Due to language and adaptation barriers, nearly all popular anime is subject to {{fanon}} levels proportional to their age; ''Franchise/SailorMoon'' and ''Manga/RanmaOneHalf'' are two notable examples. The advent of the Internet has made fact-checking much easier. It has not, however, stopped flame wars about favored characters or plot lines based solely on fanon. Some tropes, such as Akane Tendo's (of ''Ranma ½'') supposed psychotic tendencies, have been so over-elaborated-upon by fans that they become psychotically defensive of their incorrect beliefs. On the other hand, cultural and literary differences on the very notion of what's "canon" means that there's considerable room for fanon to grow. A notable example would be ''Franchise/{{Gundam}}''.

----
* ''Manga/AttackOnTitan'':
** The famous opening line associated with this series: "On that day, humanity received a grim reminder", was ''never'' used in any official translations of the manga or the anime.[[note]]It was from an early FanSub of the anime. The official version is "That day, humanity remembered."[[/note]]
** Annie is assumed to have been friends with Mina during training, due to the two being shown to eat together and Annie apologizing in horror to what was presumed to be Mina's corpse after the Battle of Trost (though a visual novel would later reveal that the body was someone else).
** Bertolt is portrayed as a bookworm, due to him being introduced reading a book as well as to play up his role as [[TheSmartGuy Armin]]'s {{foil}}.
** 3D Maneuver Gear is believed to leave rope burn-like bruises on those who use it.
** Many fans believed that Levi was of French descent, due to early fan translations of the manga and anime translating his name as Rivaille. However, this has died out over time with the release of official translations. Since then, a more prominent Fanon has arisen in the form of people believing that Levi is of Jewish descent, due to his first name (as well as his last name, [[spoiler:Ackerman]]) being a Jewish name.
** Even prior to it being confirmed as canon, many assumed that Kenny and Levi's relationship was like that of a parent-child relationship.
** Prior to the anime establishing that he has blond hair, many assumed Galliard was a [[FieryRedhead redhead]], to fit his HotBlooded personality.
* ''Manga/AzumangaDaioh'': Even fluff anime isn't immune as this series has all sorts, ranging from ungiven names (Sakaki, Kagura, Kaori, and Chihiro all only have one name given) up to unrequited crushes (remember, only ''one'' is actually shown). Add generous desire for LesYay and stir:
** Two of the fanon names are Kaori '''Aida''' and Chihiro '''Inoue'''. This is based off a panel of the manga, where characters we see the back of the heads of are called these surnames and the backs of their heads ''kinda'' look like Kaori's and Chihiro's. Sakaki or Kagura don't have any commonly agreed-upon names, though, and it isn't even agreed if they're family names or given names. Occasionally, even the nameless background extras are given fan names, as is the case with Rachel Handlebars.
** A very common belief is that Osaka has forgotten her real name is Ayumu Kasuga. This was never actually seen in either manga or anime, instead being taken from the ''Tsunami Channel'' webcomic. In fact, at one point she freaks out upon discovering that she isn't listed on Miss Yukari's class roster, because she was looking for her birth name. Yukari put her down as "Osaka".
** Another common one is that Nyamo and Yukari are an item. Or, alternatively, that they ''were'' one. This appears to have most basis in the fact that [[HeterosexualLifePartners they are still single]] and that Nyamo still puts up with Yukari's [[{{Jerkass}} insults]] and [[SenseiChan childish behavior]]. More observant fans often cite Nyamo's drunken lecture about "adult relationships" and the [[NoodleIncident love letter]] Yukari teases her about; since it's later explained that they both attended an all-girls' school, it's easy to fill in the blanks.
* ''Manga/{{Bleach}}'': Ichigo's second Hollow form is generally referred to as a Vasto Lorde by the fandom due to its appearance, despite his form never being labeled as such in official media. Vasto Lorde is the ultimate stage of a Hollow's evolution, but Ichigo's Hollow form has a completely different origin that has nothing to do with Vasto Lordes, and we later see Tousen's Hollow form that looks nothing like a Vasto Lorde would look like and is too powerful to be any one of the lesser evolution stages. Like Ichigo's Hollow form, Tousen's Hollow form has never been labeled as any of the Hollow evolution stages and none of the fans even think of it as a Vasto Lorde, but story-wise and lore-wise, it functions exactly the same as Ichigo's Hollow form. The filler flashback of Harribel's past depicted her as a Vasto Lorde, but she was greatly outmatched against a mook Arrancer, and one of the databooks state that most of the Espada were once Vasto Lorde. If going by the latter, then Ichigo's and Tousen's Hollow forms are way beyond the power of the Vasto Lordes, and Hitsugaya has been greatly exaggerating their power level, and he would later be proven to an unreliable source of information again with the release of the ''Can't Fear Your Own World'' light novels.
* ''Manga/CaseClosed'': In canon, Conan occasionally orders iced coffee from restaurants. In fanon however, he's interpreted to be addicted to coffee, usually drinking it black.
* ''Manga/DGrayMan'':
** There is a common belief that once noah awaken they stop aging and are immortal. This is because Road Kamelot has kept her appearance for the last 35 years and fans assumed that this is the same for every noah. Actually, volume 24 reveals that Noahs DO ages, only slower than humans.
** A good amount of the fandom think that Road and Nea were lovers 35 years ago. This is because she seems to want to protect him and bear no hatred for him unlike the other Noah whom he killed.
