheWorldEndsWithYou'':
** It is commonly assumed that Rhyme's entry fee was her dreams/ambitions, although it was only implied. [[spoiler:It's also fairly agreed on that the main reason Shiki was in Eri's body for [[ExtendedGameplay Another Day]] was that the artists were too lazy to draw new sprites for her. Joshua [[LeaningOnTheFourthWall leans on the fourth wall]] in support of this theory.]]
** The concept of a "Music of Shibuya" shows up in nearly any fanfic that focuses on the roles of Composer and/or Conductor. The word actually never came up in the game. Neku is also often given a sketchbook and a talent for drawing, even though all we actually know of his art sensibility is that he likes CAT -- who is a tag artist, but also a designer and makes... ads about... stuff.
* ''VideoGame/XCOMEnemyUnknown'':
** The fandom loved to portray Vahlen's interrogations as a FateWorseThanDeath, up to meme levels. They also love to portray her (and XCOM's research division) as a ForScience borderline lunatic with little, if any, moral restraints. Then the Alien Hunters DLC of ''VideoGame/XCOM2'' essentially canonized the latter; Vahlen ''herself'' wishes the Commander had been around to stop her before she went too far and created the Alien Rulers, and her replacement Tygan thinks her research was extremely reckless.
** Fanfics, especially on Spacebattles, love to refer to TotalPartyKill missions as "Code Black", based on "Status Black" for a similar mission in the E3 2012 trailer.
* In ''VideoGame/{{Xenogears}}'', a FanTranslation of [[UniverseCompendium Perfect Works]] erroneously mentioned that Yui Uzuki, Citan's wife, beat him in a swordfight before they married. While this has since been debunked, it nonetheless makes Yui far more awesome (especially since Citan is otherwise TheAce), so the myth continues anyway.
