''[[http://www.fanfiction.net/s/268030/1/Urusei_Yatsura_The_Senior_Year Urusei Yatsura: The Senior Year]]'' by Fred Herriot and Mike Smith (some mature themes and homosexuality).
* Recommended by {{Robbie}}, seconded by {{GenkiGirl}}
* ''Status'': Complete
* ''Synopsis'': Starting from where the end of the manga left off, a series of events causes Ataru to leave Tomobiki to wrest control of his life: actions that hold certain consequences for the rest of the Tomobiki gang to deal with, especially Lum...
* ''Comments'': Possibly one of the best known ''Urusei Yatsura'' fanfics out there, this epic story spans about 50 chapters split into seven books (and that's not even including the side chapters and sequels!), and carries a scope that rivals your average [[Fanfic/UndocumentedFeatures Eyrie Production]]. The series has also been cited as controversial for a couple of reasons: a large amount of gay characters, and the treatment and characterisation of the canon characters. This troper doesn't recommend this fanfic because he enjoys it, but because it's such a large part of ''Urusei Yatsura'' fanfic as a whole.
** I'd have to agree with {{Robbie}} on this one: while incredibly original, detailed, and epic, the stories take the main characters in a direction which either appears completely justified or horribly spiteful, and that's just in the first ten stories. The stories are incredibly long, and to understand them all fully they should be read in order. It is a huge part of written fanon, so checking it out is helpful, but no one ever said UY characterization was governed by it. Its big issue is not so much homosexuality as its harsh view of the characters. Yes, most of the characters have done extreme things and acted like huge assholes, but this series was (a) experimental in almost every sense of the word and (b) a frigging comedy. In my opinion, Ataru's sudden cruelty is disturbing and uncomfortable, because while he is pointing out others' legitimate faults, he is also flawed, or he was. The rectification of his personal and personality problems makes it OK for him to insult countless characters? Plus, if you like Lum, she's going to be called out a lot early on. A LOT. I recommend it for ''understanding the fanon better'', but I disagree with its harsh view of the show universe and will not be finishing it.
** An epic saga that goes from the absolutely sublime - good writing, elaborate plots, lots of action and a new, quite original take on the characters of the manga - to the dowright ridiculous (the beginning of chapter 11 "Together The Outland" will make quite a bunch of fans shiver: I mean, [[spoiler: in a very distant future, Lum and Ataru are still lovers. However, they have [[HoYay BOTH a harem of female clones]] because they seldom see each other. However, only she and he can have children or something the matter. [[AllJustaDream Then it's revealed as a dream]], but with possibilities to be premonitory]]). It's a textbook on about what to do and what NOT to do in fanfics. It's still unfinished (this troper recieved feedback - on March 2014 - from one of the authors: he says they plan on continue it) and at the moment we are on the third important arc, with many open ends: [[spoiler:Ataru and Lum first natural child being apparently dead, but in reality, unbeknowst to her parents. she just was sent to another dimension. As far as I understand, she's slated to return as an adult to watch her baby sibling being born and then be the main character, hence starting a new generation.)]]. At times you will love it and in just a few minutes you'll hate it. It's quite iconoclastic, and while I enjoy the harsh, macho and cruel anti-hero Ataru turns to be here, it feels out of place (he mellows over time). [[spoiler:I do not like Lum losing her trademark bikini, either, though it's soon revealed that Ataru has bought a whole set of sexier wardrobe for her]] *nudge** nudge*. As stated before, recommended for all fanfic-writer wannabes who want to know how to manage an story: what should be done and what should never be included in an epic saga. Herriot and Smith deserve all the praise while pointing out that such a huge story always comes ends up having flaws.

* Recommended by @/WeirdBeard, Seconded by {{GenkiGirl}}
* ''Status'': Complete
* ''Synopsis'': After Lum discovers that her infamous electric shocks may be dangerous to Ataru's health, their relationship starts turning in a new direction.
* ''Comments'': Set sometime after the manga/5th movie. The story is well-paced, with a good mixture of action, romance and adventure. It's also respectful to the characters, although [[spoiler:Megane]] gets [[PutOnABus put on a bus]] "off-camera" after a fairly-intense scene.
** It is indeed respectful to the characters, and some of the obviously logical thought processes behind the story's twists and turns are explained through the narrative itself. The relationship development is sweet and feels natural, and altogether the story works well. I believe it to be the best UY fanfic I've ever read.
** While this troper enjoys some parts of "The Senior Year" (especially the ones that 1) focus in the canonical cast instead of the OCs, 2) don't rely too much on the [[HoYay Les Yay]] factor and 3) have cinematic-like action) more than "Lum Gets Grounded", sometimes it feels more like a guilty pleasure than anything else. "Lum Gets Grounded" is, neutrally speaking, the best UY fanfic in English, hands down: true to the spirit of the original source, with lots of wisely measured character development (it flows like a breeze during the long narration) and fast-paced action scenes. A very pleasant lecture, this is THE must read FanFic for UY fans.
** There is a sequel [[https://www.fanfiction.net/s/4225567/1/Across-the-Stars here]] (Complete).

* ''Status'': Complete
* ''Synopsis'': Very short story based on chapter 333 of the UY Manga. I wanted to explore a completely different point of view -an alternate universe, set 5 years in the future from the chapter timeline- remaining within the canonic continuum.

* ''Synopsis'': What if Lum and Shampoo were somehow to become an item? Two of Takahashi's finest have it out in a game of Tag, and suddenly the fate of the Earth rests on an Amazon champion and a lovely Tigerstriped Bikini-clad Alien princess...
* ''Comments'': Basically, Shampoo is chosen to be Lum's opponent instead of Ataru, and the Kiss of Death she gives Lum is misinterpreted as [[AccidentalProposal the Kiss of Marriage]]. Don't expect updates, though - the author died, and the person who posted it has no intention of continuing.