** The hair color (and eye color) of the characters. Some consider that Lenalee's hair are green or purple. Kanda's are often believe to be blue or black. And let's not even start on the third exorcists. All this is because of the author's constantly changing the colors on the color spreads and because of the anime. Actually the only way to be sure is if there is any clear mention in the manga or declaration of the author herself. Lenalee's hair are actually stated to be black, Allen's and Wisely's to be white and Lavi to be red-haired and there is no mention regarding the other characters.
*** Noah's skin color are subjected to that as well for the exact same reasons. There are believed to be gray by some, brown by others or even black. There is actually no clear statement about it in the manga.
* ''Manga/DemonSlayerKimetsuNoYaiba'': the last manga volume was released in December 2020, Japan, and even after a 2nd Databook got released in 2021 some character backgrounds remained with some unexplained details, with that some fans assume certain things:
** The setting introduced the fact demons can use a system called Blood Battle Succession to challenge Twelve Kizuki members for their spot or become higher ranked, however, no demon is specifically stated to have made use of it, yet Doma was once the Upper-6 in the past, now he is the Upper-2; fans assume Doma actually challenged Akaza for the spot since Muzan created the Twelve Kizuki with Akaza as a member from the get go, making Upper-1 Kokushibo some company, adding to the fact Akaza had a huge grudge against Doma for being the Upper-2 despite he being older than the cult leader.
** Tanjiro's father, Tanjuro, actual cause of death is never revealed, it is just some unspecified illness that took him 1 year before the story began. As the series goes a certain power called Demon Slayer Mark is revealed, coupled with Tanjiro suspecting his father had a birth mark under his scar, it is later explained by Kokushibo who lived in the prime era of Marked slayers that [[spoiler:all Marked ones die once they reach 25 years of age, no exceptions beyond his borderline divine younger twin brother Yoriichi]]; Tanjuro's age during death is not revealed, but his very weakened appearance while still performing Breathing arts in Hinokami rituals could be the example of a dying [[spoiler:Marked person]].
** The series never gives an exact date to when the events in the story unfolds, just that it is set in the Taisho Period of Japanese history, which went from 1912 to 1926. However, by the time the anime covered the Red-Light District arc and added a detail that didn't exist in the manga, the fires in the fallout of the final Upper-6 battle, made some fans link that detail to the real historical event in Japan where the very same Yoshiwara Red-Light District caught fire in 1913 thus this could potentially give the series an exact date to exactly when the story takes place.
* ''Manga/ElfenLied'': On a great many fansites, Silpelit Number 3, who infected Kurama causing him to sire Mariko as a Diclonius and is supposed to be the older sister of Nana. There is no evidence for this. It appears to be a mistake one person made that was then lifted literally verbatim on each successive site.
* ''Manga/FushigiYuugi'': This has a couple of typical fanon elements that came up much more often in the high days of the fandom, but persist in the fanfic that still exists, despite most of it being Jossed by the addition of ''Genbu Kaiden'' and the novels published after the anime ended:
** Ashitare (if he's not dismissed entirely) is written as having a full human form that is as {{Bishonen}} as any other guy in the manga, but this doesn't happen often because Ashitare is mostly undeveloped as a character.
** Tomo and Soi are assumed to hate each other and are love rivals over Nakago; they're not, and they don't. They actually work very well together the one time they're shown doing so. If they aren't written as hating each other, they're usually friends instead, having bonded over having been sexually abused as children (canon in her case, fanon in his). In the same vein, Tomo's real name is usually given as Ruo or Ryo Chuin; the novels name him Ragun.
** Before ''Genbu Kaiden'', Uruki of the Genbu Seishi was usually written as a woman in fanfic because of the star Uruki is represented by. Hilariously, Uruki is a man... who [[GenderBender must change into a woman]] to use his wind powers.
** Whether Nuriko was in love with Miaka romantically or loved her platonically was a subject of fierce debate; the answer depends on whether you're a YaoiFangirl or not.
** Mitsukake (if he's mentioned at all) is sometimes written as having been a military doctor, usually leading to him [[TakeALevelInBadAss getting a power upgrade]]. The rest of the time he's a pacifist with [[WhatKindOfLamePowerIsHeartAnyway lame healey-bubbleys]], which conveniently forgets that his healing powers also exorcise demons.
** Hikitsu and Tomite were often written as brothers.
** Tasuki doesn't like women because of his four older sisters always giving him a hard time, fanfics usually write him as being gay, even if they're not yaoi fics. Not helped by Creator/YuuWatase giving a WordOfGay in regards to him. [[TeasingCreator LOL]].
* ''Anime/GunXSword'': Though, these fans are divided as to which member of his harem would have been best for Van, most of the existing romantic fanfics pair him off with Wendy [[spoiler: especially the continuation fics that are set after the show's MaybeEverAfter ending, when a Van X Wendy relationship wouldn't be lolicon]]. Interestingly, several different pieces of continuation fic also assume that [[spoiler: Wendy]] works in a hotel or restaurant after the end of the series, despite there being no direct evidence of this in DistantFinale.
* ''Manga/{{Guyver}}'': In this fandom, it's generally accepted that Edward Caerleon, late of the [[TheOmniscientCouncilOfVagueness Zoalord Council]], is Welsh.
* ''Manga/JoJosBizarreAdventure'':
** While characters wearing lipstick would become common from ''Manga/StoneOcean'' onward, many fans portray characters from prior Parts as wearing lipstick as well.
** Even fans who don't take part in shipping generally seem to agree that Joseph is bisexual, likely stemming from his [[HoYay interactions with Caesar]].
