It starts as a simple retelling of the Chuunin exam arc emphasising the characterisation of both boys, but moves on to a For Want of A Nail AU where Gaara works to be worthy of Naruto's unfailing love and they struggle to be together in their situation. The way soulmates work in the ninja world, the benifts and dangers are worked in really well- it's no cheep gimmic but a core part of the world. If soul mate AUs aren't normally your thing this is a good place to try- everyone remains in character and the world works consistantly throughout. I normally dislike soulmate [=AUs=] but this is wonderful.

The style of How I Met Your Mother was gracefully and fittingly used. Aside from a few grammar mistakes and a bit of a dragged-out middle part, this fic is extremely excellent.

That itself is this troper's favorite aspect of the story: The women aren't simply there for the harem; they play a massive part of the story and get massive screen-time (sometimes more than Naruto himself). Minor (female) characters are spared and are given immeasurable depth, and HeelFaceTurn are aplenty. The story is over 1 million words long, JustForFun/TropeOverdosed (it can be found already as an example in a number of pages on Website/TvTropes) and is divided into arcs. The writing style and characterization -especially Naruto as he becomes more experienced- may not be for everyone, but it is quite the ride if you're willing to stick around. This troper actually prefers this over to what Shippuden turned into.