** While most [[FightingSpirit Stands]] are portrayed in series as mindless, fans like to give certain ones their own personalities, such as giving Killer Queen the personality of an actual cat. Another common Fanon involving Stands is to portray them as reincarnations of dead characters, the most popular being the idea that Star Platinum is the reincarnation of [[spoiler:Jonathan]] and Hermit Purple being the reincarnation of [[spoiler:Caesar]].
** Due to the tendency for Stand Users to survive what should be lethal wounds, it's a common belief that gaining a Stand makes a person inherently stronger and tougher than the average human. This has no real basis in canon, as most of the time, the Stand User surviving lethal wounds tend to have to do more with strategy and determination over raw strength. Similarly, a common belief is that having a Stand makes a person smarter, which does have some basis in canon via animal and baby Stand Users, both of which have shown intelligence far greater than they should have.
** Jotaro is believed to be a fan of Creator/ClintEastwood, due to WordOfGod stating that Jotaro was heavily based on the characters played by the actor.
** More comedic fan works portray Star Platinum as being able to [[PokemonSpeak only speak in ORAs]].
** Comedic fan works like to portray the idea of DIO being a BumblingDad to Giorno and a SitcomArchnemesis to Jotaro and Jolyne.
** A surprisingly popular theory among fans is that Hol Horse is Mista's father. This likely stems from both having Stands that allow them to control the direction of their guns' bullets (as well as both having the tendency to end up getting hit by their own bullets), as well as Hol Horse's mercenary occupation and status as TheCasanova who claims to have "girlfriends all over the world" making it entirely possible that he's been to Italy. The fact that Mista was born in 1982 and Hol Horse appears to be in his late 20s or early 30s in 1989 means that the timeline matches up as well.
** A common explanation among fans as to why Kira gained Bites the Dust instead of a [[spoiler:Requiem Stand]] when he was stabbed by a Stand Arrow is that when the Stand User them self is stabbed by an Arrow, their Stand will gain a new ability, while when the Stand itself is stabbed, it becomes a [[spoiler:Requiem Stand]].
** There's a rather popular belief among fans that Cioccolata is Gwess' father, due to both wearing green outfits, having AxCrazy personalities, owning {{Human Pet}}s, and both having "Good, good, good, good..." as a {{Catchphrase}}. The fact that Gwess would have been 12 during the events of ''Golden Wind'' also helps make this idea more plausible.
** While the results vary by fan, those that enjoyed the spin-off ''Manga/JoJosBizarreAdventureCrazyDiamondsDemonicHeartbreak'' tend to invoke the elements into the [=JoJo=] canon, such as Josuke and Hol Horse's team up or Kakyoin coming from Morioh.
** ''Manga/StardustCrusaders'':
*** To what extent Jotaro's father Sadao was involved in his life growing up is never elaborated on, but the fact that he's away at the time of the Part's events, as well as Jotaro's attitude regarding him, leads many to believe that he's was absent for most of Jotaro's life. Then again, it's still left vague enough that some can think that him being away is an exception to the Kujo's usual home life.
*** While Kakyoin's comment about wanting to marry someone like Holly was more likely meant to refer to her NiceGirl personality, pretty much the entire fandom decided to take it a completely different direction and instead portray Kakyoin as a [[LikesOlderWomen MILF-hunter]]. Kakyoin is also commonly portrayed as being romantically interested in Jotaro, despite the two [[ShipsThatPassInTheNight interacting very little during their time seen together]].
*** Fan works involving Kakyoin's parents often portray Kakyoin's mother as the one who Kakyoin inherited his red hair from.
*** Because Joseph's Hermit Purple and a Stand WordOfGod confirmed to be Jonathan's Stand look identical, many believe that they are the Stand of [[PowerOfTheSun Hamon]] Users.
*** DIO's henchmen (especially Hol Horse, Midler, and the Egypt 9 Glory Gods) are often portrayed as friends during their downtime.
*** Because Josuke was able to manifest Crazy Diamond after recovering from his illness after the events of the Part, many believe that Holly was able to manifest her Stand as well.
** ''Manga/DiamondIsUnbreakable'':
*** Fan works often have Josuke [[LikeFatherLikeSon take traits from Joseph]], such as having him use Joseph's "Your next line is..." line or [[StrongFamilyResemblance having his hair resemble Part 2 Joseph's when it isn't in its pompadour]].
*** A common theory is that Shizuka's mother was one of Kira's victims, and that she awakened her Stand out of instinct to protect herself.
*** There's a popular idea among fans that Josuke grew up to become a police officer, both in honor of his late grandfather as well as to give him a more legitimate way to protect Morioh. Some fan art for this idea also involve Josuke's police hat being unable to fit on his head due to his pompadour.
** ''Manga/GoldenWind'':
*** Depictions of Giorno as a child generally give him the hairstyle he's seen with during the events of the story, despite the fact that narration states that Giorno didn't gain this hairstyle until he was a teenager.
*** Giorno is often depicted in fan art as having scars on back, stemming from his [[AbusiveParents stepfather beating him]] as a child.
*** Abbacchio is sometimes portrayed as having a soft spot for Narancia, often as a counter for his [[DislikesTheNewGuy hatred for Giorno]].
*** A lot of fan art for Abbacchio portrays him as wearing black nail polish.
*** Abbacchio and Risotto are believed to have an InterserviceRivalry due to the similarities between the two.
*** Fan works focusing on La Squadra usually portray the group as having a family-esque bond, with Risotto in particular being portrayed as a TeamDad and Prosciutto as a TeamMom.
*** Because he's introduced with a cat, Formaggio is often portrayed as a KindheartedCatLover.
*** Prosciutto is believed to be a chain smoker, due to his Stand having a gas based ability.
*** Ghiaccio and Melone are often portrayed as being VitriolicBestBuds with a RedOniBlueOni dynamic, an idea that is somewhat shown off in anime's extended flashback of La Squadra's backstory. Some fans also like to joke that the reason Melone's {{catchphrase}} is the grammatically-incorrect [[GratuitousItalian "Di molto!"]] is because he's intentionally trying to piss [[GrammarNazi Ghiaccio]] off.
*** Melone is often portrayed as a LovableSexManiac. The fact that he has a pleased reaction to a woman slapping him also leads people to believe he's a sadomasochist.
*** Because Sorbet and Gelato were [[PosthumousCharacter killed off prior to the events of the Part]], fans like to fill in their personalities and relationship with the other La Squadra members. Most commonly, the two are portrayed as having non-combat based Stands, Sorbet is portrayed as a knife-wielder while Gelato uses firearms.
*** While the canon ages of the members of La Squadra besides Risotto are ever revealed, a vague interpretation among fans is that Prosciutto, Sorbet, and Gelato are among the older side of the group, Pesci and Ghiaccio are on the younger side, and Formaggio, Illuso, and Melone fall somewhere in-between.
*** Some members of Passione are occasionally portrayed as being related, such as Risotto and Polpo (due to both having distinctive [[BlackEyesOfEvil black eyes with red sclera]]) and Squalo and Sale (due to both having spiky orange hair).
*** While Secco's appearance while not wearing Oasis is never shown, fan art tends to portray him as having messy blue hair, similar to the stitches on Oasis' eyeholes.
*** In order to explain away why Giorno didn't gain [[spoiler:Gold Experience Requiem]] when Black Sabbath stabbed Gold Experience with a Stand Arrow, it's believed that only the Beetle Arrow grants [[spoiler:Requiem Stands]]. Though this doesn't exactly hold water due to the fact that all of the Stand Arrows were made from the same meteorite. Another common explanation is that the arrows will only grant [[spoiler:Requiem Stands]] to those they consider "worthy", which does have some basis in the story.
*** Fanfic taking place after the events of the Part regularly portray [[spoiler:Polnareff]] as a ParentalSubstitute for Giorno, as well as him being the one to tell Giorno about [[spoiler:DIO and his actions, leading Giorno to disown DIO as his father]]. The fact that ''Literature/PurpleHazeFeedback'' reveals that [[spoiler:Polnareff became the Giorno's NumberTwo after he took over Passione]] helps support this belief.
** ''Manga/StoneOcean'':
*** Jotaro is believed to have met his wife in college, and that she is a fellow marine biologist. Fan works that give her a name tend to also follow the series' MusicalThemeNaming by naming her either [[Music/DollyParton Dolly]] (since Jolyne is named after a Dolly Parton song) or [[Music/MarinaDiamandis Marina]] (as a [[PunnyName pun]] on her husband's love of the ocean).
*** The only hint regarding Pucci's ancestry is that his great-grandmother is from Venice. A lot of fans like to interpret Pucci as being of Sicilian descent, usually as a way to explain why he has noticeably darker skin compared to the rest of his family. The anime adaptation giving his father dark skin helps support this idea. On a similar note, the fact that [[spoiler:the racist private detective Pucci hires doesn't seem to take issue with Pucci's dark skin appearance is usually explained away by the idea that Pucci's wealth and his status as both a priest and a respected member of their community means that he's far too risky of a person to take action against]].
*** Fanfics taking place before the Part often portray Weather Report as a father figure to Emporio.
*** Because Jolyne is at one point seen reading a comic with a similar art style to Thoth, many believe that Boingo grew up to become an illustrator after the events of ''Stardust Crusaders''.
*** Due to his [[MemeticMutation memetically popular]] outburst as the beginning of the manga's version of the Bohemian Rhapsody arc, Anasui is often portrayed by fans as a Creator/{{Disney}} fan.
*** Fanfics that give the Sons of DIO happier endings tend to portray Ungalo as having been a comic book fan growing up, and would eventually become a successful visual artist.
*** Many like to assume that [[spoiler:Jotaro's reincarnation in the new universe is named Qtaro]], as a reference to the SueDonym he uses in ''Stardust Crusaders''.
*** A common belief among fans is that after the Part's end, [[spoiler:Irene and Anakiss end up adopting Emporio]].
** ''Manga/SteelBallRun'':
*** While WordOfGod has stated that [[AlternateUniverse the universe]] this Part takes place in is a completely different universe to the one [[spoiler:created at the end of ''Stone Ocean'']], many fans like to believe it is, likely due to the number of characters who are counterparts to characters in the previous Parts.
*** Mountain Tim being the AlternateUniverse counterpart to Speedwagon is a common theory, as while a Speedwagon is mentioned to be a sponsor for the Steel Ball Run, Tim's facial scar and one-sided crush on Lucy both bring Speedwagon to mind.
*** While the species of dinosaur of Diego's [[RaptorAttack Scary Monsters]] [[ScaledUp form]] is never established in canon, the fandom seems to universally agree that it's a ''Utahraptor''.
*** For some reason, the general agreement for the tune of Gyro's Pizza Mozzarella song is that of "[[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1hbHgZDB95o Fun Fun Fun Dayo]]" from the ''Manga/LuckyStar'' soundtrack.
*** A theory among a lot of fans is that Soundman is actually an AlternateUniverse version of Sandman, rather than the exact same person, who was brought into the main universe by Valentine, then [[KillAndReplace killed Sandman and took his place]]. This theory largely stems from [[EarlyInstallmentWeirdness the notable difference between how his Stand works in his introduction and how it works later]], his extreme personality shift, and the idea that this would serve as {{foreshadowing}} for [[spoiler:the alternate universe Diego that shows up at the end of the Part]].
** In ''[[Manga/JoJosBizarreAdventureTheJOJOLands The JOJOLands]]'', since it's established that Dragona was jamming out to Music/DuaLipa just prior to their introduction, a lot of fans have latched on to the idea that the specific song they were listening to was "One Kiss".
* The [[BigScrewedUpFamily Zabi family]] from ''Anime/MobileSuitGundam'' are a veritable fanon magnet, as they get very little characterization in the series proper. Popular theories include:
** Degwin being of Italian descent and making his fortune mining raw materials for the space colonies on the Moon (though it is canon that Degwin lived on the Moon before Side 3 (the future Zeon) was completed);
** Gihren's estranged wife being a member of Danish royalty (though the thing about him cheating on her with his assistant Cecilia is canon, at least according to the novel) and being fond of cats;
** Saslo (the guy who was blown up with a carbomb by Ramba Ral's dad a few years before the series takes place) being homosexual;
** Dozle's love of sports & dogs;
** Kycilia having a sexual relationship with Char sometime in the past (though she does have some kind of relationship with his lookalike Johnny Ridden in at least one {{Gaiden}} manga);
** Garma's various health problems, drug use, musical talent & his mother dying in childbirth ([[AllThereInTheManual canon sources]] mention her dying shortly after he was born, but never specify how).
** Another very common fanon theory is the illness MadScientist Ginius Sakhalin from ''08th MS Team'' suffers from is [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hepatolenticular_degeneration Wilson's Disease]]. Though its name is never mentioned, the symptoms do seem to fit.
** ''Anime/MobileSuitGundamWing'' has The Great Trowa Barton Rape Debate, where some fans try to explain Trowa's {{Stoic}} nature by saying that the mercenary group who took him in in the prequel manga ''Episode Zero'' also used him [[SituationalSexuality to vent their pent-up "frustrations"]]. The manga doesn't really hint at this at all; in fact, Trowa was shown to be emotionally stunted ''before'' he met the mercs, since [[WildChild he spent the first few years of his life without human contact]].
** ''Anime/MobileSuitZetaGundam'' has fans speculating that Paptimus has hypnotic powers over women to explain how he convinced [[spoiler: Reccoa to not only switch sides but be willing to take part in genocide]]. While it's far less misogynistic than what Paptimus suggests (that being that [[spoiler: Reccoa was just tired of not being seen as a woman by Char]]) it's never stated or even really hinted at.
** A very popular interpretation from ''Anime/MobileSuitGundamZZ'' is that [[spoiler: Glemmy wasn't Gihren's clone like he claimed to be, but his ''[[BastardBastard illegitimate son]]'']], and [[spoiler: the clone thing]] was just a cover story to help deal with his traumatic life.
* Due to its many disparate continuities, ''Franchise/{{Zoids}}'' has a fair bit of fanon:
** Bit Cloud and Vega Obscura from ''New Century'' are descended from Van Flyheight and Joyce "Raven" Chen from ''Chaotic Century/Guardian Force'' respectively.
*** In fact, just about any NC character is claimed to be descended from any ''CC/GF'' character. Given that there is a thousand years between the series, this is possible.
** Similarly, it is believed that the "Organoid Systems" inside the Liger Zero and Beserk Fury (stated in canon to simply be self-sufficient artificial intelligence programs) are literal organoids; more to the point, they are generally believed to be Zeke and Shadow, respectively. Often tied into this theory is the idea that the Liger Zero and Berserk Fury evolved from Van's Blade Liger and Raven's Geno Breaker.
*** Likewise, it has often been claimed that Leon's red Blade Liger was created by the Organoid Ambient
** Lieutenant/Captain O'Connell from the ''Chaotic Century'' and ''Guardian Force'' has no given first name, but a slash fanficcer dubbed him Jake and now many fans believe that to be his official name.
** Any attempt to explain Hiltz' master plan from ''Guardian Force'' will inevitably involve fanon speculation, given both the nonsense plan and Hiltz' acute lack of personality.
* ''Anime/HaibaneRenmei'':
** ''Fanfic/MadoOfStoneMill'' fills in many side-plots that make Glie seem all the more multifaceted and interesting, and is so well-written in OriginalFlavor that many people consider it up there with the canon.
** WordOfGod is that Haibane ''are not'' angels. However, the series contains so much heavenly imagery, and the MindScrew final episode suggests that [[spoiler:Reki [[DrivenToSuicide killed herself]] in her past life]], so fans don't believe that (or alternatively they're not angels ''yet''). The series is seen by almost all fans as taking place in purgatory. The Haibane died and are waiting to either reincarnate or be sent to heaven. The circumstances of their deaths, however, vary between fans. The most popular two theories are that the characters either all died of suicide or that their dreams suggest how they died (Reki [[spoiler:let herself be ran over by a train]], Rakka either died by falling accidentally or killed herself, Kuu died in an airplane accident, Nemu died in her sleep, etc).
* ''Franchise/YuGiOh'' has a ''very'' vast fanon:
** The biggest one is the usage of the terms "yami" and "hikari". They refer to the three characters who share their bodies with other beings. Mutou Yuugi is the hikari, the Pharaoh is the yami. Bakura Ryou is the hikari, the spirit of the Ring is the yami. Malik Ishtar is the hikari, his dangerous separate personality is the yami.
*** Even though it's never been officially confirmed, most fans take it for granted that Yugi is the reincarnation of the Pharoah/Yami Yugi. To explain how they can coexist in the same body, the claim is that Yugi is the reincarnation of the "light" half of the Pharoah's soul, and Yami Yugi is the "dark" half, which was sealed in the Millennium Puzzle. The same claim is made for Bakura and the Spirit of the Ring. Hence the usage of "hikari" and "yami" above.
** Another one is the name of the spirit in the Ring. His form in Ancient Egypt is never given a name besides "Bakura", but somehow, people have christened him, "Afekia". This misnomer is easily explainable, as it appears to have come from a fan who misheard one of Bakura's lines in the English dub (when Yami asks who 'Bakura' really is in episode 79 of the Duel Monsters arc, and he replies "I am a thief, and a stealer of souls.") and took it as "I am 'Akefia', stealer of souls." But to many other ''Franchise/YuGiOh'' fanfiction writers, Akefia just sounds awesome and Eygptian-y.
** Also, for fanfics in the past, many people tend to turn Yuugi into a character in Ancient Egypt, then give him the name "Heba" or "Haba", which is apparently Arabic for "game".
** The relationship between the spirit of the Ring and his host body, Bakura Ryou (in fanon the spirit takes the name Bakura or Yami Bakura and the host takes the name Ryou), is grossly exaggerated in many ways, the most prominent of which is the spirit being heavily abusive and Bakura being weak and frightful of him. First off, Bakura is hardly even aware of the fact that the spirit is there, considering him as more of a voice in his head. Secondly, the spirit can't form his own solid body, so if he were to abuse Bakura, he would have to damage his own host body, which doesn't serve him in any way, so he'd never do it. The spirit ''does'' injure Bakura's body in the manga, but only to stop Bakura from interfering with the spirit's attempt to gain the Millennium Puzzle.
** In the fandom, Jonouchi and Shizuka's father will always be portrayed as abusive. This is hinted at in the manga, but never confirmed. [[note]]To be fair, he ''does'' [[GrievousBottleyHarm throw a beer bottle at Yugi, Honda, and Anzu]] while mistaking them for Jonouchi after they arrive at his house in one chapter of the manga, so it's rather hard to interpret the man as not abusive.[[/note]]
** It's generally accepted among fans that Kaiba, in spite of his abrasive personality, is in actuality a harsh-but-fair BenevolentBoss as well as being an HonestCorporateExecutive, with both often being contributing factors to Kaiba Corp's meteoric rise in power and influence. This is supported by the fact that Kaiba's employees still stood by him even when he lost the company to Pegasus, as well as the fact that the cutting-edge Duel technology displayed in 5Ds is still backwards-compatible with the now-ancient Battle City Duel Disk.
* Like Manga/{{Naruto}} and the Kyuubi, Kurama from ''Manga/YuYuHakusho'' is believed to be in constant telepathic communication with "Youko", his demon self. Futhermore, "Youko" is very bored with being stuck inside a 15-year-old virgin and would very much like it to be sexy tiems nao. This one you can blame on the dub: the very first time Kurama transforms back, Youko Kurama's voice tells him "it's up to you now", and calls him Suichi, his dub human name; he answers back in his normal voice. In the Japanese version, Youko Kurama's voice begins the line, and normal-Kurama's voice finishes it as he transforms, implying one consciousness. Also, "Jaganshi" and "Youko" are thought to be Hiei and Kurama's names -- they're technically titles, referring to what type of {{youkai}} they are, and the word "Jaganshi" ("Evil Eye Master") is only used in one episode title.
* Francine is one of the few main characters in the English dub of ''Anime/SamuraiPizzaCats'' who is not explicitly given a surname. Daniel Kary, webmaster of one of the [[FandomVIP better-known]] SPC fan sites, began referring to her as "Francine Manx" sometime in the 1990s, apparently on a whim; the name stuck, and now appears on virtually every web site associated with the series, including the Internet Movie Database.
* Thanks to an EyeCatch from the third season of ''{{Literature/Slayers}}'', just about every fanfic writer believes that Luna Inverse and The Beast Master, one of the five Dark Lords under Ruby Eyed Shabranigdo, are best friends. This seems to stem mostly from a mixture of the manga (which revealed that the werewolf/troll crossbreed Dilgear did, indeed, heal from his fatal wounds and ended up becoming Luna's pet) not being very available and Luna's willingness to [[GoodIsNotNice pass off saving the world and claim she was too busy being a part-time waitress]], instead insisting that they approach her... [[ChaoticNeutral "unpredictable"]] little sister instead. This is despite Luna being known to carry the soul of the chief ''god'' of their world within her, essentially making her a Paladin of such power she can kill a dragon with a kitchen knife and a natural enemy to all Mazoku.
* ''Manga/NegimaMagisterNegiMagi'' has several bits of Fanon. One piece that eventually was confirmed as canon is the idea that Asuna is BookDumb because a LaserGuidedAmnesia spell that was used on her in the past interferes with her ability to learn.
* It's a commonly known fact that the protagonists of ''VisualNovel/{{Tsukihime}}'' and ''Literature/TheGardenOfSinners'', Tohno Shiki and Ryougi Shiki respectively, both of whom can see the "predetermined death of all things" can only see the deaths of those with a "Gaian concept of death". Except this isn't fact; it's a theory created by English-speaking fans based off something written in the side materials: Specifically, that neither of the Shikis can kill ORT, the Ultimate One from the planet Mercury (otherwise known as TYPE-MERCURY). The reason that neither of the Shikis can kill ORT is because it literally does not have a "death", at least not one that either of the Shikis can recognize. According to Word of God, TYPES like ORT cannot be killed, even if you eliminate their physical bodies, as they don't have a concept of life or death to begin with. Fandom has run away with this, claiming that the reason neither of the Shikis can kill ORT is because it is not from Earth.
** It seems more like Ultimate Ones [[YouCannotGraspTheTrueForm exist in a manner humans are incapable of understanding]], which is why the Mystic Eyes of Death Perception don't work; you can't perceive their death if their death is by nature impossible for humans to perceive. Of course, this suggests that ''any'' being with a concept of death that humans can't understand would be immune to the Mystic Eyes of Death Perception.
** Loosely related to this is the "fact" that neither Shikis are capable of killing Servants, mainly for the same reasons. Because they are "already dead", they cannot be killed again. Much of this is also based on Word of God; according to the creator Nasu Kinoko, neither Shikis would be a match against Servants. However, Nasu has explicitly failed to comment specifically on whether the Shikis would actually be able to KILL Servants, resulting in massive migraine-inducing power-level arguments.
* There is no Dr. Hikari in ''Manga/LoveHina''. The character was created by a fairly popular fanfic writer and has led some to believe that such a character actually exists in canon.
* The ''Anime/TigerAndBunny'' fandom has concluded that [[ShowWithinAShow HeroTV]] has a forum filled with dirty fanfic... that some of the heroes (mostly [[{{Otaku}} Ivan/Origami Cyclone]]) participate in writing.
* ''Anime/PaniPoniDash'' may not have one big fanbase like other examples, but if [[http://www.twitter.com/KurumiMomose Kurumi Momose]] and [[http://www.twitter.com.6SayakaSuzuki Sayaka "#6" Suzuki]] are married to each other accourding to their Twitter pages, some people definately must have been quite dedicated on this. It hasn't spreaded through many more fans yet, but it's likely they might get quite some attention.
* ''Manga/FairyTail'':
** For whatever reason the general consensus amongst fans is that Sting, who is himself blond, would refer to Lucy as blondie. Since he calls her "Lucy-san" in the only scene in which he speaks with her thus far, there is no basis for this.
** Another piece of {{Fanon}} in the fandom is that Dragon Slayers are all {{Yandere}}. There's also the terms of "mates" as if they were.
** People agree that Lucy's mother died on July 7th, X777, the same date as the dragons' disappearance, despite only the year that she passed away having been shown. [[spoiler:The manga eventually revealed that this date was when she fell deathly ill, but it wasn't for a few days later that she died]].
** It's assumed by the pirating crowd that Natsu and likely Gajeel are over 400 years old. Even if they were seen as children, they couldn't pass through a barrier stopping people over 80, their ages are listed as unknown, and the 400-year-old Zeref recognized Natsu, so the theory is well supported. The only flaw, as anyone who actually buys the volumes might know, is that Mashima stated in a Q&A section that this is not the case. [[spoiler:The manga later confirms it's because the two were unknowing hosts for their dragon parents, who are presumably much older than 80.]]
* ''Manga/MagicKnightRayearth'':
** Fuu is often described as being a ShrinkingViolet or a wallflower because she's TheSmartGirl, [[{{Meganekko}} wears glasses]], and is an avid fan of [=RPGs=]. This despite the fact that she ''never demonstrates any kind of shyness or timidity''. The closest thing to it is her excessive politeness, but she's never afraid to, for example, go up to a stranger with a small gift[[note]]how she met Hikaru in the first place[[/note]] or politely-yet-firmly tell a bratty princess that she won their contest and she's going to escape now, thanks.
** Hikaru's family is assumed to be much less affluent than Umi's and Fuu's, as they both attend elite private schools and Hikaru goes to a public school. However, while the Hououjis and Ryuuzakis both live in ''huge'' houses, the Shidou residence is a very sizable and well-respected kendo school, so they're clearly not poor.
*** Some fans from Latin America think that the Pillar of Cephiro can [[AlwaysFemale only be a woman]] as Eagle is depicted as female in the Spanish dub.
* ''Manga/MaisonIkkoku'': Yotsuya is actually a character named Tadayasu Sekoi from a short SpyFiction manga series Takahashi wrote called ''Wasted Minds''. The characters look and act almost identically, and [[ObliquelyObfuscatedOccupation neither the audience nor the other Maison Ikkoku characters ever learn what Yotsuya's day job is]]. It makes sense that Sekoi, who works as TheHandler for two secret agents, would want to keep his occupation secret from his neighbors.
* ''Literature/MariaWatchesOverUs'':
** It's not uncommon for fans to give Yuki and Suguru a relationship similar to Yumi and Sachiko, be it romantic or just really close and platonic.
** CastFullOfGay, no ifs, ands, or buts. Sometimes Eriko gets pinned as bisexual but the rest of the main girls are lesbian.
** Yumi and Yuki are frequently mistaken for {{Half Identical Twin}}s. They were born in the same year but months apart.
* Mashiro from ''Literature/ThePetGirlOfSakurasou'' is never stated to have any sort of neurological or mental disorders, but amongst at least western fans she's considered to be on the autism spectrum.
* ''Anime/GirlsUndPanzer'':
** The supplementary material stating that men were forbidden from entering Tankery has been interpreted by many fans to mean that men were forbidden to pilot tanks at all, even in war. This has led to lengthy debates about how to reconcile it with the fact that male tankers are depicted in canon and historically male tank commanders (with unequivocally male names) are explicitly mentioned.
** Darjeeling and Orange Pekoe are sometimes assumed to be sisters, and Assam is sometimes assumed to be their sister as well, even though Orange Pekoe refers to them as "Darjeeling-sama" and "Assam-sama" rather than using UsefulNotes/JapaneseSiblingTerminology.
** Another common piece of fanon is that Shiho Nishizumi is not only head of the Nishizumi school, but also headmistress of Kuromorimine, the school where her elder daughter commands, and where her younger daughter used to attend, despite this not being said at any point. The Maginot manga confirms that she's a graduate of that school, but says nothing about her current job.
* Fans of ''Manga/NoMatterHowILookAtItItsYouGuysFaultImNotPopular'' typically view Tomoko as having some sort of mental issue such as Social Anxiety Disorder, Avoidant Personality Disorder, or Depression. There's also a consensus she might be on the autism spectrum as well.
* In ''Anime/MyOtome'' fanfiction, the Aries Republic government building is commonly called "the Hexagon", as its design is a clear reference to the real-life Pentagon that houses the US Department of Defense, but with six sides.
* ''Anime/SmilePrettyCure'' had a popular theory early on as the characters were introduced: someone mistook a certain set of katakana within Akane Hino's character description to read "{{ballet}}", and the theory took hold for a while before someone discovered the correct translation was "volleyball", the katakana for which looks remarkably similar.
* ''Manga/HunterXHunter'': Many fans of the 1999 anime insist that Kurapika is female, usually a SweetPollyOliver, despite the manga having him as [[DudeLooksLikeALady an androgynous boy]]. The 1999 version differs from the manga, so fanon goes with this being another adaptation change.
* Suna as an (often [[CelibateHero aromantic]]) UsefulNotes/{{asexual|ity}} is a frequent headcanon in the ''Manga/MyLoveStory'' fandom.
* In just about every ''Literature/SoundEuphonium'' fanfic, Kumiko is lesbian and Reina is bisexual. The two have a PseudoRomanticFriendship filled with heavy HomoeroticSubtext, but it never goes anywhere. In the original book, Kumiko has a male love interest but all romance between the two were written-out of the anime (instead it became unrequited). Reina is [[TeacherStudentRomance in love with her music teacher]], which is why fans see her as bisexual rather than lesbian. Yuuko and Natsuki are also pinned as gay (and are almost always shipped together)
* ''Manga/SaintSeiya'':
** Some pre-Sainthood "real names" for the main cast have been popping up in fics, particularly the last name "Amamiya" for Ikki and Shun. This in spite of the fact that only their constellation-based Saint titles have ever been used in the series proper.
** The idea of Mitsumasa Kido being Zeus, who would have appeared in the manga's final arc had it not been cancelled, is very popular in Latin American and European fandom. This comes from Kido being Saori/Athena's adoptive father (and the biological father of all the Bronze Saints in the manga, which is typical of the mythological Zeus) and how one of his posthumous appearances is accompanied by lightning.
* The fact that Akane from ''Anime/PsychoPass'' doesn't have her Hue clouded easily led many fans to believe that she's confirmed to be criminally asymptomatic despite the anime itself not once stating that it's the case.
* ''Anime/BakutenShootBeyblade'': The genders of bit-beasts. Dragoon is the only confirmed male due to being the only one with voiced lines. It's common for people to assume that almost all bit-beasts are male due to the English dub using male pronouns for all of them. In the original Japanese track they are all referred to with gender-neutral pronouns, so they're really a case of AmbiguousGender (if they're not NoBiologicalSex). The ones that are popularly singled out as female are Dranzer, Galux and Wolborg. Galux and Wolborg ARE implied, but not confirmed, to be female in the anime. Dranzer has no such implication, but it remains popular to think of it as female.
* ''Anime/OsomatsuSan'':
** The suicidal woman that Jyushimatsu fell for in episode 9 is nicknamed "Homura" by fans (a pun on "home run"). It's believed that she has scars on her wrist either from a previous suicide attempt or self-harm. It's also believed she is an ex-adult movie actress who is depressed over her her past, which is implied but never confirmed in the episode. The usual backstory is that she moved from her small-town to the city and a hard time making a living. She was coherenced into becoming a porn star but hated it.
** Ichimatsu as depressed and suicidal. He also cuts himself.
* ''Anime/TheVisionOfEscaflowne'':
** Allen was Marlene's personal guard. It is a logical conclusion given the information in the series, but it is never outright stated. Aerika S' Eries trilogy probably influenced many a fan. Google Translations of Newtype Novel #4 chapter 1 state that Allen is a generic palace guard.
** Varie, being a Draconian, may age slower than a normal human.
** Van and Folken being the very last Draconians, due to their race being hunted to extinction.
** Hitomi having some Atlantean blood in her due to her ability to see the future and use the pendant to dose.
** The trip the Astons took to visit Fanelia that Millerna remembers in episode 6 was to possibly arrange a marriage between one of the Asturian princesses and one of the Fanelian princes.
